What would your happier place like to see us do? Do we gel into a super team or go our separate ways with the occasional teamup? Is Neotropolis moving into an age of superheroes or do we have to stay under the radar to avoid conflict with the police?

I don't have a good answer to that very fundamental question. I think that I was being unfair to you guys in wanting you to take a more active role in the story. That gives you a lot of power and freedom, probably too much so. Once upon a time, we were all pretty familiar with the environment and I was under the impression that you knew it well enough to run with it and set your own course. I would provide the backdrop and challenges. If you dealt with them, great! If not, well, those challenges could either fester or go away on their own. I guess more of a sandbox/modern open world rpg feeling rather than a traditional course set in a tabletop game.

Would that be of interest?

That could work.

Of course, it may behoove us to also wonder if we want to be a more narrative focused style as well - I don't recall having made many rolls in game unless we were in direct combat. I've already got conversions for Icons:AE in the wings, and recently got my hands on an old copy of DC Heroes 3e and have FASERIP lying around somewhere for more conversions.

... I like making conversions of the Neotropolis characters, they're fun.

Anyways, we should probably figure out what elements we are going to keep going in the future, starting with enemies, then we can work our way up to independents and then Other Heroes. As of now, our current list of potential enemies (from all players) was something like:

The Shrike:
Ogress - Mutant gangleader for The Tribals. In prison, but still leading from behind bars.
Babel - Hacker. Taken down by The Shrike, and in an asylum.

The Samaritan:
Quite a Few. A couple super-scientists who went villain, some metahumans that went bad and needed to be stopped, etc etc. Does the Coon Squad count? They're more "Rogues/Unaligned forces".

Hardlight:
The Black Syndicate - A crime syndicate, natch. They train assassins to do their dirty work.
Black Dagger - Grant's old bud, now an assassin for the BS.

E-Lass:
Also the Black Syndicate, but with Ariel's mom being the head of the Tempest Agency, which is a front for the Black Syndicate. Reveals that the BS is actually an international terrorist organization of some sort.

Celestial:
Much like the Samaritan, Kate didn't introduce any new villains to the verse from char-gen. Though, she does have the lead in for the Winter Court here in Neotropolis, which I was planning on leaning into for future vignettes (The Samaritan Learns Wrestling From Trolls!).

Dragon's Breath:
The Mandarin/Emperor Hand and the Han Dynasty - they're pretty much Fu Manchu from Marvel.
Steel Serpent - Jaiolong's cybernetic sister. Apparently, The Mandarin really likes western technology.
Jade Falcons - not bad-guys per se, but the biker gang has ties to organized crime families, like the Tongs
That Chinese Dude - Honestly, I'm figuring he's the Shen Kuei to Jaiolong's Shang Chi. What we know is that he's cool, connected, and a real badass.

CADIE:
Mr. Fix - I mean, come on, it's pretty damn obvious he's a time-traveler trying to pull a variation on Terminator... Of course, that means he could also be a good guy, but he uses terror to do it, so...

Det. Chris Everette:
I honestly don't recall what the case he was investigating was. Something with ambergris?

Gizmo Girl:
I never paid attention. Someone was turning plain girls into bimbo-figures with super-science?

Shadow-Walker:
Chimera - Yeah, they're basically HYDRA's science division, and nothing else. I kinda figure they've got a few legitimate enterprises, but whatever the Netropolis-verse has in the way of government agents and secret service ala SHIELD have them playing a shadow-war. To whit, the only threats are their metahuman agents that they genetically altered, and the fact they keep attempting to develop better supersoldiers.

ANUBIS:
The Fixer - The Obadiah Stane to Martin's Tony Stark, The Fixer is a corporate spy and white-collar criminal.

Blitz:
Also Chimera.

Jimmy Woo:
Neotropolis is home to a number of go-gangs, apparently, and the Jade Falcons aren't the only bikers in town.

Assorted Others:
Neotropolis has a lot of small crime, mostly due to fueding gangs. However, Neotropolis' gangs aren't just filled with gangbangers. Sure, a couple of them are, but most of the "gangs" are more like fraternal societies akin to the ancient Jiang Hu - they abide by codes of honor and loyalty. These "honorable gangs" are sometimes tied to organized crime, but tend to live within rules that keep a stable ecosystem - they protect civilians and keep trouble off their streets. Violence only ever erupts when someone messes up or at the borders between turfs with more violent gangs. For the most part though, the honorable gangs work within the law and are forces for good, but aren't above a little mayhem when it comes to keeping their neighborhoods safe from violent gangs and villains.

Neotropolis is also full of white collar crime, with corporations engaging in corporate espionage and with the occassional scientist having a breakdown. Those breakdowns usually result in Mad Scientist Syndrome, which results in the scientist going full Ham and needing their killer-robots to be destroyed by a hero like The Samaritan or Celestial who'll have them sent to asylums to help them overcome their madness.

And then there are the various threats that come from within and without of a more volatile and unexpected nature. But then, what can you do? It's Neotropolis!

Quite a Few. A couple super-scientists who went villain, some metahumans that went bad and needed to be stopped, etc etc. Does the Coon Squad count? They're more "Rogues/Unaligned forces".
Some big stories of 20 years ago with his parents and Doctor Wong doing the Incredibles thing. Now the entire family has some kind of power- not all what you think they are.
The Coon Squad is linked to Chimera.
What is his pervert friend became more serious?

Hardlight:
The Black Syndicate - A crime syndicate, natch. They train assassins to do their dirty work.
Black Dagger - Grant's old bud, now an assassin for the BS.
Don't recall much.

E-Lass:
Also the Black Syndicate, but with Ariel's mom being the head of the Tempest Agency, which is a front for the Black Syndicate. Reveals that the BS is actually an international terrorist organization of some sort.
Don't recall much.
Her roomate might be something more.

Celestial:
Much like the Samaritan, Kate didn't introduce any new villains to the verse from char-gen. Though, she does have the lead in for the Winter Court here in Neotropolis, which I was planning on leaning into for future vignettes (The Samaritan Learns Wrestling From Trolls!).
Where there is Winter, there is also Summer.
Kate's wealthy boyfriend can also be someone. It's hinted in her background.
Celestial is also linked to Mr Fix.

Dragon's Breath:
The Mandarin/Emperor Hand and the Han Dynasty - they're pretty much Fu Manchu from Marvel. Yes, very Yellow Peril.
Steel Serpent - Jaiolong's cybernetic sister. Apparently, The Mandarin really likes western technology. Did I say that?
Jade Falcons - not bad-guys per se, but the biker gang has ties to organized crime families, like the Tongs Yep. Sister is in the 'Samaritan harem'.
That Chinese Dude - Honestly, I'm figuring he's the Shen Kuei to Jaiolong's Shang Chi. What we know is that he's cool, connected, and a real badass.
If this is who I'm thinking of- had a Swinging 60s Hong Kong plot with him and CADIEs creator.

CADIE:
Mr. Fix - I mean, come on, it's pretty damn obvious he's a time-traveler trying to pull a variation on Terminator... Of course, that means he could also be a good guy, but he uses terror to do it, so...
.. not to mention that he reappeared as a wolfman. And dinosaurs on the street might have something to do with him.
There are also other AIs out there that the general population don't know about.

Det. Chris Everette:
I honestly don't recall what the case he was investigating was. Something with ambergris?
Perfume: The Story of a Murderer

Gizmo Girl:
I never paid attention. Someone was turning plain girls into bimbo-figures with super-science?
See MSS below.

I am fond of Sakar- dark mirror image of Nightcrawler

'Dreadknoks' were a fun idea.
That game also had the drug dealers and lead into the hypergenius burnout drug

Lillian:
I'm thinking of bringing her over to Eldritch.

Am lot of that comes from a general distrust of authority. After all, how could they be as hyperintelligent (mad) as the people they are trying to control?

Other ideas that never went anywhere:

Charity Cheating Casino- sort of a white hat hacking meeting for the gaming table

Neighborhood watch- how does the city deal with the rise of costumed... heroes?

At some point also had these ideas..

A Fantastic Four type adventure in which a scientist, a test pilot friend, the scientist's girlfriend and her brother.. call in Kate to record their brave experiment before funding it cut.

Captain Skyhook- a gentleman thief with a flying forklift was active decades ago but is now rotting away in prison.
Captain Bloodhook- Skyhook's prison bunkmate that steals the flying forklift and rampages throughout Neotropolis.

Yeah, Lilian would probably thrive in Eldritch City.

Thought that now brings up the question of whether Eldritch City and Neotropolis are in the same super-universe.

I mean, in that Lilian thing I was starting to run with the magic coffee shop and stuff, there was a Werewolf and Mage that were working for a secret order that keeps the occult in check as a global "Men in Black" for magic stuff...

I completely forgot about the Dinosaur Cybergang, that's awesome. Totally keep that.

And with the Lancasters... I honestly have no idea how Incredibles shenanigans would work. Kenneth's a super-genius even amongst super-geniuses, and has Techno-Control as a power. Linda is capable of mental invisbility and psychic shrouds, as well as mentally editing the memories of a couple dozen people in the span of a few seconds. And Robert Wong is... I actually don't know if he had powers back then. Maybe he was a werewolf back then too?

Also, Waheed going serious would be kinda interesting. To borrow from Worm terminology, what manner of Tinker specialty would he have? Not to mention Charley - dude's a Cape Geek, so he's probably got loads of potential plot hooks.

And can I just confirm whether my personal guess was right? That Ariel is actually a Tech-Hero or something? She was that flying-saucer chick that raced Celestial, wasn't she? Wasn't she?

I completely forgot about Mr Sing!!!! Yeah, he's also a big villain. But he's also mostly a lieutenant of The Mandarin, so that makes him tied to both Jiaolong AND Kate.

Steel Serpent: That was in Jiaolong's character sheet. She's his sister, but where Jiaolong got a Chi-Tattoo to deal with his Chi-Imbalance, Jia-li was put under the surgeon's scalpel, and fitted with copious cybernetics until she became a Shadowrun Burned-Out Adept who's hanging onto just enough essence to not go cyber-pscyho.

And as to the "Samaritan Harem"... Would you believe that I never intended that to happen? It just sort of... happened. I mean, I'm not complaining - it's hilarious fun because Dexter can't see himself as the object of girls' attention, but they are anyways.

I also didn't know Mr. Fix was the Wolfman!!! :o :!: What a twist!

And witht he AI, I'd assume that Kenneth, Brainiac and technopath he is, probably has one or two lying around? I wouldn't put it past the Lancaster's to have a "Smart Home" that doesn't act up when the kids are home.

Also, what's MSS?

And with the Jimmy Woo plot, I half-expected to have the Samaritan swoop in and try to administer medicine for all that Road Rage - Mayhem in the streets! This looks like a job for The Samaritan! :P

Hackers at a Casino sounded like an awesome idea too, and Neighborhood Watch would have been an interesting vignette/interlude.

I would be very interested in this. As for going forward, I realize why I've been falling into 'ditto' post and such with Shadowwalker. I gave her an origin but stuck too hard with the scared and in hiding bit. I've realized by looking back at the characters I've played in other campaigns, 2 separate MDSnowman ones back on the ATT, Adventures Assemble now over on Roninarmy as March Hare, if my character isn't outgoing and capable of having some zany and/or funny moments, I'm not enjoying myself. Thus when we start up again, I would like to figure out a way to get her off the bad side of the police, go see her parents and reveal what has happened, maybe even a news deal with her talking about being a victim and calling out to any others who were experimented upon by Chimera who escaped capture and brainwashing to come out as a way of dealing that group an indirect blow.

I would challenge you on that though... Marie is not a victim but a survivor of the horrible thing that happened to her. That puts the power back into her hands.

Yeah, that silliness was born from a Silver Age style villain idea I've had bouncing around my head for over a decade now. College frat boy who is a genius and comes from old money, loves bimbos and has figured out how to make a fast-acting retrovirus to transform women into bimbos. Set up a clinic with nurses and an old man pretending to be the real doctor, claiming it is a new form of beauty treatment. If he has a supervillain name, it would be The Babe Maker. Never spelled this out before, as I switched over to playing Shadowwalker and never expanded on anything I planned for Gizmo Girl. Got the idea from some artwork I saw on deviantart, some very unusual stuff in the TF sections over there.

I love that idea too. Can we have this be happening? It's awesome.

Like, I know we had a scene with Dexter/Samaritan walking with her to her parents, but she decided to sneak in instead of confronting them. So, I don't think it'd be out of character if he went with her to break it to her parents, as moral support. And, you know, make sure she doesn't back out of it in case she gets nervous.

Is it wrong that I could totally see that happening in Neotropolis, what with all the super-science? Like, he's got one trick, and it's not really that great. But he still lets it get to his head, succumbs to Mad Scientist Syndrome, and goes off abusing it.

It's like one of those vignettes ideas I had with "Dr DeVille" whose whole thing is that he makes robots, but decides to send them robbing banks and tearing apart ATMs because he doesn't want to actually get a job. The Samaritan would basically tear them apart then put him in Jail.

I'm not very good without a little bit of structure. I guess you could call me more reactionary than proactive. I spent the last couple of days wondering how Anna would get along now that she doesn't have to worry so much about Chimaera. With no legal identity how is she going to get by? And she's got to be wanted (for questioning at minimum) by all sorts of government agencies.
One thought I had was what would happen if someone came looking for her because she was the last person to see her rescuer alive? The guy who showed her the truth that Chimaera had been hiding from her all her life. Why is he looking for her and what will come of that meeting?

I'm left wondering if I put in TOO many plotlines and hit you guys over the head with analysis paralysis and left you with too many things to deal with. I've had some of that with sandbox electronic games. Wow! I can do anything I want! Oh crud.. now where do I start when everything is so cool.

CaptainChaos- glad to hear from you. :)

Image

On Chimera- When Shock brought up the idea of Chimera, I flashed on a fun older (2000) bio-punk tv show called Dark Angel. Manticore is an underground government super soldier program (sound familiar?) First season was really good. Second season got.. odd.. very odd. Most of my thinkings about how the overall story arch of Chimera would go. The heroes would go in to shut things down and free the inmates and then deal with reintroducing them into a fearful world... or help them hide in the shadows. Yes, Blitz is one of the pretty ones and could be a public face for the group. Marie could be the survivor, putting a paradoxically human face on the evil the group represents- 'This is who we fight for'. The government could be interested in both of them.

Mr Fix- an odd balance of a predestination and free will. I see him as a recurring hero from the future that goes back in time to set things right. First version was in a Terminator like setting. Second version as a refugee of a biocrisis caused by Chimera- borrowing heavily from Palladium's After The Bomb setting.

Bimbofication- I suspect that this is a common story. It was one of my plotlines from an early version of Eldritch in tabletop. Awkward young man finds a process to turn himself into a manly man, tall and handsome and athletic and confident.. without glasses that the bullies wouldn't beat up! He finds an older woman, someone that he likes and decides to errrr.. gift? her with the same treatment, turning her into a buxom blonde, having her become his ideal. While he becomes a jerk, she is confused by what her new unwanted body is screaming at her to do and her own sense of self. How society and body models torture us into becoming people we don't want to be. Fun times.
We rise from the ashes so that new legends can be born.

Yay! I did something right!

Dexter would be shocked at what his parents, especially his mother, were up to. They were very Iron Age heroes. Linda in particular was the bendy straw spined scantily clad psychic ninja chick.

And Robert Wong is... I actually don't know if he had powers back then. Maybe he was a werewolf back then too?

Wong was a competent sidekick at the time. See the 2012 Beauty and the Beast series for more inspiration. I've also played with him having Jimmy Olsen alternate powers running on the Rule of Funny.

Also, Waheed going serious would be kinda interesting. To borrow from Worm terminology, what manner of Tinker specialty would he have?

Whatforis Worm?

Not to mention Charley - dude's a Cape Geek, so he's probably got loads of potential plot hooks.

Speaking of Jimmy Olsen...

And can I just confirm whether my personal guess was right? That Ariel is actually a Tech-Hero or something? She was that flying-saucer chick that raced Celestial, wasn't she? Wasn't she?

She was. While her flesh was dying around her, she used the suit so that her spirit could soar. Not too sure that she would be a Tech-Hero so much as an adrenaline junkie.

So yeah...every wonder who the icy dragon lady on Sing's arm was? Or who the 'Iron Shadow' was?

And as to the "Samaritan Harem"... Would you believe that I never intended that to happen? It just sort of... happened. I mean, I'm not complaining - it's hilarious fun because Dexter can't see himself as the object of girls' attention, but they are anyways.

So, I like harem anime series. I''m not ashamed of it at all. Really... really?

I also didn't know Mr. Fix was the Wolfman!!! :o :!: What a twist!

I mention this in the above post. And yes, the wolfman does have nards.

And witht he AI, I'd assume that Kenneth, Brainiac and technopath he is, probably has one or two lying around? I wouldn't put it past the Lancaster's to have a "Smart Home" that doesn't act up when the kids are home.

Maybe. Probably not in the same way. CADIE's storyline would have introduced several large sharks in the electronic seas that were affiliated with large organizations- like British intelligence.

Also, what's MSS?

Your term "Mad Scientist Syndrome"

And with the Jimmy Woo plot, I half-expected to have the Samaritan swoop in and try to administer medicine for all that Road Rage - Mayhem in the streets! This looks like a job for The Samaritan! :P

I was trying to be careful trying to keep things intertwined and yet separate so the heroes in the martial arts game could be heroes there.

Hackers at a Casino sounded like an awesome idea too, and Neighborhood Watch would have been an interesting vignette/interlude.
We rise from the ashes so that new legends can be born.
