Back then, Wanda hadn't undergone as much power creep, and so when Ultranna-as-Wanda claimed that she could sense a force field ahead, it was a hint that something was off, as her power set did not then include ESP.

EDIT: Come to think of it, bluffing about having senses that you don't is a well-respected Marvel tradition. Quite apart from the fact that most people historically didn't know that Daredevil was blind, Spidey once got the Human Torch to leave him alone because his 'spider underwater hearing' alerted him to a Fantastic Four distress signal.

The Enforcer- Ghost Rider & Spider-Woman Villain:
-The Enforcer is a CLASSIC Jobber, but his costume is surprisingly decent- the simple two-colour scheme is much more design-friendly than some of the garish monstrosities you'll see among the rest of the victims of the Scourge of the Underworld (apologies to Turner D. Century's legions of fans), and its metallic sheen makes it look pretty sharp. He might have been decent, but he got stuck with the "forgotten" books- Ghost Rider & Spider-Woman stuff was all he ever really got. He allies with Daredevil's foe The Gladiator in order to kill the Eel and steal his gear, and begins wielding a Disintegration Ray. His concept was kind of interesting eventually- a Gimmick Weapon User, but with an authentic PISTOL instead of a bow & arrow or juggling balls or something comic-booky. He then tries to take over his father's movie studios from a criminal gang, vaporizing their boss in the process. The original Ghost Rider is then able to defeat him, and Enforcer's miniaturized Disintegration Ring falls into the ocean.

-He recovers the Ring and allies with the Water Wizard against Ghost Rider, but again loses- GR is depowered and tied to a motorcycle, which is then dumped off a cliff, but he survives and beats both villains. After this, he shifts to other rogues galleries- he threatens Werewolf By Night and Spider-Woman, losing again, and giving his name as Carson Collier instead of Charles Delazny, as in the GR appearances. He poisons an associated of Spider-Woman's, and forces her to work with him on a variety of heists in order to get the antitode- finally, he admits it was all a ruse and he HAD no antidote, so she ruined her reputation over nothing... then he just turns himself in like a complete dick, denying her even the satisfaction of capturing him! Okay, that's pretty amazing.

The Enforcer Dies:
-Later escaping prison, he is hired by some gamblers to fix a race between Johnny Blaze & Flagg Fargo, shooting Flagg and stealing a ton of money from the joint- he is driven into the lake in his exit, and avoids capture. Later, Madame Masque hires him to kill the criminal known as Termite, but on the mission, the Enforcer suffers the most ignoble of fates- he becomes the first criminal to be killed by the Scourge of the Underworld. This ongoing story-arc leads through many titles and ends in Captain America, with Cap capturing "Scourge", who reveals that he kills criminals over a family shame- he is the YOUNGER BROTHER of the Enforcer, and killed him and other villains in retaliation for embarassing the family. Gruenwald later came to regret wiping guys like him and the other Scourge victims out- at least SOME of them could have potentially been saved. However... it's probably 100 times more likely that they'd just become Background Jobbers, as the '90s didn't use many classic Jobbers, and the 2000s turned them into The Hood's goons. A second Enforcer, named Mike Nero (the nephew of the first), debuted during Dark Reign being written by Frank Tieri, and he had some Magic Weapons and befuddled the Hood & the Wrecking Crew. He has yet to reappear. And curiously, despite a Punisher arc resurrecting most of Scourge's victims, the Enforcer was not included among these- Death Adder, Letha, the first Titania, and TURNER D. CENTURY all got reborn, but THE ENFORCER? Nope.

-The best thing about him, though? THIS: That's right- an ENORMOUS debate on the Official Handbook website has sprung up regarding the real identity of this loser gimmick, all based off of some continuity errors (two different writers using two different real names for the guy) and bad writing. I love the internet for stuff like this- people spending hours upon hours trying to explain what's going on, to the point where there's like TWO PAGES OF TEXT on this one guy and a minor screw-up in character names.

The Enforcer's Capabilities:
-The Enforcer is a PL 8 all-around, packing half-decent accuracy and a Gun with some funny add-ons that make it a Device rather than Equipment (since it's gimmick-defining for him). He does little damage like most "Gun Guys" (Guns just aren't that dangerous to superhumans in the comics, really- Scourge is an exception). He could tangle with '70s-era Ghost Rider & Spider-Woman, who were both rookie heroes, but someone in the PL 10 weight class would make mincemeat out of him. His Protection is okay- +6 isn't bad for a human-level guy, but someone like Scourge just ate right through it. His weapons are more interesting- a Blast, an Incendiary dart that allows him to make a post-hypnotic suggestion that allows him to make people WILL THEMSELVES AFLAME (I guess that's Affliction- Compelled and a Blast), a Fire Burst, and a dart that Blinds people.

-Note that Enforcer carted around a Disintegration Ring in his early appearances which was INSANELY powerful, probably making him a PL 10 guy or worse- he apparently disintegrated a DESTROYER (ie. one of the giant freaking ships) with it.

My gut feeling is that Claremont felt that Marvel was doing him a disservice. When Lev Wein took over the X-Men back in the day, nobody wanted to touch that series with a three meters pole and they were quite right. Neither Stan Lee, nor Roy Thomas were ever able to make the X-Men work, so what chances did anyone else have. The total makeover done by Wein was a massive shot in the arm, then Claremont (at that time, Wein's right-hand man, usually relegated to secondary stuff) turned the series into the hottest title of Marvel for almost a decade. For all intent and purposes, he and Wein had rebuilt the entire series from scratch. This, paired with Claremont notoriously long-winded plots, meant that he was a crazy micro-manager. Apparently, when Loiuse Simmonson pitched the idea to reunite the original X-Men team, Claremont objected that he needed all those characters exactly where they were (i.e. Scott in Alaska with Maddie Pryor, Beast in Manhattan moonlighting with the Avengers, Jean dead and buried, etc.) and the answer was something along the lines of "these aren't your characters, Chris". I don't know if this was the moment that started the downward spiral, but since Wheezie pretty much undid the ending of the Dark Phoenix Saga, something that Claremont already fought over with Byrne... I can imagine how angry he was.
If you've read Marvel Comics: The Untold Story, Claremont was pretty consistently asked "he, we need a new X-Book" and he'd sigh and do it, because he was (rightly) proprietary over his own characters. So he was doing all sorts of books at one point. And yeah, he HATED Scott un-retiring, especially how they did it. They did a huge disservice to Madelyne Pryor, so he first tried to fix it (turning her into an X-buddy and tagalong), then made her evil and killed her off.

When Marvel finally nixed his planned Wolverine story (where he becomes a Hand agent for years), and they were favoring his artists too much, he bailed. And I think that was likely the end result of YEARS of this kind of sentiment.

Frank Tieri & Antonio Fuso
First Appearance: Dark Reign- Made Men #1 (Nov. 2009)
Role: One-Off Villain, Gun Guy
Group Affiliations: None

-The second Enforcer debuted almost twenty years after the original died- in 2009. Mike Nero is the nephew of the original Enforcer, and was trained to take over the "family business". He made a name for himself killing werewolves & vampires as a mercenary (which... was not the Enforcer's thing at all), and was hauled before The Hood over money he owed a loan shark allied with the man. He ended up using a bunch of stolen Aztec artifacts to make his escape, taunting The Hood on the way out, saying he was just getting started... and then he never appeared again.

ULTRANA
Created By:
Roy Thomas & Don Heck
First Appearance: The Avengers #36 (Jan. 1967)
Role: Forgotten Villain
Group Affiliations: The Ultroids, Sirians

-Ultrana was a female-looking Ultroid that was disguised as the Scarlet Witch, and sent to Americ a to lure the Avengers to Ixar's hideout in Transia. She had them fooled, but eventually slipped up when she declared a power that Wanda never had. A big-headed alien-looking lady, she also had her life force taken to empower Ixar's giant robot.
GREAT Ixar, Ultroids and Ultranna write-ups! Thanks for the profiles!

At the time, the Ultroids were probably the Avengers biggest threat and toughest foes. The Avengers would have lost without Black Widow.

OF NOTE: There were also some great moments such as seeing Wasp with her stingers and stinging Ixar as well as Black Widow using her electronic bite on an Ultroid which took it out. This was when the Twins powers declined for the first time and both were now more powerful than ever. Wanda showed increased power and a quicker recovery time between hexes, in addition to her first 2-arm hex which totally blocked Ixar's energy blast. We would not see Wanda do her familiar 2-hand hex until after the Arkon story, years in the future, which was the second time she lost power.

-Scotty McDowell was a wheelchair-bound criminologist who helped out Spider-Woman on her cases for a while, but was soon kidnapped by Karl Malus, who injected him with hornet DNA, turning him into a man-bug. This also made him an aggressive chauvinist, acting as a hero, but soon becoming evil and trying to kill Spider-Woman. Jessica, unwilling to hurt her friend, had a tough battle, but was able to flush the formula from Scotty's bloodstream. Scotty then revealed that his dislike towards her was real- he was in love with her, but felt that she didn't notice him. They didn't work together after that, and the character hasn't reappeared- he last showed up in 1983!

-As Superhero Supporting Cast Members go, he got off lucky. As a short-lived superhuman, he's only PL 8, but fairly well-balanced everywhere but his saves.

-I've mentioned before how the movie Smokey and the Bandit set off a big "Trucker" craze in America- specifically, the unique patter of "C/B Radio Talk" (though the fad had existed earlier, and the movie meant to take advantage of it, it made it EVEN LARGER). I mainly know this through Archie Comics set in the time period, as many teens start using funny lingo and cutesy nicknames while talking to each other (many comics also give the standard "Moral Lessons" about how you shouldn't clog the radios with useless stuff, as they're technically designed for communication during emergencies). Some aspects of this persist enough that modern shows will show some honor towards truckers (both The Simpsons and King of the Hill have done episodes where the characters, who idolize the job, become truckers), but for the most part, it's died out- truckers are now more-likely considered the bottom rung of the "job respectability" totem pole- effectively trashier versions of McJobs. The whole C/B thing seems kind of stupid to us today, but of course teens in the '70s didn't have the internet, video games or easy access to porn or anything, so there were way fewer options for fun. And it's not like our own habits are that much cooler (like, is perfecting GoldenEye on the N64 that much cooler to later generations as using dumb nicknames for your friends over C/B?).

-I mention this because U.S. Archer seems to come from the same mold, coming out six years after the original Smokey film (which was a HUGE smash hit, second only to Star Wars in 1977, and spawned three sequels). Ulysses S. Archer grew up better than his older brother Jefferson at everything, and Jefferson resented him for it. US became ultra-smart and graduated with many degrees (in addition to being a star quarterback), but still wanted to be a glorious trucker. Aliens recruited a bunch of truck drivers to become starship pilots (as you might imagine, this book made no attempt to be serious), and Jefferson was selected (they'd mistaken him for US, thinking all humans looked alike). Injured in a trucking accident with Jefferson's "Blackrig", US was fixed up by the aliens (who'd now realized their mistake), ending up with a metal skull plate that could pick up C/B transmissions.

-Building his truck, US-1, US became the rival of The Highwayman (actually Jefferson), and ended up in various races, dealing with aliens, and more. In the end, he beat Jefferson in a space race between their rigs, and he and his supporting cast were taken to space, his adopted parents' truck stop becoming "The Star Stop". His series was fairly self-contained, and lasted a hilariously-long TWELVE ISSUES given how silly it was, but his modern appearances are few and far between. He's appeared in a few She-Hulk arcs (John Byrne, at least, appreciated the silliness of the character), in Deadpool Team-Up (Wade annoys him by always chatting on the radio, to the point where he nearly joins the Highwayman trucking souls through hell just to avoid Wade), and as one of numerous jokey candidates for the babysitter of Luke & Jessica's baby in Avengers.

-U.S. Archer is a good Trucker and a solid fighter, but is strictly mid-tier as a bad-ass compared to major comic book characters.

-U.S. Archer's brother and arch-nemesis, Jefferson invents the story of being a demonic "Highwayman" in order to scare people while he robs people all over the country. Resentful of his brother for both being better, and for Jefferson having to become a trucker in order to support the family (and US's academic career), he tries to beat, then kill, his little bro. In the end of the series, he crashed his "Blackrig" on the Moon, and his fate was left unknown. It was Jason Aaron, the mad genius writer of Scalped and Wolverine and the X-Men, who turned him into a demon in the pages of Ghost Rider, brilliantly copying his made-up origin into a REAL THING this time- Jefferson had made up stories about becoming a demon, but now literally WAS ONE, collecting heads to feed to demons in his new Blackrig, thus powering it. He smashed up Ghost Rider a couple of times, but GR soon overpowered him by getting through the rig's defenses, then burned both demon and truck. Jefferson would quickly reappear in Deadpool Team-Up, fighting U.S. Archer and ol' Wade.

-A pretty standard guy at first, The Highwayman was left in the dust by his little brother. As a Demon, he's now PL 7.5- enough to challenge a superhero while in his powerful vehicle (which has both sentience and Regeneration- unusual stuff for Equipment. I COULD just build it as a Minion, I SUPPOSE, but this way's easier), but he'll fall apart without it.

See, with the name, I was expecting some sort of Captain America/Hawkeye hybrid, shooting red (rocket/explosive), white (taser/flash-bang) and blue arrows (clouds of obscuring/sleep gas) at people. :)

-The Blood Brothers are minor villains from Jim Starlin's Iron Man run (yeah, the guy was so into cosmic stuff that he essentially made his one big solo book a cavalcade of these types of alien characters like the Bros, Drax & Thanos, ignoring Tony Stark's "powersuit guy" tendencies and villains), being blood-drinking aliens in Thanos' employ who brawled with a few Marvel heroes, generally not making much of a dent. Their primary schtick was that they were a super-strong duo, usually brawling with pairs of heroes in high-tier group fights, but had a need for the presence of the other brother- separating them was often the key to their defeat. In their debut, the beat Iron Man and take him to Thanos, but Iron Man & Drax fight their way free and the Bros are nearly killed when Thanos detonates his base. They reappear under his command when he grabs the Cosmic Cube, but Iron Man now teams up with the Thing, taking out the Bros again. This is largely the end of their run as agents of Thanos- he moves on to generic minions and grander schemes, and they enter the ranks of the great "Journeyman Villains".

-Next, the Brothers are working with the Controller, fighting Iron Man & Daredevil and losing. Later, they are teleported into a fight with the Avengers, Thanos's brother Eros depowering them. They are exiled to Mars by Quasar, and largely disappear during the '90s save for a one-off in Maximum Security, where they help Earth's heroes fight destruction against Ego the Living PLanet. They next showed up during the first portions of Annihilation, kicking around an Alaskan town with some other minor alien characters, acting like dumb red hicks, before they fought Drax. One of the Brothers died during the fight, leaving the other gimmick-less- he simply appears as part of the Hood's supervillain army in a ton of background scenes, never really doing anything. Later, in a Cosmic Crossover called Black Vortex, the remaining brother is shown wasting away without his brother's life force to sustain him, and is transformed by a guy named "Mister Knife" into Brother Blood- a more powerful form. Knife inducts him into "The Slaughter Lords", a band of guys changed by proximity to the Black Vortex... and then of course someone forgets that one of the brothers is supposed to be dead, and so they appear in Pleasant Hill as part of a super-prison on Earth. Sam "Cap" Wilson & Winter Soldier manage to defeat them in that story, and later they appear as part of the Grandmaster's new Lethal Legion against The Challenger.

-So ultimately, these guys are just a pair of goons with a gimmick- it's a simple, unpretentious, fun gimmick at least, and the baddies just kinda fought Iron Man off and on for a couple of years until they got kind of forgotten. The "someone forgot one of them was dead" thing is just so hilariously comic books, though.

-The Brothers are tough as nails at first, being slightly more focused towards power & toughness than combat skills, but not overly much. They're under-pointed by 30 points, and only PL 9.5 altogether, so they're not very well-rounded, but when combined, they're a match for guys like Iron Man or The Thing pretty easily. Their big weakness is being separated- it takes a fairly big distance to make them weaker, but if you knock one a mile away, the other's going to get SERIOUSLY weakened, often below normal human starting abilities. As weaknesses go, it's a pretty big one. They also have ranks in "Intergalactic Criminals", giving them knowledge on how to commit crimes in space, as well as some knowledge of alien races and worlds. Many Earth Criminals would have no clue of such things.

-A character named "Skinhead" reminds me of that time I went looking at random stuff on Wikipedia, and ended up on a page about skinheads, and about how THEY'RE TOTALLY NOT ALL ABOUT NAZIS YOU GUYS, going into huge detail about all the different groups of "skins" that shared shaved-heads in common, and little else. But I haven't seen real skinheads in forever.

-That said, of course a character named Skinhead is a Nazi. But in a weird bit of storytelling, Gerry Conway made him of Jewish ancestry (his father is a Rabbi) and a former Zionist who got radicalized at a rally by the Watchdogs (a Conservative group that leaned heavily towards anti-pornography and racism)- his origin may have something in common with Daniel Burros- a Grand Dragon of the Ku Klux Klan with Jewish ancestry. He held some racist rallies, but after a fight with Rocket Racer and Spider-Man, he got doused in some of Peter Parker's failed-webbing projects, and got turned into the mutated "Skinhead". He threatened Spidey & Racer much more-severely this time, as he was able to dissolve people's flesh with his touch (Spidey was wearing a full-body costume, and thus could resist it), but Spider-Man KO'd the human skeleton beneath all that flab, and ended the fight. Skinhead's only other appearance was against Monica Rambeau in her Limited Series (meant to keep DC from publishing any book titled Captain Marvel- Marvel HAS to publish a book by that name once every few years in order to keep the copywrite), where her and a group of others were able to find the good in him, and he emerged from the flesh-pile, willing to make a change in his life (though he was still unwilling to shake hands with a black woman).

-More of a pest than a serious threat, Skinhead is hard to hurt, but his power of course never affects any REAL character- just Mooks (Skinhead manages to kill his entire gang once he gains powers- in revenge for their leaving him against the heroes).

Nowadays, I'm sure seeing a guy with no skin so you can see the muscles underneath makes some people think of Attack on Titan. It does to me, at least.

-There were a whole lot of Doug Moench-related builds in my 2015 set of "Random Names Yet Statted" for some reason. Dude has created some eminently-forgettable Jobbers, that's for sure (Moench gave an interview saying that his editors banned him from using any of the "over-used" familiar Fantastic Four foes for one full year, necessitating new guys like Stygorr). Stygorr here is basically a goofy one-shot foe that threatened the FF when they were transporting the Baxter Building through space- a Negative Zone Warlord, he decided to attack them, and apparently gave a good accounting of himself until his Weakness came into play- the touching of solid matter while he was using his anti-matter blasts- and he was vaporized. That was one HELL of a big weakness.

-It's hard to extrapolate from such a one-shotter, so he's basically a Flying Blaster with a huge Achilles Heel.
