Encounter Groups: Hordes of 2-200
Diet: Insects, fish, shrimp.
Tactics: Flee rapidly, occasionally batter with pointy beak.

-Small Herons tend towards being quite stocky, and all are around a foot tall and weigh less than a pound. Their small size allows them to perch on reeds, allowing them to hunt in deeper water than wading herons would.

Small Heron Types:
HERONS: Small Herons included the Zigzag Heron, Capped Heron, Green Heron, and the Pond Herons (several species).

Image

SMALL BITTERNS: There are nine species of tiny Bitterns, like the Least, Dwarf & Black Bitterns.

Little Blue Egret.

SMALL EGRETS: Egrets of this type include the Cattle Egrets, which often flock near large mammals to take advantage of the small animals and insects disturbed by their presence. There's also the white Snowy Egret of the Americas, the Little Blue Egret, and the Black Heron.

Tactics: Flee rapidly, occasionally batter with pointy beak.

-Most Herons fit this build. Some are taller than others, but most are of similar weight and diet.

Heron Types:
HERONS: These include the Tiger Herons, Boat-Billed Heron (with a large, flat bill), Agami Heron, Great Egret (not actually an Egret, lol), Great-Billed Heron, Goliath Heron (the largest, at 11 lbs.), and more. The Grey Heron and Great Blue Herons are particularly notable, covering much of the globe and being 1 meter high and 2-4 lbs.

NIGHT HERONS: These differ mainly by being nocturnal, and are much stockier than most Herons. Only seven species remain of what was once a larger group across three families, as their habitats have fallen throughout much of the world, and other animals (like weasels & crows) encroach upon their space.

Image

LARGE BITTERNS: A small handful (four species) of stockier birds with thicker next, but around the same size- the common American Bittern is about 2.5 lbs., for example.

Image

LARGE EGRETS: The Little Egret is actually rather large (figure that one out)- about 1 lb.

Size: Up to 18 inches long (less than a pound to 30 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: "Sieges" of 2-200.
Diet: Small sealife, fish.
Tactics: Flee rapidly, occasionally batter with pointy beak.

-Spoonbills are large relatives of the Herons with long, broad-tipped bills that give them their names. Mostly around Europe & Africa, they feed by swaying their bills through the water, and detect moving prey in these sweeps, then snap at them- the broad surface of the bill holds them shut. Almost all other Heron-type animals use narrow, pointed beaks for this purpose, making these unmistakable animals. There are six species, all around 3-5 lbs.

-Spoonbills are Heron-sized but not as dangerous, as their beaks are blunted and more ideal for catching slippery fish and shrimp than catching things and stabbing them to death.

-The Ibis, in particular the Sacred Ibis, give us Thoth, God of Wisdom in Egyptian mythology (though these are now extirpated from Egypt, no longer living there at all- more are found in introduced populations in Europe & Asia). Ibises are the size of Herons & Spoonbills, but sport long, thick, curved bills instead of pointed or flat ones. There are about 24 different species, most around similar sizes. Some hail from South America or Australia, and you can readily find White & Scarlet Ibises in Florida. The Australian White Ibis is sometimes cheekily referred to as the "Bin Chicken" for its habit of rummaging through garbage- it's well-acclimated to city life, leaving some to view it as a nuisance.

Storks

Post by Jabroniville »

STORKS:
-Storks are much more heavyset than their relatives in the Heron group. They have long, stout bills and wide wingspans. Storks are most common around Tropical Asia & Sub-Saharan Africa, with only a few found in North America & Australia. An incredibly-ancient legend in Europe is that Storks delivered newborn babies- this did not become popular until a 19th Century Hans Christian Andersen story The Storks, and is now just a common gag in cartoons for a chaste origin story of babies to tell kids.

Small Storks:
MYCTERIA: Include the Yellow-Billed Stork (4-5 lbs), Wood Stork (5-7 lbs., one of the few Storks of the Americas), Painted Stork (4-8 lbs, named for the pink-tipped feathers located to the rear), and the Critically-Endangered Milky Stork (5-8 lbs).

-These large Storks are PL 2 overall, and quite hefty by the standards of flying birds. Most are active hunters.

Large Storks:
BLACK-NECKED STORK: Very large Australian Stork- the only published weight is 9 lbs, but this is probably a huge undestimate given their large size.

Image

SADDLE-BILLED STORK: Huge Storks from Africa- 5 feet tall and 10-16 lbs. Named for the odd saddle-shaped growth atop their bills.
JABIRU: Massive South American Stork- 14-20 lbs.

Image

ADJUTANTS: Large Asian Storks- 18-24 lbs. The Greater Adjutant is more likely to scavenge, like their relative the Marabou Stork.
MARABOU STORK: One of the largest wingspans of all birds- a massive 10'6". Up to 20 lbs, these are massive birds and are mostly known to eat carrion.

Image

SHOEBILL: Large African birds with big, clog-like bills. They heavily prefer low-oxygen waters like swamps to catch fish that surface to breathe. 4'6", 8-15 lbs.

I saw shoebills on a wildlife TV show and honestly I found them weird, I don't really know how to explain it but watching how they moved, they didn't seem real (almost uncanny valley like), they reminded me of a cross between animatronics and a Muppet.

Size: Up to 3 feet tall (5-8 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Small groups to colonies of thousands.
Diet: Small sealife, fish.
Tactics: Filter feed shrimp. Flee using flight.

-Flamingos are very common in zoos, being spectacularly bright, unsually-colored creatures. Their pink coloration notably comes from the shrimp in their diet- they are naturally grayish if eating other things. There are six species in all, making up their own order. Flamingos are wading birds that eat with their heads upside-down, filtering water out of their bills and eating crustaceans and fish trapped inside. They usually stand on one leg, with the other tucked beneath the body- nobody's quite sure as to why, but it might be to conserve some body heat (as they often stand in colder water). It's thought they are somewhat related to the Grebes. The oldest known Flamingo died at 83 years of age.

-Andean, Chilean & James's Flamingos are quite pale and hail from South America. Greater & Lesser Flamingos are from tropical Africa & India. The American Flamingo is the brightest pink/scarlet and from Central America. Almost all the Flamingos are of the same general size, being around a meter tall and between 5-8 lbs.- the Greater Flamingo is the biggest, but only tops out around 180 cm & 10 lbs. at the biggest.

Anceriformes

Post by Jabroniville »

DUCKS, GEESE & SWANS:
-Ducks, Swans & Geese are in the Anceriformes order, and are easily comparable with other orders like the Grebes, Coots, and more. They are all web-footed, aquatic birds with broad, rounded bills to filter out food. Ducks are the smallest, and found on every continent but Antarctica. Geese are a size larger, and Swans are a size above that- these latter two are intimidating creatures due to their size and aggression, but are not terribly durable nor that strong. TierZoo has one of its best videos explaining how these are "Intimidation-Based Builds" that are actually not that high-tier so long as the adversary has some strong backbone.

Ducks: The smallest Anceriformes, with shorter necks and squat bodies. Most ducks in fact do not "quack", but make a variety of noises, but a few American species do, which spreads the conception around. Most ducks are pretty closely related- the Mallard can breed with 63 other species, and given how far it travels and how easily it can be introduced, this can badly pollute other generic branches.

Geese: Set up in two families, these are a size larger, and infamously aggressive. Very long necks give them a more dinosaur-like shape. Geese appear frequently in mythology, but often in silly ways, such as the Goose That Lays The Golden Eggs and Mother Goose. We also uses phrases such as "silly goose" and "What's good for the goose is good for the gander" (meaning all should be treated equally).

Swans: The largest by far. Members of the "Cygnus" family, famous the world over for beauty and grace.

Tactics: Flee rapidly, occasionally batter with pointy beak.

-Ducks are often filter-feeders, with tiny "teeth" in their bills to filter small creatures and plant matter from the water. Others directly hunt fish. For stats, they're largely like less-stabby chickens- not very durable and they don't hit very hard, being PL 0 overall.

DABBLING DUCKS: Ducks that feed on the water's surface rather than diving. This includes the Teals (for which we get the color name "teal"), the famous Mallard (iconic for the green head of the male), and the Crested Duck. Most species of domestic ducks are descended from the Mallard.

MUSCOVY DUCK: South American ducks often introduced as feral populations all over the word. As they can grow quite large, they are easily able to take over. Domesticated ones can reach 15 lbs.
MANDARIN DUCK: Famous Chinese animal.

Paradise Shelduck.

SHELDUCKS: 5 species of semi-terrestrial Asian ducks.

PYGMY GEESE: Named for their goose-like beaks, these are more closely related to Dabbling Ducks.

-All of the Geese save one are no larger than ducks- the whole entirety of the White Geese are only around 5-10 lbs. Geese are mostly herbivorous, with many feeding on grasses. They mostly reside in the lower Northern hemisphere during winter, but fly to the extreme north of the globe during summer, where they breed.
-Smaller Geese are identical to Ducks in build, but have greater Intimidation, though not as much as their larger kin.

Geese:
* All but the Canada Goose fit this build.

WHITE GEESE: All of the White Geese are under 10 lbs. These include the Emperor, Ross's, Snow, Bar-Headed, Tundra Bean, Taiga Bean, Pink-Footed, Greylag & Greater and Lesser White-Fronted Geese. The Greylag Goose is the ancestor of the domestic breed- they are among the first animals to be domesticated, going back 3,000 years.

BLACK GEESE: A few varieties of the six kinds of Black Geese are this big. In includes the Brant, Red-Breasted, Barnacle & Cackling Geese, as well as the Nene of Hawai'i (which is descended from the Canada Goose). The Cackling Goose is nearly identical to the Canada Goose but smaller, while the Barnacle Goose is named for a the "Goose-Necked Barnacle" (which is of course named for geese- etymology is weird).
