HISTORY
The original Human Torch began his existence in 1939 in the laboratory of Professor Phineas T. Horton, one of the pioneers in the field of artificial intelligence and robotics. The culmination of Horton's research was an android who mimicked virtually all of the functions of a human being, including independent thought, but was composed entirely of synthetic materials.

The one flaw in the android's design concerned the photoelectric solar cells called Horton Cells which covered every square inch of his body and served as his power source. The cells were too volatile and caused the epidermis of the android to burst into flame upon contact with air but without harming the android itself.

Horton revealed the Torch's existence to the public at a press conference in November 1939, at which he demonstrated how the Torch would burst into flame if he introduced a small amount of oxygen into the transparent container in which he was confined. The news media proclaimed the Torch to be a potential menace, and so after a presidential order, Horton buried the android in his supposedly airtight tube within cement until such time as he could find a way either to prevent the android from bursting into flame or learn how to control its flame.

There was a slow leak in the tube, however, and eventually enough oxygen entered so that the android's flame ignited explosively, permitting him to escape. Wreaking havoc in innocent exploration of his environment, the android, inaccurately dubbed the Human Torch, soon realized the panic he was causing and, unable to control his flaming power, doused his flame in a swimming pool. In his infancy, the Human Torch was duped by a crook named Anthony Sardo into committing crimes. Realizing what he was doing was wrong, the Torch confronted Sardo and during the fight was doused in nitrogen which was the catalyst that allowed him to control his flame from that point on.

In attempting to bring Sardo to justice, the criminal was killed in battle. When Horton suggested that the two use his powers to obtain fame and fortune, the Torch rejected this idea, leaving Horton's home a flaming inferno which seemingly killed the scientist. However he would resurface later, alive and well.

In the year 1940, the Human Torch began earning a reputation for himself as a champion of justice. He had a number of solo adventures including a clash with Martians, mad scientist Dr. Manyac, and others. He gained an early ally in a police officer named Pete Johnson and began using the name "Jim Hammond" as an alias. The Torch soon decided to take up a job as a New York police officer.

After a number of assignments, the Human Torch became lonely and sought out Professor Horton and asked for his advice. Horton told him of Fred Raymond, an asbestos expert, and his wife Nora. Both were terminally ill and raising their son Thomas "Toro" Raymond. When visiting the Raymond home to learn what Horton was alluding to, the Torch found the Raymonds being terrorized by the criminal known as Asbestos Lady. The Torch fought off Asbestos Lady and her minions. Noticing that Toro had slept through the entire battle, the Raymonds told him how their son was apparently immune to fire. After the meeting with the Raymonds, the Torch soon left, vowing to keep a secret eye on them in case Asbestos Lady threatened them again.

Soon after his induction into the police force, the Human Torch had the first of many clashes with the Atlantean mutant known as the Sub-Mariner. Their battle raged across New York City and eventually the Sub-Mariner gained the upper hand when trapping the Torch in an airtight container. Ultimately, the Sub-Mariner was convinced to let the Torch go and leave by police woman Betty Dean.

The Torch soon began to question what it was like to be human and sought out his creator. Finding an old photograph in the ruins of the place of his birth, the Torch visited a former colleague of his "father", Fred Raymond, and decided to visit the family again. By this time, Fred was distraught over the fact that his wife Nora was deathly ill and that his son Thomas had gained mysterious flame powers. Somehow thinking the Torch was to blame, Raymond ordered the Torch to leave his home.

The Torch soon found himself working with an unlikely ally, the Sub-Mariner, to stop an invasion of Imperial Japanese forces who were attempting to dig a tunnel to Alaska. This alliance proved to be short-lived as the Sub-Mariner soon attacked New York City again, but was brought down by the Human Torch and Captain America.

Hearing a radio report about the death of Toro's parents in a train wreck, the Torch suspected it to be the work of Asbestos Lady and rushed to Toro's aid after hearing he was adopted by a local circus owner. On the way, the Torch was confronted by Asbestos Lady and her minions, who managed to douse his flame and toss him into a tanker filled with water. Despite being trapped in water, the Torch was able to flame on part of his body to create enough heat for the steaming water to burst open the tanker. Asbestos Lady and her men attempted to escape but were captured by the Torch and turned over to the police.

The Human Torch soon was reintroduced to Thomas Raymond, at Pop's Circus as Toro the Flaming Boy. When the circus strongman Samson stole a rayon gun, the Torch and Toro teamed up to return it.

Taking in Toro as his ward, the Torch was teaching him how to use his powers. The Human Torch and Toro clashed with many foes such as the Brain, Blackjack, the Hag, Dr. Smart, and arsonist Hawk Rivers. By this time, Toro had allied himself with a members of Bucky's Sentinels of Liberty fan club to form the Young Allies. The Torch often worked alongside Captain America to assist the Young Allies and get them out of trouble.

On December 7th, 1941 American authorities learned of a joint attack on American soil by Imperial Japanese Navy, subversive Atlantean, and Nazi forces. One of these attacks was on Pearl Harbor, and the Human Torch and Toro were sent on this mission to help turn back the invasion. It was a day that would stand in American history as the aftermath would end with the United States officially entering World War II. So horrified by the senseless destruction caused by the Japanese forces, the Human Torch and Toro fought back in the days following the attack on Pearl Harbor, attacking Japan directly slaying Japanese Admiral Nodope in the process.

Returning to the United States, on December 22, 1941 the Human Torch and Toro were assigned in secret as part of the security for Dr. Anderson, one of the men involved in Operation Rebirth the experiment the created Captain America. When Anderson was captured by Nazi spies, he was forced to use his knowledge to empower their agent Master Man. Tracking Anderson to the secret Nazi lab, the two heroes were too late to stop the creation of Master Man. The super-strong Nazi easily bested the two heroes and the Nazis fled after shooting Dr. Anderson. Rushing Anderson to a hospital, the Torch and Toro soon met with Captain America and Bucky.

Discovering that the Nazis were plotting to attack a ship carrying British Prime Minister Winston Churchill to the United States, they rushed to the scene. There, with the assistance of the Sub-Mariner, the heroes stopped the Nazis, and when Master Man's powers failed him, captured the villain and turned him over to the authorities. After his rescue, Winston Churchill suggest-ed that the group band together, suggesting they call themselves the Invaders. In the aftermath of that battle, President Roosevelt officially sanctioned the group.

With the Invaders, the Torch clashed with foes such as Brain Drain, U-Man, and Basil Frankenstein creation. When the Invaders were captured by the Red Skull and brainwashed, Bucky formed the Liberty Legion to counter his friends, eventually freeing them from the Skull's control.

Returning to England with the Invaders, the Torch clashed with Baron Blood, and fell in love with Jacqueline Falsworth. He eventually rescued her from Baron Blood but she did not seem to see his feelings for her. Following Baron Blood's destruction, she required medical attention. Rushing Jacqueline to a military hospital, a blood transfusion from the Torch empowered Jacqueline and she joined the group as Spitfire. The Invaders then clashed with the Face, but were rescued by Goldstein, who managed to transform himself into the Golem of Jewish lore, and the Crusaders.

Soon after the Crusaders incident, the Invaders were given a head-quarters in England within Big Ben. Torch, Captain America, and the Sub-Mariner were then given a mission to capture three Nazi agents: the Hyena, the Shark and Agent Axis. The Torch was dispatched to capture the Hyena, but was captured by the villain who extracted some of the Torch's blood to use to empower Nazi agents. Before the Hyena could eliminate the hero, he was teleported away by the cosmic being known as the Grandmaster. Finding himself transported to Nazi-occupied France with Captain America and Sub-Mariner, the three heroes were used in a cosmic competition between the Grandmaster and the future warlord Kang and pitted against three of the modern era Avengers, Yellowjacket, Black Panther and the Vision. The Avengers easily defeated the three wartime heroes, thanks to the Vision's phasing powers. As the Avengers attempted to explain to the three Invaders what was happening, they were whisked back to their own time. The Grandmaster then returned the Invaders back to where their three foes had met and easily defeated them. The Torch recovered his stolen blood. The Torch's memories of his battle against the Avengers soon faded.

Though the original Captain America and his sidekick Bucky were seemingly killed in action, secret replacements for them served alongside the Torch and the rest of the Invaders in the All-Winners Squad during the postwar years. In 1949, an American criminal the Crime Boss, seeking to destroy the Torch, obtained a chemical known as Solution X-R from Russians. He sprayed the solution over the Torch and Toro, dousing their flame and paralyzing them. The criminals then buried the Torch beneath the Nevada desert. However, they had accidentally chosen to bury him beneath a future atomic testing site.

In late 1953, the blast of an atomic bomb dropped on the site freed the Torch, and the radiation reactivated his flame. The Torch resumed his crime-fighting career and his partnership with Toro. But in late 1955, the Human Torch sensed that the radiation from the bomb was causing him to lose control of his flame and that he would be dangerous to others. After bidding farewell to Toro, the Torch burned his way underground of the Southwest desert to deactivate.

Following the defeat and deactivation of the original Torch, his corpse was split into two chronal duplicates by the time traveler Immortus.

The first duplicate was discovered by the criminal genius called the Mad Thinker, one of the world's leading experts on robotics and androids. Using his knowledge of androids, the Thinker restored most of the Torch's original synthetic tissue and nervous system. The Thinker partially restored the android's memories but coerced the Torch into battling the Thinker's enemies, the Fantastic Four (which counted a new Human Torch among their number). On realizing the implications of what the Thinker wanted him to do, the Torch sacrificed his artificial life to save the Fantastic Four from a sneak attack by the Thinker's computer Quasimodo. The Thinker fled, and the Fantastic Four left the Torch's body in the Thinker's laboratory in Nevada.

The other duplicate was recovered by the robot known as Ultron who sought to use the Torch as a vessel of revenge against his creator Henry Pym and the super-hero group known as the Avengers. This recreation of the Human Torch became known as the Vision and ultimately became a long-time member of the Avengers.

The Mad Thinker buried the Torch in a nondescript grave. The hero team Avengers West Coast revived the Human Torch when in the course of investigating the Vision's origin. They invited the revived Torch to join their team, and he gratefully accepted.

However, he served for only a short time before taking a personal leave of absence, during which time he lost his powers to save the life of his aged comrade, Lady Crichton. He then semi-retired from adventuring and served as Head of Security for Oracle Inc. Hammond later returned to join the Avengers' West Coast branch as a reserve member, and served alongside the team on a couple of adventures.

Months later, he agreed to lead the re-launched hero team Heroes for Hire with Iron Fist and Cage, behind the scenes in an office capacity as CEO of Oracle, Inc., Namor's business representation in the States that acted as parent company for the Heroes. After spearheading several adventures, Hammond was revealed to be used by the villainous Master to destroy the Heroes for Hire, although the Heroes triumphed over their foe and rescued Hammond, who recovered. During this time, Hammond recovered his ability to throw fireballs, although the full extent of his powers remain lost. When the unscrupulous Stark-Fujikawa Corporation bought Oracle and began restructuring Heroes for Hire, Hammond resigned.

Hammond returned as part of the New Invaders, taking the young android Tara under his wing. He ended up sacrificing his life to save this new "Lady Torch." The majority of the Invaders left the team after this.

In the months following the Secret Invasion of Earth, Hammond's inert body was discovered in the UN Building by retired Chinese scientist, Zhang Chin. Chin's agent, the Man with No Face, recovered the body and brought it back to Taipei where Chin modified Hammond's DNA and cell structure into a virus. Chin intended to use this virus to eradicate half the world's population so that resources could be better controlled. This incident prompted Captain America (Bucky Barnes) and the Sub-Mariner to go to China to rescue their old teammate's remains. They succeed in stopping Chin and made sure that Hammond received a proper burial.

Later exhumed by the Mad Thinker, the Torch was used in experiments involving the "Horton Cells" that made up his body and in the process was revived as a living weapon that the Thinker intended to sell to A.I.M. Though set on a course for destruction, the Torch was stopped by his formerly deceased ex-sidekick Toro, and the Thinker's control was lifted, though the inter-action with rogue Horton Cells developed by the Thinker led to the Torch's body degrading. Not wanting to sit around waiting to die, the Torch assisted Toro in finding answers about his parents, leading the duo to South America and the Nazi colony of New Berlin.

Torch later joined his fellow Invaders member Namor at Utopia to fix a section of the island. Hammond then questioned his own usefulness in today's modern world. When Anole and Rockslide asked him if he killed Hitler he answered that he did.

When Steve Rogers became America's new Top Cop, he formed a secret team of Avengers to perform the missions the Avengers could not without tarnishing their image. When the team changed roster, Cap wanted Jim to join, along with Venom, Giant-Man, and Captain Britain. Unfortunately, he was badly damaged on his first mission against the Father and his Descendants, a group of machines based on Hammond, and left comatose in a stasis tube at the team's HQ, the Lighthouse, while repairing.

He was later freed by the Black Ant, an agent of the Descendants, and finished being repaired by the Father, who convinced him to join his side. He then led an army of robots during a raid on New York, with the goal of forcibly assimilating the human race through the use of nano-technology and give the control of the world to the machines, robots and cyborgs.

After Captain Britain made him come to his senses, Jim fought against the Descendants, and when Hawkeye couldn't, he destroyed the Orb of Necromancy, the artifact which gave life to the Descendants. Jim flew away, with the weight on his conscience that he killed an entire race.

Jim relocated to the small town of Blaketon. He kept a low profile as a garage mechanic until Tanalth the Pursuer confronted him to recover the information of the location of one of the fragments of the Gods' Whisperer. He was almost defeated by the Pursuer and killed after she recovered the information she needed, but was saved by the arriving Captain America and Winter Soldier. With their help, Jim was saved from his attackers, and they decided to reform the Invaders in order to rescue Namor from Hala, the Kree homeworld, and prevent the aliens from using the Whisperer.

As soon as they got to Hala with the help of the original Vision, the Invaders were ambushed by the Pursuer Corps and later forced to fight the Whisperer-controlled Ikaris. By faking his death, the Winter Soldier managed to free the captured Vision and distract Tanalth long enough for Captain America and the Human Torch to subdue the Kree soldiers present in the battle while Namor fought Ikaris. The Vision teleported to get help from the Eternals and recover the Whisperer. After that, the Invaders returned to Earth and later disbanded. Captain America confronted Jim regarding his identity crisis, and offered him a place in the ranks of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Agent Hammond had several encounters with the Squadron Supreme. In their final confrontation, Nighthawk fired some darts at him which were intended to depower him. Instead, Hammond's powers suffered a drastic change; he could no longer flame on, but still retained the ability to emit radiation.

Speaking to Namor months later, he said that he was no longer the Human Torch (and nor did he care, stating that the world didn't need two of them, with Johnny Storm still around), but more like a "human reactor." Most importantly, he was still a human being, despite his body being artificial.

Group Build: JL-Axis

JLAxis

Background:
The JL-Axis is an alternate version of the Justice League of America from New Earth. On their Earth, Earth-10, Germany won World War II, and soon after the Nazi party took over the entire world with Adolf Hitler still alive as acting Führer. The JL-Axis acts as super powered agents of the party. One of the traits of this Earth's society is that people are separated by their genes. Those with the strongest are taken away to breeding centers where they are forced to mate, while those with the weakest genes are killed in mass genocides.

When Monarch began to seek out super powered beings on each earth to create an army to battle the Monitors, he had Viza Aziv, Fore-runner, a native to Earth-48, travel to alternate Earths to scout potential members. Given that her own humanoid species was wiped out in an analogous act of genocide when it waged war against the other nine inhabited planets of her Earth's solar system, Forerunner is disgusted with the underlying philosophy of this world. She attacks members of a Nazi contingent engaging in ethnic cleansing (an outgrowth of the Nazi Party's policy of eugenics) in Kansas, and attracts the attention of the JL-Axis. She manages to defeat the entire team, and Monarch arrives to offer them a position in his army.

HISTORY
Rocketed to Earth as a baby from the dying world of Krypton, Kal-L landed in the occupied Sudetenland in 1938. From the rocket that carried him, Nazi scientists reverse-engineered the technology to win the war, and Overman became the hero of "a utopia built on human suffering". He became affiliated with the JLAxis. However, his love of his duties was tempered by the guilt he carried. Eventually, Nazi scientists succeeded in seeding Overman's genetic material with two human children. One of them became a monster called Antihuman, while the other became Overgirl. Overman became fond of Overgirl and came to regard her as his cousin.

During the Final Crisis, Overgirl went missing. In the course of looking for her, he was contacted by Monitor Zillo Valla with an offer: if he helped her find a way to save the universe, she would help him find his cousin. He accepted her terms.

On the adventure that followed, he helped save several worlds from the crashing form of the Echo of Midnight. When Zillo Valla's craft crashed on Earth-51, she asked him to take her to her quarters. However, this was a ruse, and she used his blood to revitalize herself and her craft.

Overman survived and attempted to attack Valla, but was stopped by Billy Batson, who told him that Valla had acted only to save the ship. Shortly after, he joined his fellow Supermen in attacking Mandrakk's destroyer.

While he survived the adventure, he was unable to find out what happened to his cousin as Valla was killed before being able to inform him of her fate. Overman ultimately learned of his cousin's fate from The Question, and joined in the final strike against Mandrakk alongside the Supermen of the Multiverse.

CONTACTS: Apokolips, Darkseid’s Elite

HISTORY
Kalibak is the first-born son of Darkseid and Suli. His mother Suli was killed by Desaad, acting under orders from Kalibak's grandmother Queen Heggra. Kalibak became a legendary warrior, and often serves as Darkseid's second-in-command. After Darkseid broke the pact of peace with New Genesis, the rival planet of Kalibak's home Apokolips, he aided his father in the resulting battles.

Kalibak was often pitted against Orion, and after numerous clashes they learned that they were half-brothers. This fueled Kalibak's hatred of Orion to new levels, for Darkseid clearly valued Orion over his first-born.

At one point, Kalibak was desperate enough to confront Orion without Darkseid's consent. Kalibak's scheme fell apart, and he killed his accomplice Desaad, also a servant of Darkseid, to cover his tracks. Darkseid was not pleased when he found out, and he reduced his son to a pile of ash. After enough time had passed Darkseid resurrected Kalibak, hoping the boy had learned a lesson.

Kalibak later spent some time in an Apokolips prison, on Darkseid's orders. Darkseid was on Earth when Orion invaded Apokolips. Justeen, a servant of Desaad, released Kalibak to battle Orion yet again. Kalibak was swiftly subdued, but did not care much as Orion left to battle Darkseid and Kalibak hoped to gain power as a result.

During the universe wide Genesis incident, Apokoliptian forces, including Kalibak, invaded Earth. However, Kalibak and his small squad of Parademons were defeated by Hard Drive of the Young Heroes.

He was recently killed by Infinity-Man, who had been murdering the residents of Apokolips and New Genesis as an agent of the Source Wall. During the Final Crisis, Kalibak was reborn in a human body along with the rest of the New Gods of Apokolips. Once the Evil Factory resumed its work, Kalibak was given a new tiger-man body, and an army of tiger warriors to serve as his personal force. During the superheroes assault on Bludhaven, Kalibak lead his tiger-men in the defense of Command-D, battling Tawky Tawny of the Marvel Family. He managed to beat Tawny to unconsciousness, but was distracted when Shazam called the lightning down on Mary Marvel, who was possessed by Desaad. The distraction allowed Tawny to regain consciousness and slash Kalibak across the chest, mortally wounding the New God. Kalibak ordered his tiger-soldiers to help him, but they refused, saying only the strong lead.

Commanding Glorious Godfrey to retrieve the Chaos Sliver from Earth, he instead received an ornament that emitted a similar energy signature in order to fuel the Chaos Cannon, to which was pleased.

Preying to his father, Kalibak loaded and fired the Chaos Cannon in the name of Darkseid, destroying an entire moon. Recharging the cannon, he now targeted a populated planet which destruction will nourish Apokolips, but was interrupted by an intruder who was behind the Chaos Cannon's power source. He confronted the invader but was nonetheless defeated before his father arrived.

Kalibak recovered and once again engaged against Batman before the latter transported him out the battle into a distance part of Apokolips. When he returned was too late as Batman and his allies already escaped Apokolips. However, Cyborg's inability to close the Boom Tube left the door open for Kalibak who followed them to Earth with the purpose of killing them. A goal he almost succeeded in until he was confronted by a revived Damian who possessed a new array of powers that allowed him to overpower Kalibak and send him back to Apokolips.

After the Furies' defeat and the birth of Apokolips' Deathspawn, Kalibak arrived to join Apokolips against its war on Earth.

Commanded by the Doyenne Barda, both Gods were massacring the humans on Amazonia when they were faced by Jimmy Olsen who quickly defeated Barda before being knocked down and ravaged by Kalibak, who discovered the boy is a New God. However, since he bested the one who defeated Barda, he demanded to be the one leading her, engaging against an enraged Barda which made her flee and hide.

Kalibak later leaded the attack against the last survivors of Earth, slaying everything he saw until Superman charged against him to save the remaining survivors from Apokolips. After the Earth was devoured, Kalibak stood at his father's side while he proclaimed that they must prepare for what comes next.

Darkseid sent Steppenwolf to summon Kalibak for the battle against the Anti-Monitor, to which he joined his father alongside the forces of Apokolips in their battle on Earth. The war initiated, he battled against his sister until she gouged his eyes, blinding him. The battle raged until his father summoned Death to aid him, but the balance was shifted and the Anti-Monitor used Darkseid's weapon against him, ending his life.

Leaderless, the surviving Apokoliptians turned their attention towards the humans, deciding to destroy them in name of retribution for his father.

CONTACTS: Inhumans

HISTORY
Karnak Mander-Azur is the second son of an Inhuman priest and philosopher named Mander and an ocean biologist named Azur. They sent their first son, Triton, into the Terrigen Mist when he was an infant, rendering him incapable of functioning outside an aquatic environment. Thus, they pleaded with the Genetic Council to raise Karnak without Terrigen mutation. Karnak was enrolled in his father's religious seminary in the Tower of Wisdom, where he trained in various physical and mental disciplines until he was eighteen years old; meanwhile, at some point Azur died in a mysterious undersea mishap. Karnak also fathered a son with an unrevealed woman named Leer at an unknown period of time.

Karnak was with the Inhuman Royal Family when Crystal brought the Human Torch to their hidden headquarters, from where they searched for their queen, Medusa. When he met the youth he introduced himself by throwing him over his shoulder in a display of Inhuman skill. When Johnny awoke, Gorgon had returned with Medusa, and it was revealed that the Torch was not an Inhuman as Crystal had thought. After Gorgon and Triton fought with him, Johnny burned his way out of the hideout to alert the other members of the Fantastic Four.

Along with the rest of the House of Agon, led by Black Bolt, Karnak fought with the Fantastic Four - initiating the first attack by chopping off a piece of wall and throwing it at The Thing - until Crystal appeared and announced that Triton had been taken by the Seeker. Karnak and his fellow Inhumans soon surrounded Lockjaw, who teleported them back to Attilan.

There, Black Bolt faced off against his traitorous brother, Maximus, and quickly took his crown back by force and reclaimed leadership of the Inhumans, but the Fantastic Four appeared moments later, having followed the Seeker back to the refuge. While Johnny Storm and Crystal ran to each other, Black Bolt and Mister Fantastic argued, as Maximus fired his atmo-gun, intending to destroy all of humanity. When his weapon didn’t work, Medusa deduced that it proved Inhumans and humans were of the same race, which infuriated Maximus. He went out of control and reversed his machine, creating a Negative Barrier around Attilan that trapped Karnak and the rest of the Inhumans inside, while the Fantastic Four narrowly escaped.

While they remained trapped, Karnak became obsessed with breaking the barrier using his skills, but he only succeeded in injuring his hand. Eventually, Black Bolt revealed his secret, that the use of his voice was lethally destructive, and he soon used its power to destroy the barrier that imprisoned them. The Inhumans' Council of Elders soon decreed that the Royal Family would disperse and go into human society to learn more of it, while the rest of the Inhumans rebuilt Attilan. Black Bolt agreed, and led them out.

Following the destruction of Attilan when Black Bolt was confronted by Thanos, and the spread of the Terrigen Mists upon the entire face of Earth, Karnak was left mentally scarred and begun tearing up the Upper West Side of Manhattan, babbling and sobbing uncontrollably. He was subdued by the Avengers and placed in custody at the Avengers Tower, where he explained how the recent events truly affected the Inhumans.

When he was pondering the reason for Black Bolt to spread the Terrigen Mists, and what would happen next, Karnak had an epiphany in which he finally saw "the fault in all things." He told Medusa, who was present during his interrogation that she needed to forget everything she thought she knew, ignore the instincts and forget the past; otherwise, all would be lost. Following this revelation, in which he stated it was too late for him to unlearn a lifetime of error, Karnak shattered the window from his containment cell and jumped out of the Stark Tower, falling to his death and killing himself.

However, Karnak was a distant relative of the NuHuman Lineage, whose body contained the consciousnesses of every deceased from his genetic line. Karnak found himself inside Lineage's body, which he thought was Hell, and there he tried to convince some dead Inhumans to help him escape, but failed.

Meanwhile, Lineage became Medusa's adviser when she made the kingdom of New Attilan from the ruins of Attilan, though he planned to betray her. Karnak decided to break out of Hell on his own, but found an ally in the Capo of Ennilux, who was consumed by Lineage in order to learn how to use the Inhuman Codex. Karnak learned from him how Lineage had been able to defeat both Medusa and Gorgon.

Karnak and the Capo then battled the guards of the exit from "Hell" and Karnak managed to defeat one of the two guards, then broke the door's mechanism while the Capo held the other. Karnak emerged from Lineage's chest just as he had defeated Medusa, apparently killing him. Karnak apologized to Medusa for leaving them in such a critical time and told her that she saved the Inhumans in the time of crisis.

Eight months later, Karnak left New Attilan and took the title of Magister of a monastery known as the Second Tower of Wisdom. He led the monks there and passed on the philosophical teachings of his father. In order to sustain the monastery, he often gave his services to S.H.I.E.L.D. by rescuing newly activated Nuhumans and guiding them through the change for a million dollars each. He was later contacted and taken to the Arctic by S.H.I.E.L.D., who explained they needed him to rescue Nuhuman Adam Roderick from I.D.I.C. and rehabilitate him. Magister Karnak deduced an agent in the base was a mole. After he subdued him, Karnak ruptured his liver and destroyed his knee until he revealed the location of an I.D.I.C. cell in Berlin. After Field Director Coulson stopped Karnak from killing the mole, he agreed to recover and rehabilitate Adam.

Karnak later attacked I.D.I.C.'s Berlin cell and encountered the Zen Gunner who insisted that Adam had not been abducted, rather had joined I.D.I.C. of his own free will and had become their Inhuman messiah. After a brief skirmish, as he lay dying, the Zen Gunner told Karnak that he would find Adam at the Chapel of the Single Shadow, but he would not reveal the whereabouts of the location, as that would deprive Karnak of the journey of discovery. Upon dispatching the Zen Gunner, the Magister struck a fault point within the I.D.I.C safe house causing it to collapse into utter disarray. Afterwards he stopped at a humble cafe and asked the waitress for the freshest, purest spring water available, then sat shunning the visual displays of love and affection outside of his window view.

When later asked by his server about his activities, the two were interrupted by the arrival of Field Director Coulson and Agent Simmons; the director a little less than pleased with his progress. After a long sermon about the three worlds using Phil, Jemma, and his caterer as his break down pertaining to A. our world and its view of importance, B. the scientifically studied portion of life on it, and C. the beautiful rock that is the world which is and always will be perfection in and of itself; ending in A. Coulson paying for his bar tab. They all set off for the cultist's base in the Eastern European country of Transia, where the Chapel that Karnak sought was located. On the way there, he ruminated on an image plucked from the group's darksite, feeling if one were religious they would praise some kind of god and that the fanaticized A.I.M. off-shoot's coming of their lord may be the key to fixing said god's mistakes by unmaking the aforementioned creator's creation.

Dubbing the single shadow picture as the beginning point of a renewed existence representing its reduction back to singular form, when Phil commented on something needing to be casting the shadow, he was rather perturbed by his escort's response of a burning god's light blocked by the shadow of said other godly incarnation, as all became nothing around him again. Reaching their destination, the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier soon came under attack by more altered priests serving and protecting; in Karnak's words, a "gaudy" monastery, all of whom he swept aside in bloody fashion as he screeched a counter resonance against their sonic attack by broadcasting it over the vessel's speaker system, cracking an evil smile when a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent asked if he was Satan. All but humbly replying that the latter is but a story, and that he is Karnak.

Moving to descend upon the chapel grounds the Inhuman hermit is escorted by the same agent whom he frightened with his display to the vessels transporter bay. After recommending him coming to train at the tower of wisdom to overcome his fears, the weary warrior traded across the sea of bodies left in his wake venturing onward into the enemy stronghold. Both perplexed and aloof at the displays the spy cultists have erected Karnak is soon beset by more of its altered priests, as if they were descending upon an open stage during a play. While initially having trouble dispatching the opposition he finally succeeded only to be greeted by his prime objective and a white-clad host accompanying him. After Karnak mentioned he had come to retrieve him, Adam stated he was fine where he was he wishing his would be liberator would tell his parents while he loved them he would not be coming home, saying he was happy and that I.D.I.C's priests were showing him just who was, what he was and how to truly utilize his abilities. When the former moved in to acquire the boy by force, one of his guardians moved in and intercepted him using powers he received from Mr. Rodrick. After the group warps out a deeply perturbed Karnak initiates a communications device he picked off of Coulson to contact S.H.I.E.L.D. Voicing his concerns over the young man’s true talents and the threat the cult cell now presented, formally requesting their assistance in tracking him down before asking them to level the Chapel itself.

Karnak joined up with Quake's Secret Warriors. While driving west, the Warriors encountered the Howling Commandos after falling into a trap. After escaping, the team was found by the X-Men.

Alien Race: Kherubim

Post by Sidious »

Kherubim

Background:
Thousands of years ago, the Kherubim destroyed their own planet, according to Titan myth. They then came to Khera and settled it, subjugating the Titans. The Titans would slowly become more or less accepted within the Kherubim society, but remained second-class citizens.

Millennia ago the Kherans came into contact with the Daemonites and a war erupted between both species. This war would last several centuries. A small group of Kherans and Daemonites would crash land on Earth and would inspire humanity with tales of gods, angels, demons and monsters. Their conflict would continue till the end of the 20th century, while in space the Kherans would go on to defeat the Daemonites. Kherans imposed heavy indemnities on the Daemonites and their society went bankrupt trying to pay them off. Khera allowed Daemonites to mi-grate to the more prosperous planet, but all Daemonites on Khera had to live in ghettos.

When a small group of Kheran and half-Kheran heroes from Earth, known as the WildC.A.T.s, arrived on Khera, they were welcomed as heroes, but they quickly found out that Kheran society had changed over the years. They left the planet, but now the Kherans knew of Earth.

Recently, the Kherubim lord Majestros found hidden Kheran devices, known as Planet Shaper Engines, beneath the surface of the Earth. It turned out that humanity and Kherans are closely related and that the universe has been seeded with their type of species. Similar Planet Shaper Engines landed on Khera, converting the original Titantrophes species into a subservient species and raising a Kheran species. It was also revealed that a similar device landed on Daemon and tried to turn the population into slaves. The device gave birth to the Daemonites as a servitor race and the local 'Kherans' tried to exterminate them when they turned out to be rebellious, but the Daemonites killed their would-be masters.

The Shaper Guild from Khera arrived on Earth and announced that factions within Kherubim society had noticed that Khera was falling apart and that Earth would be an ideal place to relocate to. They planned on using the Planet Shaper Engines to terraform the Earth into another Khera. Kherans are divided over the matter and a civil war is the result.

HISTORY
The Klyntar, better known as the Symbiotes, are a species of inorganic, amorphous, symbiotic extra-terrestrials created at the beginning of the universe by the primordial deity Knull, who manifested the first symbiote from his shadow and used them as living weapons to slaughter the Celestials and other deities, and to corrupt their creations. The symbiotes are fully aware and sentient creatures, but were also vicious predators, compelling their hosts to violence and corrupting them. Knull used them to conquer entire planets and devour civilizations; but when he was defeated by Thor his connection to them was severed. The symbiotes who had bonded to noble and benevolent hosts rebelled against him and imprisoned him at the center of an artificial planet in the Andromeda Galaxy; naming it and themselves after their word for "cage".

Ashamed of their dark origins, the symbiotes of Klyntar invented and perpetuated a lie that their species was naturally benevolent. Endeavoring to spread peace throughout the universe, the symbiotes established a hive mind capable of sensing the "voice" of the Cosmos and created an intergalactic peacekeeping society called the Agents of the Cosmos by using the symbiosis they need to subsist in order to transform "worthy" hosts into the ultimate noble warriors. However, to achieve this "perfect" symbiosis, the host must have a perfect blend of moral and physical ideals. If not, the resulting symbiosis would corrupt both the Klyntar and its host. In their desperation to expunge their violent past, the Klyntar hive-mind cut off corrupted symbiotes from the hive-mind; developed a means of "cleansing" them, and executed those who failed the trial.

At some point in the distant past, the exiled corrupted symbiotes established a brutal spacefaring empire and resumed infecting and overtaking entire planets, spreading what the Klyntar claimed was misinformation about their benevolent counterparts. As a result, despite the Agents of the Cosmos' efforts the species as a whole re-developed the reputation of being predatory monsters that dominate their host mentally and physically while parasitically feeding off their emotions and bodies. The corrupted symbiotes tend to force their hosts to perform spectacular and terrifying feats in order to feed off of the resulting rush of adrenaline (and possibly other hormones, such as phenethylamine). Eventually, these host beings would be sucked dry, exhausted by the constant stress and exertion, or simply die in a failed stunt, whereupon the symbiote would seek out a new host and repeat the process. At some point in time, a colony of feral symbiotes encountered the Silver Surfer and the planet they had conquered was devoured by Galactus, causing them to develop an instinctual fear of the Surfer via their genetic memory. At another point in time, feral symbiotes invaded the Microverse, where their very existence proved corrosive and toxic, and attempted to consume the Enigma Force itself, but were repelled.

While corrupted symbiotes are cut off from their species' hive-mind and unable to access their full potential, it has been noted on several occasions that certain long-lived specimens have become more powerful over time, usually by bonding to multiple successive hosts. And can develop increased resistance to heat and sonic with repeated expo-sure. In some cases, they can undergo spontaneous mutation and develop new abilities, such as the Venom symbiote developing the ability to form weaponry from its constituent matter, and the Carnage symbiote developing the abilities to convert negative emotions into bio-mass and remotely control pieces of itself separated from its main body. Successive generations of symbiotes will also be more powerful than their predecessors, and feral symbiotes are instinctively indifferent or hostile towards their progenitors and progeny.

Many corrupt symbiotes, such as Venom, Carnage, Toxin, and Zzxz, possess ravenous predatory appetites for the flesh of other life-forms and will influence or force their hosts to commit cannibalism to satiate this. It is for this reason that feral symbiotes consider themselves to be the ultimate predators of the universe, and are regarded with revulsion and terror by most other species. At least one feral Klyntar, the Carnage symbiote, has demonstrated the ability to convert consumed organic material into additional biomass, using this power to assist in conquering the town of Doverton, Colorado and to re-generate from a small tissue sample after being separated from its host. Feral symbiotes are much more effective at bonding to their host if the host has the same feelings and urges as the symbiote. For example, the Venom symbiote bonded successfully with Eddie Brock because they shared anger and desire for revenge towards Spider-Man. As this shows, symbiotes are able to project their own emotions and personal desires, in addition to reflecting and reacting to the emotions and desires of their host, to the point of assuming complete control over their host's body if they so choose. A symbiote's influence over its host can be resisted and suppressed through a number of means, including willpower and chemical sedatives. Symbiotes in general are weak to intense heat and sonics, although successive generations can develop a resistance to these weaknesses, and an individual symbiote can also mutate to become more resilient over time. Symbiotes can also amalgamate with one another to become more powerful, as seen with the Hybrid symbiote, the Venom symbiote assimilating its clone, and with the Venom-Carnage hybrids created by Marquis Radu.

Even if separated from a host, trace remnants of the symbiote's biomass will often remain in the host's body, as seen with the Venom symbiote leaving remnants of itself within the bodies of Peter Parker and Eddie Brock. The Carnage symbiote has taken this process to an extreme by merging with its host's blood, making separating them very difficult.

The symbiote that would eventually become Venom was the 998th generation of a lineage of symbiotes, hatched on the planet Klyntar from an egg. Bred to be an Agent of the Cosmos, it was bonded to the inhabitant of an icy planet, who proved to be an unworthy host filled with hatred and cruelty. The host used the young symbiote to carry out a genocide against his home-world, leaving it a barren wasteland and corrupting the symbiote with rage and bloodlust. At some point the symbiote joined a group of corrupted Klyntar who used their hosts as chattel, and was labeled as deranged due to its desire to form a single, strong, symbiotic bond with its host and protect them. The symbiote was placed in a prison canister and supposedly condemned to death by disintegration.

During the Secret Wars, when several of Earth's heroes and villains were transported to Battleworld by the Beyonder, Deadpool went looking for the alien technology Thor had stumbled upon to repair his tattered costume. Instead, he found the machine holding the symbiote captive. The released symbiote did indeed form a "costume" for him -- as the species naturally covers their entire host -- but Deadpool sensed that it was alive and returned it to its prison, concerned his insanity would adversely affect it. Spider-Man followed shortly afterwards and bonded to it, the symbiote responded to Parker's thoughts by patterning itself after the new Spider-Woman's black and white costume.

The new "costume" had several useful properties -- the ability to mimic other forms of clothing, a "dimensional aperture" which could store small objects without adding bulk to the costume, and its own source of webbing -- which Spider-Man initially attributed to its alien origins. After returning to Earth, the costume could not stand to be separated from Parker for very long, and it often engulfed the sleeping hero, sending him out to fight crime under its control. The then-villainous Puma -- who was fighting Spider-Man at the time -- was the first to perceive that the costume's webbing was organic, causing the hero to seek the advice of Reed Richards. Richards isolated the living costume, setting into motion a series of events that would lead to the creation of Venom -- the merger of the symbiote and Spider-Man critic Eddie Brock.

Venom proved to be a particularly malicious foe, and broke several laws in pursuit of revenge against Spider-Man. On one occasion, while Brock was incarcerated for his crimes as Venom -- and while he patiently waited for the escaped symbiote to free him -- he shared a cell with serial killer Cletus Kasady. The symbiote did in fact liberate Brock, but in so doing left behind its spawn. The symbiote spawn bonded with Kasady, turning him into the lethal villain Carnage (Cletus Kasady). Because Kasady bonded with the symbiote on a cellular level (something Brock refused to do), Carnage proved more formidable than either Venom or Spider-Man, and the two eventually formed an uneasy alliance to deal with the threat. The Carnage symbiote was capable of greater control of its constituent matter than the Venom symbiote. At one point, it managed to travel by telephone line by thinning itself to a strand of cellular width, though Venom replicated this feat to bond with Anne Weying. It could also transform its host's appendages to a greater degree than the Venom symbiote could, allowing Carnage to form spikes, blades, and axe heads at will. The Carnage symbiote appears to be denser as well, allowing its host to become more durable and stronger than the Venom symbiote would allow.

At one point, Venom was captured by the Life Foundation, an organization that made a comfortable living in preparing for the world's nuclear annihilation. Convinced that a nuclear war was inevitable, the Life Foundation's clients payed to as-sure that the human race (and they in particular) would survive the cataclysm in luxury. The Life Foundation was at one point researching a way to create "super-cops" to police their new Utopia. Towards that end, they probed the Venom symbiote and extracted the last five of its "seeds" -- the basis for later spawn as the symbiotes reproduce asexually. These were cultured and bonded to five of the Life Foundation's best security personnel to form the Guardians. The individuals eventually became known by the codenames Scream, Riot, Phage, Agony, and Lasher. Either due to the extraction process, the effect of the Earth environment on the spawn, or both, these symbiotes proved to be even more mutated than Carnage. They possessed the same ability to manipulate their forms as Carnage, though the five hosts never quite got the hang of actually communicating with the under-developed symbiotes.

After several crushing defeats, Scream had a psychotic breakdown (possibly contributed to by her schizophrenia) and determined that all symbiotes were evil. She killed off her former compatriots with a sonic blade, not realizing that the symbiotes themselves had survived. The four symbiotes were kept for a time in the Vault, a high-security prison for super-beings, but were freed from the lab by Guardsmen Scott Washington, who decided that they were not evil and did not deserve a lifetime of pain and suffering. Washington was fired when it was discovered that he had freed the symbiotes. All four symbiotes were weakened, and survived by merging together to form a single, more powerful symbiote. This symbiote later went on to merge with Washington, who had been crippled after a scuffle with the Eazy X gang following his return to the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn. After bonding with the hybrid symbiote, he regained use of his legs, and began extracting revenge on the gangs that had destroyed his neighborhood as the crime fighter "Hybrid".

Spiderman led Brock to doubt the nature of his relationship with his symbiote, suggesting that it had been controlling him. When Brock ordered the symbiote to separate from him so that he could consider the matter, the pained symbiote let out a "psychic scream" of anguish so powerful that it drew others of its kind from space. Using a unwilling innocent as its host, the Venom symbiote and the extraterrestrial symbiotes constructed a portal to an alien world, the native population of which had been enthralled by the symbiotes. The symbiotes then launched a full-scale invasion of Earth, starting in New York. In the ensuing chaos, Carnage found that he could absorb the symbiotes to increase his symbiote's mass and power, and temporarily became monolithic in size by doing so. Brock realized that the creatures were highly sensitive to emotion, and (with his now-penitent symbiote) released a wail of anguish so great that it was able to kill most of the invading symbiotes.

Soon after, the presence of the surviving symbiotes attracted their only known predator, the Xenophage. Xenophages are a race of amorphous, shape-shifting aliens whose diets consist mainly of symbiotes, though they are not above eating the occasional humanoid if they get particularly hungry. The Xenophage took a particular interest in Venom, as symbiotes tend to become more "flavorful" after bonding with a host for a long period of time. Venom managed to dispatch the first Xenophage, though more eventually arrived on Earth to seek out their exotic prey.

During a battle with the Fantastic Four and Spider-Man, Venom's tongue was severed. This portion of the symbiote was used to create a duplicate, Mania, which rampaged through an Arctic research facility and military base, pursued by a nanorobotic alien called "the Suit". The clone was revealed to have been programmed by a second nanite alien, Bob, to destroy humanity should it reunite with the original Venom symbiote. The symbiote clone was bonded to Patricia Robertson, and ultimately consumed by the original Venom symbiote. Years later, when Agent Venom attempted to protect his student Andrea "Andi" Benton from Jack O'Lantern using the Venom symbiote, it regurgitated the clone in order to purge itself of a demon. The possessed clone bonded to Andi, who defeated Jack O'Lantern and took to calling herself Mania. Looking to avenge her murdered father, Mania used the symbiote clone to fight crime in Philadelphia, but found herself being targeted by the Department of Occult Armaments agents Crossbones and Master Mayhem. With the help of Agent Venom and Mephisto, she was able to defeat them.

Much later, Carnage realized he was also about to spawn. Fearing the spawn would become more powerful than him and disgusted by the notion of reproduction, he resolved to destroy the spawn as soon as it was born. Venom, controlled by the symbiote, also became aware of the spawn and resolved to protect it and culture it as an ally. After the new symbiote was spawned, Carnage was too weak to kill the creature himself, and the symbiote found a human host in Officer Patrick Mulligan. Venom had warned Carnage that every thou-sand generations or so the symbiotes' genetic memory can break down, and the new symbiote must be instructed by its "grandparent" to correct the errors. Since Venom has not been able to do so, this new symbiote bothered the unfortunate cop with the numerous questions, quandaries, and tantrums that normal children experience as they age. The difference, of course, is that normal children tend to have fewer urges toward homicide. For a while, Mulligan did his best in balancing work, his family life, the difficult new symbiote, and his new career as the crime fighter "Toxin"; however, he was later murdered by Blackheart, who took the symbiote and bonded samples of it to clones of X-23. The Toxin symbiote was subsequently stolen by the Crime Master and bonded to Eddie Brock. Despite initially seizing control of him in an attempt to kill its grand-parent, the Toxin symbiote and Eddie have since worked out a similar relationship to the one Eddie once had with Venom.

Eddie Brock, disgusted by the Venom symbiote's growing bloodlust after having a religious awakening and fearing for the fate of his soul, sold the symbiote to Don Fortunato, who gave it to his son Angelo. Disgusted by his cowardice, the symbiote abandoned Angelo of its own accord and later sought out Mac Gargan. Gargan initially feared the symbiote's growing influence over him after it forced him to commit cannibalism to satiate its hunger, but later came to embrace its bloodlust. After the events of Brand New Day, Eddie Brock started working for Martin Li and Aunt May at the F.E.A.S.T. center. Thanks to Mr. Li's "mysterious powers", Eddie was cured of his cancer and the remnants of the symbiote were fused to his white blood cells. Unfortunately, the then current Venom, Mac Gargan, entered the F.E.A.S.T. center looking for Spider-Man, having sensed one of the symbiote's former hosts. He found Eddie instead, and the symbiote immediately attempted to rebond to its former host. However, the mystically enhanced fusion between the symbiote's cells and Eddie's lymphocytes emerged, forming Anti-Venom, proving corrosive to the original symbiote. Eddie later sacrificed the Anti-Venom symbiote to create a vaccine for the Spider Flu, but it appears a portion of it was somehow acquired by the Hobgoblin, who enfranchised the identity as one of his "Hob-Heroes" after his Inversion.

Later, when Carnage was returned to Earth after his apparent death, Hall Industries used the symbiote to produce advanced prostheses. Dr. Tanis Nieves was provided with one after losing one of her arms in an altercation between Hall Industries' Iron Rangers and the Doppelgänger. This bio-mechanical prosthetic developed into a new machine/symbiote hybrid called Scorn, which Tanis bonded to in order to stop Carnage.

Following its separation from Mac Gargan, the Venom symbiote was given to Eugene "Flash" Thompson by the US military, having been administered a sedative to keep it from seizing control of him. Flash later allowed the symbiote to bond to him, and it expressed a preference for him as a host, despite at-tempting to return to Eddie Brock and later "Peter Parker." When not suppressed, the symbiote tended to rampage and attempt to eat any nearby enemies, and later exhibited a desire to acquire demonic pow-ers, bargaining with Mephisto to receive a Hell Mark and attempting to absorb Zarathos during the Circle of Four. These ambitions were cut short when it was forced to relinquish those powers to its clone, Mania, after a demon that was im-planted in it by Daimon Hellstrom began attempting to take it over. During Flash's sojourn into space as a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy, the Venom symbiote became increasingly erratic, eventually seizing control of him and rampaging until they were separated, whereupon it took control of numerous members of the Guardians of the Galaxy until it managed to arrive to the destination it was being led to: the original Planet of the Symbiotes. There, the Guardians were met with the benevolent Klyntar, who revealed to them the true origin of the symbiotes. The Klyntar explained that the reason Venom Symbiote was acting erratic was because as soon as it returned to space, the Klyntar managed to reconnect it to their hive-mind, and it was initially disconcerted until it was drawn closer and a better connection was established, allowing the Klyntar to guide it to their homeworld. Now reconnected with the collective, the Venom symbiote's corruption was repaired and it re-bonded with Flash, making him into a stronger and more pure Agent Venom. Bonding to Mercurio, a Gramosian space pirate, caused the symbiote to temporarily relapse into its villainous ways, though with Flash's help it was able to suppress its rage and malevolent urges.

At some point following his moral inversion, Tony Stark created the "Endo-Sym" armor, which, similarly to the Iron Ranger armor, was made using "building blocks" taken from a symbiote. After Rescue and the Iron Man A.I. attempted to damage the armor with sonic blasts, Stark revealed he had the foresight to find a way to remove that inherited weakness.

Another feral symbiote, unrelated to Venom's lineage, was captured by Shi'ar Emperor D'Ken and given the moniker Zzxz. Classified as one of the most dangerous entities the Empire had encountered, it was recruited by Vulcan to serve as one of his praetorian guards and eventually took Raza Longknife as a host. Zzxz was later separated from Raza and imprisoned on Ego. It was retrieved and fired at an evil, alternate universe incarnation of Charles Xavier, who had become a giant brain-monster, and was last seen eating him.

A group of evil symbiotes bonded to a swarm of Brood, which they later abandoned and ate, in order to take over the S.W.O.R.D. satellite and everyone aboard it, including Abigail Brand and the pregnant Death-bird. The symbiotes were defeated and jettisoned into space by Spider-Man and the Special Class of the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning. Spider-Man was forced to bond with a symbiote for a power boost, controlling it with the help of the telepathic No-Girl, which caused it to take on an appearance identical to the Venom symbiote. He ultimately lost control of it, but it was subdued and separated from him.

HISTORY
Korath-Thak is an agent of the Kree Empire. He was a cyber-geneticist, and the founder and head of the Pursuer Project to develop cybernetic warriors for the Kree militia. When the Pursuer Project was discontinued, Korath was reassigned as a munitions manufacturing plant foreman. Seeking to prove the validity of his work, Korath-Thak reengineered the tech at the plant to imprint the Pursuer template on himself, becoming Korath the Pursuer.

Korath used cyber-genetic technology of his own design to gain superhuman powers during the Kree/Shi'ar War. He then met Shatterax, Ultimus, and Supremor. At the behest of Supremor, he attacked the Avengers force on Hala, and battled Captain America. Alongside the Kree Starforce, he again battled the Avengers on Hala. He witnessed the assassination of Ael-Dan and Dar-Benn by Death-bird and the return to power of the Supreme Intelligence. Alongside the Kree Starforce, he was held captive in a Shi'ar stasis ray. He witnessed a battle between an Avengers force, and was defeated by the Scarlet Witch and Astra. Alongside the Kree Starforce, he arrived in the Shi'ar Empire to assassinate Lilandra. He battled another contingent of Avengers and the Shi'ar Imperial Guard. He returned to Hala alongside Lilandra, Starforce, and the Imperial Guard after the detonation of the nega-bomb to help the Kree rebuild under Shi'ar rule. Alongside the Shi'ar Starforce and Deathbird, Korath attacked Quasar, Her, and Makkari on Hala for violating Shi'ar airspace.

Admiral Galen-Kor and his criminal forces battled Deathbird and Starforce. Korath and Starforce along-side the Underground Legion, battled Lord Tantalus.

When the Kree regained control of the empire, Korath and the Starforce were branded as collaborators with the Shi'ar occupying force and despised by the popular. Korath wound up settling on the planet of Godthab Omega.

Korath was apparently assimilated into The Phalanx and became one of their Phalanx Select. He fought Quasar, Moondragon, and Adam Warlock, and was killed by Ultron when he failed to capture Adam Warlock.

HISTORY
Kosmos was the result of the fusion of the Beyonder and Molecule Man, who were said to be sentient parts of a Cosmic Cube made by the ex-tradimensional Beyonders, both finally submitted to being reshaped into a Cube, which evolved into the entity called Kosmos.

This new being was cared by Kubik, to which it developed feelings, and turned to be curious, inquisitive and friendly. At some point, Molecule Man managed to separate himself from it and return to Earth, causing it to take on a new female form in the hope of avoiding the violent tendencies of its past male incarnation. Kosmos was later attacked by Molecule Man, who had gone mad after his lover had died, drawing out the essence of the Beyonder. Molecule Man having nearly destroyed the Beyonder and Kosmos with it was convinced by Kubik to restore the Beyonder's essence to Kosmos to save her life after explaining how Kubik had fallen in love with Kosmos.

Kubik and Kosmos parted ways with Kosmos continuing to evolve, apparently negatively, as she shaped itself into a new incarnation called the Maker, which turned to be functionally insane as the Beyonder's personality sought overtake the Kosmos aspect of the Maker's mind. She obliviously destroyed a Shi'ar agrarian settlement and killed 64,000 colonists before being incapacitated by Imperial Guard Telepath, Oracle and placed in stasis in the Klyn space prison. Thanos fought and intentionally drove her to catatonia to protect the universe from her madness by trapping the Beyonder's malevolent essence inside her catatonic immortal body, warning that if her physical body was ever destroyed then the Beyonder would roam free once again. She, or at least her physical form, perished when the Kyln, the cosmic prison where she was held, was destroyed by the Annihilation Wave. Her body was found intact but deceased by the Fallen One by the order of Thanos to bring her back alive or report that she was truly dead. The Fallen One planned to bring her body back to Thanos before being captured by Tenebrous and Aegis.

CONTACTS: Shaper of Worlds, Kosmos, Fantastic Four

HISTORY
Kubik's ultimate creators were the mysterious other dimensional entities known as the Beyonders. The Beyonders studied the development of life in Earth's dimension. As one of their experiments, they allowed vast energies to enter the Earth dimension through inter-dimensional portals created through the use of a certain kind of force field. Such energies could be entrapped within a matrix of force fields that formed a perfect cube. The result is the entity known on Earth as a Cosmic Cube. A Cosmic Cube would alter reality according to the desires of its wielders. However, a Cosmic Cube was also a living being in embryonic form. Eventually it developed its own consciousness patterning it after the consciousness of the sentient being with whom it was in mental and physical contact. Finally, the Cosmic Cube would become a mature sentient being capable of independent will and action. Kubik was one such cube.

The cube that would evolve into Kubik was "created" by Advanced Idea Mechanics, a subversive organization that supplied advanced weapons to other cabals such as Hydra and the Secret Empire. Both M.O.D.O.K. and the Red Skull used it primarily as a mind control device. Later, Set the Serpent God used it to try to enter the Earth-616 reality. The demon was defeated however, and the Cube fell into the hands of a man named Bernard Worrell, who became the new leader of a splinter cell of AIM scientists.

Wielded by Worrell during a battle with Captain America, the Cube was affected by the man's hatred and aggression, and began to distort. At this moment, the Shaper of Worlds arrived under orders from the Kree Supreme Intelligence to nurture the Cube and stop it from destroying reality, as the Shaper almost had when it was a cube controlled by the Skrull Emperor. Allowing Captain America to hold the cube, the Shaper could tell it was impressed by the man's heroism and courage, and then took it from Earth to further raise it.

The sentient Cube encountered the heroes of Earth out in space when it helped the Defenders defeat Star-Thief. It also returned to Earth and was briefly copied by the Super-Adaptoid, another product of AIM science.

Some years later, Kubik and the Shaper arrived in the Beyonder's pocket universe to confront the cosmic being. Now morphed into a humanoid form, Kubik showed the Beyonder and the Molecule Man that they were both parts of an incomplete cube, and merged their powers to form a new being called Kosmos.

Kubik was last seen as overseer of Kosmos' guidance.

After the death of his Kosmos in-carnation the Beyonder was free once again. He discovered the Incursions and the cause of the multiversal collapse.

The Shaper, Kubik, and Beyonder sought to defend their universe against their creators. The Ivory Kings proved too powerful in battle for the trio to defeat. Learning that the Ivory Kings were linear beings unable to travel in time, the Beyonder fled from the battle hiding in the past, merged with a human as a new creation, the Sentry. During the final assault on the Ivory Kings, the Shaper and Kubik were losing. In an effort to save him, Kubik sent the shaper back in time to merge with Adam Brashear, the Blue Marvel.

Kubik’s fate remains unknown.

Legion of Supervillains

Post by Sidious »

Legion of Super Villains:

Background:
The Legion of Super-Villains made their first appearance when they were contacted by an incarcerated Lex Luthor to devise a plan to defeat Superman. The Legion of Super-Villains, who consisted of Cos-mic King, Lightning Lord and Saturn Queen, freed Lex Luthor from his jail cell to speak to him. The Legion of Super-Villains members each told their history to Lex Luthor, and how they all come from the distant future where the Legion of Super-Heroes have reached adulthood and continue to fight crime. They explain that they want to defeat Superman to humiliate their arch-foes, since Superman was a Legion member as Superboy. They trapped Superman in a kryptonite shield and almost vanquished him if not for the intervention of the Legion of Super-Heroes members, Lightning Man, Cosmic Man and Saturn Woman, who were adult versions of Lightning Lad, Cosmic Boy and Saturn Girl, respectively.

The next time the Legion of Super-Villains take another stance against their honorable counterparts was when they journeyed into the past to join the Legion of Super-Heroes when it was being run by Dynamo-Boy, a person who cheated his way on the team to expel every rightful member. Since they journeyed from the future, no one would be aware that the Legion of Super-Villains members were actually criminals, so they would be able to join the Legion of Super-Heroes without arousing suspicion. Under the guise of fighting crime, this new "Legion" actually committed it instead. The expelled, honorable members of the Legion of Super-Heroes returned and fought the Legion of Super-Villains, chasing them off back into the future.

When Superman traveled to the very distant future, when the members of the Legion of Super-Heroes are adults and some are even married with children, the Legion of Super-Villains rear their criminal heads again with two new members: Beauty Blaze and Echo. The two Legions fight, with the Legion of Super-Villains getting the upper hand but are stopped by the powers of the descendants of both Lex Luthor and Mr. Mxyzptlk, who are, ironically, heroes in the future.

Chronologically, the first Legion of Super-Villains was led by Tarik the Mute, a man who spoke through a robot. Tarik the Mute started a school to teach criminals how to hone their abilities and wanted the training guidebooks from the Legion Academy to have the edge. Tarik the Mute was able to blackmail Colossal Boy by turning his parents into fragile glass. Holding them hostage, Tarik the Mute made Colossal Boy get the training guidebooks for his Legion of Super-Villains, who included some former Legion rejects like Ron-Karr, Spider-Girl, Radiation Roy and Nemesis Kid, as well as the brother of Lightning Lad, Lightning Lord. Members of the Legion of Super-Heroes were able to infiltrate this evil school and stop Tarik the Mute from continuing his criminal endeavors. Superboy (in disguise), Chameleon Boy, and Legion trainees Chemical King and Timber Wolf comprised the team that infiltrated the school. For their efforts, Chemical King and Timber Wolf were granted full membership status with Legion.

The Legion of Super-Villains have continued to commit crimes without the leadership of Tarik the Mute, due to his incarceration. New members, including Chameleon Chief and Sun Emperor, who also had futuristic counterparts with the future Legion Super of Super-Villains, joined established members like Spider-Girl, Nemesis Kid, Radiation Roy and Lightning Lord. On one of their capers, the LSV attempted to sneak their way into the Legion of Super-Heroes' headquarters to plant a bomb that would destroy everything. Fortunately for the LSH, they figured out the ruse in time to prevent the bomb from exploding, sending the super villains back to jail.

The Legion of Super-Villain's biggest triumph and most ambitious plan was to overtake the world of Orando, where the Legionnaire Queen Projectra rules, and send it to an alternate dimension, where they could rule the planet in isolation. The Legion of Super-Villains also made a pact that each member would have to kill a Legion of Super-Heroes member. Led by Nemesis Kid, this incarnation of the Legion of Super-Villains boasted the largest roster the team has ever seen.

The Legion of Super-Villains attacked the Legion of Super-Heroes individually or in pairs, when they were most vulnerable. Their sheer number could overtake the heroic Legion and it nearly did. They were able to defeat several members of the Legion, including Lightning Lass, Queen Projectra and Karate Kid, holding them hostage. Eventually, a large brawl occurred between the two teams, which was the perfect diversion for Nemesis Kid to enact his plan of transporting Orando into an alternate dimension, which he did with the help of Zymyr's technology.

The biggest impact that their attack on the Legion of Super-Heroes had was on the planet of Orando, when Nemesis Kid fought against Karate Kid and killed him. Queen Projectra, in a rage, snapped Nemesis Kid's neck as her brand of justice. The tides turned and the Legion of Super-Heroes were able to defeat the Legion of Super-Villains, especially without the leadership of Nemesis Kid. The remaining members of the Legion of Super-Villains were remanded to Takron-Galtos, a planet devoted to being a large-scale prison facility.

The original Legion of Super-Villains, consisting of the futuristic, adult Cosmic King, Saturn Queen and Lightning Lord, made a return after the Crisis on Infinite Earths. It has been revealed that all along, this incarnation of the Legion were always from an alternate reality. In order for their alternate reality to become real, Saturn Queen, Cosmic King and Lightning Lord traveled to the past and kidnapped both Batman and Superman, raising them as their own children. They also killed off some influential superheroes, including Aquaman, Hal Jordan, Barry Allen and the Martian Manhunter, so they would not face undue opposition. However, Batman and Superman eventually realized their predicament and fought against their 'parents'. The Legion of Super-Villains then recruited Beauty Blaze and Echo, working with Ra's al Ghul, to stop Batman and Superman from disrupting their carefully plotted plans. However, Superman and Batman, along with some revived members of the Justice League of America, defeated the Legion of Super-Villains. Cosmic King, Saturn Queen and Lightning Lord were returned to their rightful time and place, where their version of the Legion of Super-Heroes (all adults) took them into custody.

The Legion of Super-Villains have made a return during the events of Final Crisis. They have all been freed by Superboy Prime, where it is revealed that he is the actual inspiration for the formation of the Legion of Super-Villains, much like Superman was the inspiration for the Legion of Super-Heroes. They proceeded to destroy Takron-Galtos, the prison planet they were incarcerated on. Their goal was simple: the utter destruction of Superman and the Legion of Super-Heroes. The genesis of this roster has spurned the Legion of Super-Heroes to seek out alternate reality versions of themselves to battle against the massive Legion of Super-Villains. The Legion of Super-Villains are given rings very similar to their heroic counterparts, but the ring bears an S that resembles the S on Superboy Prime's logo.

HISTORY
Mick Yardreigh, alias Black Mace is a member of the Taurus Gang a group of criminals who are the enemies of the Legion of Super-Heroes. He was born on Earth in the late 30th Century, growing he discovered he was was a Metahuman with Superhuman strength. He grew up as a bully and a thug, but he turned this to his advantage once a got old enough a became a mercenary for hire. His name comes from his energy mace he carried, made of an experimental metal on the Science Asteroid. He stole the mace and started using it in his crimes. He would turn up more and more frequently in the reports of the Science Police. This brought him to the attention of Science Police Chief Zoltorus, who brought him in for a private meeting after one of Black Mace's stay on the prison planet Takron-Galtos.

Police Chief Zoltorus was corrupt, living a double life as a respected cop and mob leader. Chief Zoltorus purged Mace's criminal records, and hired him to put together a team of superhuman agents to serve the Taurus Gang. He worked alongside Taurus Gang, alongside Shagrek, Rogarth, Mystelor, and Quanto. The superhuman members of the Taurus Gang became the core of a notorious mob fighting for control of the underworld in Metropolis and the rest of the United Planets. With their powers and Zoltorus' inside information, the other mobs were forced to band together. This new group, Scorpius, forcibly recruited members of the Legion of Super-Heroes to help them beat Taurus. Black Mace and the others demanded more money from Zoltorus, since their job was now harder. When Zoltorus refused, Black Mace and the others abandoned him during a battle with the Legionnaires. Zoltorus was exposed and captured. Black Mace and his team-mates went underground and then apparently went their separate ways.

He was encountered Legion again, when his personal starship crashed on Nolgor IV, a desert, barren world in the Talok system. Timber Wolf was passing near in a Legion cruiser and picked up the distress call, when he investigated, Black Mace ambushed him, stunned him, took his Flight Ring, and tried to steal the Legion Cruiser, but ran afoul of the ship's defenses. This enabled Timber Wolf to turn the tables and capture Black Mace. He spent the next several years in prison back on Takron-Galtos. He was reportedly evacuated to Labyrinth when Takron-Galtos was destroyed during the Crisis on Infinite Earths.

Later Black Mace is released from prison, and was lured to Earth by the Dominators, who placed him in their genetic experimentation chambers. He was mindwiped, which left his skill intact, but made him loyal to the Dominion. He was among the subjects who survived the destruction of the chambers and was taken into custody by United Planets authorities, for deprogramming.

When Chemical Kid of the Legion Academy returns home to the planet Phlon. Upon the Legion's arrival, they enter Chemical Kid's family home only to find it in ruins. Inside, the Taurus Gang, led by Black Mace, are threatening the family and smashing the place apart. A battle ensues in order to rescue Chemical Kid's dad, but Chemical Kid's powers mysteriously extinguishes and the other heroes begin to quickly fall.

A new recruit to the gang Alchemical Girl, also from Phlon is draining their powers. Glorith unexpectedly gets an extra surge of power from her mentor Black Witch. The tables are quickly turned, and the heroes subdue their opponents. Chemical Kid confronts his father, wondering why he gave away the secrets of the "the gene mod," which grants his son's powers. The answer is gambling debts, and the Black Mace wanted to create a whole "gene mod gang," starting with the creation of Alchemical Girl.

After the war, Sussa left the planet just before it exploded. Sussa wanted to know what was in the canister before she handed it over, so broke into the Legion Headquarters on Talus and asked them to open the canister.

Sussa began to follow the Legion around because she developed a crush on Ultra Boy. Sussa helped the Legion battle against Mordru and she was labeled a traitor to the United Planets with the rest of the legion when they were framed by Universo.

Sussa went underground with the team, adopting a new look and name Wave, and becoming as official a Legionnaire as she could be.

She remained infatuated with Ultra Boy, but still accepted he was in love with another. She encouraged him to search the time stream for Phantom Girl. Sussa stayed with the team after the Legion cleared their names.

HISTORY
Horace Lafeaugh aka Tusker once tried to audition for the Legion of Super-Heroes. His powers were to extend his unbreakable tusks to extreme lengths. Horace was rejected on the grounds that his powers were impractical.

Many years later, Horace went on a crime spree with his girlfriend, Eyeful Ethel but the pair was defeated by the Legion of Substitute-Heroes.

Over time, Tusker's powers evolved so he no longer had just unbreakable tusks, but he now had an unbreakable skeleton and enhanced durability. He mutates into a large, gray-skinned, monstrous creature.

Tusker then joins the xenophobic superhero group called the Justice League of Earth. The team was made up of Earth-born Legion rejects obsessed with spreading lies about Superman's origin. Tyr was captured, later rescued by his gun hand, and joined the LSV. After his capture at the end of the third incarnation, he escaped from prison to return to Tyrraz.

Tyr's exact role on his homeworld is unknown but appears to be something between warlord and champion. As such, he was chosen to attack the legion prior to Tyrraz's arrival at the UP borders. He is now on Tyrraz with the rest of his people, their homeworld rendered immobile.

Zymyr deserted the LSV as it was on the verge of defeat by its heroic counterpart, and he was one of only two members to remain at large. It seems unlikely that he will attempt to reform the group on his own.

HISTORY
Jesse Chambers was born in Queens, New York to the golden age superheroes Johnny Quick and Liberty Belle.

Her father taught Jesse the formula that let him draw energy from the Speed Force, 3x2(9yz)4a, hoping that she would become a super-hero. However, she devoted her life instead to studying superheroes of the past.

While Jesse was studying at Gotham University, the first superhero team, of which her parents had been colleagues, the Justice Society of America, reemerged, following a long absence. Naturally, her the-sis topic became "The Impact of Superheroes on Society" and she began to follow the returned heroes, cataloging their adventures. When her father asked her to deliver some documents to the Society, that encounter would result in her aiding the team as Jesse Quick, finally living up to her father's dream of her being a costumed crime fighter.

Wally West and Max Mercury brought in Jesse to help teach Bart Allen the ways of the super-speed. Wally, realizing that he may not come back from the Speed Force, asked Jesse to take on the mantle of the Flash in the event of that happening. However, she saw through his plan. He had really in-tended for Bart to be the next Flash, but had given the honor to Jesse to provoke him into actually getting serious. When Wally was trying to save Linda Park from a laser blast from Kobra, Jesse got him out of the way in time to save him, but not enough to save herself. The laser nearly severed her leg. She tried metabolizing the wound at super-speed, but it didn't work. However, when Wally returned from the Speed Force, he was able to heal her leg.

Even though he had healed her, Jesse still felt animosity towards Wally for having used her.

When, shortly after, Jesse lost her enhanced speed, the person she blamed was Wally who had been directly using the Speed Force energies instead of simply tapping them like the other speedsters did. In fact it turned out to be the villain Savitar who was the cause, having severed her connection to the Speed Force, as well as multiple other speedsters. Nonetheless, Wally chose the depowered Jesse to accompany him to Savitar's lair, where she succeeded in regaining her powers. During the following battle with Savitar, her father gave his life in order to protect his daughter from one of Savitar's forces and merged with the Speed Force. Although Wally would ultimately triumph over the villain, Jesse was left to mourn her father.

When her father was killed saving her from the villain Savitar, she took over his company, Quickstart Enterprises.

Jesse accepted the reins of managing her father's corporation, Quick-start Enterprises, while also operating as Jesse Quick, even joining the members of the New Titans to stop a nuclear threat. When the Titans were later going through a reorganization, Wally, a founding member, selected Jesse to join the roster, hoping to soothe their old wounds. After initially declining the offer, she ultimately joined the Titans, but was only on the team for a short time, feeling herself to be second-best to Wally.

Nightwing, another founding member, persuaded Jesse to return to the Titans. Later Jesse became involved in a murder mystery involving her own widowed mother, Libby Lawrence. The victim was Philip Geyer, Libby's fiancé. An investigation by the Titans revealed not only the killer, but also an ongoing affair between Philip and Jesse which had contributed to his death. Although Jesse attempted to reconcile with her mother, the saddened Libby found it hard to forgive her daughter, although she apparently did, as in later appearances the two had returned to their friendly relationship. The Titans were disbanded not long afterwards, as two of the team's members were killed in an attack by a rogue Superman robot

For a time, Jesse remained in Pittsburgh, where she was constantly needed to fight supervillain threats and she was never available to help Flash. When she finally managed to return to Keystone, she was able to save Linda from a certain death as her house was blown to pieces. Jesse then tried to interrogate a possible suspect, but the man killed himself. Moments later, Flash rejoined Linda and Jesse returned to her city.

Following that disbanding of the team, Jesse threw herself back into her responsibilities at Quickstart Enterprises, finding little time for a social life. When Wally would later need assistance to defeat the villain Zoom who was capable of moving at speeds surpassing any of Earth's other speedsters, Jesse lent Wally a portion of her special abilities, temporarily boosting Wally's speed so that he was moving almost faster than light and allowing him to defeat Zoom, but leaving her powerless and unable to remember the formula to access her powers. Although Wally knew the formula, she told him not to remind her, reminding him that he'd earlier told her that she needed to slow down anyway.

Since then, she has taken a new position as business manager for a newly-reformed Justice Society of America. Jesse was affected by the disappearance of Rick Tyler, the JSA member known as Hourman, to whom she had grown quite close, but he has since returned. A reunion between the two has not been shown, although she did meet the JSA when they were able to rescue her mother, who had returned to her role as Liberty Belle, but whose powers had gone out of control. In that same adventure, mother and daughter reconciled.

Jesse has been selected to join the JSA and is acting as Liberty Belle. She has also married Hourman (Rick Tyler).

After hearing the news of Bart's death she, along with Jay Garrick, mourned his demise; her reaction to Wally West's return from the Speed Force is as yet unknown.

In an encounter with Zoom, it is revealed that Jesse has retained her speed powers by repeating her father's formula. This of course, adds onto her super-strength which means she inherited both of her parent’s powers.

Following a crisis involving both the JLA and the JSA, Jesse decided to join the League alongside the newly-returned Jade. While serving on the League, she seemingly retained her JSA membership as well.

After several missions Jesse began losing her speed. Later it was revealed that the cause was Jesse being pregnant. Her friend and fellow Leaguer Supergirl asked Jesse what was Rick's reaction when she told him she was pregnant and Jesse said Rick started crying. She also said to her teammates that this was the last time they would see her in costume, at least until the baby was born. Jesse delivered her child in Gotham during the events of Convergence.

Lightning Force - Earth-597

Post by Sidious »

Image

Lightning Force:

Background:
Lightning Force is the Earth-597 counterpart of team Excalibur.

Lightning Force consists of team leader Hauptmann England, the Earth-597 version of Captain Britain, and Meggan, Shadowcat, Nightcrawler. The team member's powers are similar to their Earth-616 counterparts, but - as Nightcrawler observed after their first meeting - their characters appear to be somewhat perverted and twisted, emphasizing the negative and dark characteristics of each Excalibur member. In addition, Shadowcat appears to be a ghost and her phasing powers not only disrupt electronics, but human life as well.

Lightning Force operates in an alternate dimension where Nazi Germany won World War II. Charles Xavier had experimented on them before allow them to live and to serve the Reich.

Reich minister of Genetics Moira MacTaggert and her bodyguard Callisto were travelling to London by Reichsrail England when their train was accidentally abducted to Earth-616 dimension by Widget. Lightning Force was sent after them in order to rescue them and to take them back to the Führer.

First the team appeared at Excalibur Lighthouse where Shadowcat was ordered to kill Lockheed who was guarding the lighthouse when Excalibur was in New York during the Inferno Event. Lockheed survived, however. Lightning Force found out that Reich minister MacTaggert was held prisoner in the Tower of London and mounted an rescue attempt. The British government summoned Excalibur, who immediately returned from the X-Mansion where they had been examining Captain Britain's and Meggan's diminishing powers. Both teams battled each other and finally Lightning Force would be subdued and put on trial.

The jury decided that Lightning Force could not be called to account for their deeds they committed in the Earth-616 dimension and that they should be sent back to their own dimension - despite heavy protests from Kitty Pryde who was still traumatized by her tormented Earth-597 counterpart.

When Lighting Force, Reich minister MacTaggert, Callisto and the Reichsrail train were taken to a portal into their own dimension, Moira MacTaggert - afraid of a military invasion - threw a grenade into the portal just after the exchanged Earth-616 versions of Moira Mac-Taggert, Callisto and the train staff stepped back into their own dimension. The portal collapsed and Lightning Force, the train and Excalibur disappeared.

Later, when Earth-616 and Earth-597 were upon to merge, mixing the bodies and souls of each counter-parts, Herr Xavier tried to contact the Lightning Force, feeling himself in danger but was unable to do it as Excalibur were the dominants spirits in the Lightning Force's members' bodies.

HISTORY
Hauptmann England is the Earth-597 counterpart of Captain Britain and the leader of Lightning Force.

Reich minister of Genetics Moira MacTaggert and her bodyguard Callisto were accidentally abducted by Widget and taken to Earth-616. Hauptmann England and Lightning Force were sent after them in order to free them and to take them back.

Hauptmann England and his team learned that MacTaggert was held prisoner in the Tower of London. During an attempt to free her, Lightning Force encountered their Earth-616 counterpart, team Excalibur. Both teams fought each other, but Excalibur eventually defeated Lightning Force. Hauptmann England and his crew were brought on trial, but the jury decided that they could not be called to account for their deeds in the Earth-616 dimension. The judge decided to send Lightning Force back into their own dimension in exchange for Earth-616's Moira MacTaggert and Callisto. When the gate opened, Minister MacTaggert threw a grenade into the portal to avoid an invasion of her world. Hauptmann England, Lightning Force, and Excalibur vanished when the gate collapsed.

The Hauptmann returned to serve as prosecutor against Brian Brad-dock-616 when he was accused of crimes and dereliction of duty by the Captain Britain Corps.

During Mastermind's war against the Captain Britain Corps, Hauptmann England was captured by "Roma" and his Warpies Army, to find the localization of the Excalibur's Sword. He was tortured and seemingly killed by the Cherubim, Lump, who managed to extract the information directly from his head.

  • Meggan can increases her height by four feet and her Strength to Am/50.
Flight: Ex/20 air speed.

Animal Communication: Meggan has Un/100 ability to sense animal emotions and converse with animals.

LIMITATIONS: For all Meggan's potential, she also operates under a number of limitations, including:
  • Ties to the British Isles: Much like Haupmann England, prolonged separation from Eng-land (or its extra-dimensional analogs) causes reduction in physical abilities and shapechanging by -1CS per week, minimum of FE. Losses are regained upon return to the Isles.
  • Meggan is very self-conscious, and will often change shape based upon her self-image. If attracted to an individual, she can duplicate that person's skin and hair color; if angry, she becomes more and savage. In such situations, the Judge can call for a Psyche FEAT to avoid changing shape.
TALENTS: Eidetic Memory

CONTACTS: Lightning Force, Nazis

HISTORY
Meggan was a member of the Lightning Force, a version of Excalibur from Earth-597, a world where the Nazis had won World War Two and took over the Allied countries.

Meggan traveled to the mainstream Earth, Earth-616 with the rest of her team when the Reich minister of Genetics, Moira MacTaggert and her bodyguard Callisto were switched with their Earth-616 counterparts by a dimensional portal.

Lightning Force gained entry to the Tower of London, where the two women were being held by WHO. At first, Lightning Force appeared to have the upper hand, seeming to beat Excalibur easily. However, it later transpired that Meggan had been overpowered and replaced by the Earth-616 Meggan, who then helped her teammates defeat the rest of Lightning Force.

Meggan returned to Earth-597 with the rest of Lightning Force, as it was thought by the authorities that they couldn't be tried for their crimes in a reality that was not their own.

KNOWN POWERS:
Phasing: Kathrine has In/40 ability to move her body "out-of-phase" with its surroundings, allowing her to pass through solid objects. Shadowcat can phase for as long as she can hold her breath. She has developed a number of power stunts:
  • Pass through force fields on a Power FEAT.
  • Walk on air as it if were solid ground, even climbing up and down
.
  • Disrupt electrical equipment with In/40 ability. Sentient equipment must make an Endurance FEAT or be knocked out for 1-10 rounds and suffer loss of 30 Health.
  • Render other people out-of-phase on touch, for as long as she remains in contact.
  • Wield out-of-phase objects, which become "normal" when released. If released inside a living thing, they inflict damage equivalent to the material strength of that item as if attacking on the edged attack column.
  • Automatic ability to "phase out" in self-defense if surprised (by a gunshot, for example). A Red Psyche FEAT will keep her in normal state.
When out of phase, Shadowcat can only be harmed by multidimensional, psionic, magical, or other out of phase attacks.
Astral Sight: Kathrine can see others in astral form, if in the same or adjacent areas.

LIMITATIONS: Shadowcat is near-sighted, and without correction any-thing beyond three areas is blurry and indistinct. She wears contacts to correct this condition.

TALENTS: None

CONTACTS: Lightning Force, Nazis

HISTORY
From a world where Nazis won World War II. As a Jew, Shadowcat was considered "inferior" to the Aryans. Apparently, she was not only a mutant with phasing powers to disrupt electronics, but a "ghost" whose powers could disrupt human life (It is unclear if "ghost" is a metaphor or if she is really a moving corpse). Shadowcat was a member of Lightning Force and traveled to Earth-616 to rescue Doktor Moira MacTaggert, Reich minister of Genetics and her bodyguard Callisto, who had been accidentally sent there by Widget. She confronted Excalibur and caused a deep impression in her counterpart, Shadowcat from Earth-616. She considered that her Nazi counterpart was supposed to be a teenager but her eyes were too sad and probably she had seen too much.

Eventually, all the people from Earth-597, except for a dragon, were sent back to their own dimension, in a hostage exchange.

HISTORY
Kurt Wagner is a member of the super team Lightning Force on a parallel Earth where the Nazis won World War Two. When the Reich minister for Genetics Moira MacTaggert and her bodyguard Callisto were switched with their Earth-616 counterparts during a train ride by a dimensional portal created by Widget, Lightning Force were sent to rescue them.

Lightning Force soon clashed with their Earth-616 counterparts Excalibur, and Nightcrawler soon took out the Earth-616 version of him by teleporting him multiple times in moments. As the Earth-616 Nightcrawler was still recuperating from injuries received in battle with the Marauders, his body couldn't cope with the strain and he passed out, causing his counterpart to mock him as an inferior specimen.

Eventually, Excalibur overcame their doppelgangers, and along with the rest of Lightning Force, Kurt returned to his own dimension, as the authorities decided he couldn't be tried on Earth-616.

CONTACTS: Universal Church of Truth

HISTORY
The Magus was an evil future version of Adam Warlock born from Chaos and Order's efforts to create a champion of life to oppose Thanos, the champion of Death.

When the Magus and his empire were opposed by the Adam Warlock of their timeline via a temporal paradox, the Magus saturated him with harmless radiation to attract the In-Betweener, agent of Chaos and Order. Warlock was then transported by the In-Betweener to a realm outside space and time where Chaos and Order educated him in their ways, ultimately driving him into madness and turning him into the Magus. After somehow arriving five thousand years in the past on an unidentified planet, the Magus conquered its natives and founded the Universal Church of Truth, which he expanded into an intergalactic empire through holy war.

Four years prior to the day his past self would become him, the Magus started to (re)create every group of the Universal Church of Truth he remembered having faced as Adam Warlock, and gave up physical control of the empire to the Matriarch in order to assure his future would come to pass.

From behind the scenes, he guided Adam Warlock towards his destiny; however, the interference of Thanos, who had learned of this plot by traveling to the future, led Warlock to destroy the karmic path that would have led to the Magus' creation, thus wiping the Magus from existence, and diverging his reality from Earth-616 into Earth-7528, which was then rendered inert.

In consequence of a spell Warlock had to cast to save his universe, elements of Earth-7528 manifested in Earth-616 long before the spell had been cast, and thus the Magus was reborn from the evil half of Adam Warlock's soul, which Warlock had subconsciously purged from himself (along with its good half) after gaining virtual omnipotence through the Infinity Gauntlet to become a logical god.

Reincorporating at the Crossroads, the Magus explored the strange realities which materialized after his resurrection and acquired five Cosmic Containment Units from five of these realities to use in his ultimate plan: to merge Earth-616 with another reality to create a reality under his control. Afterwards, the Magus set up a fortress in a barren region he found far down the dimensional corridor, and convinced Anthropomorpho to grant him access to the Manifestations to create a shade for every hero on Earth for his army. He then sicked these "shades" onto the people they were based on.

Magus knocked over some chess piece heroes as he watched his "shade" versions of the heroes’ battle their counterparts. The "shade" Thanos warned Magus that these heroes were known for their tenacity. Magus then said he had foreseen every eventuality, prompting Shade Thanos to say that he didn't understand why Magus had the shades fight. Magus insulted his sidekick Thanos and sent out the Reed Richards' shade to defeat the original and take his place.

Thanos tracked some mysterious energy readings and the Thanos doppelganger to a fortress in another dimension. There he encountered the Magus and was shocked to discover he had returned to existence. After a not-so-friendly tête-à-tête, Thanos was ready to battle the Magus and the doppelganger. However, the Magus revealed his army of doppelgangers and Thanos realized he was outmatched. The Magus used his technology to send Thanos back to his own dimension and erase all the information he had collected. Thanos went to get Warlock's help, which was exactly as the Magus planned.

When ShadeThanos said he couldn't find any fault with Magus' plan, which prompted him to wonder if it would ensnare Magus' "other self," a furious Magus grabbed him by the neck and stated Warlock was his shade, not vice-versa. ShadeThanos agreed. Magus asked about the Galactus Contingent. When they found they were ahead of schedule, Magus decided it would be better to find a way to slow them up. Magus and ShadeThanos watched as Thanos went to the Realm of Death with Warlock and the Infinity Watch to consult the Infinity Well in order to learn how the Magus had returned and what he was up to. When Magus feels they have learned enough, he informs Death indirectly that they are in her palace. Magus watches as his Reed Richards' shade detonates a gamma bomb while the heroes are all gathered within the Fantastic Four's head-quarters.

Thor used his hammer's mystical powers to contain the blast. Then, Magus and ShadeThanos teleported into the Fantastic Four's base and took back the shades of Iron Man and Richards. Magus watched as the heroes found a red herring; coordinates he left for them be-cause he wanted them to be there. Magus said that the gamma bomb was never meant to destroy the heroes, only to get them involved so that they can "muddy the waters"; the heroes were just pawns while Thanos and Warlock are the main pieces, Pip, Gamora, Galactus, and Eternity being useful secondary pieces. Magus planned to manipulate them all into getting what he wanted.

With Galactus still running too far ahead of schedule, the Magus blew up his ship in order to slow him down. Magus said that despite all his power, he aspired to greater heights. Magus saw Thanos, Warlock, and the Infinity Watch arrive at a second destination point on time. Magus said that Warlock couldn't imagine what it's like to have a past that never was. To be denied all his yesterdays and tomorrows. Magus said that once he gained ultimate power, Thanos and Warlock would pay the most. ShadeThanos asked about Thanos' warnings against divinity. Magus said Thanos subconsciously felt unworthy of the power and that he had no such fatal flaw. He had already been worshiped as a god. Magus watched as the Living Tribunal arrived before the catatonic Eternity. Magus dispatched the other shades to Earth to fight the heroes who remained behind, and watched as the pawn hero’s teleported right to where he wanted them: facing Thanos and the others. A misunderstanding results, as the Earth natives still distrust Thanos, with the concomitant battle ensuing. Magus said that nothing can stop him now.

Magus admired Thanos' ability to bring out the extremes in those around him. ShadeThanos thought that he, like his counterpart, craved ultimate power. Magus noticed Gamora experiencing a vision where a gauntleted hand reached for Warlock.

At some point, the Necromancer, the Doctor Strange of the High Evolutionary's Counter-Earth who had left that planet years before and thus escaped its destruction, went to the true Earth in search of the true Doctor Strange. He found and killed a double of Doctor Strange loyal to the Magus. However, the Necromancer decided to offer his services to the Magus via a telepathic signal, and the Magus accepted his service.

ShadeThanos told Magus a second time that he sensed something (Kang and Doom), but Magus said to forget it. Magus watched as Galactus came and teleported all the heroes aboard his ship. ShadeThanos warned Magus about underestimating Galactus' might. Magus said that Galactus was integral to his plan. Magus said he was about to lay claim to the Earth. Magus watched as Warlock reunited the Infinity Gauntlet. The Gauntlet didn't work because of the Living Tribunal's verdict earlier that they could not again be used in unison. Galactus went to appeal to the Living Tribunal to allow for the Gaunt-let working. The second Galactus was gone, Magus teleported in with ShadeThanos and grabbed Warlock, who was wearing the Infinity Gauntlet. Magus snatched the Gauntlet from Warlock and put it on. ShadeThanos pushed Warlock to the ground as Magus stood above him, now wearing the Infinity Gauntlet.

Warlock mocked Magus for wanting a powerless gauntlet, but Magus said the power would be restored soon. Magus sent ShadeThanos out to greet Thanos as he teleport-ed to Magus' base. Magus explained that Thanos was used to activate the secondary players; Galactus for his might and prestige; Earth's heroes to confuse everyone to the true goal; and Warlock to bring together the Gauntlet for him. Magus admired how even cosmic giants were his unknowing slaves. He told Warlock of the field that prevented Quasar from using the Ultimate Nullifier. As Magus watched the pending verdict on the Gauntlet, Kang and Doom decided to attack. Warlock decided to side with the devil he knew and fought with Magus against them. Kang shot Magus. Magus hit him and smashed his face into a screen. Magus got up and realized that the field that was blocking the Ultimate Nullifier was down. Kang shot Magus in the back. Now angered, Magus backhanded Kang. He hit Kang into the wall, and went to physically use the Cosmic Cubes to reinstate the shield. Doom defeated Warlock and Kang told Doom to go after Magus. Doom said he would, but since Kang was no longer of any use to him he blasted him. Magus was aghast to find that the Cosmic Cubes were missing, having been stolen by the Goddess, and unknown to the Magus. Doom blasted Magus from behind. Gamora resuscitated Eternity making it possible for Eternity to overturn the Living Tribunal's verdict. Magus struggled to his knees. Doom demanded the Gauntlet, but before Magus handed it over, Eternity allowed the gems to work together. Magus stood triumphant. He dissolved Quasar and held the Ultimate Nullifier in his hands.

Magus sat on his throne with Warlock on a cross as in Gamora's vision. In moments, Magus adjusted to godhood though the Reality Gem was a bit much to focus on. Magus said to Warlock, "Whoever fights monsters, Warlock, should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And when you look into the abyss, the abyss also looks into you. Nietzsche knew exactly what he was talking about."

Magus emerged from one chamber to address the two Thanos as they battled. Magus invited the winner to join him within the chamber, and then placed a spell on the door to remain locked until one Thanos was dead. Magus watched from within the room and admired Thanos as a unique being - despite the fact that there were currently two of them. Magus believed his Thanos' augmented power would ensure the real Thanos' death. Then Magus would deal with his disloyal thrall. Magus said that two of anything was too much. Magus decided that soon his existence and that of his shades would take the place of the others.

Magus stood victorious with the Infinity Gauntlet now functioning. As Invisible Woman freed the Magus' captives, including her husband, the Magus appeared as a giant face. Invisible Woman tried to attack it, but the Magus simply snapped his fingers and lined up all his opposition except Warlock, who remained on his cross, and Thanos, who emerged from his victory over ShadeThanos. Thanos stood in Magus' face, but Magus used his power to force Thanos to bow. Thanos told Magus that reality was not what Magus perceived. Magus' confidence was shaken and Thanos attacked. Magus started pummeling Thanos. Warlock grabbed the Infinity Gauntlet from behind and tried to wrest control of the gauntlet. The heroes were teleported onto Galactus' ship and taken home.

As Magus and Warlock struggled, Warlock broke off and power started to flow from his body. Warlock said that reality was shifting constantly. Warlock released a being half-Eternity, half-Infinity; Magus did not consider that a link existed be-tween Eternity and Infinity and was defeated. Thanos told everyone that Magus' Infinity Gauntlet contained a phony Reality Gem. He never gained true omnipotence. Warlock lied comatose.

Magus sat in Soul World. He said that next time he would hold on tighter to the universe. Magus decided he would raise a psychic army to usurp Warlock's control of the Soul Gem. Magus tried to recruit Judge Kraytor and Autolycus, but as they walked past right through him, he realized that in Soul World he was less than an entity because he was only a partial soul.

The Magus was visited in the Soul world by Adam Warlock, who needed information from the Magus to stop the Goddess, the embodiment of his good, feminine side. The defeated Goddess was later sent to the Soul world and came face to face with the Magus, who informed her that, as partial portions of a soul, they were only phantoms there. Goddess charged into Magus, but passed through him, making them realize they were ghosts even to themselves.

Adam Warlock had been keeping the Magus contained within the Soul Gem through a significant amount of effort. A being known as Syphonn briefly usurped the Soul Gem, and although Adam soon regained it, the damage was done, and the Magus was out.

However, the Magus had been reduced to a shadow of his former self, and that was what had slipped free from the Soul Gem. His time spent in the Gem and with Syphonn had taught him about power, energy, and souls. He learned the art of taking ephemeral energy and converting it to the physical. He went to Halva Center, where he began absorbing the very essence of lives he needed to regain his full power. He knew it would take quite some time... and many, many victims. Dozens, perhaps hundreds. Captain Marvel traveled to Halva Center on planet Calculex to spend time with old friends just as the city was experiencing a rash of disappearances. He became involved in the investigation when he learned one of the victims was his old lover, Steck'ee. Meanwhile, the Magus lurked beneath the streets with Steck as his hostage.

The Magus revealed to Marvel that he was behind the disappearances and that he held Steck prisoner. Marvel discovered that the Magus had killed hundreds more than the 11 victims known to the authorities. The Magus was using the energy from these people to restore himself to full physical life. However, the process was taking too long, so he planned to absorb the cosmically powered Captain Marvel to instantly restore himself to full vitality. Marvel attacked him to no avail.

Magus and Marvel were at a stalemate. The situation was further complicated when Rick Jones needed to switch places with Marvel to save his wife Marlo. However, the Magus swore that if Genis left, he would kill Steck. He eventually offered Marvel a compromise. If he would sacrifice himself to the Magus, the Magus would leave Steck and the rest of HalvaCenter alone and annihilate the Skrulls instead. Marvel pretended to go along, but when the Magus tried to absorb him, he found that Marvel's cosmic awareness linked his soul to the universe itself. This power was far too much for the Magus to absorb. Marvel transformed him into photonic energy and blasted him many light-years away from Halva Center. Unknown to Genis, however, the Magus landed on an unnamed planet, fully reborn, crackling with energy and laughing hysterically like a good villain.

The Magus appeared in the present to Marlo Jones, wife of Rick Jones, by appearing out of her mirror. He apparently opened a portal in her mirror and tried to abduct Marlo through it. Luckily, the mirror was shattered by Phyla, the sister of Captain Marvel. Magus again attacked at the apartment of Marlo Jones. This time however, he found and gravely wounded Moondragon, after entering the apartment through a telephone. Magus offered to heal Moondragon if she admitted she was afraid to die and wanted to be saved. She did so, and the Magus healed her with a kiss on her cheek, apparently mentally enslaving her in the process.

Magus appeared once more to antagonize Genis, this time with the aid of Genis' own son, pulled out of time from the future and corrupted. Genis only managed to defeat his son by willing himself to kill him while he was still an infant, and while this has not yet occurred in Genis' timeline, he apparently would truly follow through with it as the decision wiped his son's older self out of existence.

To prevent the expansion of the Fault and thus save his universe, Adam Warlock cast a spell to graft his unanchored timeline onto the only inert timestream with a stable, quiescent future he was aware of: Earth-7528; and while he was able to stop the Fault from spreading, Warlock was left in a weakened state, which prompted the Magus to take over his body.

Some of the Guardians of the Galaxy were sent back in time to stop this from happening by Kang the Conquerer, who warned that all possible futures were becoming futures dominated by the Magus before giving them a Cosmic Cube to assist in their mission. Star-Lord attempted to talk Adam into controlling his dark side, but failed. After a battle with the Magus and the apparent deaths of Mantis and Cosmo, Star-Lord was able to revert Adam temporarily with the Cube. But the Magus could not be stopped, forcing Star-Lord to end Adam's life at his own request.

But this was all a trick. Having used most of his power to stop the Fault from expanding, the Magus knew he could not defeat the Guardians as long as they possessed a Cosmic Cube. So, the Magus faked the deaths of the Guardians he killed and himself, sneaking away and reviving himself with the Church's belief fonts. Having the members he 'killed' captured, he had his men torture them until they follow only the Magus, revealing that he plans to unleash the dark rulers of the Fault and make the universe like the Cancerverse of the Fault.

Using the severed head of the Comtemplator, Magus located the Soul Gem on Ego the Living Planet and planned to track down the other Infinity Stones so he could use their combined power to reshape the universe in his image; however, his quest was cut short by Ultron / Hank Pym, who ambushed and killed him in order to take the Soul Gem.

HISTORY
Paul Kirk operated as the "mystery man" known as Manhunter during World War II as a member of the All-Star Squadron, fighting alongside his friend Tex Thompson (Americommando). In the later years of the war, Kirk and Thompson went secretly behind enemy lines in their civilian identities to take down the various Nazi super-agents which included Parsifal, whose power-negating abilities prevented other superheroes from entering Nazi-occupied territories. One night, as Paul Kirk attempted to infiltrate a Bavarian castle held by Nazi scientists, he saw that the Ultra-Humanite had his brain trans-planted from the body of actress Dolores Winters into that of Thompson, who upon awakening tried to kill Kirk when seeing him through a window. Kirk barely escaped death, though it left him with amnesia as he made his way back to America on a fishing ship, running from gunmen and being haunted by disturbing dreams. Kirk came into contact with Thompson's former ally Bob Daley (Fatman) and remained in hiding with him until they arrived in New York, where Carter Hall (Hawkman) used hypnosis to unlock the secrets behind the dreams, revealing that they were caused by his discovery of the Ultra-Humanite taking on Thompson's body.

In 1950, at a rally in Washington, D.C. where all costumed superheroes were to appear by Presidential decree to show their loyalty, Daley helped Kirk put a stop to the Ultra-Humanite once and for all after Joan Dale's (Miss America) and Rex Tyler's (Hourman) public expo-sure of both Thompson and Dyna-man, sacrificing his own life in the process. Kirk dove straight at the Ultra-Humanite and pushed him through a window, where he died.

A year after this incident, Kirk returned to his love of hunting in Kenya where he disappeared from sight.

After a collision with a bull left him mortally wounded, he was picked up by the Council. They treated his wounds and enhanced him genetically, and made him the commander of their enforcement division. This unit consisted solely of clones of him. He remained loyal until he had to assassinate Interpol agent Damon Nostrand. Together with Batman, martial arts master Asano Nitobe, Interpol agent Christine St. Clair and weapon smith Kolu Mbeya raided the Council's headquarters. They faced off against Council member Anatol Mykros, who blasted Kirk with enough radiation to kill him. The wounded Kirk used Mykros' psionic helmet to destroy the base, though Kirk died in the blast himself.

CONTACTS: Manhunters (Oan Robots)

HISTORY
As a young man, Mark was a public defender, unhappy about how easily criminals manipulated the system and got off without punishment. Shaw's uncle Desmond Shaw introduced him to an ancient sect of crime fighters called the Manhunters. Shaw contacted the Grand Master, the sect's leader, through a magical lion medallion. Shortly, he assumed the Manhunter name and costume from a previous Manhunter.

Mark Shaw later reappeared and the Manhunter sect and was shown to be comprised of androids, created billions of years before by the Guardians of Oa to police the galaxy. For millennia, they served the Guardians well. However, the Man-hunters became obsessed with the act of 'hunting' criminals. Their code, "No Man Escapes the Man-hunters", became more important to them than seeing justice done. Eventually, the androids rebelled against the Guardians, but were swiftly defeated by their creators. Those that survived went into hiding.

The latter-day Manhunters attempted to disgrace the Guardians with Mark Shaw at their side. They were opposed by the JLA, especially by League member Green Lantern. Shaw realized that he had been duped by the Manhunters and turned on them, killing the Grand Master, who was revealed to be a robot. Mark Shaw quickly returned as a new hero called the Privateer, but it was soon revealed that he was also working as a villain called the Star-Tsar, in league with the Key. The Red Tornado discovered this deception and Shaw went to prison on federal extortion charges.

When the Millennium event occurred Mark was still serving his sentence. Due to his familiarity with the Manhunter cult, Shaw was offered the chance to accompany the Suicide Squad on a mission as the Privateer, and was released when the mission was completed. Mark donned a new costume to distance himself from the Manhunter cult, moved home to New York City (specifically Manhattan) and began hunting costumed criminals for the bounty. He chose to use the name Manhunter as a way of redeeming his earlier actions. Although he consistently insisted he was a businessman, he often acted as a hero. Among the notable villains he captured are: Captain Cold, Catman, Count Vertigo, Mirage, Outlaw II, Penguin, and Sportsmaster II. He also got involved in numerous other adventures such as protecting Anna-Marie Vere and the subsequent take down of her team known as Argent, "body-guarding" Wally West and disrupting a Durlan infiltration plot during an Alien Invasion!, destroying/retrieving an alien robot for reverse engineering, among others.

During this time, he and his family were threatened by two shape-shifters named Dumas. The first, Stephen Forrest Lee, was born with shape-shifting powers. He was recruited by the Manhunter Cult but turned to assassination and formed his own organization. In the 1930's he created the identity of Olivia Vancroft as a way of creating a love interest. Both Olivia and Dumas had obsessions with masks and when Manhunter first appeared, Olivia vowed to get it by "contracting" Dumas. Shaw killed the first Dumas, but his body was soon recovered by ex-CIA agents looking to duplicate his powers. They succeeded in creating a serum but when Dumas' organization tracked them down, one of the got injected with the serum and became the second Dumas. Shaw's battle with this Dumas led him to discover the Manhunter's true origins and ultimately give up the Manhunter identity.

At some point Sarge Steel recruited Mark Shaw to act to act as a double-agent among various terrorist networks. For this, Shaw took on the identity of his fallen foe Dumas, and asserted control of the shapeshifter's operations. It was later revealed that this was but one of many episodes of manipulation at the hands of the US Government, as most of Shaw's memories and personal history were actually the result of mental programming.

Years later, Mark Shaw seemingly joined the Shadow Fighters in order to battle the supervillain Eclipso. While many assumed that Shaw was killed opposing Eclipso along-side many other members of the Shadow Fighters, this was eventually revealed not to be the case.

In fact, when the call went out for heroes to fight Eclipso, Sarge Steel believed, for whatever reason, that it would raise too many questions if Mark Shaw did not answer the call. Steel sent along an impostor in Shaw's place. This impostor thus, apparently, appeared only once and is not known to have done anything but attack Eclipso and die.

During the period leading up to the Infinite Crisis, it was revealed that Shaw's time as Dumas and the mental manipulation of the US Government had adversely effected his psyche. He developed a split personality, believing himself to truly be Dumas. This Dumas personality asserted control over Shaw attempting to kill anyone who had ever used the Manhunter title. He succeeded in killing Dan Richards, Chase Lawler, and Kirk DePaul before targeting the newest Man-hunter, Kate Spencer, and even himself. Following a battle with Kate and an OMAC, Shaw was purged of the Dumas identity by Dylan Battles who removed the Dumas programming from Shaw's psyche. Dylan and Mark soon became roommates. Not long after, Mark Shaw was approached to take up the mantle of Azrael by the Order of St. Dumas, but he turned them down.
