For those desperate to know, the NEW Builds of this Disney set so far have been:

My Beloved Nancy Tremaine
Powerline (I'm a bit stunned I never thought to build him last time)
Bradley Uppercrust III
Tod & Copper
The Nightmare Before Christmas cast (Jack, Sally & Oogie Boogie)
Tangled: The Series (Cassandra, Lance, Frederic, Ariana, Varian)
Tangled side characters (The Pub Thugs, The Stabbington Bros.)
Circe (Hercules)
King Triton

I was pretty thorough last time with the characters that deserved to be statted, really.

And for those just DESPERATE for an update, here's my ludicrously-detailed list of builds I've posted that have yet to make their way over to Echoes. It once looked pretty sparse up top, but I decided to dig through my older ATT-era builds and figure out exactly which months I posted things, to make it look a bit more accurate. So now my JLU, JLA, JSA, Teen Titans, Mortal Kombat & even Mario builds are now updated to include the month every build was posted. I'm not insane. Shut up- I'm not.

It's a pity mothers almost always die in Disney Movies, because HOLY CRAP do they make some beautiful ones.

QUEEN ARIANNA
Played by:
Julie Bowen
Role: Stick In The Mud, MILF
PL 1 (30)
STRENGTH
-1 STAMINA 0 AGILITY 0
FIGHTING 0 DEXTERITY 0
INTELLIGENCE 2 AWARENESS 4 PRESENCE 3

Skills:
Athletics 4 (+3)
Expertise (Royalty) 4 (+6)
Insight 2 (+6)
Persuasion 4 (+7)

Advantages:
Benefit 2 (Queen of Corona)

Offense:
Unarmed +0 (-1 Damage, DC 14)
Initiative +0

Defenses:
Dodge +2 (DC 12), Parry +1 (DC 11), Toughness +0, Fortitude +1, Will +5

Complications:
Responsibility (The Queen of Corona)
Relationship (King Frederic)
Rivalry (Wilhelmina)- “Willow” was a wild and adventurous sister to Arianna, frequently daring her sister (“DARE-ianna”) to take crazy risks. This needles Arianna tremendously, causing the occasional blow-out- she sees Willow as irresponsible, flighty and undependable.
Relationship (Rapunzel)- Arianna missed out on eighteen years of her little girl’s life, and appreciates every moment, while understanding that her daughter needs to be free.

Total: Abilities: 16 / Skills: 14--7 / Advantages: 2 / Powers: 0 / Defenses: 5 (30)

-Like Frederic, Arianna was a non-speaking character in Tangled, and so needed to develop a personality. In the series, she became a mature, adoring parent, dutiful to her people and respectful to her husband. She is less intense and moody than her husband, though is a trifle more ordinary- it’s a big plot point that her sister is the irresponsible one. Arianna is thus MUCH more boring and mature by contrast- this also sees her playing a minor role over much of the series, with only a single episode of focus (where her big day with Rapunzel is ruined by the intrusion of her sister). Also, she’s WAY HOT, YO- looking almost exactly like Rapunzel, but with greater height and darker hair.

-The character isn't very popular in fan-art, really. It's a bit funny to look through the first 20 or so pics on DeviantArt in terms of popularity and find one of MINE in it, lol. Not a good sign of a character's popularity! I don't even COLOR stuff!

About the Performer: Julie Bowen’s appeared in a lot of stuff I haven’t seen, but at least have heard of. She was in Happy Gilmore, apparently, and has received six Emmy nominations in a row for Modern Family, winning twice.

Re: Jab’s Builds (Rapunzel! Flynn! Mother Gothel! Cassandra!)

Post by Ares »

Regarding Tangled, I've only seen it once or twice with my nieces, and while it was cute, it didn't wow me the way other Disney films have. It's not bad, but it seems kind of . . . well . . . Dreamworks-y. Still, Rapunzel herself is adorable and sweet, and makes an interesting contrast to Tiana. Tiana's biggest flaw basically is that she works too hard, and is otherwise overshadowed by everyone else in the film because they're more nuanced and interesting (something Jab similarly complained about regarding Hercules). Rapunzel meanwhile is very sweet, but also naive, goofy, extremely self-conscious, desperately afraid of her "mother", and feels very much like a teenager doing her first really bad thing. But she's also just endearingly enthusiastic and happy that you can't help but love her.

Phineas and Ferb had some great songs, Family Guy occasionally has some as well (such as the episode where Peter and Quagmire form a folk duo :) )

I think you mentioned the animated show 'Drawn Together' in a previous post, I don't remember much of it (I only saw one or two episodes back when it first aired) but there's one thing I do remember, the characters are being punished by having their food allowance lowered so they're all hungry, one of the characters tricks the 'Disney Princess' into singing so all these little woodland critters appear and then you see they've all been cooked and eaten, the Princess being complete oblivious to the situation.

Secret (Responsible For The Black Rocks)- Frederic’s using of the Sun Drop Flower in order to save his wife is what caused the Black Rocks to grow. Now that they threaten his kingdom, he wants to keep this hidden from many.
Relationship (Queen Arianna)- Frederic’s love of his wife is so great that he disregarded the advice of an important advisor in saving her life using the Sun Drop Flower.
Relationship (Rapunzel)- Frederic missed out on eighteen years of his little girl’s life- this has made him very protective and eager to always be with her.

-The King was a non-speaking character in Tangled, and was pretty much known only for his morose sadness, so they actually had to invent a character for him. I think they did a pretty solid job- a fairly stoic man, he is more calm than the “Angry Father” archetype you see a lot of, and the stresses of rule are treated more seriously than comedically- Frederic is frequently seen exhausted or disappointed in himself- heavy is the head that wears the crown. His decisions aren’t always correct, either, but usually come from a good place- his destruction of the “Sun Drop Flower” to save his wife’s life set off the conflict of the first season, and his decision to keep Rapunzel stuck in Corona (a new kind of “prison” for her) really bothers him. In the end, he comes off a little bit like a more positive version of MOTHER GOTHEL, keeping his daughter “captive”, but for less selfish reasons.

-In a neat character bit, he never goes for the “Mr. Lodge & Archie” relationship with Eugene, like I feared. While Eugene is a screw-up and a butt-monkey, the King is never anything but cordial with him. As he stated early on- “You brought my little girl home to me”- he is eternally grateful. Frederic is so stoic that even when he later recruits Eugene in an attempt at pranking a rival king, he never even comes off like a giddy little kid or anything.

About the Performer: Clancy Brown is best known to nerds for playing Lex Luthor in the DC Animated Universe- a big role that really proved his range- his deep, booming voice means he usually ends up playing Dumb Thugs (like Wolf on Gargoyles), but Luthor was a cool, confident genius. Here, he plays a calm, thoughtful, paternal figure with a real sense of dignity. Brown has also had a lot of live-action roles, but mostly in bit parts for the past 30 years- he was in The Shawshank Redemption and Highlander, but hasn’t done much on that front since. He’s currently General Eiling on CW’s The Flash, and Mr. Krabs on Spongebob Squarepants, which is really the only role where he alters his voice in the slightest- he nearly always uses the same tone and inflections when speaking, which is quite humorous when you realize how disparate most of his biggest recurring roles are (Luthor, Long Feng, Wolf & Mr. Krabs are all VERY different characters).

He returns with a vengeance, doing whatever he can (kidnapping, extortion, attempted murder) in order to break the Black Rocks.

Total: Abilities: 22 / Skills: 24--12 / Advantages: 5 / Powers: 26 / Defenses: 12 (77)

-The Alchemist seemed like a pretty innocuous version of the whole "Building the Supporting Cast" thing you have to do when adapting a movie into a TV series- as Tangled had only "witches and magic hair" in terms of supernatural stuff, there was also a need to show a bit more of that aspect. And so we had The Alchemist- actually a young boy whose experiements often went a bit out of control. Smart and eager to please, to the point where his stuff got a bit destructive, he was a solid supporting cast member. He even had a crush on grumpy Cassandra, calling her "milady" and fawning over her. It was... cute.

-This is what made it sting when he slowly TURNED EVIL. See, his lecturing father had warned him against messing with the Black Rocks using his alchemy, and he ended up setting off a chain reaction that froze his father in stone. Desperate and afraid, he begged for help from Rapunzel... who had to turn him away, as her kingdom was in disarray and she couldn't abandon them in their time of need. Varian, in a chilling moment, simply said that "They... will... PAY". And so he kidnaps various people, turns his beloved pet into a monster using his alchemy, and nearly destroys all of Corona, all in a misguided attempt at making his father proud of him, and proving that his inventions AREN'T going to just get everyone killed.

-Varian's stats are unimpressive physically (he is TINY, even for a fourteen year old), but his potions are quite potent. His inventions grow in power, too- going from barely-working machines into GIANT MECHS (which, honestly, don't really fit the Tangled motif and seem rather out of place in the show). So he's PL 9, but weak defensively, requiring a lot of Mooks and back-up in order to use his inventions properly.

About the Performer: Jeremy Jordan KILLS IT as Varian- he's initially pretty forgettable as the "Likeable Nerd" kid, but when he turns EVIL, you actually sort of buy his obsessive desire for redemption. He's actually in his early thirties, and this role is basically one of Disney's trademark "Thank You"s for a past performance, as he was the male lead in the successful musical version of Newsies. Similar roles went to Lance, and in the '90s, we saw Susan Egan get the Megara role after playing Belle on Broadway.

Wreck-It Ralph

WRECK-IT RALPH (2012):
Written by:
Rich Moore, Phil Johnston, Jim Reardon & Jennifer Lee

Only 6-8 months after I first did my Disney set, out came this one- Basically "Toy Story but with video games", this movie is one of the modern Yearly Animated Classics from Disney, and features tons of pop culture references and a hint of nostalgia for an older era- the characters are all sprites from the video games in one particular arcade (evidently they only hang out with the characters from that one arcade's games- there's only one of each guy, and when a game gets unplugged, the characters are treated like they're dead.

The hero of the picture is Wreck-It Ralph, the villain of Fix-It Felix, Jr. an '80s-style old school arcade game, and he's tired of being the villain- the people in the game world don't care for him and treat him like he's actually evil (though Felix is polite to him), he speaks out about his treatment in a Vill-Anon meeting (containing many of the game's pop culture gags- M. Bison, King Koopa, a Pac-Man Ghost, Robotnik & even the not-really-evil Zangief are all there), and longs for "Something More" like he's a Disney Princess or something. Getting caught up in another video game (a Halo-ish First Person Shooter), then transferred to a kiddie-style Kart-Racer, he gets the game worlds merging (a major no-no), and suddenly everyone's life is in danger when the Halo-Robo-Aliens invade the Kart World and threaten to overrun it.

Along the way, he interacts with Sgt. Calhoun (a hard-nosed female marine voiced by Jane Lynch from Glee) Felix (Jack McBrayer from "30 Rock" playing basically himself), Vanellope Von Schweetz (Sarah Silverman in an "Annoying Kid" role who's also a bit of a Mentor Figure in how she explains her Kart World's rules to Ralph), and more. The film is quite good, but I found it rather predictable- except for the "oh, DUH" reveal of the villain, I was ten minutes ahead of the whole thing- "oh gee, I wonder if the sarcastic young kid is going to make good with Ralph in the end in a sweet moment and then defeat the awful clearly-evil guy" and stuff. The love story feels a bit unnatural and tacked-on as well, and I've never been a big fan of McBrayer.

John C. Reilly is legit good as Ralph, though, and the movie's sense of nostalgia is palpable and very neat- the references to real-life games work even better than the gags in Toy Story, and don't feel as cloying as a lot of "HUH-HUH we made a comment about something that you know existed once!" stuff that a lot of modern cartoons do. Some of the sad moments really do fit the plot (especially when Ralph destroys Vanellope's kart that he'd initially helped build, all thanks to the lies of King Candy).

Oddly, it'd been originally planned for YEARS, going all the way back to the late 1980s, but only got put into production for real in recent years.

Reception & Cultural Impact:
The movie was another MONSTER hit for Disney, as most CGI films are these days (if released by a major studio, anyways). It made nearly what Tangled (attached to the Disney Princess franchise) did, and was a hit overseas as well. Overall, it was then the fifth-highest-grossing Disney release of all time in terms of sheer dollars- surpassed only Tangled, The Lion King, Tarzan & Aladdin…. Until Frozen and Zootopia came out, of course.

The movie did prove big enough, however, that it ended the moratorium on Disney Canon sequels, with a new movie coming out in late 2018.

Initiative +2

Defenses:
Dodge +7 (DC 17), Parry +8 (DC 18), Toughness +7, Fortitude +7, Will +6

Complications:
Motivation ("I Want a Medal, Too")- Ralph does not enjoy playing the villain, and wants to be a good guy. He desperately wants to win a medal of his own, the way Felix does. Alas, he does not understand what it means to be a hero, simply believing that having a medal makes it so- his selfishness nearly causes great destruction.
Responsibility (The Rules of Video Games)- You do not cross games (you can be killed permanently if you do, or cause glitches), and you play your designated role properly.
Reputation (Bad Guy)- The people of "Fix-It Felix, Jr." do not trust Ralph, and treat him like the villain he portrays.
Relationship (Vanellope von Schweetz)- The annoying young girl is nonetheless being picked on and bullied, and Ralph eventually takes a liking to her, realizing they've both been mistreated for who they are. When he discovers that she is a "glitch" and cannot leave the game, he becomes devoted to protecting her (should her glitching be discovered, the game cabinet would be disconnected and she would die).
Temper (Wrecking Things)- Ralph is prone to destroying things in fits of anger.
Accident (Clumsy)- Even when he ISN'T angry, Ralph tends to wreck things- he's a clumsy bumbler, and has even killed Felix by accident!

Total: Abilities: 48 / Skills: 38--19 / Advantages: 10 / Powers: 42 / Defenses: 11 (130)

-Ralph is the Donkey Kong-like villain of the Fix-It Felix, Jr. game, though isn't a bad sort in real life. He lives in a pile of bricks outside of town (the remnants of his home, which has been bulldozed to build an apartment building), and every time someone drops a token into the cabinet, he says "I'm Gonna Wreck It!" and destroys an apartment building- the player has to play Felix, who fixes the damage while Ralph dumps things on him.

-Ralph is actually a decent, soft-spoken guy, and a bit depressed about his role- he invades another game- Hero's Duty, to play an FPS hero and win a Medal (like the ones Felix wins in their game). An accident ends up sending him to a Kart Racing game called Sugar Rush with one of the menacing Cy-Bugs of Hero's Duty attached to him- the Cy-Bugs soon overrun that game, threatening their world and his new friend Vanellope with destruction (and all of the characters would therefore become homeless- Vanellope, as a "glitch", can't leave the game and would be killed). They go through the "Antagonists, then Friends" schtick familiar to Disney fans (though usually it leads Princesses to marriage, not platonic friendship).

-Ralph is a pretty good fighter, and can do a ton of damage to structures with his powers, and is still pretty dangerous to the Cy-Bugs. His raw strength is hard to determine given the cartoony atmosphere, but 3 tons is plenty. He's not too bright, charismatic or good at making decisions, but his quick thinking saves not only Sugar Rush and Vanellope, but the entire Arcade.

About the Performer: John C. Reilly is one of those actors who’s known for being very skilled, and could easily be a dramatic star… but he has such a goofy, ugly mug that he’s doomed to play schmucks for his entire life. He does a lot of work with Will Ferrell, and appears in many ensemble casts (where he often is the most memorable part of a film), but ultimately doesn’t get a lot of big solo projects.

I really did enjoy Wreck-It-Ralph, though I'm not sure how I feel about the sequel. Also, I noticed that the Cy-Bugs didn't get a writeup in the original set, thoguh I suppose they are quite variable in nature due to the whole "they become what they eat" thing. I can understand the villain not getting a bio at the time, because spoilers, though it's probably fair game now. (Also, I'd imagine the various Sugar Rush racers are mostly just Vanellope's statline without the glitch powers.)

I didn’t remember the act-Bugs AT ALL, so reading my old review was informative. Actually, I barely recall King Candy either, and all my research suggests that he was near universally praised as the best part. I have a build for our villain, at least.

What's especially funny about Wreck-It Ralph is how much of a lie the trailer is. It paints the picture of it being some big video game crossover, where the actual appearances of other characters is incredibly brief. As Jab has mentioned, the scenes with the other Disney properties is likewise going to be very brief in the sequel and it's mostly going to focus on the original characters of the film and the weird Mad Max scenario.
