Marvel's Cinematic Netflix Universe: General Discussion
Marvel's Cinematic Netflix Universe: General Discussion
As with the CW thread, I figured a thread to discuss any and all aspects of the Netflix aspect of the MCU would be fun. So anything about Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, the Defenders, the Punisher, etc. Feel free to discuss.

Daredevil is by far the best so far. I couldn't bring myself to watch Jessica Jones after the ending of the first episode. Luke Cage has some issues, but it's got some really great elements, especially Luke himself and Night Nurse, and they really nailed the atmospheric elements, especially the soundtrack. Really hoping Iron Fist knocks it out of the park.

I enjoyed Daredevil first season immmensly, but I just lost a lot of interests in the second season once Elektra showed up. I eventually finished it, but I went from devouring the first half of the season in a single weekend to forcing myself to watch the rest over the span of two months. I don't know why, but I've never cared for or about Elektra as a character and her actress just seemed to have Anti-Charisma.
I didn't expect to like Jessica Jones as I never cared for the Alias comic book or Kristen Ritter as a performer. I am happy to say I was proven wrong. Tremendously wrong.
I've only had time to catch the first few episodes of Luke Cage, but I've enjoyed them and hope to be able to binge watch the rest soon.

I think the perfect venue for Moon Knight is Netflix. There'd be enough time to get into not only his backstory, but do proper justice to his madness, all at the right level of maturity.

I think Moon Knight is a little to obviously a pastiche of the Batman to be acceptable to the non-comics geek audience that the MCU and especially the Netflix MCU shows depend on for the bulk of their audience.badpenny wrote:I think the perfect venue for Moon Knight is Netflix. Rachael Taylor's portrayal of Patsy Walker was strong enough to anchor a Hellcat series, but depending on the writers it might too closely follow the story beats of Jessica Jones. I think there is a lot of potential there though and hope to see it developed.
If Marvel Studios gave me creative control and a blank check, my dream project would be a Namor series that was equal parts Band of Brothers and The Tudors. Half of it focusing on Namor and the Invaders punching National Socialists in the face, half of it being political plotting back in Atlantis.

I think the biggest problem with Patsy Walker is she wouldn't be a brooding mass of angst and crime.

i've actually picked up watching Daredevil&love the Series....I just wish they'd bring in Scarlett Johansen as The Widow(she was a major Relationship story for Matt in the comics...
Re: Marvel's Cinematic Netflix Universe: General Discussion
Daredevil set the bar
Jessica Jones jumped over it
Luke Cage hit like a rockstar
The problem there is I think they plan on doing Punisher ... and one nut job is enough in the line up probably maxes their quota.
My current fear is seeing Danny in a beard ... ugh.

I'd love to see this done with a modern day focus of him as a mercenary turned vigilant via Khonshu. I think with the right writers respectfully focusing on his mental issues they could avoid the Batman patiche ... or they could easily flub it and it look like the knock off we fear.

Re: Marvel's Cinematic Netflix Universe: General Discussion
As much as I love Scarlett Johansson, she pulls in more for as a supporting player in a single movie than Netflix budgets for entire series. However, when I am made God-Emperor of the Universe, a Black Widow movie is going to go to the top of the production queue... Just as soon as Scarlett and I finish our honeymoon.
Shut up. It's my daydream.
The Netflix MCU seems to be doing very well with their "gritty" street level Bronze Age-y focus. Which makes me think Moon Knight is a little too four color. Yes, I know his better comics runs have been about the most grim-n-gritty things Marvel ever published (outside of their 'Max' imprint) but he still needs that all-white costume, the moon-aranags, the gadgets, the mystical Konshu stuff. Frankly, I just don't see it fitting in with the rest of the line.
A Patsy Walker series would probably be lighter than the current Netflix MCU stuff. But I think that isn't a barrier: CW's The Flash is much lighter than Arrow but it still works. So maybe this would be a good direction for the Netflix MCU to grow?
My other "dream project" choices for a Netflix MCU miniseries would be seeing Jeremy Renner starring in an adaptation of the Matt Faction Hawkeye run; or maybe a miniseries about the Hulk that fills in the gaps between his first MCU movie and The Avengers.
I could also see the Fantastic Four working as an ongoing regular television series. But Mephisto himself probably couldn't untangle that contact.
Edit: Removed odd bit where I accidentally pasted a D&D rule in the middle of a sentence.

I hear a lot of people saying that X is a copy of Y (MK is a copy of Batman), but I don't buy it. If you look back at Batman's history, isn't he a copy of Dick Tracy? I mean all those villains of DT's are all in the same ballpark as Batman's, and I can't get past that. Sure, MK is a costumed crime fighter with some similar weapons, but, really, that's where it stops. It's only superficially that they're similar and the execution is vastly different.
Whatever. I like MK and don't like Batman and would love to see an MK series done right. Full stop.

There are many things that differentiate Moon Knight from the Batman, I'm not saying that he's a "rip off" or a "copy." However, you can't deny that they fill the same basic Archetype — badass normal urban vigilantes who fight crime using gadgets, martial arts, and boomerangs, whilst wearing an awesome cape.
There's at least as much common ground between the two as there are between Aquaman and Namor, Superman and Captain Marvel, Katana and Silver Samurai, Timber Wolf and Wolverine... Comics are filled to the brim with characters who are superficially similar to one another.
That poses a problem for adapting a character like Moon Knight. The Batman is much better known to the non-comic-reading public than Moon Knight. He's one of the mostly widely known characters in pop culture, period. This means a series about any hero who even comes close to the urban vigilante archetype is going to get compared to him: it happened to Arrow, it happened to Daredevil, heck it happened to ByVS's spin-off Angel.
I mean, what do you think the general public would make of a Doctor Mid-Nite film? Probably some variation of "Oh, so it's Daredevil as a doctor."

Right, the general public would probably make that comparison and that might very well lead the creators to think they'll lose money as no one would watch (in the case of commercial TV), or for a subscriber-based model (Netflix) that it wouldn't draw new viewers.
OTOH, creators keep re-visiting franchises so they feel/know that they'll make enough money--it's new ideas that are scary. They're unwilling to take a chance. Which means we probably won't see an MK series. Too bad, because a movie wouldn't work at all; you need those 13 hours to explore how complicated MK is. IMO.

The new Iron Fist trailer dropped. It seems to be pretty faithful to the source material in the general, but fit well into the MCNU in the specific, and may just have the potential to be the most awesome series of the lot. Hopefully. I'm a huge fan of the character ever since I read the good parts of the Immortal Iron Fist series, and this is a make-or-break for the MCNU for me.
