Eldritch City- the Beginning

Eldritch City, dusk, a thick haze in the skies, turning the setting sun a dark red, late September

The sun sets over the fields, a Miata kicks up dust as it drives down the farm to market road. It feels like you've been on the road for hours. You thought that you knew the backroads but this simple drive out to the country was supposed to be easy, quick.. and is turning into an endless maze.

So far it's been a boring case, Roswell Insurance not wanting to payout for a grieving widow amd hiring RS&W to cast enough doubt into the situation to make sure that they didn't have to pay more than they have to. Only this time there might be something to the case, poor schmuck was out in the fields when a crop duster that he hired decided to dump the load on the pumpkin fields. Messy. Just a coincidence, right?

So, you decided to go out, take a look around, see if anything came to you. Maybe wifey is on the level, maybe its just all a coincidence, maybe something more sinsister. Hard to say anything for sure yet.

Especially since you haven't been able to find your way to the farm yet. Just how easy is it to get lost out here?

Over in your purse, your phone starts to ring with the chiptune version of Sweet Louise. You had talked about getting together at her place for dinner. She sounded excited about it yesterday when you last spoke.

Alexis Harrington
Magic Mayhem- a new comedy/magician club, your first night

It's hard to know what you're going to get when you go into a new club. Sometimes its friendly, everybody pushing each other to greatness.. together. It maybe competitive but is good natured, trying to push everyone to be better than they were before. It's an incredible feeling.

Then you have nights like tonight. Hungry. Angry. Petty. Spiteful. Crab mentality, 'if I can't have it, neither can you'. If they can't succeed at their calling, nobody will.

"And for our next guest, Seeeeeexxxxxyyy Lexxxxxxxxi!"

And you're on.

Another night, another run.

You slide into the passenger side of the bus and look over. That isn't Marty in the driver's seat. Marty isn't that meticulous in dress, or female.. or that cute.

Almost before you finish closing the door, she's pulling away from the dock, eyes forward.

You're about to say something when the box squawks, looking for someone to go out to Fourth and Xenu- a light use warehouse district- not much in the way of crime, sometimes an illegal party gets out of hand, car accidents with the horrible Eldritch City traffic. Concerned citizen calling in, trying to keep a woman from bleeding out. Sounds like drugs are involved.

Fortinbras

There she was. The dame. Dressed to kill and prowling into a nightclub. Her old man hired you this morning so that he would know that she wasn't stepping out on him. Guys like that were always insecure. She's way out of his league and he can't keep himself from doubting himself.. and her. Not the best way to make a buck but sometimes the only way to pay the bills.

Not the first time that you've heard the story. Not the last either.

Wouldn't do for someone with your ugly mug trying to follow her too close. People might get the wrong impression. Wouldn't do to hurt them just for trying to do the right thing.

Might be fun though.

Fortinbras

He eyes the front of the nightclub and pops a nicotine lozenge into his mouth. It lacks the style of lighting up, but garners fewer angry looks from passersby. Not that it takes effort for him to draw dirty looks.

He's going to stick out like a member of the KISS Army at a Justin Bieber concert in there. He sighs, moves the lozenge to the side of his mouth. "A distasteful task is best done swiftly," the Count used to say, usually before ordering Fortinbras to dispose of one of his failed experiments. Fortinbras squares his shoulders, curls the collar of his trench coat higher and approaches the door. When the bouncer gives him static, he introduces the man to Mr. Jackson. Two hundred a day plus expenses, he told the client.

Inside, he looks first for his target and secondly for a corner of the bar where he might be able to lurk, easily ignored if not unseen.

Lexi the Dazzling
HP: 1 LP: 1
Conditions: Fine

I told him it was Lexi the Dazzling. If my previous regular nightclub wasn't shut down for repairs thanks to that troll biker gang and I didn't need the work, I would walk out of here right now. Stepping out onto the stage, she began with a simple trick of causing a pack of cards to fly out of her hands and transform into a flock of doves, a simple illusion mixed with stage magic most wouldn't question. "Who is ready to see some magic?" Flames leaping from her hands and transforming into a bouquet of flowers, she tossed them to the nearest woman in the audience, no illusion magic needed for this old trick. What trick to go with next to keep the audience's attention, so many to choose from.

Phillip knew he should have checked the on-call roster before his nightly rig inventory. That’s where he would have seen the personnel shift and... uh... maybe learned his partner-for-the-evening’s name. Without turning toward her or being obvious and creepy about it Phillip inhales to get her scent. Sorting under the strong antibacterial gel that’s regulation to be used every time someone gives your hands a dirty look he tries to get at the underlying core of her - was there the Musk of the Beast, or the Sickly Sweet Fey Scent, or maybe something akin to his own Rot-Hint of Undead? Or underneath it all was there the mortal red blood pumping via a completely mundane heart?
is she supernatural in any way?
Regardless, Phillip suddenly found his mouth dry to be in this proximity to a woman - and one he definitely would have swiped-right.

He clears his throat to cover a couple of false starts before his attempts at words bore fruit.
“Phillip. I’m Phillip Dremmond. Are you normally a Day-Shifter?” He asks.
It happened sometimes that a person who normally worked during daylight hours needed a night shift to make up hours or for extra spending cash. It was the most likely cause of unplanned partner shifts as the rig coordinator had to juggle new bodies in the rotation.

This was a frickin' nightmare. Darlene was normally pretty savvy far from the noise of the big city; she and her sister had grown up in the tiny town of Tignall, Georgia, population 615, not so different from farm country up north. There was a certain logic to how rural communities are set up, but that didn't seem to be helping her at all today.

She was about to throw up her hands and plow straight into one of the fields in frustration when a cheerful electronic ditty suddenly suddenly brightened her day. Darlene tapped the button on her steering wheel to activate hands free calling. "Hey, LouLou! What's the good word?"

Dreaming.
Floating.
Darkness sprawling out in every direction.
Nothingness.

The world starts to come into resolution around you. A thick spiderweb running in every direction, bright in the oblivion.

The web bends, bending under unseen weights. You're familiar with some of the sights, representing places of local interest.

But something further away tugs at your interest, a jerking and twitching of something that has fallen into your web. Disturbing the balance. An annoyance.

Fortinbras

The bouncer frowns at you, arches a brow, starts to speak...is handed the bill, pauses.. and opens the rope for you. A shake of his bald head. "Good luck buddy, you'll need it."

If you were expecting a heavy bass thump, eardrum shattering music, flashing lights.. you'd be disappointed. In the center of the room is a grand piano, a stacked blonde poured into a brilliant scarlet dress showing off her nightingale voice and legs that reach forever. Around there are layers of booths radiating out from the center. Dark, smoky, cozy.

The waitresses aren't bad looking either. Curiously, a few of them are sitting with the patrons.

"Ahem, may I take your coat sir?"

The audience starts out cold, hard. Why did they even come tonight if it isn't to have fun? The tennis ball of audience participation thunks against the hard wall and drops to the ground.

But as your performance continues, things begin to thaw and flow, the audience giving back to you, the energy building with the transaction. Maybe not the most welcome of crowds, but they are reaching out for your hand.
Would Lexi try to please the entire audience? Would she be challenged by certain people that aren't looking to be having fun (hint)? Tell me about how she would deal with the trade back and forth.

Her blood flows warmly through her veins, singing to you, fresh and warm. Baking powder. Lavender. The musk of an active lifestyle. The stench of stress.

The woman arches a brow, glancing back at you in the corner of her eye. "Cameron. I've been warned about you. You're dangerous." Her eyes drift further, glancing at your shoulder, back to your face. Her fingers tap across the driving wheel, once, twice, thrice. She reaches up to the com, "10-17, in route. Expected time ten minutes. Maybe nine."

The bus pulls out of the garage, the lights swirling and the siren wailing.

You're pretty sure that you've saw that pumpkin patch before, maybe twice now. Then again, that's one of the problems with being out in the country- if you don't know what you're looking for, a field is a field.. is a field. Maybe would be easier when the sun is up in the sky and shining but..

"Hey DarDar! Smoochies! *giggle* I was just calling to see when you were coming... and see if you could pick something up from Hops to It?

Something big, fast, dark, low darts in front of your car, crossing the road from one field to another.

"Maybe something in the bubbly direction?"

Phillip checks his watch.
"Eight if you take Midtown Parkway at this time of night." he says casually.

"Hiya Cameron. I'm... uh... not dangerous. Who says I'm dangerous?" Phillip is just glad that his voice doesn't crack when asking.
