The Criterion Collection edition of Godzilla (which comes with the Raymond Burr Godzilla: King of the Monsters on Disc 2) is worthy of pride of place in any Godzilla fan's collection.

Since I'm determined to one day own both every Godzilla film I can get my hands on and the entire Criterion Collection... I'm actually torn on which bookshelf I should display it on.

though to be honest I don't remember the U.S. version ever commenting on Kong being possibly mutated from nuclear tests in the air or what not

I liked King Kong vs Godzilla as I saw it when I was young but in later life I have even more reason to like it. And that reason is Mie Hama. She is in You Only Live Twice which is a favourite James Bond film.

But as yet I am astonished, astonished I say !, to see that no one has said what their favourite Godzilla film is or what the worst Godzilla film is.

I would say that the worst is the 1998 Hollywood version. No nuclear fire breath ? Dozens of little Godzilla which rip off the velociraptors from Jurassic Park ? It does not get any worse than this and is rightly parodied in Godzilla Final Wars.

Best ? I am very fond of Destroy All Monsters and Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla. But I give it to the latter for King Caeser and his ears going up as he enters battle, Space Gorillas, a robot Godzilla, Godzilla bleeding and a two on one battle to the finish. I also saw it on release which give you an idea of my age.

Godzilla vs Megalon has the worst combat move ever seen but is so bad you need to see it. The film also has Gigan which is good.

My lists:

Best/Favourites:
1. Godzilla (1954)
2. Mothra vs. Godzilla (1964)
3. Invasion of Astro-Monster (1965)
4. Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (1974)
5. Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack (2001)
6.
Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster (1964)
7. Destroy All Monsters (1968)
8. Godzilla: Final Wars (2004)
9. Shin Godzilla (2016)
10. Godzilla X Mothra X Mechagodzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. (2003)

Honorable Mentions (Unranked, No Godzilla and/or Not Toho):
Rodan (1956)
Mothra (1961)
Rebirth of Mothra trilogy (1996, '97, & '98)
Pacific Rim (2013)
Godzilla (2014)

Favourite Kaiju:
1. Mothra
2. Godzilla
3. King Ghidorah
4. Mechagodzilla
5. Gigan

Basically, I like the movies where the Big G is a force of devastation much more than the ones where (s)he's a superhero. King Ghidorah and Gigan are just great fun to watch be so damn evil... Godzilla destroys, sure, but those two seem to take actual glee in their deeds. Ghidorah giggles for crissakes.

Yet, I've also got a major soft-spot for Mothra. The only daikaiju who could be always considered "the good guy."

By the way, given that I own every Godzilla film that's available to own on DVD, I went and double checked... No Godzilla movie was made in 1998. None. You hear me? It never happened.

ya know....I don't hate that movie. I don't really like it, but I just don't get the vitriol for it.

now Godzilla's Revenge....that one pissed me off. And when you make a 6 year old who loves all things Godzilla pissed off at a Godzilla movie....oh man, you done messed up.

To clarify are you also of the opinion that there is no sequel to a film called Highlander ?

Yes there was... It started Adrian Paul, ran for several seasons. Rumors of spin-offs and sequels abound, but none were ever made. None you hear me? None!
