Red Nova: Five Years Later

Post by MissRo »

"Sergeant Michael P. Sanderson."

A bell rang, its somber tone echoing through the gymnasium.

"Officer Gregory S. Savage."

Another chime of the bell. Despite the mass of people that had gathered to pay their respects, it was so quiet that one could hear each ring fade away into silence before the next name was read. She wasn't surprised at such a turnout; the NYPD had always been a close-knit family, and they grieved for their fallen together as a unit.

"Officer Kellyanne D. Sawyer."

Caitlin Ryan stood among the crowd, willing with every fiber of her being that the chaplain would stop reading there. It had been five years since that day, but the wounds it had left were just as fresh as if it had been yesterday. The extremis had healed her broken body, but it could not heal her broken heart. It was an entirely irrational hope; she'd watched him die. Still all she could do was mentally plead for his name not to be next, not to be on that list at all. 'Not him. Please not him'.

"Officer Travis L. Scott."

Her hand went to her mouth as she choked back a sob. Her head swam... someone to her left, a woman, reached out to comfort her, rubbing her shoulder gently. Tears stung her eyes and turned the crowd around her to a blur. She didn't even register Travis's chime.

'If only I'd had this then,' she thought, looking at her hand, flexing it. 'I could have done something. I would have done something. I'd have burnt every last one of those goddamn monsters to ash.' Her heart was ringing in her ears. 'I would have saved you, Travis. I swear to God I would have saved you.'

A large hand grasped her by the shoulder then, and her father's comforting voice pierced through her building rage.

"Deep breath, kiddo. Deep breath."

The tears were gone when she looked up, evaporated in an instant against the blistering heat of her skin. Sweat beaded down her father's face, and the woman beside her cradled her burned hand protectively. Caitlin took a deep breath and drew herself back, swallowed down the inferno within her that begged for release.

"Yeah, pop. Thanks. I'm good."

The weather is a perfectly sunny day. As the service ends and the crowd starts to file out of the gymnasium, you and your father step aside. A small group of officers from the station house have gathered just off the school grounds to share a smoke. As a favor to the NYPD SHIELD has released you into your father's care a few months ago. He had has worried the ceremony might be too much for you, but trusted you when you told him you would be okay. You can sense his and your own need to join your former brothers to talk and share stories from the Incident.

As the two of you step down toward the street, you get the feeling of something passing overhead. You've spent enough time at a SHIELD facility, learning to control your abilities, to know when a cloaked ship has passed overhead. Across Sunset Avenue is the Green-Wood Cemetery. There are enough woods throughout the old graveyard that when you limbs move on a windless day you're sure something has landed behind the chapel.

Caitlin had expected it to be a difficult day. Although she'd mourned her partner's loss in her heart, this was the first time in the five years since his death that she'd been able to attend a memorial in his honour. She'd still been comatose when they buried him, and AIM had kept her on ice in the time since. Everyone else had had the benefit of time to begin their healing. To her, it was all still very raw.

She trailed after her father, smiling when spoken to and shaking and occasional hand. She was genuinely happy to be among so many friendly, familiar faces, but she was still rattled. What she really wanted was a pint of Guinness in a dark, dank hole in the wall somewhere. Thankfully her old man had always been able to read her mind, so when he made an excuse to leave on her behalf she mentally hugged him.

They'd just turned to leave when she sensed something pass overhead, seemingly descending behind the cemetary's chapel. She frowned. What the hell was this, now of all times?

"Pop, I'm gonna take a walk. Clear my head a bit."

"Your mother'll kill me if you're not home for supper. Aunt Audrey and Uncle Bert are coming over."

"Thanks for the warning," she said with a wry smirk. "I'll take the long way."

He laughed, gave her a pat on the back, and they parted. Caitlin waited until he was out of sight before darting across Sunset Avenue to investigate the disturbance.

The streets are crowded as the services are concluding. Hundreds of people, officers and their families slowly making their way to their cars. Cars that are parked on the road and the cemetery's parking lot across the street. As you make your way through the crowd of mourners the sound of the disgruntled can be heard. Cell service is apparently dead and you see more than one person frustrated as they cannot seem to get their cars to start.

Stepping up on the curb with at a brisk pace, you make your way to the side of the chapel. The sound of a door being forced open reaches you before you approach the corner of the building. Your the kind of person who runs toward the fire, not away, but you were a cop and the daughter of a cop. You might have a temper but reckless you're not. As you cautiously spy around the corner you glimpse the shimmer and the closing of a door very similar to that of a cloaked Quinjet.

Through the broken door, you hear the muffled sounds of another breaking door.

Caitlin was baffled. A cloaked aircraft in the middle of the city? Here to... break into the chapel? It was too bizarre a situation to walk away from, but she knew she had to be careful. SHIELD had taken a chance when they'd given her some leeway. It wouldn't take much to convince them to withdraw it.

She checked her phone and... nothing. A coincidence that everyone's phones go on the fritz just as this thing shows up? Possible, but unlikely. She didn't like it one bit. She'd never known when to walk away; this was not going to be when she figured it out. She activated her exothermic aura and, with her eyes peeled, slipped around the corner headed for the door.

Heels never were your first choice as a teenager and today, wearing the rubber soles of your uniform shoes serves you well as you make your way into the back of the chapel. The broken door lies hanging off it's bottom hinge at an odd angle. The door creaks as you have to step on it to enter. It sounds like a gunshot to you, only giving you motivation to hurry along. You hear sounds coming from the sanctuary and ...

Peering through the door you see three ...

Caitlin drew her gun and raised it as she stepped through the smashed doorframe.

"Freeze! Drop your weapons!"

In the back of the basement room you see one of the three aliens using his weapon on the concrete floor, the other two soldiers turn toward you. Heavy autoblasters in their hands. <"Siew Terran próbuje ingerować w naszych braci misji. Musi zostać wyeliminowana, jeśli tak ... ">

Is the last of what you hear as two of the alien soldiers turn and open fire upon you, the blaster's high pitched sound deafeningly silent of the quite of the chapel. One striking you numbingly in the left thigh.
Red Nova needs to make a DC20 saves versus the sonic blaster.

Caitlin's eyes grew wide as her brain struggled to process what she was seeing.

What? What!?

Then one of them winged her, and snapped her out of the daze. She dropped the gun. They'd stoked the fire she'd been struggling to choke down all morning. It was time to let it out.

Her hands began to glow a bright red-orange as she channeled the heat of her rage and lunged wildly for the nearest alien.
