That toy looks to be a customization of the Robots in Disguise Arcee, Deluxe Class 2012.
That’s because that’s what it is. It’s Arcee repainted to look like Batgirl. Which, well, how could I not love that?

Real Name: Unknown
Known Aliases: 'Tiger' Tanaka
Occupation: Head of Japanese Secret Service
Education: Unknown
Date of Birth: Unknown
Base of Operations: Tokyo, Japan
Height: 5'9" (1.75 m)
Weight: Unknown
Eyes: Brown
Hair: Black
Race: Human
Identity: Secret
Religion: Unknown
Relationships: Unknown
Legal Status: Citizen of Japan with no criminal record.

Background:
Tiger Tanaka is the head of the Japanese Secret Service and the deuteragonist of the Ian Fleming's 1964 novel You Only Live Twice as well ast the 1967 film adaptation.

Tiger Tanaka is the youthful, charismatic chief of the Japanese secret service who rarely makes public appearances. Tiger forged a strong relationship with James Bond while he was in Japan. His headquarters are inside an underground train that constantly travels around the Tokyo subway for his protection. He also operates a ninja training school in a castle in a remote area of Japan where he trains Bond in the art of Ninjitsu and teaches him to become a Japanese, marrying him to Kissy Suzuki.

Efficient and a follower of the latest technologies and trends, Tanaka is the perfect man to be heading the Japanese secret service. He is typically brisk with his staff but deeply respects loyalty. When not on duty, Tiger transforms into the warm, jovial and welcoming host that Bond grows to respect. He is determined to teach the British agent the ways of the Japanese men, culminating in having him pretend to marry one of his own agents as cover. In many ways, Tanaka is more than a match for 007, in terms of womanizing and drinking, but is skeptical about how much Bond smokes. Even though most of his job takes place behind a desk (or aboard his private underground train), Tanaka is still fit and fights with the best of them.

After being alerted of Bond's discovery of the volcano lair by Kissy Suzuki, Tanaka aids Bond in raiding and defeating Ernst Stavro Blofeld, head of SPECTRE, using a team of ninja agents to invade the villain's lair in an inactive volcano.

Build Notes:
Tiger Tanaka is cooler than you are, this is a scientific fact. Since 1967, dozens of scientists at the top universities in Asia, Europe, and North America have been researching the subject very carefully... There is some debate between specialists as to whether or not Tiger Tanaka is cooler than James Bond, but without a doubt, both Tiger Tanaka and James Bond are cooler than all other known forms of life. He's a super-spy of James Bond calibre who runs a ninja-training school! He has a rocket-launching pistol! He has a bevy of bikini-clad babes at his beck and call! And they're all ninjas too!

Actually, Tanaka said it to Bond.

I’m sure both are glad that scene happened in the years before slashfic had spread beyond its nascent Star trek fandom roots.

Real Name: Ernst Stavro Blofeld
Known Aliases: Franz Oberhauser
Occupation: Super-Villain
Education: University of Warsaw; Warsaw University
Date of Birth: May 28, 1908
Base of Operations: Mobile
Height: 5'7" (1.70 m)
Weight: 140 lbs. (63.5 kg)
Eyes: Varies
Hair: Bald
Race: Human
Identity: Secret
Religion: Unknown
Relationships: Nena Blofeld (daughter)
Legal Status: Citizen of Poland with criminal record.

Background:
Ernst Stavro Blofeld is a fictional character and villain from the James Bond series of novels and films, created by Ian Fleming. A criminal mastermind with aspirations of world domination, he is the archenemy of the British Secret Service agent James Bond. Blofeld is head of the global criminal organisation SPECTRE and is commonly referred to by the code-name "Number 1" within this organisation.

Blofeld appears or is heard in three novels: Thunderball, On Her Majesty's Secret Service; and You Only Live Twice; as well as seven films From Russia with Love; Thunderball; You Only Live Twice; On Her Majesty's Secret Service; Diamonds Are Forever; For Your Eyes Only; and Spectre. He also appears in 1983's Never Say Never Again the semi-kinda-unofficial remake of Thunderball.

Blofeld has been played on screen by Donald Pleasence, Telly Savalas, Charles Gray, Max von Sydow, and Christoph Waltz, among others. It was initially a convention of the films not to show Blofeld's face, only a close-up of him stroking his white, blue-eyed Persian cat.

Many of Blofeld's characteristics have become tropes in popular fiction, representing the stock character of the supervillain, with the stroking of his white cat often retained as a parody allusion to Blofeld's character, as seen in the Austin Powers film series with the character of Dr. Evil and his cat Mr. Bigglesworth, or in the cartoons Inspector Gadget with the character of Dr. Claw, Danger Mouse with the character of Baron Silas Greenback, and Team Rocket leader Giovanni and his Persian cat from Pokémon.

According to Fleming's novels, Blofeld was born on May 28, 1908 (which also happens to be Fleming's birthday) in Gdingen, Imperial Germany (now Gdynia, Poland); his father Ernst George Blofeld was Polish, and his mother Maria Stavro Michelopoulos was Greek, hence the well-known Greek name Stavro. After World War I, Blofeld became a Polish national. As a young man, he was well-versed in the social science disciplines, but also in the natural science and technology disciplines. He first graduated from the University of Warsaw with a degree in Political History and Economics, and then from the Warsaw University of Technology with a degree in Engineering and Radionics. He was then hired by the Polish Ministry of Posts and Telegraphs and appointed to a sensitive communication position, which he used for buying and selling stocks at the Warsaw Stock Exchange.

Foreseeing World War II, Blofeld made copies of top-secret wires and sold them for cash to Nazi Germany. Before the German invasion of Poland in 1939, he destroyed all records of his existence, then moved first to Sweden, then to Turkey, where he worked for Turkish Radio and began to set up his own private intelligence organisation. During the war, he sold information to both sides. After the defeat of Erwin Rommel, he decided to back the Allied war effort, and was awarded numerous medals by the Allied powers after the war's end. Blofeld then moved temporarily to South America before founding SPECTRE.

In the John Gardner novel For Special Services, Blofeld is depicted as having had a daughter with a French mistress named Nena.

The New Blofeld:
Blofeld was absent from the films for decades, due to the legal dispute between Kevin McClory and Eon Productions over the Thunderball/You Only Live Twice copyrights. When this was eventually resolved, Blofeld reappeared in Spectre, played by Christoph Waltz, and with a radically new background. In this continuity, he was born Franz Oberhauser, the son of Hannes Oberhauser, Bond's legal guardian after he was orphaned at the age of eleven, making him and Bond adoptive brothers. As a young man, he murdered his father, staged his own death, and took on the alias of Ernst Stavro Blofeld, using his mother's maiden name. He then assembled the global criminal organisation known as Spectre (not an acronym in the new continuity). He is revealed to have been trying for years to destroy Bond, whom he resents for having been his father's favorite; he is thus revealed to have been the power behind the villains of the previous three films, who were all Spectre agents. At the end of the film, Bond takes him into custody after foiling his plan to take control of the world's national security intelligence data. This incarnation of Blofeld again wears a jacket without lapels, has a full head of hair, and is disfigured in the course of the film, echoing the Pleasence version's dueling scar. He is also briefly shown holding a white Persian cat.

Donald Pleasence's Blofeld is the definitive portrayal of the character, bar none. Telly Savalas and Max von Sydow, although great actors, just don't quite have the same air of alien menace as Pleasence.

Christopher Waltz is almost as good, but Spectre just isn't a very good movie. It's got severe pacing problems (although much better than Quantum of Solace) and I really hate the whole "evil foster brother" origin story. If they bring the Blofeld character back in a sequel, I do hope they keep Christopher Waltz in the role... I just hope they pick up the pacing.

I honestly can't even remember if I've seen a legitimate Blofeld appearance. But damn, what a super-villain. I love how he's just "The Bad Guy" in those movies, yet is so completely memorable that he becomes an icon all to himself. I feel he'd be more famous if he had a half-decent name ("Blofeld" ain't exactly fearsome), but I think most people can figure out any villain mimicking him on-sight ("ah, he's petting a cat- THAT's our bad guy!").

I've never seen the modern Bond films. I've heard varying stories, none any better than "EH, it's pretty good", yet those movies made an INSANE amount of money. I think one or two of them even did better than Frozen did overall. Huge, HUGE moneymakers- bigger than any of the other ones.

Re: Batgirl III's Character Thread (Ernst Stavro Blofeld)

Post by Batgirl III »

Ian Fleming actually named Blofeld after a classmate of his from school, Henry Blofeld... I’ve always assumed Fleming wanted his ultimate villain to have the same sort of bland, nondescript name that his hero had. It’s kind of hard to remember now, but the name “James Bond” was meant to be rather boring. Since it’s been sixty-five years since Dr. No debuted and the name James Bond has become synonymous with debonair and dangerous. “Ernst Blofeld” sounds like a kindly old immigrant man who runs a bird-seed supply store... Not a master criminal.

Which is why I cannot help but chortle when Christopher Waltz delivers what is meant to be this big, shocking reveal: “My name is... Ernst. Stavro. Blofeld!” I cant help it, it’s just soooo silly.

I enjoyed three of the four “modern” Bond movies well enough. Casino Royale was a good, solid Bond adventure; Skyfall was solid too; Spectre was fun the first time I watched it, but once you know the plot twists then it’s pacing problems become real evident on re-watches (and no, Blofeld’s reveal shouldn’t shock ANYONE, the movie’s named Spectre for crissake). As for Quantum of Solace, how can I put this... I don’t know if it’s good or bad.

I fell asleep in the theater when I went to see it. I’ve fallen asleep during the movie the two times I’ve tried to watch my copy of the DVD. So, yeah, I’m going to have to say it doesn’t keep me glued to the screen.

If you want a proper, old-fashioned action-adventure romp that won’t put you to sleep, You Only Live Twice is a must see. Especially for superhero Game Masters. Donald Pleasence as Blofeld is THE super-villain mastermind that all others must be measured against. Kissy Suzuki is as cute as a box of kittens. Aki is a sexy badass. Tiger Goddamn Tanaka.
