Picture Book
Reality Artist

Background
Origin
· Ashley Knight was a young housewife and children’s book author when Istvatha Vhan’s invasion took the world by surprise. Her house was in one of the first areas struck, and as she was leading her family to take shelter in the basement, it was hit by a plummeting alien craft. She awoke to find a strange multicolored dome of paint sealing off the stairs above her.
· She staggered out of the basement to find her house a smoldering crater, her family nowhere to be seen, and strange paint dripping from her hands. She quickly realized that if she described something to be true while painting it, it came to life.
· When her powers manifested, Ashley knew she had to use them to do the right thing. She slapped paint on her face to hide her identity and rushed out to sweep away the flames licking at the houses around hers.
· Over the following years, she quickly became a well-known figure as she snuffed fires, shored up buildings, fixed bridges, and assisted in many disaster relief projects across the state.
· A tabloid shock piece featuring unfounded rumors that Istvatha had returned convinced her that she couldn’t just help after things went wrong. She resolved herself to take the fight to wrong-doers, and made the leap from costumed do-gooder to costumed hero.

Personality
· Ashley is a kind and matronly individual, slow to anger and quick to forgive. She has a bad habit of not stopping speaking when she pauses to think and is hesitant to interrupt when she doesn’t understand something.

Appearance
· Ashley is a middle-age Caucasian woman with brown hair, blue eyes, and a little more weight than she’d like. Before heading out for heroics, she repaints herself to look much younger and slimmer.
· Her costumes vary, but are always conservative and include a sky-blue book with a paintbrush on the cover as part of the outfit.

Narrative Attributes
Motivation
· Helping Others: Ashley was caught at the center of a super-disaster and wants to do anything she can to make sure nobody has to suffer like her city did.

Complications
· Softhearted: Ashley can’t stand to see others suffer, even if more important things are occurring or they brought it upon themselves.
· Idealistic: Ashley firmly believes that everyone is good at heart and people only do bad things because they’re in bad circumstances.
· Rookie: Ashley has experience using her powers to fight disasters, but hasn’t yet fought crime.
· Secret Identity
· Antiquated: Ashley has trouble with modern slang and doesn't really get these new social phone and smart media thingies.
· Power Loss: While Picture Book’s powers are mainly mental, she requires narration and art to focus her mind. Any powers she activates while unable to speak clearly function at half rank, and she cannot switch between Alternate Effects or reallocate Variables if unable to draw.
· Power Loss: The power that Picture Book’s painting has over reality is fickle when opposed by other artists. Expertise: Art and similar skills can be used to Counter Costume Swap, Set Scene, and Grand Flourish.
· Mystery: Ashley has no clue why she has her powers. Mutant power, blessing from the muses, cosmic energy, divine heritage, irradiated drinking water, it could be anything.

Design Notes
Character Comments
· I wanted something to do with scenery and environmental control and was flipping through some old books, and figured that an illustrator sounded like a fun way to bring environmental manipulation into play.
· A bit more development later, I decided that fairy-tale style art seemed most fun, so picture book illustrator powers it was. The motherly character mostly followed from that point.

Mechanical Comments
· Battlefield control, how I love thee. Not really as prominent in M&M, but still a fun role to fill in a party because you get to make other people really shine.
· There’s some fun stuff in this one with the expansion from illustration to storytelling, and a lot of room for really strange Stunts if occasion arises.

Implementation Notes
· Creative Liberties is effectively an unlimited duration for a single Power Stunt.

It's been fun coming up with the concept background!

Funny thing is, I am just getting back from vacation, saw your post and followed the link to my sheet to review it. Then I notice the final 1/3 of my backstory about how Zhou ultimately left the Vale nor his complications. Because they are still in a word document on my phone! At the office now, but I'll get the background & complications up this evening!

Image
Player Name: Chubbyninja28

Identity: Sucker Punch

Weight: 155lbs
Eyes: Light blue
Hair: black, crew cut
Costume: Motorcycle pads, Tactical vest, black ninja style head wrapping, reinforced motorcycle gloves and goggles

Power Descriptions:

As Dexter believes himself to be a ninja, most of his abilities he goes a bit over the top with.

When he "communes with the ancient ninja spirits", it's really near by beetles passing messages to each other for him.

When he uses his "ninja telekinesis" to knock an item off a shelf, it's the beetles again.

When Dexter calls upon the "strength of the bear" his body is actually taking on the attributes of a beetle's proportional strength. It's the same with "Protection of the Tortoise"...carapace covers his body in a protective shell.

History:

Dexter Lee was born and then quickly abandoned by his parents, given up for adoption after signing of the birth certificate. From a young age, Dexter had a love for all things martial arts. Power Rangers, Karate Kid, Jackie Chan films, if it had fighting in it you can bet he had seen it. Most parents would pass Dexter over after they saw his room, they either saw his hobby as too violent or just unpleasant to think about.
Dexter would hope and pray that one day someone who shared a similar passion for the martial arts would take him from that orphanage, sadly they never showed up.

The care taker of the orphanage did her best to discourage his borderline obsession with all forms of violent entertainment, even going as far as raiding his room at one point and emptying it of anything violent. The janitor for the facility felt a pang of guilt for his part in the search and seizure so as a way to make amends, the janitor invited Dexter to his storage room one day and introduced Dexter to, what he would recount as, the single deciding factor in his path of martial greatness. It was a comic book called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The turtles didn't interest Dexter much, they seemed like most of the other 90's era heroes. Nothing more than a think tank's attempt at a sale. Dexter then saw his first foot ninja, then Shredder himself, and from that moment on he was hooked.
"So what do you think?" the janitor asked.
"I wanna be a ninja!" Dexter Replied with a renewed furver.

Time passed and, sure enough, Dexter was never adopted. Being the only place Dexter had truly ever lived, the orphanage gave him a job that paid enough to support a studio apartment a few blocks away. Dexter, like the man who inspired him, was the orphanage janitor. Dexter and his mentor would care for the building and it's occupants by day. Night time was another story. Every night Dexter would scour the internet and local papers for anything he could find pertaining to ninjas and ninjutsu training. Dexter would even train in his apartment, much to the displeasure of his downstairs neighbors.

One night in early August while scouring a few websites, Dexter happened upon a supposed scroll of ancient ninja secrets for sale. Dexter had been tricked before, so before committing to the purchase he sent the owner an email asking for any form of preview he could receive. The scroll's owner sent Dexter a few half pictures of the scroll, which sent Dexter into excited whooping. It was legitimate, and Dexter had to have it. After the online exchange Dexter's attitude at work was nothing but far off staring glee. Once the package arrived, however; Dexter couldn't stop swearing.

Somehow the package had been damaged. Dexter could tell due to the fact that the sides of the box the scroll was still sealed in were bulging and felt slimy to the touch. Dexter took the package to his table, after laying down some newspaper first of course, and cut open the tape with a kitchen knife. Thousands of little black beetles came crawling out of the box covering his table in seconds. Dexter screamed and toppled backwards at the terrible sight. The more distance Dexter put between himself and the box the more beetles seemed to pour out of it. They covered the table and were spilling onto the floor, the box disappeared as more beetles ate their way through the cardboard. Quickly, Dexter sprawled for his vacuum cleaner and began sucking up the little devils as fast as he could. Full to bursting, Dexter ran his vacuum down the three fights of steps outside his apartment and abandoned his bug filled utensil.

When Dexter returned to his room, sitting in the middle of his table were the remnants of the cardboard box. Tentatively, Dexter inched toward it and pushed back the shreds to reveal an untouched, wax sealed scroll. Dexter snatched it up, broke the seal and began reading. The ancient Japanese, while wore out, was still readable and Dexter followed it's curved lined kanji with all the focus he had. Unfortunately, this was not a 'how to' scroll, it was an incantation scroll, and Dexter read it aloud. Once Dexter had finished reading, the kanji jumped from the scroll, causing Dexter to throw it across the room. Ancient Japanese text swirled and twirled in the air around him. Their lines and curves faded to a tornado of green colored smoke and suddenly vanished with the sound of a fart. Dexter felt no different.

Dexter, while impressed, felt a bit tricked. He strode over to the fallen scroll and checked it a second time. It was blank, but only for a moment. New kanji was writing itself onto the scroll. Since Dexter was not a scholar, he mispronounced most of the kanji in his incantation so the kanji being written was also written incorrectly.

"Strength of the Bear? Protection of the Tortoise?" Dexter read aloud. Dexter sighed and put the scroll on his table. Maybe everything would make sense in the morning. Dexter calmly went to sleep on his couch and dreamed of ninja things. He awoke the next day to whispers. Not sinister, or anything remotely menacing, just whispers. But the whispers were still there. Dexter placed his hands on his couch to help him sit upright and felt the couch crunch. He looked down and found himself covered in beetles. Half asleep Dexter thought to himself 'I must have missed a few.' Then screamed.

The whispers followed him wherever he went. At home, at work, the park, everywhere. They weren't even whispering about anything interesting, that was the worst part. They commented on people's clothes, were to buy the freshest milk, what breed of trees were in the park, just nonsense. Dexter made it home at his usual time, no amount of whispering was going to affect his work record. After firing up his computer, Dexter went to his usual ninja enthusiast chat room. He told them about the scroll, the bugs, and the whispering. His chatroom pals mostly didn't believe him, but one asked Dexter if he had told the voices to shut up yet. Dexter hadn't, now that he thought about it, so he did at the top of his lungs. There was a light gasp, as if he had shocked the source of the whispers, then only one whisper before complete silence. It simply said "Well, that was rude."

Dexter grabbed up the scroll and thought he would try the same with the other things written on it. He shouted out "Strength of the Bear" in English, causing nothing more than his neighbors to bang on the wall again, the universal 'shut up' signal. Dexter thought and then shouted it again in Japanese. His body rippled with muscles and he actually felt a little taller too. Another set of angry taps came from below. Dexter punched through the floor and grabbed whatever was used to make the tapping and pulled it up. A broom was clutched in his hand, and with a simple squeeze, Dexter snapped it in two and then dropped the halves back down the hole. With the sound of a fart, his muscles dissipated. Dexter tried the protection spell next and was covered in a dark jade exoskeleton. Dexter grabbed a knife from his kitchenette and broke the blade by stabbing himself in the stomach. Again, his new exterior vanished with the sound of a fart.

Floored by his new abilities, Dexter then decided that he couldn't keep these gifts only for himself. He needed to share it with the world, the only question was how. Well two questions really, how to share his new found power, and how it would affect his work schedule. Superheroing was a natural choice for his situation so Dexter packed up his belongings and put in a work transfer order to Bay City. Chicago was gritty and dirty, but Bay City had heroes, so in his opinion, best place to get proper super hero training to bring home.

Powers & Tactics:
Sucker Punch is a scraper. In your face, quick with a take-down, and ruthlessly efficient. When stealth is required, he is unseen and unheard. Sucker Punch's favorite tactic when dealing with an armed thug is to slap the gun out of his hand, just to add to the perp's fear factor.

Complications:
Weakness: Fear of Insects
Dexter is border line entomophobic (fear of insects) and will stop what he is doing to avoid close proximity with most insects.

Secret Identity
All the best heroes have one.

Motivation :Doing Good
Dexter wants to learn from the best so that he can take his abilities and put them to good use back home in Chicago. He wants to take Chicago from being not so great to oh so great.

Just another applicant, not the one making selections, but I figured I'd offer some feedback on Sucker Punch.

1st off it looks like the build is a 2E build, rather than 3E, and secondly for a PL 11 character you are sorely undercapped on both offense & defense. I get that Variable can be very powerful, but I'd advise ensuring you hit your caps without the Variable, and then purchase extra's, feats, advantages or miscellaneous powers to fill any gaps. That way there is less crunch work mid fight while you configure two different variable pools.

You are also relying upon equipment, which is notoriously unreliable, to up your Toughness & Damage, I'd look at converting those to devices so they aren't taken out of play as easily.

Just my two cents, take it as you will. Otherwise a fun little read, reminds me of Badger, the bat-$h!t crazy martial artist, and the goofball Moviehouse guy from that martial arts flick, Bullet Proof Monk with Chow Yun Fat. Maybe with a smattering of Skitter, heh!

My bad, I thought the thread was using 2e, I can throw it through a 3e filter in no time.

Also I'm not relying on equip for toughness, I'm relying on my saving throws to not get hit lol. Sucker Punch is more of a grab and throw kinda guy more than a beat you to death kinda guy, the knuckles are for emergency use.

To be blunt, I'm starting to get fairly concerned here. The IC thread is in a state where it's awaiting a GM post and has been like that for three weeks. The character submissions haven't received any real commentary despite being up for a week. I have zero information on what's occurring on the GM side here, but I'm not seeing activity. I was interested, but the game seems to be either in limbo or dead.

So, what's happening with this game right now? What's the timeline?

Ok lets see what we got here

Gladius. on the whole looks solid only glitches are his skills I use a house rule for skills so he has some free PP to spend. boost to his parry perhaps or some more skills maybe some powerlifting or the like, maybe come ranks of Close Combat, or ranged combat.

Lithos I like what shes got and given my own past with an Earth Elemental hero I got some nostalgia. No major math errors I can see. her quicksand AE might be a bit of a stretch as the rest of her concept seems more Ben Grimm thing then Sandman. But that's a minor quibble at worst.

Phoenix Flame: always a fan of martial Artists and given who one of the starting PCs was this guys a nice potential fit. Only issues I see are I use languages as a skill with each rank doubling the amount of languages known up to 4pp where one might as well buy the comprehend languages power. Also I tend to limit PL -/+s to a total of 4 so hes slightly over in that regard by 1 beyond that build looks good.

Shaper: Solid all around matter creator which are always tricky. Skills are off due to hosue rule, also languages the same as a skill. lastly i tend to limit Impervious to PL +2 as a max without good reason,

Picture book: she loosk solid reality warpers are also tricky she reminds me of Kasius's Otakuman in a couple of ways, No major changes i can personaly see just to clarify her costumes are a stacking series of effects correct?

Suckerpunch: seems to eb going for a sort of bravestar model you could almost get more mileage out of a series of Alt forms using the totemic Arcghetype. also skills are off due to house rules.

Thats what i got so far. gonan advance vig some more and then see about making a final decision thanks again for the interest everyone :)
