Young Protectors: New Chapel (IC)

Post by Horsenhero »

Championnat Academie-

Located in the Storyvale district of the city of New Chapel, Championnat Academie is an exclusive private school. The waiting list for school admission is long because the graduates often attend the best colleges, but the qualifications for acceptance are eclectic as neither wealth or influence seem to be a guarantee of admittance. Established in 1912 the school would almost immediately achieve scanadlous notoriety for accepting non-white students into a non-segregated program. Remarkably, despite that and a public denouncement by the infamous Alistair Crowley in the 1920's, the school thrived.

The school itself is, in modern times, an architectural oddity. originally contained within a sprawling antebellum mansion, a fire in the 1990's destroyed and entire wing of the school. What replaced the original gothic architecture of that wing was a post modern design, that when merged with the remaining structure combines into a Dali-esque nightmare. The school sits on 10 acres of property complete with stables, boat house and what was once a private chapel. Abutting the property to the south is a cypress swamp and immediately to the east is an old graveyard replete with large mausoleums and stone crypts. Beyond that and wrapping around the rest of the property is the Storyvale district of New Chapel.

Compared to most private schools Championnat Academie has a modest student body, not even exceeding a hundred in all. Championnat also only serves four grade levels, 9-12. Like most private schools Championnat does adhere to a dress code, though it is a bit more eclectic than many as might be expected. Students can wear slacks and vest of either dark gray, navy blue or black, with a light colored button down shirt. Female students can replace the slacks with a skirt or they can opt for a complete ankle length dress with a high necked bodice.

The current headmistress of the school is the subject of of rumor in New Chapel since she rarely makes public appearances, communicating with even the student body mostly through her executive assistant. What is known about her is she is the great-granddaughter of the school's founder and also a descendant of the Voodoo Queen, Marie Laveau.

Ministry of Protection: Schism-

The Young Protectors are aware their very existence is the cause of a massive point of contention within the ranks of the Ministry of protection. While their mentors and others believe that young heroes should be trained and brought into "the life" with guidance, others including the mighty Grand Champion view them as child soldiers being irresponsibly endangered. It was out of this philosophical schism the youthful heroes' current situation arose. In an effort to placate the objecting Protectors and stave off U.N. hearings on the matter, the proteges of various heroes have been enrolled in school and the team no longer invites them to participate in official missions.

On the other side of the debate, members like Io and Mother Knight have witnessed first hand throughout their immortal lives, the consequences of leaving the development of super-human individuals to chance. To satisfy that side of the debate, Ministry assets exclusively for the use of the young heroes have been made available. Grand Champion and several others split off from the Ministry believing the arrangement to be a violation of the spirit, if not the letter of the agreement. Complicating matters further, rumor has it several villains under the leadership of Vanos the Dread Lord of Carpathia have taken on proteges themselves for the express purpose of foiling the development of the next generation of heroes.

YP: Championnat Academie day 1-

The first day at Championnat Academie is fairly typical of orientation day at any school. There is, even with the small size of the student body, a crush of confusion as the new class arrives and the older students try to take their measure. Unlike most schools, the cliques are harder to spot at Championnat because of the eclectic nature of the student body itself.

The orientation is being conducted by a bubbly, flirty, stereotypically southern belle by the name of Joanna. Joanna has opted for the full dress instead of uniform in a brilliant emerald green. Joanna is violating the spirit of the dress code though, because her dress, while high necked, laces up the front and the laces are undone enough that hints of her substantial cleavage are on display.
The beginning! All I need right off hand is a quick description of the PC's first day during orientation. Most students live on campus, though not all, so if your character is living on site as opposed to at the provided HQ, just mention that as well.

This was a bloody travesty! All the Next Gen were benched because the bleedin' hearts at the U.N. and even Grand Champion himself had a tungsten rod up his arse and were going on about 'child soldiers' and 'endangering the young'. Like the London streets for an orphan were any safer and at least Johnny got to do a bit of good. Dangit! His life finally had *meaning* and they take that all away. Like sending them to some posh school was gonna make up for trashing their lives, even splitting the group up. This was all a load of bollocks!

Johnny caught himself and did the deep breathing exercises Alys recommended. Without her around he had to be better about controlling his Anger.

And that was another thing! Who's cocked-up idea was it to separate him from the one person who could keep his Hyde-half under control?

Johnny reached into his pocket and withdrew a squeezy stress-relief ball since the breathing clearly wasn't doing it. He had several. He reminded himself of his training: *He* was the one who could keep his 'other half' in check. *He* could assert control. The Queen of Hearts trusted *Him* to do so himself. And he wasn't here alone. The Half-Atlantean (Do NOT call him Fish Boy), the Wizard (Do NOT ask him to pull a rabbit out of his... anything), the Alien Prosthetic Bearer (Do NOT ask to see her Arm-ageddon.... again), and the Faerie Knight (Don't.... just don't!), were all here with him. They were his comrades, and maybe, some day, his fellow Protectors. He could do this.

All this was the pep talk he'd given himself on the drive over from the separated HQ. He initially didn't trust himself bedding down with the other kids. What if he lost control? What if the Ministry called and needed him in the middle of the night? The option to move to campus was still on the table, and maybe Johnny would still switch, but at least today in was the HQ for him.

Thus, it was a broody Johnny Diamond that started the orientation day but much of that changed around when the pretty debutante, Joanna took lead of their group.

"Hello there, Beautiful!" Johnny starts in, letting his natural cockney thicken on the basis that it'd make him exotic. "There must be some greenhouse growing cold, deprived of the radiance of your smile." he says smoothly.

Blitz (Emily Marie Powers)
HP: 1 / Cond: Normal

I miss my old school already.. Emily complained to herself while Joanna droned on. Not being a teenaged boy, she couldn't muster the rapt attention the boys were giving their orientation giver. She shifted the heavy bag hanging at her right side and brooded a little. The red-head opted for navy slacks and vest over a plain white button down with two-third length cuffless sleeves, given that cuff buttons were kind of hard one-armed, the left arm sleeve folded and pinned up.

She rolls her shoulders to adjust her bag strap again, the duffel looking a bit out of place to the backpacks and messenger bags carried by her fellow students. When asked about it, she waves it off as the bag being easier than a backpack for her to manage and more spacious than a messenger bag so she can carry tools and mechanics projects along with her school books... not mentioning the alien prototype weapon she was also toting around in there.

The bag had been Audra's idea, and Emily hadn't really liked it at first. Audra had suggested it since the arm would blend in a little among other mechanical things so could be carried around to be at least near by if Emily needed it quickly, but also, by learning a mechanical trade, Emily would learn skills that, while useful just on their own, might offer inspire her with insight to the workings of the alien prototype. It also meant Emily was lugging this heavy bag back and forth from HQ, since she wasn't about to risk some snoop poking about in a dorm room and finding an alien weapon.

Can we pleeeease be done with orientation so I can put this bag down? Emily complains internally, but stubbornly keeps the bag on her shoulder rather than setting it down, or looking too uncomfortable with the weight that someone might offer to take it for her. Fat chance she was casually going to hang over a bag full of her books, alien weaponry and tools.

At least she knew some people here, other proteges she'd crossed paths with in the past, it was a small comfort to combat leaving her old school friends behind at her old school for this...odd... private school.

Blade of Poseidon (D'n W'ren/Dan Warren)
HP: 1
Cnd: Fine

D'an tugged at the collar of his shirt as he followed the crowd of new students. The clothes felt too restrictive after being accustomed to the robes the sages wore at the temple. His blond hair, tied into a tight ponytail, whipped from left to right as his head spun every which as he took in every new thing he came across. His emerald eyes positively gleamed with excitement at all the new sights and sounds.

He wove his way through the crowd like a fish swimming through water as he walked up to Johnny. They'd met at the quarters the Ministry had appointed to them, but much like everything else around D'an, he didn't know much about the other young hero. He followed his gaze to the girl giving the tour. D'an casually wondered how her clothing would fare moving under water. It seemed heavy and impractical. "Do you like her?" He asked the question, not quietly, like a person to whom subtlety was an unfamiliar concept.

Johnny Diamond, Knave of Hearts/Jack Clubs

His smile falters only for a moment. "Uh.... Dan, wann't it? Yeah, Bruv. She's pretty keen an this whole school is aces. What's not to like?" he lies easily. "A few years here an we'll be shiny nobs, right and proper!"

D'an's mouth worked silently as he worked his way to what he'd just heard. Finally he nodded. "Yes, I'm Dan. And you're Johnny, wann't it? I'm still getting used to everything here." He looked around expectantly, like he thought this nobbing was the next item on the tour.

"Just stick wif..." he hesitated at offering himself, Dan seemed a bit square... "uh... Ronan here." he directs the aquarian to the mage acolyte. "He'll sort you out."
[Ronan's backstory has him training with Mother Knight for at least 4 years. I figure he'd be known.

"Right, thanks." D'an nodded, moving off to look for Ronan as he took in everything around him with a sense of awe.

Warlock (Ronan Greenwood)
HP: 1
Condition: Damage control

Up in his dorm room, Ronan checked himself out in the mirror one last time, tucking a few errant strands of chestnut hair back under the navy-blue ribbon holding his brief ponytail in place, pushed a small fold of his pale blue shirt back under the slim brown leather belt, and smoothed out an imaginary crease in his slim-fit navy slacks. Momentarily satisfied, he makes to leave, and almost immediately stops, catching another look at himself "Too stiff". He wiggles about a little, replacing the impression that he'd just rolled out of a clothes press with something rather more natural "Much better. Can't let people know that you try." With one final glance, he strides out of the dorm to the orientation.

Ronan flashes Joanna a quick smile as he joins the group before turning his attention to his new classmates; pubescent hormones leaving one side of his peripheral vision firmly nailed to Joanna's cleavage, whilst the other observed Emily's increasing discomfort. Without looking at her, he discreetly gives her a little telekinetic assistance fervently hoping that even if she put two and two together, she wouldn't come up with four. Ronan had been on the receiving end of her anger once before, when he rather blithely suggested that, instead of playing about with her machines, she just learn magic, and make spell to regrow her arm, and had no wish to repeat the experience.

A moment later, his attention is refocused on the group as Johnny fires his opening salvo at their guide, causing Ronan to cringe internally in response "Oof". The situation rapidly deteriorated, as D'n appeared and made the interaction awkward in way that only someone who'd spent most of their life in an underwater temple could "He needs an altogether different kind of orientation". Things then go from bad to worse as Johnny lumps him with babysitting duty "Knave indeed". Holding back a groan, Ronan acknowledges the half-Atlantean with a nod, and a half smile "Dan. Making trouble already?". Simultaneously, he telepathically projects a somewhat different message "Hey, gills, try and say as little as possible until you've got a better handle on things. If we've got some free time later, come find me and I'll give you some pointers on being a surface-worlder.". He pauses for a moment, and then adds "Do not respond to these words out loud". As this thought leaves him, another quickly pulls into the station "If I pretend D'n is a foreigner and child of family friends, or whatever, I might be able to get bonus points for taking him "under my wing". Could work".

D'an looked around with a look of confused concern at Ronan's words, before his face lit up when he received the telepathic message. Instead of replying verbally he nodded in return, a wide grin spreading on his features. He stepped through the crowds again, something else already having caught his interest.

"That looks heavy." The words were aimed at Emily. D'an's face was an open book, no hint of mock or pity in his voice.
"Can I help?" Again, nothing there but an earnest wish to help.

Blitz (Emily Marie Powers)
HP: 1 / Cond: Normal

Emily immediately felt the subtle lightening of her bag and while she didn't make any large, overt reaction to it, she did scan the group of students for any familiar faces, catching Ronan, piecing two and two together, and giving him a slight glare for his trouble.

Anyone who has known Emily for more than five minutes knows she is a prideful girl, perhaps too much so and it isn't that she doesn't know how to ask for help when feels she needs it or recognizes she needs it, but more that she tends to resent help being given to her without her asking as if she can't manage on her own. Of course, that means she tends to repay innocent gestures with pride-stung glares. Of course, she doesn't give any kind of gesture for Ronan to stop either.

When D'an comes to at least ask if she wants help, Emily shakes her head. "It's fine. It's actually a bit lighter than it looks right now." Emily shoots another look at Ronan then back to D'an. "Besides, I need to get used to carrying it for myself. Can't always rely on someone asking, or assuming, I need help. Anyone whose know Emily for more than 5 minutes also knows she tends to play the tough girl. It's nothing personal, more overcompensating for her visually obvious handicap and something Audra has regularly told her she needs to work on.

Ronan mentally breathes a sigh of relief as D'n gave about as normal a response as could be hoped for. The relief was short-lived, however, as the half-Atlantean wandered off again, looking for more trouble to stumble into. Turning his attention back to his non-powered peers, Ronan maintains an outwardly impassive expression, apparently oblivious to Emily's glares, only a ghost of a smile suggesting this might not be the case. Out of the corner of his eye, he observes with interest as D'n directly offers to help Emily, and she doesn't immediately self-combust "I guess the whole innocence thing still works, huh? Good to know."

The Tour-

"Okay everyone," Joanna announces. "it looks like everyone is here, so all you new victims follow me."

What follows is a tour which lasts about an hour, during which Joanna's enthusiasm doesn't dampen in the least, despite the fact she is wearing a full dress in September heat and humidity. She dutifully shows the students the dormitories, cafeteria and classrooms making certain to point out. "The wine cellar is off limits. My apologies to our European students, but in the USA people under 21 years old are not legally allowed to drink liquor. Rumors you may hear about students throwing unauthorized parties off campus are just rumors. Remember that if the staff ever busts you for drinking."

At the boat house: "There are several flat bottomed boats available for student use if you're checked out on their use. Some students enjoy fishing. It should be noted that despite the fact there have been no students lost to the swamp in over a decade, there are Alligators and snakes that could be dangerous. There have been no confirmed sightings of any swamp monsters...but we can always hope."

Outside the chapel: "The old church is off limits by order of the Headmistress. It is locked, boarded up and there are claymore mines set as a curious noob deterrent. Just kidding about the mines, but the rest is serious. The chapel is structurally unsound and dangerous. Don't go there."

At the stables: "The horses are available for those who can ride. If you want to ride there are a couple rules. The school does not supply grooms or stablehands, so equestrian activities also involve mucking stalls and grooming horses. Don't over feed the horses treats. Too many treats and they start to demand treats. Pushy horses that bite aren't a heap of fun."

Near the graveyard: "Don't trespass in the graveyard. There are zombies and the local voodoo priestesses and houngans get annoyed if they have to placate the living dead too often." She laughs. "Seriously though, if caught you can be ticketed for trespassing and that makes the Headmistress cranky."

Back at the entrance: "Okay, it is permitted for students to go into New Chapel at your leisure, as long as you don't ditch class. The folks here in Storyvale are used to us and won't bat an eye if you go in school uniform. Beyond Storyvale, New Chapel is...to paraphrase a film...a wretched hive of scum and villainy and you might find your school uniforms the subject of mockery. Normal civilian fashion might go over better."

"To answer questions some of you might have...no, I am not wearing a bustle under this dress. This booty is one hundred percent mine."

"No. I never get drunk and flash the girls at parties. Trust me, if I did this school would be a national landmark, treasured by all."

"On to the boring stuff; truancy will get you an audience with the headmistresses' assistant. Fighting will get you an audience with the headmistresses assistant. Drugs on campus will get you an audience with headmistresses assistant. Legal troubles in New Chapel will earn you an audience with the headmistresses assistant. Cheating on school work or tests is handled by the staff unless it becomes a habit, then you get an audience with the headmistresses assistant. Essentially bad enough behavior will get you an audience with the headmistresses assistant, which and I cannot stress this enough...you do not want."

"Breakfast is served between 7 and 8 am. Classes start at 9 and go until 3 with an hour for lunch at noon."

"We try to have a bomb-ass time here while still getting a top flight education and we...the student body...hope you will continue that tradition."

"Are there any questions? Any questions not related to how you can get to see me naked, that is."

D'An nodded to Emily's response. "A strong soul resides in a strong mind and a strong body."

When the tour started Joanna held D'An's rapt attention, though it was mostly for the veritable deluge of information she had to offer.

He followed along happily, taking in everything with excitedly but remembering Ronan's advice about listening quietly more. O'shana was right, he was already learning so much from them.
