Just a follow-up to the first post in this thread -- the two most recent Super Robot Wars games include an English translation, although for legal reasons neither is officially available in North America. (The translation is apparently targeted at English speakers in Singapore.) "Let's Plays" of both games are up on YouTube, if you're interested in following the plot and being introduced to some fairly obscure anime. As yet, though, there's never been one that has any of the Macross series mixed with Superdimensional Cavalry Southern Cross and Genesis Climber Mospeada. Maybe next year. ;)

Super Robot Wars V Playthrough -- Last year's game, and as it features the remade Space Battleship Yamato as a central part of its storyline, I'm inclined to view this as the more awesome of the two.

Super Robot Wars X Playthrough -- This is most recent game, released in March of this year, and on t'other hand, this one has Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water. Still in progress.

The poster has a decided tendency to take forever to make up their mind to figure out what they're going to do on any given action, so I find myself fast-forwarding over the actual battles to get to the story. Your mileage may vary.

In relevant news, just a couple days ago, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was announced. claiming to be the biggest video game crossover. And given that it includes every single playable character in Smash history (Everyone is here!), plus a few new ones, and most of the stages return..yeah. It's pretty amazing. 66 (!!) playable fighters in total according to the website, but the number gets a bit confusing when you include the "echo fighters", which is what they're calling clone fighters now. Oh yeah, and Ridley from Metroid is finally included as a playable character.

Be awesome if they included a Sub-Space Emissary-style Story Mode. Said story wasn't groundbreaking, but they did have some awesome moment, and you got to see things like iconic characters taking on iconic minions of other iconic characters, like Donkey Kong punching Goombas and Koopa Troopas.

Huh. Apparently last year there was a game called Master X Master, or MXM, that was NCSoft's attempt at a Heroes of the Storm-style MOBA. It had characters taken from their properties like Lineage, Blade & Soul and CITY OF HEROES.

I'd wonder how in the Hell that managed to fly under my radar, given how much CoH I played back in the day, but apparently they really under-advertised it, and it was shut down only a month after launch.

How does a game get shut down after ONE MONTH? Did the backers just completely lose faith, or what?

Many games these days are opened to customers well before completion. They call it Early Access. In cases where a game doesn't have a lot of depth (or quality), the gaming "community" will move on from the game even before its official release. That's pretty much death for a multiplayer focused game.

Watching some of those Master X Master videos, the Statesman one especially, reminded me of how much I loved City of Heroes back in the day. I actually started re-reading the old CoH novels and going through its TV Tropes page. I even started playing Champions Online again just to relive the feeling a little.

Though now I want some kind of Champions Online / City of Heroes / Freedom Force crossover. Watch Statesman and Minute Man try to out large ham each other while Defender sighs in resignation.

I was a lifetime susbscriber to CoH. Yep, that turned out to be a sucker’s bet.

Heh, apparently the character Blue Steel from CoH was so popular and responsible for so many awesome moments he was considered the Chuck Norris of the Patriot City.
For a while, Blue Steel was the subject of a great many Chuck Norris one-liner jokes. Most of these jokes, like the Chuck Norris jokes, "are normally absurd hyperbolic claims about [Blue Steel's] toughness, attitude, virility, sophistication, and masculinity". The source of these jokes was that Blue Steel was often used to thwart Arachnos' plans, sometimes facing seemingly impossible odds, and typically by himself. No one knows exactly when or where the Blue Steel meme began, but it was very popular during early to mid-2009.

Even developer Manticore got in on the meme:

Blue Steel grinds his coffee with his teeth and boils the water with his rage over Tub Ci's release.
Blue Steel didn't come by his powers; he sprang full grown from the forehead of Zeus ready for battle.
Blue Steel doesn't sleep. He waits … for another crack at the Clockwork King.
Castle and BABs put Shield Defense in the game because Blue Steel told them to … or else.
Blue Steel has no Secondary powers. All his powers are Primary.
If you can see Blue Steel, he can see you. If you can't see Blue Steel, you may be only seconds away from defeat.
Blue Steel doesn't register as a hero. The city registers heroes so Blue Steel doesn't have to take them down.
Blue Steel told Statesman that PPD trumps FP and Statesman shut up.
Blue Steel destroyed the periodic table, because the only element he understands is the element of surprise.

It might be vaporware, but if it ever does become reality, Ship of Heroes looks promising.

The new SRW game, Super Robot Wars T is out now, and as with the previous two games it has an English language version that's not available in North America. Its in-progress playthrough can be seen here. The game features some series that I never would have expected to see in a game like this ... most notably Cowboy Bebop.

I'd love to see a crossover of all of the factions of the C&C games so far, basically including the Tiberium setting, Red Alert setting, and Generals setting.
