HISTORY
A street thief living in the streets of Egypt, the mutant Ororo Munroe sealed her fate when she attempted to pick-pocket a man who turned out to be Dracula. She eventually managed to free herself from the vampire's control, and found a new purpose among the X-Men. Unfortunately, her thirst for blood overpowered her, which resulted in her killing at least both Beast and Professor X.

Bloodstorm was approached by the Goblin Queen of Earth-91240, and was coaxed to join her Hex-Men with the false promise of being freed of her hunger in exchange of helping the Goblin Queen in her schemes. The Hex-Men traveled to Earth-616 after Pryor manipulated the young Beast living there, and they attacked the the time-displaced X-Men's Mansion in Madripoor.

Seeing a remembrance of the Hank McCoy she once knew, and having finally realized that the Goblin Queen's promises were hollow, Bloodstorm decided to betray her. As a way to make things right with the Hank from her universe, Ororo talked to the young Beast to make him see reason. With Boodstorm's encouragement, Hank conjured a spell which cast the Goblin Queen away. The Hex-Men were teleported with her, save Bloodstorm, who suspected her betrayal severed any bonds she had with Pryor. With no place to go, Cyclops offered Bloodstorm a spot on the team.

Scott and Ororo developed romantic feelings for each other, but Scott was hesitant to act on them since he expected to return to his proper time with the rest of the young X-Men. During a date in which Ororo started to convince Scott to pursue his feelings, the couple was attacked by Ahab and his Hounds. During the ensuing fight, Bloodstorm was impaled by Ahab with his silver-coated spear. Fueled by rage, Scott got the upper hand, forcing Ahab to retreat. Scott carried Ororo's corpse, but it dissolved into dust.

The young Irishman would go on to assist and aid the heroic figures such as Black Knight as well as Captain Britain in various capacities now and then, even having to post bail for Black Knight on one occasion. Before taking the Ebony Blade, Dolan was an amateur swordsman and Black Knight's squire. When Arabian wizards tried to steal the Ebony Blade Sean Dolan took the Ebony Blade and the souls that were killed by the sword took over and Sean Dolan became Bloodwraith. Once he took the blade his swordsmanship increased. He quickly defeated the thieves. Since he was evil, the Avengers and Black Knight came and fought him. The fight eventually ended up to be between Black Knight and Bloodwraith until Bloodwraith fled on Valinor.

Sean Dolan was back in his human form, feeling to guilty to return to Black Knight. When he saw a robbery in progress, he drew the Ebony Blade and transformed into Bloodwraith again. He murdered one of the criminals when Deadpool and Black Knight came. The three fought until Deadpool stole the Ebony Blade and teleported away. Bloodwraith teleported after. He reclaimed the sword, but couldn't drain Deedpool's life force due to the blade being full. Dolan was living at Aran Island hoping to find a way to become rid of the curse. When he drew his sword to throw it into the ocean, he transformed into Bloodwraith. He sensed somebody who wanted the sword. He rode to that person who turned out to be Namor. Namor and Bloodwraith fought until Bloodwraith was proven stronger. Bloodwraith killed Namor. Namor was trapped inside the sword and had to fight the evil souls within the blade. The good and evil souls fought and the good won and Bloodwraith's good side, Sean Dolan, was free, Namor returned to life, and Namor took the Ebony Blade.

The Ebony Blade was trapped within the Negative Zone and Sean rode to the Avenger's and col-lapsed on arrival. The Avengers examined him, and Sean drew Proctor's Ebony Blade. Dolan became a new Bloodwraith, more skeletal. He fought the Avengers and when Vision threatened to destroy the original Ebony Blade, Bloodwraith took his original blade and retreated.

Sean now had hoped to do some-thing good, so he joined a volunteer mission to Slorenia to help rebuild it. The Ebony Blade called to him and he finally drew the sword and then used the sword to steel the souls of Slorenians and Shield agents that were slaughtered by Ultron. The Avengers came in hoping of stopping Bloodwraith, but he was too powerful. So the Scarlet Witch used a spell that would bind Bloodwraith to the Slorenian soil. Now he can never leave. SHIELD set up borders around Slorenia and Blood-wraith retreated deep within Slorenia.

HISTORY
Douglas M. Carmody was in charge of the Carmody Research labs where Dr.James Power was working to perfect his anti-matter power generator. When the Kymellians destroyed the anti-matter generator and Carmody lost his position, he blamed the Power Pack for everything. He then went on to hunt the Power Pack, whom he thought were mutants. Originally, Carmody wore a battlesuit stolen from Project Pegasus as the Bogeyman which was responsible for all of his increased physical characteristics. The battlesuit also gave Carmody armor and a jet pack for flight.

He fought the Warriors Three of Asgard and The New Mutants in his attempt to kill the Power children. Later, he was transformed by the demon N'ashtir into a demonic parody of his former self-the new Bogeyman.

In his new form, his physical characteristics were increased and he was given new powers at the cost of his sanity and his humanity. He went crazier and tried once again to kill Power Pack and kidnap their parents, but when he saw his image in a window, he flipped out and jumped off a building into a canyon of fire and presumably died.

TALENTS: Engineering; Robotics; Computers

CONTACTS: Alpha Flight, Omega Flight, Guardian, Madison Jefferies

HISTORY
Roger Bochs was unable to walk, having had both his legs amputated below the knee. While trying do deal with his resulting psychological issues, he was checked into a clinic. Once there, he quickly befriended another patient, Madison Jeffries.

Bochs was a genius inventor and developed a robot he nicknamed Box (a play on his own last name) that could act for him. He joined the Canadian government organization, Department H, as part of their superhero program. James MacDonald Hudson, H's top agent and founder, worked on similar cybernetic technology for his power suit, and helped Roger develop the telepresence tech necessary to project his consciousness into Box. Bochs was a part of Alpha Flight's training group Beta Flight at the time Department H was shut down by the government.

Bochs was then recruited by the android Delphine Courtney to be part of the villainous team Omega Flight, who were organized by Jerome Jaxon to defeat Alpha Flight and James Hudson. However, Bochs remained loyal to Hudson and joined Omega Flight merely to infiltrate it. Jerome Jaxon was suspicious and stole Boch's control helmet. Jaxon fought Guardian using the Box robot, but was killed by feedback.

Still angry at Jaxon, and wanting to help Alpha Flight, what with Guardian being feared lost, Bochs had Madison Jeffries assist him on a new Box model that the operator would 'phase' into rather than using a control helmet.

Bochs encountered Alpha Flight for the first time during the death of Walter Langkowski and his Sasquatch body. Bochs allowed Shaman to place Langkowski's spirit into the robot temporarily. When Langkowski's spirit was lost at the Crossroads of all Realities, Bochs became Box again and started working with Alpha Flight as a full-time member

Later, Bochs was briefly confined to the robot after suffering from 'the bends' in a deep sea mission when he phased out of the armor at crushing depths.

Bochs sought help from Madison's brother; Lionel was gifted with the mutant ability to affect organic material in the same way as Madison could metal. Lionel gave Bochs a younger body and restored his legs in order for Bochs to appear more attractive to his flirtatious teammate Aurora. However, the insane Lionel used decaying organic material to do so, and it soon decomposed. Bochs became insanely jealous of Aurora's "wandering eye" and attacked her. Madison was able to stop Bochs by trapping him in the Box robot.

Alpha Flight took Bochs to Lionel to see if he could cure Bochs of his seeming insanity. Scramble and Bochs merged themselves into a being called Omega, which they were able to create with their combined intellect and power. Bochs apparently awoke from his psychosis when Madison Jeffries confronted the two using Box. Persuasion was able to separate the two. However, Scramble lobotomized Bochs in order to remain as Omega. Omega was destroyed by Box (Madison Jeffries) who took over the Box robot, killing both Bochs and Lionel.

CONTACTS: Dr. Strange, Sepulchre

HISTORY
While many magical beings were busy preparing for the War of the Seven Spheres, the evil sorceress Malachi sought to use the Moebius Stone to resurrect her lover Krohn and take over the world with its power. Doctor Strange forced Doctor Druid to take his place and use the Secret Defenders to stop her. The unlikely duo of Luke Cage and Deadpool joined Druid and Shadowoman.

Cody and a few others were around a graveyard when Malachi appeared. Seeking energy, she drained the lifeforce of those present. However, the Stone resurrected Cody as Cadaver while Druid's team battled Malachi. Cadaver began to assist the others, claiming he would bring Agamotto's wrath to Malachi. Druid forced the Stone to unmake itself with its own power. Deadpool fulfilled Krohn's wish to return to the afterlife and Malachi was defeated.

Druid teleported Cadaver home as he wished, but his new appearance frightened friends and neighbors and his father had a heart attack when he opened the door. He called an ambulance and then left.

Cadaver continued to assist the team. He managed to injure both the Hulk and Namor as the original Defenders fought Slorioth and Druid, but his form was then seemingly destroyed in the battle.

The Vishanti and the Living Tribunal were called upon by Joshua Pryce to end the conflict. While there Agamotto reformed Cadaver and told him that he would be needed on Earth for the thousands of years that the War of the Seven Spheres would take. Cadaver remains on Earth, waiting for his mission to end.

After the Civil War, he was listed as a potential recruit for the Initiative.

CONTACTS: New Mutants, X-Men, Avengers, Smasher, Sunspot

HISTORY
Samuel Zachery Guthrie was the eldest son of a large farming Kentucky family. Sam attempted to help out his family by working in a coal mine after his father had died there inhaling coal dust. Right on his first day, Sam and his father's friend, Lewis, were trapped in a cave-in. In his panic, Sam manifested his mutant blasting powers which allowed him and Lewis to escape the collapse.

This incident led to Sam to be discovered by Donald Pierce, who recruited him in a plot to attack a young group of mutants Professor Charles Xavier, founder of the X-Men, had assembled. Sam eventually came to his senses and turned against Pierce. Professor Xavier saw the good inside Sam and invited him to join his New Mutants. Cannonball left his family to join the team.

At Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, the New Mutants were tutored by Professor X and trained in the use of their powers in the Danger Room. Though the team was originally created because the Professor was possessed by the Brood Queen egg inside of him for future embryos, Cannonball remained with the team for its entire existence. He formed close friendships with his teammates, Wolfsbane and Sunspot, and a friendly rivalry with Danielle Moonstar (Psyche) who, along with Cannonball, was the team's co-leader.

Cannonball saved the life of international rock star and mutant teleporter Lila Cheney. The two became romantically involved, but due to the nature of Lila's career, their relationship proceeded slowly. Later, during a trip to Asgard Sam ended-up in Nidavellir, where he befriended Eitri, King of the Dwarves. After their adventure in Asgard, the New Mutants found themselves under the guidance of a new teacher, Magneto.

Sam briefly visited his hometown to introduce Lila to his family. His younger brother, Josh Guthrie (who didn't wish to become a mutant), enjoyed a ride on Sam's back and decided that being a mutant wouldn't be so bad if he would get to fly.

When Illyana accidentally separated the New Mutants through time and space Cannonball, Cypher, Mirage, and Warlock were sent to a future where mutants ruled and their former teammates, Sunspot and Magma, were chief Arbitrators who oppressed humans and even kidnapped their mutant children. They were captured and about to be brainwashed until Illyana returned with Professor Xavier, Lilandra Neramani, and Binary.

At a friendly soccer game Bobby da Costa accidentally ended-up giving Sam a concussion. Sunspot ran away, fearing he was a danger to his team. Warlock went after Sunspot and this left Sam and the team feeling deeply guilty and worried about Warlock and Sunspot's whereabouts.

Sam was allowed to attend another of Lila's concerts, where she was attacked by the alien Intergalactic Red-Tape Brigade. The New Mutants arrived and, after Lila was captured, they met Gosamyr, who offered to help get Lila if the New Mutants helped her save her family. While tracking Lila in space, Gosamyr began to play on the emotions of Sam and Bobby, but Warlock and the women seemed to be immune to her powers. After arriving on the planet Lila was on, the New Mutants battled aliens and themselves, until Illyana attacked Gosamyr with her Soulsword and broke her hold on everyone. The New Mutants were captured by Spyder and Gosamyr's family was forcefully matured, until Gosamyr rescued the New Mutants and Lila seemingly sacrificed herself to teleport Gosamyr's family into a sun.

The mutants did not stay under the care of Magneto, as Cannonball and Mirage decided to move the team out from under Magneto's thumb. Magneto revealed that he joined the X-Men, led the New Mutants, and entered the Hellfire Club to build a foundation for control and peace among mutant kind. Magneto explained that the teams were to be his army against the coming war between humans and mutants. Magneto allowed the New Mutants to leave warning that, in time, they would find his ways right.

The New Mutants were introduced to X-Factor and began to live on Ship, merging with the X-Terminators. One of the new members, Tabitha Smith (Boom Boom), developed a crush on Sam.

Cannonball and the other New Mutants left the X-Men's supervision and joined forces with the mysterious war hawk Cable to become the hard-edged X-Force. Cable made Cannonball Second-In-Command of that team.

It was early during this time that Sam was impaled and killed by the mutant Sauron during a clash with an incarnation of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. However, only a few minutes later, Sam was miraculously alive again. It was revealed that Cable had chosen to lead the New Mutants initially because he suspected Cannonball to be an External - a rare, particular type of mutant who is virtually immortal. Cable had come to train Sam to fight Apocalypse, another External who, in Cable's future time, had conquered the world. However, Selene later claimed that Cannonball was not an External, though an alternate explanation for his surviving the wounds Sauron had inflicted is unknown.

X-Force re-established ties with the X-Men and Cannonball accepted an offer to join the latter team. He began to spend a lot of time with Wolverine. During this time, Cannonball defeated the Superman-like Shi'ar agent, Gladiator in single combat--a feat no X-Man has ever matched.

During his time with X-Men, Cannonball found his relationship with Tabitha strained. It was so strained that Tabitha turned to Sam's best friend, Sunspot, for "support". Sam returned to the X-Men for a brief period until he left the team to help his ailing mother. During his time with the X-Men, he also infiltrated the presidential campaign of anti-mutant candidate Graydon Creed, using the alias "Samson Guthry". Despite the rather transparent alias, Sam was able to remain undetected until Creed was assassinated on the eve of the election.

Cannonball rejoined X-Force, now independent of Cable and operating in San Francisco. Cannonball eventually became team leader again, after Siryn sustained injuries. The team eventually found a new mentor, by the name of Peter Wisdom, who introduced the team to the world of espionage. During this time, Sam and Tabitha had gotten back together. After Wisdom's alleged death, Sam led the team again and attempted to continue Wisdom's crusade. Eventually, Sam and other members of X-Force had to fake their deaths.

After X-Force’s dissolution, Cannonball joined several of his former teammates and former members of X-Force and Generation, in the Paris, France branch, of Professor X's international mutant task force X-Corporation. His time with the X-Corporation wasn't a pleasant one. En route to one mission later found to involve the Weapon Plus program, his teammate Darkstar poked fun at him for eating a sandwich that would have rather distasteful consequences for "everybody who went out without an umbrella in downtown Beauvais". This moment of levity at Cannonball's expense did not last, as on that same mission, Darkstar died. At the funeral of Darkstar, Xavier gave Cannonball a note, with the whereabouts of Lila Cheney. Sam decided to take time away from the X-Corporation, as the strain of his life began to get to him.

While away, Sam rekindled his romantic relationship with Lila Cheney for a time. Sam couldn't find peace with his life so he was asked by Storm to join her X-Treme X-Men, a group of X-Men operating outside of Professor X's leadership. During his time with Storm's team, Sam found himself having a reunion of sorts with former teammates, Sunspot and Magma.

He and his teammates later rejoined the central X-Men. Sam eventually got injured on a mission and once again decided to take a break. He used the time to work on his own farm which he bought with his X-Corporation paychecks. While on the farm, Sam found himself teaming up again with Cable and a reformed X-Force against the threat of the Skornn. Later, Sam and former X-Force teammate Siryn went in search of Cable with the mercenary Deadpool. Deadpool derisively referred to Sam as "Cannonballs".

Sam once joined the active roster of the X-Men, whose team was co-led by Nightcrawler and Bishop. He participated in helping the 198 and fighting the Shi'ar Death Commandos. He soon suffered the death of his brother Icarus, who had been killed by William Stryker.

Cannonball served on Rogue's team of X-Men. After defeating the Children of the Vault, Rogue announced the departure of her team from the mansion. Sam felt the need to leave because his brother's death made him feel as if every time he walked through the mansion's doors, he felt as if he was stepping on his grave.

Following the disbanding of the X-Men, Sam returned home and was disgruntled and quickly left. Sam was the target of the Young X-Men after Donald Pierce posed as Cyclops and claimed that Sam had joined the new Brotherhood.

Magik later returned, stating that she was from the not too distant future and that the world and New Mutants would die without her intervention. Cyclops allowed Cannonball to reorganize the original New Mutants squad. Their first mission was to subdue a recently returned Legion. After battling their resurrected teammate, Doug Ramsey, and the Hellions, Doug was freed from Eli Bard's control by Warlock wielding Magik's Soulsword and they both rejoined their former teammates.

Sam joined Wolverine's side and apologized to Dani saying that he couldn't lead anymore and needed to go somewhere else.

He was hired on part-time by Wolverine for the latter's new school. Cannonball taught a course in flying. Samuel took time to check in with his sister Husk, who worked for the school full-time. He, along with others, was worried about Husk's mental state.

After the conflict between the Avengers and the X-Men, Captain America realized that the Avengers should have done more to help mutants, and had allowed the world to hate them due to their passiveness. As a result, he invited various mutants to be part of the ranks of Earth's Mightiest Heroes as well as forming a team of Avengers lead by Havok. Cannonball, together with Sunspot joined the main Avengers team as part of Tony Stark's plan to make the Avengers bigger.

Their first mission was rescuing the main Avengers team, who had been captured on Mars by Ex Nihilo and Abyss. During the Builder War, Sam fell in love and started dating fellow Avenger Izzy Kane, the Smasher.

Due to the distractions her heroic career caused, Izzy became pregnant with Cannonball's child. As soon as she discovered this, she was called to return to Chandilar, the Shi'ar homeworld, with the Imperial Guard. Via a very briefly holographic transmission, Izzy told Sam that she had to go. Cannonball decided to follow her to the Imperial Guard's ship, with the help of the Starjammer, unwilling to let go of Izzy. After saving their ship from enemy forces, Izzy confessed to Sam that she was pregnant. Months after moving to Chandilar, the baby was super-gestated. And in less than 8 months was already born, and he was named Josiah.

Due to his progress on investigating the incursions, Bobby da Costa came to ask Cannonball to return to Earth, Izzy and Josiah went with him.[20] Once again on Earth, Izzy and Sam presented the baby to Izzy's father.

Following the end of the incursion crisis, Cannonball started to commute, spending roughly five days of the week working with Bobby's Avengers Idea Mechanics on Earth and the rest on the Shi'ar planet colony K'rii-VI with Izzy and Josiah. Even though he wanted to spend more time with his family, he easily became homesick. When A.I.M. transitioned into a branch of S.H.I.E.L.D. working for the American government named American Intelligence Mechanics, Sam joined the U.S.Avengers.

Cannonball decided to quit the team so he could live with his wife and son. He returned to Earth only to discover the Alpha Flight Space Program, the Guardians of the Galaxy, and the Ultimates' battle against the Chitauri. He joined the heroes in batle until one of the Chitauri Dragons exploded, throwing Sam miles away into the proximity of Saturn, where he was found unconscious by alien scavengers and sold as a slave. Sam was purchased by a Skrull that went by the alias of Howard Mason, and was taken to Kral X. The Kral System constituted a peculiar portion of the Skrull Empire, a group of planets dedicated solely to the recreation of Earth's culture and media. In the case of Kral X, its prince used it to emulate the 50-year-old TV series The Ritchie Redwood Show.

Sam was imprisoned after trying to ecape, and made acquaintances with a band of captured subversive Skrulls led by Bugface Brown, from whom he learned the history of Kral X. After escaping from captivity and freeing his new allies in the process, Sam confronted Kral X's prince, Ritchie Redwood, and meet up with the U.S.Avengers, who had traveled with Smasher to Kral X in order to save Sam since his Shi'ar medical bio-implants allowed Izzy to track him down. Following Ritchie's defeat at the hands of Bugface Brown, Sam, Izzy and the rest of the U.S.Avengers returned home.

BACKGROUND
Real Name: Mar-Vell
Occupation: Captain in the Kree Space Fleet, former astronomy assistant, adventurer, and "Protector Of The Universe"
Legal Status: Citizen of the Kree Empire, Exiled for treason
Identity: Public
Other Known Aliases: Doctor Walter Lawson
Place of Birth: City of Rad-Nam, planet Kree-Lar, Kree Galaxy (Greater Magellanic Cloud)
Marital Status: Single
Known Relatives: Theodore "Teddy" Altman (Dorek VIII, Hulkling, son); Genis-Vell (son, deceased); Phyla-Vell (Quasar, daughter, deceased); Minister Marvel (nephew, deceased)
Base of Operations: Mobile
Past Group Affiliations: Avengers (Posthumously); formerly Imperial Kree Army, Defenders for a Day, The Organization, Legion of the Unliving
Present Group Affiliation:

KNOWN POWERS:
Over the course of Mar-Vell's life he was, both artificially and cosmologically, augmented and evolved by a host of outside sources that all bolstered his natural Kree genetic structure. The first was by being empowered by cosmic entities, both the false entity called Zo and, later, the true entity named Eon. Subsequently, he was also empowered by such devices as the Psyche-Magnetron and the Nega-Bands.

Kree Physiology: Owing to his Kree physiology, Captain Mar-Vell possessed the natural attributes of the Kree race.
  • Strength: Excellent (20); originally Mar-Vell’s strength was slightly above average for a heavy gravity world Kree.
  • Resistance – poison, disease: Amazing (50) resistance to terrestrial toxins and disease.
  • Invulnerability: Good (10) resistance to damage.
Augmented Physiology: Zo had greatly enhanced Mar-Vell's condition beyond his initial regular limits, making him strong enough to crush boulders, resist heavy impacts, and move even faster than ever before. Under the influence of Eon, his bodily frame was augmented further still.
  • Strength & Endurance: Incredible (40); At Zo's temperance, Captain Mar-Vell's base strength level subsequently became sufficient for him to lift (press) at first 10 tons, later 15 tons
  • Invulnerability: Excellent (20); Mar-Vell's tolerance for blunt trauma was also strengthened
Cosmic Awareness: Captain Mar-Vell's most impressive power was his "Cosmic Awareness," which he received from Eon. This ability allowed him to know exactly what he needed to know at any moment. This could range from what his current location was to discovering an opponent´s weakness. It was a Monstrous (75) power. This power alone made Captain Mar-Vell a force to be reckoned with, but its exact nature and scope have never been clearly defined. It might have been somewhat comparable to Spider-Man's "spider-sense" and to Mantis's awareness of psychic "vibrations," but its scope was far greater than either of those.

Energy Absorption: Dr. Benjamin Savannah's radiation treatment of Rick Jones had altered Mar-Vell's genetic structure in such a way, that not only could he absorb energy with Amazing (50) ability from outside sources but also convert and manipulate it for various uses. He eventually came to rely on solar power rather than the Nega-Bands.
  • Healing – self: Amazing (50); Captain Marvel would eventually learn that he could channel solar/photonic energy through the Nega-Bands to accelerate his own recovery process.
Solar Energy Metabolism: Mar-Vell possessed the ability to metabolize solar energy and convert it for a variety of uses, including conversion of the light of the sun and stars into different forms of light and energy.
  • Flight: Shift X (150) in an atmosphere, CL 3000 in space. While he retained his ability to fly, when doing so using solar power rather than the Nega-Bands, Mar-Vell would leave behind a glowing trail that resembled a star-field.
  • Solar Sustenance: Mar-Vell had no need to eat or drink while exposed to a source of solar energy
.
  • Photon Energy Blasts: Amazing (50) blasts of solar energy.
  • Energy Strike: Mar-Vell could channel energy into his strikes dealing +1CS blunt damage.
EQUIPMENT:
Nega-Bands: Mar-Vell wore and used for much of his career the Kree Nega-Bands. While later in his career he used them less and less.
They focused the wearer’s psionic energies into increasing his Strength and physiology:
  • Hyper Strength: Amazing (50); The bands boosted Mar-Vell’s strength +1cs.
  • Invulnerability: Incredible (40) resistance to damage
  • Flight: Remarkable (30) in an atmosphere, Cl 1000 in space.
  • Life Support: Unearthly ability to survive the vacuum of space. While wearing the bands he had no need for food, water, air or sleep.
  • Energy Blasts: Remarkable (30)
  • Alter-Ego: The bands allow the wearer to trade places with one being wearing a similar pair in the negative zone. The two share a telepathic connection and may communicate across the dimensional boundaries.
WEAKNESS:
The Blackend: Mar-Vell was exposed to nerve gas contained in a canister stolen by Nitro, during their fight, he was able to seal the canister of the gas. but he could not avoid breathing in some of the nerve gas. The gas was carcinogenic and caused cancer cells to develop over time. (Kree use the medical term "Blackend" to refer to the disease known as "cancer" on Earth.) His Nega-Bands kept the disease at bay for many years. Rick Jones appealed to scientific heroes to find a cure for Mar-Vell's cancer, whereupon they found themselves uncomfortably realizing they could have made this kind of effort beforehand for others. The super-heroes did manage to develop a tunic that slowed down Mar-Vell's cancer by 20%, but after a long search for a cure for the Blackend the nerve gas had given him, in which he was unsuccessful, the disease took its toll upon him, and he died of it.

HISTORY
Captain Mar-Vell was a member of the Kree, the alien humanoid warrior race which has forged an empire throughout the galaxy known as the Large Magellanic Cloud. More specifically, he was one of the so-called "Pink Kree." This Kree race has the same color skin as Caucasian Earth humans, to whom those Kree who belong to it are more biologically similar than blue Kree are. Their existence was the result of interbreeding of many of the original blue Kree race with humanoids of other worlds, and they now far outnumber the blue Kree, who, however, still dominate positions of wealth and governmental power in the Kree Empire.

The Supreme Intelligence, or "Supremor," the computerized fusion of great blue Kree minds of the past that governed the Kree Empire for millennia, had encouraged the interbreeding in question because of its realization that the original blue Kree race had reached an evolutionary dead end and hence, being composed of blue Kree minds which it absorbed into itself by means of the "Supremorization" process, it would evolve no farther either. Though it had believed that such interbreeding could have infused new life into the Kree gene pool, in recent years, it had come to believe that this was not having the desired result; the worst example was that it could not absorb pink Kree minds directly into itself.

Then the defeats of Kree Sentry #459 and Ronan the Accuser caused Kree attention to be turned towards the planet Earth, where the Inhumans had been spawned by Kree genetic experimentation on some of the early natives. The Supremor now saw the spontaneous emergences of Earth humans who were possessed of super-humanoid powers, and realized the human potential for development of nearly limitless psionic powers.

It formed a complex plan: Awaken, in an Earth human, the vast psionic power their species could evolve; Cause this Earth human's mind to be linked with that of a pink Kree, since, as mentioned above, they had greater biological similarity to Earth humans than blue Kree did; Forge a psionic link with these two minds, with an unusual plant, the "Millennia Bloom," aiding this, resulting in the Supremor acquiring almost limitless psionic powers but rendering both the pink Kree and the Earth human mindless and subject to the Supremor's full control; and, finally, destroy Earth, using the pink Kree and the Earth human as its agents, to prevent any Earth human with power matching its own from arising.

Other factors in its calculations involved treachery by Ronan and Zarek intended to overthrow it. After causing a near disaster by framing a pink Kree for treason against the Empire, which they would blame on the Supremor after they had killed the supposed traitor, they planned to supplant it as Kree Imperial ruler. The Supreme Intelligence planned, even as it intended to foil that conspiracy, have the pink Kree pawn whom the plotters selected for it be the very pink Kree whom it would have linked to the Earth human.

Seeking the pink Kree who would best meet these many requirements of its highly complex plan, the Supremor found him in Mar-Vell, a captain in the Kree Space Fleet who was already a renowned Kree Imperial war hero, despite his youth. He was then in a relationship with a nurse in the Kree Space Fleet, Una; the Supremor was aware that both of these possessed humane attitudes and sympathies, which had been suppressed in most other Kree in their educations. Moreover, the Supremor was aware of the unrequited love of, or rather the lust after, Una that Yon-Rogg, a colonel in the Kree Space Fleet, felt, and that he was ruthless enough to use any means of disposing of his rivals for her affections; Mar-Vell and Yon-Rogg despised each other as a direct result. The Supreme intelligence thus arranged to have a spy ship dispatched towards Earth, with Captain Mar-Vell serving aboard it, Colonel Yon-Rogg assigned as his commander, and Una serving as a nurse on their spy starship.

But soon after his arrival on Earth, Mar-Vell witnessed the death of Dr. Walter Lawson, a scientist on his way to his new assignment at Cape Canaveral, Florida, in an automobile accident. Coincidentally, Lawson bore an astonishing resemblance to Mar-Vell, so the latter decided to pose as him, the better to study Earth human's progress towards developing means of space travel. While posing as Dr. Lawson, Mar-Vell first met the Cape's security chief, Carol Danvers, for whom he developed a special concern that, in time, caused him to experience love for her. Meanwhile, Kree Sentry #459, which the Fantastic Four had defeated, had been brought to the Cape for study, and Yon-Rogg, hoping that it would destroy Mar-Vell, re-activated it from his starship. Mar-Vell publicly appeared in his green Kree helmet and green-trimmed sky blue uniform to fight the Sentry, which he succeeded in defeating. Onlookers, hearing the Sentry call him by name, believed him to be a new Earth-born superhuman adventurer named "Captain Marvel" and acclaimed him as a hero.

Over the succeeding months, as Ronan, Zarek, and the Supreme Intelligence had all secretly planned, Mar-Vell's sympathy for the people of Earth grew increasingly stronger, and on many occasions, he surreptitiously subverted orders from Yon-Rogg and Ronan that would bring harm to Earth people if obeyed. Finally Yon-Rogg caught Mar-Vell in direct disobedience of an order from the Empire's Supreme Council, and Ronan sentenced Mar-Vell to death by firing squad. Mar-Vell was about to be executed on Earth when Yon-Rogg's firing squad was attacked by a contingent of Aakon warriors. In the melee, Una was fatally wounded by a stray shot by an Aakon. Mar-Vell escaped on an Earth missile, and laid Una's corpse to rest on an asteroid. Yon-Rogg seized Mar-Vell's missile with a tractor beam and hurled it into hyperspace. As the Earth missile had no means of leaving hyperspace, it drifted there for 63 days, by which point Mar-Vell was reduced to an utter state of exhaustion and had lost consciousness.

In time, Ronan and Zarek brought the missile to a small world on the edge of the Kree Galaxy, and once there, they took the now unconscious Mar-Vell to a "multi-sensory illusion chamber" they had constructed. There they caused him to have the illusion that he encountered a godlike being named Zo, which gave him the power that he wanted to be able to destroy Yon-Rogg. The powers that Mar-Vell then received were not illusory: he became far stronger than other known Kree except for Ronan, and he gained the ability to cast sensory illusions and to teleport himself across even intergalactic distances. Mar-Vell briefly returned to Earth. However, Zo "appeared" to him again and ordered him to Hala to battle a gigantic generator of magnetic power, disguised as an idol of the Kree god Tam-Bor, which was capable of destroying the entire planet. Right after Mar-Vell found the generator, Ronan, carrying out his and Zarek's planned attempt to overthrow the Supremor as ruler of the Kree Empire, appeared and accused Mar-Vell of being its creator. Mar-Vell and Ronan fought, but Mar-Vell succeeded in destroying the generator. The Supreme Intelligence's personal "Super-Sentry" then appeared, drove off Ronan, and brought Mar-Vell to the chamber of the Supreme Intelligence, where Zarek stood as a captive. Suddenly Ronan teleported into the chamber and teleported out again with Zarek, leaving a spherical antimatter bomb behind. Though Mar-Vell leaped upon the sphere to save the Supreme Intelligence, the Supremor explained to him that its devices had neutralized it. The Supreme Intelligence honored Mar-Vell with a special uniform colored in red with black trim and gold decorations, and allowed him to retain his newly increased strength and abilities to fly unprotected through space and hyperspace, though he lost his powers to teleport himself and to cast illusions as a result. However, as soon as Mar-Vell left for space, he was suddenly bombarded with a wavelength of electromagnetic radiation and found himself blasted into the Negative Zone, an antimatter continuum alongside that of Earth.

Next, the Supreme Intelligence secretly enabled Mar-Vell to make telepathic contact with Richard "Rick" Jones, a youth who had previously been a companion to the Hulk, Captain America, and the original Avengers. At the time, Jones was attempting to replace James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes as Captain America's partner, even going so far as to wear a duplication of Barnes's special outfit as Bucky. He then did not know that Captain America's greatest enemy, the Red Skull, had recently employed a "Cosmic Cube" to transpose his and the real Captain America's minds into each other's bodies. The Red Skull, in Captain America's body, gave Jones a brush-off that angered the youth, and he abandoned Avengers Mansion in a huff. It was then that Mar-Vell's image, disguised as Captain America's, lured Jones to a hidden and abandoned Kree base on Earth, where he had Jones slip on a pair of "Nega-Bands" around his wrists; owing to their unique properties, the bands promptly shrank to fit Jones's wrists, for which, up to then, they had been too large. Mar-Vell then appeared to Jones in his true form and had Jones strike the nega-bands together above his own head. The result of Jones doing so was that he and Mar-Vell exchanged places: Mar-Vell was instantly teleported to Earth, and Jones, his body surrounded by a protective aura that allowed him to survive, was just as instantly teleported into the Negative Zone. As long as they wore the bands, Mar-Vell and Jones were in total telepathic contact; thus, the Supreme Intelligence had created the psychic link it sought between an Earth human and a pink Kree. The nega-bands remained on Earth on the wrists of whichever of the two, Mar-Vell or Jones, was on Earth at the time. Hence Mar-Vell could return to the Negative Zone by striking the bands together above his own head, thereby returning Jones to Earth.

Mar-Vell soon discovered that he could only remain on Earth for brief periods of time; if he stayed a total of three hours or used enough energy to consume three hours(as he once did against the Hulk), he and Jones would exchange places automatically. This meant that it was Jones who spent most of the time on Earth. However, he was usually willing to exchange places with Mar-Vell at intervals.

The conflict with Yon-Rogg resolved; the origin of Ms. Marvel
Soon after becoming linked with Jones, Mar-Vell confronted Yon-Rogg, who had abducted Carol Danvers as a hostage to use against him. Mar-Vell defeated Yon-Rogg, who died when a nearby Kree device exploded. But in the course of this fight, Danvers was bombarded with radiation from a Kree Psyche-Magnetron, which caused her to develop a half-Kree physiology that was similar to Mar-Vell's own; using the super-human powers she had accidentally acquired by this means, Danvers later became the first costumed adventurer known as Ms. Marvel. Sometime later, Mar-Vell used the Fantastic Four's machine that created a doorway into the Negative Zone to transport Jones out of the Zone, so that they both then existed in the Earth dimension simultaneously and separately.

It was at this point that Ronan, who had been imprisoned along with Zarek, now broke free and seized control of the Kree Imperial government. Almost immediately afterward, war broke out between the Kree and Skrull Empires; this war directly involved the Avengers. Eventually, the Supreme Intelligence contacted Rick Jones and awakened his latent psionic powers. Jones used them to paralyze the entire Skrull Space Fleet as well as Ronan and his forces, thereby ending the "Kree-Skrull War" that had resulted and allowing the Supreme Intelligence to return to power. The Supreme Intelligence then robbed Jones of his power, leaving the youth exhausted and lying on the point of death. As the Supreme Intelligence had planned, Mar-Vell again linked himself to Jones, in the same manner as before, so that his own life force would restore Jones to health.

Mar-Vell returned to Earth, where he discovered that because of the Supreme Intelligence having stripped him of his latent psionic powers, Jones's body had lost its ability to contain both his own life force and Mar-Vell's. Jones was bombarded with a form of electromagnetic radiation by Professor Benjamin Savannah, which had two effects. The first of these was that Jones's body regained its ability to contain both his and Mar-Vell's life forces. The second of these was that Mar-Vell himself acquired the power to absorb solar energy and use it for flight, strength, and firing bolts of force. Unfortunately, Savannah himself was killed just after administering this radiation treatment to Jones.

Soon afterward, Mar-Vell became embroiled in fighting Thanos and his plans for destroying all life in the universe. Mar-Vell was teleported to the presence of the extraterrestrial being called Eon, which had been created thousands of years before to watch over the evolution of super-human beings on Earth. Eon induced Mar-Vell to reject the Kree's love of warfare entirely, and to reach inner peace. Eon then granted Mar-Vell a psionic ability called "cosmic awareness," whose exact nature and scope were not clearly defined, and designated him as "Protector of the Universe." Thanks to these changes in himself, Captain Mar-Vell became the primary force in bringing about Thanos's defeat.

But Mar-Vell's next encounter was the one that ultimately led directly to his own death. For in it, Mar-Vell faced off against the criminal Robert Hunter, who had acquired the power to explode his own body at will and later re-integrate himself physically without being harmed, and who called himself Nitro. Just before he and Mar-Vell fought, Nitro had stolen a canister of a powerful nerve gas. During the fight between the two, a leak developed in the canister of gas, and even though Mar-Vell used his high strength level to seal the canister, he could not avoid breathing in some of the nerve gas himself, and it caused him to collapse. Nitro had lost their fight, and Mar-Vell himself seemed to recover fully afterwards. Unfortunately for Mar-Vell, however, as he was eventually to learn, the nerve gas also had the side effect and after-effect of carcinogenesis, the causation of cancer.

As time passed, Mar-Vell and Jones learned that they could both exist in the Earth dimension simultaneously by concentrating on the nega-bands. However, to maximize Mar-Vell's power when necessary, they would still merge. The Supreme Inelligence, as per its true plans (described above) for them, orchestrated events so as to force Jones and Mar-Vell to share the power of the nega-bands and then, as the Supremor, challenged them in battle at the same time, intending to defeat them in time for the "Millennia Bloom" to ravage their minds, reducing both of them to mindless soldiers whom the Intelligence would use to destroy Earth, so that no Terrestrial could ever arise with power matching its own, and absorb Jones's potential. But its plans were foiled when Jones activated the Intelligence's ship's weapons systems to trigger a solar flare from Hala. The Intelligence was forced to divert all of its energy into the planetary shields, leaving it and all of the Kree powerless and unconscious.

After Mar-Vell passed too closely to a black hole, Jones was again trapped in the Negative Zone. Mar-Vell and Jones lost their shared ability to communicate with each other through the bands, and neither of them could last longer than nine hours in the Zone at a time. Mar-Vell managed to solve this problem during a battle with the Super-Adaptoid, tricking the robot into mimicking the nega-bands and then striking them together above its own head, which dispatched the Adaptoid to the Negative Zone and returned Jones to Earth, freed of his dependence on Mar-Vell.

But finally, and tragically, the lung cancer ("Blackend" in Kree medical terminology) that the nerve gas he had breathed in, during his fight against Robert "Nitro" Hunter, had afflicted Mar-Vell with took its toll upon him, his efforts to find a cure for it having failed. Mar-Vell relocated to Titan, a moon of Saturn, on which he spent his last days and where he died, surrounded on his deathbed by his by-then lover Elysius of Titan, Jones, the Avengers (who accepted him into their ranks on an honorary and posthumous basis), and various other friends. He was even awarded the Royal Skrull Medal of Valor, brought to him by General Zedrao.

During the Chaos War event, Mar-Vell was one of the deceased Avengers resurrected from the dead due to a weakening in the veil between life and death. Alongside several other Avengers, he faced off against minions of the Japanese god Amatsu-Mikaboshi and former Avengers foes Grim Reaper and Nekra while working to save the living Avengers who, due to Nightmare's earlier defeat, had been left in a comatose state. Mar-Vell ultimately re-sacrificed his life to enable the Swordsman and Yellowjacket to escape.

Most recently, during the war between the Avengers and the X-Men, Captain Mar-Vell was again resurrected by the Kree Empire using the M'Kraan Crystal to unite and protect all of the Kree against the Phoenix Force. This plan was orchestrated by the Minister Marvel, the nephew of Mar-Vell, and by his son, in order to clear his family name. Mar-Vell himself was brainwashed, along with all the other Kree and everyone powered by Kree energies, into believing that the Phoenix would bring their salvation. The Vision, a synthezoid created by Ultron from the remains of the by-then destroyed first Human Torch who had then betrayed his own creator and joined the Avengers, managed to free Mar-Vell and the other Kree from the illusion, but too late to evacuate the planet, as the Phoenix drew ever closer to Hala. Mar-Vell realized that the Phoenix was coming to claim the portion of its power that had been used to resurrect him the second time and still resided within him. He re-sacrificed himself to save Hala, and the Phoenix departed for Earth. Mar-Vell's corpse later landed on a desert planet and, having been touched by the Phoenix, sprouted the first plant life on the planet.

In recent decades, the Caretaker aided Naomi Kale in her attempts to spare her children [Johnny, Danny and Barbara] from the family curse of Noble Kale, placing Danny and Barbara in Cypress Hills with a woman named Francis Ketch and left Johnny with Craig "Crash" Simpson. Aware that Naomi had cast spells to prevent Johnny from being bound to their ancestor, Noble Kale, Caretaker turned most his own attentions to watching over Dan and his sister. His patience payed off when Barbara was badly injured and Danny transformed into the newest version of the spirit of vengeance, Ghost Rider.

The Caretaker has served as a mentor and friend to Dan and Johnny them information on their family history [Noble Kale, their mother, etc.] he also told them they were in fact brothers also fighting alongside them against Zarathos during the Siege of Darkness. He was later captured by Zarathos and the Fallen but was later rescued and joined in on the final fight.

Years later, while at his shack containing all the info on the Spirits of Vengeance, his shack got attacked by Dan Ketch who was working for Zadkiel and other Ghost Rider villains. He defeated The Orb, Death Ninja, Blackout, and Doghead, but was killed by Dan Ketch in the end after taunting him about how he was the accidental Ghost Rider. From there, the mantle of Caretaker went to his granddaughter Sara.

Then in heaven, Zadkiel tore his soul apart and tossed it into the eternal winds. Where he would suffer for all eternity.

HISTORY
Sara is the granddaughter of the Caretaker. Shortly after she was born she was left in the care of the Sisters of the Holy Sepulcher, an order of nuns that trained to be the soldiers of god. When she was older she decided it was time to learn of her family legacy. When she arrived agents of Zadkiel had attacked the house and had set it on fire. Before the fire had destroyed the library of the past riders, she was able to absorb the knowledge of the library. Taking a few items from the Caretakers store and changing out of her habit into more street clothes, she decided to help the Ghost Rider (Johnathan Blaze) to stop Zadkiel.

When Zadkiel took over Heaven, Sara helped the Ghost Riders Johnny Blaze and Danny Ketch in the fight against him after finding out that the Deacon had murdered all of her sisters at the Sacred Convent of the Sisters of the Holy Sepulcher, and she felt a need for vengeance.

Along with the brothers and their allies Daimon Hellstrom and Jaine Cutter, she aided Anton Satan in surviving and dethroning Zadkiel. Anton revealed that Sara was a living portal. Restraining her Anton revealed that he planned to invade Heaven with an army of demons he would summon from the portal in Master Pandemonium's chest. Recovering from the experience after disappearing briefly in a flash of light, she walked in on the Deacon before he killed the last of the Gun Nuns. The two fight and Sara slashed his back, severing his spine and crippling him. He ordered her to kill him but she refused, knelt down and prayed. After sending the Deacon to a hospital alongside the Orb, she followed both Ghost Riders off on a new adventure, her own motorcycle alongside theirs.

CONTACTS:

HISTORY
In prehistoric times, the man who would come to be known as Centurious was the prince of an Amerindian tribe. He bargained his soul to Mephisto in order to combat the demon Zarathos and save the woman he loved, becoming a soulless immortal in the process. He lived many lifetimes and learned many things over the following centuries. In Ancient Egypt, he studied the mystic arts, and acquired the Crystal of Souls. He had many occupations, aliases, and wives in the years to come, including that of the owner of a Louisiana plantation.

In modern times, he first encountered and battled Johnny Blaze, the Ghost Rider. He used Reverend Dombue to control the town of Holly. Centurious battled the Ghost Rider again, trapping Johnny Blaze in the soul crystal. The soul crystal was shattered by the Ghost Rider, which freed John Blaze's soul from the soul crystal. Centurious and Zarathos were then trapped within the soul crystal, battling each other.

Years later, Centurious was revealed to have granted supernatural powers to Reverend Styge, the third Sin-Eater. Centurious disciplined Styge after his defeat by the second Ghost Rider, Daniel Ketch. Centurious set Steel Wind and Steel Vengeance against the new Ghost Rider and John Blaze. Hag, Troll, and Deathwatch were turned over to Centurious by Steel Wind and Steel Vengeance. He then set the Firm against Ghost Rider and Archangel. Centurious killed his minion Mr. Stern for disobeying orders, and captured Heart Attack. His identity as the head of the Firm was revealed, as was his face finally revealed. He again battled Ghost Rider, and formed an alliance with the Lilin. In a later battle, Blaze appears to kill Centurious.

During the Siege story line, Centurious appeared as a member of the Hood's crime syndicate.

Base of Operations: Other-Realm (his personal dimension); formerly Wundagore Mountain, Transia; mobile
Past Group Affiliations: Elder Gods, Old Ones/Great Old Ones, Darkholders
Present Group Affiliation:

KNOWN POWERS:
Elder God: Chthon is one of the most powerful Elder Gods of Earth.
  • Immortality: while within his other real prison, Chthon cannot be slain.
  • Invulnerability: Monstrous (75), Chthon is impervious to most attacks save those by magic.
  • Telepathy: Unearthly (100)
Reality Alteration: Chthon’s will is supreme in his Other Realm prison. He may make any alteration to that realm he wants to with Cl 1000 ability.

Sorcery: Chthon created many of the magics and lore used throughout history. He may use any listed Power as a spell. He uses these abilities at the Shift Z (500) level. He must pay a cost in Karma equal to the rank of the effect he wishes to simulate.

Demonic Possession: If the proper rituals are performed, Chthon can also take over mortal host-bodies on Earth, but he cannot easily transfer all of his totality to these forms, and often even the fraction he can is too much for the form to contain.
Host forms are limited in how much of Chthon’s power they may channel. The host needs to make a Psyche FEAT roll the results determine how much of Chthon’s power they may possess. White = -2CS, Green = -1CS, Yellow = Psyche Rank, Red = +1CS Psyche Rank. Certain Talents like Mystic Origin add +1CS to the result.

LIMITATION:
  • Dimensional Entrapment: Without the Darkhold, Chthon is unable to move freely through dimensions and is trapped in his own because it would take an enormous mystical rift to convey the immense mystical power of the Elder God.
  • Dependency on Extra-dimensional Living Vessel: As shown during several of Chthon's summoning on Earth, though the occupation of a human would enable Chthon to share the human's abilities, he would also be left more vulnerable, in both mind and body, even magically augmented. For example, it is through a physical mind that a human processes information and which a human mystic can utter incantations and thus cast spells to work magic; if the physical mind or its processes were somehow disrupted, even threw non-mystical means, Chthon would be temporarily deprived of spell-casting ability.
  • Eldritch Magic: Chthon and those augmented by his power are vulnerable to eldritch magic, including that of the Darkhold itself
TALENTS: Chthon is one of the writers of ALL occult lore.

CONTACTS: Gea, Morgan Le Fey, Mordred the Mystic, The dwarf, The Other, Darkholders

HISTORY
Billions of years ago, Cthon was one of the first Deviants mutated by the Celestials First Host. They experimented on the planets lifeforms creating a race of Elder Gods, the foremost of which were Chthon, and his siblings Set, Gaea, and Oshtur. The Elder Gods proliferated across the planet and ruled it for a million years. Chthon spent his time studying the mystical forces of the universe and eventually became the Earth's first black magician.

Over time, at least 1 billion years ago, the Elder Gods degenerated and turned into demons, warring with one another and struggling for power and influence. Gaea, who had not been corrupted, feared for the safety of the new life brewing within the Earth's oceans. She went to the Demiurge and asked it to conceive in her a means in which to vanquish the demons. She entered the depths of the Earth and gave birth to Atum, the first of a race of new gods. Atum went around the Earth, slaying the demons and absorbing their energy. Atum then took on a monstrous appearance and became Demogorge, the God-Eater.

Chthon managed to escape the God-Eater by fleeing into another dimension, which he was imprisoned within. Before he left, Chthon inscribed all his arcane knowledge on scrolls made from indestructible parchment and left them behind to serve as a physical link between Earth and his new home should he ever choose to return.

One million years ago, Chthon led a faction of evil Gods in a war against another group. Chthon's side was defeated and banished from Earth and to the other-realm by their opponents.

Over the centuries, humans would find the scrolls and other writings left by Chthon, eventually bounding them together in a single volume: the Darkhold.

Chthon's new dimension was close enough to continue influencing Earth. A pact was struck between the surviving Elder Gods (Chthon, Set, Gaea, and the returning Oshtur) that each would occupy their own realms and not directly interfere with each other’s' territory. Earth was the realm of Gaea, and so Chthon was banned from ever returning there, or else face the wrath of the Demogorge. Still, he found ways to intervene indirectly, through the demon races he created, which were not bound by his oath. The N'Garai were among the demon races he spawned. He was soon worshiped by the "first who crawled out of the mud" to worship the Great Old Ones, the Broodlings of Chthon, whom he also created.

Meanwhile, the Darkhold scrolls found their way to Pre-Cataclysmic Atlantis. The first vampires were created there using Chthon's power, including their Lord Varnae.

In medieval times, Morgan le Fay formed a cult of mystics around the power of the Darkhold, and attempted to summon Chthon to do their bidding. Being invited back to Earth by its residents was a loophole in Chthon's pact with the other Elder Gods, although he was under no obligation to obey his summoners. Realizing their mistake, Morgan's cult could not fully banish Chthon from Earth as he was in primordial times. Instead, they bound him to a single location on Earth, Mount Wundagore in what would become the Eastern European nation of Transia.

Morgan's tower became the resting place for the Darkhold itself, bound by spells to prevent it from being used for evil. A mystic from the Age of Camelot known as Modred entered the tower, intending to harness the power of the Darkhold for good. In his guise as the Other, Chthon appeared to Modred and tried to bargain for his soul. Modred refused to give up his soul to the demon, but when his lady love Janice entered the tower (and Chthon's field of influence) Modred sacrificed his soul to spare Janice's.

In modern times, the High Evolutionary built his citadel on Mount Wundagore, and unknowingly came under Chthon's watch. His associate Jonathan Drew was possessed by the spirit of Magnus, one of Morgan le Fay's old disciples, and warned against the threat of Chthon. After evolving his New Men from animals, the High Evolutionary trained them with a code of honor like the knights of old, preparing them to face Chthon should he ever rise again. Indeed he did, and so Magnus and the Knights of Wundagore drove Chthon back into his mountain slumber.

Before he left this world, however, Chthon reached out and touched an infant girl being born on Wundagore that night, marking her as a potential vessel for the future. That girl would be called Wanda.

Modred resurfaced in the modern era, awakened from his long sleep, but he continued to resist the influence of the Other.

After Modred finally succumbed to Chthon's influence, he captured the Scarlet Witch and performed the ritual allowing Chthon to use her as his vessel on Earth. Wanda, as Chthon, opposed the Avengers when they arrived to help her, and imprisoned them in a mystical circle that would summon Chthon fully to Earth. However, the Beast arrived, dressed as one of Chthon's old nemeses from the Knights of Wundagore to distract him, and seized the Darkhold before the ritual was complete. Django Maximoff crafted a doll in Wanda's image (fatefully using wood from Wundagore imbued with some of Chthon's own power), and it acted as a conduit for Wanda's soul. She regained her body while Chthon was trapped in the doll. Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch then buried the doll in an avalanche, leaving Chthon in his dimension once more.

Chthon had several plans working at once to ensure his rebirth, however. Vittorio Montesi was the latest in a long line of Montesi priests employed by the Vatican to guard against the rise of Chthon and the influence of the Darkhold. The Montesis even had special dispensation from the Vatican to marry and sire heirs, keeping their bloodline active against the forces of evil. Vittorio was sterile, however, and felt pressure to continue his family line, so he gave in to temptation and used the Darkhold to impregnate his wife. The misogynistic Vittorio thought Chthon had made sport of him when his child turned out to be a daughter, not a son like he wanted. Worse, Victoria Montesi was a lesbian, something the old-world Vittorio considered an abomination. Little did he realize this was the least of Chthon's actions.

As an adult, Victoria came to lead a team of "Darkhold Redeemers", fighting the proliferation of Darkhold spells being disseminated in the world. In time, however, they learned that Victoria was actually the child of Chthon, not Vittorio, and the Elder God impregnated her in order to be reborn on the Earthly plane. Doctor Strange contained Victoria in a time-locked stasis for months while trying to find a way to stop the rebirth. Fortunately, he was eventually successful.

Chthon resurfaced and killed the New Men at Mt. Wundagore, with no Doctor Strange to counter this new threat. Knowing about Chthon's activities, and how they had taken down most superheroes, Loki, disguised as the Scarlet Witch, helped to reform the Mighty Avengers to combat him. However, Modred successfully summoned Chthon into the body of Quicksilver and Chthon arrived, claiming that this reality would fall before him in a blink of an eye. Using Quicksilver's powers, Chthon altered the effects of the chaos cascade caused by Modred reading the Darkhold to whatever he desired. But the Mighty Avengers defeated him using teamwork.

Ant-Man used his ants to scramble Quicksilver's nerve signals, rendering him unable to remember any spells. After a goading from "Wanda" about the destruction of his world, Bruce Banner transformed into the Hulk and pounded the Chthon possessed Quicksilver, while Hank Pym spoke encouraging words to those present, reducing their belief in the Elder God's strength, weakening him further. Though Chthon managed to blast Hulk off, his host body was severely damaged and now unable to contain his power, so he left Quicksilver's body and entered Modred's body, but at the same time, Vision read one of the spells from the Darkhold, imprisoning the Elder God within the tome, thereby averting the threat.

A new member of the Darkholders, Barry Gleason, attempted to enact a ritual to resurrect Chthon using the symbiote-empowered serial killer Carnage, who he believed to be the subject of a prophecy in the Darkhold: "When the Red Slayer spills blood on sacred stone, he who sleeps shale wake and what walked once will walk again." The Darkholders' attempt to sacrifice Carnage backfired, infusing him with the Darkhold's eldritch power and compelling him to journey to a secret island in the Timor Sea, where a temple to Chthon had been built and guarded by the Broodlings of Chthon.

Carnage was able to awaken Chthon, who manifested as a blue-skinned eldritch monster and began devouring the Broodlings present. When Carnage demanded to be rewarded, Chthon casually swatted him aside and began summoning the other evil gods. However, he was confronted by Jubulile van Scotter who used the combined power of her own Darkhold-augmented symbiote, the Darkhold-augmented Raze symbiote, and the Toxin symbiote to face him in combat and ultimately banish him.

During Hydra's takeover of America, Chthon possessed Scarlet Witch again. Under possession, Wanda became a member of Hydra's Avengers. She was eventually freed from Chthon's possession by Doctor Strange during the final battle against Hydra.

When Jaine was sixteen, she was a fashion model for a trashy magazine. By eighteen, she recorded two albums for a minor studio and sold over one-hundred copies each. Eventually she got involved in the mystic arts and sold the souls of seven policemen to Zahgurim, Hell's blacksmith, in return of two living guns and a mystic suit of armor. However both items would only work if she didn't use them to shift the balance be-tween Heaven and Hell.

She eventually teamed up with Daimon Hellstrom to take down Armorer, a mystical serial killer. After the encounter Daimon invited her to hell to be his consort, the relationship ended after she learned that she wasn't the only woman Daimon had invited.

At some point in her adventures, she killed Spirits of Vengeance.

Jaine resurfaced trying to save the Anti-Christ child Anton Satan from the fallen angel Zadkiel's hench-men at Anton's office on Wall Street. They nearly escape until Zadkiel stopped her in her place. She then encountered her old flame Hellstorm and while fighting Zadkiel's soldiers, argued about the fate of Anton. The fight later got her into the presence of Ghost Rider and the Caretaker. She tried to shoot Sara with her breathing gun but couldn't because Sara was a nun. She and Hellstorm later unit-ed with both Ghost Riders Blaze and Ketch, and Sara in a plan to storm Heaven and stop Zadkiel.

When the Tower is completely aflame, its Material strength drops - 1CS each turn until it collapses. After it collapses, the ruins vanish and are replaced by the destroyed remains of the original structure that sat on that site.

  • Illusion: The Tower is only visible to those D'spayre chooses to see it. Anyone else sees it as the original structure that occupied that site.
  • Power Focus: The Tower can channel the combined mystical powers of two or more beings into a single extremely powerful spell or power.
  • Self-Repair: If the Tower is destroyed, it cannot be summoned again for 28 days, after which time it can reappear completely repaired.
  • Tower Summoning: Ability to ex¬change a targeted structure with his Tower.
TALENTS: Occult Lore

CONTACTS: Dweller in Darkness

HISTORY
The Demon known as D'Spayre was created 20,000 years ago by the Dweller-in-Darkness, using the fear originated from the sinking of Atlantis and Lemuria.

D'Spayre was encountered at the Nexus of All Realities. He captured young sorceress Jennifer Kale and the spirit of her deceased teacher, Dakimh. He tied them both to an arcane tower on the Nexus, trying to use the evil mystic energies of the tower to corrupt his prisoners so that they would use their magic powers to serve D'Spayre. D'Spayre had killed Dakimh's mentor Zhered-Na centuries ago.

However, Spider-Man and the Man-Thing fought D'Spayre. Although D'Spayre used his powers to overcome Spider-Man with fear, Spider-Man managed to knock out D'Spayre. Kale and Damikh were freed soon afterwards.

Since then, D'Spayre has recurred to more subtle plans. He decided he did not know enough about Earthlings, especially superhumans. He appears to lonely victims using his powers to make them despair; one of these victims was Jock Forrester, father of Aleytys "Lee" Forrester, who would later be a partner of Cyclops and later of Magneto.

D'Spayre urged his fellow Fear Lords to attack Earth in an attempt to gain power, but they were unsuccessful.

Spite, his sister, sought to depose him by using the Juggernaut.

D'Spayre was one of the rulers called by Magik to discuss the threat of the Archenemy.

Darkhold Redeemers - Midnight Sons

Post by Sidious »

Darkhold Redeemers

Background:
During the events of the Rise of the Midnight Sons, the demon-queen Lilith and her children, the Lilin, were released from a long period of imprisonment. In the chaos that ensued, a number of groups and individuals gathered together to combat these demons. At the same time, the Dwarf and the Other began actively manipulating people to use pages from the Darkhold, in order to gain power for their lord, Chthon. Victoria Montesi, a woman from a line of priests who safeguarded and prevented misuse of the Darkhold, began to have visions every time a page was used. After an attempt on Victoria's life by the Darkholders, Interpol, at the request of the Vatican, assigned agent Sam Buchanan to protect her. Meanwhile, John Blaze, one of those who would become the Midnight Sons, contacted Louise Hastings, an expert on the occult after a vision by another member warned that Hastings could become a target of Lilith. Hastings, with Blaze and the Ghost Rider, and Montesi and Buchanan each followed leads to the house of Donald Walsh, who had invoked the Chameleon Worm spell from the Darkhold. After successfully eradicating the Chameleon Worms, Buchanan, Hastings, and Montesi decided to stay together to investigate the use of the pages from the Darkhold. After several encounters, the group was joined by William Hastings, aka Jinx, the grandson of Louise, who possessed innate mystical powers.

Buchanan did not believe in the supernatural initially, and despite several direct encounters continued to remain skeptical. In fact, he suspected Montesi as actually being behind the events, because of her clairvoyant abilities which gave her knowledge of the events before anyone else. Based on orders from his superior, DeGuzman, who was secretly the leader of a sect of the Darkholders, Buchanan and the other Darkholders planned to use a letter-bomb threat to convince others to send in the pages to keep them out of the hands of the public. In fact, DeGuzman planned this plot in order to reassemble the book for use by his sect. With deliberate misinformation from DeGuzman, Buchanan actually brought Montesi to the Darkholders' base. After learning the truth, Buchanan helped free Montesi, while DeGuzman and the sect of the Darkholders were slaughtered by the demon-child, Diabolique.

The Redeemers were soon joined by the centuries old sorcerer, Modred the Mystic, who had his own soul tainted by the Darkhold. Shortly after that, several members of the Darkholders were slain by Switchblade, who was actually the Midnight Son, Blade, who used the Demogorge page of the Darkhold in an effort to destroy all magical beings. Hastings ultimately used another page of the Darkhold to stop Switchblade and revive his victims. Hastings was morally crushed by what she had been forced to do, and took some time off.

Montesi also used a page of the Darkhold in order to cure her friend and lover, Nash Salvato. This resulted in the being Mon-strosity being formed and attempting to kill all others Montesi encountered. Montesi managed to throw off the effects of the Darkhold and destroy the Monstrosity.

The fact that the Montesi family was supposed to be "incorruptible," and yet Victoria had used a page of the Darkhold, led Hastings to investigate Victoria's past. Hastings learned Victoria's true nature, as actually being a creation of the Darkhold, which further demoralized her. Before she could tell the truth to Victoria, Louise was slain by another Midnight Son, Morbius, who was possessed by the Lilin Bloodthirst. This occurred during the events of the Siege of Darkness, which involved the union of the demons Lilith and Zarathos. As this battle escalated, Modred sent Jinx off to the Vatican for protection, under the care of Vittorio Montesi, the father of Victoria. Modred, who also learned the truth about Victoria, also left the group during these events. Sam and Vicki, possessing minimal ability to directly combat the powerful demons, sat out the final battle against Zarathos. Shortly after this, Victoria at last learned her own true nature, as she found she was carrying the demon Chthon within her, which would then be born into reality on Earth. These events pulled her away from Buchanan, and the Redeemers dissolved permanently.

When Victoria Montesi, daughter of Louise's long time friend Vittorio, was injured in an explosion and targeted by the Darkholders, Louise joined with Victoria and Sam Buchanan to form the Darkhold Redeemers. Their first mission was to help Ghost, Blaze and the rest of the Midnight Sons defeat Lilith and her Lilim. The three of them then journeyed searching for all the lost Darkhold pages guided by the visions Victoria received whenever one was activated. When one page surfaced on the plane where Louise's estranged daughter was a flight attendance, the ensuing chaos left her daughter Caprice dead and her teenage son Jinx an orphan who then joined up with the redeemers. During the Midnight Massacre, a Demogorge possessed Blade killed most of the Midnight Sons but it was the fully human Louise that was able to use a page from the Darkhold to stop the Demogorge and resurrect all those who had been killed (including Redeemers Victoria and Modred) at the expense of her own soul. Tragically, during the Siege of Darkness there was a traitor in the group and just as Louise discovered it was a Lilin possessed Morbius that was responsible, she turned around and was brutally sliced down by Morbius (controlled by Bloothirst).

KNOWN POWERS:

  • Illusions: Excellent rank
  • Eldritch Beam/Blast: Excellent rank, from his eye
  • Molecular Conversion: Excellent rank
  • Mystic Channeling: Jinx has the ability to channel and magnify the magic of others. For each additional person with magical ability, the one casting a spell gains +1CS.
Immunity: Along with all members of his family, he is immune to the corrupting effects of the Darkhold when reading from it.

TALENTS: Student, Mystic Back-ground

CONTACTS: Jinx could call upon any of the Darkhold Redeemers or Midnight Sons.

HISTORY:
Jinx is the grandson of Louise Hastings, an expert in the occult and a mystic of limited power. It is likely that her experiences in the mystic affected her lineage, although her daughter, Caprice, never demonstrated any mystical abilities. Jinx, however, proved able to access magic to perform small feats with-out any sort of training.

Jinx's mother was killed in a struggle over of the Darkhold pages, and he came to live with his mother, Louise. Almost instantly, he became caught up in a Darkhold plot to reassemble the pages. Sam Buchanon was an agent of the FBI and was convinced by his superior, DeGuzman, leader of a Darkholder sect, to betray and bring in the Darkhold Redeemers. Jinx followed Buchanon back to a base in the southwest, where he accessed the energy of a page of the Darkhold to disperse a group of guards and free Victoria Montesi.

An ally of the Darkhold Redeemers, Blade, was temporarily corrupted by a page of the Darkhold, becoming an incarnation of the Demogorge. Modred teleported Jinx back to New Hope to prevent him from being injured in the battle against the Demogorge.

Jinx accompanied the other Redeemers when they investigated Lt. Frank Walsh after he utilized the "Troid" spell of the Darkhold. Fol-lowing this, Victoria Montesi accessed a page of the Darkhold to gain healing powers. This resulted in the summoning of the creature Monstrosity, which was drawn to follow Victoria and slaughter those it encountered. Jinx attempted to engage the Monstrosity, but was stabbed in the chest by it. He was mortally wounded, but Victoria appeared and used her magics to heal him instantly. It was at this time that Jinx began training as an apprentice to Modred, much to the consternation of the other Redeemers. Jinx demonstrated the ability to focus mystic energy from his right eye while directly participating in the struggle against Spider-X, another Darkhold page user.

Modred's training allowed Jinx to participate in the "Siege of Darkness", amplifying Modred's power to oppose the forces of the demon Lilith. Internal strife and misunderstandings among the Midnight Sons did briefly turn Jinx against Modred, but they soon resolved this. Jinx accompanied the others to the jungles of Central America to locate the Blood member Truth-Sayer. They succeeded, although Truth-Sayer was incinerated by the Fallen member Metarchus. Following this, in order to protect him against the final battle against Lilith and Zarathos, Jinx was sent to the Vatican to remain under the care of Vittorio Montesi.

BACKGROUND
Real Name: Victoria “Vicki” Montesi
Occupation: Former medical student, occult investigator.
Legal Status: Italian Citizen, with no criminal record,
Identity: Known
Other Known Aliases: None
Place of Birth: Italy
Marital Status: Single
Known Relatives: Monsignor Vittorio Montessi (“father”), Chthon (father), Giacomo, Giuseppe, Marcello, and Paulo Montesi (ancestors)
Base of Operations: Formerly Louise Hastings’ mansion, New Hope, Connecticut; Rome, Italy
Past Group Affiliations: Darkhold Redeemers, Midnight Sons
Present Group Affiliation:

KNOWN POWERS
Darkhold Sense: Vicki has a Monstrous rank ability to sense the activation of the Darkhold curses. For instance, if a curse turned its victim into a mass of worms, she would have a sudden vision of people becoming worms, and would be uneasy around plates of spaghetti. If she makes a successful Power FEAT, she can also sense the geographic location at which the curse is was triggered. If she fails, she receives a horrible vision, and simply knows that - somewhere - something terrible has happened. The Judge should roll again in a few hours to see if she picks up the trail.

TALENTS: Vicki is a trained doctor with the Medicine talent. As a Montesi, she has +3 CS to resist Darkhold spells. She is also multilingual (English, Italian).

CONTACTS: Doctor Strange, Father Montesi, Midnight Sons

HISTORY:
After an explosion at her apartment which crippled her girlfriend, she ended up as a target for the Darkholders. She would soon get her own body guard, Interpol agent named Sam Buchanan, and later meet up with old family friend Dr. Louise Hasting. Together, during an encounter with Ghost Rider against Lilith and her Lilin and an errant Darkhold page delivered by a dwarf, they would form the Darkhold Redeemers and join Ghost Rider and the rest of the Midnight Sons in their final battle with Lilith in the Arctic. She searched with the Redeemers for all the lost pages of the Darkhold which were mysteriously popping up. It was during these searches that she ran across the Scarlet Witch and Agatha Harkness and first learned of the Malachi Prophesy. "Child born of no man and a woman marked by sin. Daughter becomes mother and the dark return will begin."

At one point she even came in possession of a Darkhold page for healing and invoked it at a terrible price. For each life she saved, a vicious monster also killed someone else in exchange and it followed the path of each letter the Redeemers had found. When Vicky tried to heal her quadriplegic and comatose lover, Nash. However Nash spirit refused the help she offered at the expense of others and Victoria came to her senses and (with Nash's spirit's help) rejected the gift the page had given her. During the Midnight Massacre, everyone was stunned when Demogorge, a being which only kills supernatural beings and takes their power, struck her down to get to Modred the Mystic. Months later she would join with Midnight Sons again during the Siege of Darkness against Lilith and a resurrected Zarathos.

It was during the Siege of Darkness that Victoria discovered from her father the truth behind her birth and realized that the Malachi Prophesy was about her and that she was pregnant with Chthon. Dr. Strange put her in a slowed state to retard the progress of the pregnancy until he was able to properly deal with the situation. After Chthon's rebirth was prevented, Victoria was taken away by the Midwife and its unclear what happened to her.

Equipment: The Darkhold

Background:
Billions of years ago, the evil Elder God known as Chthon was forced to flee the Earth from Demogorge, the God-Eater. Before doing so, he put into writing all his evil works and spells on indestructible parchment. Originally written on flesh before being transcribed to stone and later a collection of parchments often referred to as the Chthon Scrolls; the pages were later bound together into a tome as "the Darkhold." Also called the Shiatra Book of the Damned, or The Book of Sins, the Darkhold has served as the source for other spellbooks, such as the Necronomicon. Chthon left these scrolls on Earth so that it may always serve as a conduit to the Earth-Realm for Chthon's influence and power.

Despite that fact, the Logomancer theorized that the Darkhold, but also the Necronomicon, the Oracles of Zoroaster and other mystic scrolls and books were in fact just imperfect copies of the ancient writings etched on the walls of R'llyeh produced by ancient beings.

Humans first found the Darkhold during the Pre-Cataclysmic Era, when the lands of Atlantis and Lemuria were still above the waves. When the warrior Kull slew the dark sorcerer Thulsa Doom, Doom's followers, the Darkholders, utilized the Darkhold to create the first vampire, Varnae. Varnae had been mortally wounded in battle with Kull. Varnae consumed one of the Darkholders who attempted to command him, and began creating other vampires. Some surviving Darkholders managed to make off with the Darkhold before Atlantis sank. Sources place the rise of Kull and the fall of Thulsa Doom some time circa 18,500 BC.

When Atlantis sank, Varnae went into hibernation and did not revive until circa 10,000 BC. He found that some parchments of the Darkhold had been left behind in the Flaming Mountains of Khorasha and attempted to recover them. In an altercation with Conan, Red Sonja, and the sorcerer Zula, Varnae controlled the bat-like humanoids the Afterlings. Zula used the Darkhold against Varnae casting an incomplete incantation that shocked him. Zula apologized, explaining the spell as written was incomplete: "I'm sorry the incantation ended where it did-and only hurt Lord Varnae, rather than destroying him." The spell appeared to Zula in Stygian - "Shemek Iref Wenek Tjhen Inek It-Ek Chthon Djedeni Emm-Maat Wenen Taeei Hemet Ankh-Ek Isheset Antioo Djedte Nes Sep Iree NEn Renek Anhkhu Wi-Im Valka!"

Zula also used the Darkhold against the Set-worshipping sorcerer Thugra Khotan. Later Red Sonja and Zula traveled to Zamboula, which served as the western part of the Turanian empire. To-trasmek, a priest of the deity Hanuman (not to be confused with the simian Hindu deity called Hanuman), who had been searching for the scrolls for years came into possession of the Darkhold. Zula recovered the Darkhold and used the scrolls, however, and use it to transport himself and Sonja away. Zula noted that the scroll disappeared as a result of using the spell.

At some point, Mephisto imprisoned a demon called Darklove into a page of the Darkhold.

Later historians in the Vatican would note that at some point the Chthon scrolls of the Chthon were taken East during the Hyborian Age. After the Hyborian Age, Egyptians, Bablyonians, and Hebrews came to possess the Darkhold scrolls. In circa 500 A.D., Morgan Le Fay bound the scrolls into book form for the first time. Morgan and the Darkholders attempted to use the Darkhold to summon Chthon to do their bidding, but he proved much too powerful for them. Although unable to send him back to his realm, Morgan managed to imprison Chthon's spirit under-neath Mount Wundagore. Morgan's lover Magnus, having witnessed true evil, betrayed Morgan and stole the Darkhold, sealing it within the Tower of the Darkhold on the Isle of Wight. Magnus enchanted the tower so that no one with evil intentions may enter.

During the time of King Arthur, a well meaning mystic named Modred entered the tower seeking to use the Darkhold as a force for good. The Other, Chthon's avatar on Earth, spoke out to Modred and demanded that he sacrifice his soul in exchange for the power he sought. Modred initially resisted, believing that doing so would be the only way to attain the Darkhold's powers, but relented when The Other began to attack his bride-to-be Janice. Having sacrificed his very soul, Modred was placed into a centuries long, death-like slumber. Saint Brendan was sent by the Church to do battle with the evil inadvertently unleashed from the Darkhold. He would later scatter the Darkhold's pages throughout the world.

In 1149, a heretical monk named Aelfric had recollected the pages of the Darkhold. The monk was burnt at the stake, the Darkhold with him. However, the Darkhold reformed itself, and was purchased by a trader, who was then murdered.

By the 1600's, the Vatican came to possess the Darkhold. Dracula sent a thief to acquire it for him, but Cagliostro slew the thief and took it for himself. At some point the vampire Lord Ruthven may have possessed the Darkhold. Taboo, the sorcerer, claims to have found the Darkhold in an old Balkan castle. He apparently did so no later than 1958.

Before late 1930, Gregor Russoff acquired the Darkhold. He would later copy much of its content into the journal of his ancestor, and used it as a journal for himself. Accounts vary as to how he came to possess it. Two accounts say he purchased the tome, but others say that he took it from the sorcerer Taboo. In any event, when he read of the origin of lyncanthropy in the Darkhold, Gregor himself contracted lycanthropy. Gregor, whose ancestor Grigori had also been a werewolf, would later pass the curse on to others in his family: his son Jack Russell, and his grand-daughter, Nina Price. During this time, Dracula shadowed Russoff.

Possibly circa 1958, Gregor Russoff attempted to raise Chthon hoping he could cure him of lycanthropy. Chthon struck out at Russoff, seeming to strike him dead. The High Evolutionary and Magnus then managed to defeat Chthon. Russoff evidently survived somehow. Presumably, the revived Gregor Russoff recovered the Darkhold and somehow managed to hide his activities from the High Evolutionary and Magnus for some time. He was later slain by villagers no earlier than approximately 20 years ago.

Later, Russoff's son Jack also be-came a werewolf. Recovering the Darkhold from Miles Blackgar, he gave it to a Father Joquez to trans-late. Aelfric's ghost possessed Jacquez. At the end of this struggle, Russell erroneously thought that the Darkhold was destroyed. Later, Russoff travelled to Transylvanian with the Indian woman Topaz to visit Russoff Manor. There they found Gregor Russoff's diary. Dracula came to possess the diary and left it behind in a blizzard in the Alps (since the diary contained a copy of the Montesi Formula to destroy vampires). However, Morgan le Fay later recovered the diary.

At some point Doctor Doom found a part of the Darkhold that allowed him to cast a spell to access Belasco's Limbo.

During the Rise of the Midnight Sons - when Lilith and her off-spring, the Lilin were released into the world once more - the Darkhold went missing from the Vatican. At that time, the Darkhold Dwarf began appearing to people around the world, giving them small black envelopes containing pages from the Darkhold and enticing them to use its forbidden spells to fulfill their wishes for power, immortality, riches, and revenge. Victoria Montesi - reluctant heir to to the Montesi responsibility of safeguarding the Darkhold, as well as the prophesied Montesi "incorruptibility" - began having visions as the pages were used. When she herself was attacked by the Darkholders, she resolved to hunt down the pages of the book with the help of Interpol agent Sam Buchanan and occultist Dr. Louise Hastings. These Darkhold Redeemers (as Lilith once called them) managed to collect a number of the pages before they eventually disbanded.

In modern times, the Darkholders took interest in Carnage, based on the prophecy in the Darkhold that says "When the Red Slayer spills blood on sacred stone, He Who Sleeps shall wake and what walked will walk once again." Cult member Barry Gleason orchestrated Cletus Kasady's meeting with them, and the Darkholders attempted to sacrifice Carnage to awaken Chthon. This resulted in Carnage instead being empowered by Chthon, stealing the cult's copy of the Darkhold, and attempting to use it to summon the Elder God. Carnage and Chthon were stopped by Victoria Montesi, Toxin, Man-Wolf, and Jubulile van Scotter; with Victoria taking the copy of the Darkhold to the Children of Midnight.

Baron Helmut Zemo used the Darkhold to enhance Blackout's powers in order to cover Manhattan in a shroud of Darkforce shadows.

THE DARKHOLDERS
The Cult of the Darkholders has existed since humans first discovered the Darkhold. They seek to restore the Darkhold to its former power and, through its magical powers, gain control over humanity.

Among the past goals of the Darkholders was the compilation of
its parchment pages into book form. As fragments are found, these may be used to raise the powers of the Darkholders and further their attempts to regain possession of the book.

The typical Darkholder possesses the mystical level of Adept. As such, they possess at least eight spells of Excellent or higher rank, two of which are Incredible (40) or higher rank.

As Adepts, the Darkholders are at the lowest rank of sorcerer who could normally gain special attention from otherdimensional entities.

Known Spells:
Linguistics: The Darkhold is automatically readable by any being who possesses the tome.

"By the Darkhold's Foul Tree ": This entreaty taps Chthon's powers.
