Babylon 5

Post by catsi563 »

So recently I decided to do a re-watch of all 5 seasons. Ive been watching little clips on you tube here and there. But finally decided to just do it and grabbed my dvds.

Ive gone through the first and second seasons and am on the third season.

This series is one of the BEST ever sci-fi series made. its combination of story telling plot and character development is quite frankly beyond compare. Even its weakest episodes and seasons still serve the greater meta-arc and overall story. JM Strazynksi did a truly epic job writing and gave us some of the most iconic moments in any series ever and some profound wisdom along the way.

Its depiction of space battles was also some truly amazing stuff. Given the 1990s tech used at the time for SFX, some might argue the SFX don't hold up but Id argue the opposite. the sfx are still solid and the alien makeups original and alien in appearance. We get some amazing set pieces all of which add into an already rich story.

Ill provide some episode recounts as I go and season overviews.

Let the discussion begin on our last best hope for peace.

Season 1: Signs and Portents

Best described by its opening narration given by Commander Jeffery Sinclair played by the late Michael Ohare.

It was the dawn of the third age of mankind – ten years after the Earth-Minbari War. The Babylon Project was a dream given form. Its goal: to prevent another war by creating a place where humans and aliens could work out their differences peacefully. It's a port of call – home away from home – for diplomats, hustlers, entrepreneurs, and wanderers. Humans and aliens wrapped in two million five hundred thousand tons of spinning metal… all alone in the night. It can be a dangerous place, but it's our last best hope for peace. This is the story of the last of the Babylon stations. The year is 2258. The name of the place is Babylon 5.

the first season is pretty much a filler season but it has many moments that if you're paying attention act exactly as the seasons title says. Little moments and actions that lead to the understanding that a much larger deeper story and narrative is ongoing. There is something big building in the galaxy and this place, this one lone space station is at the heart of it all, and the people on that station are more then mere players on the stage.

1
"Midnight on the Firing Line"
When the Narn attack a Centauri colony, Londo and G'Kar nearly come to blows. Meanwhile, raiders are attacking transport ships near the station.

2
"Soul Hunter"
A badly damaged ship is brought into the station, and the strange alien inside is identified as a Soul Hunter — an immortal race who can sense death and supposedly steal someone's soul.

3
"Born to the Purple"
Londo's career is in jeopardy when a beautiful slave seduces him and steals a sensitive computer file. Garibaldi investigates an unauthorized use of a restricted communications channel.

4
"Infection"
Dr. Franklin gets a visit from old friend and mentor, xenoarcheologist Dr. Hendricks. He wants Franklin's help to analyze hi-tech organic artifacts he found on a dead world. But the artifacts seem to have a will of their own, and start to manipulate Hendricks' assistant.

5
"The Parliament of Dreams"
Sinclair's old flame, Catherine Sakai, arrives during a weeklong festival when humans and aliens demonstrate their religious beliefs. An old enemy sends an assassin to kill G'Kar.

6
"Mind War"
A rogue telepath with exceptional powers takes refuge on Babylon 5, and two PSI Cops arrive to capture him. Catherine Sakai heads to Sigma 957 to survey it for Quantium-40, ignoring G'Kar's grave warnings.

7
"The War Prayer"
A racist group is terrorizing aliens on Babylon 5, stabbing and branding them. Meanwhile Londo has trouble with two young Centauri who want to break tradition by ignoring their arranged marriages, and instead marrying for love.

8
"And the Sky Full of Stars"
Sinclair is kidnapped and interrogated by two men determined to prove he betrayed Earth during the Battle of the Line.

9
"Deathwalker"
Na'Toth attacks an alien woman that has just arrived on the station, claiming that she is the Dilgar war criminal Jha'dur — known as Deathwalker. And Talia is hired by Kosh to oversee some rather strange negotiations.
1
10
"Believers"
An alien couple comes to Dr. Franklin with their terminally ill son. The child could be cured by a simple operation, but the parents' religion specifically forbids it. Meanwhile Ivanova escorts a damaged starliner through Raider territory.

11
"Survivors"
There is an explosion in one of the fighter bays just days before the president is to visit Babylon 5. A dying man implicates Garibaldi, which is just what the head of presidential security wants to hear, as she blames him for her father's death.

12
"By Any Means Necessary"
An accident in the docking bays starts a series of problems on Babylon 5, when a Narn freighter is destroyed and one of the workers is killed. The dock workers demand better conditions or they'll go on strike. And G'Kar has to get a replacement G'Quan-Eth plant for an important religious ceremony.

13
"Signs and Portents"
A Centauri noble comes to Babylon 5 to transport an important Centauri relic in Londo's possession back to the homeworld. And a mysterious man visits all the alien ambassadors asking them an unusual question.

14
"TKO"
Garibaldi is surprised when an old friend comes to Babylon 5 to fight in the mutai — a savage alien fighting arena. Meanwhile Ivanova has trouble dealing with her father's death.

15
"Grail"
A man comes to Babylon 5 asking the alien ambassadors for information that can help him with his quest to find the Holy Grail, while a Downbelow gangster gives security problems by mindwiping all who oppose him.

16
"Eyes"
Sinclair's decisions of the last year catch up with him, when an internal affairs investigator arrives to test the crew's loyalty to Earth Force with the help of a telepath. And Lennier shows great interest in Garibaldi's attempt at assembling a 1990s motorcycle.

17
"Legacies"
A Minbari war cruiser comes to Babylon 5 to display the body of a recently dead Minbari leader, while Ivanova and Talia battle for the fate of a young girl with newly discovered telepathic powers.

18
"A Voice in the Wilderness (Part 1)"
Strange signals start coming from Epsilon 3, the planet below Babylon 5. A science ship is sent to investigate, but is fired upon by a defense system on the planet. Meanwhile Garibaldi worries about a lover he left back on Mars, when fighting breaks out there.

19
"A Voice in the Wilderness (Part 2)"
The situation heats up when an Earth Force heavy cruiser arrives to "protect earth's interests", and the fusion reactors on Epsilon 3 start going out of control, and may blow up the planet and Babylon 5.

20
"Babylon Squared"
Babylon 4 reappears at the same place it disappeared four years earlier, and Sinclair and Garibaldi lead an expedition to evacuate its crew. Meanwhile Delenn is summoned by the Grey Council. They inform her that they have selected a new leader: her.

21
"The Quality of Mercy"
Dr. Franklin investigates an unlicensed medical practitioner in Downbelow, while Londo takes Lennier on a tour of Babylon 5's seedier locales. And in the brig, a convicted murderer waits for his sentence to be carried out — the death of personality.

22
"Chrysalis"
The Centauri and Narns quarrel about a Narn outpost in a quadrant adjacent to Centauri space, when Londo gets an offer to take care of the problem. Meanwhile, Garibaldi tries to find out what his informant stumbled upon that got him killed.

Some of the great moments in this first season

1: the introduction of the two characters who to me are the main characters Londo and G'kar. Yes two supporting character to me are the Main characters. These two character see the most growth over the 5 seasons of the show and the most development. they change drastically and we see this change happen over the course of the first season, as G'kar starts as a schemeing manipulator, and Londo a drunken fool who got the job as a joke on him.

Over the season though both characters change drastically as g'kar begins a change that will see him become a major spiritual figure, and Londo slowly begins a slide into darkness that can only have two outcomes, a fall into hell or a redemption into heaven.

2: The Vorlons and the existence of the first ones races ancient and older then anyone can guess and with vast technology that is beyond comprehending. We begin to understand they hold a greater part to play yet to come.

3: The coming of the Shadows. We see them first in episode 13 a dark alien race that we never see on screen except in a giant black ship of death that screeches in a way that we can never forget. Its only a small moment but it impacts the remaining episode in a way that cannot be dismissed.

4: the mysteries of the Minbari and Jeffrey Sinclair. What happened at the battle of the line? why did the Minbari surrender when victory was close at hand for them? We discover the answers to these questions along the way as Sinclair finds not only the answers but more questions as to his role and identity.

5: the stunning revelation of the spiritual leader known as The One.

6: What happened to Babylon 4? the stations predecessor vanished mysteriously and in the episode Babylon squared we find out what happened and why, we also meet Zathras and first find out more about the One.

7: In TKO we get a line where one of the characters a friend of Garibaldi tells Michael to "" Watch his back."" this is one of many prophetic moments where a word or comment or a moment presages the coming darkness and the shadow war. Including the rise of the Nightwatch, and the discovery of the alien healing machine, the discovery of the great machine on Epsilon 3 and many others.

8: the Prophecy of a seeress that says that Babylon 5 will be destroyed in fire.

The series concludes with the death of the earth alliance president, and Delenn in a state of metamorphosis. A state of change that is symbolic of the galaxy at large and how it is going to change drastically over the coming years.

Season 2

The Babylon Project was our last, best hope for peace. A self-contained world five miles long, located in neutral territory. A place of commerce and diplomacy for a quarter of a million humans and aliens. A shining beacon in space, all alone in the night. It was the dawn of the Third Age of Mankind… the year the Great War came upon us all. This is the story of the last of the Babylon stations. The year is 2259. The name of the place is Babylon 5.

— Captain John Sheridan (Bruce Boxleitner)

The second season of Babylon 5 kicks into high gear the overall mega arc the 1000 years war of the Shadows. Here in this season we see the signs and portents of the first season come into play as many disparate stories begin to converge on the 5 mile long station in neutral space. The shadows begin to move and worlds begin to go to war, Earth becomes more and more like a fascist dictatorship as the ministry of peace and the Night Watch exert more authority. Were introduced to John Sheridan who is a much more dynamic character then Sinclair and who right off the bat shakes up the status quo as hes revealed as Starkiller the minbari name for the only earth captain to destroy a minbari warship their flagship the blackstar.

We also get the return of Psi Cop bester played by Star Treks Walter Koenig who appeared in the first season and who makes regular appearances throughout the remaining seasons. Bester played brilliantly by Koenig would shake up and chew the scenery more then anyone save Gkar and Londo would.

Overall one of the best seasons as it takes the seeds planted in the first season and waters and feeds them to continue growing a brilliantly laid story as JMS shows off brilliant continuity even in the face of having to replace Sinclair (Michael Ohare who left for personal reasons) with Sheridan (bruce Boxleitner) Who grows from the leader of the station to the leader of an alliance that would shape the face of the galaxy.

Highlights of season 2

1: The Introduction of Sheridan to the command staff which upsets the Minbari as Sheridan killed their flagship the Black Star earning the Nickname Starkiller the only victory the Earth Alliance had in the entire war. Sinclairs departure to minbar as an ambassador and a furtherance of his story leading to his ascencion leave the opening for Sheridan to take over and we get a great scene of Sheridans guts and command style as he saves B5 froma rogue Minbari cruiser in the opening episode. His growth continues throughout the season and future seasons as Sheridan comes into his own as the leader of an Alliance of epic proportions.

2: The return of Lita Alexander who reveals a traitor in the B5 ranks which shakes the shows roster up in profound ways but none more so then when its finally revealed that she has a connection to the Vorlons more then anyone suspected after her scan in the opening movie.

3: The transformation of Delenn from Minbari to a human-Minbari hybrid in order to bring balance to her people. The change would drastically effect her character who while remaining enigmatic as any minbari would open her up to more human feelings and the stirrings of a relationship between her and Sheridan.

4: The Centauri Emperor Turan comes to B5 to make peace with the Narns while there he causes several characters to grow further with his actions, and has a revelation from Kosh that everything will end "in fire." His death leads further to Londos fall into darkness as Londo again gets more entwined with the shadows. and his misteps lead to war.

5: The arrival of 25000 troops from earth on route to a peace keeping action has profound effects as Several minor characters meet and interact with the command staff. Also the Stations weapons are upgraded with the latest tech to incredible levels making them the equal of a warship.

6: The Beginning of the Nar Centauri war which ahs devastating consequences for both races as the Shadows move and push both of them and the members of the league of non aligned worlds to war with each other as chaos grows.

7: Sheridan is "taught" by Kosh the Vorlon lessons to help understand each other better unitl as Kosh tells him"You are ready to fight legends." These lessons help Sheridan understand the wider role he plays but also reveal some shocking revelations about the vorlons themselves. Sheridan is let in on the secret of the first ones, the Vorlons and Shadows and the coming great war of a thousand years and his discovery will lead to profound consequences for him.

8:The End of the war and the destruction of Narn. NArn is bombed by Mass drivers as the Centauri despite londos objections engage in wepaons declared illegal by most of the civilized galaxy. The war ends with the surrender of Narn and the removal of Gkar as ambassador. this leads to a final confrontation as B5 grants shelter to a Narn Warship and is attacked by the Centauri.

Sheridan is nearly assassinated in response but is saved when for the first time Kosh reveals himself out side of his encounter suit in a way that leaves all people who see him amazed and shocks the audience.

9: The introduction of the Technomages, played brilliantly in this episode by Michael Ansara who with his order leaves the galaxy to avoid the coming war and preserve their secrets and knowledge.

As elric says We are dreamers, shapers, singers, and makers. We study the mysteries of laser and circuit, crystal and scanner, holographic demons and invocations of equations. These are the tools we employ and we know many things."

The true secrets, the important things, 14 words to make someone fall in love with you forever. 7 words to make them go without pain or say good-bye to a friend who is dying. How to be poor. How to be rich.  How to rediscover dreams when the world has stolen them from you."

The second season remains a pinnacle of story telling as as we ride the roller coaster to the top of the rise waiting for the inevitable roll down hill into the action packed second season. with many twists and turns to come.

Season 3

"The Babylon Project was our last, best hope for peace. It failed. But, in the Year of the Shadow War, it became something greater: our last, best hope… for victory. The year is 2260. The place: Babylon 5.”

— Commander Susan Ivanova (Claudia Christian)

The third season of Banbylon 5 is widely considered the best of the seasons and with good reason. If the 2nd season was the peak of the roller coaster then the third is where the ride really kicks into high gear. Babylon 5 engages in battle with earth forces as the Shadow war kicks into high gear and more revelations are made of the conspiracy back on Earth. Also the battles are some of the best in the series as The Army of light begins to form and the Rangers are introduced in full with the character of Marcus Cole who would go onto become prominent in the main casts lives.

1 "Matters of Honor"
The Babylon 5 crew is presented with a new weapon with which to fight the growing Shadow threat. An official from EarthForce comes to the station to investigate Lt. Keffer's recording.

2 "Convictions"
A series of random bombings rocks the station and threatens the crew and the ambassadors. A group of monks from Earth arrives on the station.

3 "A Day in the Strife"
The Babylon 5 crew makes contact with a strange alien probe. G'Kar's standing among the Narn is threatened from without and within.

4 "Passing Through Gethsemane"
A kindly monk finds himself assailed by strange objects and previously hidden memories. Lyta Alexander returns to Babylon 5.
49
5 "Voices of Authority"
Ivanova and Marcus go searching for the First Ones with the help of Draal. Sheridan comes under the scrutiny of the Nightwatch as well as Babylon 5's new "political officer".

6 "Dust to Dust"
The "Conspiracy of Light" is jeopardized when Bester comes to Babylon 5 to find a dealer of the telepathy-inducing drug Dust, one who has made G'Kar's acquaintance…

7 "Exogenesis"
Franklin and Marcus investigate an outbreak of parasitic aliens in Down Below. Ivanova is tasked with determining whether Lt. Corwin is suitable for the "Conspiracy of Light".

8 "Messages from Earth"
A startling revelation leads Sheridan and Delenn on a dangerous mission into Earth Alliance space. The Nightwatch expands its influence over Babylon 5.

9 "Point of No Return"
When President Clark declares martial law throughout the Earth Alliance, the command crew must find a way to stop Nightwatch from taking over Babylon 5. Londo receives a prophecy from Emperor Turhan's widow when she visits the station.

10 "Severed Dreams"
President Clark tries to seize control of Babylon 5 by force, forcing Sheridan and the command crew to take arms against their own government. Delenn confronts the Grey Council.

11 "Ceremonies of Light and Dark"
Delenn tries to organize a Minbari religious ceremony to help the command crew and the ambassadors to adjust to their new situations. Remnants of Nightwatch attempt to undermine Sheridan's control of Babylon 5. Londo confronts Lord Refa.

12 "Sic Transit Vir"
Vir faces calamity when his fiancée – whom he has never met – arrives on the station, and his "work" as the Centauri ambassador to Minbar is revealed.

13 "A Late Delivery from Avalon"
A traveler arrives on the station, claiming to be a character out of the Arthurian legends. Sheridan and Ivanova try to gain recognition of the station's new status among the alien governments.

14 "Ship of Tears"
Bester returns to Babylon 5 with secret information about a weapons supply ship and proposes an alliance.

15 "Interludes and Examinations"
The Shadow War begins in earnest, and it falls to Sheridan to rally a force against the Shadows. He requests help from Kosh, which brings profound consequences. Franklin deals with his stim addiction.

16 "War Without End (Part 1)"
Jeffrey Sinclair returns with a mission vital to the survival of the station: traveling back in time to steal Babylon 4.

17 "War Without End (Part 2)"
Jeffrey Sinclair returns with a mission vital to the survival of the station: traveling back in time to steal Babylon 4.

18 "Walkabout"
Franklin continues his walkabout through Down Below. A replacement Vorlon arrives on the station. Sheridan is determined to score a victory against the Shadows using his newfound advantage.

19 "Grey 17 Is Missing"
Garibaldi investigates an abandoned level of the station. Delenn is installed as head of the Rangers, but Neroon doubts her worthiness.

20 "And the Rock Cried Out, No Hiding Place"
A delegation of religious leaders comes to Babylon 5 to visit Brother Theo and to provide assistance to Sheridan. Londo sets a plan in motion to rid himself of Lord Refa.

21 "Shadow Dancing"
The Army of Light prepares to engage the Shadows in the biggest battle of the war yet. Franklin's walkabout comes to a bloody conclusion.

22 "Z'ha'dum"
Sheridan's wife, who supposedly died four years ago, tries to convince Sheridan to come to Z'ha'dum and meet his opposite number. Londo receives important news about his political future. The Shadows move against Babylon 5 itself.
Highlights of the third season include:

1: the revelation of earths connection to the shadows when an earthf orce rep investigates the Death Lt Koepler who died at the end of season 2 but recorded a shadow vessel which killed him.

2: The return of Lita Alexander and further revelations about her connection to the Vorlons.

3: G'kars revelation which would lead to his ultimate understanding and a profound change of his character.

4: The introduction of the White Stars. A gorgeous ship of Minbari and Vorlon design that it is hoped would enable the younger races to have a fighting chance against the shadows ancient and powerful technology.

5: The rise of the night watch as Clark continues to tighten his tyrannical grip on Earth and its colonies using fear and division. this would lead to martial law and the beginnings of the resistance.

6: the bombings of Mars when they refuse martial law causes the Earth Alliance to shatter as colonies break away. Babylon 5 is forced to do the same when they receive word of warships coming to seize Babylon 5 by force. Sheridan and the Command staff make a fateful decision to stand and fight drawing a line against the darkness.

7: Delenn breaks the council when the Minbari refuse to act Delenn in one of Mira Furlans finest performances breaks their leadedship council and drives them to join her in the war.

8: The Rise of Vir Cotto. Vir cotto starting out as bit of a joke character and comedy relief played by Steven Furst is one of the characters who grows and develops the most throughout the series. In an episode featuring him we discover that hes used his position to commit acts that have shocking reprecusions in ways no one expected.

9: Londos prophecy In a visit with the now gone Emperor Turhans wife played by Star trek alum Majel Roddenberry. Londo receives a Prophetic vision from her of his destiny and ways he can "" avoid the fire that awaits him."" the prophecy would have effects far reaching as Londo begins to like Gkar change and grow more and more.

10: War Without End parts 1 and 2/ Few series have ever done a two parter like B5 did with this one. Brilliantly written and directed war without end takes us into the events presaged in season 1s Babylon squared where we learn who took B5 and why, as well as further revelations about The One, and who the one truly is. The return of Michael Ohares Jeffery Sinclair and his ultimate fate would be one of the truly amazing twists in series history.

11: The vorlons enter the war as Sheridan cajoles them into action but the decision has consequences.

12: The return of a special someone to Sheridan has profound effects as Sheridan finally travels to Zhadum where he makes the ultimate Sacrafice to end the war.

And many more all in all Season 3 has so many amazing moments. One of the best episodes is A late delivery from Avalon where King Arthur comes to B5 the story is a great episode for the actors and raises some interesting questions about Earht history in relation to the vorlons.

And its just one of many great episodes. The third season like its title states is the point of no return were in it now fully commited to the ride and stuck on it till the end. And what an ending and what a ride it will be.

I think B5, was one of my favorites as well. The 1st season, was pretty weak, yes. But like you pointed out, the overall story line won out over the fact they were still trying to set up the whole thing. Very good stuff indeed.

I honestly as times gone by don't consider the first season weak such as the term implies. Its in hindsight looked at like bread crumbs spread out along the path.

THe Signs and Portents as the series title says that lead us to see the overall story that's building up. Comments such as Neroons you talk like a Minbari to Sinclair that would have a profound impact when its significance is revealed later.

Just updated 2nd season third season to come

I'm in the middle of a rewatch of the fourth season and fifth season soon after

The only real issue they had with the fifth season is that it came on the heels of the explosive conclusions of the fourth, and that they were under the gun because the studio was waffling on whether to renew for the fifth which JMS had planned.

That's why the 4th ends with the episode it ends with which should have honestly been the end of the 5th season.

I just finished watching the 4th and 5th so ill be updating those soon.
