Welcome back to the Gym folks! We end the week with a double Feature,a look at one of the most widely known fighting styles the world over....at the personal request of L-Space,this is TAEKWONDO!
BRIEF WORLD HISTORY:
Taekwondo is a Korean martial art, characterised by its emphasis on head-height kicks, jumping and spinning kicks, and fast kicking techniques.Taekwondo was developed during the 1940s and 1950s by Korean martial artists with experience in martial arts such as karate, Chinese martial arts, and indigenous Korean martial arts traditions such as Taekkyeon, Subak, and Gwonbeop. The oldest governing body for taekwondo is the Korea Taekwondo Association (KTA), formed in 1959 through a collaborative effort by representatives from the nine original kwans, or martial arts schools, in Korea. The main international organisational bodies for taekwondo today are the International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF), founded by Choi Hong Hi in 1966, and the partnership of the Kukkiwon and World Taekwondo (WT, formerly WTF), founded in 1972 and 1973 respectively by the Korea Taekwondo Association. Gyeorugi ([kjʌɾuɡi]), a type of full-contact sparring, has been an Olympic event since 2000. The governing body for taekwondo in the Olympics and Paralympics is World Taekwondo. Beginning in 1945, shortly after the end of World War II, new martial arts schools called kwans were opened in Seoul. These schools were established by Korean martial artists with backgrounds in Japanese, Chinese and Korean martial arts. The umbrella term traditional taekwondo typically refers to the martial arts practiced by the kwans during the 1940s and 1950s, though in reality the term "taekwondo" had not yet been coined at that time, and indeed each Kwan was practicing its own unique style of martial art. During this time taekwondo was also adopted for use by the South Korean military, which increased its popularity among civilian martial arts schools. After witnessing a martial arts demonstration by the military in 1952, South Korean President Syngman Rhee urged that the martial arts styles of the kwans be merged. Beginning in 1955 the leaders of the kwans began discussing in earnest the possibility of creating a unified style of Korean martial arts. The name Tae Soo Do was used to describe this unified style. This name consists of the hanja 跆 tae "to stomp, trample", 手 su "hand" and 道 do "way, discipline".

THE STYLES OF TAEKWONDO:
Primary Styles
There are a number of major taekwondo styles as well as a few niche styles. Most styles are associated with a governing body or federation that defines the style. The major technical differences among taekwondo styles and organizations generally revolve around:

Traditional taekwondo
The term traditional taekwondo typically refers to martial arts practised in Korea during the 1940s and 1950s by the nine original kwans, or martial arts schools, after the conclusion of the Japanese occupation of Korea at the end of World War II. The term taekwondo had not yet been coined, and in reality, each of the nine original kwans practised its own style of martial arts. The entire major cast of Best of The Best were practioners of the Classic style,Agent 47 from The Hitman series of video games is quite proficient in the classic style.

Chang Hon-style taekwondo
In 1990, the Global Taekwondo Federation (GTF) split from the ITF due to the political controversies surrounding the ITF; the GTF continues to practice ITF-style taekwondo, however, with additional elements incorporated into the style. Likewise, the ITF itself split in 2001 and again in 2002 into three separate federations, headquartered in Austria, the United Kingdom, and Spain respectively. The GTF and all three ITFs practice Choi's ITF-style taekwondo. In ITF-style taekwondo, the word used for "forms" is teul; the specific set of teul used by the ITF is called Chang Hon. Choi defined 24 Chang Hon teul. The names and symbolism of the Chang Hon teul refer to elements of Korean history, culture and religious philosophy. The GTF-variant of ITF practices an additional six teul.Sonya Blade from Mortal Kombat and Snake Plissken from John Carpenter's Escape from New York/LA are practioners of this version.

Songahm-style taekwondo
In 1969, Haeng Ung Lee, a former taekwondo instructor in the South Korean military, relocated to Omaha, Nebraska and established a chain of martial arts schools in the United States under the banner of the American Taekwondo Association (ATA). Like Jhoon Rhee Taekwondo, ATA taekwondo has its roots in traditional taekwondo. The style of taekwondo practised by the ATA is called Songahm taekwondo. The ATA went on to become one of the largest chains of taekwondo schools in the United States. The ATA established international spin-offs called the Songahm Taekwondo Federation (STF) and the World Traditional Taekwondo Union (WTTU) to promote the practice of Songahm taekwondo internationally. In 2015, all the spin-offs were reunited under the umbrella of ATA International.Juri from Street Fighter and Morpheus from the Matrix series use this style of Taekwondo.

Jhoon Rhee-style taekwondo
In 1962 Jhoon Rhee relocated to the United States and established a chain of martial arts schools primarily in the Washington, D.C. area that practised traditional taekwondo. In the 1970s, at the urging of Choi Hong Hi, Rhee adopted ITF-style taekwondo within his chain of schools, but like the GTF later departed from the ITF due to the political controversies surrounding Choi and the ITF. Rhee went on to develop his own style of taekwondo called Jhoon Rhee-style taekwondo, incorporating elements of both traditional and ITF-style taekwondo as well as original elements. (Note that Jhoon Rhee-style taekwondo is distinct from the similarly named Rhee Taekwon-Do, based in Australia and New Zealand).Black Canary from DC Comics and Ada Wong from Resident Evil use this style, though Canary is technically more Proficient.

Kukki-style / WT-taekwondo
Relative popularity of Kukkiwon-style taekwondo around the world In 1972 the Korea Taekwondo Association (KTA) Central Dojang opened in Seoul; in 1973 the name was changed to Kukkiwon. Under the sponsorship of the South Korean government's Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism the Kukkiwon became the new national academy for taekwondo, thereby establishing a new "unified" style of taekwondo. In 1973 the KTA established the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF, now called World Taekwondo, WT) to promote taekwondo as a sport. The International Olympic Committee recognized the WT and taekwondo sparring in 1980. For this reason, the Kukkiwon-defined style of taekwondo is sometimes referred to as Sport-style taekwondo, Olympic-style taekwondo, or WT-style taekwondo, but the style itself is defined by the Kukkiwon, not by the WT, and the WT competition ruleset itself only allows the use of a very small number of the total number of techniques included in the style. Therefore, the correct term for the South Korean government sponsored style of Taekwondo associated with the Kukkiwon, is Kukki Taekwondo, meaning "national taekwondo" in Korean. In Kukki-style taekwondo, the word used for "forms" is poomsae. In 1967 the KTA established a new set of forms called the Palgwae poomse, named after the eight trigrams of the I Ching. In 1971 however (after additional kwans had joined the KTA), the KTA and Kukkiwon adopted a new set of color-belt forms instead, called the Taegeuk poomsae. Black belt forms are called yudanja poomsae. While ITF-style forms refer to key elements of Korean history, Kukki-style forms refer instead to elements of sino-Korean philosophy such as the I Ching and the taegeuk.
Hwoarang from Tekken and, strangely enough Oddjob from the James Bond film Goldfinger is suprisingly porficient in this style of Taekwondo.

Fighting Style Advantages
All-out Attack=Trade active defense for attack bonus.
Combat Note:When you make an all-out attack, you can take a penalty of up to –5 on your active defenses (Dodge and Parry) and add the same number (up to +5) to your attack bonus.

Defensive Roll=+1 active defense bonus to Toughness per rank.
Combat Note:You can avoid damage through agility and “rolling” with an attack. You receive a bonus to your Toughness equal to your advantage rank, but it is considered an active defense similar to Dodge and Parry, so you lose this bonus whenever you are vulnerable or defenseless. Your total Toughness, including this advantage, is still limited by power level. This advantage is common for heroes who lack either superhuman speed or toughness, relying on their agility and training to avoid harm.

Improved Defense=+2 bonus to active defense when you take the defend action.
Combat Note:When you take the defend action in combat you gain a +2 circumstance bonus to your active defense checks for the round.

Power Attack=Trade attack bonus for effect bonus.
Combat Note:When you make a power attack, you can take a penalty of up to –5 on your attack bonus and add the same number (up to +5) to the effect bonus of your attack.

Takedown=Free extra attack when you incapacitate a minion.
Combat Note:If you render a minion incapacitated with an attack, you get an immediate extra attack as a free action against another
minion within range and adjacent to the previous target’s location. The extra attack is with the same attack and bonus as the first. You can continue using this advantage until you miss or there are no more minions within range of your attack or your last target. A second rank in this advantage allows you to attack nonadjacent minion targets, moving between attacks if necessary to do so. You cannot move more than your total speed in the round, regardless of the number of attacks you make. You stop attacking once you miss, run out of movement, or there are no more minions within range of your attack.

Languages(Korean)=Speak and understand additional languages.
Combat Note:You can speak and understand additional languages. With one rank in this advantage, you know an additional language. For each additional rank, you double your additional known languages: two at rank 2, four at rank 3, eight at rank 4, etc. So a character with Languages 7 is fluent in 64 languages! Characters are assumed to be fluent in any languages they know, including being able to read and write in them.
Total Point Cost= 6 power point for the Base style listed.

SPECIALIZING THE STYLE:
you want to branch your PC out from "White Belt",here's how....
Traditional taekwondo
this is the sterotypical Taekwondo "Major Baddie/Main Henchman" you see in all those Hong Kong Action Movies. The Dude that comes in Feet&Elbows flying into a group of Mooks, heedless of the danger....
Interpose=Take an attack meant for an ally.
Combat Note:Once per round, when an ally within range of your normal movement is hit by an attack, you can choose to place yourself between the attacker and your ally as a reaction, making you the target of the attack instead. The attack hits you rather than your ally, and you suffer the effects normally. You cannot use this advantage against area effects or perception range attacks, only those requiring an attack check.-These folks are the "Noble Heroes" that like to sacrifice themselves a lot for some reason...
Defensive Roll(4)=+1 active defense bonus to Toughness per rank.
This advantage is common for heroes who lack either superhuman speed or toughness, relying on their agility and training to avoid harm.-but with a high enough Defense Roll,it doesn't matter much...
Total Point Cost= 11 power point for the style listed(with add on's).

Chang Hon-style taekwondo
This is the version used by most of The U.S.Military,so they tend to end the fight as fast as possible...
Takedown(2)=Free extra attack when you incapacitate a minion.
-the ultimate form for "Mook Sweeping",these guys are some of the quickest Taekwondo practioners on the planet...
Seize Initiative=Spend a hero point to go first in the initiative order.
Combat Note:You can spend a hero point to automatically go first in the initiative order. You may only do so at the start of combat, when you would normally make your initiative check. If more than one character uses this advantage, they all make initiative checks normally and act in order of their initiative result, followed by all the other characters who do not have this advantage.-and it shows,as they'll be first in (almost) every combat engagement their ever in...
Improved Critical(Varies)=+1 to critical threat range with an attack per rank.
Combat Note:Increase your critical threat range with a particular attack (chosen when you acquire this advantage) by 1, allowing you to score a critical hit on a natural 19 or 20. Only a natural 20 is an automatic hit, however, and an attack that misses is not a critical. Each additional rank applies to a different attack or increases your threat range with an existing attack by one more, to a maximum threat range of 16-20 with 4 ranks.-Depending on where they got their training, they usually get to choose a "Weapon Kata" to go with the style...
Total Point Cost= 10 power point for the style listed(with add on's).

Songahm-style taekwondo
these dudes like to show-off,demonstrating their "Awesomeness" to the world.this is also the most easily accessable one, with Schools that litter the U.S. like discarded Trash at a Carnival...
Prone Fighting=No penalties for fighting while prone.
Combat Note:You suffer no circumstance penalty to attack checks for being prone, and adjacent opponents do not gain the usual circumstance bonus for close attacks against you.-Even if their knocked down, they like to give you a Kick as a parting gift...
Instant Up=Stand from prone as a free action.
Combat Note:You can go from prone to standing as a free action without the need for an Acrobatics skill check-again,these guys like to show-offand nothing says "Show-Off" better than Kipping up after being knocked down...
Taunt=Use Deception to demoralize in combat.
Combat Note:You can demoralize an opponent with Deception rather than Intimidation, disparaging and undermining confidence rather than threatening. Targets resist using Deception, Insight, or Will defense.-Nothing show-off better than by Throwing some Trash talk you opponents way..
Total Point Cost= 9 power point for the style listed(with add-on's).

Jhoon Rhee-style taekwondo
This one is more about speed than anything else, wanting the fight done as fast as possible...
Accurate Attack=Trade effect DC for attack bonus.
Combat Note:When you make an accurate attack you can take a penalty of up to –5 on the effect modifier of the attack and add the same number (up to +5) to your attack bonus.-they don't really care 'bout the effects,as long as they hit...
Improved Critical(Unarmed 2)=+1 to critical threat range with an attack per rank.
Combat Note:Increase your critical threat range with a particular attack(chosen when you acquire this advantage) by 1, allowing you to score a critical hit on a natural 19 or 20. Only a natural 20 is an automatic hit, however, and an attack that misses is not a critical. Each additional rank applies to a different attack or increases your threat range with an existing attack by one more, to a maximum threat range of 16-20 with 4 ranks.-Cause when they do,it's gonna hurt a lot.
Total Point Cost= 9 power point for the style listed(with add-on's).

Kukki-style / WT-taekwondo
this is the most meditative, introspective of the styles, based on the 8 trigrams of the I Ching. This one has the most non-combat Advantages on the list...
Well-Informed=Immediate Investigation or Persuasion check to know something.
Combat Note:You are exceptionally well-informed. When encountering an individual, group, or organization for the first time, you can make an immediate Investigation or Persuasion skill check to see if your character has heard something about the subject. Use the guidelines for gathering information in the Investigation skill description to determine the level of information you gain. You receive only one check per subject upon first encountering them, although the GM may allow another upon encountering the subject again once significant time has passed-again,all this comes down to is that "Knowledge is Power" motto...
Contacts=Make an initial Investigation check in one minute.
Combat Note:You have such extensive and well-informed contacts you can make an Investigation check to gather information in only one minute, assuming you have some means of getting in touch with your contacts. Further Investigation checks to gather information on the same subject require the normal length of time, since you must go beyond your immediate network of contacts.-Knowledge is Power to these people, and the more information they have, the better to them...
Agile Feint=Feint using Acrobatics skill or movement speed(recomend Movement Speed).
Combat Note:You can use your Acrobatics bonus or movement speed rank in place of Deception to feint and trick in combat as if your skill bonus or speed rank were your Deception bonus. Your opponent opposes the attempt with Acrobatics or Insight (whichever is better).-Never underestimate the power of a hand twitch...
Eidetic Memory=Total recall, +5 circumstance bonus to remember things.
Combat Note:You have perfect recall of everything you’ve experienced. You have a +5 circumstance bonus on checks to remember things, including resistance checks against effects that alter or erase memories. You can also make Expertise skill checks to answer questions and provide information as if you were trained, meaning you can answer questions involving difficult or obscure knowledge even without ranks in the skill, due to the sheer amount of trivia you have picked up.-to these people, knowledge is power&the Brain is the Powerful thing in the world...
Assessment=Use Insight to learn an opponent’s combat capabilities.
Combat Note:You’re able to quickly size up an opponent’s combat capabilities. Choose a target you can accurately perceive and have the GM make a secret Insight check for you as a free action, opposed by the target’s Deception check result. If you win, the GM tells you the target’s attack and defense bonuses relative to yours (lower, higher, or equal). With each additional degree of success, you learn one of the target’s bonuses exactly. If you lose the opposed roll, you don’t find out anything. With more than one degree of failure, the GM may lie or otherwise exaggerate the target’s bonuses.-these folks like to know what their getting into before a fight...
Total Point Cost= 11 power point for the style listed(with add-on's).

And there you have it,my Take on Taekwondo,as per the request of L-Space.If anbody has any more request. let me know&i'll do what i can...Enjoy! :D :D

What about the art seen here? I believe it may be related to taekwondo, given the similar name.

Indeed it would.

I mean, it’s obviously benefiting from being perfectly choreographed, expertly timed, and always having just the right weapon in reach... But that’s true of all cinematic martial arts. Just as a Bruce Lee film is a great example of kung fu or jeet kun do, or a Chuck Norris film is a great example of karate, or the Rocky films (esp. the first film and Rocky Balboa) are great examples of boxing.

There’s precious few films that get sword-fighting right though. Most cinematic sword-fights are very, very, very silly if you know even a little about any sword-based martial art. When you know a lot about a particular style and see it depicted in film it can be downright hilarious. Or infuriating.

If you want a good example of "Classic Hollywood" Sword-Fighting,watch either the Montoya/Wesley fight in The Princess Bride or the Bandaras/Hopkins version of The Mark Of Zoro(which goes into depth about the Spanish version of Fencing).

I have done Spanish rapier and historical European martial arts German Longsword, scottish Dirk and topically, Cane. (Not walking stick cane. These were rattan canes, like 3/4 length a walking cane, but the style originated in England to my recollection).

Also dusack. But seriously, fuck dusack. I do not care for that weapon.

As much as I love those movies, the swordplay in both is pretty bad. Pirate halves and Flynning make up most of the repertoires of all the fighters... Elwes and Patinkin are so damn charismatic that combined with the hilarious (and accurate) dialogue and the clever choreography, it’s really easy to overlook that their swordplay is kinda silly.

The Princess Bride is high on my list of movies where Hollywood’s bad sword-play is done well. Pirates of the Carribean, Kingdom of Heaven, The Last Jedi, and Master and Commander are also good examples.

My favorite cinematic sword fights are in The Duelists (Here, Here, and Here), Rob Roy (Here and Here), and the phenomenal duel in the rain from Polish film Potop (Here).
