Total: Abilities: 6 / Skills: 50--25 / Advantages: 3 / Powers: 14 / Defenses: 10 (58)

-Geladas are quite fierce, and known for their beet-red chests and their ability to flip their lip up over their nose, exposing a startling pink flesh that makes it look like they were partially skinned (this is likely the inspiration for the Krenshar in D&D). Found in Ethiopia, they are similar to baboons but in their own genus. They are largely terrestrial, living in grasslands, consuming mostly grasses. Females weigh 24 lbs., males weigh 40+ lbs. Society is male-dominated, but dominant females sometimes monopolize males, and other females are unreceptive to them. Researches have documented "cheating" going on, with non-dominant males mating with females, who deliberately conceal their "mating cries". Unsually, females are known to willingly abort pregnancies if a new male assumes dominance over the harem, and males will allow the ex-leader to stick around as a "babysitter" and subordinate fighter- this can prevent infanticide. Because of this, and the fact that they live in grasslands which few other animals can exploit (and thus areas most predators won't visit), means that Gelada babies are 85% likely to survive to their fourth year- very rare for any wild animal.

-As terrestrial monkeys, Geladas are less athletic & acrobatic than others, but they are much fiercer fighters than other Monkeys of this size, hitting PL 4. Their lip-lifting thing is quite horrifying even to humans, and puts their Intimidation up to the level usually given to Great Apes and other large animals.

Complications:
Disabled (Animal)- Monkeys cannot speak to humans.

Total: Abilities: 20 / Skills: 30--15 / Advantages: 7 / Powers: 16 / Defenses: 8 (66)

Era: Modern
Range: Central West Africa
Colouring: Black with brightly-coloured faces and buttockses
Size: Up to 3 feet long (50-88 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Mixed troops that sometimes merge (20-250)
Diet: Seeds, fruit, eggs, small animals
Tactics: Chase and snatch small animals. Bite savagely if threatened.

-Baboons are infamously dangerous, aggressive, and unruly Monkeys, all hailing from Africa or the Middle East. There are 5-6 species in total, of various sizes- the Kinda Baboon is only 31 lbs., and the Chacma can hit 99 lbs. All Baboons have long, dog-like muzzles, sharp teeth with powerful jaws, close-set eyes, thick fur, and hairless ass-pads for sitting comfort. They are highly-omnivorous, eating grasses, leaves and seeds, as well as insects, fish, birds, Vervet Monkeys and small Antelopes. They are extremely dangerous to solitary predators like Leopards, whom they will attack and kill en masse, but a lone Baboon is easy prey for something like that. Lions, Hyenas and Crocodiles also readily prey on them.

-Baboons live in very large groups with the sexes mixing- sometimes, each male can mate with any female, but other species are more jealous. Males will raid "harems" for other females, leading to brutal fights- as the creatures have terrifyingly-large teeth, this can be fairly bloody, and can even involve infants being used as hostages and huma-- er, monkey shields in battle. This may actually be a learned behavior- one troop had all of its most violent males die off during a tuberculosis outbreak, leaving mostly females and a minority of less-violent males. The entire culture of the troop shifted to be less dangerous, as even incoming males learned the status quo. Baboons live up to 45 years in captivity- 20 to 30 in the wild.

-Sexual dimorphism is so common in Baboons that females have an entirely different build- they fit the "Large Monkeys", as do the Kinda Baboons.

Large Baboon Species:
OLIVE BABOON: Wide-ranging Baboons found in 25 countries in Africa- one of the most successful primates. Sometimes form "friendships" where a male is introduced to a new group and befriends a female in a nonsexual relationship- they groom each other, and he will watch over her offspring while she forages or fight off intruding males, and in return she helps him move into the group. Later, the two may mate. Typically 53-82 lbs. in males, but some may weigh over 100 lbs.!

Image

HAMADRYAS BABOON: White-maned baboons that travel in small harems that can combine together- the most patriarchal of Baboon societies. Worshipped as "Babi", an Egyptian Goddess, in ancient times, as well as "Hapi", one of the four sons of Horus, who protected the organs of the deceased. Typically 44-66 lbs.
GUINEA BABOON: Live in Western Africa, where they walk longer distances than other Baboons. 30-57 lbs.

Image

YELLOW BABOON: East African Baboons, named for their much brighter fur.

Image

CHACMA BABOON: South African Baboons. Make up 20% of Leopard kills in that region. The heaviest of all Baboons- 45-99 lbs. in males., making them possibly the world's largest monkey species.

Total: Abilities: 20 / Skills: 32--16 / Advantages: 7 / Powers: 16 / Defenses: 8 (67)

-Mandrills are nutty. Basically being monkeys, they almost seem to fit more into the Ape side of things. They're notoriously angry, violent and dangerous, especially since they travel in large groups, and though they usually just forage all day for fruit, leaves and seeds, they've been known to take down prey as large as young fawns of Antelopes for food! They are pretty consistently the heaviest monkeys, rivaling the Chacma Baboon on that front (unconfirmed reports exist of a 130-lb. Mandrill male, but most are less than 100 lbs.)- females are barely 20-30 lbs., in one of the more extreme cases of sexual dimorphism among mammals. Plus, those faces and asses... designed to attract mates and be intimidating, they stand out pretty well compared to the rest of the Primates- no other mammal is as colorful. It's not for nothing that many animal books, including the HUGE Smithsonian one, use a Mandrill as the focus image.

-Mandrills are harem-based, with dominant and sub-dominant males existing in the troop- both may mate, but only the dominant males (easily located by their brighter coloring) can breed- becoming dominant is the only way to gain the testicle volume for it, apparently.

-Despite being only 82 pounds and smaller than most children, Mandrills (and Baboons, which are about the same in terms of size, ferocity and stats) are REALLY strong, actually doing +3 damage despite their stature. They're dangerous enough that an unarmed human would be hard-pressed to kill one in real life, and an "Elite" like the one seen here makes up a PL 4.5/5-type of build, rivalling that of the Wolves & Hyenas of the world. Never mind that they gather in huge GROUPS.

The animal is also lacking the opposite-sex pheromone-inducing hypnosis power of the character. :)

-Very little known compared to their close cousins the Mandrill and Baboons, Drills are part of the same group as Mandrills, and are around the same size. One male leads a group of 20-30 individuals- its mates and young. Drills are found only in three African nations, being very rare- among Africa's most endangered mammals. As few as 3,000 remain.

Apes

Post by Jabroniville »

APES:
-Apes are the larger primates, containing the biggest members of the family, and in fact this is the group that sprouted up off the same ancestors we did. The Apes are differentiated by size and lack of tail, though the Gibbons are smaller than many Monkeys. They're typified by being EXTREMELY physically strong, packing an incredible amount of muscle-mass into a body that can be much smaller than many humans.

Era: Modern
Range: Southeast Asia
Colouring: Black
Size: Up to 5 feet tall (17-33 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Large groups (2-14)
Diet: Seeds, fruit, leaves, small animals.
Tactics: Chase and snatch small animals, or flee using speed. Biting & throwing poop.

-The smallest Apes are about the same as the mid-sized Monkeys- Siamangs and Gibbons are all Southeast Asian Apes with staggeringly-long arms and Monkey-like faces. They are INCREDIBLY-athletic- a friend and I were at the zoo and watched a black Gibbon casually grab a post and basically do thirteen to fifteen rotations on it, then sit back down like nothing had happened (my friend: "look- he's not even BREATHING heavily"). Gibbons are, in fact, the world's fastest and most athletic non-flying tree-dwelling mammals- they can leap up to 26 feet across, can reach branches 50 feet apart with a good head of steam, and brachiate at a ridiculous speed- hitting 35 mph. The Chinese called them "the gentlemen of the forest" for their grace and smooth movements, while the Macaques, which hungered for human food, were seen as greedy gluttons.

-There are about 18 kinds of Gibbon- Pileated, Silvery, White-Cheeked, Black-Crested, Hoolock Gibbons, and more. The Lar Gibbon is the most famous, and shows up frequently in zoos. All are Endangered, some incredibly so. The most recently-described was the Skywalker Hoolock Gibbon in 2017 (the researchers, obviously, were Star Wars fans). Gibbons were the first of the apes to diverge from the common ancestor of modern man and the other apes, 16.8 million years ago- this explains why they're so much smaller and less sexually-dimorphic.

-Gibbons have stats more equivalent to monkeys than Great Apes- they are around 11-35 lbs. most of the time.

-Siamangs are the largest Gibbons, often twice the size of the others. They are also differentiated by their second and third toes being joined by a membrane, and large throat pouches on both females and males alike. They can live to be 40 years old in captivity, and are all black.

-For stats, I made Siamangs a bit stronger and tougher than Gibbons, but still lose so than humans.

-The Bonobo is the lesser-known and smaller type of Chimp, and is mostly-known these days for their unusual kind of sexuality: Bonobos solve nearly every problem or scuffle by banging. Constantly banging. Males bang each other, females bang each other, and everyone bangs everyone else. Usually it's a pretty quick thing (the ladies just do the Ape equivalent of scissoring), over in seconds, but they seem to enjoy it. If only mankind could adopt a similar approach to everything.

-They were initially called Pygmy Chimpanzees until 1954, when a new term was invented to make sure they were seen as a different species in their own right (and because they are actually not much smaller than Chimps- only their heads look smaller, and the first description was just from skulls). They are less studied than Chimps, living only in the unstable Congo, but there is likely between 29,000-50,000 Bonobos remaining. They are not known to kill each other the way Chimps do, but can be violent- females will form coalitions to brutalize any males coming near certain coveted food items, for example. In fact, they are the only non-human apes to have established female leaders in most troops, as the females are able to from long-lasting alliances with each other (the Power of Friendship literally unseating male power? That's some Sailor Moon shit, yo).

Ape evolution is a fascinating but tricky subject. From things I have read it seems that humans are not necessarily the most highly evolved ape in some ways. We retain some of the brutal ways of our distant ancestors that some other ape or hominid species may have evolved away from. A recent discovery in South Africa seems to have found a species of hominid that would have had an average IQ of 150 judging by their skulls. Humans may be more like baboons, not the wisest but the most energetic and adaptable.

The Most Human-Like Animal:
-The Chimp is famous as our closest living relative- a weird kind of mirror image of ourselves. It's possibly the smartest animal on the planet (only the Dolphin comes close), and its complex social structures and learning abilities make it stand apart from the rest of the herd. They're so comically human that they've been make the jokey sidekicks to people for years. Being smart AND funny-looking makes for good TV for simpler folk, I guess. But that doesn't imply Chimps are good pets, oh no... one particular woman found this out the hard way in 2009 when she was literally dismembered by a "tame" Chimp her friend had as a long-time pet for it's whole life. Thing just went berserk, TORE OFF HER HANDS, and BIT HER FACE OFF. It was a specacularly gruesome revelation that "Surprise! Wild animals make crappy pets!". "Experts" weighed in on what may have set the Chimp off, but as the author of The Book of Deadly Animals pointed out, his behavior was perfectly-normal for a teenage male Ape- they go through a very violent phase, as they "prepare" the females in the area for a life of dominance by the stronger males. Humans are sometimes victimized in this manner.

-So yeah, the Chimp may be smaller than us (though it's deceptive since its always in a crouch), but it is certainly no weakling, and if angry enough, will absolutely beat the HELL out of an ordinary person. Like most primates, they have a huge amount of muscle mass packed onto their frame, and their extremely long arms only add to their power. Oh, and they are known to practise infanticide, especially once a new male takes over a troop. Adults are known to hunt smaller monkeys in troops, kill them, and EAT THEIR BRAINS (often relishing it to the point where they lick the brainpan clean)- they can and have killed human children for the same purpose. Think about THAT next time you laugh at a Detective Chimp or a goofy Tarzan sidekick.

-Chimps live in mostly patriarchal herds, with males engaging in the most hunting of animals (Red Colobus monkeys are a favorite target). The average life expectancy is around their 30s, but the oldest living Chimp was 66 years old. Their similarity to humans makes them excellent lab animals, with some literally being used in this manner for decades- this is important for medical and drug research, but obviously very controversial. Said similarity to humans is also the source of HIV, which jumped from chimps to humans at some point (I've read a bit that suggests it might have been from vaccinations carried out in Africa a few decades ago- short-sighted doctors used chimp blood for a vaccine that required primate proteins).

The Bili Ape:
-Of some interest is the "Bili Ape"- a relative of the Eastern Chimpanzee which is a fair bit larger, and has some Gorilla-like traits, such as nesting on the ground occasionally. Initially mythologized as a "Gorilla-Chimp Hybrid", they are really just a type of Chimp that's altered their culture a bit, in a way that scientists are still figuring out.

Chimp Stats:
-Chimps are easily as strong as the toughest humans, making Strength 4 overall- it's rather tough to truly nail down Ape strength since they don't really lift weights at all (and scientists tend to give numbers between "four and seven times" human strength, but who knows which averages they're using?), but being as strong as just about any human, and capable of throwing 800 lbs. about 30 feet given the M&M/DCA rules, this seems about right. It gives them strength comparable to a Donkey, a Deer or Elk male, or a Bighorn Sheep, all of which are considerably larger creatures. However, since they're so strong, I felt like giving them a notch more damage (also reflects their teeth as well), so they're dishing out DC 20 damage. Chimps are very tough as well, for a PL 5 micro-powerhouse that can easily hold off a full-grown male Wolf or Hyena. PL 5's a good spot for the strong and/or dangerous, but not QUITE super-elite of the Animal Kingdom.
