Re: 31 Days of Halloween 2021

And the final four. The Mummy (1932) - On Tubi. While I'd seen some of the classic Universal Monster films way back in the 80s as a kid, I'd never seen this one. I'd forgotten how short a lot of these were, with this coming in at only 73 minutes. It's rather interesting that the titular character on...

Re: 31 Days of Halloween 2021

(I'd hoped to post this yesterday so as to not do two in one day, but circumstances prevented it.) Cadaver (2020) - On Netflix. More properly Kadaver, the original Norwegian title, as this is in Norwegian with English subtitles. Basically, in Norwegian city ruined by some sort of atomic disaster - i...

Re: 31 Days of Halloween 2021

The Lighthouse (2019) - On Amazon Prime. Wow, this was a weird one. It's kind of amazing what you can do with just two people in a very isolated situation. There's no dialog for the first seven minutes. Just that repetitive foghorn that ends up hanging over the entire film like some sort of omnipre...

Re: 31 Days of Halloween 2021

The Devil Below (2021) - On Netflix. A five person research team go looking for a vanished Appalachian mining town which disappeared from official records back in the 1970s to find out what really happened. This was a surprisingly good film, and at only 90 minutes doesn't waste any time with unnece...

Re: 31 Days of Halloween 2021

The Ritual (2017) - On Netflix. Somewhat loosely based on a novel by Adam Nevill. Four British friends go hiking in Sweden as a memorial of sorts to their late friend and after venturing off the trail, they find themselves being stalked by a mysterious entity. I really enjoyed this quite a bit. It'...

31 Days of Halloween 2021

SO, this month I've been trying to watch a horror (or at least horror/Halloween adjacent) film I've not seen before every day. At times this is easy, as there are a number of either older films or very new ones I've not seen. On the other hand, it's a bit hard as a number of the stuff over the years...

Re: My Essay On DC's Inferiority Complex

What's sadly ironic is that I remember Alan Moore - and even to a lesser extent Frank Miller - making comments to the effect that people seemed to have learned all the wrong lessons from those books. Moore's work in, say, Tom Strong or Supreme is clearly much different than Watchman or TKJ, so those...

Mark Hamill can really only do two voices: His own and the Joker voice he has used for every single thing he's done (Hobgoblin, Trickster, TMNT, this).

Even as a kid, I always assumed Teela's logical destiny was to become the next Sorceress.

Re: Female Action Figures: Hits and Missed Opportunities

So, naturally the followup to ThunderCats is SilverHawks . SilverHawks was also developed by Rankin/Bass and debuted in 1986 with a single 65 episode season. Essentially cops-in-space, but with more than a few interesting overtones. Where BraveStarr was a Western space sheriff, the SilverHawks skewe...

Re: The most petty thing you'd do as a comics creator

I feel this strange desire to resurrect the old "Forgotten Heroes" moniker and use it for a title focused on Tim Drake and Stephanie Brown as a now happily married 20-something couple who are still heroes, with them frequently teaming up with other fan favorites from the 90s, like Kyle Ray...

"Did you hear? Robin is gay now." "Really? The original Robin is gay?" "No. He's still straight." "Oh, then it must be the current Robin, Batman's son, that's gay." "Not that I'm aware of." "Then it must be the one that died and came back. You k...

Re: Female Action Figures: Hits and Missed Opportunities

ThunderCats So in 1985, we got the ThunderCats. Somewhat unusually for one of these things, the animated series came first, and the toys second. If you're unfamiliar with the show, it's about a race of humanoid cat-people who escape their dying world and end up on "Third Earth", which is ...

Re: Captain Marvel, the Marvel Familiy and Shazam - Ramblings and Reconstruction: The Rock of Eternity

I'd forgotten they'd done a bunch of DC superheroes stuff in the late 60s/early 70s. Unfortunately, those and Tarzan (which apparently has had no effort made to do a decent DVD transfer) are the only ones easily available. :(

Re: Captain Marvel, the Marvel Familiy and Shazam - Ramblings and Reconstruction: The Rock of Eternity

Are any of those old Filmation series available any (streaming, dvd, etc.)? Besides the Marvels, I have memories of Zorro, Tarzan, the Lone Ranger, and (I think?) Batman. I'm wondering if they hold up.

Re: Captain Marvel, the Marvel Familiy and Shazam - Ramblings and Reconstruction: The Rock of Eternity

While I had vague memories of the Marvel family cartoons from the late 70s, my first real memory of Captain Marvel was from the Underworld Unleashed event, in which Billy defeated Necron with only the power of his own innate selflessness. That made me like the character.
