Your Favorite Crossovers - Film and Animation edition

Like I said over in this thread, I've always been a crossover junkie. Seeing heroes from different franchises interact was always just very cool to me, very special.

When it comes to movies, television and animation, you usually don't see as many crossovers as other media, but they can be magical when they happen.

I'm a fan of Kamen Rider and Super Sentai, and the first time they crossed those franchises over was just amazing. Two series with over 40 years of history teaming up was pulled of spectacularly, with every hero represented in some fashion. It's by far the largest gathering of live action superheroes ever, with over 100 Kamen Rider and Super Sentai heroes together on screen, facing an equally huge army of villains from both franchises. They literally had to use nearly all of the stunt men and women in Japan to pull it off, but you got a sense of the sheer scope and history of both franchises, and it was a thing of beauty.

And for myself, the first time we had all of the Avengers standing together in that pan-around shot just about turned me back into a 5 year old boy again. It's sad how DC was unable to replicate that when they had Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman all together.

So what are some of your favorite crossovers in television, film and animation? Why did you like them? What where your favorite moments? And what characters / franchises would you like to see crossover in the future?

I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for the first one I ever saw- Cartoon All-Stars To The Rescue! A preachy attempt to get kids to stop doing drugs, it featured the characters from about a dozen cartoons suddenly pop out to teach a kid about how wrong it is to smoke weed. It features Simon from The Chipmunks actually use the word "Marijuana", which still sounds bizarre, and then the Muppet Babies take the kid on a ride to show him how drugs create an endless cycle of further dependence. The only downer for me was Michaelangelo, my least-favorite Ninja Turtle, being the sole representative of his franchise, yanking the kid down a manhole to lecture him.

Though I'm not sure that the "do drugs and maybe your favorite cartoon characters will come to life and talk to you" lesson is a particularly good one, this crossover was a BIG, BIG DEAL to kids of my generation- where would you EVER see something like this again?

To be fair, seeing all of your favorite cartoon heroes coming alive and talking to you sounds EXACTLY like what someone might see on drugs.

But yeah, on the one hand, it was cool seeing all of those Saturday Morning characters appear together, a collection we're unlikely to ever see to that extent again, but it was likewise disappointing when I found out WHY they were getting together. "Wow! All of the Saturday Morning Cartoon characters are coming together! I wonder who the bad guy'll b . . . . wait, this is about drugs?"

But outside of those Cartoon Network shorts, you're unlikely to have such a diverse group of characters interacting at all anymore. I imagine the red tape involved in American Animation, not to mention time and effort, is a much bigger hassle than other media. Though the way Disney is buying up companies, it might not be long before such things are easier to pull off. Just look at all the video game characters they got to appear in Wreck-It Ralph, however briefly.

Though I do remember a couple of interesting attempts at such crossovers back in the day.

On USA, they had one Saturday Morning where this orb of power kept traveling from one dimension to the next, and was used by the villains of the show as a MacGuffin for the evil scheme of that week. There was also this fantasy hero who was following the orb to try and retrieve it, and you had to watch all of the 'action' shows of the time (Street Fighter, Savage Dragon, Mortal Kombat, and Wing Commander) in order to get the full story. Though hilariously, while the fantasy hero featured prominently in Street Fighter, Savage Dragon and Wing Commander, Mortal Kombat apparently decided they just wanted to use the orb in their episode. The only shot we get of the fantasy hero is right at the end of the episode, where a vague, shadowy figure jumps into the portal after the orb as Raiden sends it off somewhere else. It comes off as the fantasy hero going, "Fuck it, these MK guys are too weird even by my standards, I'mma just sit this one out and make a break for it the first chance I get".

Marvel did something interesting in the early 90s along the lines of a crossover. Much like the movies, Marvel had licensed their characters out to several different broadcasting companies. So you got things like the X-Men and Spider-Man appearing on Fox, the Incredible Hulk on BKN, Iron Man and the Fantastic Four over on . . . I'm not sure . . .

Regardless, despite those shows appearing on different networks, they actually managed to have kind of a stealth Marvel Animated Universe by having the characters often make one-episode cameos in other shows, and 90% of the time, they'd get the voice actors from one show to do the work on the other. So when Iron Man appeared in the Incredible Hulk and Spider-Man, he had the same voice and general look as his own series. In fact, the Hulk had appeared in Iron Man's own show, and the Hulk's series referenced that episode to display continuity between the series. It was kind of cool.

I'm with you on the Avengers movie being an awe-inspiring moment to me.

I was also big fan of the 90's Spider-man/X-men crossover episodes and the Spider-man Battleworld episode.

Yeah, I remember LOVING seeing the X-Men in the superior, Spider-Man animation style. I wanted them to re-do the X-Men series in that style immediately :).

I don't think I saw most of the movies in question, but the Kaiju stuff from the '50s & '60s was awesome to me as a kid. Godzilla meeting up with friggin' RODAN and MOTHRA? Now THAT was an epic team-up! Then when all of the other Kaiju gather together to fight King Ghidorah in the battle of the century? How is that NOT the greatest movie moment of all time?

Reading about Wolfman Meets Frankenstein in the school library back in the day was a great moment as well. I was like "movie characters that SHARE A UNIVERSE? AWESOME!!!"

When I was a child, I enjoyed Laff-A-Lympics, though, after awhile, the outcomes became predictable.

One thing I know would never happen, but that I'd love to see, would be a Marvel Cinematic Universe crossover with Kamen Rider.

I'm imagining the Kamen Rider squad operating on a MCU sized budget, and a scene similar to that one in Civil War where all of the heroes are charging at each other, but on one-side you've got the Kamen Rider crowd and on the other you've got all of the Marvel characters.

Captain America squares off against Kamen Rider 1 in a classic hand-to-hand match up.

Iron Man and KR Fourze have an intense aerial duel in the sky.

Thor swings a charged hammer that KR Kuuga meets with a Mighty Rider Kick.

Spider-Man dodges around as KR Double switches powers in an effort to keep up, both of them snarking at each other.

Dr. Strange and KR Wizard start slinging spells at each other, switching it up to magic weapons frequently.

Black Panther faces off against the save jungle KR Amazon.

Quicksilver and KR Kabuto have a battle at supersonic speeds.

Antman goes Giantman to fight the equally titanic Kamen Rider J.

The Falcon and Skyrider likewise spend their time flying around in an intense aerial dogfight.

So on and so forth. Be actually kind of fun to figure out an entire "Infinity War" level fight between every Marvel CU hero and as many Kamen Riders as we can fit in here.

Peter glances over to Tony. "How come I don't get a giant robot?"

Tony glances back. "You? How come I don't get a giant robot?!?!"

IIRC in the Spider-Man/X-Men crossover, despite having the same voice actors for some weird reason they used different sound effects for the X-Men's powers. I also remember the Ghost Rider, Thor and Thing appearances in the Hulk cartoon.

Other crossovers I remember
Ace Ventura and The Mask (animated)
TMNT and Power Rangers (live action)
Eureka, Warehouse 13 and Alphas.
Hawaii Five-0, NCIS LA and now MacGyver.
Las Vegas and Crossing Jordan
The Simpsons and Family Guy

I just found this, wow there are so many.

A HUGE amount of shows have tied into St. Elsewhere, as well, largely through cheeky cameos on the part of directors. Which means that a titanic swath of TV actually comes from the mind of an autistic child.

Also, John Munch is apparently some kind of dimension hopping Time Lord.

MCU (if that counts)

Universal monsters

Toho's kaiju

and the enormity of the horror movie crossover universe. It's mostly easter eggs.
