The one Silver Surfer issue had a pretty memorable look for Death, at least to Preteen Jab:

The dynamic between Eternity and Infinity would probably work better if you could sum them up as Eternity being the embodiment of "All That Is" and Infinity being the embodiment "All that Could Be". Eternity is basically "space" while Infinity is "time". Eternity is all of what is and was, Infinity is all of what could have been and what could potentially be.

For someone who is just a skeleton, Death's got an amazing rack.

-Infinity is another in what I consider a group of pretty meaningless, unnecessary Cosmic Beings in the Marvel Universe. The group they had before 1990 or so was FINE, and something like this is just overdoing it. I mean, what's the differents between Eternity and Infinity supposed to be? Also, she furthers that weird thing where all the male Cosmics are these big ugly guys or Cosmic Concepts, while all of the female ones are these smoking-hot uber-babes in skin-tight clothing.

-Infinity represents "The Totality of Space", while Eternity represents "Time"... except that's not how anybody but Mark Gruenwald played it. Eternity is just The Living Embodiment of the Universe in every other case. Infinity debuts by contacting and empowering Quasar to defeat Maelstrom, who seeks to destroy the universe on behalf of Oblivion. Infinity next appears in Infinity War, allying with Eternity to defeat the Infinity Gauntlet-wielding Magus. And, since Gruenwald died and nobody else seemed to care for the character, she utterly vanished- missing from JLA/Avengers, Avengers Infinity and any number of stories featuring Eternity, because of course SHE HAS NO POINT, as writers just use Eternity to represent "All That Is", and Infinity is thus superfluous. In fact, the character doesn't appear at all between the 1990s and modern times, where Jon Hickman has her killed by The Beyonders along with the rest of Marvel's Cosmic Beings leading up to Secret Wars, and Al Ewing later shows her as the representation of the universe BEFORE that story (ie. prior Marvel Continuity), while Eternity now represents the current incarnation of the universe.

-Stats-wise, she's yet another copy of my "Eternity" build, as there's no real difference between the concepts.
Infinty was on the door at the beginning of Guardians of the Galaxy, with the other main three.

-The Cosmic Cubes are a really good basic idea- the ultimate end-game of "Big Science" represented by Alien Empires or Earth's A.I.M., creating a scientific device that allows its wielder nigh-ultimate power, often at the cost of sanity or common sense. All-powerful and a plot device, but ultimately, as the CHARACTERS are the most important parts of every story, the characters become the means of undoing the threat. They've gotten a LOT of use over the years, after initially being just something seen in Captain America comics. They sort of act as the Ultimate Macguffin- an all-powerful device that nonetheless can be knocked out of your hand by anyone from Hawkeye to Aunt May, and ultimately somewhat fragile and prone to disappearing, as the wielders grow overconfident or mad with power. Reliably unreliable, I guess.

-The first Cosmic Cube seen in comics was created by Advanced Idea Mechanics, meant as a "wish-granting" machine, essentially. It was a plot device even then (a sliver being used to empower the Super-Adaptoid), drove its co-creator M.O.D.O.K. insane, and got snatched up by the Red Skull, who would repeatedly be tied to the Cubes. The Skull, now all-powerful (which is literally the most horrifying concept ever), got the patented "Marvel Treatment" by being defeated by his own personal flaws, as Captain America pretended to surrender and asked to be the Skull's slave. So amused and giddy at the prospect, the Skull didn't see the obvious lie, and Cap kncoked the Cube away and into the ocean. The Cube reappeared there years later (again the Skull would try to grab power), then showed up in the hands of Thanos in 1974. Thanos wills the Cube to make him a part of everything, thus in control of everything, and discards the "powerless" Cube- Captain Mar-Vell manages to shatter the Cube and restore the universe.

-It would pop up a few more times, usually getting involved at Project: Pegasus in Marvel Two-In-One, wherer Victorious would use it to create Jude the Entropic Man, and Wundarr would be turned into the Aquarian. Much later, it transformed into the sentient being called Kubik. It would be revealed at one point that the Cosmic Being known as the Shaper of Worlds was formed from the sentience of ANOTHER Cosmic Cube- one created by the Skrull Empire, which is why he was so insane and destructive (wiping out part of a galaxy). The Shaper would take Kubik as a student, and a sliver of this Cube would later empower first Freedom Ring, then Crusader.

-A SECOND Cube would be created in Super-Villain Team-Up in 1979, and the Hate-Monger attempted to transfer his mind into it, but the device failed- it never gained the full Cosmic Power necessary, thus trapping the Monger's mind for years. It did not gain powers for some time- by the time it did, it exploded. 1983 would reveal another wrinkle, preventing their frequent use- that the Cubes were evolving into sentient beings over time, and would often take on personalities inspired by past wielders at their wishes. Meanwhile, Kubik would reveal in a HUGE Retcon that Cosmically-Powerful beings The Beyonder and the Molecule Man were both actually fragments of incomplete Cubes! Combining, the two form the creature Kosmos, who becomes the pupil of Kubik.

-The Magus uses the powers of five Cubes to make duplicates of all of Marvel's heroes during The Infinity War, but is defeated when he grabs the Infinity Gauntlet, as his Reality Gem turns out to be a fake. The Goddess grabbed dozens of them in The Infinity Crusade, forging a great power-source out of them, and Jim Starlin would add that the Cubes actually tapped into the realm of The Beyonders in order to carry out the wishes of Cube wielders. A third Cube was created in a 1995 Avengers tale, but it was shattered by Captain America, slaying the Red Skull in the process. He later returned, with the Cube's powers internalized- Korvac, disguised as the Watcher, tricks Cap into killing the Skull at the exact right moment, then takes the power for himself. This empowered Korvac repeats time constantly, Cap disrupting his "perfect world" each time. Eventually, Cap convinces Korvac that he consistently fails because of his inherent humanity, and they return to the past, where Cap successfully vaporizes the Cube.

-A fourth Cube (made up of slivers of others) was created by the Red Skull in Ed Brubaker's Captain America run- Aleksander Lukin desires it, and has his agent, the Winter Soldier, execute the Skull... who uses the Cube's power to transfer himself into Lukin, where he becomes a threat for a while. Ultimately, Cap uses the power himself, reverting the Soldier back into his friend, Bucky Barnes. Another unnamed Cube is used by D'Spayre in an Avengers/Invaders crossover, as various people use it to manipulate time. The U.S. Government creates another Cube, but Thanos gets a hold of it before being beaten by the Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy. Later, Maria Hill and S.H.I.E.L.D. form the beign Kobik in order to brainwash super-villains into becoming mild-mannered civilians in the Pleasant Hill storyline.

-Cosmic Cubes are thus interesting things- a Deux Ex Machina that can allow ANY story to be done, but almost always cycling back to the personal flaws of the wielder. The fact that it's an Easily-Removable Device comes into play frequently, as the fallibility of whoever's using it is central to every plot. That said, the ass-pulling of powers can get grating, so it's wise not to use it EVERY TIME.

-Cosmic Cubes are tremendously powerful devices, and the Sentient Cubes are even tougher (because you can't just break it with a Shield or knock it out of a dude's hand)- The Shaper of Worlds' awakening blew up a crapload of the Skrull Galaxy. Cubes are "Limited" to a puny single galaxy in scope of power (their "Titanic Damage" attack will wipe out only a portion of that, but since they can Teleport anywhere in Space at-will, they can do a few rounds of that to blow up everything in a couple hours :)). These are among the only Cosmics that can create entire WORLDS- it might take a while, but they can slowly make a planet (making the people living there would take a metric ton of ranks in Summon, so I'll leave that out so as to not break the system).

I love the idea of Cosmic Cubes, but they seem to pop up just a bit too often for my taste. Creating one of those things should be a big deal unless there were some obvious side-effects to using them. I think Infinity War had the Magus comment that using the Cubes directly had some unpleasant side-effects, like you'd get cosmic radiation poisoning if you overused the Cubes power, which supposedly manifested as going insane even quicker.

I believe that the problem lays in the fact that the canonicity of Gaiman's Sandman (one of my favorite comics of all times) was dubious, to say the least, for a long time. Except for Destiny, the other Endless were never explicitly included into the main DC continuity, until the uber-popularity pushed some writers to add them to other stories. Unfortunately, this added a lot of problems, since the sphere of influence of the Endless overlapped with some existing characters and other writers kept adding their own, sometimes half-assed, interpretation of these same concepts (*cough* the Black Flash).
Personally, I loved Gaiman's interpretation of Death, but I never considered her really sexy at all. In my mind, imagining Death as this everyday and friendly character, who actually loves people and simply does her job, is a much more sane approach, rather than thinking of her as a cold and distant incarnation of a cosmic principle. I know this is just me, but I had my first brush with death when I was barely 7 (my maternal grandmother) and so I've grown used to the idea that death is always near.
"You're right. Sorry. Holy shit," I breathed, "heckhounds.”

-Kubik is the original Cosmic Cube created by A.I.M., and evolved in the 1980s. It was taken in as a student by the Shaper of Worlds, and later had its powers copied by the Super-Adaptoid, making it nearly all-powerful. He later hooked up with Kosmos.

Re: Jab’s Builds (Order & Chaos! In-Betweener! Eternity! Death!)

Post by Goldar »

I know an early issue of the Avengers showed the team going after Namor who got his hands on the Cosmic Cube. Namor mentally made it change into a Amulet. The Wasp figured out his new jewelry was really the CC, so she stung the chain, causing it to break and the Amulet fell into an ocean trench. Never to be seen or heard from again?? Which Cube was that?

The Less Sexy Death:
-Marvel's Death doesn't get as much cred as DC/Vertigo's version, but then comic book fans are dorks with pretentious tendencies, and so an artsy goth girl apeals to them more :).
I might be alone here, but I was never really taken with Gaiman's version of Death. There's an internet rumor (which I don't know if is true or not), but supposedly. Gaiman found out that a writer of Captain Atom had the idea of several cosmic beings represent different aspects of Death. The Black Racer was Death as the inevitable force chasing you throughout your life, That Which You Cannot Escape. Nekron was Death as the Enemy of Life, the death that breeds weakness into the healthy, that brings sadness and misery. Gaiman's Death was Death as the Friend, the one who ends your pain and walks with you to whatever comes after. Supposedly Gaiman hated the concept and felt that his version of Death embodied all aspects of Death in its totality and complexity . . . when I never really found her super complex, and thought the other concept fit better with a shared universe and existing archetypes.

I always found that extremely funny considering his little take on Narnia.

-Kosmos is the formed body of The Beyonder & The Molecule Man, both revealed to have the parts of a shattered Cube. She expels the Molecule Man from her body and returns him to Earth, then became Kubik's student and lover. Their Cosmic Booty-Calls must be EPIC. Naturally, as a female Cosmic Being, she's curvaceous and hot instead of weird and ugly like most of the others. At some point, Kosmos went insane and took mortal form, calling herself The Maker- amnesiac, she destroys a Shi'ar colony and is imprisoned by the Imperial Guard on the Kyln- an intergalactic super-prison. Her madness takes hold of several inmates, but she's beaten by Thanos, who convinces her to shut down her own mind. Her lifeless body is later seen. The Beyonder is later given a different origin story, making a lot of Kosmos suspect.

-The Shaper was created thousands of years ago by the Skrulls (I always thought it was weird that HUMANS had managed to make such a thing). His main problem is his appearance- which is a REALLY goofy mix of a White Skrull and a Purple Tank. The Shaper could only create & alter worlds with human imagination, because he had none of his own. It was initially unexplained when it debuted in the Hulk's book- 11 years later it was given an origin.

-The Shaper's gimmick was creating a "World" based off of the imagination of one person. The first, a Nazi world, was destroyed by the Hulk. One created from the mind of a mere henchman was destroyed by the Fantastic Four. He created a "Paradise World" for the Hulk out of guilt for harrassing him before, but it's ultimately destroyed as well. He takes Glorian on as a student at one point, but later attempts to teach Earth's Cosmic Cube, Kubik, explaining his own origins at the same time. His most recent appearance was again with Glorian, who was getting the Silver Surfer to help them rebuild the cosmos after Secret Wars.

Responsibility (Naive)- Kobik is naive, immaturer, and easily led. She even thinks that THE RED SKULL could be a good person.

Total: Abilities: 86 / Skills: 58--29 / Advantages: 17 / Powers: 663 / Defenses: 22 (817)

-Kobik is the most recent "Sentient Cosmic Cube", and was created by S.H.I.E.L.D. using fragments of various Cosmic Cubes. Because this could NOT POSSIBLY BACKFIRE, Maria Hill gets Kobik, who appears to be an innocent young girl, to brainwash several super-villains into becoming regular, upstanding members of society in a "community" called Pleasant Hill. Of course, the Cube fragments in her respond to the proximity of the Red Skull, who's used them before, and he manipulates her into thinking that Hydra is a noble organization. Due to this, she later contacts Steve Rogers, then an elderly man (requiring Sam "Falcon" Wilson to take up the mantle of Captain America), and rewrites history, making a young Cap a loyal agent of Hydra, having been a sleeper agent since childhood. This leads to the infamous "Hail Hydra" moment that starts off the new Steve-focused Captain America book, enraging fans the world over, presumably because nobody's ever read Captain America in their lives enough to realize that this was OBVIOUSLY the work of a Cosmic Cube.

-Hydra's "Secret Empire" spreads across the United States, but Kobik still retains the memory of the good Steve Rogers, who manages to convince Kobik the error of her ways. Together, they stop Hydra-Rogers from using his own internalized Cosmic Cube to gain total power. Real-Cap thus beats Hydra-Cap. However, the story arc, which seems great on paper, was marred by Marvel's heavy-handed "Identity Politics" tactics at the same time (which saw a huge swath of Marvel's top characters replaced by women or ethnic minorities simultaneously), and repeated attempts to shame fans who were upset over this.
