-Ultimately, Reinhardt is a PL 9 Melee Fighter with PL 8 Area Attacks (even his "Ultimate" does minor damage and packs a Stun onto it), PL 8.5 to Parry, and PL 10 to Dodge... and only attacks to the front. So don't see the "PL 10" status and think he's a god of war- that only extends to blocking Blasts. He's a godsend to his fleshy, spongy teammates, though (they even get a +1 boost to the Force Field that Reinhardt himself doesn't).
There's one relevant element: Reinhardt is one of the few fighter that can hit multiple opponents in melee because his swing cover his entire frontal arc instead of a "human-sized" spot in front of him. He's might not be that good against single agile opponents, but he can wreck minions like nobody else.

I love just about everything about Reinhardt. His bombastic personality, his look (power armored knight!), his humorous interactions/voice lines, and his desire to protect everyone. He's just fantastic all around.

I'm curious Jab, went Create for Winston's barrier, but Force Field for Reinhardt's any reason? Going with Create doesn't cause the same PL headaches.

Torby's amazingly beautiful daughter, Brigitte.
If the "Overwatch Waifu" choices had included side characters then Brigitte would have been barely a hair's breadth from Mei to me.

Something about Brigitte that may interest you Jab. In the Honor and Glory short Brigitte comes up to Reinhardt's shoulder, since Reinhardt is 7'4 that would put Brigitte in the well over 6ft height range.

One of the more amusing things about Reinhardt, this is his VA

Image

He tells the story of how he came up with the voice. He took his German/Russian father's voice and tweaked it more and more into the boisterous bruiser.

In a recent interview, he also made an intriguing suggestion- that Reinhardt is Don Quixote... and then didn't follow up on it.

Also Jeff Kaplan mentioned Don Quixote as one of Reinhardt's inspirations.

Despite being an old-school member of the team, and the most iconic Tank of the game, I saved Reinhardt for last from that group. His Toughness couldn't really be determined until I'd figured out everyone else.

Initiative +3

Defenses:
Dodge +8 (DC 18), Parry +8 (DC 18), Toughness +5, Fortitude --, Will +10

Complications:
Prejudice (Omnic)- Omnics are hated and mistrusted over much of the world, after the Omnica Corporation's robots attempted a global takeover. Many countries give them no rights at all.
Motivation (Spiritual Enlightenment)- Zenyatta believes that the way to repair the relationship between humans and omnics was not through dogmatic teaching, but by making personal connections with others.
Prejudice (Omnic)- Omnics face percecution almost everywhere they go, with many being stripped of their rights.
Relationship (Genji)- Zenyatta helped the damaged ninja come to terms with his cybernetics, and considers Genji his prized pupil.

Total: Abilities: 42 / Skills: 44--22 / Advantages: 8 / Powers: 104 / Defenses: 13 (189)

-One of the neater character concepts of the setting is Zenyatta, a robitic MONK that really goes to town against the usual "Robot Stereotypes"- he's not just ripping off The Vision and countless other Robots Who Wish To Be Human- this is a guy who thinks that Robots ARE a kind of life, and tries to attain peace within himself and with the universe.

-Zenyatta is a curious ball of stats, being smarter than your usual Kill-O-Bot, and deadlier than your usual Healer. His Orbs give him MULTIPLE options in combat- one being a standard (but rather powerful) Blast (with a Flawed Multiattack, sort of like Mega Man's "Charged Buster" shot). The Orb of Discord actually temporarily reduces the TOUGHNESS of your opponents, but not in the "permanent drain" kind of way- more of it makes them temporarily able to take more damage from any incoming shots- like the "Bruised" condition but on a greater scale. It will drop as soon as he tries it against another target. Similarly, his Orb of Harmony will gift allies with Regeneration. Both of these Orbs will drop when the target is out of line of sight, BUT... he can keep them activated while doing other things, meaning they're both Sustained Powers! So long as he can do an action, he can keep these active simultaneously!

-Zenyatta's "Ultimate", the Transcendence, makes him immune to harm (was gonna add Protection, then realized that it's literally Insubstantial at work here) and healing his allies with tremendous power. Zenyatta has struggled to "find a place" in the games, being a weak Healer with low mobility and only okay-ish damage- he also has to work hard making sure which Orbs are doing what. The designers actually changed his BASE HEALTH, which is a true rarity (only he and D.Va have received such boosts in "patches" to the game). His Toughness isn't bad, but he's not very defensive, and can't even heal himself naturally, meaning he's only PL 6.5 defensively.

Comic Book-izing Zenyatta: The Sustained Duration stuff would probably go away, instead replaced by a series of different Afflicting Orbs, like Mind Blasts and stuff. He'd probably be a full-on Telepathic/Telekinetic Robot, with a Force Field and stuff.

Reinhardt's Barrier is a literal, flat Force Field (even being Selective in what it lets in or out!), while Winston's is like a physical object, capable of providing cover to all. Not sure precisely, since I don't play the game, but it seemed easier that way.

Defenses:

Complications:
Power Loss (Ammo)- All ammunition has the potential to run out, and must be recharged.
Motivation ("Only Through Conflict Do We Evolve")- Doomfist's credo is that humanity thrives only in times of war, for this is where you build and determine strength. He wishes to foment war and chaos, thus empowering people to improve.
Enemy (Overwatch)- Doomfist was imprisoned by Overwatch, and now craves revenge.
Weakness (Best Counters)- Doomfist is weak against Roadhog (who can absorb the damage from his combos and counter effectively) and Bastion (who cannot be moved in Sentry Mode).
Enemy (Winston)- Winston defeated the proud Doomfist in melee combat many years ago. The Talon leader still holds a grudge.

Total: Abilities: 84 / Skills: 54--27 / Advantages: 24 / Powers: 23 / Defenses: 11 (169)

-Doomfist initially began as nothing more than a name- Overwatch designer Chris Metzen threw the terrible name out there as a possible "villain name". The gauntlet appeared from time to time in backstories, leading to the promise of an eventual in-game character- the creators decided to make it a generational title, like comic book superheroes. Doomfist was built with a "Fighting Game Character" design in mind, and given a powerful, pneumatic gauntlet as a weapon. Fans petitioned to have Terry Crews (notable for his insane Old Spice commercials, which consist of a lot of screaming) voice him, but this did not happen.

-Doomfist was an African martial arts master who lost an arm following the Omnic Crisis- failing to fill the void with his business acumen, he was hired by the second Doomfist (The Scourge of Numbani), becoming a mercenary in the service of Talon, a terrorist organization. However, the boss lacked the drive or ambition necessary to move beyond simply "profit from raids", and so Agundimu killed him, taking his place as the third "Doomfist". He then led the organization, and took it to new heights- however, he was eventually taken in by Overwatch, having lost a melee battle to Winston.

-After many years in prison, and the disbanding and reforming of Overwatch, Doomfist was finally sprung by Talon operatives, then, allied with Sombra, Widowmaker and Reaper, took control of the organization once more, slaughtering his rivals. Now, he moves towards revenge against Overwatch...

-Doomfist is a close-in fighter, unlike, well, everyone else in the game. This means that he specializes in getting into melee combat, then smashing the crap out of people there. Sounds slightly less-scary in a FIRST-PERSON SHOOTER, but keep in mind everyone else in the game is keyed towards Dodge more than Parry, meaning a PL 10 Melee Fighter is actually extremely devastating to them, provided he gets in close. The Rising Uppercut is akin to Ken & Ryu's Dragon Punches, and the Rocket Punch is an insta-kill to many characters in the game. And then he has a couple of Area Attacks to really close the deal. Generally, he's best combo-ing these abilities, stringing them together and using Rocket Punch to affect an escape, as even he can't take too many shots.

-Doomfist was initially TOO good in early play, as he could wipe out most heroes very quickly, and travel rapidly around the map (using his Special Moves as "Leaping/Dashing" tactics)- the developers quickly nerfed him (Rocket Punch carries you half its former distance), which of course dropped play of the character REALLY QUICKLY, too.

Comic Book-izing Doomfist: With that name, he'd be a Joke Character rather than the serious villain we're supposed to take him to be. The "Street Fighter Lite" powers would likely be upgraded in scope, and he'd lack a Force Field.

Overwatch PLs

Post by Jabroniville » Sat Jan 20, 2018 6:54 am

And that's it for Overwatch builds! That was a fun, interesting set to do. Researching it was a bit tricky, as Wiki sites don't contain a lot of "Fan in-jokes" or introspective stuff, so I was unfamiliar with a lot of the characters' EXACT personalities. This is one of those times where I could only BARELY do three builds per day- it's much more work than a comic book character with whom I'm already familiar.

I'm glad people enjoyed it, and it got people talking, though! It's one of those times I wondered if posting 2/day instead of 3/day would have been best, but some characters just don't provoke as much discussion :).

Overwatch Power Levels:
Looking at Overwatch PLs is an interesting thing. For one thing, I actually stat them up HIGHER than most others are doing, which is definitely unusual (though perhaps this is no longer true, I once had the reputation for being "that guy who low-balls everyone"). Maybe it's just because I see them as semi-comparable to Marvel super-heroes. Plus, they fight Kill-O-Bots ALL THE TIME, and treat armed soldiers like true Cannon Fodder, which is a bit higher than PL 7-8s can pull off. Reaper once solo'd a guy in a HUGE Mech Suit in one of the shorts, too.

However, I definitely make them all SITUATIONAL guys in terms of PL. Nobody in the game is a full PL 10, and many can only reach that with certain "buffs". Eight characters are PL 9 defensively, and ELEVEN are only PL 8. Six are even lower- only PL 7 to dodge! So a PL 10 Marvel Hero would actually house most of these people. Even the "Armor Guy", Reinhardt, is pretty low-grade.

Taken as a whole, they stat up like:

PL 6- Offense: Zarya (Without Charging)
PL 7- Offense: Mercy; Defense: Widowmaker (defense), Bastion (Recon Form), Orisa (Non-Fortified), Mercy, Junkrat, Zenyatta
PL 8- Offense: Bastion (Recon Form), Moira, Winston (Blasting), D.Va, Sombra (Blasting); Defense: Bastion (Sentry Form), Orisa (Fortified), Zarya (Non-Barrier), Symmetra, Torbjörn, Mei, Pharah, Moira, Ana Amari, Reinhardt (No Barrier), Sombra
PL 9- Offense: Bastion (Tank Form), Tracer, Orisa, Lúcio, Winston (Raging), Symmetra, Torbjörn, Junkrat, Roadhog (Standard), Mei, Pharah, Genji (Standard), Hanzo (Standard), Ana Amari, Reinhardt, Zenyatta; Defense: Bastion (Tank Form), Soldier: 76, Tracer, Lúcio, McCree, D.Va (Non-Matrix), Reaper, Doomfist
PL 10- Offense: Widowmaker, Bastion (Sentry Form), Zarya (Fully-Charged), McCree, Roadhog (Raging), Reaper, Sombra (Hacking), Genji (Dragonblade), Hanzo (Dragonstrike); Defenses: Winston, Zarya (Barrier), D.Va (Defense Matrix), Roadhog, Genji, Hanzo, Reinhardt (Barrier Field)
PL 11- Offense: Orisa (Supercharged)

Widowmaker: PL 10 Sniper, PL 6.5 Defenses.
Bastion (Recon Form): PL 8 Blaster, PL 6.5 Defenses
Bastion (Tank Form): PL 9 Blaster, PL 9 Defenses
Bastion (Sentry Form): PL 10 Blaster, PL 8 Defenses
Soldier: 76: PL 9 Blaster, PL 8.5 Defenses
Orisa: PL 9 Blaster, PL 10.5 Supercharger, PL 7.5 Defenses (PL 6.5 Non-Fortified)
Tracer: PL 9 Blaster, PL 9 Defenses
Lúcio: PL 8.5 Blaster, PL 9 Defenses
Winston: PL 8 Melee, PL 9 Raging, PL 8 Blaster, PL 9 Defenses, PL 10 Raging Defenses
Zarya: PL 6 Uncharged, PL 10 Charged, PL 7.5 Defenses, PL 9.5 Barrier
McCree: PL 10 Blaster, PL 8.5 Defenses
Symmetra: PL 8-9 Blaster, PL 7.5 Defenses
D.Va: PL 8 Blaster, PL 8.5 Defenses, PL 10 Defense Matrix
Torbjörn: PL 9 Blaster, PL 8 Defenses
Mercy: PL 7 Blaster, PL 7 Defenses
Junkrat: PL 10 Blaster, PL 7 Defenses

Overwaifu

Post by Jabroniville » Sat Jan 20, 2018 7:00 am

And for the record, my "Overwaifu" Rankings are as such:
1) Zarya: So freaking big and strong, while still having some feminine touches. Good Zarya Fanart is AMAZING.
2) Mei: SO CUDDLY AND CHUBBY!!! Seriously, she's ridiculously cute, and I have a huge thing for curvy girls.
3) Parah: In any game without the two oddball-types up above, Pharah would be my girl. Fit, toned, dark-skinned and gorgeous. The whole "Serious Army Girl" personality is just icing on the cake.
4) Brigitte: Basically everything Zarya is, but in a younger, cuter package. How old is she, anyways? I don't want to be a weirdo when lusting after video game characters.
5) Mercy: Basically a "Perfect 10", to the point where she's almost TOO generically-pretty... but then she puts on that Witch Outfit and you're like "DROOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLL...".
6) Katya Volskaya: MILF. Very stoic, "sharp" appearance, with hella-style.
7) Symmetra: Has a lot of what Pharah has, but is less pretty. Rockin' body, though.
8) Young Ana: Kind of loses points for looking just like Pharah, if that makes any sense.
9) D.Va: Looks a bit young, but still cute.
10) Tracer: Cute, but I'm not really into the "pin-thin legs" look.
11) Sombra: Meh, kinda boring character design. The freaky nails are a dealbreaker, too.
12) Widowmaker: A bit too elongated and off-putting.
13) Old Ana: Doesn't really pack the "Susan Sarandon" punch of Hot Older Ladies.
14) Moira: I'm pretty sure she's actually not supposed to be attractive. SUPER-androgynous.

In game terms all the barriers (Reinhardt, Winston and Orisa) works more or less the same way: they're a large energy construct that allows your team to shot through, but shot enemy fire and have no effect on peopl walking through them. The big divider is how they're used. Reinhardt's barrier is latched to his arm and is the only moveable one. Winston's barrier is a full dome, but it's also weaker. Orisa's is tougher, but also provide only a half dome cover, but it's the only one that can be deployed over some distance.

Hm, I think I might leave them as-is, just because Reinhardt's thing is more of a direct shield (I nearly went with the ACTUAL M&M-style Shield with Enhanced Defenses, but felt it was... odd, since the thing operates like it has actual HP).

In the meantime, got lost in a YouTube spree.

Night Hood: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7W4QD4ez9I- I remember almost nothing about this show, aside from starring the original Lupin (I'd assumed it was related in some way to Lupin III since I was on an anime kick back then, and I was KINDA right...), but HOLY HELL that is still the best Cartoon Opening ever. Others could be more awesome, but not had this STYLE.

And also... Kidd Video. Probably the best single signifier of the 1980s: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWjgvYo9ahQ

Dino Builds

Post by Jabroniville » Sat Jan 20, 2018 6:55 pm

DINOSAUR & EXTINCT CREATURE BUILDS:
Similar to the Animal Builds, Dinosaurs will be "amped" up for what they'd likely be in a fictional campaign (especially a Superhero one), with a note about their "Normal" Power Level. Most Dinosaurs here will be a PL or two above the baseline for the species. This reflects how a single dinosaur or animal would be presented as a realistic challenge to a super-hero in the confines of a comic book (the biggest example I use is the Leopard meant to challenge Batman in the famous "Ra's Al-Ghul Debut" storyline- a Cat with PL 6 status wouldn't provide much opposition to Bruce, but "amped" a bit higher, and you've got a bit of a tricky fight on your hands). These Dinosaurs are therefore reflective of a good Minion or Sidekick, a Time Travel storyline, or just animals in a trap. Or, if you're in the Marvel Universe, a trip to the Savage Land. When bringing their PLs down to "normal" levels, just take down their Accuracy & Defenses until they make PL, and drop their Fort & Will Saves down a ways.

I'll do my best to add on theories about how they lived, what they ate, etc., but keep in mind that we know VERY little about Dinosaurs. A huge ton of what we DO "know" comes from conjecture, guesses based off of Same Stats As living today, and new things are constantly being learned. For example, they JUST figured out that Velociraptors had feathers, and they still don't know how many or what colour they'd be. How many other theropods have feathers? Nobody has a clue.

Add in the fact that modern Paleontology seems to be the art of just inventing new theories with iffy evidence, just so you can write a paper about them and get famous in the community off of it, and you have some problems. Not that paleontologists haven't ALWAYS been like this- some of them downright HATE each other, and send nasty papers back and forth, insulting the others' theories, well before modern times. This leads to the "T.rex is just a scavenger" theory, the "Ceratopsians' crests are actually connected by flesh to their back so they look humped and stupid" theory, etc. Plus, Pachycephalosaurs apparently don't ram heads into stuff (which is awesome), they just 'butt' their rivals in the flanks or something (which is lame). So a lot of this will be guessing, often towards a focus to what is coolest- because I'm not a Paleontologist, I'm just a dork :).

Additional Notes:
-This list will contain both the Dinosaurs of Saurischia (lizard-hipped) and Ornisthiscia (bird-hipped) varieties, as well as the Pterosaurs (winged reptiles) and all varieties of undersea reptiles (the ichthyosaurs, mosasaurs and plesiosaurs).

-Regarding "Dino-Sized" things: Determining the exact size of some of these creatures can be rather difficult for a couple reasons. #1) Most fossils are kinda piecemeal, and the worst ones are just a couple bones that sorta look like another dino, and Paleontologists have a habit of assuming that it's merely the other animal, scaled-up. #2) The tails. Thirty feet is impressive, but up to half of that can be tail for some creatures, and I really can't bestow a HUGE Growth rating onto something that's Horse-sized, plus a ten-foot tail. Generally speaking, I'll just be measuring the head and body- long necks and tails will just add the Reach Power Feat. The total Growth rating doesn't really change their final stats overly-much, since most Dinosaurs are fairly easy to compare against each other.
