Welcome to Freedom City: Issue #1 Peril at Pyramid Plaza

Post by Hero4hire »

It is that Time of Year again True Believers! The 23rd Annual FREEDOMCON! Where Thousands of Nerds, Fanboys & Girls, Cosplayers and all other sorts gather together to celebrate all things Geeky!
Image
Hailed as the largest Sci-fi and Gaming Convention on the East Coast FREEDOMCON is being held at the largest structure in Freedom City; Pyramid Plaza!
Image

So grab your lightsaber, put on your capes & cowls and beam over to Pyramid Plaza for the Biggest Thing in Fandom in this Dimension!

OOC:
Alrighty, folks. You all find yourselves attending FreedomCon 23. Think fictionalized San Deigo Comic-con but in Freedom City. There are new Video Games, Toys, Comics, Movies etc all debuting. As well as Horror Movie Marathons, Trivia and Cosplay contests and other activities.
The various "Genres" and interests have been grouped together in this massive place like slices of a pie. Each "wedge" is a devoted area to a Fandom and "bleed-over" where areas meet. No hard and firm map to this but there isn't a Aliens booth right next to the latest Assassin's Creed game.
So intro your characters wandering the Con and why they are there. Dragged by a friend? Working? Just a Fan? As discussed before Imp and Battalion can know each other. I would like no more than two people however to a certain "area" for my own devious reasons.

Sara had the look of a kid in a candy shop, she may like thrills but these were her roots. Many of the books she read were either science fiction, fantasy, or superhero based, and she had read her share of graphic novels over the years. It was a good way to unwind after a fun day, well fun for her anyways. Dragging Cameron along, she couldn't believe the panel on the new Freedom League movie was in just 30 minutes, they had to get good seats. "Come on, this will be fun. I know you can't see all this, i really wish you could, but they have started making Braille books for many of the good ones. I'll describe things to you and you can image what they look like, just like reading a book. It will be fun, I promise."

OOC: Will edit if you don't like Cameron being dragged along by her.

Cameron smiled awkwardly as Sara grabbed his arm enthusiastically pulling him towards the Freedom League panel, "Relax," he chided his friend, "we'll be able to get priority seating. After all the Freedomcon prides itself on their accessibility standards." He'd been eleven when he lost his sight, which means he'd seen Phantom Menace. He sighed, almost wistfully, remembering how he'd pestered his parents until they finally relented.

Thankfully this whole con was square in Sara's wheelhouse, hell, she'd hardly laughed when he proposed dressing up as Maul. A pair of thick soled boots, flowing black hakima from a martial arts supply store, a fitted tee under a black gi jacket, and a heavy cloak with a deep hood. Sara had helped him with the face paint, of course, but she assured him that he looked spot on. He tapped through the crowd with his saber staff, and couldn't help but imagine himself drawing some odd looks.

"Braille is a little," he paused, "dense to try to pack visual information into." He shrugged, "They do make audio books though, pfff, paper comics. Get with the times Sara." She noted a smile through his snark as they began to filter into the conference room that held the panel. The echoes of the main hall had faded, and he slowly maneuvered towards a seat near the front of the stage.

"Excuse me! Pardon! Official convention business!"

Genevieve carried a heavy speaker through a hallway filled with people in costumes she didn't recognize. Probably "superheroes." She had to move slowly, not because of the speaker's weight, but because it was so big she had to look around it to make sure she didn't crash into anybody. It would have been easier to just hold it over her head, but people were already staring at her.

"Thanks, that's the last speaker," another worker said as Genevieve carried it into a panel room. "Uh, are you okay? Aren't those, like... heavy?"

"Oh yes, very," Genevieve said. She set it down with a thud and made a show of catching her breath. "You should not try to carry zem on your own. But I do ze Pilates, you know? And ze Crossfit. Very effective."

She left the room before the audio worker could ask any more questions. "Panel in twenty minutes!" she called to the people waiting in line. "Please remembair to keep your badges clearly visible!"

The premiere of Werewolf had been disappointing. He had been too young to see the original version in the theatre as a child. His mother had spoke of how much grandfather had enjoyed it. He had watched it privately at a theatre in Cairo of course. This version, with Russell Crowe was weak, watered down by its color and special effects ... and not the reason he was here.

Half way across the world, three days ago, Abdul had felt a pull. A pull he hadn't felt in fifty years, when the Amulet had first called him back to Egypt as a young man. Only this time it wasn't the Amulet. As always it was with him. His birthright, whether he wanted it or not. No, this time the pull was different. To this place ... Freedom City. More importantly Pyramid Plaza. He just wasn't sure why ... yet.

. . . this way.

HP: 1 Cond: Nerding Out

Ah, the fabled Con. An oasis for nerds and geeks of all creeds and colors to show up and feel right at home. That FreedomCon was so close by and actually in the same city as Lincoln was a big plus. It wasn't like when he'd had to travel to Emerald City of San Diego or Indianapolis. It was right here, so close to home, and he didn't need to pay any money for transit or housing. Or rather, he usually didn't pay for transit anyways (Lincoln could break the sound barrier thrice over if he pushed himself flying) but was more than happy to have a short commute from his small home to partake in the benefits of the Con.

And maybe pass around his resume while at the same time as picking up swag. Sure he was still doing his masters, but if Lincoln had to be honest, it'd be nice to get a part time job so he could make things easier on his parents and not have to beg his cousins for a job at the Nucleus.

To do so, Lincoln had avoided most of the crowded panels on account of them being packed to the brim. Though the discussion on hacking in modern gaming had been fascinating, if a little trite given that people had been cheating at games for centuries, and video games weren't the only place cheaters thrived.

Instead, he wandered about a few of the video game demos, and picked up a bunch of electronic gadgets and doodads that were being handed out as souvenirs and advertising, as well as buying a few of the cheaper goods that he knew could be hacked and amplified to fit his computing needs. Of course, he couldn't bring himself to enter the trivia contests (no matter how much he wanted to) because cheating would only be too easy by reading the questioners minds. That and the few friends of his that he had wanted to tour the halls today with wouldn't show until after their classes were done late in the day.

So Lincoln just meandered about, sampling wares, picking up comics, talking with some other fans, and snapping pictures with his phone as he caught cosplayers walking about.

Oh, and getting caught on camera himself given he was hilariously dressed as his Uncle Mentac. Lincoln thought that was hilarious, because the family resemblance made it all the more convincing.

Why would a massive tower of hulking musculature who regularly plays for his college football team be present at this location? Well he was asking himself that too. It turns out that a lot of people who make it into college and frequent parties and the like are massive nerds who did all their homework, aced all their tests, and watched a whole lot of anime and played an unconscionable amount of video games. As a guy whose hands were roughly two or three times as large as any given mainstream controller, and the attention span necessary to complete maybe a season of any mainstream anime, and forget about reading comics, he certainly had no real reason to be here. Other than 'because someone who he was chummy with had asked him to come along and see what it was about', that is. And so here he was, discovering what it was like to be an introvert at a frat party, standing in the corner near a Star Trek booth he got left behind at and avoiding eye contact with anyone, waiting for his buddy to tell him that it was okay to go home.

As the crowd and the heroes mill about, everything suddenly goes black! There are screams of surprise and a general murmur of panic that grows in the darkness. One-by-one every monitor and television screen flickers back to life, until finally the four giant monitors that hang from the ceiling, each the size of a movie screen, flare to life with a bright, blinding light. A face appears on all of the screens, a boyish looking male of Asian descent wearing goggles an impish grin.

"Greetings Geeks, Gamers, and Grognards! I am DOC OTAKU! They say this is the best Con EVAR! But I find it BOOOOORING!!! That is why I have decided form a group of Superstars to Spice things up a bit! Let me introduce to you my CONfederation!"
"TOY BOY!" the area dedicated to Toys lights up. Image

"PLAYER 2" the video gamer section lights up.
Image

"..and finally Madame Macabre!" the area where the Horror Movie Marathons lights up."
Image

"If any of you Superhero Scrubs are in the audience...If you aren't chunky salsa after my CONfederates are done with you...come try to find me. IF YOU DARE!"

OOC: Pick your dance partners folks. No more than two heroes to an area/villain to start. You may discuss it in OOC thread. You may post reactions but it isn't initiative yet.

Genevieve is sitting outside the dealers room, checking convention badges, when the lights go out. She winces as she thinks of all the merchandise that could be stolen in the dark, and how unlucky she is to be working at the con while this is happening. Then the screens start to light up, and it takes her a little while to realize that the boy in the goggles is one of Freedom City's supercriminals.

Uh-oh. She knows right away that this could go very badly. There's a huge crowd packed into a small space here, and if somebody starts attacking people, or just causes a panic...

Genevieve walks inside and raises her voice. "This way, everyone!" she says confidently, beckoning people toward the exit. "Nothing to worry about! Everything is under control!"

Abdul quietly watches as he gently move through the crowd. Americans ... must they all have their fifteen minutes of fame? Blindly challenging a crowd of innocent mundanes? It makes little sense. What is to be gained by this? Abdul had read of this child prodigy, Doctor Otaku, on the flight from Paris. It had been two decades since Abdul had been in the United States. He had only begun to relearn of the "uniqueness" of his father's home, Freedom City.

As the young doctor droned on with his challenges, Abdul slid behind a set of empty partitions normally reserved for the cosplayers. A thought intruded upon his musings, that maybe this woman was here searching for the same thing that had drawn the Skarab. It has been 15 years since he had publicly taken on the role of the Scarab. The American military had not appreciated his interfering when they rolled through an innocent village in search of their enemy. He was not sure how he would be received today, but the sense of dread that he felt always foretold of danger. Sehkmet warned him to be most cautious with this Madame Macabre.

Touching his chest seemingly in prayer as he felt the Scarab Amulet beneath his business attire. The Veil was silently lifted and finally the Skarab once again walked in the world.

"Nice!"

He smiled and stumbled for a moment under the weight of the swag bag. Fumbling his hand inside he found the textured kevlar of his body suit coupled with the smooth cool visor of the daka lens that allowed him to regulate the Terminus energies his body could bleed off. A smile flickered across his lips behind his Darth Maul half mask, it was odd, sort of. His cosplay allowed him a sort of anonymity that his civilian identity didn't. Nobody would recognize him and be able to identify him as Cameron Chase, instead, at worst it would be 'Hey, Battalion was at the Con cosplaying as Darth Maul,' of course he may get slagged for enjoying the prequels, but hey, he was what, five when it was released, seven when he say it on a DVD?

He moved slowly, to a VR Booth as the crowd around it thinned, he stepped behind the curtain and began to change, as quickly as he could. Once he had his visor connected a flash flowed through him, translating physical proximity into visual data through the neural connections. It was disorienting at first, but he compensated, and his Darth Maul outfit fell to the floor of the curtained booth. He silently cursed as he realized he had no connection to inform AEGIS of the situation, an upgrade for the R&D boys later, to be sure.

He stepped out and sprinted to a place beside Imp, "We're going to need to thin the crowd some before engaging, or take him outside with minimal risk to the crowd," he scanned the area looking for anything that would help them in the upcoming confrontation, "Thoughts?"

Lincoln had groaned when the lights went out - either some idiot tripped the circuit breaker, or they were trying to do some kind of 'event'... So he was a little unsure of whether to take this seriously when it turned out to be the latter.

Well, until he realized that no one was actually pretending right now, and that there were actual villains loose during FreedomCon, and they certainly weren't here to get any autographs signed.

Oh, come on, Doc... not cool," Lincoln groaned as he darted out of the way of the crowd that was quickly starting to freak out. Not good, given how packed these conventions were. With a telekinetic-assist, he stashed his swag and shed the outer coat that he was using for more substantial pockets. Once done, he fumbled with the belt of the fake-morphic molecular suit (the non-functional variations used as generic wear for workers at the Nucleus that he'd borrowed for his costume). With a few presses, the silver belt ejected a dark mask in the classic style that LIncoln quickly wore to conceal his identity. Too bad he didn't have the room to add a cape, but hey, you couldn't win them all.

Looking around, he focused slightly as he hoevered and started levitating over to the Toys section he was closest to. "Man, try to kick back for a day, and supervillains show up at the Con. Can't a guy geek out in peace?" Caelus quipped mostly to himself as he looked for whatever menaces the dimunitive inventor had brought to the convention floor.

TOY SECTION

As Genevieve helps usher people out and Lincoln telekinetically suits up TOY BOY cackles gleefully as dozens of action figures of various sizes, toy planes and cars and other sundry playthings come to life. They begin to harass and torment the crowd. They do not appear to be damaging anyone by crawling all over them of pulling their hair, but the sheer amount of panic itself seems to be a weapon. The throng knock over tables and each-other as the diminutive villain dances with glee.
Among the "relatively harmless" toys Both Caelus and Peacekeeper spot a couple of "Special Edition" action figures. 7 core members of the Freedom League lovingly detailed in 6 inches of plastic are also flying around adding to the mayhem. Each one seems to be complete with super-powers and the ability to fly!

OOC: I am going to swap Manhatten out for Bowman...if only so I can shoot tiny little arrows at people!

GAMES SECTION

PLAYER 2 scratches his chin from his perch atop some scaffolding overlooking the game-floor. "This place needs a makeover! Decisions, decisions...Oh! I know!" He gestures with his hi-tech half-staff and the area begins to transform into blocky hard-light hallways. Complete with blocky hard-light inhabitants!
