How were we supposed to do starting gear? class + background gear or rolling for coin or whichever we most wanted?

Either is acceptable.
I personally leans to the Class gear.
The starting equipment might not be as exciting, but at least you can be sure you'll get all of the gear you need, nothing quite like rolling a series of ones and having nothing but one weapon and the clothes on your back

I went with "both" at first but apparently that isn't allowed around here So I decided to do the standard equipment choice so I wouldn't forget anything.

Yeah, I decided to keep it simple & use the "standard" gear. Plus the fact I didn't have the book to reference helped .
Good news is I picked up (as in bought online) the players handbook yesterday (cause funny enough it was half the price I'd pay at my local game store), & should have it by tomorrow night (depending upon fedex's ability to make deliveries in the weather my part of Ohio is currently dealing with (crap tons of ice & snow, & badly handled so far by the city workers so far).

LOl- "The Tattooed Man"? What kind of ABSOLUTE DILDO would refer to himself as "The Tattooed Man" !?!

Just to clarify, no matter which option you chose (Class items or Roll for money) you still get the items/money from your selected background on top of that.
That's how I'm ruling on that.

I'm waiting for the big reveal when Tyragorn takes off his armor to show they've been two kobolds (one standing on the shoulders of the other) the whole time.

Okay, I've heard back from everybody, guess that means it's on me to start doing some GM posts.
My inclination is to do a narrative post where you're introduced to each other then fast forward to your arrival just outside or Orlane.
From there you'd be able to post up how the trip went for you, and we'd move into the adventure.
The other option is that after the introduction we could allow the players to Role Play their first meeting, getting to know one another before the fast forward.
Curious to hear what the players are interested in.
Either way it's probably going to take a couple days to put things together on my side.

I'm in favor of the 2nd option personally.

I would vote first. Meet in story form, get right to a place where we can start focusing on a problem as a coherent group. We may not be fast friends by the end of the journey to Orlane but we'll all be in it together by that point.

I can go either way. It just depends on how fast we want to get into the game
Re: OOC: Against the Cult of the Reptile God - D&D 5E - Recruiting Closed
I'd say the first, get moving as soon as possible.

Two for skipping ahead to Orlane
One for a short meeting before the trip
One yet to comment.
And one who voted for both of them?

It's more that I don't have a preference. Though thinking about it more what if we each did a quick introduction post after meeting up and then we fast forward to arrival in Orlane? Which I guess is sort of option 1.5?
