Civitas (M&M 3e IC)

Post by Horsenhero »

A winter day...

The seven of you walk through the halls with massive columns in silence. Not that anyone feels much like speaking right now. Teleportation is always a little nauseating. Looks pass between all of you as you take in your surroundings. This isn't the Lighthouse or any other satellite base. The gravity doesn't have that strange fluctuation artificial gravity tends to have. Good. That would be even more nausea inducing on top of the teleportation. There's a reason most super-hero teams still use a vehicle for transport as opposed to teleportation gates. The second clue that this isn't the Lighthouse is the architecture. Massive, cyclopean columns and walls that appear to be sandstone don't match the ultramodern aesthetic of the Freedom League.

You aren't new recruits for Freedom City's preeminent super team then.

On the other hand, nothing here is ominous or threatening. This doesn't feel like a Crime League trap...even discounting the fact most members of that team renounced their membership since Death magnetic publicly turned down membership, declaring the name too "on the nose" to be taken seriously.

Not to mention the woman leading them through the forest of columns was more captain of industry than evil mastermind.

"Once again, my name is Sofia Cruz and I must apologize for the cryptic messages that summoned all of you, but I couldn't reveal the details in advance. There are too many people who would plunder this location for its secrets for me to risk anyone intercepting the summonses meant for you six alone."

Despite the crisp, businesslike tone, she seems friendly enough. Leading you to a large room, she gestures toward another woman standing at military parade rest. This second woman is tall, lithe and of indeterminate age. She looks to be in her late 20's, but something in her bearing leads you to believe she may be older...perhaps much older.

"Greetings," she says smiling in a way that you imagine she thinks is disarming. It isn't. "My name is Ms. Johnson and I represent an organization that is looking to sponsor a regional team of super-heroes. You six are our preferred choices and Ms. Cruz has been kind enough to volunteer this headquarters for your use. I know this must seem sudden and somewhat vague, but I'd like to get a feel for your enthusiasm before I go into more details. Also, some introductions might be in order because most of your files are painfully thin."

At this time Ms. Cruz clears her throat. "I don't know any of you, so even if you feel reluctant to introduce yourself to Ms. Johnson, seeing as she already has files on you, please introduce yourselves to me."

Her gaze flits across the group, lingering just a little longer on Scarab.
If you have introductions to make or would like to expand upon your first contact from Sofia feel free, then I'll get to the second part of the pitch for you to respond to.

The Thunderer

The Thunderer throws his head back and laughs cheerfully, finding the whole situation delightful. Admittedly the nausea wasn't fun, but his unique physiology cleared it up quickly enough.

"I am... The Thunderer," He declares, planting his hands on his hips and thrusting his chest out, "The Baron of Battle. The Son of Storms."

"I've come under the promise of adventure and a noble cause to fight under,"
He looks around with a smile on his face, "And I believe the first part has of this promise has been payed in full. What a magnificent palace."

Neutron:

At first Lloyd thought all this cloak and dagger was yet another of Corrina's publicity stunts. As if the proposed animated series on Netflix currently in the works would have been enough to satisfy his agent and publicist. But as Neutron's eyes adjusted from the brightness of the teleportation effect, he thought that some of the architecture was for some reason familiar to him though he couldn't place a finger on why. Egyptian maybe?

He recognized Dr. Ooze as he was a guest star in a couple of his episodes, usually on the subject of plasma energy and the like although Neutron was not a qualified scientist and the current Freedom Eagle whom he worked with once before. The avian Goldwing he had known something about if only from rumors. The others rang no bell in his head.

"I'm afraid i am pretty much an open book." he said calmly in his deep voice as he firmly shook hands with everyone save Ms. Johnson who looked like the type who didn't spare any niceties.

"It is rather refreshing to meet people who aren't rabid fans. Not that there isn't nice, polite ones of course since most of them are. My name is Lloyd Price alias Neutron. Pleased to meet you all. Especially the both of you, Doctor and Eagle, it's really been awhile. Still am a big fan of your tv show by the way. Now Ms. Johnson, might i be so bold to ask a few questions about this place and this particular organization of yours."

Goldwing

A griffin with orange fur and feathers, which could appear to be golden in the right sort of light, stepped forward. He was wearing a hoodie, jeans, high-tops and a pair of white gloves with metallic tips. He definitely heard of Dr. Ooze and Neutron. He said in a London accent "Afternoon, everyone. The name's Goldwing. I'm a griffin from the world that some of you call Ani-Earth. I'm a specialist in magic and in working out how to adapt it to the modern world."

He could remember getting a message to be at a certain place while he was having fried chicken at The Soul-Van at Liberty Park yesterday...

Liberty Park, yesterday afternoon...

As he landed, Goldwing said "Yeah, I'll have two pieces of chicken."

The vendor said "I've heard of you, you're that bird-cat guy, right? Isn't it, like, cannibalism or something when you eat chicken?"

"Not at all. If I was a chicken, then it'd be cannibalism. But I'm not, so no one back home would even notice or care if they saw me doing this."

"That makes some kind of sense. That'll be $6."

After Goldwing paid for his chicken, he sat on a nearby bench and took his gloves off. Each hand resembled the talons of an eagle. The chicken certainly tasted better than the stuff Goldwing got at the chicken places back in his London. No one at The Soul-Van had ever seen chicken being eaten that quickly or neatly.

As Goldwing put the bones in the bin, wet-wiped his hands and put his gloves back on, the vendor asked "How'd you do that? Never seen a man eat chicken that cleanly before!"

"I'm a griffin, mate. My body's built for meat-eating. This is just a snack by my species' standards!"

A bicycle courier stopped nearby and said "Mr. Goldwing?" as he got off his bike.

Goldwing said "That's me, mate. Is something the matter?"

The courier handed him an envelope, saying "Yeah, got a message for you."

Goldwing told him "Thanks," as he opened it. The message said that if Goldwing wanted to join a superteam, he should go to Pyramid Plaza at noon tomorrow. And to sweeten the pot, they claimed that they could supply him with the documentation needed to legally exist here. That would improve his chances of survival in this new world.
OOC: Just a little something to show that Goldwing's body is different, and it's different for a reason. And that people from Ani-Earth are likely to see and do things differently. ^v^

The Scarab (Dylan Alexander)
Condition Normal
HP 1

It felt weird to be walking upright for so long while wearing the uniform. He felt as if he should be scurrying along the wall or ceiling. For now, the Scarab refrained, maintaining the social norm of walking with the others.

Dylan looked around, his mask hiding the sense of wonder he felt walking through the halls. This place... it felt like... home. As Sophia Cruz's gaze lingered on him, he felt the fleetest sense of resentment or perhaps ire... These halls... they were his by birthright... He had no way of knowing this, but somehow it felt true.

"I am... the Scarab," He says, the mask muffling his voice. "It's both an honor and a privilege to be here..." He gestures to the lair.

Returning his attention to Sofia, he adds;

"So, what's Big Business want with a novice hero like me?" He sounds as if wants to ask more, but instead decided to answer hew question. "As I said, I'm the Scarab.

"My... family... has a history of using this name, and while from what I hear I don't have the exact powers of the previous Scarab, I am, in fact, her heir."

He glances down at some of the symbols adorning his uniform, and the smallest movement of his head suggests that his gaze follows to the architecture around the group.

Like all native Freedonians, Neutron of course had heard of the hero called the Scarab before although he was nothing but a scrawny little kid at the time of the previous one's death.

He did know from occasionally teaming up and talking with other superheroes in Freedom City especially those in the Freedom League that the Scarab he really did remember so well. The one with the red suit who died fighting against the Scions of Sobek. This was way before he was even born.

At least this was one mystery solved today.

On the other hand, the blond guy looked more like a member of a heavy metal band than a superhero but as along as this "Thunderer" does not start singing or perform a guitar riff, then Lloyd can live with it.

The Thunderer

The Thunderer smiles turning to face his new companions.

"Ah Neutron, I love your cereal," He declares cheerfully, holding his hand out to shake, then lowers his voice, "The energy drink isn't very good, but don't feel bad, all energy drinks taste bad."

He pats Neutron on the shoulder affably, then moves on to Goldwing, "Astounding. The last griffin I met ate my horse then tried to eat me! Much happier to meet you, Goldwing, my good man! Err, Griffin!"

He offers his hand to shake and lowers his voice to ask, "What's an Ani-Earth?"

Moving on to Scarab he smiles, offering his hand, "You have my sympathy, I know how hard it can be to be the heir to a great power. Nice to meet you, Scarab."

"Don't worry, I don't eat other people or their animals. I get my meat at the market like you do."
He offers his hand to shake and lowers his voice to ask, "What's an Ani-Earth?"
Griffin lowered his voice and said "That's the name that some people around here call my world. And I'd rather not discuss why I left home in public."

Neutron chuckled at the Thunderer's comment. "Oh i agree completely. Can't stand drinking the stuff myself though i make do with a can or two. I keep telling my sponsors to add some more flavors to the line but as long as the trendy health spa goers drink it by the gallon full, then I'm afraid there isn't going to be any big changes sometime soon."

The Thunderer

The Thunderer smiles, not at all bothered by the lack of an answer for a question he hadn't asked, "Worry not, my friend. Everyone is welcome to their own secrets."

"But I have not been to the market, it sounds interesting. Perhaps I shall have to see these markets when the time avails itself,
" He nods to himself.

"I have thought that I should wash my feet, bottling the water, and sell it as my own energy drink," He whispers conspiratorially, wriggling his eyebrows, "It can't possible taste much worse than the rest on the market."

"Can't stand the taste of that stuff either, Neutron. I'm more of a Bovril man, myself. I was surprised this world even had it! It's a really good drink for someone with my dietary requirements."
OOC: Bovril is a British drink made of beef extract.

Freedom Eagle

Sophie had remained quite during the others introductions, for two reasons, one was to guage the responce of their host to the inevitable bantering. The other was to evaluate the group. Neutron and Dr Ooze were already public figures, new successors to old legacies bringing an air of legitimatcy, the wizard wasn't your classic robe wearer and the Thunderer their was something off he seem a bit too perfect, the new Scarab was right this smacked of corporate. Expect that didn't sit right too much secrecy and this sure wasn't a broadroom.

She stepped forward lifting the face plate of the helmet revealing her face.

"Sophie O'Conner i'm the 4th Freedom Eagle my great grandfather was the orginal." She introduced herself with pride.

"Sweet!" The Scarab says, suggesting he's maybe Sophie's age if not a little younger. "My name's Dylan." He doesn't move to take his mask off just yet...

Freedom Eagle

"By that do you mean this dimention or Freedom City? I'm fairly well travelled, but only really returned the city a couple months ago. Scarab sounds local, probably more on the later. If you don't mind me asking are all magic users from your dimention... well for lack of a better word mythical ?" Sophie asked, she didn't really have much dealing with magic or other dimentions that didn't involve a crisis.
