-It's no surprise sometimes what makes some dinosaur species famous, and others not. First off, it helps to be a REALLY old name that was discovered in the late 1800s, because 100 years of pop culture has helped make you famous. An easily-pronouncable name is a must- none of that "Amphicoelias" or "Therizinosaurus" crap will do. Keep it simple. Pteranodon. Tyrannosaurus. Pachycephalosaurus is an exception, the rest are mainly simple. Being the largest of an accepted species type is a BIG help, as humans have always been obsessed with size. Triceratops, Pachycephalosaurus, etc., are all good examples there. An iconic appearance is the next big thing. Pteranodon is BY FAR the most famous pterosaur thanks to its iconic name and head-crest, which helps out since it's lacking a bit in the size department (being "only" 30 feet in terms of wingspan).

-Pteranodon's fame gives it some pretty out-there depictions in the media, to the point where you have to determine some of the logistics, here. Sadly, such a creature only weighs about 40-100 lbs. or so, and could IN NO WAY keep a human being mounted on it's back. It also couldn't pick one up and carry it somewhere, and likely didn't prey on many terrestrial creatures at all- it mainly hunted fish. One of the big flaws in "Jurassic Park III", realism-wise, was these guys flying around at advanced size and tossing humans about in predatory manner. I mean, that beak's not exactly designed for tearing chunks of meat off of things.

-As such, a more realistic Pteranodon is a "mere" PL 4 predator with some good fighting ability (not a man-killer, but I wouldn't want to be poked by one), but that's it.

-Y'know all that stuff I just said, about Pteranodons being misrepresented as flying, man-killing mount-capable creatures? Well here's THAT version- the cool one you saw the villains flying in "Dino-Riders". I mean, what's the point of Pteranodons in a campaign if you're not gonna use them as the most bad-ass mounts ever? They just look SO COOL~~!! It's got no Growth despite it's prodigious wingspan because it's body was no larger than a man's, but it's got some Reach. It can reach hella-far, but lacks the weigh or oomph of most creatures with such an impressive profile. Pteranodon here is a PL 5 flier (PL 5.5 with it's Will & Fort Saves), just strong enough to carry a human rider (400 lbs. of lifting power), and quite accurate, but still more limited than some animals.

-Ohhhhh god damn. Look at that picture with the size comparison. Imagine seeing something that big in real life. Stupid terrifying nature, QUIT SCARING ME! Of course, there's some disagreements over the actual size, but many claim that the Quetzalcoatlus has a wingspan of up to 36 feet by some estimates, and the similar Hatzegopteryx (pictured next to the man) is even LARGER at 40 feet, both of which are at the upper scale to how big a creature can actually get and still be able to fly. These are the true kings of the Pterosaurs, though they lack the fame of the easier-to-pronounce Pteranodon. For a campaign, these are the heavy-hitting, super-impressive fliers to use as mounts. Pteranodon (the "fiction version" anyways) would probably be easier logistically- they can fit into more spaces, and don't dwarf their riders as much, but this thing is just SO visually cool that you'd almost be remiss in not showing it.

-Iguanodon is famously the second dinosaur ever discovered & named, and of course, being discovered in the early 1800s, it was subject to ALL KINDS of debate and confusion before people figured out just what in the hell this giant-sized skeleton was supposed to be. You can imagine people with no concept of dinosaurs finding a giant reptilian beast with iguana-like teeth (hence the name), larger than any known reptile by a considerable ways, getting confused as hell. Early estimates had it as a carnivore (because WHAT ELSE would be reptilian and that big?), four-legged constantly, and built pretty much like a crocodile. Then someone figured out that it was mostly bipedal, but this led to the "tripod" stance like a modern Kangaroo, as that was the only animal known to science that was bipedal AND had a long tail. Paleontology in the 1800s was not what it is today- there was a steep learning curve.

-So Iguanodon is pretty well-known, but kind of unspectacular, having no famous relatives, or nearly as many appearances in pop culture (the "Dinosaur" Disney movie aside) as the similarly-built Hadrosaurs (with which it shares the "Ornithopods" label). It's got those crazy "Thumb Spikes", which are highly-powerful, but really don't add to it's punch very much (it's 32 feet long, and some have found that may be even longer- a couple spikey things on it's thumbs aren't going to ADD damage). Statistically, it about matches the smaller Hadrosaurs, minus the Speed (they apparently couldn't run very fast).

-Parasaurolophus is the most iconic member of his species, though one of the rarest (in terms of fossils found). It's distinctive appearance, with it's two-or-four-legged stance and it's long crest extending far past it's head, have helped it stand out over the more boring Saurolophus (a simple little prong crest), Lambeosaurus (a big wedge-thing), and other, crest-less members of the Hadrosaur group (including Prosaurolophus), despite being only mediocre in terms of overall size. Hadrosaurs in general were pretty dull for anyone but Paleontologists, who found their NUMEROUS fossils and semi-complete skeletons all over the place, leading to a ton of new discoveries and developments in dino-science. 

-Their relatively "impressive... but not TOO impressive" stature has allowed them the dubious distinction of being one of the most regularly-seen victims of dino-predators in pop culture. Generally, if a T-Rex is attacking & killing something, it's either the #2 most iconic dinosaur (Triceratops), or one of these. Especially if the victim doesn't put up much of a fight- these things are big, but a T-Rex would probably still come out on top. For a campaign, these are OBVIOUS "background" creatures- enough that a stampede is highly dangerous, but not an overwhelming threat for a group of PCs on average.

-Parasaurolophus and it's kin are PL 8- a LOT higher than most "prey species" in the animal kingdom (cows, wildebeest, zebras, etc. are all barely PL 5 maximum, and usually much lower), but still below the dinosaur titans. It's sheer size gives it +10 to Damage and +9 to Toughness, but it lacks accuracy beyond "it's so big that it almost can't help but hit you" status, so this "PC challenging" specimen is +6 to hit, just like a lot of relatively tiny dinosaurs. More "typical" members of the species are likely PL 6- less accurate, but just as strong. Most of the Hadrosaurs sit around this size-level, being 30-odd-foot super-herbivores who travel in herds. I was gonna make them PL 7, but then I realized that was lower than the much-less-hefty Giraffe, so that wasn't right.

-Saurolophus is the same as Edmontosaurus, but is more well-known. As a kid, I thought it was the "lame one", because the PARAsaurolophus looked the same, but clearly had the much cooler crest. Saurolophus just has this itty-bitty lil' crest, making it look much less impressive, despite being a bit bigger physically. Despite this, Saurolophus has more pop culture credo than its cooler cousin, lending its species to both Dino Riders (one of the lesser-known 2nd series dinos was a small dino with a very complicated and hard-to-find set of hardware) and The Land Before Time (whose iconic Comic Relief, the ever-plucky Ducky was one of the most popualr characters, yup yup YUP!).

-Of similar scale to Lambeosaurus is the Edmontosaurus & Anatotitan. The former is named after my hometown (alongside Edmontonia... Alberta has a LOT of dinosaur skeletons lying around Horseshoe Canyon, the Red Deer River & The Edmonton Formation- a half-dozen Ceratopsians including Styracosaurus, Monoclonius & Pachyrhinosaurus lie alongside Corythosaurus, Lambeosaurus and others), and for having one of the few dinosaur skin impressions (in "mummy" form), revealing it's skin to look all bumpy like a Gila Monster's.

-Amazingly, this bastard is even bigger than T-REX himself! Lambeosaurs (named after the great paleontologist Lawrence Lambe, who discovered TONS of new species in the early 1900s- including Styracosaurus, Monoclonius & Gorgosaurus) are the titans of the breed, though a few Chinese types are of similar or greater stature by a few feet or so. They're not too different from a Parasaurolophus aside from a little boost in mass and PL 8 status (thanks to boosted hitting power), but I like showing all the different breeds this time around. Note that most dinosaurs are a little worse on Defense than they are on Attack, just like my Animal builds- animals rarely dodge in real life, they just kinda go "Attackattackattack", with offense being their best defense. Large monsters like this are especially easy to hit, but are tough enough to shake it off, despite being a PL lower on Defense in general.

-Kentrosaurus is one of my favourite dinosaurs in terms of it's appearance, but it's a bit on the small side. All those spikes and plates and stuff... it just looks so COMIC-BOOKY, even moreso than Stegosaurus does. It produced one of my favourite-looking toys EVER, as well, the Kentrosaurus action figure for the "Dino Riders" line (which I've already statted). That toy made it seem equal to a Stegosaurus in size, when in reality it's basically a super-sized Horse with a long tail and spikes, but that's acceptable, since that toy was meant to oppose a Stegosaurus one. In reality, this is just a pretty small, PL 7 dinosaur with a bad-ass weapon and a Shield set-up for it's plates.

-Stegosaurus is the most well-known and largest member of its type, the Stegosaurids. Thirty feet long, carrying four massive spikes on the end of it's tail (so named for a Far Side comic strip where it's named for "it's discoverer, the late Thag Simmons"), huge dorsal plates along it's back (designed either for attracting mates, cooling down, or defense), and the wierdest variety of colours artists have given a dinosaur (it's tall, flat appearance apparently looks too much like a canvas to them, so they go NUTS with it's colouration), Stegosaurus is ultra-famous, and led to the stereotype that dinosaurs were dumb. It's brain (about the size of a dog's brain, not a walnut) is so small for it's body type that people assumed in MUST have been stupid, though in reality it was probably no dumber than any other kind of dinosaur.

-Stegosaurs are ideal dinosaurs for campaigns, as you don't need giant herds of them so small parties can deal with a few at a time, they're not overwhelmingly tough like the Sauropods or Ankylosaurs, they're faster than both of those as well, and yet they're still iconic enough that everyone goes "Oh balls, it's a Stegosaurus!" and tries to avoid the tail like nobody's business. At PL 9, Stegosaurus is a heavy-hitter, but not QUITE as elite as the monsters of the Dino-world. These Jurassic ass-kickers have some lethal weapons with a high Critical Threat range, and are quite big at 30 feet long, but not unstoppable.
