If the Doctor points and laughs at archaeologists, because he's a time-traveler, I wonder what he does to paleontologists.

DIMETRODON
Pronounciation:
DAI-meet-roe-don ("two-measured teeth")
Role: Ancient Mammal-Like Reptile
PL 5 (34)- Minion Rank 3, Sidekick Rank 7
Normal Version:
PL 3-4
STRENGTH 2 STAMINA 4 AGILITY 0
FIGHTING 5 DEXTERITY 0
INTELLIGENCE -4 AWARENESS 0 PRESENCE -3

Skills:
Expertise (Survival) 5 (+5)
Intimidation 8 (+5 Size)
Perception 3 (+3)

Advantages:
Fast Grab, Improved Critical, Improved Hold, Power Attack

Powers:
"Animal Senses" Senses 2 (Low-Light Vision, Acute Scent) [2]
"Synapsid  Bite" Strength-Damage +2 [2]
Features 1: Back Sail (Allows for one-hour head start on other creatures, a more impressive visage to show off to other animals, and greater Cold resistance) [1]

Offense:
Unarmed +5 (+4 Damage, DC 19)
Initiative +0

Defenses:
Dodge +3 (DC 13), Parry +5 (DC 15), Toughness +4, Fortitude +5, Will +3

Complications:
Disabled (Animal)- Dimetrodons cannot speak to humans, nor use their limbs to easily manipulate objects.
Weakness (Cold Climates)- The Permian Era was a much hotter time period than our own. Creatures from that era will be more susceptible to Cold and Ice-based attacks.

Total: Abilities: 8 / Skills: 16--8 / Advantages: 4 / Powers: 5 / Defenses: 9 (34)

Era: Permian
Range: North America & Europe
Size: Up to 11 feet long
Encounter Groups: Unknown
Tactics: Chasing down sluggish early-morning prey and hauling it down with canine-toothed bite
Same Stats As: None

-Related to Gorgonops, and similarly NOT a Dinosaur is the very much more famous Dimetrodon, known for the large sail on it's back. Thought to be a method of absorbing solar heat early in the morning with great efficiency, this would have allowed Dimetrodon a head start over other reptiles of the day, who were much slower with pure cold-blooded bodies. The iconic appearance has allowed Dimetrodon a fair bit of fame as a background creature, though it's not as popular as the REALLY famous extinct reptiles. It's a fair bit weaker than Gorgonops or other dinos, as it's pretty short and stumpy (it's about the size of a human- the sail 'n' tail combo adds some artificial size), about as big as a Komodo Dragon. Which of course is still pretty big. In a more silly fantasy-based campaign, you could make their sails some form of Air Controlling knock-down weapon. But in real life, they were as rigid as stone.

-Dimetrodons and it's ilk are quite interesting, as they're more closely related to mammals than modern reptiles- they feature teeth of different shapes and sizes (a mammalian trait), and a few other characteristics, making them quite integral to the story of life. Note that they're considerably more ancient than Dinosaurs by a few million years (they're farther from T-Rex and Triceratops than THEY are from US), but they will still likely appear in the background of nearly any Dino-based medium. Hell, Dino-Riders (itself a completely anachronistic series) featured a dozen of the guys, complete with humans armed with lasers hidden behind the iconic sail (using it as stealth and as a shield). Note that this is impossible, but still kewl and you should totally try it.

-Dimetrodon is PL 5, being akin to many smaller Animal species that are still dangerous predators. It's bite is mean, and it's sail has a few minor attributes, qualifying it as a Feature in my mind, but it's just not big enough to match the heavyweights of the Pre-Historic world.

-Gorgonops is a very little-known therapsid reptile, but it was one of the top predators of it's day- the first species anywhere to ever grow extra-long canines ("Sabre Teeth"). It's the size of a really sleek rhino, and actually had pretty long legs for it's size, giving it an odd, somewhat ungaingly appearance, though it would have been quite fast in real life. Though reptilian, it's actually more closely related to mammals than any known dinosaur- it can chew (a new adaptation), and had legs tucked underneath the body instead of at the sides. A good, PL 6.5-ish carnivore, like a bigger, slower Lion.

Not a good idea. Last time I patted a child's head and told them their bones looked neat, the reaction from the kid's mother was...less than optimal for my continued well-being.

Tactics: Headbutting using thick skull-plate
Same Stats As: Dracorex hogwartsia (Harry Potter-inspired name), Stygimoloch

-Stegoceras is a mini-version of it's much more famous relative, Pachycephalosaurus. Oddly, many people believe that THIS is the natural size of the creature, being a six-foot omnivore that doesn't really 'fit in' with a lot of other Dino-species (most are either duck-bills, theropods, or four-legged guys- these guys are kind of related to Ceratopsians), but the famous one is FAR larger. Not that this guy is a pushover- paleontologists lamely believe that the creatures 'flank-butted' each other with their heads, as opposed to using them as death weapons for headbutting rivals and predators, but I've decided to stat them up using their heads as heavy weapons. So this is a PL 4, man-sized critter with a nasty melee weapon. The "real life" version would likely have less ranks of Damage.

-Effectively replacing Stegoceras as the "most well-known" of the small Pachycephalosaurs, this recently-described creature was famously named for the Harry Potter franchise's stuff. There exists controversial evidence that this creature, and the similar Stygimoloch, may simply be younger specimens of the famous Pachycephalosaurus.

Unfortunately, all such questions will only be answered when we actually find an amberized mosquito with blood from a dinosaur. Or invent a time machine, which is disturbingly more plausible.

-As I mentioned, these things didn't REALLY use their heads for headbutting- the sheer force of their blows would likely be fatal to both creatures, and their necks weren't built for it the way Bighorn Sheep's were... but screw it, this way is much cooler. Pachycephalosaurus is a mouthful to say, but it's still a fairly iconic dinosaur, usually coming in after the usual theropods & ceratopsians, but still a background object. They can look a little odd, but some of those head crests are MIGHTY impressive. This one is a PL 7 creature, able to dish out some incredible damage on the charge (equal to a Lion's Claw Swipe), but lacks a bit of accuracy compared to more elite Dinosaur fighters, and is really easy to hit, even for something that's a sixteen-foot, 990-lb. monster.

-Now on to the Pterosaurs. Notably, these creatures are NOT Dinosaurs (just like Dimetrodons & Crocociles aren't), but a closely-related reptilian species that lived in the same era. Similarly, "Pterodactyl" is an incorrect name, and used by a lot of dumb people (including YOU, Pink Ranger Kimberly! But I forgive you because you are hot) to refer to Pterosaurs as a whole. Heck, even Dino Riders got into the act, letting Llahd (their Token Kid Character) USE ONE AS A HANGLIDER, despite the real "Pterodactylus" weighing about as much as a tiny kitten. It is a VERY little creature, not capable of doing much damage, but it's size makes it very hard to hit.

So a pterodactylus would actually be a pretty good pet/companion for a lost world type, somewhat like a parrot on the shoulder of a pirate, or a falconer's bird.

Necromancers that are "good" is a favorite concept of mine. In myth and legend, it used to be fairly common to think of magically utilizing the dead as a good thing. I mean, think about it - free labor! Armies that don't have families worried about them back home! Benevolent necromancy would be FANTASTIC.

Evil healers are a bit more of a stretch, because there's no "traditional" body of lore you can draw from, but then you realize that there are a whole lot of unsavory things they could be keeping you alive for... and maybe their healing isn't great for the long-term soundness of your mind and/or body... What if they set you up in such a way that you need their continued care to stay alive? Then what? And then there's the fact that knowledge of medicine and anatomy lends itself fairly directly to knowledge of poison and torture...

See, that's why my Castellia campaign world as a Good Necromancer as part of the backstory for my Obsidiaris character, with the "free labor" concept in mind. And my "Jabverse" superhero-verse has a world (Ice Princess' place of birth) featuring a kingdom for each of the "Eight Schools of Magic"- one of the "good" kingdoms being Undead-related (as an unkillable, impersonal army; though the people are considered rather grim), and one of the "evil" ones themed around White/Healing Magic (because, well, they heal THEMSELVES, but what about anyone else? They get wealthy off of overcharging for their services, and cruelly turn down anyone they see as beneath them).

-Rhamphorhynchus here is an "h"-heavily-named smaller species (which is nonetheless the size of an albatross), and suitable for those smaller breeds. It's just barely small enough for Shrinking, but is nonetheless lightly-built enough to have negative physical stats, rendering it a minor-league PL 1 creature compared to it's brethren. It's an ugly beast, but VERY well-studied, being deposited in countless, wonderfully-detailed fossils, allowing scientists a huge scope of knowledge for all pterosaurs as a reasult. They were likely covered in fine hairs and had tons of needle-like teeth that pointed forwards to allow them to grip fish properly. In a campaign, they're merely background-fodder, presenting no challenge for anybody, but it's nice to just have them around, lest people think you're just whipping out a superstar cavalcade of only the well-known breeds.

-Curiously, even THEY showed up in Dino Riders, being bomb-carrying add-ons to the massive "Brontosaurus" figure. Which is a great idea, honestly- not all extinct creatures made good mounts, but they could still be useful.

I have a DnD character that just so happens to be a good Necromantic Wizard. How did i get around those pesky Paladins and Clerics you ask? One word,my inquiring friends: Mortician.....
