Okay, this is as a poster (my Mod voice is not "on" right now), but that comes off as a mix of passive aggressive and condescending, which we can do without. Lets leave feeling sorry for someone for when they're in a position that justifies sympathy and not as a way to basically insult them for not taking away something from a film that you did.
My apologies.

I liked this movie a lot more than I expected to. Loved Michael Keaton in it, which I did expect. It wasn't a perfect movie by any means, and I miss the spider-sense, but in a way, this is the movie I was hoping to get from Iron Man 3: some follow-up on the alien invasion in one of the biggest cities in the world.

Also, Michelle J was fantastic. She's exactly the charming weirdo I want Mary Jane to be, even if she doesn't have any interest in acting.

What? Michelle Jones was a weirdo, maybe, but charming? She was smug and off-putting. Deliberately so.

Mary Jane's character is a socialite, gregarious, deliberately shallow, but with hidden depths. Michelle Jones was a Weird Kid even by the standards of other Weird Kids. The two have nothing in common except initials and interest in Peter Parker.

If you like the character, that's well and good, but don't pretend that she's Mary Jane. She's just not.

I understood the change for MJ from the supposed flighty party girl not caring about anyone or thing to the apathetic teen with no apparent care for anyone except Peter. I can wrap my head around why they wanted to change things up but it just felt wrong.
I am a old purists when it comes to my comic more but what they did with the MJ character did not upset me as much as say Hydra Cap or Unworthy Thor...

It's weird. I don't exactly disagree with anything you said, but... she still feels more like Mary Jane to me than Kirsten Dunst's character ever did. It's hard to put my finger on, but a big part of it is probably that the movie had a primary, idealized love interest, and then this other girl off to the side who got along with Peter but was doing her own thing and could honestly take him or leave him.

"Is she a decent Mary Jane" and "Is she a better Mary Jane than Kirsten Dunst's take on the character" are two entirely different questions. The first question can be "no" while the second question is still an emphatic "yes." Dunst is horrible, and the hoops the writers jumped through to make Mary Jane Pete's primary love interest while skipping the Gwen situation created endless distance from the actual character.

I, personally, don't see any noticeable similarity between this Michelle Jones character and any version of Mary Jane, and haven't seen anyone draw any form of real parallel between the two. I see the use of the "MJ" initials as an indicator that this new character will fill the love interest role going forward, bypassing the tangled web of 616 Spidey's romantic history entirely, and that's okay... but this character is very definitely not similar to the other one.

I liked how for once, Spider-Man wasn't treated as a Hero with Bad Publicity.

And if people were complaining about him at all, it wasn't as a threat or a menace, it was as a dumbass.

There's a new tack for Jameson to take.

I can actually see Jonah suggesting that and having to be talked down by Robbie.

A thing that struck me as a disappointment for this movie was Spider-Man not having much to do as Spider-Man early on in the film. He is just hanging around helping people carry their groceries while waiting for Tony Stark to call him. This contradicts the comics where a consistent theme is Peter Parker constantly being crazy busy. With all his personal responsibilities, his need to study and/or work and the hordes of crazy supervillains running around New York he rarely gets a chance to catch a breath.

I would have preferred it if they had depicted New York as inundated with low-level supercrooks. Spider-Man is known for his enormous (and largely animal-themed) rogues gallery. Peter's phone should have gone off with an alert from SHIELD before Iron Man was even out of sight. Spider-Man 2 did this right with Peter running himself to poverty and exhaustion trying to fight ALL the crime. Rather than pleading with Stark for something to do he should have been pleading for some help. I would also have thrown in a quick appearance by some other Marvel junior superhero such as Ms Marvel or Squirrel Girl to illustrate that Peter is not unique as Spider-Man, there are other up-and-coming supers out there.
