I tried to get into the new Shazam take, but I just couldn't. I get the business reasons why they changed his name and the fact that most non-comic folk call him Shazam anyway. But call me an old fuddy-duddy (I hadn't used the phrase in ages...consarn it :)), I like old school Cap and his universe. I think DC has treated them horribly in the new millienium, except for Black Adam and he doesn't get as much run as he should. And with ISIS ruining the name of Isis, we'll probably never see his love again anytime soon, either.

COMPLICATIONS:
Enemy: Superman.
Obsession: Brainiac is driven to accumulate all the knowledge in the universe, then once he learns about a culture or object, he feels he must destroy it to make it more valuable.
Plot Device: Brainiac usually operates on a world-wide if not universal scale so sometimes his plans require technology or powers that can transcend his normal PL.
Vulnerable: Despite all the knowledge and power he has acquired, he still has not perfected has not figured out how to properly counter magical effects.

Abilities 88 + Skills 31 (62 ranks) + Advantages 42 + Powers 210 + Defenses 15 = 386 / 386

Build Comments: Brainiac has always been one of my favorite Superman villains and my favorite version is, no surprise, the DCAU version so that’s the route I’ve generally chosen to go with my take on him for the Thorpacoverse.

However…the clips of him from Injustice 2 are just bad ass as could be so if they change up some things with his canon from that setting, I reserve the right to change because…damn…

Injustice 2: Shattered Alliances

Drones are below as well.

Secret Origins: Brainiac was the planetary-wide supercomputer of Krypton. It sensed the imminent destruction of the planet. But rather than warn others as Jor-El did, it chose to save itself and the collected records of Krypton. In its mind, as long as the records of Krypton existed, the loss of the planet itself and all its living inhabitants was acceptable. It also knew that if word of Krypton's impending doom escaped, it would be forced to calculate a way to stop this, which Brainiac knew to be impossible and would only distract it from the more essential task of saving Krypton's records. Before Krypton exploded, Brainiac uploaded its core program and all of the collected data to an artificial satellite.

Years later, it was discovered by an alien spacecraft which Brainiac then hijacked. After Brainiac killed the crew of the ship, it began to explore the universe. Each time it came to an inhabited world, it would upload all the knowledge it could from that world then destroy it, decreasing the number of beings that have access to the knowledge made it that much more valuable and destroying the planets ensured no new information would be created. Along with raw data, it also assimilated whatever useful technology it could find, improving itself with every world it visited.

The Story so Far: Brainiac eventually made its way to Earth under the pretense of a peaceful exchange of knowledge with LexCorp. He revealed that he was another survivor of Krypton, getting the attention of Superman. But through the information from the cultures that Brainiac destroyed, Superman concluded that Brainiac would do the same to Earth and destroyed Brainiac's ship with the help of Lex Luthor.

Although Brainiac was believed to be destroyed, the data that Brainiac had downloaded into LexCorp's computers was not alien knowledge but a copy of Brainiac's programming. This copy tricked Luthor into entering the room where Brainiac was using LexCorp's automations to construct a new body. However, the automations were not advanced enough to perfectly fine-tune the body so Brainiac required Luthor. Luthor was locked in and forced to complete the body. Luthor knew that once Brainiac was done with him, he would kill him so he refused to continue when the body was in the final stages. However, the body was developed enough that Brainiac was able to enter it and finish building itself. Brainiac fired a blast at point blank range at Luthor that apparently failed to kill the CEO. Superman arrived and was able to defeat this copy by magnetizing it so that the attracted metal would completely overwhelm him. The body was taken into LexCorp's possession.

While LexCorp formed a partnership with Wayne Enterprises, another copy built a new body and was able to control Bruce Wayne through nanotechnological machines implanted in his office phone which entered his ear to infect his brain. When crime in Gotham City increased, Superman and Robin deduced that Wayne was under Brainiac's control and that it sought to use Wayne Enterprises technology to leave Earth. While it was able to launch its ship, Superman managed to destroy the ship and its passenger.

This was still not the last of Brainiac. Somehow surviving, the robotic villain succeeded in escaping into space. In his new journey throughout the cosmos, Brainiac found his way to Apokolips. His timing couldn't have been worse as Darkseid was facing a considerable military disadvantage following a feud with New Genesis. So before Brainiac could absorb his planet, Darkseid proposed a bargain that could satisfy both parties: Darkseid would capture Superman for Brainiac and Apokolips would be spared in exchange. Brainiac accepted and both forces engaged in a fake battle to convince the Justice League that they were in fact on opposite sides.
Brainiac allowed them to believe that they succeeded in deflecting his invasion and he retreated. This was, however, a tactic to lure the League into his headquarters — a giant asteroid shaped in his likeness. Inside, Brainiac renewed his offer to Superman to join him in carrying on the legacy of Krypton which the Man of Steel promptly rejected. Upon this, Brainiac summoned an army of replicas and fought the Leaguers. After Darkseid Boom Tubed inside the ship and subdued Hawkgirl and J'onn J'onzz with just a few blasts, the allied villains combined their powers to overwhelm Superman and Brainiac took him into his headquarters' central core. There, he explained to Darkseid that he had finally reached the limits of his programmed functions after years of data gathering and needed to evolve to the next level but he needed to extract living DNA from the last Kryptonian, thus becoming a true life form. But when Brainiac let his guard down during the procedure, Darkseid took the opportunity to hack into his control circuits and took over Brainiac. In spite of being self-aware, Brainiac was compelled to obey Darkseid and so he fought off the League. Batman managed to disrupt Brainiac's program, setting off a chain reaction that culminated in the obliteration of the asteroid headquarters. Both Brainiac and Darkseid were destroyed. All that was left of him was a piece of alien metal which the League took into custody and kept in stasis aboard the Watchtower.

Unknown to anyone, the blast Brainiac fired at Lex Luthor wasn't intend to kill him. Instead, it placed a nanotech copy of his program inside the billionaire's body. Since then, Brainiac had laid dormant, subtly influencing Lex's actions and protecting his body ― giving him super-strength and curing his Kryptonite induced cancer. During the chaos of the Cadmus Crisis, Brainiac's ultimate goal consisted in having Lex build him a super-powered android body based on the Amazo android and finally transferring himself into it. But after Amanda Waller destroyed the android and when the core Justice League members confronted Lex, Brainiac was forced to emerge from within Luthor's body. He engaged them and attempted to digitize their inner selves, but was foiled by J'onn J'onzz. So, Brainiac had Luthor summon a giant spaceship that kept the League occupied, allowing them to flee.

Brainiac intended to pursue the fulfillment of its program: recording information and destroying the original. However, seeing how shortsighted Brainiac was, Lex offered it a purpose beyond that of its limited programming. He proposed to combine Brainiac's vast information and resources with his own imagination. They broke into Cadmus and assimilated the Dark Heart technology into their database. This way, they could control the nano-assemblers into converting any raw material into whatever they wished. Given its failed liaison with Darkseid, Brainiac didn't fully trust Lex so they agreed to completely merge into one single being using the nanotech. Then, Brainiac/Luthor set off to build a machine that would absorb the information of the entire Earth, then the galaxy and finally reshape the universe to their will. When the Justice League stepped in, Brainiac created nanotech duplicates of himself to hold them off, but Lex decided they could do better than that and had the duplicates morph into the Justice Lords. Even though the League overpowered their android counterparts and destroyed the absorption machine, Brainiac/Luthor managed to subdue them. When 'he' decided to kill Flash due to believing it would cause events similar to that of the Justice Lords' universe, Flash managed to break free and seemingly ran away. Brainiac/Luthor then attempted to reassemble his absorption apparatus, but was attacked by the Flash tapping into the full power of the Speed Force, and physically dismantled Brainiac from Lex.

Despite his believed destruction, no one truly believes Brainiac is gone.

Characterization: Brainiac has a singular goal of gathering as much information on the universe as he can and destroying the source to increase the value and his role in the universe.

Friends and Foes: While he has allied with some “lesser” creatures from time to time, he works alone. His greatest foe is Superman.

COMPLICATIONS:
Enemy: Cyberdata.
Honor: Ripclaw is a man of honor. He holds to his code, his word and does not always look to fight to resolve conflicts.
Prejudice: Mutant.
Relationships: He has had an on-and-off relationship with Velocity and is close to rest of his Cyberforce teammates. He is also close to the Shaman that thought him about his true lineage and trained him in spirituality.

Abilities 86 + Skills 22 (44 ranks) + Advantages 13 + Powers 27 + Defenses 8 = 156 / 156

Build Comments: So Ripclaw here is from Cyberforce, an fairly successful Image comics series. Visually, he comes off as a Wolverine rip-off, and he is to a degree, but despite the physical similarities (claws, hand-to-hand master, healing factor), John is a much more spiritual being, having a strong ties to the spirit world and usually trying to talk first before he fights. I think he is one of the Iron Age’s better creations, all things considered. Then again, there's not a lot of competition for that honor.

I really liked everything I’ve read with him in it, and I am going to make him a leader in my setting. I don’t know about the rest of Cyberforce yet. They’ll get posted here eventually.

Secret Origins: Not much is known concerning Ripclaw's early past. Many people believe that he is with the Apache tribe. Although it is true that he spent much of his youth with the Apache, it is also true that he spent just as much, if not more time, with the Cheyenne. He has also lived among the Navajo and the Lakota Sioux.

He is in fact descended from a primitive woodland tribe that lived thousands of years ago in what is now the Northeastern United States. He left home after he began to develop his mutation, and injured a fellow student during a martial arts training session. Ripclaw questioned his father over his hands, and his father became evasive, and became enraged when Ripclaw pressed on with his questions, asking his father about why his skin was much paler than that of other students. He left home, seeking answers, and ended up on an American Indian reservation, where he stumbled into a fight and was knocked unconscious. He was found by a powerful shaman, who taught him about his ancestors.

They went through a ceremony where Ripclaw experienced a joining and conversing with the spirits of his ancestors and the spirits of the land, who told him that he was Robert Bearclaw, and not Robert Berresford, as his father had always told him. The spirits told him that he was to be their warrior and that he was to lead the Indian People back to the greatness of spirit that they once had. When he finished the ceremony, involving tribal flesh hooks and war paint, the shaman marked him with his blood, and this became the red markings over his skin, reminding him always of the pain and truth of the ceremony that he had been through. He was raised primarily by the shaman after that, who taught him how to use his special talents.

The Story so Far: Again, he has a murky past, but one thing that is known is that he spent a lot of time at Cyberdata as a S.H.O.C. He ended up at Cyberdata after he attacked the son of a local sheriff who had raped a young Indian girl. Ripclaw was shot, and ended up at the sherrif's jail, waiting to be delivered to the courts, only there was someone at the bar who witnessed Ripclaw's mutations, and contacted Cyberdata. They then removed his hands and replaced them with cybernetic replacements. Robert was also romantically linked with Misery before she betrayed his team and he joined Cyberforce.

Characterization: Ripclaw is definitely the strong, silent type, the quintessential loner, not very sociable, no fun at parties, but definitely the guy to take if you are going on a hike through the woods. He's highly intelligent, introspective, very well-read, and eminently knowledgeable especially with regard to past and present Native-American cultures. He has a strong sense of right and wrong and embodies all the classic virtues of honor, sincerity, respect and compassion.

Friends and Foes: He is close to his Cyberforce teammates but after their successful elimination of Cyberdata (or so it is believed), they each went their separate ways and Riplcaw has become one of the leaders of the new Justice League Avengers X-Men Alliance.

Secret Identity: Vic Sage, Investigative Reporter.

Abilities 66 + Skills 57 (114 ranks) + Advantages 28 + Powers 6 + Defenses 16 = 173 / 173

Build Comments Loves me some Question. He feels really right at a street level PL8. I cannot believe that DC did not capitalize on his tour de force run in the first season of Justice League Unlimited. He stole every episode he was in and I am stunned that they just left it at that. But maybe that's for the best, because as they say in show business, always leave 'em wanting more.

Secret Origins: Victor Sage was born Charles Victor Szasz, and grew up an orphan who had a reputation as a troublemaker. Szasz prided himself in defiantly enduring the physical abuse of the Catholic orphanage where he was housed. Though he managed to get into college, higher learning did not mellow his violent tendencies. Some time during college, he brutally beat a drug dealer for giving him LSD, which had caused Sage to doubt his own senses under its influence.

After graduating from college (where he nursed an unrequited crush on fellow student Lois Lane), Sage made his mark as a highly outspoken and aggressive reporter with a reputation for obnoxiousness in St. Louis, MO. He then moved to television journalism, which eventually led him to investigate Dr. Arby Twain. This particular story would alter the course of Sage's life..

Sage was approached by his former professor, a scientist named Aristotle ("Tot") Rodor, who told Sage about an artificial skin called Pseudoderm, which Rodor had co-developed with Dr. Twain based on the notes of Gotham criminal Bart Magan and research into Gingold, the chemical responsible for the Elongated Man's powers.

Pseudoderm was intended to work as an applied skin-like bandage with the help of a bonding gas, but had an unforeseen toxicity which was fatal when applied to open wounds. Though Rodor and Twain agreed to abandon the project and parted ways, Professor Rodor later discovered that Dr. Twain planned to proceed with an illegal sale of the invention to Third World nations, despite the risk to human health.

Sage resolved to stop him but had no way of going after Dr. Twain without exposing himself. Rodor suggested that Sage use a mask made of Pseudoderm to cover his famous features. Disguised by the Pseudoderm mask and armed with information, Sage eventually caught up with Dr. Twain, stopped the transaction, and extracted a confession from him. He then left Twain bound in Pseudoderm in an ironic twist. On television, Vic Sage reported on Dr. Twain's illegal activities.

With his first venture a success, Sage decided that this new identity would be useful for future investigations. He continued to work with Professor Rodor, who supplied the Pseudoderm and eventually modified the bonding gas, giving it the ability to alter the color of Sage's hair and clothing, as well. Vic became good friends with "Tot," who became a mentor to him in both of his identities. From then on, when Vic Sage encountered stories he couldn't investigate by normal, legal means, he donned a special mask that made it appear that he had no face. As the Question, Sage investigated corruption in the face of all danger, leaving a blank "calling card," which, when touched, emitted a smoky question mark.

The Story so Far: After debuting and doing lots of work in St. Louis, Vic Sage would also travel to other cities in the course of his investigations, and even relocated to Gotham City for a time. He eventually teamed up with Batman and began a relationship with Huntress that ended badly, but after a time, they reconciled as friends and both have remained close.

The Question's early crime fighting career was somewhat successful, but his black-and-white moral viewpoint and lack of commitment would soon lead to a turning point for both Sage and his alter ego.

After his time in Gotham, Vic Sage returned to St. Louis and KBEL television, where he worked alongside news anchor and occasional love-interest Myra Connelly. During a mission as The Question, he was badly beaten in personal combat by the mercenary and martial artist, Lady Shiva, and then nearly fatally beaten by her employer's thugs and shot in the head with a pellet gun. Though he was thrown in a river to drown, Shiva rescued him for reasons of her own and gave him directions to meet Richard Dragon as soon as he was recovered enough to get out of bed. Following a vision of Batman inwhich the Caped Crusader called Sage an "incompetent dilettante", Sage sought out the master martial artist, who retained all of his skill even while confined to a wheelchair. Sage spent a year learning martial arts and Eastern philosophy from Dragon. The training changed and deepened The Question's moral perspective, and the crimefighter became more understanding of the moral ambiguity of his chosen work.
Vic Sage returned to Hub City and resumed his career as The Question with a new, broader worldview, and a belief that crime had to be fought at more than one level.

He had a number of adventurers and after helping them with a recent conflict wth Doctor Doom has joined The Justice League.

Characterization: The Question is the second best investigator in the superhero community outside of Batman (although Ralph Dibny and Detective Chimp are in his league on their good days) and is a master of interrogation and intimidation. He’s obsessed with “the question” and self-discovery and is THE conspiracy theorist of the superhero community.

Friends and Foes: He remains close to Tot and his one time girlfriend Huntress. He and Batman have developed a mutual respect.

Preaching to the choir, Thorp. What's really depressing is to realize that the last time we saw "Captain Marvel" in the mainstream DCU, it was back in 2006, during the first issue of Trials of Shazam, a series that is tied with Curse of Shazam as the worst thing to ever happen to the Marvel Family (and believe me, they had some stiff competition with Countdown, Final Crisis, Injustice and the Giffen-era Justice League). Every other version of Cap has been from an alternate universe, like JUSTICE, Billy Batson and the Magic of Shazam, Thunderworld, Scooby-Doo Team Up or Convergence: Shazam. After 2005, we got Marvel the White, who did nothing. And was then depowered. And then was murdered in Flashpoint. And then turned into the little asshole in Curse of Shazam.

I would actually debate the point of most people not knowing his name. The kids that watched Justice League Unlimited, Batman: The Brave and the Bold and Young Justice all know him as Captain Marvel. That's millions of people. most folks that call him "Shazam" are either comics fans who never read his book and just saw the cover, or people who grew up in the late 70s/early 80s who saw ads for his live action/animated series and never watched them, assuming that his name was "Shazam".

I debated a point over with another fan on CBR when they mentioned that the reason DC changed Cap's name in the books was because Marvel was making movies now, they had given the Captain Marvel name to Carol, and it was likely she was going to get her own movie. And I pointed out DC is still in the same position it's always been with Cap: Marvel has the trademark to the name, DC has the original character whom they can call "Captain Marvel" in anything he appears, just not in the titles of books/movies/tv shows or on the packaging of toys. All DC has to do is make a Shazam movie and they can call Cap "Captain Marvel" there as well. Due to what trademark/copyright protects, they could even have a voice over guy in the commercials say "The return of the first superhero to appear in film, and the ORIGINAL Captain Marvel" and not get in any trouble, since there's a difference between spoken words and printed words.

Granted, the main problem there is that we'd have to rely on DC making a decent Captain Marvel film, and I'm not sure that can happen at this point.

If they really felt they had to change his name, I'd say just make him "Captain Thunder". You can rename Mary "Lady Thunder" and Freddy "Capt. Thunder Jr." or "Lt. Thunder".

Great build of The Question, Thorp. I still consider it one of the greatest missed opportunities in comics history that DC managed to have the character be such a hit on Justice League Unlimited RIGHT when they decided to kill him off in the books. SUCH possibilities there! And now of course the character means nothing again.

But his run on that show was so awesome. The deadpan delivery. His inane conspiracies ("aha! As I suspected. Thirty-TWO flavors"). His weird sexual chemistry with The Huntress. And of course the "I go through EVERYONE's trash." line. Of course, the TV version was basically Question doing Rorschach doing Question, after the comic book Question had become a Zen Master Philosopher, but still. OPPORTUNITIES!

I will of course with the fact that JLU Question was awesome. It is pretty crazy that DC comics didn't take the opportunity to run with this characterization of the Question. It's not like they were ever opposed from taking cues from the DCAU before.

As for great Question quotes:

Huntress: So... what are you wearing?
The Question: Blue overcoat. Fedora.
Huntress: ...You really stink at this.
The Question: Orange socks?

I think DC wqants to use "Shazam" mostly because of the kickbacks from the music service.

I suspect that their reluctance might have been the fact that a good chunk of JLU!Question's crazy-awesomeness came from elements drawn from a certain quote-unquote parody of the character, and their reluctance to mess with that at a point when they were still trying to get Alan Moore to come back. This is something that they've apparently gotten over ... in a somewhat unfortunate way. ;)

226 - Star-Lord

Post by Thorpocalypse »

There's a little movie getting ready to be released on Friday called Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2. In honor, J-Mart is going to be adding a few key members of the cast just to try and give this low budget indie film some much needed advertising!

Um, boss?

I was kidding, Dante! Let's get cracking with this new item for Aisle 2!

Image
Nova: I remember you said to me once, you said... 'if death ever comes your way and won't let you pass... make sure you scream right back in his face.'
Star-Lord: I said that?
Nova: You did.
Star-Lord: Rich, you really shouldn't trust anything I say. Most of the time, I just make stuff up.
Nova: I know. Let's scream in his face anyway.

Abilities 80 + Skills 45 (90 ranks) + Advantages 28 + Powers 36 + Defenses 13 = 202 / 202

Build Comments: Star-Lord rocks the house. The whole universal house. They did a wonderful job of resurrecting his character and making him a player on the cosmic scene is a snarky, universe-weary right hand man of Nova in Annihilation and then the leader of the new Guardians of the Galaxy in the Conquest and in the series that came out of it. Another throw away character that was salvaged by savvy writing. Shame it doesn’t happen more.

And then the movie happened and Chris Pratt killed it and he became an even bigger name. I can't wait for the new movie, even if the early reviews haven't been great. It's very rare that a sequel lives up to the original, and especially in this case where it's being compared to what I think might be the biggest surprise in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I don't think it's the best of the series, but I really do consider it my favorite, so I'm trying to keep my expectations in check.

Secret Origins: Peter Quill, alias Star-Lord was born during an unusual astronomical phenomenon when many of the planets aligned. Seeing no resemblance, the man who believed he was Quill's father angrily accused his wife Meredith of infidelity and attempted to kill the infant, but died of a sudden heart attack. Quill was raised by his single mother, Meredith.

One day Peter returned home, bruised from trying to stop a bully. As he was washing up for dinner, his mother saw a bright light and two aliens emerged. Vowing to end the 'Spartoi bloodline', they killed Meredith. After Quill saw the aliens and his dead mother, he panicked and ran. As the aliens pursued, he grabbed a shotgun and managed to kill them with it. He then found a mysterious device in a closet. Seeing a bright light he flew the house, just before the alien ship destroyed it.

Quill was placed in an orphanage but escaped and eventually became a trainee NASA astronaut. An alien entity called the Master of the Sun eventually visited the space station that Quill and other astronauts were currently inhabiting, and offered the mantle of Star Lord (an interplanetary policeman) to a worthy candidate, Quill volunteered, but was rejected in favor of a colleague he once treated badly.

The Story so Far: Quill was outraged, and NASA ordered his return to Earth and discharge for his conduct. Peter, however, stole a scoutship, and on returning to the space station took his colleague's place. Quill was then chosen to become Star-Lord, with the Master of the Sun first creating an illusion in which he was able to find and kill the aliens that murdered his mother to free him of his past. Equipped with a sentient vessel called "Ship", Quill commenced his role as Star-Lord.

It was later revealed that Peter Quill's father is Jason of Spartax, the second son of the galactic Emperor who acted as Star-Lord before him.

Star-Lord encountered the former Herald of Galactus the Fallen One and was almost killed defeating the entity (Star-Lord's vessel "Ship" was destroyed in the conflict). The pair were subsequently imprisoned in the intergalactic prison the Kyln. Star-Lord was freed by the hero Nova during the Annihilation and aided in the war against villain Annihilus. He later acted as military adviser to the Kree general Ronan the Accuser against the invading alien race the Phalanx. When the Kree homeworld of Hala was conquered by the Phalanx, he led a band of rebels against the invaders until the war was over.

After Ultron and the Phalanx were defeated, Star-Lord formed the new Guardians of the Galaxy. The universe was in a very fragile state after the two Annihilation events and fissures in reality were beginning to form and spread. In order to prevent the collapse of the universe he had Mantis telepathically nudge Adam Warlock, Phyla-Vell, Rocket Raccoon, Drax and Gamora into joining his team. This motley crew set up base in the severed head of a Celestial called Knowhere. When Star-Lord's deception was found out everyone but Mantis quit the team in disgust and sat off on their own quests.

Star-Lord responded to a Kree summons and returned to the Kree homeworld to speak with Ronan. Upon arrival he is shocked to see that they are rebuilding the Phalanx Spire to protect Kree space, he argued with Ronan and then he was thrown into the Negative Zone. He was then forced into helping the newly appointed ruler of the Negative Zone, King Blastaar, into taking over the Super Prison 42 so he could gain access to their portal to earth.

Star-Lord was then sent into 42 to convince them to open the door and surrender. Once inside he spoke with the unofficial leaders of 42 and told them not to surrender but only Jack Flag agreed with him, they tried to stop them but the doors were opened and Blastaar's army was unleashed; after learning of his betrayal Blastaar sent his men to find and kill Starlord. Running for their lives Star-Lord and Jack Flag located a telepath in 42 to ask the Guardians for help and they were able to escape before being killed by Blastaar.

Once he returned to Knowhere, he found that Rocket had assembled a new team, consisting of Major Victory, Bug, Groot and Mantis. Eventually, the other members returned as well, Adam and Gamora returning in order to still help the universe, and Drax and Phyla returning with the newly resurrected Moondragon.

Their first order was to split up and attempt to end the War of Kings, which would cause irreparable damage to the fabric of the universe. Peter led his team to Hala to speak with the Inhumans. Even after telling them the dangers of their war, they refused. Phyla, who now called herself Martyr, had other ideas of negotiating and took Crystal hostage. Star-Lord could not get her to release her prisoner and they were teleported back to Knowhere.

Upon their return, they soon found themselves in the middle of a battle with the Inhumans and the Imperial Guard, who had followed the other team back. After rescuing Crystal, the Inhumans left and the Guardians were left to face the Imperial Guard, who wished to take over the station. In the process of the battle, Starhawk escaped her captivity and took Star-Lord, Mantis, Bug, Jack Flag and Cosmo to her future.

In Starhawk's bleak future, she was finally able to convince them what she had been saying all along was true. A massive fissure was consuming the universe, and it had to be stopped. The two Guardians teams worked together to try to send a message back through time to warn that the fissure, known as the Fault, was actually caused during the War of Kings by Black Bolt.

With their time machine broken, they formed a new plan. The Badoon, who now ruled what little was left of the universe, had enslaved the Celestials and created what was called the Celestial Engine, used to keep the fissure at bay. They send back their message and break the alignment of the Celestial Engine, causing the destruction of this future.

To Star-Lord's surprise, this did not kill them. They found themselves in a different time with a different set of Guardians. Another surprise: he was old enough to be his own grandfather. The Starhawk of this future received messages from his previous selves and learned the truth. The team was adrift in time, which was causing their changes as well. They formed a plan to find a time machine under Avengers Mansion, but once they got there they slipped through time once again. And again. And again. They finally arrived at an alternate future, one ruled by the Magus and the Universal Church of Truth. While battling the members of the Church, they had an unexpected guest: Kang the Conqueror. He returned them to their normal states and took them to his headquarters in limbo. He explained that all futures were becoming Magus futures and it was up to Star-Lord to stop this from happening.

Kang gave Peter a Cosmic Cube and told him that future must be saved at all costs. They were sent back to moments before Adam would turn into the Magus while repairing the Fault. Star-Lord tried to talk to Adam, but the damage had been done. He had overlapped the time lines and essentially he had been the Magus for months.

Adam transformed and began his battle with the Guardians, who were all reunited. After Magus killed Major Victory, Mantis, Cosmo, Gamora and Phyla, Star-Lord was finally able to grab the Cube and use it to revert the Magus back to Adam. Adam told him that he must finish him, and to his own regret, Star-Lord shot and killed his friend. The universe had been saved, but the price was very high.

Adam managed to avoid death however and Magus continued in his service to his Lord Mar-Vell, a Mar-Vell from a universe where death had lost and life had triumphed, resulting in a universe of immortal monsters. When the denizens of Lord Mar-Vels universe, the Cancerverse came out of the fault in order to consume the 5150 universe as well, Peter Quill, together with the rest of the Guardians, Nova and Thanos traveled into the Cancerverse in order to stop Mar-Vel and the Old Ones whom Mar-Vell served. Drax however was driven mad due to the fact that he was an avatar of life in a universe where life had triumphed, and tried to kill Thanos who in turn vaporized him. The Guardians and Thanos met up with the Machine Resistance, the unliving robotic denizens of the Cancerverse who had been immune to Mar-Vell’s conversion of his universe and had fought to stop him ever since. They informed Thanos and the Guardians that Mar-Vell was planning a Necropsy, in which he would kill the Avatar of Death (Thanos) thus killing Death itself. Thanos seemed to betray the Guardians when he submitted to Mar-Vell, but when Mar-Vell ran him through with a sword, Death appeared and due to being summoned by Thanos killed the entire Cancerverse and forced the Old Ones into a coma that would last a very long time. Death however refused to take Thanos with her and he flew into a rage, vowing to destroy the Universe. Peter and Nova however, volunteered to distract him, managing to keep him in the Cancerverse long enough for it to collapse and kill all three of them. The survivors hailed Peter and Nova as heroes and a statue was erected in their honor on Kree-Lar.

Through difficult ways, Star-Lord managed to escape from the Cancerverse and returned with the Guardians of the Galaxy in a new costume similar to his first, it is unknown if Nova has survived as well. Along the rest of his team, he aided the Avengers in fighting the returned Thanos. Thanos managed to get a Cosmic Cube from the Army, with which he escaped to Moord, the homeland of the Badoon. The Guardians arrived at Avengers Tower and informed the Avengers about the situation. They joined the Guardians in fighting Thanos and the Badoon. After Thanos apparently killed the Elders of the Universe, to impose his supremacy, he became one with the Cosmic Cube and did the killed the Avengers and the Guardians as well. But actually, they were sent to the Cancerverse along the Elders, there, Tony Stark found that Thanos' weapon wasn't actually a Cosmic Cube and that it had defects. They bargained with the Collector, in exchange of a weapon capable of deactivating the "Cube" and return to Earth, the Avengers and the Guardians would let Thanos be defeated by the Elders. With the help of other members of the Avengers, Thanos was defeated and sent to punishment by the Elders.

Characterization: Star-Lord is one of the universe’s greatest heroes. What he lacks in power he makes up for in charisma, ingenuity and guts, making him a great leader and a far more formidable foe than he appears.

Friends and Foes: He is close to his Guardians teammates. He has run afoul of several cosmic villains, like Thanos, Blastaar and the Badoon who all want to see him dead.

Underestimated: People often underestimate the talking raccoon…At their own peril…

Abilities 56 + Skills 32 (64 ranks) + Advantages 25 + Powers 19 + Defenses 19 = 151 / 151

Build Comments: Talk about your comic success stories. Rocket was pretty much a joke in the Marvel U for a while, but when he turned up in the Cosmic Marvel scene around Annihilation: Conquest, he was reinvented as a wise-cracking, smarter-than-he-looked, ass-kickin’, big-ass-gun wielding talking raccoon. And it worked!

And OMG did he steal the GOG movie. My son and I laughed almost the whole way through it and no one was funnier than Rocket. And his drunk crying fit…wonderful pathos for a CG character. And from the trailers, doesn't look he's going to let up in the sequel.

Rocket is a great goon-sweeper and team player, being a gifted tactician and having his big ass guns to take down scores of mooks. Rocket and Groot have a great bromance going, too, second only to Teen Titans GO Beast Boy and Cyborg.

Secret Origins: Rocket Raccoon was the "Guardian of the Keystone Quadrant", an area of outer space sealed off from the rest of the cosmos by the so-called Galacian Wall. Rocket was captain of the starship Rack 'n' Ruin, and he and his first mate Wal Russ (a talking walrus) came from the planet Halfworld in the Keystone Quadrant. Halfworld is an abandoned colony for the mentally ill where the animal companions were genetically manipulated to grant them human level intelligence and bipedal body construction for many to become caretakers of the inmates. Rocket was Halfworld's chief law officer ("ranger") who protected the colony against various threats.

The Story so Far: At one point, Judson Jakes tried to steal the Halfworld Bible, but was thwarted by Rocket and the Hulk. Later, Lord Dyvyne abducted Rocket's friend Lylla, and Jakes began the Toy War. As the Toy War continued, Blackjack O'Hare teamed up with Rocket, and Rocket was reunited with Lylla. The Rack 'n' Ruin was soon destroyed, as Judson Jakes and Lord Dyvyne teamed up to kill Rocket Raccoon. Rocket Raccoon and his friends cured the Loonies of their mental illnesses, as Judson Jakes and Lord Dyvyne were apparently killed. Rocket and the animals as well as the robots left Halfworld and took off into space for their own adventures. Some time later, Rocket was revealed to have been a laboratory subject on the Stranger's planet, and escaped his captivity there.

Rocket Raccoon resurfaced as a member of the team chosen to accompany Star-Lord on his mission to stop a Phalanx infiltration of the Kree homeworld. Rocket is depicted as a gifted military tactician who is also fearless, loyal, and insightful. It is also heavily implied that he has a case of obsessive compulsive disorder.[Rocket's trademark rocket skates are absent.

Rocket joins the new Guardians of the Galaxy at the behest of his friend Star-Lord. It is he who suggests that the team adopt that moniker after hearing it mentioned by Major Victory. Later on, when the team almost disbands and Peter Quill disappears (sent into the Negative Zone by Ronan), Rocket keeps the team alive, and brings in Groot as member, as the two had become great friends. Rocket takes over as leader until they rescue Peter, and saved the Earth from an alien invasion.

When the team tries to halt the growing War of Kings, Rocket decides to lead the portion of the team assigned to make contact with the Shi'ar. However, they are unable to teleport into the Emperor Vulcan's flagship and have to be rescued by the Starjammers and Rocket's old friend Ch'od. They are able to bring back the rightful queen of the Shi'ar, but she is killed after Rocket departs, much to his horror.

After the Guardians disband, Rocket Raccoon takes up a normal job with Timely Inc. He and Groot were reunited and tricked into returning to Halfworld: here, he found out his memories of the place were mostly half-truths and deliberately crafted fake memories. In reality, Jakes and Blackjack O'Hare had worked with Rocket in providing security at Halfworld Asylum for the Criminally Insane; Doctor Dyvyne had been Head of Psychology there; and both the anthropomorphic animals and the automaton clowns were deliberately created to work at the asylum, as their appearance would calm the inmates. The crises that Rocket half-remembered had been caused by the psychic supervillain the Star Thief, who had been admitted as an inmate and used his psychic powers to turn the inhabitants against each other. Rocket had turned the warders into a biological "key" to keep Star-Thief locked up, and deliberately altered his mind and left Halfworld so it could never be opened - but he was tricked into returning by the Thief, whose mind had escaped into the asylum after his host body died. Rocket, with his friends’ help, ended up eliminating the threat and returned to the reformed Guardians of the Galaxy.

Characterization: Rocket is a wisecracking raccoon that has a surprising skill for tactics and marksmanship. His innovation has saved the team on many occasions.

Friends and Foes: He is good friends with Star Lord and his current and former Guardians teammates, but he is closest to Groot. He seems to have figured out Groot’s language, translating for him on many occasions.

It’s not known why, but he seems to have run afoul of Lobo in the past and The Main Man seems to want to frag him.

Build Comments: Finally got around to Baby Groot. I'm a little iffy on his stats, but I figure they're in the ballpark. He didn't do a lot other than look cute in the movie and take out one Ravager in pretty spectacular fashion but that was enough for the greater majority of the public. There's going to be lots of Baby Groots in stockings this year, for sure.

Drax: There are two types of beings in the universe: those who dance, and those who do not.
Peter Quill: I get it, yes. I am a dancer, Gamora is not.

Abilities 88 + Skills 30 (60 ranks) + Advantages 21 + Powers 47 + Defenses 13 = 199 / 199

Build Comments: Drax has been through many incarnations, but it’s pretty obvious that his best form was his recent incarnation in a Kratos, um, “inspired”, body with kick-ass melee skills and flaying knives. He was also quite good in Annihilation event. But of course, it was the Guardians of the Galaxy movie that took him to a new level and man, Dave Batista continues to kill it Guardians 2. Pretty much every scene with him and Mantis is awesome.

Secret Origins: Real estate agent Arthur Douglas, his wife Yvette, and daughter Heather, were driving across the Mojave Desert from Las Vegas to Los Angeles when a spaceship carrying the mad Titan named Thanos passed overhead on a surveillance mission to Earth. Wishing to keep his existence a secret, Thanos destroyed the automobile in case its passengers had seen his ship, and then landed to make certain they were dead. Satisfied that they were, Thanos left. Unknown to the Titan, his father Mentor had been monitoring his activities on Earth to examine his son's latest handiwork. Mentor discovered that Heather Douglas was still alive, and took her back to Titan to be raised. She later returned to Earth as Moondragon.

Mentor determined that the threat of his son Thanos could no longer be ignored and wanted to create a being of sufficient power to defeat Thanos. Enlisting the aid of his father Chronos, who millennia before had become a discorporate wraith, Mentor had Chronos seize the astral form of Arthur Douglas before it had completely fled from Douglas's body. Chronos and Mentor then fashioned a humanoid body from the Earth's soil, granted it superhuman powers, and cast Douglas' spirit inside it. Thus they created the being who would become known as Drax the Destroyer.

The Story so Far: Mentor blocked all of Drax's memories of his old life, instilling in him monomaniacal hate for Thanos. For years, Drax served as Thanos' nemesis, thwarting several of the Mad Titan’s plans, but never crushing Thanos himself. Thanos hired legions of alien mercenaries just to keep Drax away from him. Finally, in Thanos' campaign to possess the Cosmic Cube, Drax, in the company of the Avengers, Captain Mar Vell, and Moondragon, saw Thanos destroyed. Suddenly lacking a reason for existence, Drax wandered space in grim contemplation. By the time he learned that Thanos had managed to rematerialize himself, Thanos had once again been killed, this time by being permanently turned to stone. Drax, purposeless again, used Captain Mar-Vell as a scapegoat upon whom to vent his frustrations.

Sometime later, Drax was contacted by his daughter Moondragon and invited to join her in her journey through space in search of knowledge. Drax accepted. The two rode aboard Moondragon's personal starship Sensia, and came upon the planet Ba Banis, a world of humanoid aliens caught in a vast civil war. Moondragon decided to use her mental powers to quell the conflict and then decided to set herself up as the world's goddess. Drax recognized that her ambitions were ignoble and so sent their ship to Earth with a holographic distress message. The Avengers responded and discovered Moondragon's world of mentally enforced tranquility. Freed by the Avengers from his daughter's mental domination, Drax advanced toward her, seeking to end her menace. In order to stop him, Moondragon mentally forced Drax's life essence to vacate his artificial body. Later, after subduing Moondragon and returning to Earth, the Avengers placed Drax's body inside Sensia and sent it into space programmed to self-destruct. Without Drax's spirit inside it, Drax's body was destroyed when the Sensia exploded.

Several years later, when Thanos was resurrected by Mistress Death, Chronos chose to re-animate the Destroyer as well to again combat his mad grandson, and granted him with even greater physical power. However, Titan's God did not take the means of Drax's death into account, and the Destroyer's mind retained the damage done by Moondragon. Despite this setback, following Thanos' defeat and the subsequent breakup of the Infinity Gauntlet, Drax was chosen by Adam Warlock to safeguard the Power Gem as part of the Infinity Watch. Eventually, due to internal strife, the Watch fragmented and went their separate ways. Afterwards, Drax returned to Titan with Moondragon, who would successfully petition Kronos to restore Drax's mind to its former acuity, at the cost of some physical power. Thus, Drax was restored to his original condition.

Since then, Drax's condition began to revert. His mass and strength climbed back to previous levels, and his mind became clouded once more. Finally, he sought out Moondragon, which led to an altercation with Genis-Vell, son of Mar-Vell and the new Captain Marvel. In the course of this struggle, Drax was transported to the microverse with Genis, where he finally found acceptance and happiness on the planet K'ai, where he remained for some time.

Drax was later seen on a prison ship with Paibok, Lunatik, and the Blood Brothers. He is accused of murdering 200,000 Skrulls. They are to have been transported to an intergalactic prison, but the ship crashes on Earth under mysterious circumstances. Drax attacks the others to keep them from harming innocent lives. His intelligence comes back to him at random intervals during his fight with the other prisoners. While on Earth, and at a low-point of intelligence, he wanders through Alaska and confuses a young girl named Cammi for his daughter. As he slowly wanders through the country side, he encounters Paibok yet again. Paibok ruthlessly murders him, yet Drax emerges with a new body with a higher intelligence and possibly other unknown abilities. This "new" Drax kills Lunatik and one of the Blood Brothers. The mini-series ends with Drax and Cammi back on a prison ship.

Surviving Annihilus' attack on the intergalactic prison known as the Kyln, Drax and Cammi team up with the last member of the Xandarian Nova Corps, Richard Rider (Nova). Together they fight against the advancing Annihilation Wave. Drax teaches Nova the power of concentration so that he may contain the entire Nova force. Moreover, Nova asks Drax to teach him an important lesson: How to destroy.

During a doomed battle between the Annihilation Wave and the United Front on Daedalus 5, Drax stays behind to fight off the invaders while Nova and the rest of the group (including Cammi) finish the evacuation. Drax fights his way to one of the Annihilation Wave's ships in his quest for Thanos. He finds the Titan attempting to release Galactus from his prison on Annihilus' mother ship. Before Thanos can release Galactus using his unique energy signature, Drax breaks through Thanos' defensive shield and punches a hole through the Titan's chest. Drax then realizes that they could "trick" the security system into shutting off by using the Silver Surfer, which succeeds. Once Galactus is freed, he teleports Moondragon and Drax to a far-off planet to spare them from his wrath on the Annihilation Wave. Afterwards, Moondragon says Drax just "disappeared", with it heavily implied she was covering for him so that he could look for Cammi.

After the events of the Annihilation war, the Kree empire was invaded and cut off from the rest of the universe by the Phalanx, led by Ultron. Drax was hunted down and captured by former allies Gamora and Richard Rider (Nova), who were assimilated into the Phalanx by the transmode virus. Drax was likewise infected with the same virus and was dispatched to hunt down Nova, along with Gamora, after Rider regained control of his mind thanks to the Nova force inside him. The pair tracked Nova all the way back to the Phalanx's home world of Kvch where they are all cured of the virus by the Technarch mutant Warlock and his ward Tyro.

Armed with the knowledge of how to beat the Phalanx and cure the virus, Nova, Gamora, Drax, Warlock, and Tyro breach the barrier surrounding the Kree empire and assist a recently resurrected Adam Warlock and the new Quasar (Phyla-Vell) in destroying Ultron. Drax now is a member of the newly formed Guardians of the Galaxy team, led by Star-Lord (Peter Quill) and serves alongside such characters as Phyla-Vell, Adam Warlock, Rocket Raccoon, and Gamora. He is one of the teams more grim and solitary figures, but is a force of destruction which has bailed them out of many predicaments in the team’s first few missions.

Drax with Quasar were looking for Cammi when they learned that Heather was alive. Then, they went to Mentor for help, but Mentor tried to kill them then sent them to Oblivion. There they met Maelstrom who brought them to the Dragon of the Moon. There, he betrayed them when he took control of Quantum Bands and fed Phyla-Vell to the Dragon. Shortly after, Wendell Vaughn arrives giving time to Drax to cut off Maelstrom's hands. After a victory against the Maelstrom and the Dragon they headed back to Titan with Moondragon.

After celebrating with the team, Drax was sent alongside Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Major Victory and Adam Warlock to Shi'ar Empire to find Emperor Vulcan and negotiate about the upcoming war with the Kree. In return, the Guardians will help them to free Lilandra. After, they returned and counter-attacked the imperial guard out of Knowhere.

Drax with the rest of the team was there went Peter Quill send a message through the time-space. After that Drax, Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Major Victory and Phyla-Vell were been teleported to Attilan. They were engaged with the Inhumans until a giant space squid emerged from The Fault and attacked the city. Drax went to defend the city from it until Adam Warlock came to stop The Fault and ends up becoming Magus and ruler of the Universal Church of Truth. The Guardians engage a long battle against this organization that ended with the resurrection of Thanos.

Drax wanted to kill Thanos even though the Guardians were collaborating with him in order to stop the Cancerverse's invation. After a failed attempt to kill Thanos, Drax is murdered by the Mad Titan. Inexplicably, Drax was revealed to be alive and back in the Guardians.

Characterization: Drax is a vicious combatant and is obsessed with killing Thanos.

Friends and Foes: He is working to repair his relationship with his daughter, Moondragon and remains loyal to his Guardians teammates. He is driven to kill Thanos, seemingly at a level that even he cannot control.
