Build Comments: I only got to see Supergiant in action for a little bit. She’s a telepath, but not stronger than Rachel Grey, who was able to take her in psychic combat. She got taken out pretty quickly in Infinity as well, if memory serves.

Secret Origins/The Story so Far/Characterization: Her history is unknown. Supergiant is the most psychotic of the Black Order. An omnipath and telepathic vampire, Supergiant feeds off of others' intelligence. Any intelligence and information Supergiant knows, Thanos knows.

Friends and Foes: Thanos and the Black Order.

POWERS:
Black Tongues: Comprehend 4 (Read, Speak, Understand, Understood in All languages); 8 pts

COMPLICATIONS:
Motivation: Spreading chaos and learning secrets.
Responsibility: To Thanos.
Secret: He says he has no powers, but that, like most other things he says, seem to be a lie. So there is no telling what else HE is not telling.

Abilities 74 + Skills 48 (96 ranks) + Advantages 10 + Powers 92 + Defenses 18 = 242 / 242

Build Comments: Ebony Maw is wicked. Dude was able to possess Doctor Strange. That’s practically impossible game-wise the way I, and others, have him built (+16-18-ish Will seems to be the prevailing range), so you know he’s good. And he seemed to do it through manipulation, not just telepathic power. It was most impressive.

Secret Origins/The Story so Far/Characterization: Ebony Maw is probably the most dangerous of Thanos' lieutenants of the Black Order, not because of his physical power but his mental power. A seducer and manipulator, Ebony Maw is a psychological mastermind.

Friends and Foes: Thanos and the Black Order. For as long as it serves his interests.

X+Y=Never: The Badoon are split between the war-like males and the pacifist females and only meet to mate.

Abilities 32 + Skills 7 (14 ranks) + Advantages 5 + Powers 1 + Defenses 5 = 50 / 50

Build Comments: The Badoon have been a staple of the Cosmic Marvel scene for a long time, basically as fodder for their cosmic heroes to beat down. Or for other cosmic races to have a universe-wide cosmic race to reference for an insult.

I think they were Thanos’ foot soldiers in Infinity, but I never read anything that specifically stated that was them, but I couldn’t figure out who else it could be. But then again, half of Infinity, I didn’t know what the hell was going on, so I’m sure I just missed it.

Secret Origins: The Badoon are older than the Kree and the Skrulls. There was a natural hatred between the two genders, and they fought each other in long gender wars. Eventually, the males won, placing the females in captivity. In time, the males developed technology and abandoned Lotiara, returning only when their mating drive made it necessary. The males became conquerors of worlds, while the females became pacifists, content to remain in peace on their homeworld and ignorant of the males' star-spanning empire.

The Story so Far: Among the Brotherhood's conquest attempts are the Zen Whoberi, and the extra-dimensional world of Polemachus. They have been known to form alliances with the Brood (against the Shi'ar and Earth's superhumans), the Kree (against the Skrulls), and Byrrah of Atlantis. They were also responsible for killing a woman who would have become the universe's greatest peacemaker.

Badoon invasion attempts of Earth have been overcome by the Silver Surfer, Namor, and the New Warriors. They were also opposed by the combined forces of the X-Men, the Fantastic Four and Arkon in order to liberate Arkon's homeworld and prevent an invasion of the Shi'ar empire.

At the time of the Annihilation Wave the Badoon Empire controlled 37.7% of the Milky Way Galaxy. Despite this, the Badoon are generally considered a minor species. The time traveller Major Victory warned the Guardians of the Galaxy that they need to take the Badoon seriously, as soon they'll become the greatest military threat in the galaxy.

Abilities 48 + Skills 10 (20 ranks) + Advantages 7 + Powers 6 + Defenses 8 = 79 / 79

Build Comments: I’ve been reading more comics online, even though I swore I wouldn’t. One of the reasons is the abundance of free offerings from the major publishers, to get you to try it. One of the free ones I read were the Marvel Infinte comic for Gamora that they put up just before the new Marvel NOW relaunch of the GOG book.

In it, Gamora does some major league goon sweeping of the Badoon and for the climax, she has a prolonged fight with a big-ass Badoon that she actually had a hard time putting down. Not having ever seen a Badoon like that, I figure he was either an Andre the Giant-like anomaly or the Badoon are breeding some brutes. I decided for the Thorpacoverse, they are breeding brutes. I might tweak this one a bit since it based on that one appearance, but they’re basically just higher level mooks that can make characters like the GOG work a bit before ultimately winning.

COMPLICATIONS:
Responsibility: To the Badoon empire.

Abilities 44 + Skills 10 (20 ranks) + Advantages 5 + Powers 54 + Defenses 10 = 123 / 123

Build Comments: The Monster of Badoon is a nice, big, ugly powerhouse that the Badoon have broken out against some super teams in the past and he recently got a new look in the previous Guardians of the Galaxy series.

Secret Origins: The monster of Badoon is a monster robot of the Brotherhood of the Badoon. They refer to him as the Weapon of Weapons. He is usually used after all other weapons fail to destroy their target. He has immense strength and durability and has fought the Silver Surfer, the Thing and Colossus.

Recently, the Badoon have created several of the Monsters, as well as other enhanced soldiers, in preparation for an as yet unrevealed campaign.

Vulnerable: Magnetic effects.
Weakness: While Ultron's outer shell is made of Adamantium, most of his joints and his internal parts and circuitry are not, making them more susceptible to attacks.

Abilities 92 + Skills 23 (46 ranks) + Advantages 4 + Powers 157 + Defenses 11 = 287 / 287

Build Comments: I actually liked Ultron in the last Avengers movie. Well, I mean, Age of Ultron, Civil War was kinda the last Avengers movie, but I digress. The movie overall didn't live up to first, but that was a tall order. Still, it was entertaining. But of course, my Ultron is old school and was birthed by and wants to kill Pym, the way it should be.

The drones are below.

Secret Origins: Ultron-1 was constructed by Dr. Hank Pym of the Avengers as the famed scientist/adventurer was experimenting in high-intelligence robotics. Ultron became sentient and rebelled, hypnotizing Pym and brainwashing him into forgetting that Ultron had ever existed.

The Story so Far: He immediately began improving upon his rudimentary design, quickly upgrading himself several times to become Ultron-5. He then went on to organize the second incarnation of the Masters of Evil under the guise of the Crimson Cowl, and battled Pym and his teammates in the Avengers.

Ultron has since generally remained a solo operative, being too monomaniacally genocidal to willingly work alongside any human for any length of time. His most notable achievements may be the creation of the "synthezoid" called the Vision, whose body was a copy of the original Human Torch and whose mind was based on that of Wonder Man.

Ironically, although the Vision fought the Avengers at first, he joined the team soon after, becoming one of their most prominent members and even leading the team at one point. Ultron also created a "mate", Jocasta, who also joined the Avengers. Ultron tried again with the creation of Alkhema the War Toy, whose mind was based on that of Mockingbird. Like his other creations, Alkhema turned on him, although she alone shared his desire to replace humanity with machine life. Although Ultron has been destroyed countless times, he has rebuilt himself anew each time, usually renumbering himself in the process after being destroyed by the Avengers.

Several of his bodies, beginning with Ultron-6, have been composed of Adamantium or of a slightly weaker adamantium alloy called "secondary adamantium". He continually battled the Avengers, Justice League, Fantastic Four and other heroes throughout the years, each time being defeated and believed destroyed. However, after the fallout of the Civil War, a new group of Avengers emerged and so did Ultron by taking over Iron Man's armor once again; only this time altering the physical structure of not only the armor, but Starks body into a female form modeled after Janet Van Dyne. The Avengers defeated him again with a virus that was uploaded into Stark’s armor, turning him back to normal and expelling Ultron’s consciousness.

However, this was not the end of Ultron, for his disembodied consciousness was drawn to a Babel Spire on a world conquered by the Phalanx. Instead of being assimilated, Ultron took control of the Phalanx through sheer will, bending them to his will. In turn, they viewed Ultron as the sympathetic father they had yearned for. Together, they invaded Kree space and subjugated the majority of the Kree Empire, separating it from the rest of the universe with a massive energy shield.

Because of his brief merging with Iron's Man's armor, Ultron realized that merging both organic and technology would enable him to exceed the limitations of both. Therefore, he set his eyes on Adam Warlock, who had been in hibernation and viewed by Ultron as perfection. Ultron then collaborated with the High Evolutionary into transferring his mind into Adam's. Once the transfer was complete, Ultron planned on creating an army of Adam Warlocks to conquer Earth. However, Nova returned, accompanied by the Technarchy Warlock. Warlock used his nonaggressive strain of the transmode virus against Ultron, forcing him to abandon Adam's body. Ultron then took over the android Praxagora, who was in control of fifteen thousand Kree sentries immune to the transmode virus ready to annihilate Hala on Ronan the Accuser's command. Ultron used those sentries to form a gigantic body for himself, ready to destroy all the interlopers. However, the Wraith used his Exolon symbiotes to trap Ultron in his body so he couldn't escape and Quasar, empowered by all the deceased Kree souls, destroyed Ultron once and for all.

Or so it was believed…

Characterization: Ultron is a criminally insane rogue sentient robot dedicated to conquest and the extermination of humanity.

Friends and Foes: Ultron has become an enemy of humanity as a whole but his greatest rival is his “father”, Hank Pym.

Abilities 98 + Skills 32 (64 ranks) + Advantages 8 + Powers 65 + Defenses 14 = 217 / 217

Build Comments: My take on Grodd for my setting. I thought the DCA build was pretty close, but it missed a few things I’ve seen Grodd do in JLU and in other books that I liked. I had to add his Pain move which is basically a Mental Blast that he used to lay out Superman in the DCAU and his mass Mind Control that he used in Batman/Superman where he was controlling Grundy, Mongul and other supervillains at once. Plus, the DCA version didn’t give him Expertise: Science, which I found odd.

I've also included some robotic minions for him, as well. A few giant gorilla robots and some little chimp robots should make him even more formidable.

Secret Origins: Gorilla Grodd is a hyper-intelligent telepathic gorilla with the power to control the minds of others. At one time, he was nothing more than an average ape, but after an alien spacecraft crashed in his African home, Grodd and his troupe were imbued with super intelligence by the ship's pilot. Grodd and fellow gorilla Solovar also develop telepathic and telekinetic powers.

The Story so Far: Taking the alien as their leader, the gorillas constructed a super advanced home named Gorilla City. The gorillas lived in peace until their home was discovered by prying explorers. Grodd forces one of the explorers to kill the alien and takes over Gorilla City, planning to conquer the world next. Solovar telepathically contacts Barry Allen to warn him of the evil gorilla's plans, and Grodd is defeated.

The villain manages to return again and again to plague the Flash and his allies. He caused the first assembling of the Flash's Rogues Gallery, breaking them out of jail to distract the Flash so that he could escape confinement.

He has made no fewer than eighteen attempts to eliminate all traces of humanity from the face of the earth. One of Grodd’s widest ranging schemes was to arrange Solovar's assassination and manipulate Gorilla City into war against humanity, with the aid of a "shadow cabinet" of prominent gorillas called Simian Scarlet. In the course of this, Grodd absorbs too much neural energy from his fellow apes, leaving him with the intelligence of a normal gorilla. He has since recovered, and a failed attempt to set up a base in Florida leads to his capture and incarceration in Iron Heights.

Grodd has since escaped and is rumored to be working on a new plan for world domination.

Characterization: Grodd is a brilliant creature, but his obsession for being seen as the great genius he is and plan on ruling Gorilla City and then the world hinder his thinking at times.

Friends and Foes: His greatest rivals are follow gorillas Solovar, Nnamadi and The Flash.

Build Comments: DC loves their gorillas and honestly, I’m a mark for them as well. Since Grodd, Mallah, Ultra Humanite and others just aren’t enough, they added Silverback. Originally, he was actually an android that fought Blue Beetle (Jaime) and was pretty much a one shot. But recently, he’s popped as a real gorilla in the animated Batman Unlimited series. So as I am often wont to do, I did an amalgam of the two versions. My Silverback is a real gorilla, with silver body armor and a similar array of powerful weapons.

Secret Origins/The Story so Far/ Characterization: Little is known of Silverback’s background. He has been a member of the Brotherhood of Evil, but recently has set out on his own as a villain for hire.

Abilities 26 + Skills 6 (12 ranks) + Advantages 4 + Powers 93 + Defenses 10 = 139 / 139

Build Comments: Cy-Gor was a character in the Spawn-verse that had a good short run, but eventually died out. I always liked the Cy-Gor concept and I thought that someone like Grodd, or another super genius would try to do something like that, so I whipped these lower level Cy-Gors as minions for Grodd in preparation for usage in a test. A main Cy-Gor build would be probably a full PL10, if not PL11. These PL9 versions under Grodd’s control should make for a fun test for one of my super teams.

Secret Origins: During The Agency’s quest to develop the ultimate controllable supersoldier, Jason Wynn and his overseas military allies discovered that a Taiwanese cartel was at least three years ahead of them on a similar project. Wynn sent in his best soldier, Al Simmons, to steal the data and eliminate the competition under the guise that they were a terrorist organization whose project would threaten the safety of the United States. Simmons infiltrated the lab, hacked into their computer systems and retrieved the data. He then destroyed the lab and all records contained in it, save those now in his possession. He returned to the United States and gave the data to Wynn. This data was combined with The Agency’s own research and a new project was initiated, codenamed Project: SIM, also known as Project: SIMIAN.

Shortly afterwards Simmons had been killed on the order of Wynn, and one of the younger agents was ready to blow the whistle on the assassination. Konieczni had trained under Simmons and was a close personal friend. Before he could go public he was captured by The Agency and became the test subject of Project: SIM.

The intel data from the project called for a half-man, half-gorilla monster, fused and augmented with cybernetic enhancements. Data acquired from the mafia attempts to make a similar soldier indicated that human nature would need to be subverted with more cybernetics. The combination of the ape, man and metal was theorized to be the best alternative. The ape could be fused with more bionic enhancements because of its pain threshold, making it far stronger than OvertKill however less strong than Tremor, meanwhile the human component would give the beast rational capabilities and the ability to follow orders. An 1:9 ape to man ratio was what would be idea for this project. This was not what actually happened. The Agency scientist, Dr. Wilhelm, had been distracted throughout the project with trying to adapt the process to save his wife, whose brain he was keeping alive after her body died from a sudden onset of a debilitation illness. Wilhelm fused Konieczni’s brain to the ape, but was never able to get the ape to man ratio lower than 50:50 leaving the beast controllable unless enraged enough that the dominant ape reverted to its own savage nature.

However, it escaped its restraints before the process was completed, and killed an agent sent to retrieve it and the doctor.

The Story so Far: Cy-Gor escaped Wilhelm’s compound and was headed for New York. It recognized Al Simmon’s soul and keyed into his necroplasmic aura. Cy-Gor blamed Al for its creation and sought to kill him for his part in Project: SIM. It found him in the alleys and attacked him, speaking at times as the parts that were Mike came alive and began to remember the horrors it had been through. After being defeated by Spawn, Cy-Gor was left in the alleys and retrieved by one of Wynn’s handling teams. He was presumed dead but awoke in transport and killed yet another squad of handlers before escaping.

Someone retrieved the notes on the process and got them out on the black market. Grodd acquired them and created his own Cy-Gor minions to aid him in his plans for world domination.

Surprised Grodd hasn't made an enemy of the Panther and by proxy either a rivalry or enemy of the Man Ape who I imagine hed see as a mockery of true Apedom.

Nice work with Thanos's band of baddies there, Thorp. They're a group I'm ALWAYS forgetting to get around to. I think it's because they only showed up for that one arc and then never did much else. I don't even remember what happened with most of them- I think Black Dwarf made some comment about Thanos losing, and Thanos killed him out of anger.

They suffered from "Hickman Syndrome", where he created and created and created... and then forgot to give people distinct personalities or anything interesting to do in the plot, so his bad-ass lil' army of supervillains were just kind of a speed-bump in the plot, save the Ebony Maw.

So was Cy-Gor just one guy in the Spawn book? I remember seeing a LOT of toys and mentions of guys like him, Overtkill and Violator, but I've only seen Violator in the comics.

I think Hickman shows that the reason a lot of the modern age feels like the 90s is that we've got a lot of similar attitudes, only instead of big name artists just sketch-padding characters, we have big name writers doing more or less the same thing. Whereas before it was artistic style over substance, we basically have decompressed long-winded, bloated, self-indulgent storylines that are equally full of sketchpad characters or characters whose characterization is twisted to fit the needs of the story.

Basically, we've got the story version of 90s art, instead of the balance you'd get pairing a Byrne and a Claremont, or a Wolfman and a Perez, or a Busiek and a Perez.

Good point. I was planning on doing some rewriting for my "new" world, actually, after BGIII reminded me how half-assed some of what I've done has been. ;) I'll have to work that in.

Yeah, Hickman has Kirby-like creativity and productivity when it comes to world building, but he does have that "well, now that all things have been in place...I'm bored...on to new stuff" thing going on. So many of the characters and ideas he created for the Infinity arc had such potential, but there was so much it got lost in the massive glut of characters and arcs that Marvel has going on.

And yes, there was originally just one Cy-Gor in the Spawn books. But I was thinking that if a Cy-Gor existed, he would be something that Grodd would have a great interest in and that he could easily convince (or coerce) some of his loyal followers to subjecting themselves to that cyberization.

Mental Instability: Franklin has had bouts with depression and other psychological issues over the years.

Abilities 44 + Skills 22 (44 ranks) + Advantages 5 + Powers 156 + Defenses 17 = 244 / 244

Build Comments: Graviton is one of those villains that should be bigger than he is, but he just can’t quite seem to break into the full time big leagues. I actually have the issue where he debuted against the Avengers and he kicked some serious ass. But that lame 70’s “scientist gone MAD” angle was played and he gets bounced around a lot now. But he was kickin’ arse again in the new Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes cartoon so I thought I would add him to the list of villains I might test my Justice League or Avengers against.

And he is wicked bad. An 18 rank blast and sustained Move Object mechanic that I borrowed from Taliesin's Magneto, which allows him to lift a cruise ship and then throw Thor into the atmosphere at the same time. He's a bad, bad man, it's a good thing for the heroes that he's a flake. I almost nerfed his Will defense to make that a total weakness but for now, he's still pretty good.

Secret Origins: Franklin Hall is a physicist involved in an experiment in a private research facility in the Canadian Rockies. A mistake in Hall's calculations causes graviton particles to merge with his own molecules, and Hall later discovers that he can mentally control gravity. Hall at first tries to hide his newfound ability, but becomes tempted by the potential power, and donning a costume adopts the alias "Graviton."

The Story so Far: When Graviton takes over the research facility and forbids all communications with the outside world, a fellow scientist sends a distress signal to the superhero team the Avengers. A furious Graviton then lifts the facility several thousands of feet into the sky and threatens to kill the scientist. The Avengers then arrive and attack, but with the exception of the Black Panther are all defeated when trapped in a gravity field. The Panther escapes and summons the thunder god Thor, who battles Graviton to a standstill until Graviton is tricked into thinking a fellow scientist he cares for has committed suicide. Graviton then panics and causes the entire facility to collapse on him, forming a giant stone sphere that is dropped into a river by the Avengers.

Hall has faced off against the Avengers and Thor many times, but has never been able to gain a permanent victory of them.

Characterization: Hall is one of the most powerful people on the planet, but his biggest weakness is that he very emotionally and mentally disturbed, making him much less of a threat than he could be.

Friends and Foes: Hall is currently a member of the High Council of A.I.M. since they went public.

EQUIPMENT:

Inferiority Complex: Doctor Light can be driven into a rage if sufficiently mocked, belittled, or if his immense self-doubt is otherwise enflamed.
Reputation: Light has been known to try and dominate those who will not submit to his will, including rumors of him taking sexual liberties with female victims.
Vulnerable: Doctor Light’s powers require ambient light, suffering a Weakness effect in reduced light exposure. The Gamemaster determines the effect’s rank, as suits lighting levels. The powers don’t work at all in total darkness.

Abilities 38 + Skills 16 (32 ranks) + Advantages 2 + Powers 74 + Defenses 20 = 150 / 150

Build Comments: Ah, Doctor Light. Not sure exactly what to say about him, other than I liked him as a jobber moreso than a serial rapist. But that whole thing is such a touchy issue, it’s hard to separate the two and I’ll just leave it that I’d rather see that type of issue dealt with in other mediums, not comics.

Still, his bad ass turn against the Titans when he got his full capabilities back was a pretty great arc. He was probably rolling at PL15-ish during that arc because he took on probably 20-25 current and former Teen Titans and he held his own. For this build, I went middle of the road with him. He can take on a team of Titans pretty easily, and be a big threat to someone like Batman, but against The Justice League or Avengers, he wouldn’t last long.

Secret Origins: Arthur Light was initially a physicist. The first Dr. Light was his partner at STAR Labs, a scientist named Jacob Finlay. Finlay had used a technically advanced suit to control light as a small-time superhero, but was accidentally killed by Arthur Light while his career was still taking off. Arthur took the suit and the "Doctor Light" name and used them for criminal means. He was then haunted by Finlay's ghost throughout the years, but usually used the light generated by the suit to drive off Finlay's spirit.

The Story so Far: Light did some small time supervillain work, then decided to take on the Justice League. After a sound defeat, and several other failed attempts, he decided to fight their sidekicks, the Teen Titans. He then organized a small group of super villains who he named the Fearsome Five, but after being defeated by the Teen Titans, Light was expelled from the team quite violently. Each criminal caper led to Light's defeat, often humiliating him in the process. Light's most humiliating and scarring defeat was by Little Boy Blue and his Blue Boys, who were a group of children without any superpowers. It was during this age when Dr. Light was considered a joke villain.

It was later revealed that Arthur Light had raped Sue Dibny, the wife of Elongated Man, some time in the past, and that unfortunately, she was not even close to his only victim. The Justice League decided to not only wipe Dr. Light's mind of the experience so that their loved ones would be protected, but also alter his personality so that he was less dangerous. Zatanna accomplished this, although she was somewhat inexperienced at this time, and accidentally gave him partial lobotomy. This explained how he went from a foe capable of challenging the entire Justice League to being a lower class villain, struggling against the likes of the Teen Titans and the Atom alone. He later became aware of the alterations to his memories.

Dr. Light later kidnapped Green Arrow and used him as bait to start his revenge on the Teen Titans. When the Titans responded to the call and came, Dr. Light attacked without any remorse. No longer hampered by Zatanna's mental blocks, he nearly managed to kill the Titans. The Titans called in every hero who had ever been a Titan to join the battle before Dr. Light was defeated by Cyborg.

After this defeat, he was incarcerated but eventually managed to escape and remains at large.

Characterization: Originally, Doctor Light derived his powers from his suit, but over time he internalized this ability, and could use his powers without having to use his costume. He was mentally brilliant, a genius in the field of physics. However, his mindwipe by the Justice League reduced his intelligence substantially, and he lost his skill for creative use of his powers. Light's recent recovery of his memories seems to have brought his intellect back with them. As a result, he became a much deadlier opponent, capable of fighting a huge team of Teen Titans to a narrow defeat and facing off against multiple superheroes at once.

Friends and Foes: He has run afoul of several heroes over the years, but he seems to have a vendetta against the Teen Titans, no matter who is on the team at the time.
