The numbers were swirling in her brain by now, and she could only just manage to blink it away when the the man looked over to her. "Oh, erhm..." She places down her eight with a definite unsuredness along with what she's seen another lady say upon putting down the same types. There was a wonder in the back of her mind, if that initial move of utter reckless may've actually kept her hand from being utterly massive.
Am I dead? Am I alive? The answer may surprise you!

"Splendid" Olev says, adjusting his spectacles and planning his next move. He brews a plan in which he will use Cindy as a pivot point, to make the old ladies dropw their guard and then he would play a fast hand, making them take up a bunch of cards.
At the other question, he replies dryly "It is only I who needs to win, she can do whatever she wants".

After a couple fruitless minutes checking around the corridors and poking her head to make sure that Cindy and Olev weren't deprived of their lunch money. Irene stopped shook her head and rolled her eyes simultaneously before taking out her phone and sending Maverick a text

"Where are you? May have something."

she then proceeded to follow a hunch further into the building

Joshua taps his bank card on the portable terminal and accepts the plush bee "minion". "Nah. Just figured if you are as notorious as you say, you probably knew all the villains that were running around in your time, yeah? Let me see if I got the name somewhere on my phone.."

Pulling out his phone, Joshua sees the text from Irene and taps out a quick response. Room 249. Checking a lead.

Busying himself a little more as if looking for something on his phone, he finally looks up. "Ahh, there it is, Hazel Court. She was active at one point in Southside, but is supposed to be deceased. We're supposed to do research on her." he rattles on, meanwhile carefully watching for any signs of recognition of the name from the bee-striped elder.

After Cindy places her card, a few seconds pass before one of the ladies at the table sighs and sets another card in front of Cindy, intoning, "Failure to say Eight of Spades". The game proceeds pretty much as one might suspect. Olev quickly picks up on the (admittedly somewhat rudimentary) rules in fairly short order from the direction reversing properties of Aces to the suit-naming capability of Jacks to the required naming of Spades and wishing of nice days with Sevens. The residents still play cannily, but Olev does have the benefit of a superior memory, allowing him to better anticipate which cards will be coming up. Still, the game continues to be somewhat luck-based, and he is not the winner for a few rounds more during which new rules are added by the winner of the previous round. Finally, he wins a round, prompting cackles from some of the resident biddies before their ringleader speaks up.

"Alright, fair is fair. Ask your question and we'll all give our best shot at it. What'll it be... best location for beignets? Leads on attractive grandchildren of ours? Today's password for the Cape and Cowl Club?"

"Hazel Court..." Nisbet taps on his chin, evidently deep in thought, "I'd say that's a name I have haven't heard in a long time, but honest, kid, that name doesn't sound familiar. I mean, I knew a lot of the people back in the day, but people kinda kept their personal and professional lives separate if they could. Masks stayed on, even in the bedroom." A dreamy smile crosses his face for a few seconds before he shook his head.
"What else can you tell me?"

Joshua hasn't exactly left a physical trail to follow, but the presence of younger people is notable in this place, and a few discrete inquiries directs Irene to Nisbet's door. The door is currently mostly closed, but she can hear the murmur of Nisbit and Joshua talking.

Everything had come to this, to win and to get the information. Almost to the point of a nerve breakdown, as Cindy complicated his strategies, Olev rearranges his glasses and clears his throat. "We would like to hear all you know about Hazel Court."

By the end of the last round Cindy's eyes have become completely unfocused, miraculously having only five cards in her hand. Somewhere along the line she made an internal vow to never ever play card games again, though whether or not she'll follow through remains to be seen.

"Urgh... Is it time to leave yet...?" The girl groans out, slumping forward and letting the cards cover her head.

Joshua taps his chin in thought, recalling what Olev had uncovered. As limited as that information had seemed to him, maybe Mr Nesbitt would be able to do something with it. "Well, we searched the name and got one hit from the 50s, a college girl who went missing after meeting up with some beatnik poet named Christopher Carradine who was suspected, but no evidence could be found to link him to it."

Irene stood before the door considering whether to just kick the door down but then shook her head at the ridiculous notion. they were in an retirement community worst possible thing that could be happening was Joshua being roped into giving someone a sponge bath. chasting herself for her own imagination she reached up and knocked a couple times on the door to announce her presence.

Skølldir / Tough Stuff

You get a lot of puzzled looks among the group, and a quick discussion.
"Is that... some sort of pop star?" one asks.
"That sounds like an address in the Fens..."
"Evelyn mentioned that name a few times, said she was friends with her, and even got some kind of letter."

Ultimately, the lady who established the stakes of the game clears her throat and says, "Well, we can't help you too much there. Evelyn is probably your best bet, but she gets Sundowners this late in the day, takes some work to get her out of the past and into the present to talk to her. Apparently, they went to Freedom College together, but Hazel disappeared after they went to see some poet at the student center. Evelyn sometimes talked about getting a letter from her somewhere in the 60s saying that Hazel was OK, but she lost it when she was moving from her apartment to here. This is a nice place, but you can't keep much. The way she talked about Hazel was that she was the brightest, prettiest, best classmate ever. I think maybe she's built her up over the years."

"Hmm... Hazel Court, South Side." Mr. Nisbet tapped one finger to his jaw as he contemplated the name. Southside had a bunch of us working it, what with the casinos being there. As Willie Sutton said, that's where the money is. Foreshadow keeps it pretty clean these days, although Scrounge apparently does a good job of always coming up with an ace in the hole. Before that, it was Hepcat, and of course, the Raven, taking care of business... August Roman was on top of things for organized crime. Buncha small villains. Carradine was semi-famous, I guess, big with the college chicks, all mysterious and berets and things." He turns and opens up a laptop and pulls up what looks like a site with scanned images of newspaper pages.
"I got access to the newspaper morgue several years back, got an in with the IT guy who was scanning it for the archives. Lemme see if the text search is working... date range around the 50s... probably Freedom College... and yeah." He taps a button, and he opens a drawer, revealing a printer, which is disgorging a page. He hands it to Joshua. It's a short news story from March 15th, 1957 about Christopher Carradine and an upcoming appearance at the Student Union. Nisbit provides two more articles in short order. One from a week later is an appeal to the public for information about Hazel Court, who disappeared the week before, enjoining the reader to contact the Freedom City police with any leads. The other is about a few days later than that, commenting on how Christopher Carradine rather abruptly disappeared the public scene despite being on a tour for his book, with some speculation that it was a publicity stunt from the publisher.

"That's pretty much it, all except... huh." Whatever Nisbet is about to say is interrupted by a knock at the door followed by Maverick's phone buzzing at him with Titaness's incoming text message.

She clunked her head against the table, her skull sounding every bit as solid and thick as the elders probably assumed it to be. "All that for just some stuff we mostly already knew about... Think Irene and Joshua had any more luck, gearboy?"

Skølldir / Tough Stuff

One of the residents starts slightly, then speaks slowly.
"But if she went to Freedom College and there was an event then, it would have been at..."
"Oh, you're right. The Student Union."
"Didn't they call it the Community Center?"
"I thought they called it Mashed Tomatoes?"
"That was the nickname..."

There's a few seconds of silence before the ringleader of the group turns to Olev and Cindy.
"They had a building where the students went for events. Some bad things happened, drugs and girls going missing. Maybe Hazel was one of those. The college decided they were throwing good money after bad, and built a new center on the other side of campus. Last I heard, the old center turned into some sort of nightclub."
"Funny... kind of like that other school."
"Claremont Academy. Bah... they should have closed that a long time ago. 'Course, now there's those superhero kids... but still, it's only so long before the buildings catch fire again."
