Just a lot of people making the decision Disney didn't want them to make.
Eh, if you can find screenshots on that, that would be useful. Everything I've seen so far is showing people both clicking the checkmark saying they don't plan to see it and leaving nasty "reviews". Of course, that's no longer an option. You simply indicate that you don't plan to see it, that you plan to see it, or you review it. That makes sense to me.

And, of course, this is emblematic of the problem. You get a lot of tales passed along, and it gets tricky to separate the initial reports from breathless reports that there's "review bombing" or "review suppression" or "astro-turfing". I was recently reading a good NPR article about how we're having the same issue with politics and extremists in voting talking only about "widespread voter suppression" or "massive fraud" when the reality lies much more in the middle, that both are relatively minor issues.
There used to be a button you could click saying "Not Interested," along with one that said you WERE interested. There was a percentage displayed of how many respondants were interested in seeing it. This was, of course, heavily weighted in favor of the movie, because most of the time, you're either interested or not viewing the movie's RT page. When you left a response, you could leave a comment about why you voted that way.

In this case, the fanbase, angry about terrible trailers and exclusivity based on race and sex, came to let their voices be heard. If you want to allege brigading, you need evidence. Best I've seen presented is one tweet with a couple hundred impressions.

Nah, I don't think there was a case of a very large group of people acting in a "coordinated, sustained and organized way" (to use the Urban Dictionary definition). It seemed like a fairly small number of people writing the "This film stinks because I don't like the actress" and when Rotten Tomatoes changed their method of displaying it, things got blown out of proportion because, again, people were pretty much proceeding without any actual proof. So you have people who heard about hordes of negative reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, people who heard about mass suppression of those reviews, and in the end, it does all seem to come to naught except that Marvel got a lot of free publicity from the furforall.

It is, as the saying goes, "full of sound and fury, signifying nothing."

No one was writing "this film stinks," because that is a REVIEW, and you couldn't post reviews yet. There were people saying "f* this movie, because the trailers suck, the star is horrible, and nothing about the marketing makes me want to see this film." Perfectly valid. You are of the mistaken belief that people were posting reviews, because the media had to portray some kind of lies and malice in order to protect Disney.

I wish I hadn't seen it. Hours of my life that I won't get back, but I felt compelled to evaluate the film on its own merit. I didn't see any merit, so I guess I'm still waiting.

Watching the build up for the Captain Marvel film reminds me a great deal of the build up for Ghostbusters 2016 and The Last Jedi. You've got the same mix of people where on one side you've got people trolling the easily offended and the legitimate sexist/racist/homophobes who can't articulate an argument beyond simply saying "____ doesn't belong in this film". On the other side you've got the people that have decided that these films are important hills to die on in the name of social justice and that anyone who offers up any criticism for said works must be a troll, alt-something, or some kind of "ist/phobe". And in the middle of both extremes you have the vast majority of people who like or dislike the film based on its merits and their own opinions.

And like with the other films I've mentioned, the controversy was less about the movie itself and more about what members of the cast and the PR department have been doing, as well as the click-bait articles certain websites have been posting, relying on artificial outrage to boost views. The whole Rotten Tomatoes thing was another weird wrinkle to the whole thing, because as far as I understand, there was no review-bombing before the movie came out. Mainly because it's impossible to review bomb a film that hasn't come out, all you could previously do was click on a tab for whether or not you wanted to see the film and list why. The problem is that some people looked at the "Want to See" posts as reviews. While RT claims that they didn't remove that feature due solely to Captain Marvel, the timing is very suspect.

It's all very stupid, and something that could have been avoided without the usual players making the usual noise. You've got some legitimate trolls stirring up trouble, and you've got the usual outrage mongers deciding who and isn't a troll based on whether they liked or criticized something that isn't out yet.

So now the movie is finally out, and I saw it yesterday. I won't get into spoilers until we get another few days in, but a spoiler free review of it would simply be this:

It's okay.

It's not great. It's not terrible. I'm likely going to buy it. But it's not an example of the better MCU films. It's very clearly a girl-power film, and that's not a bad thing in and of itself. There are parts that feel authentic and some parts that are pretty cringe inducing. The effects and action scenes are as good as you expect a Marvel Movie to be in this day and age. The story is decently told, Sam Jackson is great, though there are a few logical hiccups, plot holes and some adaptation decisions I'd have argued against. I'd say the biggest problem is Carol is frequently the least compelling character in the film, and I'm sure if that's the writing, the directing or Brie Larsen herself.

But overall, if you can get past the plot holes, a few odd decisions and a few eye rolling moments, it's exactly what it should have been marketed as: a decent superhero action film.

I liked it. Was it Thor: Ragnarok, Black Panther, Civil War tier for me? Nope. Were there some things I didn’t like? You bet. Was it enjoyable overall? For me, yes.

The feminist angle was there, of course, but I didn’t feel it was overdone at all. I thought Brie Larson did a decent job but Samuel L was the man, as always. Ben Mendelssohn (I’m sure that’s misspelled) was amazing and the Rambeau women were excellent as well. And Goose rocked!

But the pacing in the first two acts was wonky, too many of the jokes didn’t hit like they do in most Marvel movies and some of the MCU “wink, wink” references were a bit overdone. A mixed bag but fun overall. I don’t know if I’ll see it again in the theatres with things picking up in a couple of weeks with Us and other things but I’ll watch it again for sure.

I just returned from the cinema and I'm still processing some of the element, but I generally feel that this was a "checkbox movie".
It was entertaining and I actually appreciated how they reworked the Kree-Skrull War to fit into the Cinematic Universe, but it didn't have the "wow" factor I got from many other Marvel movies. In general, the movies of this last phase of the MCU tried to put superheroes into different genres: spy-thriller, heist movie, crazy family comedy, etc. Captain Marvel doesn't even try to break any new ground, it felt like the writers were filling a checklist of elements that needed to be included in a origin movie.

The thread has been split, with the cut material going to the Hall of Shame.

Feel free to review the material there and my reasoning for splitting it if you wish.

Generally I concur but I think my issue was that I felt the writers and directors seemed to try and fight themselves on the "origin movie" piece. They ended up hitting all the points like you said but it also tried to just jump in and go, leading to the pacing issues.

I will say that the Stan the Man stuff is worth seeing the movie for. I almost teared up and yet was smiling the entire time. :( :) :( :)

Saw this and Enjoyed the holy hell out of it, Not the best marvels ever made but easily top 5 IMO and easily ranks as top 5 of superhero movies Period with only Aquaman AIW and possibly end game coming up to be ahead of it.

Well worth the money to see and I actually debated seeing it in IMAX.

The whole she doesn't smile crap is just that its BOGUS. She smiles plenty when she has something to smile about and the movie has some fun laughs along the way.

Really good soundtrack that ends with some epic music at the right time.

Nick Fury Steals the show of course but hey when doesn't Sam Jackson chew scenery in a movie? and he gets upstaged by Goose anyways so its all good.

Brie does a great job as Carol and we can definitely see why shes the badass she is in the movie, Love a lot of the call backs to the comics with PP, the twist to the Kree Skrull war, and the return of several classic characters and possible intros to new ones that we know.

Pacing was great barely felt the 2 hours pass by at all and no the first and middle sequences weren't clunky in the slightest only real slow down is right before the big final battle and it works because its a build up to the end sequence

And man that tribute to Stan Lee at the beginning and his cameo, break your heart and catch the onion ninja before they escape,

Only major criticism ? Not enough Coulson dammit Want more Phil and maybe some shout outs to May or Mac.

All told I loved this movie don't believe the haters see it for yourself and enjoy.

Darn that cat make sure to stay all the way to the end for the big reveals

Finally saw it- I was planning on waiting, but I'm JUST SUCH A FEMINIST THAT I HAD TO... I mean, I found the reviews superlative and wanted to go see... okay, the pretty girl at the Disney Store asked if I'd seen it and said it was good. YOU HAPPY?

I enjoyed it WAY more than I was expecting to. People said it was boring, but I found the "sorting out the mystery" stuff interesting, and the crazy references to the exact things I recognize from when I was an adolescent were terrific. OMG, that movie reference! And interesting how they used actual comic book characters' names for all the side people. I mean, "Guy with blade" and "the hottest girl in the MCU, actually" didn't really NEED to be recognizable (well, to me) Kree comic book characters, but I like that they actually used them.

I really only counted three moments specifically speaking to WOMYN/FEMINISM, and it adds up to like ten seconds- just douchey things a few characters who don't even get names say, plus someone pointing out that women weren't allowed to fly in combat (and not raging about it; just stating it matter of factly).

The fights were a bit "bleh"- too much fast motion and stuff flying around. One of the better "Good Showings" in terms of power since The Avengers. Carol was much better than I was fearing- the usual fears were "she's totally bland" and "she's a Strong Woman (tm)", but she was actually pretty fun. Mouthy, sassy, and never giving up. A lot snarkier and willing to tease than I was expecting.

I haven't gotten to see the movie yet, 'cause poor, but apparently Brie Larson mentioned being a fan of Sailor Moon, so someone made fanart;
