"What can I say, I'm an incurable optimist. And we were all of us already putting our lives in each others hands the moment we stepped into this den of cutthroats in the middle of a warzone."

He shrugged, though his right hand did go up to his upper lip, as if to check for any sign of a sharpie moustache.

"Besides, I heard screams and thought innocent lives might be in danger. Decisive action goes with the territory of the superheroing biz an' all."

Grace
Grace found that despite her best efforts, she couldn't crack the code on the tablet - it was too advanced for her to do without access to more advanced equipment than she had available to her at the moment. Indeed, within a few moments of tinkering, it locked her out for another fifteen minutes, sending an alarm to the network of the Regime... now long-since defunct, thankfully.

Her knowledge of Gotham's gangs was actually far superior to many in New Gotham. This deep into Gotham, she knew that the gangs claiming the territory and such could shift and flow with astonishing regularity, but she'd heard of both the Street Demonz and the 'Gators. The Street Demonz were a pre-Regime gang that had somehow survived not only the five years of being hunted by the Regime but also Brainiac's invasion with an insane stubbornness that she could only call Gothamite. With no supervillainous associations, the Street Demonz were druggies and an average gang before the destruction of Gotham. Now... she wasn't sure what to make of them.

The 'Gators, by contrast, were a relatively new gang in Gotham, led by Killer Croc and Orca, they had been carving out their own little fief ever since Croc had returned to Gotham. Furthermore, Oracle's rumors had it that they were somehow linked to a renewed production of Venom, the super-steroid that was linked to Bane most prominently.

Vee looks around at the improptu team. "Alright, well, there doesn't seem to be any other Regime posers around, so let's get out of here for now then and see what we got on that tablet. Not terribly interested in tangling with gangbangers if I can avoid it." her blue-gray eyes settling Tobey. "Take us home magic man."

Tobey smirked as he made a show of dusting himself off before giving an elaborate bow. "Your wish is my command."

He repeated the steps that had brought them here, first opening a portal halfway to the scene of the initial attack, then once everyone was through, following that up with another portal bringing them to an alleyway overlooking the scene of the fight.

Janet hesitated from stepping through the portal, clearly having an intense debate with herself. Inquisitor was right; they didn't come to Gotham to stop the Street Demonz and Gators from tearing each other apart. Not to mention every minute here was just going to make explaining her absence to her teachers more awkward. But... this was supposed to be her space sector, and one of her responsibilities was protecting all life, even those of low-life gang members. Was it really OK to just head back? She knew they weren't about to clean up the ruins of Gotham in one day, and maybe they should get out while they could, and-

"We shouldn't leave," the ring-slinger finally asserted. "Those gangs may not be innocent, but I swore that I would defend all life. Hell, it's the first rule of being a Lantern. I can't just let murderers walk away." She raised her ring up with a clenched fist, its light intensifying with her determination.

Vee pauses, having intended to be the last, or second last out, depending on whether Tobey needed to be the last in to hold the door as it were for the ladies. "Look GL...that's noble and all, commendable even, but we're just not equipped to even try tackling Gotham street gangs. If we were, supers stronger and better equipped than us would have already done it. We're still catching our breath from the battle earlier, and once we start fighting gangs, when does it end? Not even Batman could stop all crime, and when Superman tried....well, we know how THAT turned out." The superpowered teen rubs her eyes, feeling the fatigue still set in deep from the previous battle. "C'mon, let's head back for now. We can report what we've found, and maybe figure something out."

Tobey looked away from the others, clearly uncomfortable with what he'd seen. "The Demonz broke and fled. The way the both of them were going at each other I'm not hopeful about survivors. This fight's over, but we can look over what we learned and prepare for the next one."

Miranda looked around at each of the other in turn, then looked back into the open portal. It would be easy to step back through, to make a report to the Bat-Powers-That-Be, and go back to school for the rest of the day.

She sighed. Ho often had one of her mentors told her that the easy way was almost never the right way?

"It wouldn't hurt to go take a look. There might be someone there that can be saved- and it isn't like EMS is going to be coming." The corner of her mouth twisted into just the hint of a sneer. "And maybe we'll find somebody that needs a thrashing. Those Gators might be getting to think that having a source of Venom makes them a force to be reckoned with- could be its time to remind them there are scarier things than them on the streets of Gotham..."

And with that, she turned so her back was to the open portal, and she was facing the door. "Anybody else want to come along?"

With a groan, Vee look between Janet and Miranda. "Come along and do what exactly? Blindly chase down gang members until we are too tired to move? Until one or more of us gets seriously hurt? We are not going to single-handedly clean out all the gang scum in Gotham and you both know it." She looks pointedly at Miranda, taking in the other girl's costume, pretty clear to tell where her influences were. "What do you think Batman would tell you to do?"

Miranda crossed her arms and nodded towards the door. "He would say 'get out there'- we don't have to clean out the entire gang problem in one day, we just have to do a little bit here and there as the opportunity arises. Every Venom-sucking Gator boy or random scumbag who wakes up with a permanent injury or crippling bout of fear radiates out, like ripples in a pond, a part of the bigger picture." OF course the Man himself wouldn't actually SAY that, not out loud, but it is what he would DO. And he would certainly have a lesson hidden in there somewhere- probably on "the unforeseen consequences of stirring the ripples in a pond"...

"And I'm not in the least bit tired- if you are, then there are cardio programs that can build endurance. it takes a while to get results, but it can really be worth it..."

Vee scowls. "Are you serious with trying to goad me like that? That's just childish. You have no plan, no actual goal. You're suggesting we just blindly go out there and fight gangsters because justice. Are you out of your nut?"

She makes a sweeping motion towards the portal. "We fought back there because there were innocent lives at risk and we were the only ones there to act. We could have waited for the big guns, but people could have gotten hurt." then motions outwards indicating Gotham in general. "That isn't 'as the opportunity arises'. There's no innocent lives in imminent danger. That's marching out looking for a fight. No real hero would condone us going out there."

Not equipped? Janet had one of the most powerful devices in the known universe around her finger-who else was better equipped? But... Inquisitor wasn't entirely wrong. Janet's body still ached terribly from an explosion Blast Master had sent her way, and there was no guarantee her Ring could track down the gangsters. And maybe she was just looking for another fight. The young woman let out an annoyed grunt; not at Vee, but at herself for not being in a better position to do something. Maybe it would have to wait, but someday, Janet was going to come back here to help clean things up. Prooobably when she wasn't still a White Circle.

"Alright, fine," the rookie Lantern relented. "Maybe you have a point. Maybe," she emphasized, mostly just to be stubborn. "But for the record, I think justice is pretty a good reason to fight gangsters. Just... not today."

Tobey motioned to the portal with his best disarming smile. "So lets head back and look at what we have, plan our next steps from there. I'm all for coming back here later when needed."

In the back of his head Tobey remembered overhearing a heated conversation between Zee and Constantine. She'd tried to pitch to him working with Batman's new Justice League while he'd argued getting more things done on his own, rather than tied down to a team. Of course she'd countered that was only because he either pissed everyone off or tried to get in their pants. Constantine hadn't tried denying that.

Vee gives a relieved sigh when the others relent to heading back for now, nodding to Prestige's suggestion of coming back later if needed, the blonde teen turning and heading into the portal.

As Grace vanished into the streets of ruined Gotham, the other three exited via a portal back to the rooftop that they had first teleported to, and then back to the scene of the Regime Remnant's last stand. Once they arrived, they found a potentially impressive sight waiting for them - the town of Brighton had been cleared up of the wreckage, at least partly, and the police were still present on the scene... but so was one of the most famous people in the world.

Batman stood in the open, his expression grim as he gazed down at the damaged shops and houses from their battle earlier. He looked up when they arrived, his eyes narrowing. "You three are part of the group that subdued these criminals?" He asked as the trio approached. "Samson Steele - who called himself Blast Master - has been on NGPD lists for months as a problematic. Commissioner Rush will be pleased to hear that they're not going to be reestablishing the Regime in Gotham any time soon."

He surveyed them for several long moments. "You worked well together, here. The League has need of as many talented young heroes as possible." He paused, considering. "We would like you to form a new team, to address threats that the League and the Titans are too busy to do."
