Loving the Rifts builds. Any plans on doing conversions of the named characters like Julian the First or Reid's Rangers? I know the cyberknight book has Lord Coake, and seem to recall a link between him and the godling guy from Phase world (who's name escapes me now) and Ignax (?) the Mad (the dwarf godling).

Speaking of Coake, wasn't there stats or something for his band in the PFRPG somewhere. (believe it or not, I once had this stuff memorized.)

Glad you're digging them!

I MIGHT do builds for some of the major names, but doing so is a lot more work, because I have to come up with more numerical comparisons between skills in Palladium stuff and skills in Green Ronin's. Plus everyone always ends up with the same gear anyhow :).

-The Ninja 'Borg is said to be the elite of the elite for ninjas- as durable as a soldier in Power Armor. And OH MY GOD is this thing balls to the wall- given the MDC of a SAMAS Power Armor, options for built-in weaponry that would impress COALITION Giant Robots, an internalized Fire-Breath Weapon, four friggin' arms, a TAIL, and more- it's absolutely bonkers. Totally the power-geekiest thing in the "Technological Japan" side of things. The art is some of Vince Martin's Riftsiest, featuring a cybernetic eye, all black limbs in organic-looking armor (that nonetheless avoids his predilection for excessive spikes and rounded padding), and a long, serpentine tail (... okay, that one ends in spikes). This guy looks too manly for Mortal Kombat!

-Ninja 'Borgs are said to be recruited from physically disabled or inept Ninja Clan members, thus allowing them to contribute. Their mental strength is tested before they gain any of the inhuman cybernetic attachments as well. At PL 11, these things can take on almost anything in the Main Rulebook at win, with combined MDC matching some Dragon Hatchlings.

-Police Officers are basically Soldiers, minus some ass-kick, but plus a bunch of Tech & Investigative Skills. The book mentions how difficult their job is- less freedom to use lethal force, but they still have to fight rioters, Ninjas, Cyberoids and supernatural monsters! Many are said to be reluctant to investigate crimes committed by the major corporations that run the Republic of Japan, while 15% are said to be "on the take"!

Not quite :). It’s just that it was Batgirl and I on the project, and with her out of it for however long, I didn’t see as much need to post these.

Total: Abilities: 46 / Skills: 46--23 / Advantages: 9 / Powers: 10 / Defenses: 6 (94)

-The New Republic's version of "City Rats", Cyberoids make up the very "Cyberpunky" atmosphere of this part of Japan, especially thanks to Kevin Siembieda's own art, while gives them a strictly-1985 version of what "punks" look like- Ultimate Warrior facepaint and black leather jackets. However, they are highly tech-savvy, as is the stereotype of Japan as a whole, and said to spend 8-12 hours a day "on-line" (you can tell this is the mid '90s because there's a dash there) with other Cyberoids. These are gang members who fight against "the man" or other gangs.

-There's a bit on their origins, and how they can get roped into these gangs- either via standard criminal methods, or with the Yakuza and others blackmailing them or lending them too much money, which must then be repaid by joining their organization.

-They're functionally similar to the Main Rulebook's City Rats, but with more Tech Skills. I just went and raised the Intelligence, too.

"Built-In Language Translator" Comprehend 2 (Languages) [4]
"Handjack & Headjack" Communication 2 (Radio, Technology) [16]
"Gas Filter" Immunity 2 (Suffocation, Drowning) [2]

Offense:
Unarmed +8 (+7 Damage, DC 22)
Initiative +2

Defenses:
Dodge +8 (DC 18), Parry +8 (DC 18), Toughness +12 (+6 Impervious), Fortitude --, Will +7

Complications:
Responsibility (The Republic of Japan)
Enemy (Oni, etc.)- Japan is besieged by otherdimensional adversaries.
Power Loss (Extra Stuff)- Borgs diminish their Psychic potential greatly, and cannot cast Magic, nor use Techno-Wizard items.
Responsibility (Kinda Nuts)- Dragon 'Borgs are so inhuman that the human brains placed within them can go insane due to unfamiliar sensations and reactions. Many develop a tremendous fear, or hatred, of actual Dragons.

Total: Abilities: 40 / Skills: 28--14 / Advantages: 9 / Powers: 93 / Defenses: 11 (167)

-There's insane Rifts stuff, and then there's THIS- some of the most hilarious, bizarre, over-the-top stuff in any of the books. While "Guy With Cybernetic Parts" is a standard trope in the RPG, guys having their brains put into ROBOTIC DRAGON bodies is completely nuts. And there are FRIGGIN' FOUR OF THEM!!!! Who in the world would possibly need more than TWO? It's just... so RIFTS!!

-Seriously, you could have gotten away with two versions of this. But NO- Vince Martin, God that he is, drew FOUR of these damn things, and so of course the game can't just use two pictures for the same guy; it's gotta be FOUR. Four completely-redundant Robo-Dragons with near-identical capabilities, just that they have escalating MDC, meaning that one is unquestionably better than all of the others. Nothing says Rifts like "We had to make all of this to fit the art that Martin sent in, so by God we're gonna repeat the same stat-blocks four goddamn times to justify the art!". They spend like eight pages on this!

-Though, in a nice moment, they actually go a bit into the point that THIS WOULD DRIVE PEOPLE INSANE. Suddenly turning bipedal human beings into giant robotic Dragons would completely mess people up, and so Dragon 'Borgs have to repeatedly check on Palladium's beloved Insanity Tables once per year, frequently developing a fear or hatred of actual Dragons.

Image

WING BLADE 'BORG- PL 10 (216):
Powers: "Tail & Extra Arms" Extra Limbs 3, FIGHTING +2, "Particle Beam Gun" Blast 13 (Ranged 2, Penetrating 8), AE: "Vibro-Tail & Other Spikes" Strength-Damage +2 (Reach, Penetrating 7, Multiattack 9) [44]
Other Stuff: "Jetpack" Flight 6, Stealth +4 (+6) [5]
-These Dragon 'Borgs function as spies, because they have long necks and weigh a mere 1000 pounds. This art is probably the "Martin"-iest, as it's full of organic-looking padding, spikes, thin limbs and smooth edges.

TSUNAMI 'BORG- PL 11 (232):
Powers: FIGHTING +1, "Particle Beam Gun, Laser Eyes & Mini-Guns" Blast 13 (Ranged 2, Penetrating 8, Multiattack), AE: "Mini-Missiles" Blast 10 (Area- Burst), AE: "Vibro-Axe" Strength-Damage +4 (Reach, Penetrating 9), "Built-In Jetpack" Flight 6 [65]
-A combat model designed for killing Oni and other supernatural threats, the Tsunami is on many police forces. They have a TON of guns & gear compared to the Wing Blade 'Borg. These guys have a small chance of going crazy, but are REALLY beloved by the people of Japan- a popular anime called Demon-Hunter Tsunami has detailed a fictional hero, making these guys very respected and admired- there's even a random-rolled (of course) way to determine the money you'd get if they made an anime based off of YOUR Tsunami 'Borg's exploits!

"IMPERIAL COMBAT" 'BORG- PL 12 (230):
Powers: ST +1, Protection +1, FIGHTING +1, "Triple-Barrelled Particle Beam Gun, Head Lasers & Double Laser Turrets" Blast 15 (Ranged 2, Penetrating 8, Multiattack), AE: "Mini-Missiles" Blast 11 (Area- Burst), AE: "Smoke Dispenser" Concealment 2 (Visuals, Cloud Area), AE: "Vibro-Claws & Tail" Strength-Damage +3 (Reach, Penetrating 7, Multiattack 9) [63]
-The Imperial Dragon (given numerous names) is incredibly inhuman, looking more like a serpentine Asian Dragon than the oddly Western designs of the previous two. This leads them to have a greater chance towards insanity (though only 5% the first year), but they make up for it with much greater combat capability. Like, INSANELY huge- this thing has three different kinds of guns, and they all do disgusting amounts of damage- greater than the SAMAS. This bastard is PL 12!

"FLAME CLOUD" ATTACK 'BORG- PL 11 (240):
Powers: Protection +1, FIGHTING +1, Move-By Action, Flight 8, "Laser Guns & Particle Beam Cannon on Tail" Blast 14 (Ranged 2, Penetrating 8, Multiattack), AE: "Flame Breath Plasma System" Damage 11 (Area- Cone), AE: "Vibro-Tail & Other Spikes" Strength-Damage +2 (Reach, Penetrating 7, Multiattack 9) [73]
-Very similar to the Imperial Dragon 'Borg, this one's just a more slender, more serpentine version with more Martin signifiers, like a stark reflective-black & white color scheme and some gigantic, absurdly-oversized "shoulder missile launchers" that completely overpower the skinny Cyborg's design and make it look ridiculously off-balance. It's designed to "strafe" enemies on the ground via fly-by attacks. This is the most expensive one in M&M terms, owing to its built-in Sonic-Speed Flight.

Japanese Robot Suits

Post by Jabroniville »

JAPANESE ROBOT SUITS:
* Some quick stats for the powerful robot suits and armors in the Rifts Japan book.

Image

ATPA-85 Power-Spy- +9-10 Toughness, ST 5, Leaping 1, Speed 1, Blast 11 Gun & +9 Vibro-Blades Attached

H-Brand "Ninjabot"- +10-11 Toughness, ST 6, Speed 3, Blast 11 Gun & +9 Vibro-Blades Attached, Missile Launchers
-One of Breaux's worst-looking suits, it takes all of the stealth of a ninja and reverses it, making it a clunky-looking, boxy, inorganic suit with a dopey Chest-Hole for a gun.

Image

IPA-40 Dai-Katana Bugei- +12 Toughness, ST 7, Speed 6, Flight 7, +11 Vibro-Katanas, Blast 13 Rail Gun, Blast 11 Lasers & Missiles
-The standard of the Ichto armed forces, it's SAMAS-tough and has good weaponry. Another sub-par Breaux design, unfortunately. How is "Robot Samurai" NOT Vince Martin's to draw?

IPA-45 Ikusa "Warrior"- +12 Toughness, ST 8, Speed 3, Leaping 1, Missiles, Blast 13 Rail Gun, +10-12 Vibro-Katana
-Ugh, even worse art than the last one. Has one of those "goofy angry-face samurai masks" that really just look dumb to me. This suit's meant for the elites and those descended from Samurai.

Image

IPA-50 "Grenadier"- +15 Toughness, ST 8, Speed 3, Missiles, Blast 12 Grenade Launcher, Blast 10 Lasers
-Oh my God, this one is AWFUL. Breaux drew it like it's literally made out of misshapen boxes with battleship guns glued to the shoulder-pads. It's a "Giant Killer" designed for anti-armor combat against Dragons and other huge things.

Image

IPA-60 Tazu-Tengu Power Armor- +11 Toughness, ST 5, Flight 7, Speed 5, Blast 10-11 Grenades
-Oh thank god, finally some Martin art. The Tengu armors are his typical sort, being very slender, with round-feathered wings set too far apart to be anything but ornamental. It's the only Power Armor legal for civilians to own.

Image

IPA-62 Super-Tengu- +12 Toughness, ST 7, Flight 7, Speed 5, Blast 10-11 Grenades, Missiles, Blast 13 Lasers
-A better, stronger version of the above. Likely drawn because Martin drew two different designs.

IPA-70 Mizu Mi- +12 Toughness, ST 9, Swimming 6, Missiles, Blast 10 Gun, Blast 13 Plasma Cutter, +10 Vibro-Cutter
-An undersea suit.

ROBOTS:
AT-1053 Ka-Kuma "Metal Bear"- +15 Toughness, ST 10, Speed 3, Blast 15 Rail Cannons, Missiles, Blast 13 Rail Gun, Blast 12 Lasers, 30 feet tall, 4 Riders

AT-1063 Hi-Tora "Fire Tiger"- +14 Toughness, ST 9, Speed 4, Leaping 2, Blast 13 Head Blasters, Missiles, Blast 12 Flamethrower, Chemical Sprays (Acid 10, Stench & Tear Gas, Fire Retardant, Water/Holy Water), 22 feet tall, 3 Riders

IR-2015 Kani "Crab Walker"- +11 Toughness, ST 7, Speed 4, Swimming 5, Missiles, Blast 14 Torpedos, Blast 12 Lasers, 3 Riders, 9 feet tall

IR-2020 Wrecker- +14 Toughness, ST 10, Speed 4, +12 Buzz-Saws, Blast 12 Plasma Cutter, 2 Riders, 24 feet tall
-A mining/demolition robot

IR-2040 Destroyer- +13 Toughness, ST 10, Speed 4, Flight 6, Missiles, Blast 13 Lasers, Blast 12 Rail Gun, 16 feet tall, 1 Rider

IR-2050 Apocalypse- +15 Toughness, ST 10, Speed 4, Missile Launchers, Blast 13 Rail Gun, Blast 13 Belly Gun, +13 Vibro-Weapons, 4 Riders, 30 feet tall
-A new Monster Hunter type of machine, this one has Kevin Siembieda art, so it looks a bit goofy.

IR-2060 Banshee- +13 Toughness, ST 8, Speed 5, Flight 7, Missiles, Blast 14 Sonic Cannon, Blast 12 Lasers, +13 Vibro-Swords, 2 Riders, 18 feet tall
-More Martin art, thankfully. This one looks like a rejected Coalition design, sporting a skull-mask and being REALLY bulky, with huge shoulder pads and guns all over it. The Sonic Cannon in particular looks terrific, with plenty of holes for vents or whatever the hell all that is. This thing is designed to reclaim The Zone from Oni.

Image

IR-2070 Gemini- +14 Toughness, ST 8, Speed 5, Missiles, Blast 14 Rail Gun, +12 Vibro-Sword, Concealment (Vision, Limited Level), 21 feet tall, 2 Riders
-Ugh- possibly Breaux's worst drawing. It's just so... PLAIN. Utterly-uninteresting look, cylinders for arms and legs, giant spheres for shoulder and knee pads, and a Conquistator-type helmet for whatever reason.

Image

IR-4000 Tatsu "Dragon"- +17 Toughness, ST 10, Blast 12 Plasma Mouth Weapon, Missiles, Blast 13 Plasma Cannon, +10 Bite, Blast 13 Tail Laser, Extra Limb (Tail), 20 feet tall, 3 Riders
-JESUS CHRIST! A monstrous, 20-foot-tall, ROBOT DRAGON that you can pilot against giant monsters! One of Martin's busiest drawings, it features the organically-scaled (of course) Tatsu fighting a dragon so scaled that it's hard to tell which one is the robot at first. Huge shoulder guns, with spikes lining most important areas.

Fatal & Friends adds:
You know, I joke about Siembieda taking any possible exhaust port or circular protrusion and making it into a weapon (and if he wants to add a weapon that isn't in the art, he just calls it concealed), but Kevin. Kevin. We have to talk, pal. You need to cut it out, because this is just silly. The moment a GM describes a dragon firing snot missiles the table is going to lose it. And, yes, I'm sure some poster is readying their post about how this is unironically awesome, but I don't think just being farcical is your intent here, Kevin. It can bite and claw and horn, has palm lasers (not in the art), tail lasers (not in the art), long-range shoulder mini-missiles (not in the art), and a prehensile tail (... which I guess is in the art). The missiles are the only thing with any punch - this thing has a lot of armor but not many ways to dish out damage otherwise. It probably can't compete with actual dragons, not because dragons can deal out a lot of damage, but just because they generally will have three times the damage capacity this thing has.
Image

Original armor design, yes?

BODY ARMOR:
Street Armor- +8 Toughness
Trooper Body Armor- +9 Toughness
Heavy Combat Marine- +10 Toughness, Thermo-Sights, Undersea Modifications
Infiltrator Body Armor- +8 Toughness, Wall-Crawling on Metals (meant for spies & ninja)
Hiker Body Armor- +8 Toughness (meant for farmers and travellers, it looks like Samurai War Gear, but with no mask)
Sumo Body Armor- +10 Toughness, +2 Strength (... it's fat. Actually not a bad Martin design, except for the huge belly- lots of bright, white spots make it stand out)
Frontiersman Body Armor- +8 Toughness
HA-20 Juicer Environmental Armor- +8 Toughness, Targetting Sights (the "Samurai" headgear looks like Vince Martin just traced Marvel's first Death's Head)

Re: Jab's Rifts Builds (Ninja Crazy! Ninja Juicer! Dragon 'Borgs!)

Post by Jabroniville »

Hey look! This thread is back! Kind of!

See, I started this last May (wow, ten months ago) because we'd all gotten on a Rifts kick on here, and I was having a blast poring over the books and riffing on the goofy crap in them. BatgirlIII was way into statting things, too, and we had a handful of comments here and there. But then BGIII ghosted again, and it kind of killed my desire to keep posting. I mean, this isn't exactly as busy as my other thread, either, with a lot of "nothing" classes added on. And then my computer screwed up in August, halting much of my building... and then my HARD DRIVE died in September (though thankfully I had all my text files backed up). All in all, I stopped doing stuff last summer.

But this thread got ENOUGH comments (and hey- Slade & Sidious! I don't see you guys as often in my regular thread! Hopefully this lures you back, lol), I figured I can post what I'd built but not posted, at least. I mean, I had a couple weeks of content yet to post- I just was waiting for BGIII again or something.

So there's actually three more Rifts Japan builds to post, then a lil' bit of Rifts South America.
