Going Rogue: IC thread; Overrun

Chapter 2: Overrun

Bay City 2 weeks later.

Morpheus stands near a window overlooking the City Proper. Specifically the San Jose portion where the small office building he has purchased has been set up. Behind him Portia dutifully signs for some packages setting them aside save one that she brings to him with out comment. He thanks her gifting her with a warm smile as she does before opening the package.

Inside the package he checks the contents and nods approvingly.

"Come Portia its time to bring our friends in for their new jobs." he says with a hint of humor poking through in a rare display that only Portia has ever been privy to.

As the pair walk out of the office behind them a couple of workers finish putting up a sign near the receptionist desk. the sign in big bold letters above the symbol of a group of Spartan warriors in a tight formation reads one word.

PHALANXE

--ooOoo--

The past two weeks have been relatively quiet for the team as Morpheus insisted that each of you take a brief break from your endeavors and get some well deserved rest.

Oaf was escorted by Uplift to Sanctuary to visit his friend Lucy, and so Uplift could give a lecture on Force Field mechanics to no less then 6 of the Superhuman worlds top minds. One fo whom turned out to be Hornet of the Protectors who was their on hero business it turned out. a brief conversation between the two tech geniuses insued but that's neither here nor there.

Portia, and Morpheus all but vanished though Portia at least was around for some of the week though she was cryptic about what was happening when she was gone with Morpheus, and Morpheus aside from a brief conversation with Sebastian was all but absent.

Power Fist of all people was the sole one of the group that actually engaged in some impromptu heroics as she took on the techno arsonist Blowtorch and put him away before he could detonate a series of plasma bombs that would have incinerated a lot of innocent people and casued a massive drop in property damage that would have filled his pockets and the pockets of a local crime boss with a lot of money. She had some help in this with Protector Shock who aided her in the investigative phase and in finally bringing Blowtorch to justice. The two parted on friendly terms.

Mr Sebastians absence was also brief but when he returned he had a somewhat grim expression on his face. He was unwilling to discuss the matter save for a brief conversation in private with Morpheus which neither would reveal the substance of save that Morpheus left on mysterious business soon after.

Its thus two weeks later that everyone returns from their break refreshed and ready. While waiting in the living room of the manor engaging in some light conversation which even Sebastian-- seemingly recovered from what ever experience had him on edge--took part in his mood seemingly vastly improved.

At this moment Portia appears and asks everyone to join her for a field trip to meet Morpheus who has a surprise for everyone.

Everyone

"Does this spell transport everything within the boundary or just what is designated by the user?"

The sorcerer shrugged, hiding the wince from the leftover memories of bruises from his and Uplift's previous altercation with "Battalion". "Honestly, it would depend on the variation they use. Translocation spells work pretty simply. The five markers form a pentagram-circle around what you want to move. The sixth acts like a homing beacon for the spell to lock onto. When the spell is complete, the circle translocates to re-center itself on the sixth marker, bringing with it whatever was 'bound' to the circle."

Taking another sip from the flute, Sebastian waved his hand dismissively, the drink disappearing as easily as it appeared. "But what you bind to the circle depends on how you cast the spell. So, it's really up in the air. But the more complex the limitations, the more difficult the spell, so it's possible they'll just go for a spell that's indiscriminate, or somehow explicitly single-target. I doubt they're skilled enough to pull off something too complex."

"I mean, I wouldn't have that much trouble, but I'm a sorcerer. So unless they're getting outside help from someone who's Walked the Weird Ways, they'll probably be going for a simpler variation, if they're using magic at all."

"As I suspected, he's been smart and kept his vault off the network. Now who is home?"
Uplift does a quick check of the grounds and sees a contingent of security guards about an even dozen in all, trained mercs if hes any judge of such things. theyre on standard patrols and aren't on any sign of readiness or alert. He does see one merc in the vault on patrol who stops kneels down and checks something on the floor then stands up and moves on only to kneel down again a few meters later. He notices this guard do this 3 more times in total.

"For a job like this, they could use somebody with teleportation powers, though mass and weight issues would probably require several trips. You might also be able to get a mass transporter for non-organic matter, though unless you were suitably educated, you'd require somebody to be able to configure it correctly, otherwise they would be likely to end up with a slagheap that possibly wasn't gold anymore." He listed off a few possibilities, "of course, we could use my favourite and dig up into the vault with a heavy mole machine and transport it out that way. Again, several trips though considering the weight and mass involved. At least nobody can see your vehicle. I may have done something similar in the past." The last comment he directed at Colonel Dusk.

Thinking for a second, he quickly checked his messages for the Mechanic just in case they had tried to message and hire him for the job.
As he looks at his messages while watching the guard do this kneel and touch the ground routine he finds that beyond the usual run of work requested by guys like the Beetle, Scorpion, the Shocker and other low rent types he hasn't had anyone notable call in or a job offer of the type these guys are about.

"Can you compare what you see with the blueprints? We could use as accurate a map as possible," Dusk requested of Uplift. She then turned to Sebastian, "Could you find and disrupt one of these markers for this translocation spell?" Dusk was slowly thinking of a plan of action, just needed to get the experts to weigh in with some more info.
"Also Uplift run a quick search, if they do have a means of moving that much bullion instantaneously they need a place for it to go to." Morpheus adds in

"If I recall my own knowledge of such things the person who casts the spell has to be the one to draw and manifest all the markers, and since records show that none of the brothers or their duplicates have left the city in the last week that means the drop off point must be here in Bay City."

The Shadow-Man
HP: 2?

"True, the caster would be the one to place the markers. Unless they're using an Onmyodo variation, but that would require actual paper tags with sigils and glyphs of power inscribed on them, rather than metaphysical markers." Sebastian steeples his fingers for a moment before looking away. A thought just occurred to him, that he felt warranted at least a little consideration.

"By the way, are any of these three academics? Translocation spells are notoriously advanced for a burgeoning practitioner. So where would they learn such a spell? By getting their hands on a grimoire, or learning it from a tome? Or did someone give them the scrolls, or teach them how to pull it off?" wondered the sorcerer, aloud.
Uplift
HP 2

He quickly checked for the information that Morpheus asked about, but his attention was on the mercenary at the vault to figure out what he was doing.

Is Gnalthor around do we know?

Dusk looked at Morpheus, a bit of confusion added to her usually stern countenance, "Morpheus, are you banking on them succeeding in this theft and then finding them?" she asked, "I've no objections to figuring out where they're going in case they manage it but it seems more prudent to me to try and stop the theft in the first place."

And boom were caught up here

I think ill advance us as is then well hold a recruit drive to replace oaf and Powerfist

Portia
HP : 1
Condition : normal

"It does not hurt to keep all bases covered." Portia replied to Dusk, "We could get into the vault and wait for them to show up, and ambush them there.

But there is always a chance that one of them might escape with some gold; we don't know if they need all of it.

Once they escape, they would be hard to track down. If there were some way to make the gold detectable - like a small tracker or beacon spell - we could find them even if one of them got away. Given how organized they are, I doubt any would sell out the others."

"Yes... like a like a small tracker or beacon spell..." Dusk echoes as she glances in the general direction of Uplift and Shadow-Man.

Uplift

"A tracking beacon wouldn't be a problem, though the trick would be to get them to take the gold we want them to take." Uplift twiddled with a pen as he spoke, "another option could be a compound sprayed on the gold that emits a signature we can track."

Morpheus looks thoughtful for a moment before replying "We might actually want to consider letting them take the gold."

Before anyone can register any disapproval He adds in "We know from the investigation we've completed so far that they must have a buyer lined up to take possession, by letting them abscond with the ill gotten loot they lead us right to the buyer."

"We put up a token resistance to insure they feel that they've earned their escape, and then via Uplifts tech, or Mr. Sebastians more mystical means we track and sweep up buyer and thieves in one fell swoop."

Dusk huffed at the thought of letting someone get the better of her. Though on further consideration he had a point, "Fine," Dusk agreed. "Now about being at the vault in the first place," she started, "Unless the owner is convinced to hire on extra security we'll look like trespassers as well."

Morpheus looks thoughtful for a moment before a shrewd look crosses his face. "Oh I believe I can arrange that."

"Mr Sebastain?" He asks the black clad mage sitting nearby with who has a somewhat distant look on his face as shadows whisper secrets to him "Your thoughts?"

The Shadowman

"I can set up tracker-spells on the gold, but I would need to be close enough to actually touch the metal. If it were silver, on the other hand, I have oh so many more thing I could do with silver! But gold... I would either need to be there to place a tracker, or to search for the markings of a translocation spell." Sebastian pitched in.

"Then again, a beacon might be better provided by Uplift. Mystical tracking spells are... not always as user friendly as homing-signals based in electronics and physics." Shrugging, the sorcerer turned his head to the side, glancing over his shoulder at something unseen before looking back at the others. "Though, the thought occurs that more options become available if we toss subtlety out the window."

Uplift

“Probably simplest then to go with an isotope that will be detectable a little bit later after being sprayed so that they don’t detect it upon the initial theft.”

Everyone

"Very good everyone; Ill make arraignments for our insertion into the vault as security services, Uplift and Mr Sebastian please make your preparations. I'll contact everyone shortly when were ready."

Morpheus leaves the room stopping only briefly to speak to Oaf where he lays a reassuring hand on the Gentle Giants shoulder before moving on.

Lets see Ill forgo the usual time requirements for such preparations

Sebastian will need a DC 15 Arcane lore check to create basically a simple cantrip that detects any item or group of items placed on it.

Uplift will require a similar DC 15 tech check to create basically a nanotech spray that can be detected at long range

Dusk can make a DC 20 military check to have some insight into these three thieves Portia can aid this with a DC 15 criminal check

Dusk nodded, "I'll be ready, you all know what to do," Dusk first went to retrieve her equipment before sitting down to watch all the current footage they had of the criminals, studying it while polishing her sword and shield.

Portia
HP : 1
Condition : normal
Aid vs DC15 Criminal check _: 1D20+7 = [7]+7 = 14
That was - underwhelming.
With +5 thanks to Team Work, only yields a 19. One degree of success for a +2 bonus, if needed.
Portia attempted to help Dusk, figuring that while criminals may be organized, they aren't quite using military organization.

But she may have been 'out of the game' for too long to be of much help.

Sebastian Blackwood
HP: 3

It hadn't taken long. Merely conjuring up the right tome from the library, reading a few pages and cross-referencing to make sure he got his measurements right. Then Sebastian fetched the proper reagents, cleared out a little space to work with, and etched out a rudimentary magical circle to contain his energies. Several minutes of incantations later, a little smoke, mirrors, and burning eye of newt and Sebastian crafted his spell. Now to wait for the others to finish with their preparations, and the group could be on their way. Perhaps later, when they were done with this mission, he could find some time to himself and see about figuring out how to get Darkholme to stop nagging him about babies every time he went back.
I have a +14 modifier. I couldn't fail that check even if I rolled a 1... I mean, I could roll to see how much faster I could get it done, but you say ignore time req's.
