Colonel Dusk
Luck: 5/5
Hero Points: 2
Condition: Normal

Dusk stood at full height, hands behind her back in a rigidly trained posture, waiting patiently with Morpheus for Uplift to conclude his analysis. "Believe it? Why wouldn't I? This isn't the only planet that has magic users," Dusk might have been more skeptic in her youth and inexperience, but by now she's learned that just because something is beyond her experience doesn't mean it's impossible. "But then what's become of his 'life essence?' Is it destroyed? Expelled to elsewhere?" Dusk asked, face remaining unflinching and looking from Uplift to Shadowman.

Sebastian Blackwood
HP: 4

The sorcerer had sunk into one of the armchairs. A glass of something red was in his hands, and he took a long drink before tossing it aside when they turned to him for answers, the glass and drink vanishing into the shadows as he ruminated his own mystical scans.

"The soul is comprised of many parts. The exact details vary, depending on who you're asking, what they studied, their own personal histories, and what they believe in." he said in a somber tone, cradling his head in one hand, trying to put the ideas into words others could understand without having to divulge into the sheer horror this manner of curse caused.

"What is relevant now is this fact - we as sapient individuals require our souls to function as sapient. The curse that was inflicted upon Oaf is... well, dark in ways that speak of a truly twisted soul. Dangerous beyond compare and steeped in magics and powers that are best left untouched, even by the most experienced and powerful of sorcerers and entities. Not even gods wield curses like this without extreme care and consideration. This was done out of sheer spite. The next time that bi... witch and I meet, I will not hold back from lethal measures. She cannot be allowed to use such magics again." Shadows loomed threateningly in the background, but only served to sharpen their focus as the darkness cast by objects in the light, as Sebastian's grip angrily tightened on the armrest.

"The witch's curse reaches into the victim's body and wrenches from its depths the victim's soul. The soul is then bound in metaphysical chains covered in barbs and thorns, subjecting the victim to excruciating spiritual agony. It has been severed from the body, but is still tethered by the curse. Oaf's body still lives because part of his soul is still in there. But the parts that make him, well, truly alive are gone, bound beyond reach, unable to pass on to What Comes Next. The victim is alive and dead, their soul subjected to torment for eternity until the spell can be undone, or worse."

The glass is back again, in the other hand, as Sebastian takes another long gulp before tossing it away once more.

Dusk turned to look at Shadowman, this is a sorry state for the sorcerer to be in, and Morpheus too for that matter. "Morpheus! Shadowman! Focus! So we lost Oaf, but this is what we signed up for!" Dusk turned to face Morpheus. "So you recruited us, but don't think for one second we're bound and shackled here. Each of us still here decided your mission was worth our time and our effort, with all the risks that entails!"

Dusk turned to Shadowman. "And more important than the witch, you just said the spell can be undone, so how? What's involved? What resources are required? Oaf needs you now. You want to honour your comrade? Then carry on for him!"

Mei listened to what the others had to say. From her studies of the various martial arts, she knew that the spirit could be removed from the body - it was a technique of the internal 'soft' styles. But it took students of those disciplines decades of study to do such things willingly - to set their own astral forms free to experience the universe. So of course someone would find a crude way to do so to another.

She tried to recall if the monks of those esoteric styles ever stated there were dangers to the astral body - since they rarely interfered with anything, her family was never paid to attack them (and thus never learned much about them).

"I really should remedy that situation ..." Mei mused to herself.

"Spirit travel is an advanced technique for a few martial arts styles," she finally said out loud, "So there may be resources. If I can track them down, and convince them to help.

I believe one of the laws of magic is 'threefold return' - any harm you deal out, shall be returned to you threefold.

I would REALLY like to see that happen to that witch. I really would."

Everyone
Dusk turned to look at Shadowman, this is a sorry state for the sorcerer to be in, and Morpheus too for that matter. "Morpheus! Shadowman! Focus! So we lost Oaf, but this is what we signed up for!" Dusk turned to face Morpheus. "So you recruited us, but don't think for one second we're bound and shackled here. Each of us still here decided your mission was worth our time and our effort, with all the risks that entails!"
As Dusk snaps at him Morpheus seemingly imutable façade breaks and he crosses the space in between he and Dusk in seemingly a blink of an eye His shoulders are shaking with anger and he glares at the tall alien soldier his eyes blazing with rage, and other emotions as they bore into Dusks his fists clenching and unclenching, he stands right in front of her unflinchingly practically nose to nose despite her having nearly a foot of height on the man.

Dusk though doesn't flinch and returns his glare with the Iron self control of someone whose seen a thousand battle. A hard fought test of wills happens in those brief moments while she addresses Sebastian.
Dusk turned to Shadowman. "And more important than the witch, you just said the spell can be undone, so how? What's involved? What resources are required? Oaf needs you now. You want to honour your comrade? Then carry on for him!"
Morpheus though is broken from his anger by Portias soft voice which breaks through to him almost easier then someone shouting could.

As she says this Morpheus takes a deep breath and visibly struggles to get control of his anger he turns away from Dusk and only Portia is able to see the brief almost fluid shift of his facial features . Shes seen this before though, and is well aware of this aspect of him, she doesn't give any indication save a small raised eyebrow which he acknowledges with a subtle nod.

Morpheus then turns around and his usual controlled façade is restored as he looks at Dusk and nods appreciatively in her direction, wasn't this why he brought her in, in the first place? To lead, to provide direction? He starts to speak his voice precise and cool.

"Uplift if you had information on his bio chip could you use it somehow to help Oaf?"

"Mr. Sebastian can you look into any rumors of how this spell can be undone?"

He pauses a moment and his voice takes on an almost arctic chill "We are going to save our friend, and then we are going to make those responsible pay dearly."

Uplift

Uplift shook his head as Dusk and Morpheus argued, deciding to leave them to it.

Upon being addressed, he quickly thought through the possibilities, slowly pruning the ones he didn't think had potential.

"Not by itself, but it would be a start. However, I would need the original source code from the programming that created it. However, that means I require something directly from the Usurper's computer systems. Now, this might be hidden on Sanctuary, but I suspect that'll be a bigger problem. Even if I have it, it won't be enough by itself. I'm going to need magical assistance and no disrespect Shadowman, a specialist in souls, which doesn't seem to be part of your resume."

Shadow-Man
HP: 4

Sebastian almost barked a caustic laugh at the martial artist's views of magic. Too many people thought that magic worked on simple rules like that. In truth, such ideas were only misunderstandings or interpretations based upon incomplete information. And frequently, the beliefs of those who didn't practice sorcery or any other form of magical arts were intentionally misinformed to keep magical secrets secret.

As words began to speak of asking Sebastian Blackwood to search for means to break the curse, the sorcerer bit back the childish urge to leap from his seat and declare that he already knew how to break the curse. Quite a few ways, in fact.

But how to tell them that the cost was not worth it? It would have been simple, really. He'd need to research a few things and gather reagents and ensure the timing was just right, but he knew how to tear upon a rift into the Beyond and contract with entities better left dead and slumbering. How to bind them to his will and have them do his bidding. All it would take is the relaxing of morals, and the breaking of a few promises that he had made one cold, lonely night. Promises that no one would care if he broke, should he succeed in bringing Oaf back. Sacrifices that would make little difference in the macro-view of things, as no one would care if certain things were lost or stolen away to never be returned. Even if some of those things were people.

But the cost wasn't worth it. Not because Oaf was not worth the cost...

Sebastian simply couldn't bring himself to believe Oaf would feel the actions Sebastian would have to take to bring him back were worth all that. Not with the ways the sorcerer knew...

... Sebastian would need to spend time in his libraries in Darkholme. And perhaps get help.

Uplift, a layman in the ways of the arcane, was surprisingly right. Sebastian knew a great deal about soul magic. It came as part of the territory with Sebastian's own brand of magic, and the whole host of dark magic he had studied in his youth. Not to mention that you have to learn quite a bit about the soul in order to pull the wool over many a demonic entity when your own soul was on the line.

But he wasn't much of a specialist when it came to the soul, especially with regards to the primordial magics this curse was made up of. And Sebastian would need a specialist on hand to save Oaf - if only to check his work and make sure he didn't mess any(every)thing up.

Not to mention that a specialist might have a method Sebastian was overlooking at present, for all of Sebastian's options pointed to costs and risks that Oaf would never forgive Sebastian for taking.

"Well, I'll see if I can find something in my libraries. Maybe track down a psychopomp to help me out..." Sebastian offered, nodding slowly as he wracked his memory. The sorcerer paused when Dusk, Portia and Uplift gave him an odd look at "pscyhopomp". He rolled his eyes and explained, "A shinigami, or a grim reaper, in the common vernacular."

Everyone

Morpheus takes all of this in in silence before finally nodding.

"Very good then. lets get to work, we have a friend to save." The unspoken woe to anything that gets in our way is clear in his tone.

As the group scatters to their various endeavors Morpheus lays a gentle hand on oafs massive forehead. "Rest my friend your family will save you, I promise."

He then turns and leaves the med bay while Portia follows him he whispers quick instructions to her as they walk. She soon leaves for a trip while he makes a few phone calls, and prepares to tap some information sources he hasn't used in a while.

Sebastian meanwhile pours through tomes and other manner of arcane reading he finds precious few leads that do not take him down darker paths then hes comfortable taking, or leave him paying prices hed rather not pay. Int he course of his researcht hough he does come up with some interesting rumors several of which seem to inidcate a promising line of inquiry, mostly ghost stories all around one name.

Nenia.

Still even this name and the rumors that spawn it give him reason to pause and contemplate. Death's Daughter, Reaper, Azraels pawn, Samingas main squeeze--that one he finds a bit laughable given the source but still--, the Crow, and others. All of them point to a being who walks paths very few could tread without giving up some very precious things in return.

Still if shes real and can help Oaf then he must find her. He will find her.

Uplifts fingers fly over the keyboards at breakneck pace as he searches, its only after a series of near setbacks that he finally finds what hes looking for. A chance, slim and very dangerous but a chance none the less. A lone base used by the Usurper right here in Bay City, sealed off and left underground because of the potential danger of the traps after the attempted invasion he launched that nearly destroyed the Bay Area and Gave rise to Bay City. Now abandoned and ripe for the picking if he can find a way inside to the bases computer core.

Dusk has no contacts or investigative or tech skills or arcane lore at her disposal to use in this matter, but she does have an unyielding will and determination to succeed. To her its not just a matter of if but when, and how they will bring Oaf back. So she sharpens her skills in the manors adequate training facilities, readying herself for when the time for action is to come.

Portia meanwhile travels on a private plane across country to Boston where Morpheus has sent her on a recruitment mission. Shes scouted this individual before in the build up to the teams coming together. Now shes been asked to extend an invitation, A job offer and a chance at redemption that the person she seeks had spoken about. For his family and himself.

--ooOoo--

In Boston at a night club a group of local toughs starts getting too frisky with one of the girls dancing on the stage. too much whiskey and not enough brains will usualy do that but in general they arent much trouble.

Tonight though one Jimmy Doolan thinks because of who his uncle is he can get away with anything. This includes harassing Shannon, the attractvie red heads protests to the contrary. Just as it looks like his attentions might turn to the agressive a firm hand lands on his shoulder and yanks him backwards as casually as if he were a feather. A firm glare sets his two friends even drunk as they are in their seats. A warm smile and somewhat suggestive nod of grattitude from Shannon is all the thanks he needs.

Jimmy though doesnt seem to take a hint and pulls a knife out--what moron at the front door let that get passed him the big man wonders-- and stabs the Bouncer right between the shoulder blades. the PLINK of the knife snapping in two as he does is audible even over the clubs music, as is the screams of pain as a hand closes over Jimmys and squeezes until the blood passes from his face and Jimmy passes out.

Jimmy is flung uncerimoniosuly at his two friends hard enough to flatten the three of them like bowling pins and Daniel snarls two words "Get Out!"

the two morons grab their buddy and scramble for the door overturning a table and knocking a waitresses tray out of her hands causing Daniels eyes to roll with a sigh. He looks around the club and shakes his head as Shannon and the girls resume their dancing. He hadnt planned on working here for too long but hey it pays the bills so what can he say. At least the views good, and the drinks arent watered down.

As Daniel makes his way to another table where a couple of marines on liberty are enjoying their weekend a little too freely he cant help but notice the beautiful asian woman watching him quietly from a corner table. She sees his handling of the situation and nods to herself sure now that shes found who she was seeking. When next Daniel looks at the table where she was sitting though theres no one there the woman having vanished as if she were never there in the first place.

--ooOoo--

On a street corner a young woman watches an accident unfold. The crashed car and the bicycle it hits in the drivers carelessness are nothing she hasn't seen before. What really draws her attention is off to the side. While EMTs work feverishly to revive the young man in the yellow bike shirt and shorts, the young womans attention is drawn to the Cyclist himself standing right next to her. Together the two look down as the EMTS work to save him but she knows its futile, she could see the mark on him she always did, see the reaper near by waiting for him.

The Reaper looked at her and nodded but made no move towards her. Then the Reaper was standing near the cyclist and offering the young man her hand. The woman in the black trench coat took the cyclists hand and gently coaxed him towards the light. The gentle light washed over the young womans face ever so briefly as the pair disappeared into it.

Still the young woman wasn't there just to watch the pasing no she was waiting for something, and she found it a moment later. Suddenly her body stutterd as if she were in a glitchy online game. She lashed out a hand and caught what she was aiming for. A chain dripping with Ectoplasm, and the cobwebs of the weaver spiders that were all over the worlds she could see.

She yanked hard on the chain and pulled what it was attached to back to her. The spectre shrieked at its captor, but the young lady ignored its clatter and concentrated on reeling in her catch. She was angry now and the spectral aura around her showed, she had been delayed by a bloody delivery truck of all things cutting her off and hadn't been able to get to the Spectre in time to prevent it adding its sixth victim to its count.

Still she could make sure it didn't harm anyone else before she was done. Finally the spectre turned on the length of the soul chain and snarled at her as it leapt like a slavering dog. She snapped the chain putting a bit of her own power into it and lashed the spectre around like a fish caught on a line.

Finally after a hard fight she managed to chain it and wrap the bastard in its own chain. She dragged it away pointedly ignoring the stares of people who had watched her grunting and yanking on something they couldn't see. She returned their stares with a "What?" look and took her prize through a door, as she stepped through the door led to a twisted cityscape that looked like Bay City but a Bay City that was dull grey drab and falling apart. She dragged her capture to a small hill where she presented it to a group of scowling unhappy looking ghosts all of them armed and armored in soul steel. She smiled back at them but they didn't respond save to take the captive spectre away, its enraged howling turned into hi pitched yowls of terror as it sensed its punishment was near, the guards hand her a small bag which she confirms is what shes been looking for. She smiles again salutes the guards then leaves.

Off to the side of the road, any road , every road really, sits a small diner at the crossroads, any crossroads, every crossroads, all crossroads. The diners outside is unremarkable looking like any of a thousand such places, the only sign is a simple clock pointed at 12 midnight exactly.

At the counter sits the young woman. She smiles at a small boy sitting next to her eating a piece of pie. She reeaches out and hands him the small bag. He looks into it and his melancholly look turns gleeful as he pulls out the small toy car. She sees the tiny chain attached to it quietly fade away and as it does the last chain holding the boys spirit is removed.

The man behind the counter shakes his head and smiles mysteriously at her before acknowledging someone new coming in to the diner.

too be continued

"May the saddest day of your future be no worse than the happiest day of your past."-Irish blessing

(Several hours later...)
As Daniel stepped out of the Bar,he finished buttoning up his thick Pea Coat and headed down the street.as he trod his large boots towards home,he couldn't help but dwell upon the past a little. If he'd been his former self,he would've taken Shannon up on that "offer" she'd made when he bailed her out of Doolan's youngest advances, but with his new mindset,he just couldn't bring himself to do it.As he crossed the street towards St.Geromime's,he thought about the last time he "talked" to Finnigan...

(Flashback note:Rose Tattoo should be playing right now...)
As he walked into Finnigan's usual hang out,he was greeted with about as much disdaine as a Cop would've been.Holding his large, beefy arms to the side as Peter&Paul[he alway's thought that was rather ironic] frisked him to make sure he wasn't packing anything and then let him through.
As he sat down at the Table,The two bitter enemies looked each other over.To Daniel's eyes the man hadn't changed a day in 4 years. He still had the stomach of an Overweight drinker, the Brown pulled back hair of a Bad Elvis Impersonator, and a Goatee that failed to hide his double chins....
The silence stretched on for what felt like forever and a day as Finnigan finally broke it by saying,in an increadably thick Gaelic accent

{You look good for a man in a coma,last i heard....}
Finnigan motioned for the bartender to bring a couple of Pints as he continued speaking, almost oblivious to Daniel's hand tightning ever so slightly
{i find it ironic personally that of all the people you'd visit after you wake up like Ol' Lazarus himself,it would be humble old me....}
As the Bartender hurried over with the pints,Daniel's hand started turning white as bone as Finnigan said, almost smiling as he rubbed verbal salt into Daniels wounds. After the Two Large Pints were put in front of them,Joe raised one of them up and said out loud
{To the Health of all those here and to our FAMILIES....}
At those words,Daniel snapped.Grabbing Joe across the Table,he threw him right into both Peter&Paul sprawling all three on the floor like set's of cloths. As they lay there stunned,Daniel walked over to the three and squatted down near one of their loose guns[what looked like a Colt Magnum to him]and took a hold of it,saying all the while in the Gaelic they were using
{you know,Joe, if it were up to me right now,I'd bury you and your two stooges here so far in the ground you'd come up somewhere in China.Unfortunately,i Promised Lucy....You know Lucy Joe,your WIFE THAT YOU STOLE FROM ME!}
Slowly Crushing the gun in his hand into a metal lump,Daniel slowly continues speaking his voice almost a whisper in the wind
{Anyway,i promised her that i wouldn't hurt you due to....circumstances.Oh,I'll keep my promise and won't even touch you anymore,but get this into your Thick Skull:if you EVER hurt her in any way,shape,form or fashion,I'll come down on you like a Thunderbolt From God&Saint John hisownself....}
Throwing what's left of the gun in front of Finnigan,Daniel turns around and walks straight out of the Bar into the night....

As he walked up the church stairs,Daniel thought to himself that sure,he'd lost 4 years of his life and the Woman he'd loved to a Mobster he tried to get out from under. He could've become bitter and cursed God for all that was done to him....But he wouldn't do that.Instead of drowning in a bottle like his late mother had done,he'd picked himself up by the Short&curlies and tried to start over.Sure,it wasn't easy, but it couldn'ta been easy bein' Nailed to a Cross either,so who was he to complain and moan?

After performing the sign of the cross near the Holy Water,Daniel headed towards the candles.Lighting one,he muttered to himself in Latin as he kissed his St.George medallion
"May God have mercy on the souls of the wicked and the unrepentant.May he forgive us for the sin's we commit with both our hearts and bodies, and forgive us our tresspasses into obsinities..."

Heading home after visiting St.Geromime's,Daniel felt a little better about everything that had happened to him in life.Sure,it would be a long road to Redemption, but every great Adventure start's with a Long Journey. His Bearded Face split into a wide grin as he saw the Stairs to him home Matterialize out of the cold Boston night. He could just hear his Daughter's high Tennor talking to her mother about the Day's happening at Catholic School...

Cue This Night by Black Lab

There are things I have done
There's a place I have gone

A dark night, a woman falls back, arms stretched out before her, reaching up towards the camera. Behind her, a city street, cars rushing by beneath, the streets slick with rain.

This woman is not dressed as someone that you would find upon the streets. No, this figure is cloaked in a whirling mass of the Unquiet Dead, bare skulls and grasping hands creeping across her form. Her face, if it is indeed a her, a leering mask of death.

FLASH

There's a beast and I let it run
Now it's running my way

The figure is wielding two huge chains, a flash of dark steel and then the eye follows it out as it envelopes a slathering beast, a mockery of a hound but with a screeching man's face. The chains wrap around it, even as the dripping fangs reach towards her face.

FLASH

There are things I regret
That you can't forgive you can't forget

Another day, another time, another person? Drizzling but in the sun. A pier. A pale young woman, hidden in a dark turtleneck sweater and dark unkempt tresses, a long skirt, gazing down into the dark waters. A tear drops as she places down a rose, touching the waters below together. A shimmer of light, another woman gazes back from inside the water, pale, the marks of choking fingers around her throat.

FLASH

There's a gift that you sent
You sent it my way
So take this night and wrap it
Around me like a sheet
I know I'm not forgiven
But I need a place to sleep

The young woman, cast in monochrome shadows and light. A skeletal hand, a tattered robe.. handing her a mask. She places it upon her face and ectoplasm flows down over her form, the remains of the dying wrapping around her- the figure from before. The tattered form smiles down upon her, revealing a lipless face.

FLASH

So take this night
And lay me down on the street
I know I'm not forgiven but I hope
That I'll be given some peace

The figure continues to hurtle towards the street. Her arms folding over her chest, fingertips touching the opposite shoulders. Relaxed as the falls.. falls.. falls. Mere feet from the top of a taxi.

FLASH FLASH FLASH FLASH

There's a game that I played
There are rules I had to break
There's mistakes that I made
But I made them my way

A series of quick shots. The skeletal woman in furious battle. The woman handing a chained toy car to a beaten young boy..and the boy disappearing in a glow of light. A bringer of justice, a bringer of peace.

So take this night
And wrap it around me like a sheet
I know I'm not forgiven
But I need a place to sleep

FLASH

The skeletal woman stares at the viewer.. even as she slams into the car beneath, caving in the roof. The car lets out a muted alarm.

So take this night
And lay me down on the street
I know I'm not forgiven
But I hope that I'll be given some peace
Some peace, some peace

Her eyes reopen, a bitter smile as she starts to rise again.

NENIA- Coming Soon
We rise from the ashes so that new legends can be born.

Colonel Dusk
Luck: 5/5
Hero Points: 2
Condition: Normal

Dusk had finished compiling her notes for the team's debrief on their previous operation; tactical review, performance, etc. and while she could patrol the base and tell if the others need to take a step back or refocus she certainly couldn't provide shocking new insights into their fields of expertise. Dusk was still sore from the previous battles so physical training would have to wait, and this planet was sorely lacking in pleasure slaves, not that she would expect the average puny human to remain in one piece.

Thankfully Morpheus did have things that needed doing around town...

"Since coming here, I've had to deal with spies, liars, cheats, magicians, self-duplicating thieves, the loss of one of the few people I actually like on this planet, and those puny abominations you call clowns! So let me assure you, I do NOT have the patience for being stalled right now!" Dusk says to two men she is holding by the ankles in each hand, dangling them over the edge of the building they're on!

"Y-you can't scare us! Our bosses told us you haven't actually killed any-WAAAAHHH...!!!" before he can finish his sentence Dusk hurls him over her shoulder, chucking him into the air where he lands painfully on the opposite side of the roof from her. His friend, unable to see what became of him at the height he's being held, looks very afraid now.

"Well?"

"Yeah... yeah I'll tell you what I know..." he whimpers.

"Good."

He had a lead on a Usurper, thankfully within spitting distance. The fact that nobody had investigated it was more troubling. Had it fallen through the cracks?

Lets find everything I can. Avoid going in blind, but also potential weak points, like avoiding the main entrances and going in from beneath. Some of my contacts might know something about it as well.

You do not underestimate the Usurper!

  • Interlude: Into the Valley

Because I could not stop for Death,
    He kindly stopped for me.
    ~Emily Dickinson
In a lonely Diner off to the side of a road, any road, every road, Nenia sat there enjoying what was quite possibly the best coffee one could enjoy, if one didnt consider that the person serving it was a Mercurian and word bound angel of death herself.

Sakiel smiled at her as he passed making polite conversation, he always did his smile warm and gentle like most of his kind. She returned the smile and the conversation though briefly as was her way, and he never pressed her for more then she was willing to give, that much she was grateful for. He looked up and nodded as someone new entered the Midnight Diner. The cold shudder down her spine was immediate as the Ferryman sat near her at the counter a couple of stools down. This one was a woman--Tali she thought the name was--dressed as most of them were in long coats, the spectral sword across her back the badge of Charons chosen, only manifesting as a vague fog to her sight; but she knew the Zanpakuto was fully capable of leaping to bright technicolor lethality with a thought from its wielder invoking the living spirit inside.

Tali sat down and ordered a slice of the Diners famous apple pie, and a cup of coffee the steaming beverage as dark as night even while the ferryman poured several spoonfuls of sugar into the dark liquid before taking a long slow sip and sighing gratefully. She looked over at Nenia and gave her a grunt of acknowledgement.

"Heard you found the Hyena yesterday, and stopped it before it took any more lives." She spoke her conversationally, Nenia not even remotely suprised at the speed of the spectral grapevine, the dead as it tuned out were bgger gossips then the living most times. As she spoke Sakiel slid a slice fo warm apple pie to her with a dollop of vanlla icecream on top. Tali dug into the slice hungrilly before sighing dreamilly.

As the two women chatted Nenia couldnt help but notice Sakiel pause briefly in the middle of his work and look out of the window as if searching for something hed heard. The Mercurian was unusually pensive she noticed usually having a face that spoke of the friendliest person you ever met or a poker face that could make Mount Rushmore blink.

And welcome to the newest chapter

Boston

Daniel Harpers life had taken many turns both good and bad in its time. So the appearance of a beautiful Asian woman in his home didn't surprise him in the slightest. Nor did the offer of a job, hed received many such visitors and many such offers before usually various types from the old life trying to drag him back into more shenanigans that could get him tossed in jail or worse.

So his answer was a pat no before she could finish her offer. Mei as she introduced herself wasn't to be dissuaded so easily nor did it seem she was even remotely intimidated by his physical presence in even the slightest way, the quirking of one slim eyebrow seeming to say Ive seen bigger.

She continued her offer and then left vanishing as cleanly as shed appeared literally exiting his house the moment his back was turned as if shed never been there. She did leave a card though and a number. The card read Phalanx industries Security Services we shield your back. The Number on the back of the card when he checked was a local Hotel room. A quick check of Phalanx showed the corporation to be a legit of new Security Firm who apparently helped take down a wealthy businessman in Bay City a day or so back.

And if the letter of introduction left behind was any indication they were looking for some new muscle. But was really made things interesting was that the offer included a lot fo the usual enticements--home, moving expenses paid, generous salary and benefits etc-- but added to it was a small post script, the letter offered a chance, it mentioned something hed only spoken to once in confession, the guilt over his past, the offer of a chance to do some good by helping people had a certain appeal, he need only call the young lady when he was ready.

Decisions needed to be made time the letter stated was of import, and the job would begin soon.

Nenia

Paper bags and angry voices
Under a sky of dust
Another wave of tension
Has more than filled me up
All my talk of taking action
These words were never true
- Linkin Park, Runaway

Sandy's stomach snarled as it was reintroduced to her spine. It had been a few days since she had a good meal. Hard to pay the bills when you couldn't keep down a job. Most employers weren't interested in hearing about her other 'job'. Sakiel was merciful though, who would have expected an angel of death to be so caring?

Most of her words came as a soft mumble around the edge of her turtle neck sweater, the better to hide the signs of her calling.

A softer whisper, "It needed to be put down. Vicious." her hand holding her side, reminding herself that the ribs were still broken from the fall.

Another bite of the pie, savoring the taste. Apples- signs of guilt, immortality, anarchy. A touch of bitterness. Good. Trying to enjoy it before it turned into ashes on the tongue.

Her stomach grumbled again, annoyed that it had been so long since it had been filled. More. Always more.

"Back to work?"

Could she say no? Was she willing to pay the price of refusal? She was in so deep, it didn't seem possible. How often did the dead return to life? How often was it not a horrible tragedy?
We rise from the ashes so that new legends can be born.
