Marcus nods on screen.

"I'll come in tomorrow, a bit after noon. Maybe I can reach him." Marcus shrugs. "Might help." he shrugs.

He considers further... "Okay, maybe after one. I'll let my sleep schedule decide."

"At your convenience," says Emiri, answering your nod with one of her own. "Just tell the front desk who you're there to see, and you'll directed appropriately. Good evening, Marcus." With that, the call ends.

You find yourself very tired, as Nathan said you'd be by now.

Marcus takes a last sip of chamomile and undresses for bed.

"Janet, no calls unless it's from any of the people I sent messages to tonight, Spectrum, any of my neighbors... or any of my clutchmates, otherwise, take a message. Wait, never mind, that's everyone I know. Janet hold all calls until after... 11:00."

INQUISITOR (Victoria Riese)
1 :HP ο COND: Healthy

Victoria goes through the various functions she can figure out or thinks to ask about regarding her apartment and its functions while casually munching on the strange pear-like fruit, eventually popping one of her meds before deciding to call it a night. "Set an alarm so I have enough time to shower and get to my appointment in the morning, please. Um...and... notify if me any of the others that I was woken up with today try to contact me..."

She wasn't entirely sure about the last one, but after the receding shock and feeling more stable after her meds and some alone time, it was setting in that she didn't know anyone. She hadn't really known anyone before either, but this could be a chance to change that, have a new life.

"It's more like, if Public Security can't immediately identify the perpetrator of a crime, they leave the investigation to the victim -- at which point, yes, it's a matter of what the victim can afford. But on the other hand, Public Security is very good at making those identifications. We had some break-ins at the factory that I manage a few months ago, and despite the best efforts of the burglars -- they used disguise and stealth technology I can't even describe -- the Security agents were able to resolve an image from our surveillance footage and immediately apprehend them."
Genevieve thinks that this is all well and good if you run a factory, but if you run a factory affording investigations probably isn't a problem for you in the first place. She doesn't say anything of the sort, though. She just enjoys the rest of her meal, makes polite small talk, and eventually excuses herself, since she has a big day ahead of her tomorrow.

"Unless there are any juicy secrets of the house you'd like to pass on to the new girl, that is," she says with a playful grin. There's obviously something very strange about a house that travels through time, but asking too many questions right away is a good way to attract the wrong kind of attention. She'll have plenty of time to get everyone's secrets out of them, little by little.

Or this is all some kind of bizarre dream. She hasn't given up on that notion--and if it is, none of her questions right now really matter, do they?

BINARY

After a shower she realizes she doesn't really have bedtime clothes, she scavenges the underthings and blouse from one of the . A quick bit of shopping with Amanda later, she buys several pajamas as well as some casual clothes for everyday use, slippers, several pairs of shoes, hosiery, under clothes, etc. Basically anything she would take with her if she were traveling for a week somewhere. She inquires about makeup and jewelry and how common it is but decides to hold off on buying any. She does not remember the doctor wearing any but that might be for medical reasons. As she's waiting for her deliveries, she goes to the kitchen and figures out to get a simple meal made. After eating and changing into her newly arrived pajamas, she starts to feel a bit tired.

The doctor has said this would happen so she gets ready for bed and leaves Amanda on the bedside stand before going to sleep.

"Oh, that's right," says Elisabeth. "Mrs. Butler, Genevieve indicated an interest in the origins of the house's nickname."

"Did she," says Mrs. Butler. "Well, I shall be happy to discuss it, but perhaps at another time." She is watching you very carefully.

Billie likewise finishes their meal and offers their excuses at the same time, accompanying you back to your rooms. "Sleep tight," they say as they head into their own chambers.

Freebird:

Just as you finish your last instructions to Janet, the tablet shows that you've received another text message. Weirdly, it seems to have come from no address, though there's a reply button. It reads just three words. "WHO IS JOHNNY".

All:

Regardless, you all settle down for the evening, and find sleep coming to you easily. Retaining it proves more difficult, as your dreams are troubled with images of your respective pasts, as well as imagery that, should you ever discuss your dreams with each other, you will recognize as common -- specifically, a sequence in which your severed heads are mounted on a wall, each of you protesting that you aren't dead, before a great door closes off and ends the dream. You wake when that happens, in the middle of the night, but soon find yourself asleep once more.

Cutscene:

Dr. Emiri Masuto entered the dimly lit chamber. "They've all arrived at their assigned residences, and are most likely settled down for the night. Everything seems to be going smoothly." She pauses, then asks, "Who is Johnny Appleseed?"

A very precise voice answers her question. "Nickname of an American pioneer, evangelist and nurseryman of the early nineteenth century AD. Mostly remembered for his work planting apple trees by the twentieth or twenty-first centuries. Dismissed."

"Thank you, Madame Director," Emiri replies, bowing, and then departs.

All is silence for a few moments.

Then, quite abruptly, the voice starts singing. "'So come on, let's get goin'/Get those apple trees a-growin'!/ There's a lot of work out there to do!"

A deep breath.

"Therrrre's a lot of work ... to ... do," croons Harriet Wainwright.

Chapter 2: Last Night I Went To Manderley Again

Post by Davies »

So you've decided to visit a haunted house. Describe what prompted this decision. You may have been asked to do so, you may have decided to accompany your friends there, you may have other motives.

A bit of background to possibly help make up your mind -- the house is a rather large ground-level manor on the very edge of Pacifica's territorial claims. The reason that the house is currently open to visitors is that a famous psychic, Sandestin the Munificent, has declared that he will be attempting to exorcise the ghost. According to his publicity, he has had great success in dealing with hauntings and possessions. His press release, repeated by numerous media outlets, has indicated that he welcomes any observers to his process. Just what the people who actually own the house think about all this is unclear.

Peacekeeper

It's been a busy week. Genevieve's formal education has been limited, to put it generously. Free tuition and rent money for the indefinite future is almost too good to be true, but now that she has it, she frankly has no idea what classes she's supposed to take. She got her last job after a short but reasonably successful life of crime, and expecting that to work out for her twice is a bit too optimistic. So with no other truly marketable skills, she's fallen back on the one thing she does know how to do: network.

Cornelia offered to show her around campus, and Genevieve took her up on it without hesitation. She's been using it as an excuse to meet Cornelia's friends, and then their friends, and their friends' friends. No real close relationships, at least not yet, but enough contact to get her name and face out there to a lot of people, and pick up enough shallow, surface level information to start to understand college life. A popular group of students is visiting a haunted house, which is apparently still a thing that exists in the future, and Genevieve is along for the ride. She's been dead for over a thousand years, after all, or at least, she has the memories of someone who has been. She's practically a ghost herself!

She tries to avoid thinking about that very hard.

Freebird

Marcus had put off the employment interview for another week. Besides, he had an interesting side project fall into his lap - the famed psychic, Sandestin the Munificent, was going to perform an exorcism nearby. Marcus was contacted by another local group, the Ghost Chasers, a small internet-based group who went into such places to record their experiences with the paranormal. The group consisted of two brothers - Emil and Diego Delgado, and their mousy brunette AV tech, Darla Tesserin who served as their camera woman and equipment specialist. Her microphone and audiorecording designs were based off of some doodles that Marcus had left in his lab and she'd not only found them remarkable, but finished and built them. She was working on a more sensitive version and was thrilled to learn that the original designer had been 'respawned' (her term). Marcus had always been interested in the supernatural and was happy to help. He didn't turn down the [very nominal] offer of payment (their Cloud Channel wasn't THAT popular after all) but Marcus was glad for the opportunity. He'd worked with Darla on the extra-sensitive EM Field - Audible Wave Conversion System (The M-FAWCS <em-fox> for short). And jumped at the chance when the Ghost Chasers offered to let him join their group for this episode.

Marcus didn't know if they'd made arrangement with the psychic for this to be a joint-venture or if the psychic would be annoyed at their presence/possible-interference. He realized he should have asked such things before arriving at the ancient house and collapsing his Hum-Vee into it's back-sheath. Too late now. He greeted the 'Ghost Chasers' and immediately started setting up the sensitive sound equipment and monitoring the headphones, he own headphones around his neck. Darla seemed greatful at least and Emil and Diego (if not twins they were at least close in age and appearance) were as full of energy as the fearless ghost-hunters always were.

"Feedback filter A-152 seems to be working fine. Good idea on the copper mesh cone to funnel the EM distortion-field, Darla." Marcus praises the seemingly-always-harried tech. "I'll be ready to record when you signal to start." he promises. Marcus realized then that he didn't know what any of these people did in their lives before or even if they had powers. Or maybe the three had been natives - born of either the indigenous populations or of early supers 'respawned' (Okay, he liked the term now).

What Binary Has Found Out About The House:

The building and the land it stands on are both owned by Ultimor Agarabbe, a fantastically wealthy businessman from Mannholm. He inherited them from his wife, Dafine Aitchek, after she was declared dead two years ago, having canceled her resurrection contract and then disappeared two years before that. The general consensus is that she committed suicide in a way that left no corpse, for unknown reasons that have been the source of much speculation in the journals.

Rumors that the house is home to some sort of supernatural phenomenon began almost as soon as Dafine Aitchek went missing, and have only grown more substantial over time, especially after Ultimor Agarabbe married his second wife, Luaru Masenoshi, a Mugei painter of some note, four months ago. Many visitors to the mansion have reported seeing phantoms and hearing odd noises in the night. Ultimor has steadfastly refused to comment on any of this, but his representatives have stated that Sandestin is welcome to visit the house and perform whatever ceremonies he wishes to perform.

The house was built two hundred and fifty years ago by Dafine Aitchek's grandfather, a Martian entrepreneur who was the first individual to attempt to recolonize this area of Earth. Unfortunately, his planned community failed to materialize. Despite its age, the house possesses all the modern conveniences, connected to the city's network but otherwise fully self-sufficient -- and apparently possessed, at one point, defensive weaponry able to withstand a siege, which it did soon after it was constructed.

The week had been rough for Vee. She had a LOT of basic academics to catch up on by virtue of never having gone to school. Fortunately, she was able to have a tutor, Liza, assigned to her as social situations were still too overwhelming for her, but still, a lot of work was a lot of work. It was a good distraction from the shock of all the things that were different in this time to what she was familiar with. And her tutor was understanding.

Vee was being a shut in though. She didn't want to leave her suite, and the only people she saw were Liza and Genevieve and her Liza felt it would be good for Vee to get out. Maybe something fun where there were more people, but more about the experience than the socializing. Just to get her more used to being around people, and maybe socializing a little more.

Vee was reluctant but her curiosity at what exactly a haunted house was won her over, and Liza had said a school friend of hers was inviting Genevieve, so there would be another person from the group Vee woke up with.

All

The current time is around 7:00 PM. The exorcism ceremony is supposed to occur around midnight.

Peacekeeper, Inquisitor:

The ringleader of this expedition, a tall blonde Mugei named Yukika Akahiro, arranged for your transport to the haunted house, in a very long car whose passenger compartment has space left over even after seating Yukika, Cornelia, the two of you, and four other young ladies who appear to be members of the same clique as Yukika. This may be Vee's first trip over the edge, but no one seems to notice if the experience is new to her.

(There's a lot of chatter among the various members of the expedition, and over the course of the journey, you both learn everything in the first two paragraphs of the exposition post, above, but not the third.)

Eventually you arrive at the front gates of the property, which open up so that the car can drive up to the front doors of the house. It's a fairly large building with three floors above ground level, spread out over much more land than the House of Shadows. There are already a few small groups of people waiting outside, and the two of you immediately spot Marcus standing and talking with three people in colorful jumpsuits.

Freebird:

"Then I guess all there is to right now is to wait for the doors to open up," says Emil, glancing at the closed front doors of the mansion. "And that the husband hasn't changed his mind when he saw how many people would be trooping around uninvited."

As he says this, yet another car drives up the house's driveway. Its compartment opens up, and a group of young ladies exit, including both Genevieve and Vee.
"I'm sorry. I love you. I'm not sorry I love you."
