THE FIRST FIRMAMENT
Created By:
Al Ewing

-The First Firmament is the Big Bad of Al Ewing’s Ultimates series, which went out to explain the new cosmic order in the rebooted Marvel Universe. The Firmament is actually the ORIGINAL Eternity- the first embodiment of the first universe. Several later Eternitys were formed by past universes being born (Galen of Taa being a survivor of the preceding one).

-Angered over its lack of power, the Firmament used its power to trap Eternity, who was weakened by the post-Secret War soft reboot. It also gets Logos, the combination of Order and Chaos, to fight on its behalf. Ultimately, only some of Earth’s heroes (basically a group of prominent minorities, as is Ewing’s specialty), a “Lifebringer” version of Galactus, and some other Cosmic forces (including Ego- now with a body, preceding Eternities and Infinity), combine together to stop him.

I love the Phoenix Force and the pics you used.

? Shouldn't the Phoenix Force itself have it's powers at level 30?

I mean, isn't Xavier and Jean in 2019 at 16-18 with their powers (TP, TK)?

While hosting the PF like in Morrison's run, Jean would be above 18 with her powers, maybe at 20. Jean as Phoenix 22, as DP 24 and as White Phoenix of the Crown 26.
I don’t think the Phoenix is more powerful than Galactus, but it’s pretty vague at times. It tends to just do X-stuff, not fight other cosmic beings.
When Rachel faced Galactus in Excalibur, the general impression was that the Phoenix would be able to overpower Galactus, but that would shorten the lifespan of all the races across the universe, since the Phoenix taps into the lifeforce of future generations.
"You're right. Sorry. Holy shit," I breathed, "heckhounds.”

Complications:
Responsibility (Passing Judgement)- The Living Tribunal acts as the judge for all cosmic matters in the Marvel Universe- it is only seen when matters of great importance are brought to it's attention. Beings such as Eternity and Galactus are often seen pleading for it's favor, which may or may not come. It's three faces reflect Equity, Vengeance and Necessity, while a fourth side of it's face is void (once suggested to be The Stranger).

Total: Abilities: 172 / Skills: 120--60 / Advantages: 42 / Powers: 3,537 / Defenses: 44 (3,855)

-The Living Tribunal is a little-seen entity that is still canonically the biggest dog we've ever seen in Marvel Comics- it's only suggested that it serves "The One Above All" (not the Celestial by the same name). He's the one who gets to decide whether or not the Infinity Gems work (yes, he can basically de-power and re-power them at will), and can judge the entire universe as a whole. Though he's since become known as the judge fo the entire Multiverse, he debuted in Doctor Strange forcing the Doctor to prove that the Earth was worth sparing. His intentions were to destroy the planet for its potential for evil, but Strange successfully got it spared. Curiously, this event is a one-off Stan tale (one of the few Cosmic Beings not created alongside another top-level '60s artist), and he doesn't appear for another twenty-ish years.

-More-modern appearances of the Tribunal establish that he judges other Cosmic Beings, and the nature of reality itself. His three faces respresent "Equity" (hooded face), "Vengeance" (partly-shrouded face), and "Necessity" (fully-shrouded face, which mirrors the face of the observer as an indication to always judge how we would wish ourselves to be judged). The fourth side is a void, possibly once holding the face of The Stranger (or so the Tribunal claimed). In the Infinity stories, the Tribunal is so powerful that it can de-power the Infinity Gauntlet, but chooses not to without the judgment of other beings.

-The Tribunal is thus barely a character so much as an engine for parts of the plot. The gravitas and respect it was offered was actually fairly consistent- even ETERNITY bowed before this thing, and judgments were final. In Matt Fraction's somewhat-silly FF book, the Tribunal slaps down Doom (with Watcher-level stolen powers again) and punishes him tremendously for misbehavior, as cosmic powers aren't to be trifled with. Unlike say, the Celestials or Galactus, it was never used to just job to the Hot New Thing, nor be imperiled by a Plot Device, nor easily tricked by Thanos- even JIM STARLIN understood that this guy needed to be unbeatable and maintain credibility.

-Which is why it was so shocking to see it KILLED BY THE BEYONDERS in the end of Jon Hickman's insane Avengers run. The Beyonders, hailing from outside the Multiverse, assault all of Marvel's Cosmics, slaughtering them one by one, ending with the Living Tribunal. This probably irked me more than anything else about the final moments, as Hickman was basically doing the comic book equivalent of whipping out his dick and measuring it right there. "See? MY threat is so powerful than even the LIVING TRIBUNAL falls before it! *fapfapfapfap*!!". It's even weirder when friggin' DOCTOR DOOM and the MOLECULE MAN pop up and defeat the Beyonders by outsmarting them. Like... why did NONE OF THE COSMICS SEE THIS? This kind of casual "oh well they're just dumb" stuff really comes off as odd, with mortal men often able to routinely outmaneuver ancient intelligences.

-The Living Tribunal has last appeared in Al Ewing's The Infinites, where he acted as a judge over Galactus (now transformed into a Lifebringer instead of a Devourer), with Master Order & Lord Chaos insisting that Galactus be transformed back, "for universal balance". However, when the Tribunal announces that there is a "new balance in the cosmos", and that everything is still in flux enough that nothing is set... Order & Chaos decide to KILL HIM, and take his position for themselves. Now THIS was a bit more unique than Hickman's dumb "my guys are just more powerful"- this was actually a bit clever. Order & Chaos are beaten by the end, and the Tribunal is seen setting their punishment by the end of Ewing's comic.

-He's barely even spoken to an Earthling before (Doctor Strange & Quasar being the only two I know of), and is the highest of the top-tier. The Marvel (vs) DC story laughably asserted that The Spectre was his equivalent in the DC Universe, perhaps ignoring the 500 times The Spectre failed to do something, or got controlled by a villain or ran away because he couldn't affect the bad guy or something, but whatever- DC never really had a "Top Guy" the way that Marvel did. Though Marvel's managed to kill the character TWICE in like three years, so maybe they'll be on the same level some day.

-The Tribunal effectively takes what Thanos or Eternity can do, amps it up a bit, then throws in a couple more things (he can de-power all Cosmic Effects like The Infinity Gauntlet or Eternity, rendering them nothing). It's pretty hard to be more top-tier than this. It's probably a thousand times easier to just say "The Living Tribunal is PL X- he nullifies your attacks and defeats the lot of you", but like I said, that's QUITTER TALK, I wanted to stat the damn over-pointed bastard out.

Power Instinct

POWER INSTINCT:
-Power Instinct is one of the longest running Fighting Game franchises to remain totally obscure in the West. Here, it's largely known as "the one with the old lady" if it's even known at all. Video Games Magazine gave an adaptation a mediocre review when I first got into video games, and I think that's the only reason why I know it.

Power Instinct is known as Gōketsuji Ichizoku "Gōketsuji Family") in its native Japan, and was created by Atlus, often more known for brilliant Tactical RPGs than Fighters. The games featured a "Transformation" feature, in which several characters could change appearance and fighting style by executing certain moves. There are nine characters in the first game, with eight competing to replace the ninth, an elderly woman Final Boss, as leader of the family. It was released in 1993 for Arcades, Super NES, and Sega Genesis (though that version never went overseas).

It was... not really well-reviewed. People thought it was OKAY, but it was definitely well below SNK and Capcom's offerings in the same genre. The quirky sense of humor and weird characters doomed it to relative obscurity, though was also the most notable thing about it- kind of a double-whammy. A major issue I have is that a ton of the characters are INCREDIBLY generic, featuring a lot of "Person in Normal Clothes" designs, as if a t-shirt and jeans is a real costume). Despite that, however, it would do well enough to earn SEVERAL sequels!

1994 saw the release of Power Instinct 2 for Arcades and PlayStation, having now hit the Next Generation era. Here, the graphics looked EVEN WORSE, with gaming in general having advanced a great deal in only one year. It introduced a "Stress Meter" that fills when you're attacked, thus allowing Super Moves. Five new characters join the game (including the MOTHER of the old ladies from the first game!), for a total of thirteen. Only the Arcade version was released overseas.

The games lost the PI branding in later installments, with Goketsuji Gaiden: Saikyou Densetsu being released in Japan. It's basically a remake of PI2, with a few new characters. It's also more of a King of Fighters-like "Team Battle" game, albeit with two characters instead of three, and is typically called Power Instinct Legends over here. Groove On Fight came out in 1997 for Arcades and Sega Saturn, taking place twenty years after the prior tournament. Darker and more serious, like Garou: Mark of the Wolves, it's still humorous. It also COMPLETELY dumps the old roster save two of the old ladies, fighting as one character, with only eleven characters being playable. This went over about as well as you'd expect- dumping a four-year old cast in favor of newbies resulted in pretty much every one of these characters being forgotten for the next game, which came out a massive six years later, as Fighting Games had by this point fallen out of favor with the general public. Groove on Fight didn't go over well, as the excellent-looking graphics gave way to very poor character movements.

Matrimelee is a later game, coming out in 2003 and featuring some Rage of the Dragons characters as Guest Stars, and most of the PI2 characters. EVERYONE from Groove on Fight was discarded, which to me indicates that only the "original" ones were terribly well-remembered. Featuring no transformations, this game was one of the final ones to be released for the Neo*Geo. The plot of this game was a King who wanted a husband or wife for one of his two children, thus enabling strong heirs. The daughter, Princess Sissy, is the actual Final Boss, and is a major recurring character and reason for fighting in later games as well.

Shin Gōketsuji Ichizoku: Bonnō Kaihō came out for the PS2, and was a sequel to Matrimelee. The Transformation feature returns, as do most of the Matrimelee characters. Here, the fighters battle for any wish of their choosing from the King. A sequel to THAT came out in 2009, subtitled Senzou Kuyo- this is the final game in the entire series.

Ultimately, PI is not a terribly well-remembered game, and if it IS remembered, it's for the "Hahahaha WTF?" nature of the game's roster, particularly the old lady who throws her dentures as a weapon. The other weird characters (like the muscular Angela, who later becomes much more feminine) are sometimes discussed, and the rest of the cast, which can be VERY generic (a Ryu knock-off, a Ninja, a Native American...), is entirely ignored.

Power Instinct (1993):
Otane Goketsuji- Younger sister of Oume. The infamous "Old Lady Who Throws Her Dentures as an Attack". Probably the Main Character of the series, all in all.
Angela Belti- Italian strongwoman. My PI waifu. Gets more feminine in the later games.
Annie Hamilton- Overbearing, bossy English rich girl. Wears generic clothes.
Keith Wayne- American Playboy in the "Cody/Axel Generic American Fighter" t-shirt & jeans. An asshole street-fighter with a soft spot for the ladies. Even OLDER ones.
Reiji Oyama- Ryu parody/knock-off with near-identical attacks.
Saizo Hattori- Ninja. Shy.
Thin Nen- Violent Shaolin monk with "obscene desires".
White Buffalo- Generic Native American. Big Guy.
Oume Goketsuji- Old lady, and Pallette Swap of her sister Otane. The Final Boss & family matriarch.

Power Instinct 2 (1994):
* All the previous characters return. Otane is now unplayable, being the game's boss, replacing Oume (who is now the playable one).
Oshima Goketsuji- Oume & Otani's MOTHER. The actual family matriarch, it turns out.
Kurara Hanakouji- Magical Girl witch. Becomes very popular and inspires a lot of later characters.
Kanji Kokuin- Oume's ex-husband. A rip-off of Master Roshi from Dragon Ball, complete with the moustache and surprisingly-muscular physique.
Kinta Kokuin- Kindergartener and Kanji's younger brother. A brat. Turns into a man in a dog costume.
Sahad Asran Ryuto- Lebanese guy with a Magic Lamp.

Power Instinct Legends (1995):
* Kanji is now the game's boss, having won the last tournament.
Super Kurara- Now separate from Kurara.
Pochi- Now separate from Kinta.
Kuroko- One of the previous assistants, now given a character.
Chuck- The Final Boss, hired by Kanji. Never reappears.

Groove On Fight (1997):
* Otane & Oume are the only returning characters, fighting as one character- everyone else is gone. Everyone fights in teams, now (I'll list the teammates after one another).
Falco- Old Englishman. Impressed the twins by reading their moves.
Larry Light- American optimist.
Chris Wayne- Violent young thug, the son of Keith & Annie from the first game.
Sujiroku Tenjinbashi- Businessman out to clean up his family's dirty business.
Hizumi Yukinoue- A kid obsessed with ninjas, manga, etc.
Solis R8000- Policewoman from the future.
M.A.D.- Mysterious scientist.
Popura Hanakouji- Kurara's daughter, also a magical witch.
Remi Otogiri- Descendant of an evil witch.
Rudolph Gartheimer- Ruthless businessman out for revenge against the sisters for ruining his family.
Damian Shade- Rudolph's partner and lover, but is shot by Bristol before the game takes place. A Secret Character in the Sega Saturn version.
Bristol Weller- Aristocratic Englishman who made a pact with demons.
Bristol-D- The true identity of Bristol- a Vampiric Demon Summoner who transforms your partner blue and uses THEM as his partner.

Matrimelee (2003):
* Replaces Groove On Fight's cast with the returning cast of Power Instinct 2, minus Angela, Oshima, Chuck, Sahad & Kinta- only Angela & Kinta ever show up again.
Buntaro Kuno- Delinquent schoolboy out to meet Reiji Oyama, his idol.
Shintaro Kuno- Buntaro's younger brother, there for the same raeson as Buntaro.
Hikaru Jomon- Tomboy student & cane-fighter.
Olof Linderoth- Princess Sissy's bodyguard.
Princess Sissy- The new Final Boss, the Princess of Certain Country, who demands that potential suiters fight her.

The following characters from Rage of the Dragons guest star for this game only (they will be statted when I do that game):
Jimmy
Elias
Lynn
Jones

Shin Goketsuji Ichizoku (2006):
* The cast of Matrimelee returns, along with Angela & Kinta. The four Rage of the Dragons characters do not reappear.
Bobby Strong- New Final Boss.

Shin Goketsuji Ichizoku- Senzo Kuyo (2009):
* The previous cast returns.
Sandra Belti- Angela's grandmother.
Elizabeth Belti- Sandra's younger sister.
Prince- Princess Sissy's older brother.
Rin Oyama- Reiji's neice. Young Kid fighter.
Takumi Hattori- Saizo's younger cousin. Wears a mask.
Shinjuro Gotetsuji- Final Boss.

More or less my thoughts on the matter.

This kind of casual "oh well they're just dumb" stuff really comes off as odd, with mortal men often able to routinely outmaneuver ancient intelligences.
This is basically one of my issues with modern Marvel as a whole, Hickman's run in particular. The setting by its nature needs a fair bit of flexibility and characters are open to interpretation, but like Civil War's 1 and 2, Hickman's whole mess basically only works if the characters are acting wildly out of character and if things are done to twist things to suit the story's need. Which might be fine if this was an original story with original characters you had created to fit these roles, but in an established setting, the stories are supposed to be crafted to serve the characters, not the other way around.
-The Living Tribunal has last appeared in Al Ewing's The Infinites, where he acted as a judge over Galactus (now transformed into a Lifebringer instead of a Devourer), with Master Order & Lord Chaos insisting that Galactus be transformed back, "for universal balance". Yeah, that whole bit was just goofy.

Yeah, having the Spectre be the opposite number of the Living Tribunal was a bit weird, though the Spectre's power does vary heavily from story to story. As a sort of ultimate plot device, the Spectre is literally as powerful as the Presence, AKA God wants him to be. At best, they both fit the notion of these hooded cosmic beings that judge others at the behest of their universes version of God. Though it made the whole concept of the Brothers kind of weird, being the embodiments of their respective multiverses, though later someone tried to pull a Beyonder and retcon the Brothers into actually being less powerful.

Maybe Destiny would have been a better fit? I don't know.

Sometimes words hurt, Jab. Superboy is crying now
To be fair, T-Shirt and Jeans Superboy spends half his time sulking anyway.

Power Instinct PLs

Post by Jabroniville »

Power Levels in Power Instinct:
-As a game with several sequels and a recurring cast, PI is a tad more elevated than the usual "Lame Fighter", where guys often top out at PL 6.5 or 7. Here, a major recurring character will probably be PL 8. Bosses may be higher, though in many games, the Boss simply folds into the regular cast. Characters have pretty generic movesets on the whole, at least in M&M terms, as it's usually Blast/Strike/Grapple, with the occasional Anti-Air or Multiattack (which again, adds an Affliction to make them a bit more effective and likely to be used). However, Power Instinct characters differ by their sheer NUMBER of Blasts- nobody just shoots out one Fireball and that's it. Instead, characters tend to have PILES of Blasts, with Annie for example firing out a Golden Swan and a Photon Blast. Otane can throw either her dentures, energized sculptures of her FACE, or even multiple bullets. This means that characters are typically only one PL lower than normal with their Ranged attacks... and remove the usual "Predictability" weakness as far as those are concerned, representing their ability to shake things up and shoot out a different energy attack, even though in M&M stats, a Blast is a Blast (in a Fighting Game, the arc or size of the blast's "Hit Box" can COMPLETELY alter your strategy in a way that M&M can't reflect).

Relationship (Angela Belti)- Sahad has a crush on Angela, and wishes to impress her in the tournament.
Weakness (Predictability)- Sahad cannot simply "spam" out the same attack over and over again, as the opponent will expect the attacks, and be ready for them (and a counterattack). The third time he tries the same technique (or same combo of techniques) in a short span, he will be at -2 to Accuracy, AND to his Active Defenses in that round. All will decrease by 2 every successive round the same move is done. However, Blasts may be used continuously with no penalties.

Total: Abilities: 42 / Skills: 30--15 / Advantages: 7 + 9 / Powers: 8 / Defenses: 12 (93)

-Sahad is a Lebanese fighter with a Magic Lamp. He fights using a combination of Yoga Fire (more of a short-ranged damage effect than an Area Attack) and a green throwing dagger. The idea behind Sahad was to create a character inspired by Lawrence of Arabia, but they ultimately just made him an Arabic guy. An introverted sort, his mother's family are descended from witches, and so he was given magical training in addition to the martial arts. He only appears in Power Instinct 2 and its immediate upgrade, so isn't a frequent character. The design is quite boring, being that of a tanned guy with banana-yellow DBZ pants with red bits.

-Kuroko has the same concept as Kuroko from Samurai Shodown- they are observants in all black. In PI, they act as assistants for the fighters (they follow you along the screen). This one, however, is a 14-year old boy. His only appearance as an actual FIGHTER is in Power Instinct Legends, so he's a PL lower than the other characters. He's a smaller, faster fighter who uses two different Blasts (a fan and a red sphere) and a slicing Fan Attack in the air.

-Chinnen (typically called "Thin" in most translations- they only recently changed this) is an unusual character type- an Evil Buddhist Monk. The only other one I can think of is Lei Fei in Virtua Fighter. He's apparently a parody of the typical Buddhist Monks seen in anime & video games up till that point. Usually free of worldly desires, Chinnen is instead evil and obsessed with them, desiring women, food and money. Despite this, he occasionally gives off Zen-like sayings. He joins the tournament just for money, Matrimelee to marry a rich woman, and in the final two games due to a midlife crisis. Like the rest of the Debut Cast (save Angela), he makes it to every game but Groove On Fight, despite never really gaining much characterization. His design is rather plain, but he fits the Dragon Ball Z style so well that I would guess it was deliberate... if not for the fact that DBZ based that look on actual Buddhist Monks.

-Chinnen is actually a very well-rounded fighter, packing Blasts, a Strike, a Deflect, a Multiattack, and even a STUNNING attack- the "Curse Seal", which works much like Rei's "Akyurou Tenzan!" attack in Sailor Moon, stunning foes temporarily.
