So, silly last-minute question: How much room do we have to add elements to the town/setting as part of our background? Specifically, can I say that a particular family runs the inn (or the largest one, if there is more than one) in Solmir? Or is that something that the GM has already set up, and we shouldn't change?

Description: Rachel is short and slender, with pale skin and long dark hair (typically tied back in a single thick braid). She has the sharp features and cat-pupiled green eyes often associated with elven heritage. Overall, she is pretty enough, with a more exotic look than many of the local girls. She is friendly enough, especially to those who have stories to tell, but generally maintains a quiet and reserved demeanor- some people see it as 'serious and far more mature than her actual age' and some people see it as 'cold and aloof or uncaring' (similar to the stereotypical librarian or schoolteacher).

BACKGROUND:
History: Once upon a time, there was a young girl who lived in a village where nothing ever happened- no matter how much she wanted something to happen. Anything, anything at all, as long as it was as exciting as the tales she had heard from wanderers in the local inn. Her name was Rebecca Tapperly, and this is not HER story.

She was one daughter among many, part of the Tapperly family who ran the largest inn in the quiet village of Solmir. Rebecca spent most of her childhood and her early teenage years listening to every story from every traveler, and dreaming of "getting out"- her family for the most part, simply shook their heads and waited for her to settle down. Nobody ever really left town, after all.

Except Rebecca, who ran away from home at 15 and was never seen in town again. At the time, everyone thought she had stowed away with a caravan headed back to the desert cities, and they knew she would be back as soon as the merchants discovered her. She never came back, and in time her family almost forgot about her- running the inn was a full-time, all-hands sort of business and anything outside of town seemed to just fade out of mind, after all.

Imagine how surprised all of them were, years later, when another caravan of traders from the desert showed up- carrying a tiny baby in a basket and insisting that the child was Rebecca's daughter Rachel, who they had been told to bring to her relatives in Solmir. None of the merchants seemed certain of what had happened to Rebecca. Even her own family had all but forgotten about her, and they took some convincing before they would accept the child- among other issues the girl's eyes were a catlike green, speaking of some measure of elven heritage. Just who had Rebecca married, wherever she had gone?

But young children have a magic all their own, and in time the Tapperly family adopted her- Rebecca's own siblings had children of their own now and ran the inn for the most part. Her parents (little Rachel's grandparents) were still well enough to help, including caring for the new child. Years passed, and the girl became part of the family, as much 'daughter' as 'niece' and more sibling than cousin to those nearer to her own age. She was quiet but very curious, and very very smart. And like her mother, she loved to listen to songs and stories, no matter what she should have been doing instead. As the years passed, she helped around the inn like the other children. She also learned to read and write and to figure sums- from a fairly early age she helped out with lists and book-keeping- when she began to learn other languages she helped her "parents" with foreign travelers who passed through the village (and either stayed at or traded with the inn).

But even that kind of intellectual, detail-oriented work did not quench her curiosity and her love of both stories and mysteries. Whenever a new traveler arrived in town she made time to hear what tales they might tell. When a nearly-retired bard named Flynn settled in town, Rachel managed to become something like an apprentice to the aging entertainer. He taught her how to sing (though she wasn't very good) and how to play the harp (at which she was somewhat better), and he tried to teach her the basics of magic. While the study of wizardry entranced her more than anything she had ever known, Flynn wasn't really able to teach her that much- while he could sense that Rachel had the potential to learn magic, it wasn't the same type of magic that he used. He could teach her some of the basics, and he also managed to teach her a simple 'trick' that would let her read almost anything, in the hope that she might find written clues to help her develop her talents. Slowly, though whatever powers have cloaked the village of Solmir worked their magics over Flynn, and he had less and less time for Rachel.

At the ripe old age of sixteen, Rachel moved into the tiny cottage where her grandparents had been living- the elderly pair instead moved into a spare room at the inn where they could be better tended. While she has not set up a shop exactly, she does all kinds of small tasks to earn her keep- she works with the village healer when they need help, translates documents and acts as a scribe-for-hire, and helps local folk who wish to deal with foreign merchants visiting town. She even helps the Tapperly family run their inn when things get REALLY busy and they need a hand.

Complications:
-Curiouser and curiouser: Rachel doesn't have a cat, and that is probably a good thing. She is very curious by nature, and loves riddles, puzzles, and mysteries of all sorts- she loves SOLVING them most of all. Her curiosity (and her "Let me try" approach to puzzles) could get her into trouble. In a more modern world, she would enjoy Tetris, Rubik's Cube, Jenga, and those iron 'parlor game' puzzles. Magic, of course, is the greatest mystery of all...

-The value of words: Rachel loves stories, with all of their grand exaggerations or even outright lies- but on her own terms, she is keenly aware of the power of words. She is very honest when speaking (sometimes a bit too much so) and always keeps her word- even when that could be a problem. Those who know her know her promises can be counted on.

-The sorrow of the elves: Rachel has some elven blood- not enough to be a half-elf, or likely even one-quarter, but some. If there is a situation where it would be a disadvantage to be an elf, she could be affected- whether that be a spell against elves or simply a person or creature which dislikes them. She does not, as yet, have a corresponding trait where she could draw some advantage from her elven blood.

-The sins of the mother: Some of the old-timers in the village remember her mother, and tend to treat Rachel with less trust or confidence than she would earn on her own- is she going to disappear someday, like Rebecca did, or cause some other trouble for the village?. In addition, no one (including Rachel) knows what actually happened to her mother or father. Are they still alive somewhere out in the world? Perhaps someone arrives bearing a (supposed) message, or wants some help on their behalf...

-Show me the magic: Rachel has some inherent talent for wizardry, but has not been able to develop it very much. The one person who was able to teach her anything, Flynn the bard, thinks that she might have a particular talent for divinations, which would work well with her curiosity. One the one hand, creatures and effects which are sensitive to magic or wizards might be able to sense her more easily or affect her more strongly. On the other hand, she is VERY interested in learning more magic and might risk much to learn.

-The singer, or the song?: (Relationship) Flynn the bard is now fully retired, and he lives in a rustic farmhouse on the outskirts of Solmir with a local widow- a run-of-the-mill local scandal of sorts. He still tells tales of the outside world from time to time, though he remembers it less and less, and even comes into tow to sing at the inn once in a while. Whenever he sees her, he always asks Rachel how her studies are going- especially her work with the harp, but he rarely seems to remember that he was her teacher for some time, or that she wanted to learn about magic. Rachel, in turn, still looks up to the old fellow, and would work hard to impress him or to learn some of his secrets or tricks. In addition, he traveled far and wide before he came to Solmir- perhaps someone or something from his past will finally manage to track him down, for good or ill.

Loved the story! The complications are really interesting and workable into the setting/plot. Good job.

Okay, Rachel Tapperly should be done, pending necessary edits, etc.

She is, sadly, under caps for most of her combat stats.

Her 'Power' is Comprehend 1 (Languages- Read any), distracting, though she also has a tiny helping of elven racial traits.

That-s good, dont worry about caps that much.

I-ll be starting the game sometime today or tomorrow. I think we have a pretty interesting mix of characters, this should be fun ;)

Alright everyone, the IC is up! Feel free to post.
Please include a brief description of how did you meet each other as part of the dream, these would be actual memories of when you first met the other characters, but can be tainted with the impressions you had or the personal appreciations of your characters.

Ah, all of us then eh? I don't mind that at all. :)
Hmm... Seems Mott and Alanari are the only non-humans of the party- well, save for Rachael if you want to count quarter heritage. Half expected some dwarves or a hobbit somewhere.

Jesus frickin Christ.

Thad is already perfect. I love how his vision clearly matches up with each of our characters, yet at the same time is so discordant with reality. It's just brilliant.

And that, my friend, is Thadd in a nutshell. :)

I just hope I can keep it up and not let it fall into too much self-parody.
