SPEAKING OF Hillary Clinton & Margaret Thatcher...!
Fun random fact, most of the Tyranid creatures for Warhammer 40,000 are named for semi-archaic derogatory terms for women: Harpy, Crone, Harridan, Termagant, Dominatrix, and so forth.

The fear at least as I see It comes from the association of Atropos with Death, Atropos was the one who cut the thread of fate and shuffled you off into the great unknown. The notion of old age and infirmity which everyone deals with and is utterly inevitable really terrified people in those ages and still does in many ways today

its why we see the Wicked Queen in Snow white turn into an old woman to appear frail and helpless to lure Snow White in.
Dr. Silverback has wryly observed that this is like trying to teach lolcats about Shakespeare

Old women, especially very old women who live on their own away from the village and without family, tend to Know Things™️. In a way, Discworld’s Granny Weatherwax might be one of the most realistic depictions of “the old hag” in fiction. She’s a powerful spellcaster, but she mostly gets her way through “headology,” her personal blend of psychology, politics, deception, and intimidation.

The Discworld’s trolls call her "Aaoograha hoa" (She who must be avoided). Dwarves name her "K'ez'rek d'b'duz" (Go Around the Other Side of the Mountain).

Damn you beat me to it! She fits particularly well because, as you mentioned earlier, she was seen as both definitely dangerous and really helpful. I actually really enjoy her stories, something about someone who can get along by pure stubbornness and willpower is highly entertaining.

“Granny’s implicit belief that everything should get out of her way extended to other witches, very tall trees and, on occasion, mountains.”

Total: Abilities: 18 / Skills: 18--9 / Advantages: 7 / Powers: 84 / Defenses: 22 (140)

-Among the more legendary beasts in Castellia are the mighty Hydras- monstrous, reptilian creatures with dinosaur-like bodies and numerous, serpentine necks. They are infamous for their ability to regenerate heads after they have been decapitated, often sprouting two heads where the stump of one lies. Nearly unkillable, only the greatest of heroes have managed to stop them. Adventurers have both dreams and nightmares of facing such creatures, as defeating even a small specimen is an act of great skill, strength, intelligence and courage, as one must dodge multiple heads, eliminate them, and then burn the stumps so that the creature will eventually become helpless and dead. Typically, adventurers work in pairs (with one wielding a torch), or with a Wizard using Fire Magic- few would ever attempt to destroy one of these creatures in a solitary battle.

-Hydras are distantly related to Dragons, being nowhere near as intelligent, but nearly as large at their maximum. There exist numerous types of Hydra, with the Lernaean possessing the most regenerative might. More basic Hydras lack the longevity, while others possess either tremendous Fire Breath or Ice Breath, or incredibly-potent venom. Both Lernaeans and Basic Hydras may have either ability.

Jab's Notes: The Hydra, like the Minotaur or Medusa, is a solitary creature from Greek Mythology translated into being an entire species in D&D. However, in this gaming world, they occupy a strange role as a Dragon-like threat for the mid-tier fighters, sporting deadly attacks and being very hard to kill. It's basically an unthinking monster who attacks, with Multiple Heads and Regeneration limited to slashing damage (in an era of swords being the primary heroic weapon, that's a big deal). It takes a clever hero to take one out, using either fire or blunt damage.

-The Monster Manual includes SEVERAL different "levels" for the creature, each with a different amount of heads, a different size, and each with the potential for being Lernaean, Cryo or Pyrohydras. This, I guess, varies up the threat a little bit. It gives them a pretty complicated bio, complete with numerous different Challenge Ratings. I decided to make multiple levels of them as well, using my Hydra from Disney's "Hercules" as a beefed-up PL 12 baseline, while adding four variants, a la the Monster Manual.

-The actual Hydra tale varies, but Hercules and his partner Iolaus defeated it, and probably buried the creature with a rock, as the final head was immortal and could not be slain.

Which explains so much of 2016.
That would be really funny if there wasn't some sad truth to it. :(
Look how hated Thatcher is in England, too. Her funeral procession had people writing "ROT IN HELL, MAGGIE" on the walls the procession passed. Granted, her policies screwed over SCORES of people in the UK, but yikes- she'd been out of office for years.
Which is why Marvel naming Captain Britain's new daughter 'Maggie' seems a bit weird to me.

Not so much,if you really think 'bout it; Brian's mothers middle name was Margaret which is the long form of Maggie.

Yeah I know, but given how the name is so inherently tied to Thatcher, I doubt many people in Britain would name their child 'Maggie'

And look how respected and admired The Baroness Thatcher is by conservatives, both in the UK and abroad. Republicans in the US absolutely love her.

It’s pure tribalism, I think, liberals/progressives all tend to regard the Iron Lady as this anti-christ boogeyman, far above and beyond the usual levels of disdain partisans of one side feel towards successful leaders of the other side. The “Left” hated Pres. Reagan too, but never with the same level of vitriol they had for her.

Then again, I’ve always felt like liberals/progressives seems to have a special enmity for conservatives/libertarians who they assume should be on their side. The hatred directed at African-Americans, women, and/or LGBTs who are openly conservative is insane.

Anyway, enough politics! Have some Power Girl:

Brits like me (born in the 80's but too young to have memories of the state of the country at the time) have one positive thing to say about Lady Thatcher (A title that unfortunately sounds like a feminine hygiene product), because of her actions during the Falkland's conflict and other events (such as the Iranian Embassy siege) it showed us and the rest of the world that if you're British, or consider yourself so, no matter where you are on the planet the government will send help, whether to protect you or to extract you from danger.

I was thinking about how widespread the 'scary old lady' Hag myth is, I wonder if it's origins come from instances of lonely mentally ill women stealing other people's children to raise as their own. This happens semi-regularly even now, usually when the women has lost a child.

Intresting thing about that myth;a lot of psychologist's and Medical Professionals now think the steal the child because theirs recently died(either by SPDS or whatsitsnameagain.......I'll just call it Birthing Withdraw for now)and they can't mentally handle it.

There’s some research that links Toxoplasma gondii to various mental disorders, including schizophrenia. T. gondii is known to sexually reproduce in feline hosts and can easily jump from cats to humans. Ever since these findings linking toxoplasmosis to mental disease were first publish, the internet and the media have been awash in “crazy cat-lady stereotype proven by science!” Even though the research does not quiet say that...

On the other hand, the research does not not say it either.

Toxoplasmosis is usually not terribly serious, with modern medicine... But back when these myths were first being developed?

Well, I trust you to know your crazy cat-ladies. Particularly after that time when that one Cat-Lady was going to steal the "golden fleece" dress from Queen Bess of Belgravia and also wanted to have you killed because you won that award for the best dressed crime-fightress.

I'm a big fan of Hydras. Hydrae? Anyway, I think they're one of cooler looking monsters out there. Why did you have the area attacks only when recovering from damage? Is that some kind of frenzy attack?
