The Imperial Guard

Post by Jabroniville »

THE SHI'AR IMPERIAL GUARD:

-This group is kind of an assortment of nobodies and the most background-y of background characters (many of them exist solely as a name and a power-set)- a team of guys meant to be Dave Cockrum's "wink" to his old book, The Legion of Super-Heroes, with each member of the initial team having a direct representative on the Legion. It was pretty much a one-note joke, but as they were on the increasingly-popular X-Men book, they got a bit of notoriety, enough so that many later writers would use them every time their heroes went into space. Chris Claremont writing the Shi'ar as THE Space-faring Race above all others helped make them a bit more important as well.

The Guard first appeared as the powerful minions of Emperor D'Ken- the power-mad ruler of the Shi'ar. Many were simply recolors of LOSH characters (Hobgoblin is essentially the same as Chameleon Boy, but purple), while others were more clever (Manta, Gladiator). Eventually, they aid Lilandra, D'Ken's successor, and even get the credibility boost of DEFEATING the X-Men in the finale of The Dark Phoenix Saga, which sees them beating the X-team in some pretty fair contests. The Guard saw use in a few random stories, Gladiator most of all, seeing as how he was A) the leader, and B) another Supermanalogue, and you KNOW how much Marvel loves those. Operation: Galactic Storm also gave them a bit of a run.

If you want proof that Dave Cockrum is one of the greatest costume designers in comic book history, look no further than here- ignoring the copies, and you STILL have numerous cool designs and interesting looks. And for a HUGE squad of characters! Cockrum was basically designing the 1970s equivalent of a "Sketchpad Character" with some of these, and he absoltuely knocked it out of the park! I can only imagine that some of these were rejected Legionnaire designs or something.

One of the funniest things I notice about the Guardsmen is that their codenames are often RIDICULOUSLY cool- like Claremont & Cockrum basically just threw down the largest number of good super-codenames in history all at once. This results in both major companies copying the names for later characters a LOT, since these guys are so minor it feels like a waste to use Impulse, Hobgoblin, Onslaught (a Gruenwald guy) and more on them. There are other great names on this squad too: Warstar, Fang (another claw-guy needs to take that, unless they already have), Titan, Nightside, etc.

Most curiously, I rarely saw these guys trotted out as mere jobbers the way most background teams do in comics, particularly in the old days. Even in OGS, they were actually holding their own against The Avengers at points, before ultimately losing. The crossover, spearheaded by continuity-nerd and DC fan Mark Gruenwald, also included a few new members to reflect un-used LOSH characters like Karate Kid (Onslaught) and Matter-Eater Lad (Glom). They've had a couple Limited Series in the past decade, but also a large amoung of dead members, as writers started seeing many of these non-characters as disposable. Such is the life of a bottom-tier character- modern comics are likely to see a half-DOZEN of them go down fighting, only to be replaced by an identical-looking character with the same name (Status Quo is God, even for friggin' Smasher or Neutron).

Maximum Security saw four (Hussar, Warstar, Neutron, Webwing) go rogue and attack the X-Men, while Grant Morrison's X-Men saw Cassandra Nova take over several of them, wwhile Ethan Van Sciver used his detailed art style to depict a LOT of strange, new Body Horror-style characters on the team. The rise of Vulcan, the Third Summers Brother, sees many of the Guard slain in battle, as he takes over the Shi'ar Empire and engages in a brutal war against the Kree. Ultimately, he and Black Bolt disappear and are thought-dead, while Lilandra herself is killed, leaving Gladiator in charge of the Shi'ar Empire instead of merely being its most loyal soldier. Of the team, Gladiator is still the only one given much characterization, though Mentor and Oracle are often treated as "Field Leaders" of some importance.

I'll be statting up the entire team of recurring characters, as well as including a pair of Templates, one for one-shot or one-note members with little history, and one for the Shi'ar Death Commandos, a group of elite soldier-type guys.

Defenses:
Dodge +8 (DC 18), Parry +8 (DC 18), Toughness +3, Fortitude +5, Will +4

Complications:
Responsibility (The Shi'ar Imperial Guard)

Total: Abilities: 32 / Skills: 22--11 / Advantages: 7 / Powers: xx / Defenses: 13 (64)

-This fits those generic Background Guardsmen who show up from time-to-time. Various writers and artists throw in random faces that rarely show up again, given the huge roster of the team (and the fact that writers tend to bring the team back to it's founding roster as a default).

Arc- PL 9 (106): Bio-Electric Blast 10 (Feats: Accurate 2), Electric Aura 5 [42]
-A "New X-Men" introduced guy.
Chakar- PL 9 (104): Strength 5, Stamina 5, Fighting 10, Intelligence 2, Awareness 2, Presence 3, Expertise (Space Soldier) 8 (+10), "Shi'ar Senses" Senses 4 (Extended & Low-Light Vision, Extended Hearing, Acute Scent), Leaping 1 (15 feet), "Talons" Strength-Damage +1 [40]
-Chakar led Voltor, Binder & Kwill on a mission into Galador, where they were all killed by a treacherous ally.
Voltor- PL 8 (83): Bio-Electric Blast 8 (Feats: Accurate 2, Split) [19]
-A guy who showed up as a newbie Guardsman in "Rom: Spaceknight" and was killed by Pulsar.
Binder- PL 8 (82): Plasma Blast 8 (Feats: Accurate 2) [18]
-Voltor's partner, killed when a Shi'ar Dreadnought blew up.
Kwill- PL 8 (90): "Stun Quills" Affliction 8 (Fort; Impaired/Disabled/Unaware Senses) (Extras: Ranged, Cumulative) (Feats: Accurate 2) [26]
-Voltor's partner, also killed when a Shi'ar Dreadnought blew up.
Voltar- PL 8 (83): Bio-Electric Blast 8 (Feats: Accurate 2, Split) [19]
-Introduced to die in a single story (Realm of Kings). Obviously a replacement for Voltor.
K'tor- PL 6 (86): Strength 4, Stamina 4, Fighting 4, Intelligence 4, Awareness 3, Expertise (Politics) 4 (+8), "Shi'ar Senses" Senses 4 (Extended & Low-Light Vision, Extended Hearing, Acute Scent), Leaping 1 (15 feet), "Talons" Strength-Damage +1 [22]
-A generic Evil Bureaucrat.
Blackthorn- PL 8 (99): Stamina 7, "Plant Control" Snare 8, AE: Impede Movement 2, Protection 2 [35]
-A one-shotter Plant-Man from the early '80s who was there for a single story. He had a sword and shield at first, but it vanished by his second issue.
Moondancer- PL 6 (94): "Galactic Tracking" Senses 20 (Life Sense- Ranged 16, Tracking 2, Acute), Remote Vision 5 [30]
-Basically an obvious Dawnstar homage, right down to the buckskin outfit, this blue girl showed up in "Quasar" a few times and that's it.
Monstra- PL 9 (96): Strength 10, Stamina 10, Extra Limbs 2 [32]
-A wild, ugly alien punker (I hate punkers), Monstra fought The Beast for a bit.
Fader- PL 7 (71): Equipment 3 ("Spazgun"- Blast 6 Multiattack, Armour +2), Ranged Attack 4, Concealment 2 (Visuals) [7]
-Monstra's (apparent) boyfriend, who could hide in the Ultraviolet Spectrum. Of course, this didn't help him against The Beast's Super-Senses, and so he got beaned by a statue and was taken out of the fight.
Squorm- PL 6 (78): No Stamina, Immunity 30 (Fortitude Effects) [14]
-Squorm is so utterly useless in a fight that I find it's inclusion on the "Superguardians" weird. I mean, it's basically a bit liquid jelly thing that lost in seconds to an X-Man. Basically just there as a joke, I guess.
Schism- PL 6 (88): Summon Duplicate 5 (Extras: Heroic +2), Flight 2 [24]
-Like Squorm, Schism (a Duplicator- a white female half and black male half formed an androgynous character) was a useless fighter, simply having it's two heads bopped together by The Beast.
Mammoth- PL 9 (95): Strength 10, Stamina 10, Extra Limbs 1 "Trunk" [31]
-Lilandra's bodyguard, he was killed by Cassandra Nova.
Immundra- PL 9 (109): Strength 10, Stamina 10, Flight 6, Will +7 [45]
-Immundra has a bit of a "Cornfed Flying Brick" look to him (with Frank Quitely on art, he of course looks pudgy as hell and hideous), and was piloting the ship when Cassandra Nova killed him with a psionic assault. His higher Telepathic Resistance (higher Will Save) failed to help him.
White Noise- PL 9 (103): Strength 5, Stamina 5, "Sonic Scream" Dazzle 9 (Accurate 2), AE: Dazzle Cone 9, AE: Dazzle Area Perception 9, AE: Nullify Sonic Effects 9 (Extras: Ranged), "Shi'ar Senses" Senses 4 (Extended & Low-Light Vision, Extended Hearing, Acute Scent), Leaping 1 (15 feet), "Talons" Strength-Damage +1 [39]
-Possibly Deathbird's daughter, White Noise was a Sonic Screamer who only featured in one story, but has shown up in background scenes.
Black Light- PL 9 (101): Strength 5, Stamina 5, Black Blasts 9 (Accurate 2, Split), "Shi'ar Senses" Senses 4 (Extended & Low-Light Vision, Extended Hearing, Acute Scent), Leaping 1 (15 feet), "Talons" Strength-Damage +1 [37]
-White Noise's brother, who has the age-old "Generic Blaster Guy" power-set. They have a "Tomax & Xamot" thing that makes them feel the other's pain, which is a pretty bad weakness to have (you kick two asses for the price of one). Black Light was killed along with Neutron during the "War of Kings: Imperial Guard" mini-series.
Pn'zo- PL 10 (140): Strength 8, No Stamina, Protection 8, Extra Limbs 4, Snare 8, Ranged Attack 6, Electrical Aura 10 [76]
-Pn'zo is a bank-robbing criminal who is freed by Emperor Vulcan after swearing loyalty to him.
Neosaurus- PL 6 (84): Immortality 20 (one round) (Flaws: Requires Housing Bodies) [20]
-Neosaurus is actually a "magnificent artificial brain" that merely controls these turquoise reptilian creatures as housings for it's intelligence. It can presumably enter into other bodies, but we only ever saw one on-panel at once, and Wolverine EASILY killed it and stole it's Flight Patch, so they pretty well suck at fighting.
Blimp- PL 6 (66): Flight 2 (Flaws: Low Ceiling) [2]
-Blimp was basically a useless guy who got slashed by Wolverine and flew around the X-Mansion like a balloon. He had no offensive capabilities to speak of, and had Involuntary Transformation: Tears Open if Hit By Slashing Weapons.

Vehicles 2 (+7)

Advantages:
Benefit (Imperial Guard), Equipment 8 (Anti-Gravity Device, Blasters +6), Improved Aim, Improved Critical (Chosen Attack), Ranged Attack 5, Startle, Teamwork

Equipment:
"Blasters" Blast 6 (Extras: Multiattack) (18)

Offense:
Unarmed +7 (+2 Damage, DC 17)
Initiative +2

Defenses:
Dodge +10 (DC 20), Parry +10 (DC 20), Toughness +4, Fortitude +6, Will +5

Complications:
Responsibility (The Shi'ar Empire)

Total: Abilities: 58 / Skills: 36--18 / Advantages: 18 / Powers: xx / Defenses: 9 (103)

-The Death Commandos were created by Chris Claremont & Chris Bachalo to essentially be a "90s X-Villain team", ie. a bunch of random designs off of the artist's sketch pad that were abruptly given some kewl names and one-note powers and thrown out there to compete against the X-Men for a single story arc. They attacked Rachel Grey, killing off almost the entirety of the Grey family (yes, Marvel wanted Jean dead SO BAD that they wiped out her entire family, too).

Offset- PL 10 (124): Strength 6, Stamina 6, Fighting 12, Senses 3 (Acute & Extended Scent, Radius Sight), "Four Arms" Extra Limbs 2, "Mandibles" Strength-Damage +2, Equipment (Blades +2) [21]
-A Praying Mantis-looking chick who also used Blades.
Warshot- PL 10 (117): Fighting 12, Agility 6, Dexterity 7, Ranged Attack 7, Soldier 10 (+11) [15]
-Warshot is an elite Gunfighter/Soldier guy with an anime-esque helmet. He jobbed more than most of his buddies, being prone to having his bullets deflect off of stuff, then getting nailed from the side by another hero.
Flaw- PL 10 (150): Strength 8, Stamina 8, Morph 4 (Any Form), Concealment 1 (Detect True Shape), Shapeshift 1 [47]
-Flaw is a highly-powerful "Warskrull" with cybernetic ehancements, and has all the usual Skrull stuff on top of a powerful body.
Devo- PL 10 (133): Snare 10 (Flaws: Non-Cumulative) (Diminished Range -1) Linked to Blast 5 (D.Range -1) Linked to Weaken Toughness 10 (Extras: Ranged, Affects Objects) (D.Range -1), AE: Force Field 6 (Extras: Affects Others, Ranged) [58]
-Devo has a unique little ability which basically combines "Trapping Guys Inside of Energy" with "Flesh-Eating Gas", basically a big Linked Attack. Despite his cool powers, he has been easily thumped by a number of X-Men, thanks to his comparative defensive weaknesses (PL 7 Defensively).
Hypernova- PL 9 (147): Agility 6, Ranged Attack 3, Blast 9 Linked to Weaken Toughness 8 (Extras: Affects Objects, Ranged) [44]
-Hypernova is a standard Blaster who can also dissolve stuff (kinda like her teammate, actually). She's actually quite the lil' jobber, having no wins to her name. She's been beaten by Psylocke, Nightcrawler and more.
Shell- PL 10 (138): Strength 11, Fighting 8, Agility 0, No Stamina, Growth 6, Elongation 2, Protection 5 (Extras: Impervious 9), "Expel Rocks" Blast 10, AE: "Entrapment" Snare 10 (Flaws: Touch Range) [35]
-Your basic "Big Strong Rocky Dude", Shell could expel rocks just like Santo of the "Young X-Men".
Krait- PL 9 (125): Strength 7, Stamina 7, Fighting 11, "Wings" Flight 6 (120 mph) (Flaws: Winged) [22]
-An unspeaking bird-like alien with a cool name, but little feats in combat other than flying through a Sentinel's head once.

-Blackloak is the leader of the Death Commandos, and is generally pretty competent- these guys have a TON of Disintegration-based attacks, for some reason. What is this, the '90s all over again? Did I forget my neon shoelaces and backwards pants? This guy was a pretty awful person though, killing a lot of Rachel & Jean Grey's family members, but he got his in the end, being killed by one of Rachel's Telekinetic Bursts.

-SeGa does what Nintendon't. Actually, he's a gaseous being who chokes people, makes giant force fields a city block in radius, and sets the damn thing up to explode, which can apparently blow up everything for five miles. He can't be hurt by others, making him a REALLY cheesey character, but he's as vulnerable to telepathic attacks as any other guy with a +4 Will Save, and when you're fighting the X-Men, that's pretty bad.

-Astra's one of those rare Guardsmen that's actually SUPERIOR in combat to her Legion counterpart. Phantom Girl is JUST a "Phaser" archetype, entirely useful only in escaping things and spying on people. Astra, on the other hand, is full-on as powerful as Shadowcat or Vision in their phased states; able to mess with people by partially solidifying inside of them. That's the kind of benefit you get when you're a Marvel-based Phaser. She's reasonably skilled as she's been shown quite a bit, and is likely one of the smarter members of the Imperial Guard. I like the outfit, too- you don't see alot of women with the "Furry sleeves" costume choice, and the pigtails make her stand out.

-M'Nell here is actually a solid idea- since The Imperial Guard is comprised of the members of races within the Empire, and the Kree were conquered by the Shi'ar in "Operation: Galactic Storm", then a Kree should be on the Guard at some point. Initially just a Gun Guy, he gained super-powers from some Nega-Radiation thing, and earned his teammates' respect in the process. Of course, his debut in an Imperial Guard-based Mini-Series was his ONLY appearance until a couple years ago, making it a pretty big ten-plus year gap in appearances.

-Delphos is a VERY minor character, introduced in a 2000s-era Inhumans limited series as a would-be Imperial Guard member who finally gets allowed in. A riff on Dream Girl, she focuses on being a supreme military (almost uber-'90s in design) fighter, with laser rifles & stuff, to go along with her Precognitive powers. A pretty simple "Military" build with a 4-point power slapped on top of it. She's still one of the weakest Guardsmen (she's got GUNS and that's it), but her Skillmonkey qualities kinda make up for it. She's still very weak for the kind of stuff this group gets into, though, and her character hasn't reappeared in the comics since the Limited Series she came from. Like most "Later-Created" characters for a minor group, she has been forgotten.

We don't know anything about his origin? His ... genesis?

-Earthquake's actually pretty good. A geokinetic in an era that didn't have many of them, he KOed Storm once, and has generally more useful showings than 90% of the Imperial Guard whenever they show up. Also, he's one of their more visible members, being a big ugly rock dude. His build is a combo of Density and Earth Control, mainly being PL 9.5 on offense (his "Debris Blast" is PL 9.5) but for his powerful Trip. He's quite handy in a team fight, rather durable (though not beyond the likes of non-powered people to knock out cold), but lacks Advantages desperately. If he was more well-rounded, he'd be a terrific hand, but he's just a basic, limited team guy at this point. He was seemingly-killed by Vulcan.

I'm curious as to whether Earthquake is a "nudity is part of my culture" alien or a "I'm actualy just a nudist and you're idiots for believing me" alien.
Am I dead? Am I alive? The answer may surprise you!

Neither. He covers his brown rock like hide with a purple-grey full body stocking.

Ah, I see. So he's a pseudo-nudist.

-Electron is a frequently-seen Guardsman, being one of the clearly Shi'ar members, with a pretty decent generic power-set. He takes on a leaderly role in most stories that don't involve Gladiator (ie. ones that want to give the heroes a reasonable chance of victory), and seems pretty noble and good compared to many of the somewhat-aggressive members of his team. Unusual in that he takes more after Lightning Lad than Cosmic Boy (his Magnetic stuff usually just comes across as power stunts of his main power), even though there already IS a Lightning Lad-Expy on his team.
