INSIDE
Most of the New Vindicators were gathered behind the warehouse when Magnitude dropped to the ground. “Shiver took off after Wolf,” he said. “Taheka and Puck are vith her. Vhere’re Current and Fluxx?”

OUTSIDE
“And the best part about your way is we all get to marvel at your cleverness right?"

“If I gave two shits what people thought about me, wouldn’t I have taken an approach that would have resulted in less attitude?” Robyn smirked. “I’m doing this for the giggles.”

Once Robyn pointed out Wolf’s flight from the warehouse, Violet was ready to leap into action. "Hell yes, we're going to stop him. Secure the doors or whatever you want, I'm stopping that git."

As she sped off, Magnitude looked to the others. “I’m going after the others. Stay with Violet. Tell her to finish this up fast, because I’ll be swinging around to grab you all next.”

Magnitude took flight, leaving Tamati with the fey. “You coming Robyn?”

Robyn stroked her chin thoughtfully. “Let me put my face on.” Robyn’s skin melted away, revealing a middle-aged woman, partially covered in burns. “Hopefully Simon Weiss is inside. He hates Neo-Sapiens because one who couldn’t control their powers accidentally killed his mother.”

Without any further hesitation, Robyn jumped off the building and slowly drifted to the ground. There, Shiver had already managed to stop the SUV from leaving, freezing the wheels in place.
Can Wolf open his door, Shock?

Otso shot Dennis a look as the Illusionist blocked the doorway with magic. "Widening your repertoire, Imago?"

Violet Lear
HP: 1
Condition: Fatigued

Violet saw the door twitch and froze it closed. A flick of her wrist made a frozen sheen over the window. When she got to the car, she skidded to a halt and sent a frozen fist through the now brittle glass. "Not so fast, Patrick." A knife of ice formed in her hand. "You're getting more than parole this time."
A small bit of artistic license here. Hope that's OK

Lex started running, but it isn't hard to tell that his heart isn't in it, barely breaking 60 MPH as they charge through the building and outside.

"I thought considering some of the problems before us, it would be a good idea."

Vestige nodded—not at Imago, whom she refused to look at, but to no one in particular. “Oui, it ‘as made me more useful. ‘Ere is to ‘oping some idiot wiz an over-inflated sense of purpose does not come along accusing you of zings you did not do and attacking in you in your own room.”

Without waiting for a reply, she made her way through the hole Jack had created.

Outside, their group was joined by Magnitude, who questioned whether the others had gone.

"Current got hot-headed and ran out to fight Crux. Fluxx is handling that, and sent us out this way."

Magnitude shook his head. “Those two make me want drink sometimes. Well, let’s go find them before they manage to escalate this...”

Taking hold of the group, Magnitude carried them towards the front of the building...

OUTSIDE
"Not so fast, Patrick." A knife of ice formed in her hand. "You're getting more than parole this time."

Wolf said nothing—no braggadocios taunts; no vows to have revenge; no claims that he would be out soon... The teen simple looked forward, bowed his head, and waited...

In moments, Taheka and Puck were on the ground, with Current and Fluxx arriving soon after. With Wolf contained, the others went to work on containing the other fleeing Crux as Magnitude swooped in with the others.

Faced with a man made of water, an electric speedster, a bear, and the monstrous appearance Greystone took, few were willing to put up a fight. Those who failed to surrender and let themselves be bond by Fluxx were snatched up in Magnitude’s gravity well or detained by walls of ice. Some ended up running right back into the building, thanks to Imago making them think they were running to safety.

Soon, the police arrived and began to take statements. That Wolf had cut off his ankle monitor didn’t help him; that one of his neighbors had taken a video on his cell phone of the van speeding into Kirstie, and then Wolf helping to abduct Lex only further muddied the waters for him...

Apparently, given the angle of the video, the neighbor had not managed to record Lex’s attack on the man Martin had impersonated—only the attack on Kirstie and the abduction of Lex.

Statements from Lex and Steven meant that everyone from Crux was arrested for illegally detaining the brothers. It helped that everyone involved wore a uniform: the green coveralls helped police identify everyone affiliated with the group and made sure that charges would follow.

As the police continued to arrest the people of Crux, representatives from the school arrived: Doctor Fisher was there, representing the school, along with Anisah Mirza, the school’s public relations specialist. Not long after they arrived, Magnitude’s mother—the attorney the school kept on retainer—was there.

Roger Murphy was there soon after.

At the sight of Lex, Roger broke into a run. Electricity crackled around him as he almost instantly cleared the distance between him and his eldest. "Are you okay?" he asked after hugging the teen for a moment. Ignoring that Lex was capable of regenerating if he was exposed to the energy most of their family members generated, he checked his son for injuries. "Did they hurt you?"

Stephen simply walked past the two of them.

"Us, Dad," Lex says reaching out and grabbing Steven's arm, "They got Steven too."

Stephen flashed Lex a look—the sort of look that was equal parts rage and pain. He was angry at his brother for including him here, and looked terrified that this would only end up hurting more than had Crux castrated him.

“You had us worried sick!” their father snapped at Stephen. “What were you thinking, running off like that?”

Stephen rolled his eyes. “I was thinking that I wanted to deck mom for the shit she pulled, but since I can’t exactly go and punch my mom, I figured these guys were about the same.”

“You could have gotten yourself killed!”

Stephen shrugged. “Not like anyone would care.”

“Plenty of people would care, son. Your mother cares. I know that it might not seem like that right now, but she-”

“Jesus Christ, dad! I don’t give two shits about mom, okay? What she did could have gotten Lex or one of your other kids hurt.” He gesture to Nate. “Him, or the bird kid, or the mood ring girl, or the little one. Doesn’t that piss you off? I mean... you care about them, right? How can you just stand there and...” The youngest Murphy threw his hands in surrender. “Whatever. Just... I dunno, okay?

“I’m fine, by the way. Thanks for asking.”

Roger looked to Lex for help. Before the older child could offer any, Roger looked back to his youngest. “Stevie... It’s... I was worried about you both. I was out looking for you. I heard that Kirstie was hit by a van and Lex was taken...”

“Yeah, so was I.”

“I didn’t know that, son. I’m sorry.” He moved to reach for the boy, only for him to pull away.

“Don’t, okay. Just... I don’t need a... I don’t want a fucking consulation prize.”

“Watch your mouth, Stevie.”

“Can you not call me that? I don’t like that. It’s Steven, okay. That’s my name.”

Once upon a time, it had been Alex and Steve. Then, right around the time one decided to go by Lex, the other went by Steven. As one shortened his name, one adopted the longer form. They went in two different directions. The only difference was their father respected one’s wishes...

“All right. I’ll call you Steven.” Their father looked earnestly baffled and unsure of what to do to rectify the situation. “Steven, we can talk about this lat-”

“We don’t have to,” Steven said. “You’d probably be much happier with your other kids. So, I dunno, go take them all out for ice cream or whatever you all do. I don’t give a... I don’t care.”

“Do you want ice cream? We can get-”

“I wanted my dad! Jesus! Do you know how hard I tried to be like you? I tried to learn to fix cars like you, or fight like you, or play football, or... Or... I almost electrocuted myself trying to get your stupid powers. Did you know that? But you don’t fuckin’ care, do you? You’ve never given two shits about me! It was always Lex, Lex, Lex! You’ve always been so proud of me, but me... You just look at me like...” Steven pointed at his father. “Yeah, like that! Just like that! Like you don’t know what to do with me! Why is it that being a father comes so naturally for you with Doug and Nate and Rose, but not me? Not your actual goddamn son‽ Why can’t you just be my dad?”

“Steven,” Roger said slowly, clearly at a loss for words, “I’m sorry if I... I’m not perfect. Maybe I messed up, but that doesn’t change that I love you.”

“Do you‽” railed Steven.

Roger sighed. “I love you both equally. Your my sons. Nothing or no one can change how I feel.”

“So why do you treat me so different? You always have!”

“Because you’re both so different! Because...” The man was clearly holding back. He bit his bottom lip. He considered it, and then he let it all out. “Because you’re not Lex.”

Steven stared at his father strangely, unsure what that was supposed to mean.

"No, he's not, [small]thank god for that amiright[/small]?" Lex says, "He reminds me of you, Dad."

“I just mean that...” Roger rubbed the back of his neck and sighed. “Don’t take this the wrong way, Steven, but your brother... He’s always been... Well...”

“Your favorite?”

“Stubborn,” said an agitated Roger.

“As a baby, he fussed if we didn’t let him feed himself. He had to pick out his own clothes. He had to dress himself. He never wanted help. You, though... I’m not saying you couldn’t, but you... Your mother babied you. Me, I was always afraid of you getting hurt. When you were both little, I tried to teach you to ride bikes. Lex would fall off and he’d get back up. If you fell, you needed to cry first, then go in the house for a Band-Aid, and then you were done for the day.

“I know you’ve grown up—both of you—but I guess that clouded me. I keep seeing that little boy who cries over things and when you say you want to learn to box, I imagine you getting hit and crying and needing a Band-Aid. You’re going to be a man soon, Stevie—Steven. You can’t keep doing that. Maybe you wouldn’t. You probably wouldn’t. But I just... I guess I did wrong.

“I’m sorry.”

Steven didn’t say anything. Neither did his father. They couldn’t even look at each other, vindicating Lex’s claim that they were too alike...

“So,” Roger said uneasily, “what do we do now?”

“I don’t know,” Steven said. “I guess... I start with...” He closed his eyes. He braced for the impact. “I’m sorry, dad.” He opened his eyes and looked at his brother. “I’m sorry, Lex.

“We don’t have to hug now, do we?”

"No," Lex grabs Steven and his Dad and drags them in close, "We don't have to."

Roger Murphy held his sons and fought back the urge to cry.
In anticipation of this session winding down, I started to coordinate this with Arkrite, so as to not draw it out for everyone else.

Everyone, feel free to add what you need to.

EPILOGUE
The door opened and a tired Roger Murphy entered the apartment ahead of his eldest son. Though Kirstie had not been injured in the crash, Roger still left to retrieve her mother. Carla Arnett was downstairs in the infirmary, watching her exhausted daughter rest, giving Lex time to babysit his father and brother.

It had been a long day. Each of the Murphy men was still processing the revelation that Lillian--wife and mother--had actually been spying on the school on behalf of Crux. Lex and Steven were angry; Roger seemed apathetic to it all. Still, none of them wanted to talk about it. They just wanted to be distracted from their thoughts...

"Are we still doing this?" Steven asked.

Roger eyed him warily. "Are you sure you wouldn't wanna see something else? I mean, aren't you a little old for superheroes?"

Lex flashed his father with a warning look. He had tried to tell the man that this was the sort of discouraging behavior that had been creating the rift between father and son. If he wanted to repair things with Steven, he needed to start showing an interest in what Steven liked. "He just doesn't appreciate Jeff Bridges," Lex said. "Remember that time when we went to that drive-in and they played Tron? Remember how much he hated it?"

"I remember that," their father said. "It was a double feature, right? The other one was that one with the kid and the spaceship?"

"Flight of the Navigator," Steven said.

"I never understood what you both saw in that. It felt like a bad E.T. knock off."

"I think Lex just wanted that alien thing as a pet," Steven said.

"Man, it's been forever since I saw that one," mused Lex. "Doesn't he leave and come back and eight years have passed? Maybe I should be lucky I was only away for a few months..."

Steven nodded and pressed play on the remote. "Yeah, one more month and Kirstie would have moved on."

As Iron Man started, a knock at the door brought them all around. Lex rose up and answered the door. "Hey, dad? It's for you." He stepped aside, revealing the school's counselor, Doctor Yavorshak.

"Sorry to interrupt," she said, "I just... can I talk to you for a moment?"

Roger nodded and rose up. Steven paused the movie and Roger urged him to let it play as he slipped out into the hall. "I'm sorry for whatever I did earlier," the man said. "I don't remember what all happened, but I got the gist from-"

"I'm sorry about Lillian," she said. "That had to come as a shock."

Roger shrugged. "I'm more angry than I am surprised. I'm pissed that she would do something like that. I love this school, Stephanie. More than that, our boys go here. She wasn't just selling out this school, but our son. I don't get how she could do that to Lex..."

"If you need to talk..."

Roger laughed uneasily. "Believe me: I'm coming to our next session with all the chambers loaded."

The woman looked away. "About that... Actually, I was thinking maybe Peter would be a better fit, there."

Roger staggered. "Is this because of what I did? I was under the effect of some kind of spell or something! That wasn't me!"

"I know! I know, it's... it's complicated..."

"Because of that guy I hit?"

"What?" Stephanie asked. "No, it's... No. He's..."

"When I took Carla down to the infirmary, I stopped in to talk to him--told him I was sorry. He said that Doc Fisher explained things to him. He doesn't understand it, but he gets that I wasn't in control. Still, I'm sorry for attacking your boyfriend."

"He isn't my boyfriend!" Stephanie exclaimed. "He's... Okay, this is going to sound weird, but... you know how I told you about Moksha? My mom married Otso's dad? That guy was Matt's brother. He's... sort of like my step-uncle, I guess. He's actually married and has kids and... and... and he is not anywhere near my radar."

"Oh. I... I'm sorry."

"Roger, I really value our relationship. We're friends. I shouldn't really be your therapist too. It's going to muddy things. It wouldn't really be professional of me, you know? It's something I've been wrestling with, and after everything that happened today-"

"Me attacking your step-uncle?"

"Your wife exposing herself as a member of Crux and being taken into custody?"

"There's also that, yeah."

"You're going to need to talk to someone, and I don't want to blur the lines between our professional relationship and personal relationship."

The door behind Roger opened; Lex and Steven looked out. "I'll be in in a second," Roger said.

"You ever seen Iron Man, Doctor Yavorshak?" asked Steven.

The counselor shook her head.

"Would you like to?"

"We have popcorn," Lex said.

"And orange soda," offered Steven.

"Who loves orange soda?" Lex asked. "Lex loves orange soda!"

Roger eyed his sons curiously, unsure what they were doing. After all, his children had never before tried to fix him up with a woman. "We were just watching a movie," he said. "Steven picked it out."

"Dad's not the biggest Jeff Bridges fan," Steven said, noting the tone of disgust in his father's voice.

The woman rounded on their father with an incredulous look. "What about The Big Lebowski?"

"Never seen it."

"You've never seen The Big Lebowski?" she said as she followed the Murphy men into the apartment. "Maybe it is better to just stay therapist and therapee."
Power point to each of you. New game coming up shortly.

New Vindicators Academy of Europe #29: The Son of Man

Post by Michuru »

NEW VINDICATORS ACADEMY OF EUROPE #29: The Son of Man

Monday, September 14, 2009

CORK, IRELAND (Current, Fluxx, Greystone, Imago, Shiver, Taheka, Ursa; NPCs: Armorer, Backlash, Cacophony, Candyman, Capacitor, Eiron, Fach, Felsic, Fiore, Hubris, Kiln, Larrikin, Magnitude, Manticore, Maze, Parabola, Pict, Puck, Rheid, Sidestep, Singularity, Tantivy, Thorn, Vestige)
“Alpha in position.” Hubris’ voice cut across Fluxx’s communicator. The Vindicator was hovering high over the building, courtesy of Magnitude’s powers. With them would be Candyman, Greystone, Larrikin, Manticore, Ursa, and Vestige. It was Larrikin’s job to wrap them all in an opaque shell—one that would render them nigh-invisible. It may have done better to have Imago tackle such a job, but given how vital Beatrice was to this aspect of the plan, the Esper was moved to another team.

On the signal, Vestige would use her magic to increase Ursa, Greystone, Manticore, and Hubris’ strength and endurance. Armorer, Candyman, Felsic, Rheid, and Singularity were already naturally tough. With Magnitude’s help, they would become human wrecking balls—jumping from an obscene height and plowing through the roof of the building, taking the occupants by surprise.

On the ground, Fluxx’s own Beta Team was moving into position: Imago was masking Fiore and Thorn’s presence—those two were crucial for the next stage of the plan. With them was Kiln and Taheka. Fluxx and Taheka were some of the more adaptive combatants; factoring in their malleability, they were considered relatively safe in this battle—even before Kiln’s fire powers were added in.

Lastly, Gamma Team consisted of the combat-ready members of the group. On his word, Sidestep would warp Backlash in with Cacophony, Capacitor, Current, Fach, Maze, Parabola, Puck, Shiver, Tantivy… should things escalate to that point. Fluxx doubted it would reach that level. He suspected that at the first sign of trouble, their target would simply teleport away.

Fluxx put his hand against the wall of the cottage. A thin tendril shot from his pinky finger and curved around the corner of the window. There, he grew an extra eye to peer in through the glass. He caught movement out of the corner of his eye—a figure circumnavigating the room, lighting candles arranged in a circle on the floor.

In the center of those candles was a bed. Another figure was writhing there—chained to the mattress. Whatever their target was up to, it couldn’t be good. For a brief moment, Fluxx feared it was the ritual he had heard so much about—the one that would allow someone to sacrifice their own blood to forever bolster their power. Seamus O’Shae had murdered his youngest children in such a dark ritual; the only two blood relatives the man had left were his brother and his son.

With Randy strapped to the mattress, Fluxx feared the worst: he feared that Robor might be about to end a classmate’s life in his mad pursuit of might. “Now.”

Vestige’s voice cut across their channel, uttering the incantations necessary to augment their classmates. In the wake of Puck’s revelations regarding Crux’ infiltration of the school, the school was handling its own communications now. The headmaster’s creation—Anne Newton—had been removed from all classes and designated as the school’s official switchboard operator. It meant that whatever semblance of life the android had been moving towards was sacrificed, but until another solution came along, it gave them all peace of mind.

Though he couldn’t be sure of it, Fluxx knew Greystone well enough to know that he was shifting forms. He imagined the American adapting some sort of armored plates to let him further absorb the impact. In Tokyo, Fluxx had met a student whose power made her an anthropomorphic pangolin. Greystone had studied their briefly, learning under Arthropod in how to get more creative with his powers. It was likely that he had also met Angelica and saw the benefit her powers might have.

Looking skyward, Fluxx saw them coming in fast: Greystone was curled into an armored ball, while Candyman was diving feet first for the building. Ursa jumped head-first and had trust a massive fist forward. One-by-one, they were falling and fast. They would generate confusion, giving Bravo time to rescue Randy.

Before any of Alpha had landed, an explosion of light erupted from inside the house. Fluxx looked back in, but couldn’t make anything out. Something was happening—that much was clear—but the light was too bright to make anything out. “We ‘ave univited guests,” he hissed over the communicators. Not for the first time, he bit off a curse at the notion that Fach had insisted on being a part of the mission. Even with some of the upgrades he had made to her—giving her something resembling control over her powers—she had zero defensive abilities. She would be a prime target for Robor—a potential hostage the Irishman could use to make Fluxx stand down. Thankfully, Cacophony had agreed to stay close to her. If things got too heated, the young woman could share her defensive ability with Tatjana.

Greystone made impact and the cottage shook. Candyman followed suit, followed by Ursa and Manticore. “Move!” Fluxx shouted. He loathed not knowing what they were now up against—he preferred to work with a plan—but he couldn’t risk letting Randy be sacrificed over something like his own obsession with preparedness.

Kiln blasted at the window and Taheka wasted no time in transforming into a tendril of water that shot through the newly made hole. The Caspian siblings didn’t need to be told what to do—they knew their role: work to counter Robor’s florakinetic talents with their own.

With Kiln giving them access to the house, Fluxx followed after Taheka and reformed in what was left of the house. The members of Alpha were standing up—unharmed even after all that. It was staggering what Vestige was able to do now. “Uh, Martin…” Greystone said, flabbergasted at the sight before them. “What the hell?”

Robor was gone. Whether he had simply fled at the first sign of ambush, or if he had simply been another of the madman’s simulacrums he preferred to send into danger remained unknown. Only two things mattered: Randy was still here and Randy was alive.

However…

Two other figures were in the center of the room—both brought down by the debris from Alpha’s arrival. “Liz!” one of them shouted as he phased through the debris. An arm stretched down and began disintegrating the rubble—dispersing it all into atoms. “So ‘elp me, if you’ve killed ‘er…”

There was no mistaking it looked like him and sounded like him. It even had his powers. But how…?

A second, older Martin Curie knelt down beside his unconscious companion and put a hand on her shoulder, immediately working to heal her. “Come now, belle. We boz know zat it will take more zan zat to end you…”

The Drifter coughed. “Thank you, Martin.” She raised her left arm and checked her watch. Her face turned pale. “No.”

“Get ready,” Greystone said, warning everyone in the room. “Whenever she shows up, it’s usually to yank us all away to save some other dimension…”

“Not this time, Jack.” The Drifter frowned and allowed this new Martin to help her to her feet. “The Astrolabe sent me to Martin’s world first and took him. It sent the two of us here.

“This time, the Astrolabe doesn’t need you to help save another universe: it needs this Martin to save yours.”

"Are you an Entier offshoot or 'original-recipe Martin Curie'?" Fluxx asks sniffing the air. He also gives a glance to Greystone. The Aesir's ability Jack got from the apple should be able to tell.

The new Martin looked at the native Martin strangely. “I don’t understand ze words zat are coming out of your mouz. I am very ‘ole, zankyouverymuch.”

“Excuse me,” said Randy from the bed. “If it’s not too much trouble, could someone maybe untie me?”

"Of course." Fluxx says, a bit chagrinned (but it was unclear whether that was toward Randy or Martin) and moves to dissolve the restraints.

"What name do you go by in ze field, Martin? And at some point I'd love to get ozer details of 'ow our lives diverged - like, were you ever a test subject at Patriot Robotics, did you ever meet and possibly modify a vat of experimental goo which gained sentience, you know, zat sort of zing."

Violet was again not thrilled about being left idle while waiting for something to happen. Given that she still felt partially responsible for Randy's predicament in the first place, this time sat even less well. She paced the floor nervously while waiting to be called. "I shoulda gone with them. I could freeze out all of Robor's plants."

Greystone:
[Jack Rexroth]

“Not this time, Jack.” The Drifter frowned and allowed this new Martin to help her to her feet. “The Astrolabe sent me to Martin’s world first and took him. It sent the two of us here.

“This time, the Astrolabe doesn’t need you to help save another universe: it needs this Martin to save yours.”
Jack sighed a tired and annoyed sounding sigh. "And lemme guess - you have no clue what other-Martin needs to save us from." The armored teen was not really a fan of the Astrolab, the semi-intelligent thing seemed more of a pain in the ass than anything. He did have to admit that Liz somehow made it work, but he had no clue how.

Of course Martin, 137 Martin that is, was more fascinated with meeting an alternate self. In Jack's opinion it was an overrated experience.
"Are you an Entier offshoot or 'original-recipe Martin Curie'?" Fluxx asks sniffing the air. He also gives a glance to Greystone.
Jack noticed the passing glance sent his way and his eyes turned golden for a moment as he looked at the other-Martin. The surprise Jack felt upon seeing the blood drop was impressively held back as he moved towards 137 Martin and Randy; first greeting the group's lost member with a firm hand shake, then moving next to Martin and sharing his discovery with the French teen with a look that questioned how that was possible.

He couldn't just beg off from saving somebody's life, but it was his first chance to get away since everything had gone down. Playing therapist for his Dad and Steven wasn't exactly fun, but it wasn't like he had a lot of choices.

Especially when the therapist bailed on that. If it wasn't for the fact that her being around actually seemed to calm his Dad down he'd have been pissed. As it was he was just confused by the therapist who wasn't therapizing while therapizing.

"I think we brought in enough people to wipe out a small country without even counting our entire team," Lex noted.

Fluxx shook his head in Jack’s direction indicating now was not the time.

Zird team, Randy is recovered and primary target fled as expected.” Fluxx says over the comms. “But all units be advised we ‘ave a Drifter and an older Martin from an alternate dimension.”

Jack gave Martin a short nod in response, understanding the other teen's intent. They were in the middle of a mission, so he turned his attention back to Randy and getting him back to the school.
