-Probably the dumbest member of the Female Furies, Stompa is a burly, ugly chick in a 1950s bomber get-up (for some reason), who stomps the ground alot. Pretty much your usual, dunderheaded Powerhouse character. Not much interesting to go on at all, though I guess the team needed a powerhouse. Curiously, Marvel did a take-off of the Furies in The Grapplers, and Stompa got a near-exact replica in Poundcakes, an E-Level Marvel villainess.

-Pretty much a standard Thing/Colossus-type Powerhouse with a gimmick, she's a brawler who can send out a big ol' Burst Area Trip/Blast combo, knocking everyone around so long as they're touching the ground when she stomps. It's not a GREAT gimmick, but she's handy in a fight.

About the Performer: Diane Delano has a lot of TV roles, such as Barbara Semanski on "Northern Exposure", and the newer show "Popular". She plays a lot of "Burly" women in cartoons, including Stompa here, Big Barda on "The Brave and the Bold", and Pantha on "Teen Titans".

From what I remember, the New Gods found Earth fascinating for some reason. I think was the idea that humans and human culture changes so quickly compared to the virtually immortal gods that they find very entertaining. I want to say it was also due to the fact that the New Gods don't really have a culture per-say. On New Genesis, everyone is allowed to do whatever they want so long as it doesn't greatly harm others. On Apocalypse, everyone does what Darkseid tells them to do, or else. They don't really have cultures the way humans do.

As a result, a lot of New Gods find Earth's cultures and fashions endlessly interesting, and frequently model themselves after points in Earth's timeline that they like. Kanto dresses like something out of Shakespear because he loves the wordplay, style, drama and the like. Virman Vundabar modeled himself after the Nazi's because he liked their style of military, their tactics and their ability to inspire fear. And Stompa dresses like a World War II bomber pilot because she views said bombers as somewhat kindred spirit. After all, she sees herself as someone looking down at everyone else and dropping destruction on those below her, just swap out "bombs" for "her feet".
"My heart is as light as a child's, a feeling I'd nearly forgotten. And by helping those in need, I will be able to keep that feeling alive."

Probably not; I think it's a big from the comics version, which often looks like she's just wearing brass knuckles in some pics. If I cared about the New Gods at all, I'd probably have checked more carefully :).

-Lashina is the leader of the Female Furies, despite having one of the odder power-sets (Whips are generally the purview of cat burglars & other villainesses, not hunter/assassins). She's still a deadly warrior, and has by far the most showings of all the Furies (since she was briefly used in Suicide Squad), but even then she doesn't have much of a personality, being known mainly for her feud with Bernadeth. Her costume's kind of notable and recognizable, but not very good. The whole "covering the nose with a bar" thing makes her look like a Major Leagues Catcher. Oddly, in the DCAU, she was hooked up with Superman when he was hypnotized into working for Darkseid, and Batman Beyond would have revealed the evil SON of those two had that show continued to a fourth season (can you imagine? A New God/Kryptonian Hybrid with Granny's training?). So that's something.

-One of the more combat-savvy Furies, Lashina is physically much the same as the others, but with the versatile nature of the Whip boosted with extra Striking power & Penetrating slashes. Like most of the team, she's kinda one-note, but it's a pretty good note.

About the Performer: Diane Michelle is a former voice of Daisy Duck (now voiced by Tress MacNeille). Her Wikipedia page indicates that she is a "fine painter" (translation: She or a fan wrote the page).

In pretty much any incarnation Lashina seemed to have a thing for the good guys. In The Brave and the Bold she was paired with Johan Hex and in some versions it was implied that she had feelings for Scott Free.

-Granny Goodness is another case of the amazing quality of the "JLU" series. It took one of the WORST Jack Kirby creations, an old lady in blue armour, and turned her into the true Nightmare Fuel she was supposed to be, just by having her voiced by gruff-sounding MALE actor Ed "Lou Grant/Hudson the Gargoyle" Asner. All that creepy, semi-feminine Granny dialogue coming from THAT voice? Ugh. I know more than one person who's claimed they thought Granny was a horrible character until hearing "her" speak for the first time in the cartoon.

-Granny isn't nearly as capable physically as her Furies or Big Barda, being more of a behind-the-scenes manipulator in her giant Orphanage building (ie. GMs: Make this a campaign adventure/Dungeon Crawl. Those can be great with super-heroes just as much as they can be with D&D Fantasy heroes). So she has a ton of Benefits, Minions & Equipment (just stat up whatever you want), and is designed mainly to break people's spirits with her horrific traps & devices. A fight against Granny Goodness is probably the closest thing you'll get in a super-hero game to your typical D&D adventure, being a Dungeon Hack with tons of traps for you Rogue-types to find their way out of.

About the Performer: Kalibak is played by Michael Dorn, who is by far most famous for his role as Worf on various "Star Trek" shows. The gruff, bad-ass Klingon-in-the-Federation was a major character in the franchise, which is good, as it was the era in which if you played a role in Sci-Fi... you were a "Sci-Fi Actor". Period. Dorn still has appeared in so little stuff I don't even know what he actually looks like. Most of his other big roles are in Voice Acting, often as "Stunt-Casting" of a sort (like as Rufus 3000 in a "Kim Possible" movie)- one of the more notable ones was Coldstone in "Gargoyles".
kind of funny that two of Dorn's roles are guys that are supposed to be total badasses who always get their asses kicked (at least Worf had DS9)

-Okay, as everyone knows, I hate the New Gods. As much as Jack Kirby created them and we should all respect and love the man's work, I just can't get past these goofily-named, idiotic-looking super-powered types and their silly stories. Hell, even Kirby's own BIOGRAPHER (in Tales to Astonish) basically admits that at the time, everyone thought the books needed tons of work & editors, and that Kirby needed someone else writing his fairly good ideas. But guys like "Glorious Godfrey" & "Wundabarr" and stuff? Just not working. Take Orion here. A solid concept of the heroic son of a master villain, given issues with daddy & anger, and all good stuff. But then they give him blue undies, a plain red outfit, a stupid mask, and what looks like a sex-play-armature to fly around in. He just looks ridiculous. The character was used pretty well, if VERY sparingly, on JLU, being the grumpy, constantly-annoyed guy who can't stand The Flash's amateurish antics when he fights his Rogues. And he gets his butt kicked by Darkseid to Superman can save the day. So I guess he wasn't bad in JLU, but man, I can never get into the New Gods stories. Everyone looks and dresses like an idiot, their names stand out as bad even compared to the Image Era of Comic Book Names, and most of them are ridiculously bland.

-A PL 12 Powerhouse, Orion is more powerful than almost anybody else in the League barring the Big Seven. He costs a ton of points, has a butt-load of powers, and is very hard to injure or otherwise beat. But he's got limits. He's PL 11.5 unarmed (and he almost always fights unarmed), and his Astro-Force attack is a +12 Area Effect or a PL 12 Blast, but it's Distracting (that's why he doesn't do it so much- he's got this full-body harness he's locked in with both hands setting it off). His Mother Box is quite useful (especially the teleportation technology in it), but it's the TV version, so it's not quite a whole 'nother character (so no Minion) doing all sorts of stuff- it's just a powerful Cosmic Garage Door Opener, with a very limited Teleport (ie. it has HELLA-Range, but can't really be used in a battlefield context, as it takes forever to open up, only goes long range, and you've got to be Distracted to use it) and a few Equipment-based tricks. So Orion's a big, tough powerhouse who can nearly match Superman, but he's got enough limitations to make him clearly the lesser-man's version.

About the Performer: Orion is voiced with "I never have fun with anything, ever" aplomb by Ron Perlman, whom I've outlined before. He did a good job with it, making Orion just as boring and uninteresting as he is in the comics.

Weirdly enough Ron Perlman also voiced Stryker in the Mortal Kombat cartoon, making him a rather "soldier-like" type, which is..kinda odd considering he's a cop.

-Darkseid's always had a big role in the DCU since he debuted. Since that world has always lacked ultra-tough villains (most of it's guys were either crazy Bat-foes or Lex Luthor-type mad scientists), the big guy from Apokolips was eventually shoved into the role of "Big Bad", since he was one of the few who was a thinker AND could match Superman one-on-one in a fight. Plus, Jack Kirby's whole "Fourth World" storyline was an economic failure that got cancelled, and Kirby was very much on the "outs" with comic fans at the time (true story: Jim Shooter even mentions that "The King" was considered hopelessly old-fashioned and irrelevant in the '70s & '80s). Not bad for a guy that wears a mini-skirt and hip-boots.

-Unfortunately, as tends to happen, he started jobbing more and more to guys, eventually being fully downgraded (to almost past his Marvel equivalent, Thanos, and countless other good Marvel villains, as that company tends to protect their bad guys and make them seem like a big deal more often). He even got his Omega Effect deflected by ANARKY'S BULLETPROOF VEST. He keeps being brought back, however, as the one villain who can REALLY stomp Superman in a fight. Unless Superman tries harder (which he is often wont to do).

-Darkseid was REALLY well done in the various DCAU shows, however. Michael Ironside gave him a very strong, calm demeanor, meaning he was frightening without screaming or being over the top. It lent some grandeur to the character, which was backed up by how physically POTENT he was, often striking down even the Man of Steel, or taunting him by killing someone like Dan Turpin. He only got BETTER on JLU, with some extra cruel barbs here and there, a HUGE fight with Superman that wrecked his ship (featuring Superman using his Heat Vision THROUGH DARKSEID'S FOOT!), and more. I still remember the way he turns to his Apokoliptian hordes and calmly says "Earth will die SCREAMING...".

-Darkseid's another maxi-heavyweight, capable of beating Superman or anybody else in the League who opposes him. +15 damage in melee, and +16 with the Omega Beams (which have five ranks of Homing, meaning they can follow you around corners, or he can shoot AWAY from you and still hit; as well as four ranks of Improved Critical AND are Penetrating), as well as being nearly impossible to injure, and you've got a dangerous villain. Even without piloting massive warships with hundreds of minions. Note that the JLU version does away with all that superfluous crap (Magic powers, etc.), while still leaving him a horrendous foe. He's enough to have the advantage over Superman, requiring Hero Points or REALLY good luck to win.

About the Performer: Michael Ironside's deep, gruff voice makes him ideal to playl villains, and he's done a lot of animated work along that front, most prominently with Darkseid. He got his start as a star in the "V" series in the 1980s. He was also in "Top Gun", "Total Recall" and other '80s films. The '80s seems to be his career peak, as he was basically "The last captain on SeaQuest before it was cancelled" after that.

Justice League Unlimited

Post by Jabroniville »

Justice League/ Justice League Unlimited-

What could possibly be said about one of the best cartoons ever? Hell, the very fact that after such a surefire Jump the Shark moment (increasing the regular cast by about 70 people), the show actually IMPROVED, should earn its place in history. The show got off to kind of a rocky start, being GOOD, but not GREAT, for the first season or so... and then they suddenly kicked into the highest gear imaginable in the second season, pulling out the classic alternate-Justice League episodes and the World War II series. Then we got "Starcrossed: The Movie", which I'd honestly consider the greatest three-episode run in television history, comparing with the best The Sopranos and the other gods of TV could offer. Then we meld into a series of increasingly-epic encounters with the government, non-good and evil confrontations (the show goes to great pains to establish just WHY people would be afraid of the League), capitalizing in Flash actually pulling his weight for once and saving the day in one of TV's better payoffs.

But let's slow down and just look at some of the awesomeness... The Justice Lords arc, for starters. Not only do we get SEVERAL kick-ass fights and 'new' character designs, but we get one of those spine-tingling "THIS is Batman" moments that we got in the Batman: TAS years, when both his Lord version confronts him with the fact that in their totalitarian world "No eight-year old boy will ever lose his parents because some PUNK had a GUN!", and he later responded with "Mom and dad... they'd be SO proud of you" with the kind of cynical bastardly twist that only Kevin Conroy could provide with his awesome Batman voice (he's actually captured the character better than any 'face' actor ever could). Scenes like that, plus Lord Superman murdering President Luthor in cold-blood and the reactions of those around him (this show constantly proves that you can be alarmingly adult and forceful without actually SHOWING the gore. Merely a mention is all you need to paint a worse picture than you could actually pull off showing), MAKE this show. Then we get "Starcrossed". Complete with the great identity reveal (Wonder Woman touselling Flash's hair and saying it suits him was great), the LONG Superman payoff (he's wiped from the Kryptonite for half the movie), Wonder Woman annihilating half the Thanagarians by herself, Batman's classic "Gentlemen... it's been an honor" as he attempts to sacrifice himself to stop the hawks once and for all, John Stewart & Hro Talak's big final melee battle, Hawkgirl's face reveal (never has one female character gone from "who the hell cares' to 'WOAH! Someone just moved up a babe-level on the show!" with so small a moment), and all the great fighting in between, this is one of the greatest things I've ever seen, and I could personally watch it once a week and never get really tired of it.

And then the show actually KEPT UP that level of greatness (well, not fully, but they failed to suck from then on, which by sheer comparison, was hard) with the new legion of heroes running the joint. Classically sarcastic Green Arrow, innocent Supergirl (with of course, the Power Girl-esque slutty bruiser Galatea as her mirror), violent Huntress, sultry Black Canary, and of course, The Question, arguably one of the greatest character resurrections to something cool in comics history. Pulling every Rorscach-like quote they could use in a G-rated show, along with some gut-bustingly hilarious reaction shots and lines from him and the others around him, they made an upowered, not-even-that-great-a-fighter character into one of the best on the entire show. I mean, come on, who didn't laugh their ass off when he said, under torture, "topically applied fluoride doesn't help fight tooth decay. It does, however, make teeth visible to spy sattelite."? The whole Cadmus thing, the conspiracy, the AWESOME Superman/Captain Marvel brawl (seriously, how does the show top itself with over-the-top violence so often? I would've thought Superman blowing two eyeholes through Darkseid's foot woul've earned biggest "OOOOOOHHH" moment, but NOOOOO), Luthor's lines, the Brainiac reveal, all ending in Flash finally doing something after sitting out all season (which I sense was deliberate), doing one of the biggest power nerd feats in all of comics or cartoons, saving the day, but not before the entire team was forced to fight their demons in the form of the Justice Lords once again.

The last season wasn't as great as the first, but was still very good television. Lex Luthor, Gorilla Grodd, and a legion of mostly-terrible losers (DC REALLY falters behind Marvel when it comes to good, iconic villains) come up with varying plans to destroy the League and take over the world, culminating with Darkseid's big surprise return.

-Vandal Savage is one of DC's Big Bads who never quite pulls off the REALLY big events; he's considered as dangerous as Lex Luthor in many respects, but always falls a bit short. In the cartoon, he got introduced as a Nazi leader (replacing Hitler with his super-tech), and turned up years later in the present time, revealing his immortality for all to see. A really effective villain who was limited to a few arcs, he was a scary, manipulative bastard who always had some kind of plan. The League barely stopped him several times, and it was revealed that without Superman, he actually KILLED the entire League, necessitating Superman changing history. Not bad for a guy that was "less than Luthor".

-Savage isn't a combat machine by any means- he lacks the high tech or the Advantages for it, unlike his comic book version, who is an elite physical fighter beyond most humans. Instead, he relies on his high tech, genius & inventions, along with tons of minions to do his dirty work for him, always assuming in the end that his Healing will take over anything else. And yeah, it's a REALLY good Regeneration effect, basically with True Res (ie. he doesn't need blood or sunlight or anything to rise from the dead near-instantly) and an ability to recover from just about anything in a couple minutes' time (the Space-borne RAIL GUN made a direct hit on his base while he was in it, and he just came out all twisted and gross). His genius is at high levels, basically being sub Mr. Fantastic & Lex Luthor in his laboratory, and he has a lot of the "Ageless Guy" abilities to allow him nearly any skill he needs at any given moment.

About the Performer: Hahahaahahahaha OMG, Vandal Savage was played by JACKIE CHILES? Yes, Phil Morris was the brilliant parody of Johnny Cochrane on "Seinfeld"- the perfect symbol of fraudulent, amoral, bizarrely-charismatic lawyers ever. He played a variety of voice acting roles in the '90s, such as Dr. Sweet in "Atlantis: The Lost Empire" and later, Doc Saturday on "The Secret Saturdays"- basically, a lot of "Black Guy" roles that didn't go to Phil LaMarr. He was the Martian Manhunter on "Smallville". His most interesting job, to me, was playing Thurgood on "The P.J.s"... because sometimes Eddie Murphy just didn't feel like showing up, so Phil would do his lines just in case Eddie never came back to record them.

I wasn't aware the movie was written by G.R.R Martin.

I'm curious if you'll stat the Justice Guild, the Justice Society stand ins (because they weren't allowed to use the JSA at the time) from the Justice League two-parter "Legends".
