Claremont Academy: The Delinquents IC

Post by Horsenhero »

Chapter 1: It's All Academic-

The office of Duncan Summers the Principal of the Claremont Academy is done in an old world private school décor. It was more comfortable than the average public school principal's office by leaps and bounds, but for the group standing behind the woman seated in a plush armchair across the desk from that self-same Mr. Summers it seemed to hold hidden menace.

"We're truly pleased you can accommodate us Mr. Summers..." She said, her voice somehow both smokey and crisp at the same time. She really does sound pleased to, which is a change from earlier this very morning...

Earlier...

"The Claremont Academy has been in our sights for some time now." Vivianne Gable said, gesturing to the holographic image hovering beside her. "Something is rotten there and we need to know what...or more precisely, who. I realize you have not known each other all that long and your training is barely underway, but we lack other suitable agents for this infiltration. I hate to say this, but your lack of discipline is the only thing that makes you believable in the role we've cast you in."

Now...

Summers is looking over her chair at the group of you now. Vivianne caries off her act as a government handler grasping at straws, while trying not to appear as if she's grasping at straws, perfectly. Your mission is dangerous, since your cover is a group of delinquents among the government's teen heroes, yet somehow you've got to avoid attention enough to plumb the corrupt secrets of Claremont.

Earlier...

"It isn't simply the staff you'll have to be wary of, " The briefing went on, even though you'd all heard this before. "the Next Gen are a potential issue as well. You know whatever is happening at the Academy, at least a couple of those young supers are party to it. IF somehow Duncan Summers is involved then it won't be just them either. He has a daughter, Cassie, who is at the school. She seems sweet." The word sweet was given a dark emphasis. Obviously Vivianne didn't trust her.

Now...

"Ms. Gable we'll be more than happy to welcome your former agents into the school. I've never been fond of government programs built around child soldiers."

"Disband the Next Gen then you'll have room to talk Principal Summers." Gable shot back.

Summers hesitated for a moment. Despite the good publicity Next Gen brought the school, it was obvious he had some misgivings as well. It couldn't be because they were minors, could it? After all when Summers had been a hero, he started underage.

"Touche'." Was his only response. No clues there.

Earlier...

"The whole idea of a school dedicated to super-powered youths is a foolish idea. There are records kept. Names, powers, behavioral issues all right there in a computer for anyone to steal. The fact that the school went public after the Terminus invasion is even more suspicious. Omega was brilliant and clever and I wouldn't have put it past him to infiltrate us after he was forced to retreat. What better way than to indoctrinate Terminus foot soldiers right in the public view?"

In keeping with her predeliction for secrecy you knew almost nothing about the government program you were part of. The popular theory was it was somehow a side program of Project Freedom and Gable, with her winning personality was a former volunteer there.

Now...

Now Gable and Summers were shaking hands and she was turning to leave. Stopping she fixes a hard gaze on all of you. "This is your chance to make things right. Don't blow it." Then she was gone.

Summers smiled ruefully after her and shook his head. "Welcome to the Claremont Academy, I hope we'll be able to accomdate you better than Ms. Gable and her program. My name is Duncan Summers and I'm the Principal here. My fondest hope is that we'll be able to put this..." He gestures to the files full of your imaginary misbehaviors, "...behind us and you'll fit into the student body. Like you, every student here is gifted with some type of super-power, so for the first time since you got powers yourselves, you are not an outsider."

"Now, before you begin your orientation to campus, do you have any questions for me?"

Nathan rubbed the back of his head. On the one hand, he understood why they were doing this and agreed. On the other hand, the way Ms. Gable acted out grasping at straws reminded him of the brief. Omega, the world-destroying menace? Why would anyone possibly work for him? Then again, that was probably classic spook paranoia and exaggeration - to make a point.

"Will we have roommates?" From what little he did know, most of the others were without families for one reason or another, like him. It would be more helpful and easier for them to be grouped together, but given their cover the school would probably give them other students to be role models or something.

Duncan Summers-

"All underclassmen share rooms in the dorms. For the sake of making your transitions more comfortable, we've bunked you with one another as much as possible. Your rooms aren't adjacent, but they are fairly close. Despite the rather unfortunate circumstances that brought you here, we want your experience at Claremont to be a positive one."

Noise

Nick stood with his hands tucked into the front pockets of his hoodie. He'd lowered his hood when they'd entered the office, after a warning look from Ms. Gable. Nick had stared back defiantly but he'd wordlessly complied eventually. She was the boss and she'd done alright by him so far.

Not that he trusted her or what she was saying about this school. Or the Principal here. As far as Nick was concerned they all lived in nice, comfortable glass houses with plenty of rocks to throw. Him and the others were the living proof of that.

Not outsiders? That was a good one, tucked at some strings in Nick he didn't want to admit to. Not that it was his powers that had othered him, quite the opposite they'd been his primary means of survival. He was curious what they'd be able to teach him in that regard.

"Do we have a curfew? What about any rules about power use? Don't wanna screw this up day one because I didn't know the boundaries. Sir." And easier to bend the rules when you know where the line goes. He'd get to the bottom of his place, find out whether they were just another powerdrunk tyrant or as genuine as they liked to claim.

Duncan Summers-

Principal Summers allowed a slight smile to pull at his lips when he answered Nick. "No Mr. Holt, there is no set curfew for our students. Given the activities of some of the student body, like the members of Next Gen, it would be somewhat hypocritical of us to permit them to do what they do and forbid others. That being said, we are a school and are subject to all graduation requirements set forth by the state...as well as our unique programs...so students are responsible for their academic performance."

COCHISE

Jax stands toward the back leaned against the wall with his arms crossed in front of him taking it all in. "Do you have a map ap that I can download onto my phone to help me find my way around here? He asks. Jax was attired in a black t-shirt , blue jeans, black Hi- Tek boots, and a red bandana to keep his hair out of his face. The 4 string bone necklace, he wore as a reminder of his Apache heritage. "Who's rooming with whom?"

Chris shrugged. "I think I know the answers I need." He wore faded, ripped jeans and a thin hoodie. He closed his eyes for a second. "Pretty sure I end up with Nick."

Nick nodded along to the reply he got. Looks like they were being cut enough slack to hang themselves with. He could work with that. "Alright, understood."

He shot a look at Chris. The precog could be annoying, when he wasn't being too useful to be annoyed at. "Looks like we're all set here then."

Chris ignored the look from Nick. "Yeah, so can we go have a look around? Maybe meet some of the locals?"

Duncan Summers-

Duncan looked at Jax and lifted his hand horizontally, fingers spread and made a waggling motion. "Sort of. There's a downloadable map, but it doesn't include some of the more...sensitive areas of the school."

When Nick spoke up, Summers simply nodded. The precog would definitely take some getting used to. It wasn't long until the conversation escalated to the quartet wanting to explore the grounds unescorted. Given the dossiers he'd received that was not necessarily a good idea.

"Well, I don't think I can just turn you lose straight away. I'm sorry but there are too many personalities on campus who are too ready to get all alpha superfor me to risk a confrontation. I also realize that having me around won't do your respective reputations any good, so I propose a compromise. My daughter, Cassie is your age and is well acquainted with the campus. How about I ask her to play escort for the moment?"

"That's fine, thanks." Nathan said, trying to play the role of the nice guy for the group.

He hadn't been holding his breath for unmonitored access, whether or not they were supposed to be living here starting today. The old man's daughter playing tour guide was something he hadn't expected. Ms. Gable hadn't seemed very fond of her, which could mean a lot of things, to be honest.

Someone they're age would present a more relaxed tour, but Nick was certain she'd report everything to her dad afterwards. Fine, he had expected to be watched carefully either way and getting to the bottom of the people here was part of their mission. "Sure, sounds good."

Chris shrugged. "I was hoping I was wrong about this one but OK." His smirk suggested he was not, in fact displeased about being right.

"Yeah, I kind of already assumed it would be a sanitized version, but that's cool with me." He replied to Duncan. "Well, let's get this show on the road."

Soon...
In response to Principal Summers summons, Cassie Dugan slouches into the office. She's a cute young girl, somewhere in her mid-teens, but her body language indicates she's not really happy and her face is perfectly composed in pure boredom.

"Yeeess Mr. Summers, what can I do for you?" Her blue eyes settle on the four newcomers and she visibly stifles a sigh.

"Mr. Summers? Is that any way to greet your father?"

"Godfather. You and my mom are close...but you ain't that close. Anyway, I can guess what this is about." Turning to the four she looks them over and manages a smile. "Hi. Welcome to Claremont Academy. My name is Cassie Dugan and I'll be your cruise director today."

She gestures toward the door. "Shall we?"
