Injustice: Absolute (Young) Justice IC

The cries of gulls resounded overhead as the hum of cars filled the air. Brighton’s streets, normally so serene, were filled with dozens of cars and trucks, each headed for New Gotham, some twenty miles to the southwest. Some were filled with families trying to rebuild their lives after the devastation of Gotham a year ago, while others were leaden with supplies and construction crews to rebuild and reclaim Gotham from the near tribal state it had devolved into in the past year without intervention of the governments, who were busy rebuilding themselves after Superman destroyed them.

Green Lantern
The senior trip was usually supposed to be fun, but Janet was swiftly discovering that “fun” was a relative term. After her high school’s programs had been reconstructed from the totalitarian demands of the Regime, and the building had been physically rebuilt from Brainiac’s assault, it had been decided (though by whom, she wasn’t sure) that the senior trip would be to New Gotham.

“Alright folks, off the bus. We’ve only got about half an hour to New Gotham, but in this traffic, it’ll probably take two. We’re gonna go get lunch now, so that no one’s starving by the time we get there.” Mr. Steele, the history teacher, rolled his eyes, his voice growing somewhat sarcastic. “I know you all are growing boys and girls, and get hungry about every fifteen minutes, so go on and fill your stomachs.”

A nervous giggle spread throughout the bus, even as the students began filing down the stairs and out.

Grace
The summer sun beat down on Miranda Cortesi’s head as she sat in the back of a pickup truck, one of the many ways that the University was helping to return students to campus after the many emergencies that had come down since her acceptance into the college.

“Everything going alright back there, Miranda?” Sarah Rosenstein called from her place in the passenger seat. “It’s not exactly, um, safe.”

“She’ll be fine, Sarah.” Karol Summers replied before Miranda could, a smile in his voice. “I’m a great driver, I’ll have you know… now if only we could get out from behind these supply trucks, and I’d have us to New Gotham in an instant.” He pushed the horn with an air of boredom.

Prestige
Brighton, this was where Zee had thought he was most needed. It seemed oddly busy to Tobey, with streets full of cars and buses and trucks. Whatever the case was, something was going to go amiss soon – of that much, Zee had been certain, and if she was certain, that meant Tobey had to go along with her certainty.

The passing pickup truck seemed to be highly irritated with its place in the line, as it honked its horn loudly at the supply trucks before it. Well, nothing for it but to watch and to listen.

Inquisitor
Victoria was sitting alone in the outside of a café – it was called Belladonna or something like that – enjoying her food and drink and awaiting Roger Freys, the agent that Bruce Wayne had assigned to her case. He was supposed to be coming to meet her here, but the traffic had clearly gotten the better of him, as he wasn’t yet here.

A group of chattering students – not much younger than Vee herself – came around the corner, heading towards the café proper. A horn blatted loudly from nearby – a pickup trucker annoyed with the rate of traffic, just across the street.

All
Before things had a chance to progress much further, a loud explosion erupted nearby – about a block west of their mutual location. Shrieks and screams of terror intermixed with several further explosions of pink energy – something was clearly going wrong over there, and heroes were needed!

Tobey leaned lazily on a streetlight, hands buried in the frontpockets of his hoodie. Only the occasional restless tap of his foot and his eyes scanning the busy street from underneath the hood betrayed his bored facade.

Zee had insisted that he be here and she was better at reading cards than he was so here was. Watching as everyday folk hustled and bustled to and from, working together to rebuild their homes and their lives. Tobey idly wondered if he should do the same. Ever since the Regime his life had taken such a drastic turn that he wasn't sure where he was headed.

The explosion rocked him from his thoughts and Tobey caught himself on the light he'd been leaning on. Shrieks and screams of terror followed, ending any hope that the sound had come from an uninhabited building.

Springing to action, Tobey spoke an incantation. "Noitativel dna cistym dleihs!" His words seemed to manifest as multicolor lights, flowing across his body to form discs at his hands and feet. Pushing off from the ground, he rose into the sky above the rooftops for a better vantage point before flying as fast as he could towards the source of the explosions.

A nearby couple gasped, flinching back from Tobey's demonstration of magical prowess, though the child they were pushing in the cart giggled happily at the lights and the sight of the flying man. It was probably too young to remember a time before the Regime, or even remember much of the Regime at all. Lucky for it, when you got right down to it.

Victoria sat at the cafe, her head on a swivel boredly as she waiting for the liaison, agent, whatever, to show up. Eventually, she gave up and just lopped back in her seat and sipped her chilled tea, the sandwich she purchased already gone.

The horn caught her attention and lazily, she turned her head to the side to look, spotting the chatty teenagers in the process. After being locked up in a box for the better part of six years, Vee was still coming to grips with remembering how loud the city could be. Granted, Gotham was no Coast City, its people were...grittier? Not like, in a filthy way, though some of them were that, just they seemed more like they were more strung out than the residents of her own hometown, at least, as she remembered it. <"Note to self, ask agent Freys if I can put in a request or something to visit Coast City for like...even a day.">

And then things went pear-shaped. The sound of the explosion had Vee sitting upright in her seat and looking around for the source of the sound. Seeing the bursts of link light, the psychic girl got up and started moving against the flow of people fleeing, towards the explosion, making sure she had her supply of 5-u-93-r pills with her, just in case she needed to be superhuman. <"Hope Freys doesn't mark me as tardy to the meeting for this..">

GREEN LANTERN

I could be Green Lantern-ing right now.

That thought repeated on loop through Janet's head once the realization of just how terrible a twelve hour bus trip was compared to flying. She sat in the aisle seat, since it meant the student to her left didn't have to fight Janet for the armrest. The young woman shifted in her seat, trying to get her phantom limb out of the uncomfortable position it felt like it was in. She had to distract herself from the boredom and the throbbing; locking eyes on one of the more popular girls seated near the front who was smiling at her phone's camera, a smirk crept onto Janet's lips.

Psh. I could go take a picture on Mars. You don't see me doing that, do you Olivia? Bet I could get way more likes than you too. Maybe get the first ever selfie with a Guardian of the Universe. Hashtag no filter. Because I'm a Green Lantern; I help aliens and have cool space adventures... and am now stuck on a bus.

After all the seniors had shuffled off the vehicle, Janet began poking her head over the crowd to find her friend Paul, who had been assigned to a different bus. Both of Paul's parents were killed in the Brainiac invasion, and now he lived with his older brother. The two had bonded over their mutual loss from the attack. Before Janet could find him, however, a deafening explosion went off nearby, sending tremors and panic through the crowds. While terror gripped the students, Janet almost had to stifle a smile.

Yes, finally! A reason to- She stopped, her hand halfway into a pocket before realizing she couldn't do that in a public area. Not if she wanted to maintain the secret identity thing. How do the other heroes slip into their uniforms?

"I have to go to the bathroom!" she said for anyone who was listening. Nice.

Fortunately, people were more focused on the pink blasts; nobody paid much mind to a teenage girl pushing her towards a secluded spot. Once she was confident that nobody was watching, Janet brought it out: the Green Lantern Power Ring. One of the most powerful weapons in the known universe, in jewelry form. With just a thought, a brilliant emerald glow came from the ring. Ribbons of green energy burst out, wrapping around Janet's entire body like flowing fabric. Once she was completely enveloped in light, it began to peel away, revealing a Green Lantern uniform underneath.

This could be it. A chance to do good and prove herself, without babysitter Hal Jordan looking over her shoulder. Not wasting a moment more, Janet turned her head skyward, taking off into the air.
OOC: Once airborne, can GL see Prestige?

Victoria had to fight against the fleeing crowd - as most of them seemed to think, for some obscure reason, that going away from the scary pink explosions was the natural reaction. She heard fragments of screams, shouted conversations, terrified whispers, and even the occasional stray thought when someone bumped into her.
"-don't think it's-"
"- Superman would never have-"
"-my children? Where're my-"

Fortunately for her, she wasn't a "normal" psychic, because she could well imagine that the crowd's thoughts and emotions would be paralyzing if she could feel all of them at once. Even the jagged fragments she was getting weren't easy to deal with.

Making her way through the frozen lanes of honking traffic, she arrived on the other side of the street just in time to see a young man in a suit sparkling and flying upwards with a tilt of his imaginary hat.

Green Lantern

As Janet descended the steps of the bus, she realized that at least the bus had been a coach bus - had it been a regular school bus, the last twelve hours would have been literally hell, as opposed to just figuratively. As she looked about for Paul, she found that he was crouched down, hands over his head in a fetal position - a reflex, perhaps, developed in his experiences of the last year.

As she declared her need for the lavatory, Mr. Steele's shout followed her. "Janet! What do you think you're doing?! This is dangerous-" The rest of his words were lost in the screaming crowd. Regardless, soon Janet Baker was gone, and in her place stood the more than fully able Green Lantern (rookie) of Sector 2814. Well, "stood" only for so long, as she swiftly took to the air.

As she did so, she got a better vantage point of the town of Brighton, and moreover, saw a multicolored glow as a boy about her age floated up on the other side of the street, tipping an imaginary hat to the people he'd apparently startled on the sidewalk. Some people had no subtlety.

Miranda hadn't made a lot of friends since she started college- besides the fact that she was naturally quiet, her training and her studies took up a LOT of her time. But while she didn't have many close friends, she did know a lot of people, and was on the fringes of a number of social groups- though almost everyone thought of her as a book nerd, and she got invited less to parties and more towards group study sessions. Still, she rarely had trouble finding a ride back and forth between the various parts of the college (temporarily at least it was a scattered mess of housing over here, classrooms there and there and there, library there...).

Riding in the back up the pickup wasn't too bad- the traffic definitely kept their speed down. As soon as the explosions started (or perhaps, a half-second before) she hoisted her oversized shoulder bag up out of the truck bed, then stepped out herself, to stand on the street. Two steps, and she was beside one of the larger supply trucks, another five and she was on the corner. Everyone was still looking towards the explosions, now marked with pinkish energy. If everything stayed the way it normally did, Karol would be far more concerned about his truck than his own safety, and he and Sarah might notice Miranda was missing by the time they got back to campus.Since she had started her real training, it had been a bit of a shock to realize just how little most people noticed when things started exploding nearby...

Another couple of steps and she was around the corner, her bag tucked under one arm with her cowl, gloves, and gear inside amongst her school stuff. Most of her costume was light enough to fit under her (deliberately loose-cut) street clothes- all of her instructors, Bats or not, had been firm about the need to be prepared ALL THE TIME.

Using the alleys and cross streets she made her way towards where the explosions had been happening- she wanted to at least get a look at the situation before she risked changing into costume.

>OOC: Moving towards the incident- double move (or rather move, then a second move substituted for her standard action). Not just straight down the street, but not exactly stopping for coffee either. Let me know if I need anything else, or any rolls, but I wanted to get SOMETHING posted.

Miranda, with her natural agility, didn't have any issues moving against the current of panicking people. Sirens flared through the air as police vehicles attempted to navigate the crush of traffic in the distance. Before she could get much further, though, she noticed a pair of glowing, flying individuals to her right.

All
As Green Lantern and Prestige rose into the air, they saw on the next block over, a man wearing yellow armor with flares of pink running through it stood atop one of the supply trucks. He gestured, and another car nearby detonated in a pink explosion.

All of the teens heard a voice from a loudspeaker: "THIS IS THE COUNTY SHERIFF. GET OFF THE TRUCK AND SURRENDER OR I'LL-"

The two fliers saw the armored man gesture sharply, but everyone felt as much as heard the ominous cracks of a familiar weapon - one everyone had heard over the past six years. Seven lines of blaster fire - of the sort favored by the Regime - lanced out of the back of the truck, and struck down the cop.

The armored man spoke, his voice difficult to hear.
Everyone make Perception rolls to see if they hear the armored guy's little speech.

Seeing the armored attacker, Tobey was about to comment loudly about the man's garish choice in colors when the blaster fire opened up from the truck. The quip died on his lips as he tried to squeeze more speed out of his spells before this bozo turned those guns on someone else.

Tobey angled the trajectory of his flight upwards to draw the armored man's fire away from the people on the streets ...in theory. "Eyes up here buddy, you just won front row seats to a world-class performance!"

Victoria had only heard blasters like that once, the day the Regime showed up on her doorstep and her parents tried to tell them the Regime could not have their little girl. The same day that marked the beginning of the six year ordeal that was the inquisitor program that made who who she is now, for better or worse.

Vee seized for just a moment at the sound of blaster fire responding to the sheriff's demand, memories of the day she was taken away flooding her mind momentarily before she ruthlessly smothered them and took on of her 5-U-93-R pills and picked up the pace.
Perception: 1D20+8 = [3]+8 = 11 Probably not.

Powering up, and then taking making constant routine Athletics checks until she gets in view of the situation to boost her ground speed rank by 1, effectively doubling her speed as her muscle strength increases.

Miranda moved closer, as quickly as she could- the flood of people made it difficult, but not impossible. While she heard the sound of the blaster, so did everyone around her, and one of the fleeing civilians started screaming right behind Miranda (perhaps someone who had heard the Regime's blasters a little TOO closely before...). It did, however, drown out whatever the armored guy was saying fairly well.

More importantly, there were two obvious flying glow-y people visible now. Miranda took a moment to look them over...

Green Lantern eyed the magical teen with suspicion. His powers seemed very colorful; was he the one causing these pink explosions? And also was he... mocking the terrorized citizens? Flaunting and reveling in the destruction? She quickly darted in front of him, holding up a green stop sign that had materialized in her hand.

"Hold on there," Janet said with an accusatory tone. "I'm Green Lantern and this is my space sector, so if you're behind th-" Another explosion rocked the area, and Janet's head snapped in the direction of a man in yellow armor. Or maybe it's that guy.

Not having any reason to trust Prestige, but recognizing him for not being an immediate threat, she gave the magician the wordless signal for "I've got my eyes on you" before flying to confront the armored individual. She arrived just in time to watch as the sheriff was gunned down.

"NO!" she cried out, her emerald aura flaring with her anger. For the man's sake, she hoped whatever he was saying was a surrender.

Tobey was caught off guard by the new arrival, not having realized he wasn't the only super on the scene. He didn't know who she was but that emerald glow and the costume were unmistakable. She was one of the good guys.

"Whoa, cool it GL, I'm here to help the people. Tincan over there is the one causing the trouble." Tobey lifted his open palms into the air in what he hoped was a placating gesture. Last thing they needed was fighting amongst themselves and letting the armored badguy get away.

Green Lantern
Before she swooped in across the building tops to the next street, Green Lantern heard the armored man's voice in response to the sheriff's death.

"The Regime is seizing these supplies. Any who resist will be considered as Insurgents and dealt with appropriately! Now leave this place, or we'll be forced to kill you!" He shouted, his voice cracking slightly.

Prestige & Green Lantern
Prestige heard the screams of the crowd, the shouts of police, but not the words of the armored man, until he flew closer. The man glared up at him from a surprisingly youthful face - he wasn't that much older than Prestige himself. "Insurgent scum! You'll pay for interrupting Regime business!" He thrust his thumbs into his own chest plate. "I'm the Blast Master, and you, you are interfering with official Regime business! Get out of here before we kill you!"

Abruptly, four armored Regime infantry leapt out of the truck, leveling blaster rifles at Prestige and, behind him, the Green Lantern.

Inquisitor
Inquisitor's newly enhanced strength and the rapidly fleeing crowd made for an easy passage through the alleyway, where she emerged onto the next street over, just in time to see four soldiers disembark from the supply truck. She was also at an angle just right enough to see that there were yet three more Regime armored soldiers in the back of the truck, their blasters leveled at the police to her left.

The police were busy themselves, however, as one woman knelt beside the corpse of an officer. "Shotgun! Dammit!" She cried, before lifting her pistol and leveling it at the Regime. "Open fi- wait, what are you doing here, kid?! Get out of the line of fire!" It took Victoria a moment to realize she was the kid in question.

Grace
Miranda's attention was distracted by the two glowing people and the shrieks of those nearby:
"-gonna die!"
"Don't let them-"
"They're back! They're back!"

Nevertheless, she managed to identify some things about the two people. The first, the man - she thought she recognized what he was doing, at least, from some of Batgirl's files. He was performing magic of some sort - though of what sort, she had no idea. Presumably, he was using it to fly, but there was probably more to that glow than just flight.

The other one, the girl, she knew much more about. The Green Lanterns were commonly held to have invaded Earth four years prior, and Superman and the Regime, allied with the "Yellow Lanterns" - the Sinestro Corps, Grace knew - beat back their unwarranted aggression and killed several of their leaders, though not before some of their number - the ones from Earth - saw fit to protect the Earth over the interests of interstellar dominators.

However, she also knew that the commonly held story was total nonsense - or at least, dreadfully incomplete. The Green Lanterns had come because they wanted to apprehend Superman, who was destabilizing Earth, and acting as a villain rather than the hero he had been. Two of the Green Lanterns from Earth - whose identities Batgirl had entrusted her with - John Stewart and Guy Gardener - had died to Sinestro's treachery and lies, and Hal Jordan, the final survivor, had been corrupted into the Sinestro Corps. Thus, it seemed a reasonable assumption that this Green Lantern was the successor of one of the deceased Green Lanterns - though she seemed rather young, so she might yet be a rookie. That said, she did have the badge of the Green Lanterns, and was thus a full member of the interstellar police that the Lanterns represented.

As she moved closer, Grace was confronted a scene out of a nightmare - an armored man atop a supply truck, with wreckage of other cars strewn around it. Four Regime soldiers leveled blasters at the police and the fleeing crowds, while three more lurked in the belly of the beast - the supply truck.

All
Blast Master scowled at the flying heroes, gesturing. "Now surrender yourselves to the Regime..." Pink energy crackled on his hands. "Or face the consequences." Unfortunately for him, he seemed utterly oblivious to Victoria and Miranda.
