Solo: A Star Wars movie
Solo: A Star Wars movie
So I just got finished watching this movie with my dad, and we both really liked the film. I wouldn't put it on par with the original trilogy, but I'd say it's around "Rogue One" level of good, which I consider better than the Prequels, Force Awakens, and WAY better than that . . . other movie. Not sure why there's any controversy regarding it, or why it wouldn't be doing well, other than The Last . . . Star Wars movie kind of souring people on the franchise. Hopefully word of mouth will be good and it'll get more of an audience, because I'd love to see more Star Wars side-stories.

I really enjoyed it. It was cool seeing another side of the Star Wars universe. Han's and Chewie's partnership/friendship was handled really well. And man Donald Glover absolutely nailed it as Lando, the first time I heard him talk I could have sworn it was Bill Dee Williams dubbed over him.Ares wrote: ↑Wed May 30, 2018 11:59 pm So I just got finished watching this movie with my dad, and we both really liked the film. I was also stoked to see Chewbacca in action, never fight a Wookiee in melee...

Re: Solo: A Star Wars movie
My only complaint is that it checked off pretty much everything we ever had heard of Han Solo prior to A New Hope, and crammed it into about a week in basically one long chain of events. In that sense, it felt more like a superhero origin story, and less like a story about a person with many life experiences.
It wasn't bad by any stretch. I just would have preferred it if there had been more time covered.
I do have to say that whomever had the job of making sure Alden Ehrenreich's hair was the same colour that Harrison Ford's was back in the 1970s.... they did a wonderful job. They had excellent Han-dye coordination.

Because of course some idiot has to think that. And I warn you, that article is concentrated poison.

Re: Solo: A Star Wars movie
Having seen it myself, I have to ask... How can anyone tell what the hell happened in that film? The cinematography was terrible, shadows and darkness abound. And really, what did we get from this that we haven't heard of before?
How could they make the most roguish starship captain so BORING??? And Glover got the inflections right, but he was no Lando. And I thought Lando and Han were the same age, so how the hell did Lando get old enough to retire when Han didn't?
And why didn't they name the move 'The Qira' show? Because quite frankly, there was more to her than to Han.
3/10, and only because I assume there was some good stuff under the gloom.

Sometimes retirement isn't about age. Sometimes it's about wealth or wanting to change careers.

Billy Dee Williams is five years older than Harrison Ford; Donald Glover is six years older than Alden Ehrenreich. Give or take a few months.

To a racist, everything is about race. I don't believe that race had anything to do with 99.98% of decisions whether or not to see this movie, or any movie. It's just not that important to me, or to most people. To the man who wrote this article, there is nothing more important.Ares wrote: ↑Thu May 31, 2018 7:40 pm Solo: A Star Wars Movie - Are movies about white men box office poison?

Re: Solo: A Star Wars movie
Right. How many crime stories are about young crooks wanting to pull "That one big score" that will set them up for life and be able to retire?
Though it was also implied that the reason for his "retirement" was that his ship had actually been impounded and he couldn't leave, hence the need for Han's crew to break the ship out and escape.

Re: Solo: A Star Wars movie
Apparently both Lando and Han had growth spurts after Solo, as they were both only 5'9" tall in Solo, and 6' and 6'1" respectively in Empire.

Colt 45 is full of healthy grains like barley, malt, and hops. Clearly, this helped Han and Lando gain those extra inches and retain their youthful vigor.

Re: Solo: A Star Wars movie
I think Rogue One was better, but I enjoyed it a lot still. Kinda wanted them to make a bigger deal of Han saving Chewie's life and the hole "life debt" thing. L3 was fun. Han shoots first, as it should be.
Had my own "adventure" in order to see it, since I had a ticket for the premiere in a big theater in another city...during a day in which a massive strike by truckers left Brazil paralyzed with gas running out. Luckily, we managed to fill the tank on the car we were sharing for the ride and everything worked out. The session had a bunch of seats empty, though, presumably because people couldn't get there (since the tickets all sold ridiculously fast as soon as they became available, I assume the session would normally be packed as usual).

Re: Solo: A Star Wars movie
I still think that the best version was The Hutt Gambit.
Re: Solo: A Star Wars movie
Honestly, I'd love to see them make a film out of the novel Scoundrels , written by Timothy Zahn (yes, Thrawn/Mara Jade creator Timothy Zahn), which is basically an Ocean's 11 style heist in the Star Wars setting. It's awesome.

Re: Solo: A Star Wars movie
The dumbest critique I've heard of Solo was that it was a "movie nobody asked for". That the idea is that people wouldn't support a Han Solo film that explores the origins of the character, how he got to where he was, etc. And that just comes off as utter nonsense to me.
To me, the primary reasons Solo isn't doing well is because:
1) Disney's poor (ie, virtually non-existant) advertising campaign.
2) Disney releasing the movie so close to Avengers: Infinity War and Deadpool.
3) Disney releasing another Star Wars movie less than 6 months after The Last Jedi, meaning we've had roughly 4 Star Wars movies in a little under two years, meaning Star Wars is losing any kind of "Special" feeling it once had.
4) Disney made "The Last Jedi" which pissed off the majority of fans.
