The Multiverse in My Head: Los Dorados [The Horde]

Post by Yojimbo » Mon Jan 15, 2018 2:26 am

El Aguijón (Sting)
Only months ago, tales of a mutant with the appearance of a scorpion reached Juarez from western Mexico. The woman called herself El Aguijón and led a small band of thugs who preyed upon tourists and resorts along the Pacific coast. El Charro went himself to recruit her. Suitably impressed by her abilities and leadership skills, El Charro offered her a position in the Horde. After some negotiation she accepted, bringing along her gang into the fold as well.

As her first real test, El Aguijón is being sent into Los Dorados as part of La Panthera’s crew. She has a generally low opinion of her fellow mutants and metahumans in the Horde and believes she should have more responsibility, chafing under La Panthera’s leadership.

Description: A tall, thin, spare woman, El Aguijón has pinkish red skin, although much of her body is covered in hard dark red plates like an exoskeleton, which provides considerable defense against attack. She possesses superhuman agility and leaping ability, and like another kind of arachnid, can move at speed along sheer surfaces. She has a set of retractable, thin, super-hard blades on her forearms, which can carve through steel with minimum of effort. Part of the exoskeleton on her spine can unfold from her back, creating a whip-like tail of bone and chitin, at the end of which is a foot long spike with a venom sac, which can inject poison into a victim. El Aguijón wears jeans and halter tops, to leave her arms and back bare, and her black hair is usually tied back into a severe ponytail. She moves weirdly, as though she has extra joints in her limbs that flex in odd ways.

Under the Hood
So I guess there's a creepy scorpion lady in the Horde, too?

The Horde in general is meant to be a bit weirder and alien than the Skulls. El Charro hasn't vetted his group of psychotic mad dogs quite as carefully as Skull has, leading to a group of very twisted and dangerous mutants infiltrating Los Dorados from Juarez.

La Zarpa (Claw)
La Zarpa is a mutant from the mountains of Oaxaca. He was making prize money as a wrestler, and quickly running out of competitors willing to fight him, when El Charro found him and offered him a place in the Horde. La Zarpa graduated from breaking bones to snuffing lives, finding that he enjoyed throwing his weight around and striking terror in the hearts of everyone he met. El Charro pays well and expects only a little brutality in return.

The trip north up to Los Dorados is actually cutting into La Zarpa’s free time lounging around the pool and getting laid as often as possible. La Panthera assures him that the assault on the Skull Gang will only take a few months tops and that no one can stand against them, but privately he’s concerned. La Zarpa has never been in a fight where his opponent wasn’t much weaker than him, and he’s a little uncertain about these American superheroes.

Description: A tall, massively muscled man with bronze skin and thick black hair. His whole body is covered in a thick layer of hair in fact, giving him a hirsute appearance. No matter how much he shaves, he always has a beard, and as a consequence he’s let it grow out thick and full so it spills down his chest. La Zarpa is thick around the midsection from too many years of good living, but that doesn’t appear to impede him in the least. He is superhumanly strong and durable, able to shrug off anything short of explosives and completely ignoring most hand-held weapons. La Zarpa can also flip over a bus with minimal effort, and he’s been known to pick up a car and throw it across a city block to prove a point. He can see twice as far as a normal human in conditions of low light, like twilight, and his sense of smell is highly acute, allowing him to recognize individuals by scent alone. His broad, thickly knuckled hands end in thick black claws which are strong enough to cut through just about anything, and correspondingly difficult to trim back. He sharpens them on concrete blocks and junked cars.

Under the Hood
But Grizzlor I remember pretty well. All the He-Man figures had some sort of gimmick. Grizzlor's gimmick was having fur. Pretty lame as these things go, actually.

La Zarpa is destined to get his ass kicked by Ape or Champion - maybe both - but he's at least capable of doing some damage before he goes down. Being able to pick up a dump truck and throw it a fair distance is nothing to sneeze at.

Zebra's pretty cool- a very unusual character type, and an animal you don't see very often in things like this :).

Grizzlor looked hilariously like those patches women wore over their privates in softcore movies back in the day :).

Thanks. Yeah, most animal-themed characters go with predators rather than prey. I guess its easier to work out superpowers that way.

A merkin? I think they still use those. In certain productions.

The Multiverse in My Head: Los Dorados [The Horde]

La Batería (Battery)
La Batería was born in Juarez and already a runner for the Horde as a child, poised to join the gang in a more active role when he became a teenager. So when his mutant abilities manifested, he was already loyal to El Charro. It took a frustratingly long time for the nature of his powers to become obvious, however, and La Batería suffered the occasional beating and berating before he lashed out at La Panthera and shut her down. Since then, he’s become one of the most valuable members of the gang, especially when it comes time to face off against other powered individuals.

La Panthera picked him personally to accompany her to Los Dorados as a deterrent against the other mutants in the Skull Gang in particular, and costumed do-gooders in general. He still harbors a deep resentment against her, but he follows El Charro’s orders to the letter.

Description: Slim and unassuming, La Batería has light green skin and emerald eyes that glow when his powers activate. He shaves obsessively, as his hair only comes in as irregular patches, and as a result he ends up looking vaguely reptilian. La Batería has the psychic ability to control the powers of other metahumans. He can target individuals or groups, causing their abilities to shut down or go haywire. A favorite tactic is to turn off a target’s durability and then watch as his allies take them apart. In addition, he can enhance the abilities of superhumans to a smaller degree, an ability he uses exclusively on allies. Since he otherwise has no other defenses or attacks, he usually wears body armor underneath his clothes and carries a large handgun.

Under the Hood
Leech is the only other member of Hordak's crew that I really remember. I think there's a guy whose eyes extend? And then there's Modulak, who is cool as a toy but really doesn't fit into Los Dorados at all. Just a little too weird.

Anyway, Battery is here to give the Horde agents in LD a little edge and to really mess with the mutants and powered individuals in the various gangs (especially the Skulls). Of course, this guy is going to get a nasty surprise when he meets Fox or Vixen.

El Charro (The Horseman), Victor Cruz
Victor Cruz started from humble beginnings, growing up on a farm in central Mexico, but was forced north when the family farm was seized by the government. His father managed to get into the U.S. and sent money back to his mother, but the furthest Victor or his younger siblings got was Juarez before his mother was raped and murdered. Forced on to the street and with two little sisters to look after, Cruz fell in with one of the local gangs. He rose through the ranks quickly, gifted with a natural intelligence and likeability, as well as a complete lack of conscience that allowed him to do horrible things without flinching.

By his mid-20s, he had enough of a power base within the gang that he was able to stage a coup and overthrow the local crime lord, ensconcing himself in his place. He re-christened the gang as “the Horde,” imagining himself as a modern day Genghis Khan and his followers as modern Mongols ready to conquer the world. And the combination of ruthlessness and brilliance with which he ruled the Horde enabled him to become very rich and very successful, and feared across a wide swathe of Northern Mexico.

One of Cruz’ most trusted lieutenants was a young man named Hector Diaz. Diaz reminded Cruz of himself, brilliant and ambitious and ruthless all at once, and he took the young man under his wing. He treated him like the brother he never had, and Diaz became the virtual second-in-command. But he was planning on betraying his benefactor and caught Cruz completely unprepared. Diaz stole millions of dollars and Cruz’ young wife, but also attacked and crippled Cruz and left him for dead. Diaz fled Juarez for Los Dorados where he set up his own criminal empire.

During those years, Cruz recovered. He had to quell a few other uprisings from lesser followers who incorrectly sensed weakness from the Horseman. He used his riches to locate mutants across Mexico and coerced or hired them into the Horde. He found an unscrupulous and brilliant surgeon who could rebuild Cruz’ body and make it even better. And he plotted his revenge.

Now the Horde is stronger than ever. El Charro is stronger than ever. And the time is ripe for the Horde to strike. Los Dorados will never even know what hit it.

Description: El Charro was once a tall, good looking and imposing man in his early middle years, exceptionally well dressed and groomed, never a hair out of place. Now he is twisted and scarred, with more than half of his body replaced by cybernetics and machinery. He is still tall, but now his muscles are corded steel and mesh, giving him increased strength and agility. He can run as fast as a sports car or leap tall buildings in a single bound. His vitals are protected by thick plates of body armor that make his outline bulky but also make him virtually impossible to harm. The left side of his face is immobile plastic and metal, his eye replaced with an electronic lens that provides nightvision and thermo-imaging, while sensors in the back of his head ensure no one can sneak up on him ever again. He can reconfigure his right hand and forearm into a powerful machine gun and his left hand and forearm into a grenade launcher, storing the ammunition for both within a special compartment in his abdomen. His form is silver and black, with the red bat of the Horde displayed prominently on his chest.

The Horseman doesn’t appear in public any longer, and it is assumed that the injuries he suffered years ago have disfigured him and made him reclusive. His enforcers and his lieutenants ensure he is still feared and known across Mexico, and anyone who doesn’t pay El Charro the proper respect soon finds themselves visited by a brutal cybernetic enforcer wearing a black and silver mask that resembles Camazotz, the bat-god of the Mayans.

Under the Hood
El Charro remains in Mexico for the time being. He will come to Los Dorados when he believes the time is ripe to reap his revenge and not a moment sooner. It's up to La Pantera to set things up for El Charro to make his grand entrance. And then the streets really will run red with blood.

I always kind of liked Hordak, even with his weird snort. The white bat face and the arms that turned into guns with the big red bat symbol across his chest - and the fact that Skeletor was kind of afraid of the guy helped sell him really well. I really wish the Mike Young series from 2002 had been able to get to a Hordak season. I think some cool stuff could have happened then - I mean, they made King Hiss a badass, and that's not nothing.

Disco King, Stuart Keene
A gifted musician who never got the break he expected would one day come. Partly because of his abrasive personality and partly his belief that life should be handed to a genius like him on a silver platter, rather than earned through hard work, and partly because he was never lucky enough to make it in the entertainment industry.

Keene is a virtuoso, gifted with the ability to play a variety of instruments. He is also a mechanical and mathematical genius, but whatever his talents, he lacks the spark of empathy or emotional honesty that would have made him a great musician. Instead, out of bitterness and hatred, Keene built himself an unorthodox musical instrument, the Keytar of the Disco King, which will give him the power to take whatever he wants. No longer will he toil in obscurity, his genius unrecognized and uncelebrated. He will make people stand up and notice him – even if he must force them to do so.

Description: Lanky and long-limbed, Stuart Keene has large, expressive hands with long, delicate fingers that were designed to coax music from guitars, pianos, and other instruments. Smart and roguishly handsome, there still remains something reptilian and repellent about him, which makes people keep their distance even while being utterly fascinated by him. As the Disco King, Keene wears a white seersucker suit with an open neck, a brightly colored shirt, pink tinted glasses, and ridiculous platform shoes. He wields an oversized keyboard which he wears on a strap around his shoulders, using it to conjure up a variety of sound based tricks. He can generate a field of sound around him that can deflect attacks, knocking projectiles out of the air or slowing down close attacks just enough that the Disco King can avoid them. At the same time, the keyboard can be used to generate destructive waves of sound. Most devastatingly, Keene can use the keytar to manipulate the minds and emotions of entire crowds of people, forcing them to do his bidding.

Under the Hood
The Fiddler, the Pied Piper, the Hypno-Hustler - there are a lot of bad guys who use sound and mind control. This is one of them. The name comes from a David Bowie song on the Underworld soundtrack. Terrible movie, great soundtrack. I think "Disco King" makes for a great supervillain name. Kind of pathetic and grandiose at the same time.

His alter ego is, of course, a Simpsons reference.

Beauty, Natalia de Jongh
Natalia de Jongh was an Olympic decathlon hopeful for France eight years ago, and breezed through the first trials only to be brought up short when she tested positive for mutant genes. Summarily disqualified from any athletic competitions, her life’s ambitions dashed, Natalia sank into a depression. She slid even further into addiction when a friend turned her on to heroin. It was through that connection and dependence upon the drug that Natalia drew the attention of the Fronde, a gang of international jewel thieves. They indoctrinated Natalia into their organization and coerced her into participating in a number of heists.

To her surprise, she was good at it. And she enjoyed it. With a newfound direction to her life, she kicked the drug habit (aided by her mutant physiology and natural resistance to toxins) and threw herself wholeheartedly into a life of crime. When the Fronde realized they could no longer control her, they tried to reassert their authority. Natalia retaliated by cold-bloodedly killing each of them, one by one.

As the sole remaining member of the gang, Natalia took over their client list and also gained access to their list of potential recruits. Deciding that she needed a partner, Natalia picked Peter Goode off the list, a misshapen mutant whose talents made him a gifted thief. Goode started as the junior partner but quickly proved his worth, so that by the time the pair started calling themselves “Beauty” and “Beast,” he was a full partner. The pair gained a reputation as reliable and expert thieves, and they relocated their home base to Los Dorados, the “City of Gold.” From there, they stage daring robberies all over the world.

Description: Natalia is tall and athletic, beautiful as a supermodel but toned and powerfully built like an Olympic athlete. She has a bronze complexion, long dark hair, and cold blue eyes. Her mutant abilities give her near peak-human physical strength, endurance, agility, and beauty. While not entirely bullet-proof, she can shrug off small arms fire and ignore all but the most deadly attacks entirely. Almost supernaturally healthy, Natalia is immune to temperature extremes, diseases, and toxins as well as radiation, and she can even breathe underwater. Her senses of sight and smell are enhanced, and she can see perfectly in moonlight or read body heat with her eyes. Her sense of smell is so acute she can actually track by scent alone. At the same time, her senses automatically suppress all but the most severe stimuli, protecting her from loud, dazzling noises or bright lights. Besides her abilities, Natalia is a highly trained hand to hand combatant and marksman, and she is adept at getting in and out of seemingly inaccessible places. When operating as Beauty, she wears a black catsuit with gold edging that includes a full mask and ties her long hair back. She uses a variety of tools depending on her target, but always keeps a Beretta pistol and a Heckler & Koch submachine gun close to hand.

Under the Hood
I wanted some foils for the Amazings, which is what Beauty and her partner Beast are supposed to be. They're just cat burglars, basically, but they're in that Hans Gruber league of "exceptional thieves," necessitating superheroes to deal with their crimes. Like a lot of these characters, I had the name and build done long before i came up with a background. De Jongh took a while to come together in my head, but once she did it all combined pretty quickly - from Olympic hopeful to psychotic thief.

Beast, Peter Goode
Born in the north of England with mutant deformities, Peter grew up as a circus and freakshow attraction. He was abused regularly and barely educated, but he developed an animal cunning that kept him alive and served him well as he grew to adulthood. As soon as he reached his majority, he fled his caretakers and headed south to find his destiny. For all his good intentions, he never really had a chance. He looked monstrous, could barely read or write, and had no useful skills besides looking threatening and being able to break things. The London underworld took Peter in and gave him a purpose, if not much of a fulfilling life.

By his twenties, he was headlining an illegal fighting circuit in London and there were few who could stand against him. It was during this period that he drew the attention of the Fronde, the French gang of jewel thieves. When Natalia de Jongh destroyed the group and stole their files, she decided that Peter looked like an attractive future partner. She approached him in London and talked him into quitting his current position and joining her glamourous life as an international thief. More than a little enamored with the beautiful, mercurial Natalia, Peter leapt at the chance for a better life despite having some reservations of continuing a life of crime.

While his romantic aspirations were quickly stymied, Peter nonetheless forged a powerful and meaningful friendship with Natalia. She has never once treated him as less than a worthy person and comrade, and for that she has earned his lifelong loyalty and trust.

Peter has mellowed somewhat since moving to America. He is no longer the bitterly angry young man he used to be, and can actually find joy in simple things now. But he still has a temper and a willingness to unleash extreme violence on anyone who crosses him or Natalia.

Description: Nearly seven feet tall and built like an anvil, Peter is covered in a thick pelt of bluish black hair. He has long arms and bandy legs, and his facial features approximate something between a gorilla and a dog, with prominent canine teeth projecting like tusks. His eyes are small and deeply set, but still sensitive, and he can see well even in dim light. Peter’s sense of smell is much better, however, and he also has a dog’s keen hearing. Powerfully muscled, Peter can bend steel bars with his bare hands or flip over a car with ease. He can leap prodigious distances and also run as fast as a horse, although he often has to use all four limbs to reach top speed. When going out in public, Peter usually wears dark sunglasses and a hooded sweatshirt, even in the desert heat of Los Dorados, in an effort to obscure his distinctive features. When operating as the “Beast,” he wears little more than black biker shorts and purposely peppers his speech with a lot of growls and other animalistic noises.

Under the Hood
Once you have a "Beauty," a "Beast" is not far behind. Vice versa I would assume. Since I was aiming for them to be a thieves guild of two and foils for the Amazings, they had to be complementary. Beauty and Beast are exceptional physical specimens and fairly skilled, but there's no flashy powers beyond that. They work well together though and shouldn't be at all easy to catch, defeat, or contain.

Completely coincidentally, I went to a live performance of Disney's Beauty and the Beast Friday night.

It was an amateur production with a lot of grade school kids in the cast, but the set was really well designed (a staircase and tower, the tower designed to rotate to become "the town" or "Beast's castle"). They had some mic trouble, but even with that you could still generally hear the performers. The guy playing Gaston was great - had the arms for it, as well as a great voice - and the guy playing Le Fou knocked it out of the park, considering it was his first ever performance. Belle was okay, but the guy playing Beast was really good. Hard to sing and emote with those teeth in your mouth (I assume) but he was great. Everybody seemed to have a lot of fun, the characters disguised as furniture in particular.

The Multiverse in My Head: Los Dorados [Beauty and Beast]

Cibola
In East Los Dorados, in the neighborhood of Ashwood, a new gang is forming around an ambitious and charismatic new metahuman known as Cibola. A former Skull Gang member, the Genesys bomb gave Cibola golden skin and superhuman strength, and he decided it was time to strike out on his own and carve out his own criminal empire. Breaking with the Skull would have been unthinkable even a few months ago, but since the Fox arrived and the Genesys bomb went off, the city has been in a state of flux. Cibola wants his piece of the criminal pie. He’s recruited his own followers, other ambitious former Skull Gangers, gathered weapons and vehicles and started plotting several capers. He plans on starting with banks, a flashy and brightly lit a heist as anyone has ever accomplished.

Description: Before the bomb, the man who now calls himself Cibola was a big slab of Latin muscle, fond of wearing tank-tops to show off his biceps and pecs. Now his skin is literally golden, a shiny and reflective coating that is invulnerable to harm. He still shows off, but now he generally wears little more than basketball shorts. In the day, the sun makes him gleam bright and golden, and even under fluorescents, his skin shimmers and glows. His metallic body provides Cibola with increased strength and preternatural health. He talks like a thug, gesticulating wildly with every declaration, and he has a terrible temper, given to breaking the limbs of whoever is frustrating him or picking up a truck and throwing it into a house to prove a point.
Gold Masked Minions
Cibola’s backed up by a troop of fellow former Skull Gangers, each one convinced that somehow Cibola will be able to challenge both the Skull and the authorities.

Description: Cibola’s gang wears gold luchador masks and gold and black uniforms when performing crimes. They’re not bulletproof like their boss, so they wear body armor and arm themselves with a variety of firearms.

Under the Hood
One unintended consequence of the Fox's success fighting crime in Los Dorados is that the Skull looks vulnerable not only to law enforcement, but to other criminals. The other organized crime families are itching to rebel, but there are other splinter groups popping up all over the city. Guys like the Zoo Crew and this guy, the golden skinned and nigh-invulnerable Cibola. He's a go-getter, an ambitious twerp who plans on going in to business for himself. Why should a guy like him pay out some of his profits to the Skull and his cronies, when it would be so much sweeter to keep all the dough for himself?

Guys like Cibola make the setting even more unstable, especially with the imminent gang war to be precipitated by the arrival of the Horde. Los Dorados is going to be a free-for-all, which means it will be desperate for heroes.
