Momus

Post by Jabroniville »

MOMUS (aka Querella, Mockery, Blame)
Role:
Minor Figure

Momus in Mythology: Momus is the God of Unfair Criticism- essentially the God of Snarkers. He's said by Hesiod to be the son of Nyx, and is fabled to be able to find fault in anything. A saying was that "Even Momus" could not criticize something- a sign of perfection. He's a minor God and wasn't worshipped, but Reinaissance workers started seeing him as a symbol of mockery and criticism against authority. Elsewhere, he became a soft-headed comic figure.

-Momus is a rather obscure character, and one of the many children of Mother Nyx. He represents mockery and blame on a conceptual level, acting as a negative influence on mortals, much as his brothers Thanatos (Death) and Hypnos (Sleep). Though seemingly a minor figure, he goads on satirists, political upheavals and all manner of discontent, effectively causing as much trouble as his brothers.

Sing to me of the man, Muse, the man of twists and turns
driven time and again off course, once he had plundered the hallowed heights of Troy.

The Muses in Mythology: The Nine Muses are important figures in Greek myth, and frequently given respect- most Greek plays indeed feature the playwrite speaking directly to the Goddesses, pleading with them for memory and guidance. The Muses each represent one aspect of the arts, though there were initially only three of them. Hesiod, Homer and others suggested nine, and the number stuck.

-The Muses are the nine daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne, the Titaness of Memory, giving them great credibility- Art descends from Memory and Power. They are Calliope (Epic Poetry), Clio (History), Euterpe (Flutes & Lyric Poetry), Thalia (Comedy), Melpomene (Tragedy), Terpsichore (Dance), Erato (Love Poetry), Polyhymnia (Sacred Poetry) & Urania (Astronomy). So mostly different kinds of poetry (given that this was the largest form of public entertainment at the time, having Goddesses of different GENRES was important). They were made subserviant to Apollo, the Son of Zeus, who was himself a master of many arts. The Muses appear often in Renaissance art, often with "props" to differentiate them.

-The Muses themselves do not really appear in that many myths, but are the mothers of a few names out there. One story featured a King who named his nine daughters after the Muses, suggesting they were as good as the Goddesses- naturally, this was disastrous and the girls were transformed into noisy Magpies, doomed to spend all their time chattering.

-Their effect on modern language cannot be underestimated: they give their names to Music, Amusement, Museums ("Mouseion"- places where the Muses were worshipped), and the act of "Musing upon" something.

-The Nine Muses are the daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne, the Titaness of Memory, who agreed to make children with the new King of the Gods when she realized that they would be ideal agents- individuals who were both immortal, and could record the progress of mortal civilization for their mother, who would store the information. The Olympians also found them exceptionally-useful as Ministers of Propaganda- though storytellers and performers, they were able to mold mortal cultures that benefited the Gods- Epic Poetry that awed them of the fury and splendor of the Gods. History that could be rewritten to make people more pliable or too self-involved and competitive to rise up and oppose Olympus. Songs and media that kept them distracted, or at least allowed them to let off some steam in productive ways that kept them from rising up.

-The Nine Muses are co-brides of Apollo (who is no more capable to settling for JUST THEM as he is for any single woman; he is his father's son, after all), and report to him as the Cultural Minsiter of the Olympian Empire, but also report to their mother (whom no God wishes to cross).

The Nine Muses:
CALLIOPE- PL 7 (148): Expertise (Writing) 16 (+20), Expertise (Oratory) 8 (+14) [12]

Calliope in Mythology: Calliope is the Muse of Epic Poetry (Calliope = "Beautiful-Voiced"), and carries a writing tablet. "Epic Poetry" is the big stuff- "The Oddysey", "The Iliad", and more, and the writers all invoke her at the beginning of their tales, hoping to remember things. A big, big deal in those days. Unlike the others, she laid with Ares, resulting in several sons, who all founded Thracian tribes. Her two other sons were much more famous- Linus (who is also said to be the son of Urania- see below), and Orpheus, whose tale of lost love, the failure to bring her back from the Underworld (despite bringing tears to the eyes of Hades and Persephone with his music), and his eventual murder at the hands of the Furies, told an epic tale. She may also be the mother of Hymenaios (Winged Love-God of Weddings).

-Calliope is the muse in charge of "Epic Poetry"- a shorthand for "Stories about the Gods"- her position was thus the most important- her tales told stories about the grandeur of the Gods... and also their fury. This did wonders in pacifying the mortal populations. Stories about the Gods were "fixed" to particular regions, and altered to give certain towns and planets a special sense of pride. Though the other Muses frequently chided her for her "terrible continuity", she dismisses this as keeping people on their toes, and making sure that each town could think of one of THEIR descendants as "the heroes".

-Though the most elite and important of the Muses, Calliope was also most unfaithful to Apollo, having several children with Ares (God of War- who better to provide "Epic" tales?). Like Aphrodite, the feminine Goddess is transfixed by the masculinity of the War God.

CLIO- PL 7 (143): Expertise (History) +14 (+20) [7]

Clio in Mythology: Clio is the Muse of History (Kleio = "Make Famous"), which in those days was an even more difficult job. She carried a scroll and books. Her son (by some random King) Hyacinth was said to be so beautiful that Apollo & Zephyros (the East Wind) fought over who would get to bone him (oh, Ancient Greece- never change), but a discus to the head killed him. He is said to be the world's first homosexual by one writer, and Apollo turned him into the flower that bears his name- the God's tears staining it in its distinctive color. She may also be the mother of Hymenaios (Winged Love-God of Weddings).

-Clio's position eventually came to be even more important than Calliope's- as the Minister of History, she was in charge of re-writing tales that fooled people into exaggerating the scope of past conflicts, and artificially dividing the people who worshipped the Gods- causing them to become much more mistrustful of one another. Those who control history, control the world, it is said. Though a History-themed Muse, she is good friends with Aphrodite- her son Hymanais is one of Aphrodite's many attendants.

EUTERPE- PL 7 (143): Expertise (Singing) 14 (+20) [7]

Euterpe in Mythology: The Muse of Song & Elegiac Poetry (Euterpe = "Well-Pleasing"), who carries a flute. Is said to be the mother of the Thracian King Rhesus, by Strymon (a River God), though Homer lists a different mother.

-Euterpe is the Muse of Song. Her position allows her to keep the people happy- a happy populace is a worshipful populace, after all. Societies that grow to angry and resentful of the Gods are often "fed" the most inane of "Pop Music", thus keeping the people good and stupid. When things are going too well and people get lazy, they're fed angry music that causes dissatisfied youth. Euterpe carefully monitors cultural and historical trends in the planets of the Olympian Empire, and is known to interfere with the media of "off-limits" worlds as well. When the Legion of Light discovered that she had disguised herself as the main writer of most of the top pop songs of the modern era, there was hell to pay- the destructive influence of Katy Perry's music would take years to reverse.

ERATO- PL 7 (143): Expertise (Porn) 14 (+20) [7]

Erato in Mythology: Erato is the Muse of Lyric & Romantic Poetry, which I like to think is like the old-school version of "Letters to Penthouse". She is often seen with a lyre and a crown of roses.

-Erato was titled with a few things over her time, but primarily, she is the Muse of Pornography. A vast, VAST element that infuses all societies throughout the world, though most keep them hidden. Graphic depictions of sex are as old as the media itself, and pornography in fact fuels technological advances over the centuries (porn is what decided the VHS/Betamax divide once and for all, and led towards larger hard drives on computers as well). Though the other Muses often turn their noses up at her, Erato has BY FAR the most influence over people at various points in history, something she's glad to snidely point out.

-While "Goddess of Porn" may seem like a strange occupation, the Gods are well aware that a fapping populace is a happy populace, and so her position is quite important, even without the technological boons good porn provides. She often disguises herself as producers and talent locators in the various industries (but not, as her sisters like to joke, a performer), giving advice and training to create the best possible product. Though hilariously bawdy and a beloved entertainer at Godly parties, Erato is one of the more serious and businesslike Muses when on the job.

MELPOMENE- PL 7 (143): Expertise (Writing) 14 (+20) [7]

Melpomene in Mythology: The Muse of Tragedy (Melpomene = "Celebrate With Song"), usually seen with the "tragic" frowning mask. She's one of the mothers of the Sirens.

-Melpomene writes the tear-jerkers of the world- things designed to tug at the heart-strings and make people cry. This has the role of discovering the innermost fears, desires and wants of the populace as well, giving her an important job, despite her limited domain. Some of her daughters turned into the infamous Sirens.

THALIA- PL 7 (148): Expertise (Writing) 14 (+20), Insight +6 (+12), Expertise (God) +4 (+12) [12]

Thalia in Mythology: The Muse of Comedy (Thaleia = "Festivity/Blooming"), seen with the "comic" happy mask. She is the mother of the Corybantes (armored male dancers who worshipped the Anatolian Goddess Cybele), by Apollo.

-Thalia is much like Melpomene, but believes she has the hardest job- as anyone in Hollywood will tell you, good comedy is the hardest thing in the world to write. ANYONE can write a sad story (just add tragedy!), but making people laugh is a tough skill to acquire. Comedy changes so much throughout the ages, and is so culturally-based, that she must constantly stay on her toes. In fact, few people are more knowledgeable about foreign cultures as Thalia, or as perceptive- the job of a comedian is primarily to NOTICE things, after all.

POLYHYMNIA- PL 7 (143): Expertise (Writing) 14 (+20) [7]

Polyhymnia in Mythology: The Muse of Sacred Poetry, ie. hymns (hence the name, Polymnia/Polyhymnia = "Many Hymns"), usually seen as quite serious and "pensive". She's also the Muse of Agriculture, Pantomime and Dance. She's said to have had no children.

-Polyhymnia is a more direct sermon-giver than Calliope, responsible for deciding the proper order of prayers, sermons, lectures and even the rituals and customs of worship. This changes from culture to culture, meaning she has to keep on her toes. She's the most pensive and humorless of the Muses.

TERPSICHORE- PL 7 (143): Expertise (Singing & Dancing) 14 (+20) [7]

Terpsichore in Mythology: The Muse of Choral Dance & Song (Terpsichore = "Delighting in Dance"), often seen dancing and/or carrying a lyre. She's been played by actresses from Rita Hayworth to Olivia Newton-John (in "Xanadu"!), and is one of the possible mothers of the infamous Sirens (who led ships to their doom). She may also be the mother of Hymenaios (Winged Love-God of Weddings).

-The official "Party Animal" of the Muses, Terpsichore is the best dancer and performer of the group, and frequently works alongside Euterpe to fashion popular culture. Some of her daughters became the Sirens.

URANIA- PL 7 (146): Expertise (Astronomy) 16 (+20), Technology +4 (+14) [10]

Urania in Mythology: The Muse of Astronomy (Ourania = "Heavenly One"), which is now more of a science, but back then also involved a lot of prophecy and flowery speech- most sciences were considered under the purview of Muses as well. She used compasses and a celestial globe. She is often associated with "Universal Love and the Holy Spirit", is given as the eldest Muse, and is said to have inherited the majesty and power of Zeus, and the grace and beauty of Mnemosyne. She is said to be the mother of Linus by Poseidon's son Amphimarus or by Apollo- in one tale, Apollo slays Linus for being a rival in singing; in another, Linus tries to teach Herakles to play music, but is killed by the demigod after punishing him terrible playing. SShe may also be the mother of Hymenaios (Winged Love-God of Weddings). Modern society names a lot of stuff after her, particularly in the field of (duh) astronomy.

-Urania is the most "book smart" of the Muses, and is in charge of Astronomy and the Sciences, slowly raising up (or holding back) mortals, so that knowledge takes its proper progression. In fact, many of her lessons to mortals are deliberately incorrect!

Jab's Notes: The Muses could be fun in stories. Not powerful individuals, or even known for having different personalities, they could be elite party guests, or actual manipulators on the Earthy sphere. The idea of blaming hated pop culture ideas on the manipulations of the Muses would make for fun gags.

The one detail that people really recalled from reading Homer in my high school mythology class... "The muses were nine in number."

There's an actual webcomic titled "The Author" written by an old acquitance of mine, Luigi "Bigio" Cecchi, which is pretty much based on this idea. In the story the Muses are a race of beings that stimulate creativity and feed on it. Granted Bigio is a bit crazy and added a few new Muses to the classic ones (e.g. Nete, muse of gaming, who speaks like a stereotypical pro-level gamer and inspire GMs), plus some of the existing Muses gained new areas of influence (e.g. Urania is now the muse of sci-fi writers).
The story plays very much like a sit-com with the main character (a parody of Bigio himself) has to deal with various muses messing up his life, although the last story arc is getting much more serious, with the appearence of a super-muse of sort (Polymateia), who seem to be absorbing all her sisters.
"You're right. Sorry. Holy shit," I breathed, "heckhounds.”

Ahh the muses
Calliope is the Muse of Epic Poetry
Calliope isn't just the muse of Epic poetry but any Epic writing, War and Peace, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Lolita, The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, The Dresden Files, Dragon Riders of Pern? All of them had Calliope whispering in their ears. heck TV and movies shes there wherever an epic story is to be told Spartacus, Cleopatra, The Ten Commandments even the Original King Kong and Godzilla movies, and whispering in the ear of some guy named Lucas about galaxies far far away. She was really exited about the rise of comic book movies and the Superhero genre in particular.

Clio in Mythology: Clio is the Muse of History
History it is said is written by the Victors, its something that's annoyed Clion no end over the last century or so. You see Clio while shes gotten a boost thanks to the advent of the Internet and various forms of Social media and telecommunications, is also a stickler for Historical FACT and it irks her no end when some revisionist moron starts spewing what to her is nonsensical farce, trying to add substance where there isn't any, or trying to shove History into a neat little box to fit their own narrative.

If she were a more petty goddess shed have some really innovative torments waiting for some of those people. but in the end she knows History will also correct it self so she soldiers on, besides shes known to have exaggerated history herself a bit in the past sooooo....
Euterpe in Mythology: The Muse of Song & Elegiac Poetry (
Euterpes also involved in the Voice and American Idol as well. say what you want about musical tastes but when singing is your thing you want to get it out there and what better way to do so then pushing a singing competition where millions of people vote on the winners?

Shes also responsible for the rise of mobile music tech like walkmans and Ipods etc so people can listen to music anywhere they want. Radio took a hit because of it but what can you do, In Euterpes case Video really did kill the radio star.
Erato in Mythology: Erato is the Muse of Lyric & Romantic Poetry, which I like to think is like the old-school version of "Letters to Penthouse".
Anyone ever wonder where Ron Jeremy got his break from? Fabio? yeah Erato was responsible for them both, hell every cheesey paperback romance ever, has her fingerprints all over it. Shes pushed the glory of porn as far east as japan-- hell tentacle porn wasn't even her idea something she kicks herself for not thinking of first--where Hentai is a big thing, to the Kamasutra in India--yeah some of the Deva are still talking about that collaboration--to the writing of Fifty shades of Grey which became a hotbed of controversy after its release and movie debut.

Shes still heartbroken about Hugh Hefners death though hell the man practically defined her role in things these days.
Melpomene in Mythology: The Muse of Tragedy
Poor Melpomene I mean you basically have a word that defines you where you make people SAD. and while crying can be a good catharsis--just watch Inside Out--she still gets flack at Olympian parties for being a bit of a debby downer. Still she makes her mark, every wonder why jack didn't fit on the door? yep, She was there when Old yeller died, Bambis mom? thalias still annoyed with her on that one more later--still she is as vital as the others because when people stop caring enough to cry to see the tragedy in things then they stop feeling any compassion at all. Sometime things need to make us sad or they lose any meaning at all.
Thalia in Mythology: The Muse of Comedy
Ahh comedy where a fart joke and a rubber chicken can get you as far as a pie in the face. Every genre from gallows humor to body humor to slapstick shes helped thrive and flourish. int he 30s and 40s she pushed some unknown vaudeville stars into the spotlight and we got the Three Stooges, she raised up a buddy pair and we got Abbot and Costello, and she found a family of goof offs and we got the Marx brothers.

Add TV and Animation into the mix and she found a struggling voice actor named mel blanc who made an entire generation laugh at the antics of a rabbit a duck and a chicken. Throw some comedians together and you get LIVE FROM NEW YORK its Saturday Night. She even got some comedy in some of the truly epic stories like Star wars--Ewoks, Jar Jar, Porgs-- and the Lord of the Rings --what about second breakfast?-- and others.

thalias been making us laugh in one form or another all the way heck she even got some guy named Disney to bring a cartoon mouse to lfe and made us laugh some more. Of course Melpomene had to stick her nose in and give us stuff like Snow white or Bambis mom..Cry!.. but Thalias not without a sense of Irony which you need to be a good comedienne, So when Mel pushed a tragic story about an ice queen and her sister, Thalia put a scene stealing snowman into the mix--take that tragedy!
Polyhymnia in Mythology: The Muse of Sacred Poetry,
Wow talk about a gal who needs to put her feet up from time to time. Poor Poly has to be one of the most put upon goddesses ever. Seriously with the worlds major religions so badly fractured into too many sects and cults and belief systems to count, its a staggering amount of work even for a goddess.

No wonder shes so pensive.
Terpsichore in Mythology: The Muse of Choral Dance & Song
Yep Terpsichore also threw her hand into the Voice and American Idol, she also has a hand in so you think you can dance and Dancing with the stars as well. dancing is as old as time practically animals do it to attract mates, and people do so as well. Shes hooked up more people then AT&T, and that's saying something. Its also why Aphrodite supports her efforts Albeit quietly after all get a couple dancing in the dark and can the old two sheet tango be far behind?

Terpsichore set quite a few trends off especially in the modern age, when the 90s hit she had Hammer dancing, and Vanilla Ice, she had Abdul dancing to cold Hearted Snake, and Shakiras hips not lying. The Macarena was a thing as well but hey they cant all be perfect, heck Terpsichore just shrugs with a smile and dances away into the night.
Urania in Mythology: The Muse of Astronomy (
One of the more interesting things to happen to Urania was in modern times when TV was invented. Namely around the time of the Moon landing. Those small steps for man and giant leap for mankind caused a MASSVIE awakening of scientific curiosity and it was enough to knock her on her godlike posterior-- wow head rush--she was able to foster several things in that time, Cosmo with Carl sagan and later Neil Degrasse Tyson, In search of with Leonard Nimoy, Bill Nye the science guy, hell she even got to have some fun on the Sci Fi scene with the rise of a little known syndicated show called Star Trek.

A couple of the more annoying things that happened to her though had to be when Pluto was declassified as a planet, she got no end of grief from Hades over that one--wasn't her fault really. That and the advent of so called Junk science which is like the grating of nails on chalkboard to her as she sees and hears people present so called theories as fact that makes her want to hit her desk with her head repeatedly, or preferably hit someone elses head with her desk repeatedly.
may also be the mother of Hymenaios (Winged Love-God of Weddings).
The muses as a whole though have collaborated on several things together. Americas--Etc--Got talent was a big hit combining all of their efforts together. They were a big part of the renaissance lifting humanity out of the dark ages, and creating some lasting works of art in the process.

There is one thing they all share though. Yep Hymenaios, you see they ALL are the mother of the winged god of Weddings. What happened is that they threw together their combined efforts, and created him with a little help from Apollo and Aphrodite.

Why you ask? You tell me where else you can get the combined effects of Epic poetry--wedding vows--, history--wedding toasts and memories--, singing--wedding songs--, Porn--wedding nights, and hook ups--, tragedy--runaway brides, and lost chances, and absent family--, comedy--wedding toasts and cakes smushed in faces, and drunken dancing--, sacred poetry--wedding vows and music--, Singing and dancing--brides dance, dances with fathers etc--, and science--Ie love written in the stars, and alcohol LOL--, then at a wedding?

LOL- that's a hell of a reply, Catsi- thanks :)! I consider Thalia to be the most insightful of the Muses- Comedy is so much about the TRUTH. It's why comedians are the biggest target of the modern-day political correctness movement- comedy is about ACTUAL correctness!

Or as they said in Family Guy (I god I'm quoting Family Guy, please help me), "Chris, we live in a POST-JOKE world!"

Eilythia in Mythology: Like a lot of minor Gods & Goddesses, Eilythia is basically a walking continuity error. For starters, most writers can't seem to agree on whether or not she's one person, or that there are numerous "Eilythiads" who guide childbirth. Never mind that many writers conclude that HERA is a Goddess of Childbirth, too. This was obviously an important domain for a Goddess in olden times- it's easy to forget with modern things like "hospitals" and "antiseptic", but childbirth used to be extremely, EXTREMELY dangerous, to the point where it was often fatal, and could mean certain doom if you were unlucky enough to get pregnant after 40 years of age. Given that societies have trouble functioning if the birthrate falls, and that history has been changed because of women dying in childbirth, this was a big deal.

-Eilythia likely debuted as a Minoan Goddess, and later became attributed as a daughter of Zeus & Hera. Her tales are very few- seen briefly in "The Iliad", and in another tale, sitting with her legs closed so that one of Zeus's mortal affairs cannot properly give birth. She has no effective character of her own, and only two children are named- the obscure Sosipolis ("City-Savior"), who had oaths sworn to him, and Eros, who is usually considered the son of Aphrodite.

-Eilythia is one of the more obscure Goddesses to modern civilization, owing to proper hygiene and advanced medicine making a "Cosmic Midwife" rather unnecessary to mortals. Lacking the outrageous personality of her siblings (particularly Ares and Eris), she is perhaps doomed to being unknown, but that suits her just fine. Eilythia prefers the quiet life, and has settled into a life of only caring for the pregnancies of highly-powerful and important beings- acts for which she barters favor and the funding that helps the Olympian Empire- even people not allied to the Olympians often shell out the money for her services. Otherwise, she joins Asclepius and his medically-gifted offspring in aiding developing cultures with primitive medical techniques.

-Though rarely engaging in conflict, and having little skill in battle, Eilythia has been involved in numerous dangerous situations. When the Cosmic Being Atraxia was giving birth to her city-sized offspring, Eilythia was kidnapped from her home by Atraxia's agents in order to aide the birth. As Atraxia was a known danger to civilization, numerous alien races allied in order to prevent the birth from going smoothly, hoping for the termination of both infant and mother. However, Eilythia made it clear this would cause a cosmic cataclysm, thus requiring the assistance of The Legion of Light in defending Atraxia's birthing chamber. Luckily, disaster was averted, and Atraxia was made to enact favors for the Legion, which came in handy when another Cosmic Being attempted to annihilate them months later- Atraxia came forth and the two fought for months, eventually ceasing hostilities lest the universe shudder. Eilythia considers it the third most-dangerous pregnancy she's ever seen through.

Jab's Notes: Obscure and rather boring, this Goddess doesn't really need to get up to much, but I figure being a "Cosmic Midwife" might have some storyline potential.

Divine Offspring:
Unknown Father: Sosipolis (Savior of Cities), Eros (God of Erotic Love- most have him as either a primordial entity or the son of Aphrodite)

Not just "any" mortal affair. The big guy! Heracles! This is why Herc wasn't a king, as his cousin (the guy who would go on to give Herc his labors) was born a little earlier and inherited the kingdom.

Reputation (Abductor of Men)- Eos no longer suffers from an unquenchable lust, but is still known to take lovers. She is a notorious flirt, though becomes genuinely attached to her paramours (think "serial monogamist", not "rampant village bicycle")- she claims this is the only thing that can cure her melancholy.
Relationship (Tithonus)- Eos fell madly in love with the mortal Tithonus, and arranged for him to be made Immortal (via stealing the Asgardians' Golden Apples of Immortality). Unfortunately, this could not maintain eternal youth, and so he withered into a dried-up old husk. Though she moves on to other men, she still maintains care of her former lover, doting on him.
Relationship (Astraeus- Husband)- The Titanian God of Dusk is rather obscure, and is a rather sullen, unhappy God. Eos tired of him after a few centuries, and largely ignored him. The grim Astraeus seems to shrug it off, but is occasionally possessed by a desire to win her back by any means necessary.
Relationship (Children)- Eos has had hundreds of children by this point, but most have met tragic, early ends.

Total: Abilities: 66 / Skills: 26--13 / Advantages: 8 / Powers: 82 / Defenses: 13 (182)

Eos in Mythology: Eos is the Goddess of the Dawn- said to open the heavens and allow the Sun to rise. She is actually a Titan, rather than an Olympian- the daughter of Hyperion & Theia (Light & Brightness). Her siblings are Helios & Selene (The Sun & The Moon), and her children are The Four Winds- bore from the Titan Astraeus; and Memnon & Emathion, from Tithonus. One tale goes that she slept with Ares, and a jealous Aphrodite cursed her with unquenchable sexual lust (!!), resulting in her abducting a number of handsome young men- a divine rapist. Her lover Tithonus was made immortal, but she forgot to ask for "eternal youth", resulting in him being trapped in the body of a decrepit old man, who eventually withered away. Her son Memnon's death in the Trojan War resulted in an image that inspired the Christian Pieta. Tales of Eos are drawn from the Etruscan Dawn-Goddess Thesan, and many of her children are involved with things that happen around Dawn or Dusk (such as the five "Wandering Stars"- the planets observable to the Greeks).

-Eos, The Dawnbringer, is a Titaness allowed to retain her old position by the Olympians, having maintained neutrality during the Titan War- she inherited Solar Powers from her father Hyperion (one of the imprisoned Titans), and was made to represent the Dawn, being seen throughout the lands casting Light in order to be seen as an important part of life. Eos is the mother of the Four Winds and five Wandering Stars (ie. the Planets as the Greeks could observe them), via Astraeus- Titan God of Stars, and her estranged husband. Eos was unfaithful and flighty even then, and frequently took lovers. When she crossed Aphrodite (by sleeping with her lover Ares), she was cursed with near-constant sexual desire- most myths about her involve her abducting male lovers, or dealing with her children. With Aphrodite's curse, she took even MORE lovers, though it wore off after only a few hundred years (Magic, even backed by Olympian Power, is rarely permanent).

-Most of Eos' mortal children met tragic ends (Memnon, an Ethiopian King, was slain in a glorious battle with Achilles during The Trojan War), resulting in a morose figure that could only be cheered by finding a new love every few decades- in this form, she resembled a lovesick teenager more than a millennia-old Titaness. Though her Godly duties were small (since Gods weren't ACTUALLY responsible for the turning of the Earth, after all), she was well-known to the Greeks of her day; later generations would largely-forget her.

-It was only in modern times that Eos became known once more- inspired by the heroism of Athena, Goddess of Wisdom, Eos began a career in super-heroics. At first, it may have seen like a lark, but she soon came to identify with the mourning mothers of lost children- knowing that pain herself, she fights to save them the same grief. As "Dawnbringer", Eos came to even join The Legion of Light, becoming one of the few Olympians to serve on an Earth superhero team.

-Despite her heroic intentions, Dawnbringer could annoy her teammates- a notorious flirt, she easily-disrupted team dynamics, especially as her crushes could seem rather passionate and all-consuming to mere mortals (an immortal Goddess must have diversions, after all). Athena was frequently embarrassed by a God she felt was entirely without-shame and unable to utilize proper wisdom. Though most of her teammates could find her irritating at times, discovering the depths of her affection for her withered old husband Tithonus (later turned into a Grasshopper), or her many children, improved her standing in their minds.

-As a mere Goddess of the Dawn, Eos is not as powerful as many of her solar-powered contemporaries (Sun Gods like Apollo & Hyperion are mightier), but her Dazzle Effects make her PL 11.

Jab's Notes: I always liked the concept of a "Goddess of the Dawn" with Sun Powers, but only recently decided to make ANOTHER Greek God a superhero. Though a God Buff, I was largely-unfamiliar with her story beyond Titanian heritage, and was surprised to find a rather deep, interesting character- the whole "Takes Male Lovers" thing practically seems like a nerdy male Rape Fantasy these days (and probably was back then, too- what other impression do you get from "Be careful, or a beautiful Goddess will steal you away and make you give her children"? In fact, her Roman version- Aurora- was often depicted in EROTIC POETRY, the Porn FanFiction of its day!), and sets the stage for a Goddess who acts like a Flighty Teenager- the exact opposite of stoic, boring, virginal Athena. There was added depth with all the children, which all of a sudden gave me the idea to make her a "Protector on Behalf of Mourning Mothers", justifying her superheroic career as something besides "Hey, this looks like fun!" (which was my initial concept for her). So she sort of ends up this mixture of "Happy-Go-Lucky Team Flirt" like Sersi was on The Avengers, and "The Mourning Protector" thing.

-I switched her name to "Dawnbringer" because "Eos" isn't really a household name- never mind the fact that is already Eris, Ares, Eros and Iris is the Greek Cosmology.

Divine Offspring:
With Astraeus (God of the Stars)- The Four Winds (Boreas, Notus, Eurus & Zephyrus), The Five Wandering Stars (Phainon/Saturn, Phaethon/Jupiter, Pyroeis/Mars, Eosphoros/Hesperos/Venus & Stilbon/Mercury), Astraea (Goddess of Innocence)

Famous Mortal Offspring:
With Tithonus- Memnon & Emathion- Memnon was a fabled King of Ethiopia, and a warrior on the level of Achilles- he was slain by the Greek hero and his army fled the Trojan War, helping doom Troy. Emathion was slain by Herakles.

Responsibility (Manic Depressive/Bipolar)- Millennia trapped within Tartarus have rendered Astraeus quite mad and unpredictable- he is at times grim, defeated and calm, and at others nearly manic with rage and fury.
Relationship (Eos)- The heroic "Dawnbringer" was unhappily married to Astraeus for years, and left him when he sided with the Titans. He at times appears to love and miss her dearly, and at others is accepting and defeated regarding her single status.

Total: Abilities: 82 / Skills: 50--25 / Advantages: 10 / Powers: 73 / Defenses: 12 (202)

Astraios in Mythology: Astraios is the son of Crius & Eurybia, the husband of Eos, and father to the Four Winds. As the God of the Stars, he is more a God ABOUT stuff than someone who actually does anything. His daughter Astraia became the Virgin Goddess of the constellation Virgo. He plays a weird role in the story of Eos, as many tales are told of her unquenchable lust for men, but little about what her husband thought of this. This might have something to do with his role in the Titanomachy- he is listed as having fought on the side of the Titans.

-Astraeus is the God of Stars & Constellations, and was betrothed to Eos before the Titan War that split the Gods (he is the father of her many children- Astraea, The Four Winds, Hesperus & Phosphorus). She allied with the Olympians, and he with the Titans- this more or less caused their divorce, especially as his side failed, and he was imprisoned within Tartarus for centuries. He was only released millennia later, due to the machinations of Eris, who wished to punish Eos in her superhero identity as "Dawnbringer" by intruding upon her life with a controlling husband. The reunion was largely-unhappy- Eos was in love with a mortal man, and Astraeus was a grim, humorless man (living for centuries within a literal Hell does little for someone's personality).

-Their marriage soon faltered, as Eos pleaded for divorce, and Astraeus refusing by divine right (divorce was generally not easy for Gods). Only after much time, effort (including beseeching Themis, Goddess of Divine Law) and her proof that he was still evil, were the two legally separated by Justitia and the other Law Gods. Astraeus appears as a combination of enraged and defeated over this, as his time in Tartarus has left him rather mad- his personality appears to shift rapidly, and at some times he obessively tries to win back his ex-wife. At other points, he is an uneasy ally of the Olympians.

Jab's Notes: I kept reading this guy as the same one as Apollo's son Aristaios thanks to their similar names in Greek writing- thank god I cleared that up. He appears in almost no myths, yet is frequently referred to as the father of Eos's many children, so he has to be used. PLUS, I made Eos a major character, so he's gotta be around. I decided to go with an "Unhappy Ex-Husband" thing, using the side-references to him siding with this parents in the Titanomachy to make him an ancient enemy. He's not overly powerful or that "deep", but I wanted to show him as that kind of annoying Backgrounder who could do whatever- almost like various writers kept dealing with him and going "Back To Basics" by having him try to win back his wife, then a later writer coming along and explaining all that away, Namor-style, as mental instability.

Total: Abilities: 76 / Skills: 24--12 / Advantages: 8 / Powers: 81 / Defenses: 12 (189)

The Four Winds in Mythology: The "Anemoi" are the manifestations of the winds from the four cardinal directions, and are minor Gods- the children of Eos and Astraeus, the Dawn and Astronomy. Sometimes they are depicted as horses, such as in "The Odyssey", and many towns appear to have had their own names for Wind Gods, meaning you could name up to twenty "Minor Wind Gods", many of whom are just copies of the main four.

-The Four Winds are four minor deities birthed by Eos. Their mother being a free spirit and inadequate as a mother, they grew up infamously wild and dangerous, but were used by the Olympians as both warriors and representatives to mortals, who greatly feared the weather they were said to create. Despite a relatively high amount of power, they were not very famous figures, only appearing in a handful of stories that survived throughout the ages- most mortals can't even agree on their names.

BOREAS- PL 10 (220): All Area Effects +1, Area Coverage +1, Environment Adds Cold 2, All-Out Attack [31]

Boreas in Mythology: Boreas is the North Wind- the bringer of cold winter air. He is seen as very strong, with a violent temper to match, and is often depicted as a shaggy-haired old man. Two of his sons were on the Argo, and a daughter, Chione, is said to be the Goddess of Snow.

-Boreas is the North Wind, and incredibly powerful and feared as a bringer of cold air. Despite his aggressive reputation, he has proven his worth many times, such as a brief stint on a human superhero team, though he initially joined out of arrogance, hoping to "show up" proud Athena by proving his skill after he and his fellow Winds were derided as being "Minor Gods" by the Goddess, in a lecture to Eos. He attempted a dalliance with a teammate and superheroine, but his repeated outbursts finally drove the couple apart, and he abandoned Earth for years.

ZEPHYRUS- PL 9 (189):

Zephyrus in Mythology: Zephyrus is the West Wind- the bringer of light spring and early summer breezes. His wife is Iris, Goddess of the Rainbow, in some stories, but he's also said to have had other wives. The most famous myth featuring him is the story of Hyacinthus- Zephyrus grew mad with jealousy when Apollo struck up a relationship (translation: buttsecks) with the handsome male youth, and thus slew Hyacinthus by sending a discus into his head with his winds. Eros protected Zephyrus from Apollo's wrath, with the cost being that Zephyrus had to work for Eros from then on (he aids Eros in his attempts to woo Psyche). He was called Favonius in Rome.

-Zephyrus is madly jealous and lustful, and the most famous of his siblings thanks to his role in the death of Hyacinthus- his subservience to Eros has lasted for thousands of years, but Zephyrus knows what the wrath of Apollo is like, and so grits his teeth and works for the son of Aphrodite. Hera knows of his situation, and thus schemes to win him over to her side with other thoughts of protection- though he lacks the raw might of other Olympians, "every little bit helps", and splitting the Four Winds could reap several advantages to the Queen of the Gods.

NOTOS- PL 9 (189):

Notos in Mythology: Notos is the South Wind- the bringer of storms. In Latin, he was called Auster. Nothing really exists about him.

-Notos is said to bring storms, but is mostly just a "Yes-Man" to other Gods, especially Zeus (the true "Bringer of Storms"). His loyalty and hero-worship of the King of the Gods is often noted, joked about, and worried about, as he would not hesitate to lash out at any God being disloyal to Zeus.

EURUS- PL 9 (189):

Eurus in Mythology: Eurus is the Southeast/East Wind- and seems to complete the others, but it isn't mentioned what weather he brings. He is sometimes mixed with Apeliotes, another God (the East Wind).

-Eurus is the least-known of the Four Winds, and is generally known to the others as a slack-ass and a partier when he isn't sent out to fight. What most don't know, however, is that he appears to be stricken with a profound case of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and self-medicates with very potent drugs in order to function.

Jab's Notes: Yeah, there's a surprising lack of information out there about these guys. Ultimately, they come off as minor "Nothing Gods" that were invented just to explain away certain things, or fill space. So I tried to give each of them a personality trait- Notos is the boring one (but ultra-loyal to Zeus), Eurus is a shattered person (in a world where anyone would see his mental illness as a "weakness", unbecoming of a God), Zephyrus is madly-jealous and chafes under the leadership of another, and brutish Boreas was actually a superhero for a short time- I like to throw a few random names into the superhero mix.

Complications:
Responsibility (The Seas)- Poseidon rules the Seas of each of the worlds under the control of the Olympians, which is quite a lot of space. Some worlds are more trouble than others, and some have large undersea populations.
Responsibility (Olympian Pride)- Poseidon, as one of the three head Olympians, commands great respect, and will not take insults lightly. He is known for extreme over-reactions, and just LOVES to send monsters against people who piss him off.
Responsiblity (The Bad Cop)- Easily-angered and extremely vengeful, Poseidon is highly-feared by mortals in his domains. The Olympians count on him to put the fear of Gods into the populace, so that they all don't have to look bad.
Rivalry (Athena)- Poseidon has a strong dislike of his neice, who defeated him for the role of "Patron God" of numerous cities across the cosmos.
Relationship (Amphitrite)- Poseidon and his Queen are well-suited to each other- both are power-hungry and prideful, and neither mind his cheating!

Poseidon in Mythology: Poseidon is one of the biggest Greek Gods in existence- the God of the Seas. The chief God of Pylos & Thebes, he was the brother of Zeus & Hades, and took control of one-third of existence- the waterways of the world. Sea Gods were pretty common in ancient cultures, as maritime travel and warfare were pretty important to life (Poseidon may have been a horse or war-themed God who absorbed the domains of older Gods like Proteus & Nereus). Personality-wise, he appears so similar to Zeus that there's a struggle to truly define either man separately- they're both powerful, aggressive, temperamental man-whores who chase everything with two legs and deliver horrible wrath upon transgressors. Both alternate in the role of "patrilineal descendants" of the various Greek city-states, with many of them claiming Poseidon or Zeus as an ancestor, as they father one of the many Greek Heroes with mortal women, and then go on to found cities.

-Poseidon's primary "story" in mythology was "The Odyssey", in which he punishes Odysseus for blinding his son (a Cyclops) by sending his ship adrift at sea, dooming him to a ten-year journey home. He's the fabled creator of the horse (in order to woo his sister, Demeter), creates Earthquakes with his trident, and feuds with Athena after she defeated him in a contest to see who would become the patron God of what would become Athens.

-Poseidon is one of the mightiest Olympian Gods, famous as the King of the Seas. He was one of the children of Kronus, absorbed by their father and trapped for years, before being sprung by his youngest brother Zeus. The three son of Kronus "split" the Universe evenly between them as they each gained powerful weaponry, with Zeus claiming rulership by virtue of his rescuing of the others, Hades the vastly-important Underworld, and Poseidon all waterways. Thus, an undersea palace was built in every world the Olympians conquered, with Poseidon sitting at the throne and commanding whichever aquatic beings there were within. He prefers to live on Underwater Worlds where civilization is primarily beneath the seas, but otherwise is not choosy.

-Poseidon, like his brother Zeus, craved power and respect, but appeared happy with his lot, as the seas were much more peaceful and serene than the complicated warfare that plagued the upper world. Among the few instances of power-grabbing from him were his constant attempts at becoming the "Chief God" of many population centers. When Athena proved his superior in this respect ("Athens" became a large city on many worlds under Olympian control), he grew bitter and resentful of her, starting a feud that continues till this day. Poseidon married the Oceanid Amphritrite very early into his reign, making her his immortal Queen, but like Zeus, never made any efforts at being monogamous. Ultimately, he may have surpassed Zeus himself in the number of lovers! Luckily for him, Amphitrite was never as vengeful over this as Zeus's wife Hera was.

-Poseidon is the father of numerous Greek heroes, particularly Theseus (slayer of the Minotaur) and Bellerophon (slayer of the Medusa)- his only divine son of any importance is Triton, who acts as a war-leader and lieutenant. Poseidon uses Triton as an agent in the world, especially against Athena, whom he's always disliked for her imperious nature, her effect on Zeus (who takes her advice over Poseidon's), and her ability to curry more favor with the mortals than a mightier God like himself. He seduced the mortal Medusa in Athena's own temple in a deliberate attempt to goad the Goddess of Wisdom, and got away scot-free, since Medusa took the brunt of Athena's rage (as Poseidon is largely untouchable- only Zeus has the authority to punish him).

-While he did not chafe under Zeus's rule overly much, he demanded favor with mortals, and did not brook insults lightly- the slightest offense would often cause a sea monster to assault civilization (or the time he cast Odysseus adrift for ten years because Odysseus defended himself against a murderous Cyclopean son of the God's). Poseidon was respected and feared to ancient people under the Olympians's control- his fellows considered him an ideal "Bad Cop" of sorts- an "angry one" to prevent mortals from getting too uppity- too MUCH cruelty, and the Gods would be hated rather than revered; but with Poseidon, they had an adequate excecutioner, without the entire Pantheon looking bad.

-The diminishing of the Olympian Empire chafes Poseidon greatly, as he lost access to numerous worlds, and various pantheons and alien races find his continued existence anywhere troublesome, particularly on highly-aquatic worlds. As Zeus grew more and more distant from the halls of power, Poseidon began to consider stepping in and taking control- he had the experience, the resume, and the might- and with Hera's growing influence, a potential ally.

-Poseidon is a staggering threat to anyone on Earth- his might is such that Athena, Mega-Woman and Meteor Hammer, among the greatest of Earth's heroes, would barely stand a chance against him. His Trident can create Earthquakes anywhere he can see, and he is the preeminent Elementalist in the cosmos, reaching a power beyond most mortal sorcerers (who would rarely attempt spells on this scale, lest the magical energies tear their bodies asunder).

Jab's Notes: With Poseidon, I wanted a fearsome, powerful and arrogant God demanding of respect- more or less how a lot of people see Zeus, but a little bit more villainous. He's a bit "Zeus Lite" at times, but he's vicious and frightful in a way that Zeus can't really be and still maintain his authority as anything other than a despot. So basically he's a King of Jerks, and not one to be messed with. He'd rarely attack superheroes directly, but his actions (largely through his agent, Triton) can cause some damage.

Capers:
* Poseidon discovers Athena's operating as the leader of the Legion of Light- to amuse himself, he has Triton pay off numerous Earth super-villains into forming a small army in order to take the Legion on.
* An alien race fails to give the Lord of the Seas his due, and Poseidon sends a monster to attack their civilization. Space-based heroes are thus called to action to defend the people, or satisfy Poseidon.
* Poseidon and Hera begin making their moves against rival alien races, threatening to re-create the Olympian Empire in its old form. Other planets threaten war and censure, and galactic peace is threatened.
