The Catsiverse: Heroes Unlimited setting

Post by catsi563 »

The Catsiverse is a wide and varied setting featuring everything from fantasy, to sci-fi, to horror, to Action to romance. It covers the vast breath and depth of the universe and realms both divine and infernal. Its the culmination of my many years of roleplaying experience as a player and a storyteller, and ti all started the day I player with a friends Dungeons and Dragons figures at lunch one day.

This thread will focus specifically on my Heroes Unlimited campaign and the resultant world and heroes and villains within. Questions and Commentary are always welcome and appreciated.

Many thanks go out to Crinos, and Charles Phipps whose own Ginormous settings had a big influence over many of the things seen here. Also other wonderful people who will be named as I come across them.

The Secret of the Preservers
The Ancient civilization known as the Preservers are known across the Galaxy under countless names: the Seeders, the Ancients, the Precursors, the Eternals, etc.

On Earth, they are known by yet another name: The Angels.

No, really.

Born with the Big Bang, the beings calling themselves "Celestials" first spread across the newly born universe, and immediately came into conflict with those entities now called "Entropic Masters" (though they are alternatively known as Daemons, Abyssals, Qlippoth, or Anarchs or if you will The Ancient Old Ones), beings of born out of the original chaos. The two primordial races, one embodying Order and Creation, and the other Chaos and Destruction, could never coexist peacefully. Their war raged across the universe for millennia; Celestial Star-Forges were used to create fleets of starships, pitting them into battle against Daemon Battle Worldships, both sides using weapons that consumed entire solar-systems to produce massive energy beams... the term "Epic" doesn't even begin to describe it.

In the end, the Celestials won the war, by "cheating". They rewrote the laws of physics, banishing the surviving Entropic Masters from the physical universe, trapping them in the dimensional void known as the Abyss. After a few more thousands of years cleaning up the remnants of the armies and weapons used by the Daemons, the Celestials began bringing Order back to the universe, or the "Symphony" as they referred to it.

They did so by travelling the galaxies, visiting worlds devoid of intelligent life, leaving behind the potential for sapience and the development of powers shaped by environmental stress behind them. On worlds that bore intelligent life, they visited the primitive life-forms and guided them, teaching them the ways of civilization before leaving them to develop on their own. This led to the rise of the First ones, the earliest sapient speices in the galaxy including the Grigori, the Guardians of OA, and the Eldar, and the Saurians of Lustria.

The Celestials visited Earth a few times: the first time was during the Cretaceous, where they discovered a decadent serpent-people empire they considered beyond help. They instead chose to make some alterations to the environment and left. Half a million years later, they returned and saw potential in a developing hominid species, and proceeded to experiment on it, seeding the species with an active version of the meta-gene. They then took samples to seed other worlds with humanoid life.

It was around this time that a schism developed amongst the Celestials; while most favored a policy of limited interference, one faction, lead by the Archangel Lucifer, argued that the celestials should rule the Symphony, by force if necessary. The others rejected Lucifer's offer, and the celestials went to war again, against one another this time. The Celestial War ended after a few centuries, with Lucifer's Rebels being cast into the Abyss. Renaming themselves Devils, or as they became known The Fallen , they fended off daemonic attacks to build a new home for themselves on the abyssal world of Baator, where they founded the Empire of Nine Hells.

Meanwhile, the remaining Celestials looked on to the devastation their war had caused, and decided to withdraw from the physical universe to prevent such destruction, ascending to a higher plane of existence. Leaving behind a race they had uplifted to near-perfection, the Grigori, to continue their works in the physical universe, the Celestials resolved to limit their interference to astral realms.

Unfortunately, they found themselves forced to interfere with the physical universe again, after Lilith (a rogue creation of the celestials' ill-fated "Eden Project") discovered how to summon Lucifer to Earth, granting Lucifer and his devils a path back into the physical universe. With the devils not yet ready to battle the celestials directly again, and the celestials not inclined to start another highly destructive war, both factions chose to act more subtly. Operating through dreams, visions and the occasional physical vessel, the devils and the angels (as they renamed themselves to dissociate themselves from their fallen brethren) began manipulating civilizations, guiding them toward their personal ideals, countering the interference of their rivals, and on occasion inspiring them to wage war on "corrupted" societies.

The angels and devils are currently locked in a stalemate, both sides having strong influences on many galactic civilizations, and outright controlling a few. Earth is one of the few worlds where neither side has managed to win a decisive victory.

Where one might expect the angels and devils (and the daemons) to use magic exclusively, those beings are in fact so advanced, that their tools and methods combine magic, technology and pure cosmic power to a level that no civilization has yet advanced to.

Ripped this whole sale from Romwolf on the old forums because this was just PLAIN AWESOME.

and heres where it all began.

The Catsiverse is a vast and I mean VAST multiverse spreading across all realms and potentialities.

But primarily it is made up of a few very specific realms of import the Three as theyre known the Corporeal, the Ethereal, the Celestial, The High realms, the Low realms, and the Mid realms. Also known as the Hogard, Udtgard, and Midgard respectively.

The higher planes are the realms of thought, imagination, spirit and more much much more. They include -Yetzirah, AKA the World of Formation. The Astral Plane. The Astral Plane is for all intents the mayonnaise in between the slices of bread that make up the sandwich of the universe. Its layered over the three prime planes nice and thick. Its a shadow of the corporeal world existing entirely in the Ethereal. The Astral has not quite but almost two layers. Its "outer" layer closely matches it, albeit in somewhat exaggerated forms. As one moves "deeper" within Yetzirah, however, the ghostly shadow of the world fades away to the Inner Astral, a realm of misty nothingness and ever-shifting colors, dotted with islands of solidity within a sea of chaos. These islands are usually the dominion of powerful astral entities capable of manipulating the ectoplasmic fabric of the Astral Realm.

Part of the Ethereal also are the countless Dreamworlds, scattered throughout Yetzirah, each the creation of a sentient, material creature. (Cabalistic rumor hints that some very powerful entities within Briah also dream. This has yet to be verified.) Each such Dreamworld is like a personal astral dimension, mostly subconsciously built through life experiences, memories and beliefs, though a few rare lucid dreamers can actively shape them. Outsiders can only access dreamworlds while the dreamer sleeps; doing so grants the intruder a new body within the dreamworld, though he or she then becomes subject to that dreamworld's particular rules. These are also known among many as " The Marchs" and they are part of the borders between the upper and lower.

Another Astral realm of note is Faerie, the domain of a specific race of ultraterrestrials, the fae, who have interacted with Assiah repeatedly and openly for about three millennia. Of all the various astral realms, Faerie is the only one to maintain repeated connections with Assiah, often in flagrant violation of the Ban.

At the deepest, inmost edge of Yetzirah swirls an ocean mighty enough to hold whole worlds. Which it does. This is the Pearl-Bright Ocean, the Archetypical Ocean of the Unconscious, connected to all oceans. It contains such features as Davy Jones' Locker (realm of the pirate dead), Guinée, the realm of the Voudun Rada Loas, the astral version of Atlantis (ruled by a spiritual version of King Minos), and the mirror-moon captured beneath the Lake of Nemi in Italy.

All of these Ethereal world make up the collective world known as The Imageria, a vast world of pure thought potential where every thing that was ever imagined or dreamed exists, and where quite a few things not yet imagined may well come to be.

One part of the Ethereal planes that is special is the Shadowlands, AKA the land of the dead. If the Astral planes are the Mayo then the lands of the dead are the mustard mixed into it. think of the corporeal world as covered in the astral like a layer of protective bubble wrap, in between that plastic wrap, is layer of ectoplasmic goo known as the shadowlands. the Shadowlands have been around ever since it was decided that all things should change in some fashion, that everything should ""end"" in some way. The shadowlands were part of the path that was laid down to provide a passage way to the higher or lower realms. Here is where the ancient cities of the dead, and many of the realms of the dead have anchors or doorways to their own realms.

It should be noted that the realm of the dead is linked to pearl ocean itself but in a slightly darker way, in the lands of the dead the ocean is bordered by the great maelstrom, a powerful whirlpool that draws souls into it to be lost forever. Still it is possible to bypass those storms and whirlpools by virtue of the Ferrymen, servants of the Archangel of Death Azrael.

The upper or Celestial planes exist near all this On the other side of the Pearl-Bright Ocean from Yetzirah is Briah, the Iconic Realm, the realm of Forms. It is a realm of Iconic imagery and pure symbolism, and the domain of Icons and powerful deities. Mount Olympus and the Nine Realms of the Aesir, Heleopolis, and many others can be found here, as are more obscure domains, such as the Bright City of Hestavar, or the Red Prison of Carceri. This is the where the path through the shadowlands leads most often with others either falling from the path to the hells, or being recycled back into the cycle of reincarnation.

On the inmost edge of Briah, overlooking a massive, bottomless chasm, looms the Heavenly City, domain of the Angels and their Archangel lords. Though it is called the Heavenly "City", it is in fact a vast realm in it's own right, where each Archangel has his or her own keep. Heaven serves mainly as a bastion, existing to keep watch over the Abyss and it's denizens, and to guard the boarder leading to Atziluth.

Beyond Heaven, beyond the Abyss itself, lies the Spiritual Realm of Atziluth. Therein lies The Hidden light, First Source, the Prime Mover, the First Being, The Presense, The one above all. In short, God.

Below all this in the great Abyss itself lie the lower realms part of the Celestial these include the Empire of the Nine hells known as Baatzu conquered in ages past by the Fallen. The devils war ceaselessly among themselves, and with the incursions of the Demon Folks as the Darkness beyond time gives birth to the Entropic lords.

And lastly but certainly not least is the Corporeal realms the Midgard -Assiah, the World of Actions. Our Material Universe. This is more then just the world of dirt and rocks, but also the energies of sunlight, plate tectonics and cosmic rays, and even slightly more intangibles such as raw physical passion or primal fear. If it can be experienced by "normal" human animals, then it's an aspect of Assiah.

All of these realms are linked by branches of probability and motion and time and space knowns as Yggdrasil the worlds tree, the Tree itself is a being as old as the universe and with roots that run deep as time itself. Yggdrasil rarely speaks with anyone save the Hidden Light itself but when it does act it does so with world shaking often multiversal shaking consequences.

The Darkness Beyond Time - Before there was life, before there was space, before there was time, before there was light, there was the Darkness. It was the first of all things. It was unstoppable and all consuming until it was banished Outside the known universe by the Celestials at the Dawn of Time via the Big Bang. This universe is now known as "The Void", and from the depths of this realm, the Darkness hungers, for light to consume, especially the "light" of living souls.

The Darkness is one of the true, ultimate sources of Evil in the cosmos. The ancient Old ones sleep in its embrace dreaming their ancient dreams of madness, It spawned the Entropic Masters, which fear it like nothing else. It fuels the existence of undead creatures, especially life-drainers like vampires. It allows Necromancers to call upon it's energies to work dark, destructive magics, and is responsible for the corruption of so many of them. It empowers villains like Nacht-Krieger and Takofanes the Undying.

It occasionally creates Avatars of itself, varying in shape and abilities, but all of a similar shadowy nature, and all driven toward the final goal of unleashing the Darkness upon all reality. (For those, use the "Elder Evil" template from Book of Magic).

It cannot be negotiated with. It cannot be reasoned with. It simply is, and it's reach extends out into all darkness, all shadows, it is there, and it Hungers.

Think about that next time you turn out the lights.

The First ones.

They go by many names but the one that most accurately describes them is The First ones because they are precisely that. The very first Mortal beings to gain sentience. Ancient, sometimes inscrutable, and always thinking in the Long term, in millennia. Their technology and science is beyond nearly anything even dreamed of by the younger races, they saw the birth of stars, the expansion and cooling of the big bang, they fought in the first wars against the Darkness, they were wiped from existence and brought themselves into being again because it was within their power to do so.

Few have ever encountered them, and fewer still have ever survived the encounter for they are not necessarily benevolent nor are they evil. They follow ancient plans laid out for them millennia eons before mankind ever crawled out of the primordial soup.

Some though do seek to guide the younger races, they reach out in unknowable ways and leave clues, sometimes they aid in building, and sometimes they use the same hand that builds to destroy what they deem not part of the great plan of the Prerservers.

To quote a great Alien philosopher ""There are things in the universe billions of years older than either of our races. They're vast, timeless, and if they're aware of us at all, it is as little more than ants, and we have as much chance of communicating with them as an ant has with us. We know, we've tried, and we've learned that we can either stay out from underfoot or be stepped on. Whatever they are, they walk among the stars, and they must walk there alone."

The Grigori: The first species to walk upright and think, they were lifted up by the Preservers as a species to as near perfection as the rules allowed given a spark of the divine and one of the few truly immortal beings in the galaxy. The first of them was named Lorien and he spoke to the Hidden Light with one word.

Hello.

It was here that Yves gave him his name, and the rest followed. The Grigori have grown fewer and fewer as the ages passed, because inspite of being naturally immortal they can be killed though it takes a great deal of effort. Still they were the first and they look fondly on the younger races doing all they can to guide them.

The Slann: nearly as old as the Grigori the Slann were uplifted by the preservers when they showed a remarkable ability to remain unaffected by the chaos of the universe, a certain cold blooded nature that let them remain consistent. The Slann were gifted with enormous power which would later be known as magic and much of their knowledge was spread to the universe at large in various ways.

The Slann uplifted a lesser race of Saurians into various forms useful to them and set about insuring the plans of the Preservers were carried out. They erected great monuments and cities all of which had the purpose of containing and directing the chaotic energies of the universe into a stable pattern known as the Weave.

They continue this work to this day.

The Vorlons: Believers in Order these beings of light have attempted to guide the younger races in their own way much as they were guided by the Grigori. In many ways they have succeeded especially with The Lor Empire, and a small green blue marble know as Earth. In some ways they have failed drastically as an attempt to help a fledgling race facing extinction on a harsh planet lead to the creation of the Genocidal race known only as the Necrons. Still they move forward as best they can asking one question over and over.

Who are you?

The Shadows: A sort of brother/sister race to the Vorlons as both came into ascendance at the same time, the Shadows believe in the evolution of races through conflict and Chaos. The shadowy beings have also had their share of successes and failures. The Race of beings known as the Orks exemplify growth through Conflict, but their failure to guide a race known as the Zerg properly nearly lead to their being wiped out when Orkus mutated a third of the Zerg race into a bio-genetic weapon known as the World Devouring Tyrannid Swarm.

Still the Shadows have many servant races Such as The Arcane, or the, Tsvong and worse. So they are far from done with this universe.

What do you want?

The Djinn: While most of the Grigori have always tried their best to be benevolent and work out disputes amicably amongst themselves they are by no means perfect beings and they do disagree. One of these disagreements though led to the very first murder and a falling of a third of the race into darkness and evil. Corrupted unknowingly by the Darkness beyond time one member of the Grigori whose name has ever been lost to time killed his brother in what he thought was a self sacrifice that would better the universe.

He was wrong, ever so wrong and it cost him his soul. Worse it doomed nearly all his people until they remedied the situation by casting them out and into the Abyss itself.

They stewed there for nearly ten millennia plotting revenge being mutated and turning savage and more wicked, until they struck openly using their advanced technology and science to bridge the gap between universes. Though they've been thrown back time and again they are as patient as their brothers and so they wait and plan. They've stuck their noses and fingers into many things and races business all with the goal of ending the great work of the Preservers.

And there are others, many others though they grow fewer and fewer as the ages pass. Many of them have begun to pass beyond the rim into the higher realms of thought and energy and potential leaving behind ancient cities and technologies centuries beyond anyones imagination guarded usually by powerful beings and constructs till the time when the worthy can become advanced enough to truly understand them.

As the same philosopher said of them. " They are a mystery and I am both terrified and relieved to know that there are still mysteries in the universe."

The Eldar

Once ruling an Empire vast as any across space, the Eldar while the youngest of the First races now reside in only a small corner of their once mighty Empire. Their own hubris lead to devestation for them when they gave birth to the Entropic lord Slannesh through a massive psychic backlash that nearly destroyed their race.

Many of their brethren fled their ancient homeworlds in Moon sized Craftworlds which would drift among the stars for millennia while facing their ancient enemies, the Entropic Masters and their Necron Armies and Tyrannid bio weapons.

However some two millennia ago The greatest of the Eldar Farseers, Eldrad Utheran working through his protégé Mithrandir of Craftworld Minas Tirth set off a ritual that had been ten thousand years in the making, a great psychic undertaking of stored energy that drew on the combined power of the craftworlds when they all came into proximity for the first and only time ever.

The massive psychic Shockwave woke the ancient Eldar god of Death Ynnead in the vain belief that the god fo the dead would be able to strike down the ancient enemy. The ritual did not work as Eldrad hoped and he would give his life in its working. However it did have a boon effect that was unseen.

Long ago Isha the mother goddess of the Eldar was trapped by Slannesh and then taken from her jaws by Nurgle Entropic master of plagues as a gift for Orkus. She languished away from her children for millennia only able to send small boons to them over the centuries.

But Ynneads birth created a massive psychic shockwave that her jailers were distracted and a strike team of Harlequins snuck into Abbadon the trapped home of the Entropic Masters and freed her in a violent running battle that cost all but one of the troupe their lives.

Still Isha was freed and with Ynnead her son at her side A great balance was brought back to the Eldar that had been lacking in their souls. The Eldar have since returned to the Exodite worlds where they begin to slowly rebuild their ancient Empire under their mother goddesses firm but gentle guidance.

What effect this will have on the rest of the universe has yet to be seen, and what role the mysterious Eldar have to play will only be seen in the fullness of time.

What do you get when 2 species of warriors, who are both highly competitive, physically powerful, and while they may play rough have a solid code of morals and honor, band together?

You get the Thissera Micean Coppoerative or the TMC. An intergalactic peace keeping force on par with the Green Lantern Corps, and the Star Knights.

The TMC actually--and somewhat ironically-- started as a drinking game between the leaders of the Thissera and Micean peoples. The two --both races and leaders-- had always had a serious, but friendly rivalry going. They also had a long history with each others peoples as allies. Both races were advanced in many ways, and well aware of the earth and other species.

while never full members of the Lor republic they were staunch allies and of it and both species had standing offers to join which they had politely refused due to their independence, having some distance from Thran and tsavong space helped mind you but the fact that a combined Thisseran Miceans fleet thrashed a Thran armada in a brutaly straight forward fashion didn't hurt either.

The two leaders Kisssna Hor of Thissera, and Rek Tan of Micea spent the better part of their peoples annual diplomatic retreat doing what diplomats do, ie being bored out of their skulls. That was until while touring a local market they happened upon an escaping murder suspect--an Shisshian (will they never learn?)-- and the two combined efforts to capture the fleeing mage.

thrilled by the effort and revitalized by the adventure the two hatched upon a daring and incredibly bold initiative. Actually they just bet one another that each could capture more criminals but that's kind of besides the point-- both were pretty drunk by then-- and within months their governments announced to a wide spread acclaim that They would form the Thissera Micean cooperative.

The TMC is a potent and powerful law enforcement organization whose numbers and power and authority are matched only by the Green Lanterns in scope. The TMCs basic modus operandi is to accept client worlds. The TMC then signs a basic though detailed contract allowing them to pursue criminals, enforce Laws both local and intergalactic, and to arrest and detain and if necessary kill criminals of all stripes. Pirates, murderers, Slavers, smugglers, thieves, and con artists all have come to know and fear the TMC and their armored officers.

They are not however Vigilantes that must be made abundantly clear. The TMC is a very honorable and Honest police force almost to a fault. They do not accept bribes and in point of fact many a corrupt politician has found himself arrested for even suggesting a bribe might happen to a TMC officer. This isn't to say they cant become corrupt mind you but they are well aware how important their reputation is and they take great pains to police themselves.

because of this honor the TMC is a highly trusted and well liked organization in the galaxy, their many client worlds having extraordinarily low crime rates. This is due in part to the TMCs strict and ironclad policy of Intensively training their recruits to the most exacting standards.

with this intense training though each TMC officer is an Elite warrior, and sometimes a warrior with super powers, especially magic and or psionics which are in high demand due to their obvious applications in crime fighting. The TMC is also incredibly technologically advanced thanks to gifts from their membership and a steady research and development program. They have powered armor, high tech weapons, and even multiple well armed and protected and very fast space ships. Many a pirate fleet has surrendered rather then be annihilated when they learned that one of the TMCs Patrol moon bases is in the area.

Initially the TMC was strictly staffed by the Thisserans and Miceans, but over the last 20 years or so they have steadily been accepting other races as trainees many of them going on to hold high positions, and becoming officers of great reputation among the TMCs member worlds.

The TMCs reputation has even reached earth when a pair of TMC operatives pursued a wanted criminal to earth. While the criminal did escape the TMC operatives did give a brief flier on the TMC and its policies to SWORD before they departed in pursuit. Thus far Earths Government hasn't considered joining the TMC as a client world but special dispensation was given to the officers and the TMC promised to contact earth authorities if they were ever in the vicinity.

It doesn't matter what the Enemy, The Atorians, the Thran, The Tsavong, the Grue, Orkus and Abbadon, The TMC stands as a bright shining line against the darkness. They are to a man and woman Courageous and forthright. While not the only Law Enforcement outfit in the galaxy they are after the Green Lantern Corps the largest and most well equipped and best organized.

There is a friendly and competitive rivalry with the Lanterns, but any rivalry is quickly put aside in the face of danger and many a Lantern has been relieved to see the sight of a TMC space cruiser headed their way, likewise many a TMC operative has felt similar relief to see the Shining light of an Emerald Guardian coming into save them. The Guardians official policy with the TMC is to consider them allies and aid them as requested. The same with the TMC who will generally concede jurisdiction --though sometimes with some good natured grumbling-- to the Corp.

The TMC also has great relations with the Lor republic and many a Lor Mentat has liaised with the TMC and many a Lor citizen has joined the organization. This naturally has lead to good relations with the Star Knights. Thanks to Mentor and the diplomatic efforts of the Republic it is only a matter of time before the republic and the TMC join forces entirely.

A prospect that has criminals and evil powers alike shaking in terror at the thought.
