Reliable sources are now reporting that DC Comics might soon be moving to $5.99 cover prices for comics.
That’s absolutely nuts.

Re: What's new with the big two: Marvel and DC Comics discussion thread.
I've started to wonder if the American comics companies would do better taking a page from Japanese manga, where they put a single big book that has the latest chapter for a bunch of different stories in it, and then eventually collect each separate story into it's own trade(s). And maybe aim for having at least six to eight of those a month. Like, Marvel would have it's Avengers Monthly Magazine or what have you, with that month's chapter of Captain America, Iron Man, Scarlet Witch, etc. stories, and then one for the X-Men, one for Spider-Man and other solo heroes, etc. (You could probably have a MAX-esque one doing adult/R-rated stories featuring Venom, Deadpool, Logan, and the like, and maybe a Horror character one as well.) And DC could have its Superman and Batman family books, it's Justice League one, it's magic/occult one, etc.
It's probably a pipe dream, but I just can not for the life of me see how anyone would pay $6 for a single monthly comic issue (that isn't one of those 80 or 100 page specials or one of those prestige one-shots like they used to have for Elseworlds).

Simple awnser Hoss; they won't. The DC price hike is a DELIBERATE attempt by DC's parent company to tank it, as it's currently making more money than their Live-action movies.

I'm practically a Ferengi when it comes to my support of free-market enterprise; But this just doesn't seem like a viable business move. Netflix's streaming plans cost $8.99 per month... and offers way more entertainment hours per dollar than a single 32-page comic.

In all honesty, for the last few years, both companies have really been little more than subsidized IP generators for Disney and Time Warner. While the MCU's success is mostly justifying Marvel's continued existence (especially with Disney apparently wanting to use a lot of the newer "woker" versions of characters for the Disney+ shows), the general misfire of DC's film universe, combined with these repeated reboots, may mean DC's current owners don't really consider them worth the effort any more. Especially if they can keep control of the existing IP rights to characters and stories without having to do much more than occasionally reprint existing material in trade form.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there are teams of lawyers (highly trained, super-secret, ninja commando black-ops lawyers) somewhere deep inside the House of Mouse that are trying to negotiate a buy-out of the DC Comics brand from Time-Warner.

I wouldn't put it past the House of Mouse to buy DC out right from under Time-Warner's nose. They already own half our childhood's, why not go for the rest?

The latest rumor seems to be that Robert Kirkman is trying to use his Walking Dead and Invincible money to buy DC. No idea how true that might be.

If true, i honestly hope Kirkman get's it. Say what you will 'bout the man, but at least he believes in the product and will only reboot it once(he'd need to intregate Rick, Daryl & Michonne into the Bat Family after all).

It’d be damn nice to have someone running DC Comics (or Marvel Comics) that actually likes superheroes.

I agree, but given how Invincible turned out, I'm not sure that applies to Kirkman.Batgirl III wrote: ↑Fri Mar 26, 2021 1:22 pm It’d be damn nice to have someone running DC Comics (or Marvel Comics) that actually likes superheroes.

The problem is that superheroes are inherently childish concept. Boil it down, superheroes are people in funny clothes with fantastic abilities going around helping people.Batgirl III wrote: ↑Fri Mar 26, 2021 1:22 pm It’d be damn nice to have someone running DC Comics (or Marvel Comics) that actually likes superheroes.
Adults scoff at the costumes, even though real acrobats, circus strongmen, and dancers STILL wear trunks over their tights to hide their junk.
Adults can almost handle the fantastic abilities, even though of the three it is the least realistic element.
And going around helping people? Forget about it. Sure, altruism exists, but the writers and editors... they're all jaded; they can't really wrap their head around "doing what's right because it's right."
So you have these jaded people who resent that their work is viewed as kid stuff. And they try to make it more not for kids. And... yeah, they hate superheroes.
