Biollante was kind of a wake up call for me and my brothers when we first watched it. At that point in our lives, all of the Godzilla we'd seen had been stuff from MST3K or a few of the older movies like Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla, which were fairly lighthearted movies all things being equal.

So when we saw a new Godzilla movie at our local Blockbuster (I miss Blockbuster), we thought nothing of renting it.

Wow.

Holy SHIT.

Biollante was TERRIFYING. It was an AWESOME monster design brought to life in a way that was pants-crappingly terrifying. It was a really decent film and one that made us realize some of these Godzilla films could get really f***ing dark.

Biollante is awesome, yeah. I also noticed that the write-up had no mention of her initial Rose Form, but I suppose it's rather redundant- it's just a weaker, smaller (85 meters) Biollante.

As for the Giant Condor- heh, I imagine some of these background kaiju are easy edits of some of your older "Giant Animal" builds.

-Often called "The Giant Octopus", Oodako showed up in King Kong (vs) Godzilla, filmed via both puppet and by creative use of live animals (one of which became the director's dinner!). One crawls into a native village, attacking it to get some special juice- King Kong then arrives and attacks it, driving it off by throwing fence-posts and rocks at it. In Frankenstein (vs) Baragon, a similar creature appears in an alternate ending that wasn't used for the final film- it attacks Frankenstein after he defeats Baragon, dragging him to his apparent death beneath the waves- this scene was filmed at the behest of American studios, who were impressed by the creature that fought King Kong. Another pops up in War of the Gargantuas, sinking a fishing boat. One nearly appeared in Final Wars, but no puppet was ever made.

-Oodako here is mighty, but a PL 12 is nothing before creatures like Toho's giant version of Kong.

Oodaku's name 大ダコ really is just Giant Octopus.

大 is usually read as dai- but in some cases it's read as ō- or Oo- (usually in older words) and is used as a suffix that means "big" or "large;" ダコ tako or dako (depending on your romanization scheme) means "octopus."

It's like how "Oozaru" really just means "Giant Monkey/Ape" But people still insist on using the Japanese name for..reasons beyond me.

The Criterion Collection version of Godzilla (1954) has a commentary track that opens with a fantastic rant from film historian David Kalat that tears into American fans who insist that Gojira is "correct" and Godzilla is "incorrect," where he points out that ゴジラ can be read as either ゴ goshira; ゴ gojira; or, ゴ gozira. All depending on which romanization scheme you use and to 99.9% of native Japanese speakers there isn't any detectable difference between these pronunciations.

Enemy (Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan)
Reputation (Villain)- King Ghidorah is the most-feared monster in the entire galaxy, so much so that it took seven other Kaiju to kill him. Expect his mere appearance to mobilize the entire planet against him.
Motivation (KICKING ASS)- Ghidorah is a tremendous force for destruction, having wiped out the Venusian civilization centuries ago. He either does so of his own volition, or under the direction of various controlling alien masters.

Total: Abilities: 8 / Skills: 16--8 / Advantages: 33 / Powers: 241 / Defenses: 30 (320)

-King Ghidorah- Godzilla's greatest foe by far. So popular was he that he appeared in a half-dozen Showa films, and got two Heisei films as well. THEN he showed up in a handful of Millennium films, including being the final boss of Final Wars! This guy is EXTREME- the sum totality of everything you ever thought was cool about fantasy animals as a kid (breath weapons, wings, dragon stuff, multiple limbs), and combined into one supreme form. Ghidorah might as well have had "BMF" tattooed on his forehead- a three-headed super-Kaiju with triple Electrical Beams (called "Gravity Beams" for whatever reason), Sonic Speed, and the highest durability level of the entire Showa Era. This guy was so hardcore that it took Godzilla, Mothra AND Rodan to send him off the first time, and SEVEN monsters to "kill" him! He of course returned (you can't keep a villain THIS awesome dead for too long- everyone else just seems lesser compared to him), did some more stuff (getting gradually weaker as things went on- eventually Godzilla & another monster could see off Ghidorah and another monster at once).

-One of the best things about Ghidorah, aside from his monstrous appearance, is his trademark "call"- in the Showa Era, it was created to sound like a bell. Which sounds unmanly and such, but when you hear it, it has this dreadful, haunting melody to it- like some kind of otherworldly laughter. The incessant chirping makes sure he never sounds like Just Another Big Monster- this is something so alien and inhuman that it makes him all the more scary.

-Possibly the greatest Ghidorah moment is in Destroy All Monsters, where SEVEN KAIJU ally in order to put a stop to him. What does Ghidorah do when he sees seven monsters, each over 50 meters tall, waiting to kick his ass? Does he flee, like any sane person would do? HELL NO- he's all "OH YOU BITCHES WANT SOME, IS THAT IT??", and immediately touches down and starts whupping ass on everything he sees. Only a concentrated effort, the tenacious Anguirus, and a massive triple-team are able to stop him.

-Ghidorah is a monster unlike any other- huge, all-powerful, and packing more overall strength than anyone else in the Showa era. His "Gravity Beams" are basically electrical attacks, using either a Line, Split or Super Combined Form that also explodes on impact). He can also Fly (doing the same tricks Rodan can), attack with Extra Limbs, and take a punch. His Advantages are beyond any other Kaiju, allowing him numerous options as well as unbelievable toughness (only Godzilla also manages to have Last Stand, Withstand Damage (Trade Defenses For Toughness) AND Great Endurance). King Ghidorah's just... unstoppable. He's so tough that his Heisei version is actually WEAKER, since it was KILLED by Godzilla in it's first movie. Weak pathetic fool- Showa Ghidorah would probably beat the hell out of the thing, despite being out-scaled in terms of size.

Now that's how you do a solid villain design.

Will Monster X/Keiser Ghidorah be included? I dunno if he's different enough from regular Ghidorah, but he does have two forms, and telekinesis, and might be even more powerful, but I'm not sure on that.

I used to like to watch King Ghidorah when I was young, but was also scared he would kill one of the other monsters. He just seemed so unstoppable! :o

Ares wrote: Sat Jun 16, 2018 7:21 am I kind of liked Jet Jaguar as an unambiguously good guy (at least when not under alien control), and while he could use a little re-design, I actually kind of dig the guy.

Funny enough, in a recent IDW Godzilla series, Jet was treated as basically the Superman of the setting and primary hero of humanity, being the all around badass on the side of good. How badass?

Image

He knocked Godzilla the fuck out with ONE PUNCH. And this was after taking a combo of atomic breath to the face and getting tail-smashed for good measure. Jet just gets back up, KTFO's Godzilla, flies his unconscious body into the middle of the ocean, and drops him off.
That strikes me as ridiculous Power-Geeking, especially as it's a bottom-tier character doing it. That's worse than Quick Kick wiping out Snake-Eyes. Did Aubrey Sitterson write this?

Right down to the part where he's only on screen for 12 minutes in a 118 minute long movie!
